November 17, 1558 - A Great Woman took the throne
By NewHampster on November 18, 2008 at 9:00 AM in Women
On this date, November 17, 1558, Elizabeth succeeded to the throne of England at the age of 25. This incredible woman took England from just one of many European countries to the great seapower that ruled the waves for nearly 400 years.
My most vivid memory of my one trip to the UK, actually there are too many memories to call this the best. But I remember saying to my wife as we stood in Westminster that I couldn’t believe I was standing next to Elizabeth. We were surrounded by all those tombs and the only one I truly cared about was the greatest woman to ever rule the world.
With increasing English domination at sea, Elizabeth encouraged voyages of discovery, such as Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the world and Sir Walter Raleigh’s expeditions to the North American coast.
The long reign of Elizabeth, who became known as the “Virgin Queen” for her reluctance to endanger her authority through marriage, coincided with the flowering of the English Renaissance, associated with such renowned authors as William Shakespeare. By her death in 1603, England had become a major world power in every respect, and Queen Elizabeth I passed into history as one of England’s greatest monarchs.
Let’s applaud the memory of a great woman, perhaps the greatest monarch of modern times.
At Partizane, any story about a great woman is always the top post.

Yes, but was the head-lopping really necessary?
I wouldn’t mind bringing back some head-lopping for some Obots I know.

Yes, but was the head-lopping really necessary?
—————————————————-
Right, tillthen!!!
Everybody seems to forget HOW she got to be queen:
Does MARY STUART ring a bell?
Sad when history is ignored.
BTW, has anything changed, politically, since the
days when they “lopped off heads” to win?
We’ve just become a little more civilized in
assassinating our competitors, that’s all….
That was not how she became queen. For years Elizabeth did everything she could to avoid putting Mary Queen of Scots to death but Mary kept plotting against her. (Beheading was considered a humane way to impose the death penalty.) Mary wanted the throne but I have never seen any evidence that she would have gotten it even if she had lived. She was Scottish and allied to France, Englands enemy.
Elizabeth was a very moderate, tolerant leader by the standards of her time. England had been torn apart for years by civil war (more like tribal infighting) until her grandfather Henry VII took over. He constantly had to fight off phony pretenders to the throne but he managed to bring stability to that country. So it is not surprising that his son Henry VIII and granddaughter Elizabeth would take strong measures to prevent uprisings. That was also why Henry was so desperate for a male heir. There was no way he could have foreseen that his daughter would be able to hold the country together.
She really was an amazing ruler.
Thanks for this post. Elizabeth was indeed an amazing woman. Maybe someday America will allow an amazing woman to serve in the highest office. I can think of a couple, can’t you? –2012!
No. america wants symbols only. The only woman they will offer up will be a token female just like the token black. she will have little or no accomplishments to her name, but she will most likely be pretty. the media won’t give her any coverage otherwise. nope, no american celebrity President’s for this anarchist anymore. they can keep their tokens.
You may want to skip this comment if you are not already depressed as I am. It might make you depressed.
I’m with you on the no token thing. And someone once called me an anarchist. I had to look up what an anarchist was, but did not feel I fit the main definition. I do not wish anarchy or are actively pursuing it. I only call things as I see them and we are FUBAR on the present path we are on. Maybe you are one of the more rare subspecies of anarchists like apparently I am, who portend pessimistically based on facts? I hate tokens and LABELS anyway, so screw that I guess.
Yeah we have a “black” president now! Whoopee! Never mind he still has his training wheels on his bike and ran over Hillary and turned my vote into dog shit to get there by stealing the nomination. No biggie to subvert the USC all in the name of a symbolic idol.
Sorry to intrude, everyone can go back to being optimistic now, if that is at all possible. I’m hoping this feeling of dread that I’ve had since Bush was elected in 2000 and now continues with the Opampers “election” wears off maybe in the next decade?
Seriously, I am in a major funk as I am sure many of you are. My heart goes out to every single one of you who suffers at the hands of our woefully misguided, egotistical, evil and greedy dummkopf “leaders” and their propaganda ministers in the media. I would call for them to all to rot in Hell if they had not already created it here on Earth for the rest of us.
Galt, Your Royal Funkiness:
Here’s some levity, perhaps………Could you expand the Pizza Parlor and offer milkshakes and Ice SCREAM as well? You could call it “The DQ (Dairy Quarter) at the NO Q”. It would be an udder delight!
What say ye, Mr. Funk-sans-Wagnall. ?????
I have good days and bad days. I am sure it’s apparent from my comments today that this is a bad one.
I saw the Brafy commemorative coin commercial this morning. I wanted to laugh as though it was a SNL skit. It sure sounded like one. Sadly, it was real, well, in the same phoney way Odrama is real.
I have to change that commercial. It sounds like the narrator is saying Brock Obama, or Rock Obama.
And to put him on a Kennedy half dollar.
Let me go puke now….
NewHampster,
I can no longer get past you, as a male, promoting porn and strippers, for your pleasure and ‘horniness’, your declaring that the degradation of females is necessary so as to propagate the human species, saying that women are needed as whores and as objects in porn so that the human species may survive.
I can not get past any of those things you believe and swallow your load of “Partizane honors women’.
I do not know what you are trying to pull here, but I think readers need to look a little deeper into NewHampster and what the man really thinks about women.
Huh? Where the heck did this all come from?
At a guess you’re in the wrong blog Evelyn Joyce or you have a weird imagination?

“I fully admit to a like of the porn and I do love the stripper ladies of Las Vegas.”
NewHampster should just come clean. He seems man enough to admit that the degradation of females is okay.
I guess it is no surprise that when a woman calls a man out for his misogyny, for his wearing of masks, she will face being questioned first and the coals will be readied for her feet. How dare I call out this guy that is loved and taken, full throated, (as they say in politics).
The personal is political.
What’s wrong with porn? I like porn. There are some very good female porn directors out there and I’m sure if you ask those women if they feel degraded, they’ll tell you from their Beverly Hill estates that the only thing being exploited are the wallets of those buying it. I’m a happily married female by the way.
You sound like my old friend Venecian at dKos.
Would you rather I lie? Better I play the politic game like Spitzer and preach against what I do in the shadows.
I do not say what I like and do is right. It is just fact. It is also a fact that unlike you, I do not claim to be perfect. My site is honest. I am trying to become a feminist and I realize I have far to go but to turn it back at you, I would really like to experience the trip without someone like you putting coals to my feet.
Try living in the real world, maybe try reading the post you referenced http://www.partizane.org/node/447
Yeah, only men like porn, and the women are forced into it.
Sure.
What is wrong with a man wanting to look at a woman sexually anyway? Isn’t that how you were born? And what is wrong with a woman wanting a man to look at her sexually? Not a damn thing.
I’m not trying to rake you over the coals, but I’m beginning to feel like all the people claiming misogyny for every little thing is becomming like the race card. I didn’t like being called a racist, and just because someone may enjoy sex…doesn’t mean they are sexist!
Well, porn is porn. You can not say that you are into ‘just a little porn’, ‘just a little degradation of females’ just as you can not say that you are ‘just a little pregnant’.
Porn is (warning graphic – stop reading here as this reality, a graphic truth, will be upsetting).
Porn is a female, mostly a teen girl, a child laid down, strapped down as a paying male waits.
A nail is driven though her skull. A nail is driven through this girl child’s brain.
The nail driven through her brain causes her body to react. This is what the male, who paid for this first hand experiences is waiting for. He has been told that when a body dies in a manner such as this that the body goes through a slow and wild movement. This is what he wants. He wants this sexually and it is filmed so that those who want porn may enjoy it later. Her death, while this male mounts, ‘has sex’ with her, is filmed. That is porn. This -is-what-porn-really-is.
As her body bucks in death, with a nail through her brain, he ‘gets his’ all of this is filmed and sold as porn. Sold as porn. Sold for entertainment.
This does not happen just once by accident. This is porn. This is the true face of porn.
This is what happens in the making of porn. So, no person who buys or otherwise accepts porn as a common commodity, as common as buying a pack of gum, can ever think that there are not real and true harms to real people in the making of porn.
No purveyor of porn, regardless of how they may explain their purchase as being benign, will ever be able to erase the true fact of porn and that porn is a death of females.
A person may think porn is ‘okay’ does not get to remove themselves from the group of persons that consider females as second class objects. A person who is into porn is not allowed to separate themselves from the human being, the nail and the hammer. You are one. You drive the nail with your purchase of porn.
Porn says that you are okay with the murder of females for the sexual entertainment of others.
A person can not be ‘a little pregnant’ and you can not do ‘a little porn’ without being a member of a club that condones the murder of females for sexual gratification. In for a penny, in for a pound.
You can not remove your desire to view girls and women in humiliating situations from what drives you at the core. Your core is what says what you really are.
Everything else is just fluff and driven by motives. I have had enough of late, of motives and masks and people with agendas who sell goods to the unsuspecting.
Evelyn, you are crazy. Painting everything as your own personal extremist hell does not assist the feminist cause.
Funny that. A woman who describes the reality of porn being called an extremist.
Well, I am not concerned with being called names. Hello water, meet ducks back.
I would ask you though to outline for me what version of feminism accepts the degradation of females.
I would like to know what version of feminism you talk about and how I do not do women justice.
Please go on with your definitions of feminism and please make sure to point by point, outline how I vary. Outline how I vary.
And, as a side note, I am not interested in women rushing to NewHampster’s defense, as if the guy can not respond on his own.
I am interested in people that want to talk about women as we relate to the men who move among us. I am interested in talking about a bunch of things. Yet, meh, some dood who flips a masks to gain attention, a ‘look at me, I am all for you, but wait, in my core, you are crap’, kinda dood, well, I guess that will flush itself out as people read on.
It is not about the dood, as you seem to make it to be, as much as the guy who wears the mask, the illusions that women are being asked to see through.
That’s just crazy. That is NOT porn. Not in any reality. That is violence and murder. I have NEVER IN MY LIFE heard of “porn” being described this way. That is sickening. And I’m sure New Hamspter did not mean he liked YOUR kind of porn.
And you know what? There is also lesbian porn. What now??? Do you not like women looking at women either?
I am thoroughly disturbed by your definition, and labeling EVERYONE who thinks it’s even just ok.
Just because you think it’s degrading to women, doesn’t mean all women think that. People are different from you. If it is degrading in your eyes, maybe because sex is too??? If a woman feels good about what she does, how is she being degraded? Because you don’t like it?
There is a lot of PORN out there that is degrading to men too.
I’m a woman. I feel strongly about women’s rights. However, I think we all need to be HUMAN first. Men are rude crude and nasty. So are women.
If you are so stronly a feminist, then you must be for abortion. How do you feel about women aborting a baby who is a girl? I’m very curious about this.
OH, Now you’ll gonna make me watch “Elizabeth” the movie for the 100th plus times, lol.
“My most vivid memory of my one trip to the UK, actually there are too many memories to call this the best. But I remember saying to my wife as we stood in Westminster that I couldn’t believe I was standing next to Elizabeth. We were surrounded by all those tombs.”
I was there in the mid 80’s and I stood there in awe. It is a very special place.
I loved England all together and hope to go back one day, when I have money again(ha ha).
Elizabeth has always been one of my favorite persons in history. A great woman.
I appreciate this post. I think it is important that we not only expose the misogyny but also re-educate about the amazing acomplishments of women.
Clearly the younger generation of woman have completely lost their way and it became all apparent in the Obot craze.
It is because the womens movement has lost its way and shifted from a “freedom to” into a “freedom from” mentality. When I was a girl, it was all about freedom to do, to strive, to be whatever I wanted. I was free to be a fireman, a policeman, an astronaut, an athelete, or a scholar. Free to have sex, or not. Free to marry, or not. Free to be a mom or not. Free to have a career and be a mother, or choose one or the other.
Now the singular focus is freedom from an unwanted preganancy. How empowering is that? It is not. It is a limiting message. No wonder the younger generation of women are so lost they actually thought it was acceptable to call a Governor, a VP canidate, a working mom, a fully equal partner in a marriage…a C@nt?????????
I think my generation somewhat succeeded so that our daughters assume the same rights their mother’s fought for. where the movement went wrong, IMHO, was to stop fighting, to be winners rather than never-wons.
Why for instance are we not now pushing for the final 3 states to ratify the ERA?
NewHampster,
I think you may want to reply to the women who responded a few posts above this. The response would be regarding your pro porn, pro degradation of women.
My opinion is that it would be great if you talked about how women are sexually degraded for your pleasure yet admired for being female. Possibly you could have a think tank convo about this phenomenon
I wasn’t replying to him, I was replying to you.
Sex is not always degrading. People actually enjoy it.
Sarah’s Book Deal: A Cool $7 Million
http://patriotroom.com/sarahs-book-deal-a-cool-7-million/
I am thrilled Sarah has something out of her experience running as VP she deserves every penny along with her family who were trashed my the media and supporters of the man to be…
“by the media”
GOOD FOR HER!!
W00T!!!
excellent!!!!
That was wonderful. Thank you for that post. Very inspiring.
Thank you for this post and for reminding us that in some countries and in other times, women could exercise leadership, power and authority.
Speaking of women, is Hill going to be SOS or not…all I see is the guardian uk report?
Great post. Thank you! It’s good to be reminded often that other countries have trusted women as their leaders, and there have been some great ones!
Thanks for the post.
Another amazing woman was the FIRST feminist writer!! Born Christine de Pizan in 1363, Venice Italy. One of her greatest literary works was “The Book of the City of Ladies”. She wrote it in 1405 (using her real name). I have a used copy I found on Amazon.
Check out Christine de Pizan on wiki.
I happen to be reading “The Life of Elizabeth I” by Allison Weir at the moment so this is a very apt post. Elizabeth I was truly a remarkable woman.
ahh what a great topic. As a history major whose fave period was Tudor-Stuart England, I can not help but hold Elizabeth in the top 10 women of all time
however, I think Catherine the Great was an incredibly enlightened monarch
Eleanor of Acquitaine IMHO surpasses them ALL and if she had been able to rule well it would have been AWESOME!! but Henry locked her in a tower instead to keep her out of the way
you know the way they do, PUMAS are familiar with this method of coping form some men in power HA!!
want to read some angst about women rulers take a look at what John Knox wrote about Elizabeth and her cousin Mary,. Queen of Scots, yes Knox was pretty TERRIFIED of women, said GOD ‘him’self was against it and it was monstrous. Then he ran to Scotland to avoid Elizabeth replying to him in kind, HA!
1558 - The First Blast of the Trumpet: Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women
http://www.swrb.ab.ca/newslett/actualNLs/firblast.htm
One of my favorite films is The Lion in Winter, I was watching it over the weekend and thinking how really nothing has changed over the centuries, still the same old male dominated society and back stabbing for political gain and power. Ho hum.
Anyway, love the Tudors, thanks NewHampster.
Thanks very much for the post; Like the poster above I am very interested in Tudor-Stuart History, and have emjoyed reading about her ever since the great series about Elizabeth starring Glenda Jackson come on PBS in the 1970’s. I preferred the original series to the various movies including the one with Helen Mirren, but I think Mirren was great in the role.
Uh, she didn’t “rule the world.” Not even close.
That’s carrying the Anglophilia to an extreme.
