Here’s my two cents on why Hillary is correct to take this job that carries with it such prominence, such power, such esteem, and such massive opportunities to do so very much good for both the United States and the entire world:
1) Hillary is over 21 and can do whatever she wants;
2) Hillary knows the “operators” in the White House and the Obama team like few others — and she knows the games they play far better than ALL OF US, combined!
3) Given this knowledge and extensive experience with Barack Obama and “crew,” Hillary knows what to expect and has an arsenal of tools that she has picked up over her two-plus decades of intense, non-stop experience in political arenas of all types, including EIGHT years in the White House as a true political partner with her husband.
4) Hillary has not only flown to 80+ countries, she has spent TIME in remote parts of Africa and Asia, in tiny villages, where she was a longtime advocate for impoverished WOMEN.
5) I have no doubt that Hillary will make sexism and misogyny part of her agenda as Secretary of State.
6) For a very long time, Hillary has understood the most COMPLEX international issues. I vividly recall one night — gosh, was it 2001 (something like that) — on PBS’s Charlie Rose show when she demonstrated that she has in-depth knowledge of EVERY international issue and potential crisis that the United States might face. I particularly recall how much she knew about North Korea.
7) I hate admitting this but I used to be one of the throngs who “hated” Hillary Clinton. And I watched that Charlie Rose show while “hating” Hillary Clinton, but noting how brilliant and knowledgeable she is.
Then it dawned on me one day in 2007 that I’d been duped into “hating” Hillary Clinton because of the years and years and years of attacks on her from the rightwing media, including Rush Limbaugh — who will no doubt be VERY entertaining to listen to tomorrow! He’ll be frothing at the mouth, I expect.
So what happened to me and to many “lefties” was this: Without consciously realizing it, we all were taught to “hate” Hillary Clinton by the far right.
That’s why the Daily Kos crowd went nuts every time one of us wrote diaries in favor of Hillary Clinton.
Yet, the Daily Kossacks NEVER conducted any rigorous self-examination of why they “hated” her. If they had, they would have realized that that hatred had its roots in what Rush Limbaugh et al. said about her. And they would have been as embarrassed and horrified as I was when it hit me.
I’d been kind of supporting Bill Richardson (yeah, well …) and then I saw him on TV a couple times, and he sounded like an idiot and he embarrassed me.
Then I listened to Hillary, and I liked what she was saying and I found myself — woah! — liking her too.
But I was afraid to tell anybody.
I finally told my closest female relative. She shocked me by saying that she too had been looking hard at Hillary as the candidate to support.
Then Larry Johnson called me one day, and I somewhat haltingly told him that I was looking at Hillary Clinton. He then told me his story of briefing her in her Senate office and how she’d knocked his socks off.
So we decided to express our support for Hillary on No Quarter.
Well, lord almighty, did we get creamed for that. But we persisted. I was somewhat shy about it because I didn’t like the angry comments. Larry was reserved about expressing his support and took his time to carefully state his reasons for supporting her. Then he wrote a great, great post about meeting her and how much she impressed him.
Slowly but surely, more and more people at No Quarter and new to No Quarter began gathering at No Quarter to talk about Hillary.
One of the attributes that Hillary Clinton has that drew us to her, and which we witnessed throughout the grossly unfair media coverage of her primary run, was her ability to stay on course and to keep fighting and to never give up.
Hillary Clinton has all the requisite moxie to handle her detractors who’ll plot against her in the Obama White House.
Hillary Clinton has all the needed resolve to keep fighting and to never let her detractors or the media get her down.
And, best of all, she’ll NEVER let any detractor keep her from doing a brilliant job as our Secretary of State.
She will be the best damn Secretary of State we could ever hope for.
We will have so much to be proud of as we watch her, from afar, perform her job so brilliantly.
Can you begin to imagine how she will begin to restore our relationships with nations around the world?
Oh, it will be glorious.
For now, if I may suggest how your mind should be focused: Please put a halt to your fretting about what the Obama cohorts might do to her, and IMAGINE ALL THE GOOD SHE WILL DO.
Just IMAGINE those poor women in those remote African villages she visited as First Lady, and how she will now be able to get back to helping them.
Hillary Clinton has NEVER forgotten those impoverished, mistreated African women. They surely have never forgotten her. And now they know she will return to them, and once again help them, as she did before when she set up economic plans to aid them in creating their own businesses with child care and good medical facilities.
IMAGINE the joy in those women’s hearts when they find out that Hillary Clinton will return and do more for them.

The New York Times had an article this morning about how the Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki is quietly firing the inspectors general for the 30 Iraqi ministries. These inspector generals have authority to investigate waste and corruption in the Iraqi government, which one Iraqi investigator testifying before the U.S. Congress estimated at $13 BILLION in “reconstruction” funds, apparently used to reconstruct the bank accounts of Iraqi officials. Perhaps this was the wink-wink deal between the Bush Administration and the Iraqi government in exchange for passing the agreement on status of forces and other self-governance issues. Interestingly, but not at all surprising for the New York Times, the article mentions that some of the investigators actually did their jobs in an aggressive manner, and cites the case of the former Iraqi Electricity Minister who was imprisoned for fraud and embezzelment, but who escaped from jail and fled to the United States. What the New York Times decided not to mention was that this minister escaped from jail with due to an assault on the prison by Blackwater Private Mercenary soldiers sent to free him, and that he provided extensive funds and support to our spanking new President Elect. I hope that Obamas supporters won’t strain or hurt themselves looking for the “change”, because it will be more of the same deals and corruption, and the New York Times will keep their mouths shut.

What I’ve feared the most with this election is the fact that the rest of the world (especially enemy intelligence) knows more about Obama than the average American, thanks entirely due to the sycophant MSM. The John Edwards muck was only surprising to people because the MSM turn their critical dial all the way down when covering liberals/democrats, just as they’ve done with Obama.

If it is true that Hillary has accepted, then it’s the biggest political mistake she’s ever made. When the Joe Biden predicted incident occurs, Hillary will make a convenient fallguy for any mishandling of the event. If there is no incident, Obama will set one up to frame her as incompetent or worse. In either case she’ll be ruined and will no longer be a threat in 2012, and Obama will no longer have to share rule of the democrat party with the Clintons. Remember, Obama is the worst kind of Narcissist and he doesn’t like to share the stage, literally and figuratively. If Hillary remained relatively independent in the Senate, she would be able to siphon off attention from Obama, and be a constant threat to him, just waiting for him to screw up.
You express my sentiments and misgivings about Sen. Clinton joining this narcissistic’s hive. She will be the fall gal for any and all of this ego’s blunders.

Hillary won’t mishandle any event, that’s the fly in your ointment. Appointing HRC to SOS is the smartest move Obama could make, and goes a long way toward making him tolerable in my eyes. It doesn’t excuse anything, nor does it give him a scintilla more experience or legitimacy. What it does, is gives me confidence that somebody has both common sense and guts enough to get the job done. Jo(k)e Biden might have foreign policy cred, but he’s a doof. Obama is wishy-washy. You know lots of people think Condi Rice is stupid. OR that September 11 th creeped up on her and she didn’t do her job. I do not think this is true. What i think is she was shouting at a wall, that ignored her so she played alone, because that what it takes to get a promotion in the bush white house. Colin Powell was SoS on 9/11. Madeline Albright was SoS under Clinton when all of the planning and fundraising by Al Queda for the 9/11 attacks took place. 9/11 was the result of years of inattention to escalating terrorist attacks that went mostly unanswered, walls that were thrown up between intelligence agencies by the likes of Jamie Gorelic, and a nonchalant attitude toward committed organized terrorism.
And if anyone thinks Condi Rice is stupid, I’m sure Obama got their vote.
The Clinton Administration was not asleep at the wheel, but the Republicans in Congress would not permit them to act. Every time the President or Richard Clarke or Madeline Albright raised the issue, all the Republican (and too many Democratic) Congressmen would scream “WAG THE DOG”, and accuse Clinton of manufacturing a threat just to throw a wrench into their impeachment follies. When Bush came into office, he played Mr. Backward (but he wasn’t just acting), and he sought to do the exact opposite of whatever Bill Clinton did, and any issues that Clinton emphasized were downplayed by Bush. Clinton and Clarke pleaded for bipartisan efforts against Osama, but all they got was partisan roadblocks. Then Bush came into office, and promptly went on extended vacations.

Thank you Rob G. These FACTS came out during testimony for the 911 Commission. Bush and his National Security Adviser Condi Rice ignored the intelligence brief saying Bin Laden was determined to attack the United States. The Bush Administration systematically ignore the warnings they received.

I don’t understand people who continue to write about how much power Hillary will have as SoS and how she’ll be able to pursue her own agenda. The SoS serves at the pleasure of the President and represents his agenda.

I would never trust O since he has been 100% unreliable so far. RBO has an interesting spin on this today and why she shouldn’t take it–besides the fact that he will control her, he will also get his hooks into Clinton’s donor base. I share your reservations, bell’. The position of SOS is to advise the president and help develop the foreign policy. With both Powell and Condi, I felt that it was the other way around. I feel Condi has been completely muzzled as SOS. The person with the most Soviet/Russian and eastern European knowledge has been seemingly shut out during the events of the past months but will most assuredly get the blame as things deteriorate with Russia. Maybe she deserves it, but I would certainly like to hear from her more.
The other issue is the management of the State Department. That is a political hornets nest. I don’t think Powell nor Condi did well in managing that little kingdom. SOS is a tough job that goes way beyond shaking hands while having your picture taken.
I believe Sen. Clinton is certainly up to the task and would be, in my opinion, the most politically powerful person appointed to that position in our lifetime. For the Obama circle-of-trust to hand over the State Department and foreign policy to the Clinton wing of the Democratic Party just doesn’t pass the smell test with me. Will it be a “co-presidency” in which Hillary manages foreign policy and Obama manages domestic? I just don’t see it.
I would love to hear Larry J’s take on the relationship between SOS and the State Department and the Presidency and how Hillary would manage those relationships. I’m sure he has some great insights into that world.

I agree, Lena, that it’s a very smart decision by Obama. She’s the best suited for the job, without a doubt.
Look, Hillary isn’t a naif! She’s highly intelligent, has vast experience, is a very savy politician, and isn’t in need of a job!! If Bobo offered her the job and she accepted it, she knows what she’s doing! Bill has indicated that he would be behind her on it, and do you know a smarter pol than he? Bobo may have been planning such a move for months, or he may have gotten a pre-Presidential briefing and turned ashen with dread. Remember the SNL skit and the cartoons about him calling her up at 3a.m., frantic for advice about what to do? Don’t you think he wants his Presidency to be successful? It can’t be if he continues to trot out nothing but Freudian-slipping gaffers and dizzy minions drunk on the Kool-Aid!
If he turns Hillary down, he will look like more of a bumbling fool than ever, and the rage that will result from Clintonista PUMAS like me will be totally beyond quelling. He can’t lose by choosing her! She’ll be part of the same administration, and she’ll sink or swim WITH Bobo. Why would either try to sabotage the other? Hillary wouldn’t spend his whole administration trying to undermine him with criticism, now would she?
Barack Obama, be a man! Tell your ball-busting wifey to go bake cookies, and do what you know is right and smart!

As a step up in career, Senator Clinton may be happy to accept the Secretary Of State position…it is an honor and she has earned the success!
From a personal prospective though, this is the last straw.
For any one who knows that BO is unqualified to lead this country to now comply with his every wish is a TOTAL turn off for me!

Hillary may be all that and more but why tie herself to this administration? Also since she will serve at Obama’s pleasure what is to prevent him from canning her 6 months into the job? We all know how quickly he threw his friends under the bus, what about his enemies?

I never bought into the Hillary-hate myself but was more than saddened to see others around me, thankfully no one close, do so over the years. I want to keep your post handy for others to read as the need arises.
You make a very good point too about HRC being an advocate for impoverished women. Such advocacy is something that is much needed and LONG overdue and I can’t think of a better person to carry it off.

Who is Valerie Jarrett? Characterized as “the other side of Barack Obama’s brain” by CBS News, Jarrett first met the Obamas seventeen years ago when she offered Michelle Obama a job. Since that time Jarrett has served as a very close advisor to both Obamas. While some have speculated that Jarrett is interested in taking Obama’s place in the U.S. Senate, the New York Times reported that it is more likely she will become a senior White House adviser. And that is terrible news.
Judicial Watch recently obtained documents linking Valerie Jarrett to a series of real estate scandals, including several housing projects operated by convicted felon and former Obama fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko.
According to the documents, which we obtained from the Illinois Secretary of State, Valerie Jarrett served as a board member for several organizations that provided funding and support for Chicago housing projects operated by real estate developers and Obama financial backers Antoin “Tony” Rezko and Allison Davis. (You may recall that Davis is also Obama’s former boss.)
Jarrett was a member of the Board of Directors for the Woodlawn Preservation and Investment Corporation along with several Davis and Rezko associates, as well as the Fund for Community Redevelopment and Revitalization, an organization that worked with Rezko and Davis. Jarrett wrote of her support for Davis/Rezko projects, and was also one of the strongest supporters in revitalizing two struggling Chicago banks which later provided loans and mortgages for the Davis/Rezko housing projects.
And what sort of housing projects were Davis and Rezko operating? According to press reports, housing projects operated by Davis and Rezko have been substandard and beset with code violations. The Chicago Sun Times (web site) reported that one Rezko-managed housing project was “riddled with problems — including squalid living conditions…lack of heat, squatters and drug dealers.” Davis, meanwhile, was nailed for a code violation when sewage began to seep through electrical outlets in one of his low income apartment buildings.
Of course, Jarrett would have no issues supporting these kinds of housing projects. As Chief Executive Officer of the Habitat Company, Jarrett managed a controversial housing project (web site) located in Obama’s former state senate district called Grove Parc Plaza. According to the Boston Globe, the housing complex was considered “uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage…In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale - a score so bad the buildings now face demolition.” It is no stretch to say that she was a slumlord. Jarrett refused to comment on the conditions of the complex.
