You Got That Right, Dee Dee

Yes, this is dated insofar as the election had not yet happened when this speech was given, but much of what Dee Dee Myers has to say is quite relevant today. As Senator Clinton is “vetted” (just spare me already about the whole vetting thing. I have one word to say about this: Daschle), she continues to be held to a different standard than men are. If we learned anything this year (and we should have, because it was blatantly obvious), misogyny was simmering just below the surface. It is not simmering any longer. It has boiled over. And continues to do so.
Here’s what Dee Dee Myers had to say about the primary season and expectations for men v. women:
As Bud White had in his excellent piece, “The Sexism Continues,” when a sitting US Senator is dismissed by major cable networks by headlines like, “(Persident) Clinton To Help Wife Get Job” as MSNBC had, there is no longer even an attempt to disguise it. This woman has more accomplishments in a year than many people do their entire lives, and certainly has more than the President (S)Elect, but her husband is going to help her get a job? She already HAS one, you misogynistic MSNBC *&@#$#! You can just bite me. This woman was a star even before she met Bill Clinton, thank you so much, or did you forget she was the first student EVER to give the address at Wellesley for her graduating class?? (Oh - and here’s a little heads up - you actually KNOW something about what SHE did in college. How about your man crush, Obama? What the hell do you know about his time at Occidental or Columbia, huh??? Tools.) Her husband is going to help her get a job? Please.

Dee Dee Myers hasn’t one ounce of credibility with me anymore. She was the person who the Clinton people went to with their petty criticisms against Bill during the primary, and SHE is the one who gave her husband the dirt to publish that false and pathetic Vanity Fair article claiming the staff traveling with Bill were worried he was having affairs while on the road.
She’s got nothing left to say that I care to listen to.

The picture of Hillary makes me very sad that she is not our President. My God, she has all of the qualities of a great leader. I just want to flash forward to 2012 and see her as President of the United States. I don’t know if the msm has a conscience about what they have done to Clinton (and Palin) but I hope they live to regret every bit of misogynistic smears they threw at these wonderful, accomplished leaders.
I don’t think chauvanistic and sexist men will vote for a 64 year old woman. Even Sarah Palin will be 48 then. It’s like women actresses. Around 40 they stop getting the callbacks. I wish society would get over it’s ageism and sexism.
i really don’t think it’s men against women, per se; it’s dumb-asses against intelligent, principled people. look how many women joined in the free-for-all against hillary and palin, and OTOH look how many men supported them. i will say that this sexist shit needs to be called out, every time it is done; there must be consequences, or they will keep doing it.

Tom Daschle was a disaster as Senate Majority Leader and as Senate Minority Leader.
But that’s not my only point; my main point is that while Daschle had that high office, his wife was a CORPORATE LOBBYIST.
Mrs. Daschle is STILL a CORPORATE LOBBYIST.
How much vetting is SHE getting — or doesn’t her LOBBYING matter to Obama since Daschle supported Obama early on in the primaries?
Is this more of Obama’s version of “change” in Washington?

Precisely!! And Daschle was Bush’s lapdog, until his constituents threw him out. No doubt it is that kind of spinelessness Obama is rewarding to a man who has WHAT experience for HHS???

Rev Amy, almost nothing was said on msn about Daschle’s failure to deliver SD for Obama even though, according to them, he was sure to win because of Daschle’s support. I think they may not like him too much in his home state.
by the time the primaries got here to SD people had wised-up to barky’s snake oil sales job; plus, the primary here was a CLOSED primary; it was dems only, so there was no possibility of shennanigens being carried out by repugs/indies. unfortunately, the catastrophe of the last 8 years was too much for mccain/palin to overcome.
Daschle’s going to give more money to the HMO’s and pharmaceutical companies. Trips to the doctor are going to go from $20 to $40. Costs of medicince will go from $100 per month to $300 per month.
The doctors aren’t going to see any of it. All my fees from managed care and Medicare have declined year after year, as my costs have risen.
I think the blatant, biased sexism demonstrated by our major media and as fostered by the Obama campaign is more than just a reflection of attitudes among the population. It has become so absurd that I am now convinced there is a concerted effort by the big corporate owners to deliberately belittle and oppress women. I noted one AP article today that described Tom Daschle as a “former Senate leader” and Hillary Clinton as “a well-known Washington personality,” as though she were a social hostess. How obnoxious! AP once was known for its fact-checking and fair reporting. In recent months, it has truly lost all credibility. Everything I learned about ethics and bias in a top-notch journalism program has been utterly destroyed this year. Perhaps these people truly are trying to get women to riot. What despicable perpetrators they are!
This is precisely why I know Senator Clinton should turn down the SOS appointment: do not reward sexist hatred. She should not enable him. She should stay in the Senate and write great legislation with her name on it.

My heart belongs to Hillary! What a lady! Every time I go to MSNBC or CNN or even Fox which I tentatively went to a few times this past week since I cant imagine not watching TV for the next 4 years, every single time it took no more than a minute until there was some snide remark or and condecension against Hillary and I had to switch the channel before I threw up in my mouth. CAN.NOT.STAND.MSM.
I think Hillary should do SOS for two years and then become a SCOTUS. She’ll go down in history as the only woman to be First Lady, a Senator, SOS and SCOTUS. No one could ever top that.

As for the sexism, I knew it had never died, it’s just been simmering beneath the surface. I have always been resentful towards most men because of their arrogance and demeanor of superiority, the way they eyeball us, flirt with us….but let us say something serious at work, have an idea about something and we’re brushed off, told to go back to our desk and keep quiet and quit raising a fuss. I’m there with ya Hillary. But for the life of me I can’t imagine being SOS for that SOB after the way they treated her. It is not pouting to say “kiss my ass, I can do better.” If more women would say that to the men who treat them so awful and with such disrespect, they would straighten up. Here we go again with the lack of accountability.

the whole point of feminism was that women be judged on their individual merits. It was never a you can’t live without us movement. So no, Hillary won’t accept the job for your reasoning, work to excellence for your reasoning,or sum up a successful tour of duty with your reasoning.

Who is Dee Myers talking about she didn’t even support Hillary and her husband made terrible remarks about her so don’t make a lier of yourself Dee.I’ve come to the conclusion that women are there own worse enemies.
Hillary should play hardball with Ted Kennedy until she gets what she needs to direct universal health care through the Senate and then stay there and do that. SOS is not the place for her - for many of the reasons mentioned.
Obama is “entitled” to full “credit” for the mess that the next 4 years will bring, and Hillary’s best sticking with the people of NY — They’re a “boss” who has the good sense to appreciate the good work she can do for them — unlike Obama - the ultimate con artist.
Then, too, if all the lawsuits can somehow prove in the next couple weeks that BO’s ineligible to be POTUS, the DNC will have one more chance to substitute Hillary as the Pres. candidate for the electors to vote for on Dec. 15 and we can all go dance in the streets!! (see you in DC for HER inauguration!!)

I am so angry. We make comments here about whether or not Hillary should accept the position of Sec of State if offered not trusting her to make a wise decision even though we know she is wise and strong.
The media talking heads spend hours trying to find reasons she should not be offered the position and after years of being under a microscope and having every detail of her life and finances examined in minute and finding her life is an open book, are reduced to offering the most absurd, pathetic , convoluted arguments about her husband’s charity being a problem because he meets with people from other countries to solicit donations.
Or, he receives money for speeches from other countries and then he might cause problems (?) for Barack Obama never realizing they are admitting Obama isn’t strong enough to prevent a coup in his own presidency.
They have all admitted she is qualified and would be wonderful, but they are afraid she would overshadow the incompetent person they helped elect to the most powerful office in the world. Anyone who watched the debates must understand how inarticulate Richardson is and how lacking in charisma John Kerry is.
When Obama walked into the Oval Office for the first time last week, did he feel the weight of history and monstrous responsibility waiting for him in January? Why would he choose Hillary if he had no intention of following her advice? He must be scared or he would never consider a woman, especially Hillary.
Do women believe other women are capable enough to handle important jobs? Do we allow our husbands or boyfriends to undermine our respect for ourselves or convince us with subtle or not subtle words that our gender is somehow inferior? The media is simply reflecting what they know will be accepted when they tear women apart, mock their abilities and intelligence.
Thank you Amy, for continuing to bring this to the light of day. I hope you will never stop. It needs constant vigilance now more than ever. We have seen how easily this bigotry can be unleashed if it is accepted.
