Check out this story at Bloomberg.com, "Fed Refuses to Disclose Recipients of Two Trillion (update 1)" by Mark Pittman. I'm beginning to think this whole bailout is one big hose job. Why did they allow things to get so out of hand?

This is a good subject. I look forward to the show.

Invest in gold. If you can't afford gold, invest in beans and rice. That's what my grandparents always told me. It still makes me smile. They lived thru the depression, they were always worried about another one happening to their grandchildren. They were concerned that us pampered ones would not have the necessary survival skills.

Ahh, but we listened. I've got a pantry full of beans and rice. I did not refinance, I do not buy on credit. I've never forgotten their words and warnings about bubbles and government and banks and the bottom line.

Looking forward to the radio show tonight; we need some good "sense" so we can keep more of our "dollars" and make it through this Recession/"perish the thought" Depression. Noriel Rubini is excellent; I have heard him on Charlie Rose before. Haven't watched Charlie for a while due to the continuous "Kool-Aid" hang over at WHYY, (my local Philly Public TV station). Thanks for the video clip.

Rubini mentions "Zombie" banks; do we still have "Zombie" banks left in the system? Rubini (of course) didn't and probably couldn't mention any names in the clip; hopefully they are all gone. Also, the fiscal stimulus idea, e.g. funding jobs, infra-structure, green energy, etc. seems to be in the works with the "Office of the President Elect." We will see how that goes after January 20th; it would be great if Congress came back and passed some good legislation sooner (so we don’t end up with a case of too little too late).

The one important issue that Rubini mentions at the end of the clip which he considers paramount to avoiding a more severe Economic Depression/Recession is related to the "housing sector." Hillary supported a similar idea (and I believe McCain did too); Obama not so much. This Program involves implementing a previously successful effort (utilized during the Great Depression) buying up the bad loans which also assists homeowners since they don't loose their homes. The idea is a type of 'Home Owner Loan Corporation' that would take the bad loans out of the system and help homeowners as well as Wall Street (God forbid). This approach will allow the Housing Sector to recover. Rubini seems to believe that the Economy can not recover until the Housing Sector is stabilized. Now, if I remember correctly, Obama previously criticized doing something like this and hasn't seemed to come off that position.
One more rather strange occurrence, (at least I think so). The original 700/800+ Billion Dollars was asked for and given by Congress to buy up the bad loans and get these loans off the books and out of the system (this original idea was not so much focused on helping home owners like in the Great Depression) but at least there was a focus on getting the toxic loans bought up and "sanitized." It was even touted that the Taxpayers may even make $$$$$ because the loans actually had value. That premise for getting the billions of dollars in bail out money seems to have evaporated. Now our money is being given out to do….WHAT exactly??? One crazy thing I heard was that some banks wanted to use the money to buy other banks and that seemed to be okay with the powers that be. What a bonanza for some of these folks!!!

Anyway, I totally agree with Rubini something needs to be done to help the Housing Sector; similar to what was done during the Great Depression. I know this comment is rather long; sorry about that. See you tonight!!

I like what he's saying. It seems like a good strategy, although I do not know if that is enough to stop the crisis.

My biggest concern is this:

The money is already spent. That money for that $250,000 house has been lent out. So while you could have probably stopped this in 2006-07 by refinancing to $200,000, the probable reality is that with late payments and higher interests rates (from credit cards to auto loans), the person in that $250,000 home can now only afford $100,000-$150,000. With continued foreclosures, overall brankruptcies, and debt settlements out there, I don't think these lending institutions, nor the people who invest in them (domestic and foriegn), are willing to lose any more money.

This pumping of money into the financial markets to try and keep this thing afloat seems futile. While spending on projects like infrastructure is bound to help some, I don't see it as doing much. This type of work requires a decent amount of expertise, so while it looks like it's going to help the working man, it looks to me like it's going to those in a more specialized field. And last time I checked, alot of the people in pain do not work in construction or are unskilled. So how does that stimulate jobs? Even if it did stimulate jobs, how many new organizations and how much money would have to be spent to make sure 90% of the population remains working while much of the financial sector continues to collapse? See, it seems to me that this type of program, while well meaning, will cause massive government spending and just add on to our $10 trillion debt.

To sum up: Americans are in massive debt, the government is in massive debt and the institutions who lent out the debt can not collect. It just looks to me that the credit of our country is determined to drop, jobs will be lost, the dollar will shrink and no amount of government spending will stop it. The only thing that could slow/stop it, would be more consumer confidence, which is hard to do when you have no money.

The reality is that the world has written a check and it just bounced.

someone at the insurance company must have. I would switch insurance companies and report them to the Better Business Bureau. I would also find out who the supervisor is and threaten them with the BBB or else. Sometimes managers are no better than the employee.

Gee, nasuS, i can't wait to listen to LD's show tonight! I hope I can think of a good question. I am having some trouble with my auto insurance company reversing a charge to my checking account for a policy that belongs to some stranger. Huh.

Are they so hard up for cash that they're trying to rip off people like us? They shouldn't even have a record of the debit card # they used because they were to erase it after I opted to pay by a deduction from my checking account every month. So, who kept my debit card number, and then applied it to someone else's insurance?
