O, Come Let Us Adore Him

Oh, boy - this is quite some article by Howard Kurtz in the Washington Post (H/T to athy at No Quarter for this article). He really tells it like it is. I wonder if he still has a job there? Just the title alone gives it away:A Giddy Sense of Boosterism.”

Holy Toledo - is he allowed to SAY something like that?!?! I hope he has someone watching his back. At all times. Oh, but you’re not gonna believe some of the things our “media” have cooked up. Check this out:

Perhaps it was the announcement that NBC News is coming out with a DVD titled “Yes We Can: The Barack Obama Story.” Or that ABC and USA Today are rushing out a book on the election. Or that HBO has snapped up a documentary on Obama’s campaign.

Perhaps it was the Newsweek commemorative issue — “Obama’s American Dream” — filled with so many iconic images and such stirring prose that it could have been campaign literature. Or the Time cover depicting Obama as FDR, complete with jaunty cigarette holder.

Are the media capable of merchandizing the moment, packaging a president-elect for profit? Yes, they are.

Okay. NBC. ABC. Two of the major networks using OUR AIRWAVES have lost all semblance of journalistic integrity.

What the HELL is the matter with these people?!?!? Good grief, how in the world will they ever cover anything remotely challenging for The One??? Oh, right - what they care? They are clearly making a lot out of this:

What’s troubling here goes beyond the clanging of cash registers. Media outlets have always tried to make a few bucks off the next big thing. The endless campaign is over, and there’s nothing wrong with the country pulling together, however briefly, behind its new leader. But we seem to have crossed a cultural line into mythmaking.

“The Obamas’ New Life!” blares People’s cover, with a shot of the family. “New home, new friends, new puppy!” Us Weekly goes with a Barack quote: “I Think I’m a Pretty Cool Dad.” The Chicago Tribune trumpets that Michelle “is poised to be the new Oprah and the next Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis — combined!” for the fashion world.

Whew! Are journalists fostering the notion that Obama is invincible, the leader of what the New York Times dubbed “Generation O”?

I’m sorry - were you saying something? I couldn’t hear you through the grinding of my teeth. When did the MSM and the National Enquirer change places? If you will recall, this year, it was the latter that that actually broke some real news. The MSM? Not so much:

Each writer, each publication, seems to reach for more eye-popping superlatives. “OBAMAISM — It’s a Kind of Religion,” says New York magazine. “Those of us too young to have known JFK’s Camelot are going to have our own giddy Camelot II to enrapture and entertain us,” Kurt Andersen writes. The New York Post has already christened it “BAM-A-LOT.”

“Here we are,” writes Salon’s Rebecca Traister, “oohing and aahing over what they’ll be wearing, and what they’ll be eating, what kind of dog they’ll be getting, what bedrooms they’ll be living in, and what schools they’ll be attending. It feels better than good to sniff and snurfle through the Obamas’ tastes and habits. . . . Who knew we had in us the capacity to fall for this kind of idealized Americana again?”

I am seriously on the verge of being ill here. “It’s a Kind of Religion”??? Worshiping this lying, cheating, bamboozling, hoodwinking, race-baiting sham of a politician who hasn’t had an original idea I can discern, who got everywhere he is by stepping on the throats of others? THIS is a “kind of religion”? Okay, it is clear to me. We have gone to hell in a hand basket.

No doubt, Thomas Jefferson, who knew the importance of the Fourth Estate for maintaining a democracy, would be, check that, probably IS, rolling over in his grave right now. Kurtz asks the right question about this, well, INSANITY:

But aren’t media people supposed to resist this kind of hyperventilating?

“Obama is a figure, especially in pop culture, in a way that most new presidents are not,” historian Michael Beschloss says. “Young people who may not be interested in the details of NAFTA or foreign policy just think Obama is cool, and they’re interested in him. Being cool can really help a new president.”

So can a sense of optimism, reflected on USA Today’s front page. “Poll: Hopes soaring for Obama, administration,” the headline said, with 65 percent saying “the USA will be better off 4 years from now.”

Yeah, I saw that headline, too. I wondered who the hell they were talking to first, then realized it was probably an AP article. Sure enough, it was. Like they haven’t been in the tank all year long. Hahahaha.

And why, pray tell, would these young people think Obama is “cool,” yet know NOTHING for which he stands?? I mean, really - on what, exactly, are they making that determination? His listening to Ludacris? The misogyny? Reverend Wright’s racist ravings? What?? What a bunch of ridiculously uninformed children. And THEY are the future? Yikes. Sure will be interesting to see what happend if they ever get more than one brain cell to rub against another. Or as Kurtz puts it:

But what happens when adulation gives way to the messy, incremental process of governing? When Obama has to confront a deep-rooted financial crisis, two wars and a political system whose default setting is gridlock? When he makes decisions that inevitably disappoint some of his boosters?

“We’re celebrating a moment as much as a man, I think,” says Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham, whose new issue, out today, compares Obama to Lincoln. “Given our racial history, an hour or two of commemoration seems appropriate. But there is no doubt that the glow of the moment will fade, and I am sure the coverage will reflect that in due course.”

FDR?? LINCOLN?? Are they INSANE????? LINCOLN??? The ONLY thing Obama has in common with Lincoln is living in IL. FDR? What are you people SMOKING???

And, sure. You just know you can count on the media to reflect reality at SOME point, right? Because they have demonstrated time and again how willing they are to reveal the realities of who Obama really is, and what he has really done. Oh, yeah.

And not for nothing, but I sure as hell don’t remember the media being so glowing and positive about Hillary Clinton, who, since they were clearly unaware of this, was a “historical” figure by being a woman who received more votes than any other Democrat ever, as well as winning a primary, and a lot more than one. But hey, let’s bury THAT “moment” as quickly as possible so no one intrudes on The One’s ascension.

Thankfully (or despairingly), there is an itsy bitsy teensy weensy ray of light:

One of the few magazines to strike a skeptical tone is the London-based Economist, which endorsed Obama. “With such a victory come unreasonably great expectations,” its lead editorial says.

Naturally, it is European based, not US based. Big surprise. One could say that:

Web worship of Obama is nearly limitless. On YouTube alone, the Obama Girl song, “I’ve Got a Crush on Obama,” has been viewed 11.7 million times. Even an unadorned video of the candidate’s election night speech in Chicago has drawn 3.5 million views.

Can someone please tell me how it is that this virtual unknown with the thinnest resume I have ever seen, who couldn’t even get a full time job in any university or business on his lack of documentation, has manipulated the masses so masterfully with “words, just words” and no real deeds of which to speak? I mean, besides the characteristics he has demonstrated thus far besides those listed above?

Yes, this is a change:

I am not trying to diminish the sheer improbability of what this African American politician, a virtual unknown four years ago, has accomplished. Every one of us views his victory through a personal lens. I thought of growing up in a “Leave It to Beaver” era, when there were no blacks in leading television roles until Bill Cosby was tapped as the co-star of “I Spy” in 1965. When the Watts riots broke out that year, the Los Angeles Times sent an advertising salesman to cover it because the paper had no black reporters. The country has traveled light-years since then.

Is it nitpicky to point out that Obama is bi-racial, reared by his white and Indonesian family, not his African one at any time? But hey - why rain on (more of) their delusion? Those pesky facts, why am I bringing THOSE up? This is SPECIAL, you know:

It is hard to find a precedent in American history. Ronald Reagan was a marquee star because of his Hollywood career, but mainly among older voters, since he made his last movie 16 years before winning the White House in 1980. Jack Kennedy was a more formal figure after winning the 1960 election — “trying to look older than he was, because he thought youth was a handicap in running for president,” Beschloss says — but quickly took on larger-than-life dimensions.

“The Kennedy buildup goes on,” James MacGregor Burns wrote in the New Republic in the spring of 1961. “The adjectives tumble over one another. He is not only the handsomest, the best-dressed, the most articulate, and graceful as a gazelle. He is omniscient; he swallows and digests whole books in minutes; he confounds experts with his superior knowledge of their field. He is omnipotent.”

Soon afterward, Kennedy blundered into the Bay of Pigs debacle.

The media would be remiss if they didn’t reflect the sense of unadulterated joy that greeted Obama’s election, both here and around the world, and the pride even among those who opposed him. Newspapers were stunned and delighted at the voracious demand for post-election editions, prompting The Washington Post and other papers to print hundreds of thousands of extra copies and pocket the change. (When else have we felt so loved lately?) Demand for inaugural tickets has been unprecedented. Barack is suddenly a hot baby name. Record companies are releasing hip-hop songs, by the likes of Jay-Z and Will.I.Am, with such titles as “Pop Champagne for Barack.” Consumers, the Los Angeles Times reports, are buying up “Obama-themed T-shirts, buttons, bobblehead dolls, coffee mugs, wine bottles, magnets, greeting cards, neon signs, mobile phones and framed art prints.”

“Unadulterated joy”? That the MEDIA ITSELF created, and for which it fanned the flames?? Yeah, absolutely - don’t start having any kind of ethics now on our behalf! We might all fall over dead from the shock of it. So, please, just spare us and keep us in our little Happy Obama Place. Oh, yuck - making myself sick now…

Oh, and just in time for the holidays:

A barrage of Obama-related books are in the works. Newsweek’s quadrennial election volume is titled “A Long Time Coming: The Historic, Combative, Expensive and Inspiring 2008 Election and the Victory of Barack Obama.” Publishers obviously see a bull market.

Oh, JOY!!!! Another way for Americans to spend all of our hard earned, ever dwindling dollars! Yay!

And speaking of cheers:

MSNBC, which was accused of cheerleading for the Democratic nominee during the campaign, is running promos that say: “Barack Obama, America’s 44th president. Watch as a leader renews America’s promise.” What are viewers to make of that?

There is always a level of excitement when a new president is coming to town — new aides to profile, new policies to dissect, new family members to follow. But can anyone imagine this kind of media frenzy if John McCain had managed to win?

Obama’s days of walking on water won’t last indefinitely. His chroniclers will need a new story line. And sometime after Jan. 20, they will wade back into reality.

Do you PROMISE, Mr. Kurtz? Because I am WAY over all of this Messiah worship we have had to endure, even as the most qualified candidate in decades was kicking his butt in the primaries on a whole helluva lot less money (that untraceable mountain of Obama’s money. See Ani’s post, “Obama’s Questionable Internet Donations Raise Suspicion at WaPo.“). But hey - that never stopped the “media” from promoting their rapturous tale of who Obama was, how he was the One for whom we had been waiting, regardless of what the people said with their votes…I mean, really - how much reporting did they even do on the Michigan fiasco? How many people in this country really knew what happened there? How many people outside the states where there were caucuses actually knew about the vast amount of caucus fraud? Close friends in Baton Rouge had no idea about a lot of this because their state wasn’t contested, so how would THEY know what had really been going on? As one of them said, they sure didn’t see this on ABC News! No, indeed. And that is exactly the problem. So many of the issues that should have been covered about Obama simply were not, or left to the “News Briefs” section. Not so for anything the least bit suspect or negative about any of the other candidates (or if it was one of Obama’s BFFs, like John Edwards. In that case, the MSM buried critical information the voters deserved to know.). And on it goes…

You may have seen this new video already, but personally, I find this to be a glaring indictment of the Fourth Estate,as if the above was not enough (H/T to American Girl in Italy for the heads up on this):

Holy Toledo. Add these results of the Zogby Poll commissioned by John Ziegler of “How Obama Got Elected“, and bear in mind these were MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS:

512 Obama Voters 11/13/08-11/15/08 MOE +/- 4.4 points

97.1% High School Graduate or higher, 55% College Graduates

Results to 12 simple Multiple Choice Questions

57.4% could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by guessing)

81.8% could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by guessing)

82.6% could NOT correctly say that Barack Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by guessing)

88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by guessing)

56.1% could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by guessing).

And yet…..

Only 13.7% failed to identify Sarah Palin as the person on which their party spent $150,000 in clothes

Only 6.2% failed to identify Palin as the one with a pregnant teenage daughter

And 86.9 % thought that Palin said that she could see Russia from her “house,” even though that was Tina Fey who said that!!

Only 2.4% got at least 11 correct.

Only .5% got all of them correct. (And we “gave” one answer that was technically not Palin, but actually Tina Fey)

Just to be clear - Palin did not ask for the clothes the MSM made such a brouhaha about, and she did not keep them. They were given to, or will be auctioned off for, charity.

For an added bonus, you can watch this John Stoessel interview of voters:

YIKES. Are people not required to take Civics classes any longer?? Really??

What a sad, sad state of affairs, for our educational system, for the Fourth Estate, for democracy, and for this country. We reap what we sow…

When Obama and the Dems pass the fairness doctrine, he’s going to arrest Hannity, Savage, Rush and O’Reilly and put them in jail. We should start a legal defense fund to pay for their lawyers to fight this an d get them out of jail.

Comment by notrees | 2008-11-20 14:44:44

watch your racist mouth or you will need the lawyer. ;(

Comment by bob | 2008-11-20 14:47:43

Huh? What was racist? The fairness doctrine is reality. What if the Dems require the internet to be fair?

Yes, notrees was clearly being sarcastic. Are we going to need to now watch, “Gee, do I sound sarcastic enough? What if people think I’m being serious? This kind of fearful approach to writing political satire is not good for the humor endeavor on No Quarter, and elsewhere. And clearly, a large part of the joy of NQ is the funny stuff. The title of this thread is “O Come Let Us Adore Him,” just in time for Barackmas. Do I have to worry about whether people think I am being sarcastic or not? Well, I don’t, and I won’t.

With the sanctimonious attitude towards Mr. O that is rampant in the adoring media, one thing is now needed above all else: iconoclasm.

Hannity, Limbaugh and Savage won’t be arrested. The Fairness Doctrine will just make them have a Liberal sitting next to them to counter their bullshit. They may QUIT radio though because they won’t be able to spew their crap unanswered anymore.

Comment by bob | 2008-11-20 15:00:46

Hannity and Rush are mean sometimes so if they quit, I don’t mind. But Dr. Savage is really intelligent and funny. I hope Dr. Savage doesn’t quit. Did you know his son owns a drink company? Smart family.

Actually, from what I can see there is no interest in the Fairness Doctrine being passed. I just finished reading this article on it: http://www.tnr.com/toc/story.html?id=68d07041-7dbc-451d-a18a-752567145610

Comment by It's Not Me | 2008-11-20 16:55:46

I’m creepy because I’m not a ditto head? LOL…that’s too funny.

You do know we just endured 8 long, MISERABLE years of conservatives in power, right? Now look at our country. It’s imploding. And don’t throw that crud about the Democrats controlling congress now at me because the psycho-in-chief and his corrupt Republican cronies were in TOTAL CONTROL of our government from 2000-2006 and prior to that they had control of Congress since 1995. 11 YEARS they held the power of our government. The Dems have been in control of Congress for 2 years. Limbaugh, Savage, O’LIElly and Hannity only helped further the Republican’s DISASTROUS agenda AND the MSM helped them do it! The MSM installed Bush just like they did BO. Remember…Bush would be GREAT to have a beer with? He’s Mr. Compassionate Conservative? He’s Mr. Heartland America? What a crock ‘o crap.

They were cheerleaders for his freakin’ illegal invasion of Iraq and they allowed their so-called “journalists” to be embedded through THE PENTAGON! Forcryingoutloud. How on earth could that bode well? How could the American people to get the actual TRUTH? They didn’t.

MSNBC actually fired Phil Donahue, THE HIGHEST RATED SHOW ON THEIR NETWORK, because they wanted to compete with Fox News and cheer lead for the illegal invasion and Phil Donahue was anti-war.

So…who’s creepy?

I DO hope the Fairness Doctrine is reinstated.

Comment by FembotsForObama | 2008-11-20 17:25:05

Bush and his cronies couldn’t have done the things they did without the utter COMPLICITY of the Democratic Party. How many DEMOCRATS read the Patriotic Act? Remember who was the biggest liar about WMDs? It was the bloody New York Times, a paper that up until that point I had held in the most esteem.

Don’t assume the Fairness Doctrine will do what you think it will — make sure a Democrat counters Rush and Hannity. You assume that the FD will make news stations ADD people to the conversation. I submit that it will engage in a form of censorship by subtracting people (like Hannity, Rush, etc.) from the airwaves.

As always the Devil is in the Details.

And this Liberal Democrat stopped believing that the media portrayed the real news, and a moderately unbiased perspective, while witnessing their behavior during this election season. If anyone will be to blame for the demise of the Fairness Doctrine, it will be the mainstream media itself who chose to not vet Obama, and then after he was elected admitted that they didn’t know anything about him, and had kept their real concerns about the “creature” that is Obama to themselves.

Comment by trixta | 2008-11-20 19:21:10

Whom will MSNBC select to balance out the misogyny of Mathews and Olberman?

Comment by Country First | 2008-11-20 15:22:56

If I want a liberal point of view I’ll watch the MSM news (?) programs; if I want a different point of view, I’ll listen to Hannity or Limbaugh. We are shoveled plenty of liberal manure on tv, thank you very much and I’m perfectly capable of choosing my own radio show and don’t want the government attempting to force me to listen to something I don’t choose to hear. Give me a break. All I wanted to hear from MSM was truth, and they failed. What will they try to shut down next? the internet?

Comment by FembotsForObama | 2008-11-20 17:32:34

you betcha!

And shutting down the internet is not a conspiratorial idea. Congress people have been discussing various ways to capitalize on internet use for the last few years. One idea I’ve heard put forward repeatedly is to regulate access akin to how we access cable. Different income levels pay for certain amount of usage. Items deemed security risks would only be allowed to institutions like universities and government agencies. This is being proposed as a way to make the internet more affordable for everyone.

This is just one such idea that has been proposed about internet regulation.

Comment by jackie | 2008-11-20 17:41:02

BS. It is an attempt to stiffel the conservative voice on the radio since the liberal attempts to compete with them directly have all failed miserably.

These shows are market driven. If I want to listen to Rush (not willingly) I should be allowed. If I do not choose to listen to the crap from Olberman and Matthews that is MY CHOICE.

The so called fairness doctrine is an attempt to block free speech unless it conforms tot he Reid, Pelosi, Obama views and you all should be horrified. This so called “doctrine” is nothing more than a full out assault on the Constitution.

You vote with your dial. I don’t watch MSNBC or certain CNN shows because thay are without journalistic integrity. I don’t watch Hannity or listen to Rush because I think they are boobs. But we are entitlied to hear all sides and if the liberal talkshow hosts cannot compete for market share that should tell the geniuses in charge that some moderation in their moonbat views is required. Give me a reasonable and entertaining alternative to Rush and Hannity and lets see what happens.

Comment by ritamary | 2008-11-20 16:16:06

Bob, what you are saying about the fairness doctrine is pure nonsense. The fairness doctrine was still around when I was a kid. It meant differing opinions had to be given equal time.

A healthy democracy can handle youngsters. Look at China. Riots, mass suppression in the 60s. Compare that to our society. Obamabots aggravating us in the lunchroom.

That’s a huge, huge difference. I’ll take annoying anytime over the alternative.

The media? They cooked their goose. I never click on an AP article now. Unbelievable. A lifetime of solid reputation, and I now view it as probably another spin piece that is misleading. They trashed their own reputation. Why? I have no clue. I can’t figure out what they are thinking they will get from adopting this editorial policy.

All I know? I’m glad for the journalistic tradition of announcing, based on AP. That means I can skip it.

He hasn’t done ANYTHING yet and they are making him out to be FDR, JFK and Lincoln all rolled into one and then some.

History is one thing but they are setting him up for the world’s biggest fall — no one could match these idiotic accolades — no one. They are making complete asses of themselves.

Historic? He won with a $1 billion war chest, caucus fraud and the media fawning over him daily for a year — and with boobs above who wouldn’t know a fact or issue if it bit them. Let’s analyze that.

McCain still had the opportunity to win, in my opinion, and somehow missed every chance that was presented.

http://www.businessandmedia.org/articles/2008/20081120093001.aspx

Now, McCain adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin admits the Their aimless, principle-less lurching on the bailout issue was a “blunder.”

Both McCain and President-elect Barack Obama voted for the bill, which has taken on a different role since being promoted as a measure that would have given the Secretary of the Treasury the authority to purchase the troubled assets thought to be behind the current financial crisis.

Holtz-Eakin said it was a move of desperation because the campaign was taking a lot of criticism for not being more proactive at the time.

“Financial markets were falling apart,” Holtz-Eakin said. “We were in a terrible position as a campaign in trying to figure out whether to continue to just take hits–which we were–or to try to do something about it when the bailout bill was stalled. We elected to go do something about it. It didn’t pay off as a campaign largely because getting that bill through was not helpful.”

He advised the audience, which included several economists and policy analysts, to evaluate the strategy if confronted with having to choose between politics or core policy beliefs.

“If anyone is ever in a comparable position before us, take the time–or again in the future, take the time to step back and ask, ‘Is this a good policy move? Will it really help?’” he said.

The bailout legislation, which was promoted by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson as a do-or-die vote, has been roundly criticized by Republican members of Congress. Holtz-Eakin explained this bill was something McCain normally wouldn’t have supported.

“That was the key strategic error that we really made,” Holtz-Eakin added. “Had we stayed away from Washington, stayed away from being identified with that bill – which was ultimately against the John McCain brand– that’s not a bill he normally would support– we would have been better served in the long run, I believe. But, that financial market meltdown combined with bad strategic decisions, I think, was a real crippling combination of events.”

But this isn’t news. It’s not even analysis. It’s unadulterated worship with little to no mention of policy, achievements, or those who supported Obama’s rise.

Obama himself promised to release all of his personal documents after the election. His relatives said they would speak out on Nov 5th.

None of his promised records have been released and all of his known relatives still living are silent.

Heck, we can’t even find out if his grandmother has had funeral. All other public figures, Republicans and Democrats alike, have announced when one of their loved ones has passed and that there would be a funeral. Even when they ask for privacy at the actual event.

Obama has proved nothing has changed. There are different rules for an African American President vs. everyone else. Obama gets a free pass in the MSM solely based on being an African American. Too bad that didn’t apply to Shirley Chislom. But she never asked for that and disdained the idea.

There goes content of character and in comes color of skin. The exact opposite of what MLK advocated.

Comment by Belarus | 2008-11-20 15:25:31

There was a public wake for his grandmother at the Punch Bowl Cemetery. It was last week, I think.

Shirely Chisolm — now if I had been old enough I would have definitely campaigned for her! That woman had balls of steel. She took on the establishment and was a class act to boot.

Perhaps, you may have heard of the president that at the time of his election was considered to be “Black” because of his ancestry. Does anyone know who this was?

It was interesting to hear Bill Moyers and his guest speak in such glowing terms about Barack’s father as an immigrant to this country. HELLOOOO! His father never immigrated to this country. HE was a foreign student. Barack and his Mother EMMIGRATED from this country. They lived in Indonesia for years. Barack was probably an Indonesian citizen and his mother too. Barack’s fater was never a citizen here. Are these people so drunk on the Kool aid that reason has been obliterated.

His mother is from Kansas.

Get a grip.

Your dream story of how he’s illegal is over.

Comment by ritamary | 2008-11-20 16:21:50

Obama’s mother was from Kansas but she did spend many years living in Indonesia and so did her son. I am not an advocate for the phony birth certificate story. However, are you denying that Barack and his mother lived in Indonesia?

Comment by OBAMA IS A FRAUD | 2008-11-20 16:46:43

Ann…Really. YOU “get a grip” about the “illegal” thing. If and when YOU see a REAL BC then you can troll along about it. This issue is not going to go away so you might as well live with people talking about it. Thank God people care enough about our country to pursue it.

Comment by FembotsForObama | 2008-11-20 17:43:35

Ann, Obama’s mother was born in Kansas but spent most of her growing up years in Washington and Hawaii.

Think about this:

Obama travelled to Pakistan during the 1980s when it was illegal for Americans to travel there. How did Obama get in when no other American citizen could?

It is completely plausible that Obama had another passport from a different country. One from Kenya or Indonesia would have worked. But without a doubt an American one wouldn’t.

Comment by Elizabeth | 2008-11-20 18:20:13

If Obama isn’t even a US citizen, by right of birth or inheritance, it’s difficult to speculate how a US passport could be obtained.

But American or not, a birth in Kenya cannot ever be considered “natural born” as the Constitution stipulates. That is absolutely an open and shut case.

AFAIK, US Law very clearly states: ‘. . . if only one parent is a U.S. Citizen at the time of one’s birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for a minimum of ten years, five of which must be after the age of 16. Barack Obama’s father was not a U.S. Citizen. Obama’s mother was only 18 when Obama was born. This means even though she had been a U.S. Citizen for 10 years, (or citizen of Hawaii being a territory), his mother fails the test for at-least-5-years-prior-to Barack Obama’s birth, but-after-age-16. In essence, Mother alone is not old enough to qualify her son for automatic U.S. Citizenship.

That depends on what the 9 Justices at the Supreme Court decide on Dec 5th.

If he is found Constitutionally ineligible to be Prez, will he be deported then? At least he has two options — Kenya or Indonesia.

Hell, no wonder BO was elected. People are too stupid to know better!

I knew the answers to all those questions and every citizen of this country SHOULD. Pathetic.

Comment by Belarus | 2008-11-20 14:54:48

Actually, you would get the same results from Mccain supporters, no doubt. Like the woman who went up to Mccain and said that Obama was an Arab. That kind of ignorance flows both ways. If anything, the vast majority of college graduates and people with post-graduate degrees voted for Obama.

Obama won more because people were convinced that Mccain just didn’t understand the economy, and the economy became the number one issue in the middle September and that was really the end of it, probably regardless of the three presidential debates and everything else. Plus, Obama had much, much more money for advertising.

Comment by It's Not Me | 2008-11-20 14:58:50

And the right-wing has Rush L. and O’Reilly.

It balances out, guys.

Comment by sandshark222 | 2008-11-20 15:07:01

Not really balanced out at all, because Rush, Hannity, Levin, etc they’re restricted to radio or Fox.

The Obots have almost all the newspapers, all the local news channels, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, CBS, BBC, Newsweek, New Yorker, TIME, NYT, etc etc.

How is a small handful of talk show hosts a fair balance to the entire media? I’m sorry, but I don’t think that’s exactly even.

While I don’t really agree with everything some of those guys like O’Reilly say, this IS America last time I checked, and they’re allowed to express their opinions, thanks to the first amendment. Unless the Obots have their way and silence the opposition.

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-11-20 15:10:38

I haven’t been at home and caught a major news TV show in at least 7 years.

I am often in my car, driving, and catch the radio programs.

Not that they influence me, really.

I wouldn’t ever see a NYT’s article if it weren’t on-line. I seek that out.

Ditto now, even for my local paper. I haven’t subscribed to the LA TIMES for 10 years.

Sorry, but I see nearly everything on-line and on U-tube.

I wouldn’t even know half these guys you all rant over if it weren’t for u-tube.

I have never, ever once run into Chris Matthews on TV. Not once.

I do watch Meet the Press.

I listen to NPR.

That’s about it.

Comment by sandshark222 | 2008-11-20 15:15:01

but… What about the average person that clicks on their local news or CNN maybe once a week, that isn’t a political junkie like ourselves? They clearly aren’t getting all the information, and the biased views that the MSM is giving them may easily influence their opinions.

If the MSM did its job, my gut tells me Obama wouldn’t have been elected.

If you are a Democratic Party supporter in any way what was done to Rev. Wright was a disgrace. having a degree does not make someone intelligent nor have common sense. In this day and age, I’ve never seen a generation given so much without being asked to do so little for it.

And I disagree, the proportional number of people who would have known the answers to those questions would have been much higher on the McCain side. He had more of the older vote and college grad or not, older people tend to be more concerned about actual issues than if someone is cool or not.

Comment by notrees | 2008-11-20 15:05:38

People have a habit of putting others on pedestals.

That’s half of my posts here. Take Hillary off the pedestal, but give her real credit where it’s due.

Ditto for so much of this election.

On this, we agree 100%.

Education is an avenue of opening up thinking skills. Nothing more.

I agree with conservative students who complain about professors who are prejudiced against them. I saw it. I’ve been around academics for more than 30 years. It’s a real problem.

I also know that pedantic students schooled in right-wing thinking will, obviously, fail in higher education because they are too boxed in.

That’s also true.

Education really shouldn’t be politicized.

It needs to be about weighing pros and cons.

Using the techniques of rational discourse, etc.

Once any poster resorts to ad hominim attacks?

That poster has basically thrown in the towel and announced, “I’ve been beaten logically.”

I’m now going to be nasty. *haha

Ditto on the bigger picture level.

Comment by Rob G in Chicago | 2008-11-20 17:20:33

Anti-bigot:

While you may not agree with McCain’s economic policies, you don’t have to misquote him to prove your point. If you were honest, you would have provided the full quotation and the context in which it was said. McCain was speaking in relative terms, and comparing his knowledge on economic issues with his knowledge of national security and foreign affairs issues. you and this community at NQ could toss stupid sound bute mini-sentences at each other all day long, but only one of the candidates had any record of accomplishments from which a voter might discern how he would likely react in a given crisis. He was honest in saying that he didn’t know as much about economic issues as he should, but Obama is a noephyte in that area as well. Hell, any President has a group of economic advisors, and it is simplistic to describe his economic preferences and policies as simply “tax cuts for the rich”, just as it is simplistic to describe Obama’s policies as simply socialistic robinhoodism.

The site is changing. . It moved far to the right, relying on people who if they did not wear whirte sheets whould have loved to. Some of them still post here, however even Larry is now prepared to tackle them. The disgusting bigot “Soldiuer of Christ” has been called up publicy for anti semitism. That is a start.

Comment by andrew191 | 2008-11-20 23:50:17

AntiBigot? I’ve been around long enough to know that when people apply sanctimonious labels to themselves that they are more than likely either hiding something, lying to themselves, or projecting.

You simultaneously ask for debate and then use the cheapest most vile form of shutting down debate by crying racist i.e.(wearing white sheets, and the straw man reference to Soldier of Christ)

Whenever Obama wasn’t accusing his opponents of racism he was predicting that they would be racist. It doesn’t matter that it never happened, he planted the thought and his pathetic followers believed it did happen.

Nevertheless, I for one would still be happy to debate your foul distortion of McCains economic statement that is one of the most spectacular examples of a gracious compliment being taken grossly out of context. Every time it’s repeated is another reminder of how the MSM has dumbed down this country. You shouldn’t use it again until you understand the situation in which it was said.

The MSM fawning over their false messiah really sends a tingle down my spine. Not the Chris Matthews kind of tingle, but the eerie, this is scary kind of tingle. No human being should be worshiped.

Obama is a politician, not a god or diety. I like and respect Hillary, yet I do not worship her. I like and respect Palin, yet I do not worship her. I like and respect McCain, yet I do not worship him. I like and respect Reagan and Clinton, yet I do not worship them.

I understand that they are all people, have imperfections, and they are also politicians. To think otherwise is stupid and down right dangerous.

Not to mention if you read between the lines and look past all the rhetoric from Obama, you will see a man that doesn’t have America’s best intentions at heart. You see a man with a lot of radical, racist/marxist ties, and you see a man who’s beliefs are against everything our democracy stands for.

I refuse to call Obama a democrat, because he is NOT what the democratic party has always stood for. The party is supposed to stand for the working man, the businessman, the entropeneur, the hard working joe, the everyman. The party is supposed to defend our principles of democracy, not undermind them (see ACORN).

Most importantly, the dems in the past have always supported our military. I don’t see the same from Obama. Have you heard his plans for the military? Seems like being a secure, safe nation is not high on his agenda; he’s more concerned with being a ‘global citizen’. He refuses to credit our troops with the success of the surge. You don’t have to agree with the war to support our troops, my friend.

I could go on and on but the more I type about him the more nauseous I become.

I understand what you are saying. But, you had access to the internet. And we are all political junkies here.

My hubby who is an avid newspaper reader (our local, the NYT, Washington Post, the Village Voice) and is fairly well informed had a real hard time believing me about the complete campaign of misinformation that the media was putting out there in their drive to annoint Obama president. If it hadn’t been for the fact that I am a diehard Liberal and was conducting research to get ammo to counter misinformation about Obama because I had been planning on campaigning FOR Obama, he would have thought I was nuts. And I did hear the occasional remarks about me becoming a Republican.

Until I inundated him with mass print outs from the internet, including foreign newspapers, the British and Canadians were doing a whole lot more questioning about Obama than our media was about not only his credentials but who was on his team, my hubby thought I was too proHillary blinded because he didn’t see it or read it anywhere in the American press.

He was like I had been and so many other Dems who fail to believe that anything valid could come from Fox news. Air America Radio had been feeding this idea along with the Liberal blogosphere that Fox news was just a mouthpiece of the Bush administration and Repubs. I would still listen and watch periodically, as well as read the WSJ and peruse Drudge, but had too much anger to really hear sometimes what they were saying until this year. Because my own research began confirming what Fox was saying. But Fox didn’t even go far enough in its research until the last couple of weeks before the election.

Did anyone once see anything about the COLB issue, or Penny Pritzker, or really hear anything about Chicago? Most politicians would have put a huge spotlight on their own backyard to highlight their accomplishments. But Obama didn’t. Probably because of the Rezko trial. Except for Rev. Wright which was so obviously an issue that the media could not escape from reporting on it, the rest of campaign issues that would normally have been front page news during any other campaign season, was suspiciously absent!

But they sure made sure to make it known that Palin’s baby may have really been her daughters!

Incidentally, I had met some Obama supporters way early on after Obama’s announcement to run, they had just read his book and were talking about going to see him at an event in Chicago. Being the kind of person I am, I just questioned them about Obama’s record and other accomplishments because I really wanted to know and hadn’t read the book yet. That’s the first time I had my head bitten off by Obama supporters because I told them a person’s autobiography wasn’t a valid source for information if it couldn’t be verified. That’s when I began reading the Chicago newspapers which had less glowing things to say about Obama.

Comment by Patience | 2008-11-20 21:25:09

This is very similar to what I’ve experienced with my husband. Except my husband STILL won’t accept anything negative about Obama that isn’t reported in what HE considers to be the “legitimate” media. I’ve given up!

I hope they catch on, dignity and class are important, here.

Same with the Lincoln shtick — Obama emerges from the filthy, if shallow swamp, that is the horrifically corrupt IL political scene, perhaps the least qualified President ever, showing NONE of Lincoln’s intrinsic intellect.

I’ve been posting the following when this situation comes up on a thread:

Quite a few of my comments were not posting, and I could not guess why. They appeared to be inoffensive and unobjectionable. I was puzzled, because most of my nasty offensive comments were getting through. Rewording and reposting didn’t help. I wondered if a moderator was rejecting them for some unknown reason (I’m saying stupid things? Could be!) I finally wrote to NQ and received the following response.

Some of your comments are getting flagged as spam by Akismet, the external spam-blocking service we use. It’s difficult to say why, because they use fuzzy logic and sometimes false positives occur. But unfortunately, when you attempt to re-post the same comment, that pretty much guarantees that Akismet will decide you’re a spammer, since duplicate comments are a hallmark of spammers.

Since this seems to be an intermittent effect, I suggest that if a comment of yours disappears, you simply send a note here and do NOT attempt to re-post.

Also, you could try using a different computer and/or a different email address.

Sorry

If Bobo gets past the legalities to inauguration, we had all better hope that he seeks out the middle and gets down to the business of being an elected official in a republic. If anyone on the far left or far right was pulling strings, I hope he throws them off and seeks out the advice of sensible people like Hillary. (If you choose her, Bobo, I promise to quit calling you that!)
A good deal of his credibility, to me personally, rests on whether he will nominate her. I wouldn’t be surprised if the two of them have been planning this for months. I’ve ignored him so much that I only recently learned that she made over 130 campaign appearances for him. And, if I were Hillary, I’d rather be SoS than VP. Who, besides Cheney (the Master half of Master/Blaster) ever had much power as veep? And the fact that he chooses her as SoS, if he does, will show that he WANTS HER COUNSEL and isn’t just picking her as a measure to get elected.
Before you throw Spike Lee under the bus, Bobo, listen once more to his words, and do the right thing!

Belarus,

You mentioned the woman at the McCain rally who thought Obama was an Arab. You inferred that that was a stupid question, or that she was stupid not to know better.

For your information, there are a lot of people who have been asking that same question. Partially due to the fact that we do not really know what his real ancestery is. His father’s tribe - the Luo - is from the part of Africa that was controlled by the Arabs. In fact, the slave trade in that part of Africa was controlled by the Arabs. Many Arabs have dark skin like Obama.

Since Mr. Obama refuses to show any documentation concerning his birth, ancestery, or place of origin he has left himself open to speculation.

The certificate of live birth (COLB) that he posted on the internet has been proven to be a fake. He refuses to produce the original. Until he does so, many people are still going to believe that he is indeed part Arab.

Perhaps if the Supreme Court decides to take up the lawsuit concerning his eligibility we will know the true answer. If not, or until then, don’t chastise anyone for believing what they read and hear concerning this matter. It has been widely publicised in some London newspapers, although the American newspapers don’t choose to ask him the question - where is your birth certificate?

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-11-20 15:46:21

Oh good grief…….

Comment by sandshark222 | 2008-11-20 15:55:55

Comment by lark | 2008-11-20 15:56:05

There are three branches of government at the federal level. Each branch covers for the other two. It is a fail proof system. The elected President don’t have a BC. The SC will keep him safe from scrutiny. Congress will reward the SC.

That’s actually incorrect. I don’t know a huge amount about African tribes. But the Luo are native blacks. If you look at pictures of Barack’s father or his African relations, they are native Africans.

There is nothing even remotely Arabic about their features.

Comment by lee M | 2008-11-20 19:24:02

Belarus,

Go back to my comment and read it over again. I said that his father was of the Luo tribe. I did not say the Luo tribe was Arabic. I said this is the region that was occupied by the Arabic slave traders. I asked you not to chastise a woman who asked McCain a reasonable question based on what she had been hearing and reading.

As for his features, some people are even saying that he resembles his Indonesian step-father. Compare all the pictures you please, it doesn’t prove anything except that many Africans have many diverse physical features, as do peoples of any other ethnic group.

You missed my point altogether. I was simply asking you not to characterize a person as stupid because they were asking about something they had read in a newspaper.

Some facts, Obama displayed his birth certificate on his web site.

Rumours about how fake the birth certificate was came from this site encouraged by posters TexasDarlin and TechDude. They claimed that the COLB was photoshopped and that TechDude was an expert at using Photoshop and could get behind the original image.

Larry raised the issue of NPR.

Larry Johnson then himself demanded more evidence off TexasDarlin. TexasDarlin mysteriously lost contact of TechDude and subsequently stopped posting here.

No other media picked up the story after it was found the many similarities between the posts of TechDude here, and of “another”?? at Stormfront. While NoQuarter may have more that its fair share of believers that Obama is a Terrorist Arab Bush Lite, illegal alien born abroad, it has not quite got to Stormfront levels yet.

I have never seen a couple that has to always compare themselves and what they do to others. They are a TOTALLY MANUFACTURED and marketing prop. An idea or position “like….” an agenda “like a NEW, New…” …as a male politician…”like JFK” (HARDLY)…as a first Lady…she’s like Jackie Kennedy (AGAIN, HARDLY).

Nice to see that this couple is so plastic, they can’t be themselves.

But, they started this campaign trying to paint a false picture, so why stop now.

And, we must thank GOD the media isn’t blasting Michelles photo’s pre election and make-over (and heavy makeup) all over the place.

And isn’t it funny that they are trying to compare Michelle O to Jackie Kennedy, when they purposely cut her hair ad styled it, purchased all new clothes, A lines and the same style dresses of the era, with the softer colors, PURPOSEFULLY TRYING TO MAKE HER LOOK LIKE JACKIE? OY VEY!

I remember talking with a man who was our security guard when I was volunteering John McCain. He asked me why I was supporting John McCain. He gave me the campaign tpm that O-shit! was just like JFK and I yelped Oh Please, he’s nothing like JFK.

JFK served 2 term in the US House, was elected to a 2nd Term in the Senate and served in the Military. What did O-shit! do? He started running for president after 2 years in the Senate. And then they go to “no, their talking style”. NO, NOT EVEN. JFK was very SPECIFIC and was a straight shooter. He didn’t talk in generalities and fluff.

The good news here is that the media is giving us all GAG factor. They are pushing this so much, with the typical american attention span and capacity, they will be so done with this within 6 months.

And that clock has been running.

They were already tired of him in the Primary.

The media is trying to keep the hype up for his Inauguration. They don’t want people tuning out before that day. They’ve invested much in Barry don’t forget. You might say they through the entire bank at him.

Lets see if folks are already sick of their manufactured hype on the manufactured candidate, now President elect. Ugh, just saying that, I can’t picture having to deal with this yutz for 4 years. There is a bright light. Soon enough he will be just “former” and out of the spotlight.

I’m not leaving. I’m staying and fighting.

I have to tell ya, as part of my job responsibilities, I have been involved with minority business associations and these folks know how to throw a celebration (as long as someone else is fitting the bill). They go all out, lavishly! I can imagine what the Inauguration will be like. I have experienced these parties first hand. I have also been privy to some of their stategy. They will get what they want and where they want because they band together and bombard with mail, e-mail, boycotts, bullying, etc, etc. They do it to TV stations, retail businesses, grocery stores, department stores, big oil companies and on and on. You have seen it in action, but might not have recognize it.

I’m not being racist! I’m talking about stategy here.

So, except for the lavish celebrations, we can do the same. We can make our contacts, start our boycotts, etc. etc. What we lack is the organizing. That is what Barack did. Organized.

But we have NQ to organize us

It’s good stragey and it works.

As for the lavish celebration for the Inauguration? That will be a black mark on Obama’s record when it’s all said and done. That is a display of poor judgment during the current economic crisis and the bailout of those bad mortages.

Comment by TheAntiBigot | 2008-11-20 16:46:35

The lavish celebrations people will have is one third to celebrate Obama winning and TWO THIRDS to celebrate teh fact that the President who put us up the creek is gone.

War Trials would probably get as big a turnout again as the Inauguration.

As for his 500 Million Dollar Inaugural Bash? That WILL haunt him. It wasn’t too long ago that he spent OUR money on the 60 Million Dollar “America Sucks World Tour” and took 200 of his friends to the fanciest restaurants, hotels, and all first class travel. ON US. The there was the 100 Million Dollar “Toga Party at Mile High” where the Fraud stood in front of his doped up worshipers talking about poverty, while standing on a white carpet that cost 1 Million Dollars on its own. Now, he not only wants an Inaugural Ball, but an “Inaugural Week.” Think about the fact that one night usually costs 40-50 Million Dollars, but he is throwing himself the bash of America’s History. Who the F**K does this azzhole think he is? If anyone needs a bigger sign that he’s a complete jerk…think about the market, the people losing their homes, etc. and all this loser wants to do is spend more money on himself. Soaring costs for inauguration could break the bank for D.C.

For the Obot freak…The SECURITY ALONE more than 15 MILLION. Give me a BREAK. And this is just ONE NIGHT. Never mind the whole “week” of festivities Fraudbama has planned.

By Leah Fabel
Examiner Staff Writer 11/18/08

Emily J. Reynolds/For The Examiner Soaring costs expected to accompany huge crowds in town for the Jan. 20 inauguration of Barack Obama could stick cash-strapped Washington, D.C., with a record-breaking bill for services.

Security and capacity measures recommended by the District’s congressional delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and others will almost certainly surpass the $15 million the federal government gives to the District each year to defray the cost of events, Norton said.

King Agamemnon returned from his long adventure to his kingdom — where his wife, Clytemnestra, had been holding down the fort — doing the hard work of governing. [These are characters from Greek mythology.]

When Agamemnon returns Clytemnestra has his path from his boat to the palace covered in rugs (an opulent display of wealth for the returning war hero along with Cassandra the seer, who sees what is going to happen — but who the hell listens to women, anyway?)

This huge display of wealth — the rugs — and Agamemnon’s tromping on the rugs is one of the things that got him done in. Of course, this being a Greek myth (drawing perhaps on some real arrogant rulers) we can dismiss the story as an ancient drama.

However, humans are still humans — and arrogant display of wealth during times of great stress in a country’s history — PISSES the hell out of the “little people”. And when the arrogant leader falls it will be the little people who cheer and laugh at the hyper inflated Narcissist.

Will the American people fall for the next Narcissist who comes along? Oh Probably — humans are so damned stupid — even with a written history they keep falling for similar fools time after time after time.

O, Come Let Us Adore Him . . . NOT

Comment by cynic | 2008-11-20 17:12:56

If the mainstream media really sold America a bill of goods for president, maybe we should rethink the virtues of the free market economy?

Seriously though… I have hopes for Barack Obama. This is an attitude I don’t believe to be totally unrealistic, but it’s also an attitude I’ve chosen to adopt. I’ve chosen that attitude for good reasons.

Given the current state of affairs in America, lack of hope almost guarantees a state of psychological depression. Depression is worse than useless. Our current economic instability reflects the fluctuations of our current collective state of mind as much as anything else. The gyrations of the stock market are the moving needle of a national confidence meter. What else? We still have our creativity. Our means of production are still there. Our desire to purchase the items we produce is still there. The resources are still there. The stores are still there…

Since we can’t really know for a fact how Obama will perform yet, our widely varying expectations may only depend upon which line of campaign advertising we bought in to: the unrealistically optimistic, or the unrealistically dismal. The actual results of his election are going to depend both upon Barack Obama and upon our own expectations. If we collectively decide to expect failure and a downward spiral, those expectations will help bring that very thing about.

Comment by jdona | 2008-11-20 18:03:13

I disagree with you cynic. Failure of the Obama adminstration and the downward spiral won’t happen because we expect it to, it will happen because he is a novice who is in over his head and doesn’t know what in the hell to do now that he has the title. We expect it to happen because WE KNEW from his lack of a record or accomplishments and his foot-in-mouth disease that he was a novice, was in over his head, and he was incompetent. I expect nothing from Obama. I have no hope at all this man can even find his way from the bedroom to the kitchen in the White House without a guide dog. It isn’t that I hope he fails, I know he is going to fail, I feel a sense of certainty about that that I can’t lay to rest. Any hope I had for this country died when Hillary Clinton was denied the victory that she had earned. I don’t believe this election was about rescuing this country at all. This election was a power play by the DNC, and the country be damned. Well they won. They are in power. And if the prospect of a Reid/Pelosi/Dean/Brazille/Obama alliance doesn’t scare the hell out of you, then I’d like to have some of whatever you are taking for the next 4 years, cause that unholy alliance scares the hell out of me.

Getting back to Howard Kurtz’s article, when I first read it a day or so ago I was incensed. After all, HE did HIS fair share of fawning BEFORE the election, and now he only seems to be concerned with POST-election lunacy and excess. Where was his outrage when it counted? Why did he even bother writing this — to cover his a$$? To have something truthful on record at last?

He’s a self-styled media watchdog who didn’t start barking until the crime was long over. Thanks a lot Howie.
