Has Hillary (OR BILL) Been Vetted Enough??

(bumped up by NoQuarter) Well, you all know where I stand on the Hillary as Secretary of State thing. I think she would be brilliant, probably the best SoS in the history of Secretaries of States. Presumably, though, those Secretaries of State could trust (more or less) the president whom they served. Clinton? Not so much. Obama will turn on her like a rabid dog should she outshine him for even a moment, much less do a good job as SoS. And then she would be out of a job as the Good Senator from New York. Oh, you know it could happen.
But there are others who disagree with me, which is peachy keen-o by me. That’s the beauty of a democracy (such as it is at this stage). I was asked highlight the excellent comments for WHY Clinton should accept the position if offered to her, which I have done here. The comments came from one of my great readers, who also has an awesome blog of her own, BlueLyon. My comments are interspersed as well. BlueLyon had this to say (and I reprint this with her permission):

Well, BlueLyon has a point there. I know exactly what that feels like – waiting for the crumbs that drop from the table. As a woman, as a lesbian, as a woman in ministry. One of the main reasons I left the Episcopal Church while in seminary (besides my changing theology) was the church’s reaffirmation that GLB people were allowed to come to the church, but not be ordained in it. I would have had to lie to get ordained, and that was just wrong on so many levels, it was not a real choice. Anyway, that felt a whole lot like being grateful for the crumbs that were dropped from the table. So, I totally get that.
I asked my buddy if she had seen American Girl in Italy’s excellent post, “So, Does She Have Foreign Policy Experience, or Not?“. She had, and if you haven’t, I recommend it. Naturally, she had. And she said:

Yes, I’m leery of the way Obama operates. And really, this whole conversation we are all having is just tea leaf reading…
She does have a point. I like the idea of the exploding heads as a result of the cognitive dissonance after the way Obama treated Clinton, and gave tacit approval to his minions to act likewise. Then here he is, after labeling her a racist, inexperienced (compared to HIS foreign policy experience of living in Indonesia from ages 6 – 10, and traveling in Pakistan for 3 whole weeks!), or belittling her accomplishments (Annie Oakley anyone?), etc., etc., to considering her for a major position in his Administration. Wowie zowie – can’t wait to see the machinations they go through to justify THAT one!! So, there is some poetic justice there, I have to admit.
I have to say, this whole “vetting” thing is really getting to me. Now the media is saying if she doesn’t get it, it is all Bill’s fault for his international work post-presidency:
As always, Greta was the most balanced in her coverage of this issue. Generally, from what I have seen, it just looks like another opportunity for people to pile onto the Clintons, to ream them anew. Like the video in LisaB’s excellent article, “The Media Tells Stories THEY Want To Tell People They Don’t Respect,” which has these two HORRIBLE women on “Hardball,” Jennifer Donohue and Michelle Bernard who are just insane in their descriptions of Clinton, and their adoration fr Obama. When CHRIS MATTHEWS comes off as looking neutral, you KNOW you are in trouble.
If only they had ever, ever cared about vetting Obama as much as they do the husband of a potential cabinet member.
All of that is to say, yes, at this point, it is tea leaf reading, though the time is ever-drawing near. I still cannot bear the concept of Hillary Clinton carrying this guy’s water, but she will do what she thinks is right. Right for her, and right for the country, because unlike Obama, for Senator Clinton, those two are one in the same…

If and when an Obama foreign policy move blows up, Hillary will take the blame as Obama is protected by the MSM.
Her senate seat would be gone, along with any chance of her 2012 candidacy.
There is no 2012 for Hillary. The same reason she didn’t vet Obama out is the same reason you don’t run against your own party’s incumbant.

I love all the reasons for Hillary to be SOS, from nothing left for Kerry and Richardson, to the Obamabots heads exploding to her having a great platform to do good (women around the world, especially in war zones, need Hillary desperately). I do fear her getting blamed for anything Obama can’t do and again the idea that Bill will be blamed if she is not picked, is more Clinton hate. Biden’s probably not too pleased either considering he probably thought he could run foreign policy out of the VPs office.

I heard someone today – I think it was Eagleburger (I was busy so didn’t watch) say that he liked the idea of Hillary because Obama doesn’t know diddly about foreign affairs so he needs her expertise. It was pretty funny!

Obama apparently told his staff. Make it happen. Bill’s vetting will be done. The choice is in Hillary’s hands, from all reports.

And for those of you who think this is a maneuver? I don’t agree.
He knows what everyone in Washington DC knows and what I always knew. Hillary Rodham Clinton is the best and the brightest this nation has to offer. He would be a fool not to tap that talent.

Correct. And it is silly to imagine in any way that Obama will want HRC to fail, or will want to “blame her” if anything goes wrong on the international front. In fact, if there is any tacit quid pro quo going on here other sheer up-front, “you’re the best person for the job, Senator Clinton, and I want the best person for every job,” I have a vague suspicion that it might have to do with HRC replacing Biden on the ticket in 2012, which of course would set her up to run in 2016. Biden will be 70 in 2012, and the Democratic Party will have an interest in setting up a very strong frontrunner to win the presidency in 2016. Perhaps Vice President Biden might want to win finish his career on the Supreme Court?
This move to offer the State Department to HRC is a great, great move by Obama. Great for his presidency, great for her career, great for the country and for the world.

AnninCA, I have to agree with you. Obie may be a lot of things but he is not a fool. He is very cunning and knows he needs someone like Hillary in that role.
As for all of washington knowing she is the best, I agree with that also. If this wasn’t true the reaction to her would be much different.
Hillary in my opinion has outgrown the senate. She know who and what Obie is. But I think that SOS looks better to her than being slapped down constantly in the Senate.
Anyone with half a brain outgrows the Senate quickly.

Whether HRC would be a good or even great Secretary of State depends on how much power she can wrest from Obama, his Chief of Staff and National Security Adviser. Obama could be like a Carter and marginalize his whole cabinet, relegating them to a supporting cast role oft out of the news and decision making loop. If she could force her own agenda at State, she would be a good Secretary, but to be a great Secretary of State she would need to approach the stature of the truly great ones, Seward, Acheson and Kissinger, which I find unlikely.
It is the JOB of the SoS to communicate the facts/relevant information to the president.
If she isn’t influential, then she’s a total flop.
Obama will make sure that Hillory will subordinate to him by several ranks. Like Hitler, he will micro-manage everything because he believes that he is far superior to everyone. His cabinet will have little time to accomplish anything because most of their time will be spent kissing his ass. To date he has not shown me any indication that he will behave otherwise.
First of all, does everyone have ADHD or short term memory loss? This was BO’s MO when the media went crazy asking whether he was going to choose her for VP. BO loves this stuff, it puffs up his cirrhotic ego even more. This is not about HRC’s expertise or her absolute fitness for the job, it is all about him. Emmanuel and Axelrod and BO do nothing unless it plays well in public. That said I keep seeing Madeline Albright standing next to others in Clinton’s cabinet after the Lewinsky scandal came to light. Now think about when all the scandals hit about BO and HRC has to stand up there as part of the cabinet. Don’t do it Hillary, you’re much too good for this, serve the people of New York and don’t sell your soul in some Faustian deal–keep your distance from the One and you will be so much better off.

A report from Yahoo news 1 hour ago stated that HRC might not accept the SOS position “IF” offered to her by BO. Nothing has been definitively offered or declined, not now with the SOS or with the VP slot after the primaries Annin. How can anyone at this point trust the media or their appointed one?

I have written my skatey-eighth letter to Hill asking her not to do this or that, but she always has done it anyway. She will do this too, and it’s not in her best interest. I read a comment on another blog this morning rejoicing in the idea of Hillary as SoS because then NY could have Caroline Kennedy as Senator to take Hillary’s place.
As I don’t trust Bambi at all, I’m sure his idea is to dump Hillary in a while and leave her outside the political arena. I’d be happy to be proved wrong about that sometime in the future.
However, I had not considered the idea of payback for Caroline Kennedy’s support. I didn’t think she had any interest in elected office. What do you think?

I think it is purely hypocritical for Barry to have attacked Hillary’s foreign policy credentials as he was stealing the nomination and now suddenly recognizes that she is better qualified for the SoS position than he or his own VP is. However, hypocritical is what Barry does best.
If Hillary wants to keep HER enemies closer, then she should allow herself to be courted, and then accept the position. She will finally be able to transcend Presidential politics, and will be one of the greatest SoS this country has ever had. Her next step is hopefully, right now.

The big question about HRC as SOS is this: why? Specifically, why would Obama do this? The benefit for the country? Why would Obama start caring about that now? During the primary he ran on the proposition that Clinton was the political equivalent of Typhoid Mary. Having Clinton around to take the fall for Obama’s blunders is the best explanation that I’ve heard, but it is all speculation.
I can think of one benefit from HRC as SOS. Isn’t the SOS next in succession behind the VP? If Obama is DQed that makes Clinton the VP.

Well, I think anyone elected to be president wants what is best for this country.
Now, I often disagree with their path to that.
But I do not doubt their motives.

Doesn’t work that way. Everyone doesn’t “bump up” a notch if the seat above goes vacant. When Agnew resigned, Ford was nominated by Nixon to replace Agnew as VP and approved by a majority vote of the House and Senate. Then Nixon resigned and Ford became President, with nary a vote cast for him.
The only way the fifth in line would be eligible to be President is if the first four resigned or died all at the same time.
Your first paragraph says it for me (and hubby) and to add one more thing. I’m not too thrilled with making Obama’s administration being saved by HER.
Like others, I think his intent is to make sure she takes a fall. However, the One cannot see beyond his own mirror, and therefore tends underestimate everyone else. He made that mistake during the primary and will make the same mistake again.
Hillary will outhsine them all, and in the process, could very well refine the role of the SoS not only in the Cabinet, but in the world. I am looking forward to it.
I trust that Hillary will carefully weigh all of her options and their consequences before she makes the decision about the SOS position and if she chooses to take the job, I’m sure she will be sterling in it.

Hillary Clinton is the ONLY threat to BHO within the Democratic Party. Anybody who thinks this fellow is NOT cunning and is NOT maneuvering (to neutralize the most visible D threat to him for the next 8 years) has been asleep in a cave for the last few months. Machiavelli (a/k/a Alinsky) does not become Solomon overnight (to mix up some metaphors and genres).
If you will focus for a moment, not on the job of governing, for which BHO has shown no aptitude and little interest but, rather, on the job of getting elected and solidifying power/position, then this makes perfect political sense.
To suggest that the name Hillary Clinton popped into his head because he was casting about for the best possible person to fill the job is just fantasy.
All in all, a very smart move, for BHO.
Everything he does is for BHO. Best we not forget that lens through which to view his actions. Brings a lot of things into stark focus.
Right now, his own party is split. She is the head (figuratively and literally) of the loyal opposition, standing in the wings, ready to be drafted to the rescue should he stumble. Not if she’s a member of his cabinet.
Looked at that way, we can see that her flip flop on his qualifications for the job and the fawning campaign horse manure she was spreading was an audition, to prove she can behave and bow with the rest of the pilgrims.
Looks like she passed.

This vetting thing is the most ridiculous thing ever. The Clintons have been under the most intense scrutiny since the 1990’s for Whitewater, Kenneth Star investigations, Monica Lewinsky/impeachment hearings, Hillary’s presidential bid this year and now more questions? What an absolute joke! And Obama has yet to tell us if he is actually a U.S. natural born citizen. This is beyond disgusting and unfair and stupid and biased. Let’s VET Obama and find out if he is eligible to president under the U.S. Constitution, if he has lied to the American people about ties to foreign governments and his involvement in same (Kenya, Indonesia for starters), and get all those questions get answered honestly. I won’t be holding my breath however; even Houdini couldn’t hold his breath that long.

I think it is pretty obvious why Obama is appointing all of Clinton’s people – he thinks he can replicate Bill’s successes that way. But we are in a different world now, one that Obama is not capable of leading us through. Your right – it is like being on the Titanic or something. It’s scary to see this group of sleazy cons (Alexrod-Obama crew) in charge of our collective fates.
I think my own sense of Obama is being validated now. We’ll see.

This person wants lots of attention. s/he it threw temper tantrums, called people names — and then stomped off weeks ago. Then s/he it shows up again. Fragile males need lots of enablers and people to explain what they say. O is a fragile male — big ears are a marker of this trait. A whole rant without any paragraph breaks is also difficult to read.

Whoever leaked the story about Hillary being under consideration for SoS — has accomplished their goal — diverted attention away from the ECONOMIC chaos. Clinton as SoS would be used by camp 0 to divert attention away from HIS gross incompetence.
Right now I’d rather be on a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean — worried about the weather and the direction of the wind. People are stupid — they can get suckered over and over again. Same guy different mask, and the fools come out to vote.
I don’t give a shit what any of them do anymore! One thing this election has taught me, is that there is not one politician out there that truly puts this country before their own interests.
It doesn’t feel good to not trust any of them but that’s reality. If any of you were investigating Obama then you ran into the same information I did about the rest of the candidates.
I have a whole new way of looking at the politicians now. They can’t raise the kind of money they need to get elected, unless they make deals and do things the rest of us find reprehensible. I should have known all along but I guess I was a little idealistic.
Some one said awhile back that they vote for the person they believe will do the least harm to our country. At the time, I thought that was very cynical. However, I find myself thinking the same way now.
Sometimes ignorance is bliss and I think I liked it better when I thought my candidate was as patriotic as the rest of us.
Maybe the question needs to be asked; Would we change too if we ran for public office? Probably, because if we were straight forward and honest we couldn’t get elected.

Well Ann, I wasn’t that naive but I did believe some of them were honest to a degree and put their country ahead of their own ambitions. Sadly, I found out their career and ambition came first.

Since Obama has so very few years in politics at a national level and he chose to spend most of that time running for the presidency, he has not collected the number of colleagues and associates that another candidate with more experience in years would naturally have. He has no choice but to rely on the former Clinton administration for talent even though he thought them of no talent,etc when they served Clinton. I don’t know how to think about Hillary and the SOS. If Obama fired her at some point and if he is a failing president, she could run against him in2012. Those are big ifs, but Kennedy did. But in the meantime she could serve our country well in the world.

I think the Hillary talk is a distraction used to keep our eyes and ears away from the lower level appointment meetings they are having. We are not hearing about the talks with thousands of very important agency heads that are being offered jobs, right now, while we are being MSM’d about this subject.

Obama is considering Hillary and McCain for posts because he doesn’t want people not to like him and because he really doesn’t have the experience to be president. If he knows that, and he’s willing to appoint good people, I’ll feel more comfortable. I’d love to see both of them in this administration. We need their knowledge. I’d rather Hillary was president, but I can’t stand having a Democratic administration the Clintons aren’t involved in.

Agencies that are under jurisdiction of Secretary level posts do not have their heads selected by the secretaries. They are all direct appointments from the White House.
Finance, Treasury, Agriculture, Commerce, Education. All these agencies are littered with loyalists, appointed by the president, running the executive agendas of the president within those agencies.
The new surface mining rules released today came not from the EPA, but the head of the Office of Surface Mining. Secretaries have quit in the past when they learned that their direction was being subverted with direct orders from the White House. Christine Todd Whitman is an example.
We are being distracted.
I think I will work up a post on this. If I don’t, somebody should.
If the pretender has a failure in the Presidency, and only the future will tell, there may be an opportunity for a new administration by 2012…and it is unlikely to be a Democratic one.
Voters are very fickle now, and the economy had better take off soon or BO will be swamped.
Unfortunately, Senator Clinton has been damaged already, and added to previous nay-sayers, she is unlikely to regain much of that support.

Excellent points. Does anyone else find it odd/strange/intersteing/downright frigging scary that NO ONE can figure out Obama. Seriously, it’s like he has no history in which to judge him by. And what little there is, like his time in Chicago, it is frightening in my opinion. But, we can’t even figure out if this would be a good move, if it is a genuine offer, what the hell is going on, because we have no idea who he is.
And Obama supporters don’t even know what the hell he is doing. They hate the idea, Obama ripped on her FP experience, and kept scremaning for change, but now we have a WH staff composed of all CLinton people.
