Howard Dean Finds Some Lung Power On Sexism – Nine Months Too Late
By Ani on November 24, 2008 at 10:36 AM in Barack Obama, Current Affairs, George Bush, Hillary Clinton, Howard Dean, John McCain, Sarah Palin, Sexism
At a Presidential Election Analysis forum at Smithsonian Associates, Howard Dean finally found some grit and an earnest attitude on the “untold story” of sexism in this presidential campaign. [H/T cameoanne at Partizane.com for offering up this video in her great post, Too Little, Too Late.] And she sure got the title right.
Now he chooses to lambaste sexism in the media? How convenient. When there’s not a damned thing we can do about it in this election. As if this kind of disgusting behavior wasn’t evident back in January? Watch the video at the 3:45 mark and listen to how effectively he speaks out about the sexism that Hillary Clinton endured, and later, Sarah Palin as well.
The hypocrisy is staggering. Where was his outrage when it counted? And as Dean himself correctly points out here, we are talking about electing a woman president and the panel leading the discussion is made up of five men. Diversity, anyone?
On a personal note, as a campaigner for Hillary, aside from making hundreds of get out the vote phone calls, I, like many others, were lobbying super delegates, canvassing, protesting media, calling my Senators and Congressman and, among other things, calling the DNC. I phoned, sent hard copy letters, emailed the DNC website and Howard Dean personally. In other words, I got in touch with that man every way I could think of about 30 times since March when I saw the writing on the wall.
I spoke with his rather snooty young assistant on a number of occasions. I begged her – you guys are supposed to be neutral. At least give both sides a fair chance. Dean came out on TV to complain about race baiting (when the only race baiting was coming from the Obama camp, frankly) but never said a word about sexism. This young woman had the nerve to deny Dean’s TV appearance to me. She basically said, Daddy likes them both the same, we are neutral, like Sweden.
Yeah.
Another young man at the DNC, with whom I spoke several times, was so obviously biased, I was tempted to tell him that he ought to remove his Obama button while he’s at work.
At the mugging that took place on May 31st in the RBC meeting in Florida, the bullet-sweating Dean, upon seeing what a mess he had created and how furious Hillary’s supporters were, made some cursory comment about the fact that there may have been some sexism in the campaign.
On another date, after the primary had been forcibly ended in June, he said he really never knew there was any sexism because “he didn’t watch cable television.”
Shame on him.
He didn’t need to restrict himself to cable, believe me – there was plenty happening on ABC, CBS, and NBC daily. The snickering and derisive coverage was endless. Never mind how many media types were screaming for Hillary to get out since the end of January when the race was basically a tie. Has any male candidate ever been treated so disrespectfully?
Howard Dean saying something now is the equivalent of complaining we shouldn’t falsely accuse women of being witches and burn them at the stake, after they have already died.
Wow, that Howard Dean surely is a progressive guy.
If he had stood on a soapbox about it and called the media out on the carpet, the public might have actually taken a second look. We wouldn’t want that, now would we?
No, there isn’t anything we can do about it now, except keep the issue front and center and keep making noise, although I am sure there are many who would rather we didn’t.
Both parties are guilty of this surely – they pick the candidate they want and do everything to tip the scales in that guy’s favor – look at the Bush/McCain situation in 2000. All our voting and campaigning and money raising must be just a technicality.
If so, I wish Howard would have sent all of us the memo.
Might have saved a lot of time and grief.

Fuck Howard Dean for what he did to my vote and our great Republic. He will burn in the hell of his own making. I don’t take kindly to having my vote made meaningless by criminals. I’m sure many others share my sentiment and I will never forget no matter how the historical revisionists lament and spin.
Ani, thank you for another great great article. You are right, this is sooooooo tooooo late.
But we already knew that, right?
Back when Dean was running his own ‘ride a bus for Dean’ and ’swarm Iowa’ campaign, his minions were predominantly well to do young white male students etc., and some women of the type who seem to be happy to fill the niche reserved for beings labeled ‘my gf.’ His entire approach to politics is obviously men-on-top, so this was probably just a pathetic attempt to have something that would enable him to get on top of the other men on the panel.
Dean is the type of artifact that should be securely locked in his place in history, whenever that was, and not allowed to play in the present.
Hillary whenever, wherever, asap!!
PUMA!!!
Dean not only made your vote, and my vote, meaningless, he tried to make women meaningless by allowing and condoning the sexism and misogyny. He thought he could sweep us (women) all under the rug (or throw us under The Pretender’s bus) and we’d shut up and go away. Someone must have reminded this a-hole that we’re still here, and we’re still pissed. But his condescending, patronizing attitude won’t cut it.
How dare he say “no one understood the agony women went through”? I’d say there were 18 million women and men who understood quite clearly. I think it’s more accurate to say that HE, and the DNC, and the MSM, and The Pretender and all his kool-aid drinkers, just didn’t give a flying rat’s ass.
He’s just trying to save his ass, that’s all. Too late, Howie baby, way too late. We’ll all remember how you contributed to the sexist, misogynist atrocities. And you WILL be held accountable, some day.
People who engage in evil will suffer for it. Its the nature of the universe. This has been known for thousands of years by some human beings, but people like Dean, Obama, Pelosi, the MSM and corporate “leaders” are just too “smart” and myopic, greedy and lustful of power to know this, until it bites them in the ass. Even then, they might not even realize their suffering was caused by their own actions and inaction. They will just stand their with mouths agape with a perplexed look on their faces.
The sexism, racism, ageism, misogyny, classism, elitism, homophobia and criminal behavior in this campaign was intolerable and unacceptable. We will never let them forget as their tainted stolen presidency has a price.
KARMA – a word that Dean, et. al. will come to know and fear. We’ve entered a time when karma is now instant, no more waiting for another lifetime.
John Lennon wrote it: “Instant Karma’s gonna get you, Gonna knock you right on the head”
And when it happens, and they just
I’ll be pleased to tell them all about karmic retribution.
I thought of using the common term, but then I wanted to appeal to the widest audience. Mind you, I use the term my self all the time. But I think there might be some hesitancy to consider the subject with that particular term with its overuse at times. I hope this makes sense. I am trying not to insult anyone which on this blog can be problematic at best.
Yeah, it makes sense. I guess I don’t worry so much about how people might receive the subject, seeing as how I’m sort of in that line of work and am used to people thinking I’m a bit wacko
but one does need to be conscious that emotions are running high around here and feelings can get hurt!
What line of work? I like the offbeat, no offense intended. Oh well on the feelings getting hurt. We will never stop that no matter how hard we try. All we can do is try and then move on. I see times people have a right to be upset with something that is said, and I also see many times people lash out with less than healthy motives at someone for saying something. I guess those acting out defines a troll pretty much. I try my best not to engage them. They are psychic vampires in my opinion.
I’m an Intuitive Consultant / Reiki Master-Teacher / Intuitive Tarot Teacher / Intuitive Life Coach
I see LOTS of psychic vampires in my work! Best not to engage with them, either here or in life, if possible.
I just try to express myself honestly here, and remain open to being shown new ways of seeing things (OIAF is good at that, eh!) and if someone does get upset, it’s usually because they’ve been triggered by something they just don’t want to see.
Dean, Pelosi, Reid, Brazile, The Pretender…all vampires in my opinion.
Oh cool. I am a layperson intuitive and empath.
The line of work your in will some day be validated by quantum mechanics. You are tapping into the extra-dimensional “bulk” or “multiverse” (that which contains this universe), just as particles of matter will soon be proven to do.
I thought your pizzas had that special something…..you’ve imbued them with the essence of consciousness
“multiverse” – I hadn’t heard that word before, but I love it. I’ll have to borrow it!
Yes, the multiverse is the theoretical construct which contains this and other universes and dimensions. It is also called the “bulk.” It appears the “creation” people think about is only one of an infinite number of creations. This does not preclude or include a “creator” necessarily. My best intuition is reality is part of a closed loop system. It has and always has been, which solves the problem of who created the creator. No offense to anyone’s closely held cherished beliefs intended. And my way of thinking does not preclude an “after life,” since our energy when when pass can not be destroyed. Its entirely possible we move on, albeit not in a form we could even comprehend.
Don’t mind my ramblings, I’m in that kind of a mood. Which is a good sign, not to be obsessing over things entirely out of my control like that jackass who stole the presidency.
Got the vampire vibe of Obama after his speech to the DNC in 2004. Then this was confirmed after I began hearing that basically Obama was an avid listener and seemed to agree with the people he was talking with, but none of them knew how he felt or what he believed, combined with his demonstration of power when he grabs people (on the arm or shoulder) when he talks with them.

Boy Donna Brazile is a MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON, taking charge of the RBC (we know that outcome) and the LGBT platform inclusion as seen in the first deposition tape. So, to what constituents does Donna Brazile answer to and why were the letters that were sent to the DNC not taken into consideration asking that she be removed after the RBC fiasco?!?
So many questions remain unanswered and I for one would have loved one question asked;had the DNC already determined who was to be the nominee for 2008?
In answer to your question, had the DNC determined who was to be the nominee for 2008 — I believe the answer is yes.
If you watch Nancy Pelosi’s many appearances on network talk shows, her bias was so obvious as to be glaring.
I would also like to know how far in advance the DNC booked the Convention Center in Denver (not Invesco Field) and decided to have their convention in late August. When would they ever have a convention so late? Was that common?
How fascinating that the date coincided with the 45th anniversary of MLK’s “I Have A Dream” Speech.
How fascinating that the date coincided with the 45th anniversary of MLK’s “I Have A Dream” Speech.-Ani
………………
For me the most fascinating part was that he referred to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as ‘the preacher’ and didn’t even mention Rosa Parks (in his nomination speech), but then that was to be expected during this misogynistic election. Women can make the most valiant of acts and be erased from history…and for me it was too telling that is was all about HIM!
Not only that, but SC Rep. James Clyburn got the DNC to front-load the SC primary so that a state with a large A-A voter registration could have a significant role in helping determine the nominee. Does anyone smell a rat that this was the Obama strategy all along?
In addition Clyburn managed to get one of the debates in SC on Monday, January 21st, **MLK’s Birthday** holiday, prior to the Sat. January 26th primary election! It was a week of non-stop celebration of MLK. The day of the debate there was a march to the capital in Columbia that included all the candidates honoring MLK. This would be the first primary that Obama would win. He got 90% of the A-A vote. John Edwards won this primary in 2004.
This was a huge turning point for Obama for obvious reasons, but the two major ones were 1) Bill Clinton describing Obama’s claims about his war votes as “the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever heard” when both Obama and Hillary had voted the same on the war once he was in the Senate. 2) Bill also talked about how Jesse Jackson had won the SC primary in 1984 and 1988.
Clyburn found the nearest microphone to begin the racial campaign against the Clintons threatening Bill if he didn’t stop playing the race card he would end his ‘neutral’ status and endorse “a” candidate. Clyburn’s partner-in-crime was Donna Brazile who used CNN that night to start her condescending outrage and how disappointed she was in President Clinton and would never again say a positive word about Hillary or Bill. This was all designed to keep A-A’s angry at the Clintons so they would not vote for Hillary.
Is it any wonder that Rep. Clyburn is in line for one of Obama’s cabinet appointments? What an outrage!!
Yes, we smell a rat, indeed.
You’ve summed this up very well. Just when I think I’ve calmed down, the upset starts all over again.
I can’t believe how naive I was to have expected better of the party I belonged to all my adult life.
How many Hillary supporters voted for McCain? Was it something like 9.8 million? If that is accurate, that is a lot of votes to give up in defense of the right to act out male privilege and misogyny in the political process!
Maybe somebody kicked him around a bit about this?
??
Hillary!!
PUMA!!!
What Galt said! Revisionist indeed.
Have to agree with you there. May he roast in endless shame for each and every one of his lying, hypocritical, mean spirited transgressions…and NOT concurrently.
Yes, Howard Dean is a day late, well several months late. And he’s a dollar short because he fails to place the blame where it belongs, on the Obama campaign and Obama. Obama is still failing to quash the current round of sexism and CDS.
However, it is rather nice, finally, to have something to show all those millions of deranged Obama followers who still maintain that there was no sexism at all in either the primary or the general campaigns.
Listen, folks, I am thrilled to hear this from Howard Dean. Yes, it is a little too late. But that is not the point. Dean has announced he will resign as chairman of the DNC, which is customary. But, I got the idea that he is not happy about something. Maybe he will be the one to write the tell-all book.
His wife, a physician, would obviously be a woman of his generation that he speaks of who was outraged at the sexism toward Hillary as well as the pain of not seeing her become the first woman president. He made it more believeable when he put party aside and included Sarah Palin. What this tells me is Nancy Pelosi was probably the ring leader for electing Obama. Perhaps it all got way out of hand in Dean’s mind. Further, the fact that he said this had all been swept under the rug and someone should be looking into it was stunning, if in fact, he was one of the culprits.
I think the main thing Dean wanted was a candidate who would use his 50-state strategy. Obama was the one who was willing to do that since he didn’t have a strategy or any ideas of how to run such a campaign. Pelosi handled the campaign part for him with the venture capitalist company that she secured to “be” his campaign. That’s why when people talk about his “brilliant” campaign I want to throw things.
We saw how Hillary had a gun to her head and no way to NOT wholeheartedly help get Obama elected. Dean possibly did too. I may be giving him too much credit, but I find it very curious that he was willing to be so outspoken when he wasn’t even called on to answer that question – he volunteered his very strong words. I say hallelujah! We need all the help we can get – even from this person that I have chewed up and spit out many times.
I kills me that I supported this asshole in 2003. Of course he would have been a better candidate than Kerry.
I hope Howie ends up back in VT doing some doctoring in a woman’s clinic.
only if those women have really good reflexes and spectacular aim!
NO NO NO!!! I thought you LIKED women???

I like this one better, I will not give another hit to the above video, I know I’ll be so mad that I want to kill my computer. Dean is finished, if he was any good he would’ve stayed in his profession and would become a good dr. No he was so lousy that he had to find another job… I hate him
new, you always hit the right note! Ditto. and them some.
)
best,
tig
I completely agree with you. I, too, am embarrassed to have supported Dean.
Howard who ???
Ani, this reminds me of closet homophobes (some republicans) who say that they are accept gays, and dont discriminate. But in their hearts, its totally the opposite. Dean got the man he wanted into the job, and now condescendingly lamblasts sexism. What a hypocrite!
Gee, thanks Howard! All those many appearances you made on CNN, MSNBC, etc. were obviously not the right time to talk about sexism. Now that the campaign is over, no one is paying attention AND you’re not even the DNC chair anymore appearing at some obscure panel is the PERFECT way to talk about sexism!
Dare we hope that next week you will tackle caucus irregularities on
Larry KingMeet the Presssome random forum no one will hear about? Thanks for your post — his many appearance on those stations also belies what he said about “never watching cable tv” — while he was in the green room, waiting to go on, surely he could see and hear the coverage and the attitude that was so prevalent. There is no way he could have missed the treatment Hillary received.
I would say I cannot believe Dean had the audacity to make such a comment in the first place — but I guess we saw plenty of audacity this campaign season.
Regarding the Green Room – I’ve been to the DNC in DC and they actually have a special set-up wherein DNC folk and Democrats can be remotely interviewed. I doubt that Dean was ever in a green room. That said, I find it hard to believe that even if he didn’t watch cable, that he would have missed the daily email news clips (and they are extensive) sent out to DNC staff. He knew.
If Dean gets a cabinet appt or any other appt that requires a senate confirmation, I hope someone gets a witness slot at the hearing to air these grievances. I think that would be an excellent platform to highlight Dean’s shenanigans at the DNC. The Dem senators won’t let that happen, but we can go through repub senators to get a witness slot.
What a delicious idea.
In the video above, he talks about the sexism being ’swept under the rug’ — he should know, he had the biggest broom.
Nothing’s changed. Who’s listening to him now? In what venues is he speaking out about sexism? On C-SPAN, a channel empties don’t watch?
Obama=Osama
Dean=Mullah Omar
DNC=Taliban
And their industry is based on (h)opium production.
Great comment!Remember when Howard Dean said he was from the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. Who knew he was actually from the Taliban wing of the Democratic Party.
The Born Conspiracy
By Ron Polarik, PhD
Dr. Polarik’s final report is the culmination of over four months of intensive, empirical research, the sole purpose of which has been to determine if the images and photographs posted on the Internet are true reproductions of a genuine document purported to be Obama’s original birth certificate.
In his report, Dr. Polarik provides conclusive and irrefutable evidence that the Certificate of Live Birth (COLB) image created and distributed by Obama’s campaign to the Daily Kos, Annenberg’s Factcheck, and the St. Petersburg Times, and Politifact, is, unquestionably, a false identification document.
Furthermore, there is conclusive and irrefutable evidence that the photos taken by Annenberg’s Factcheck, in collusion with the Obama campaign, are themselves, false identification documents, having been made from the same false identification document image, as well as from additional false identification documents created for the same purpose; namely, to proffer these false identification documents as true reproductions of a genuine, Hawaii-issued and certified, “Certification of Live Birth” document, and thereby, intentionally deceive the American public into believing that Barack Hussein Obama is a natural-born citizen of the United States, and thereby, fully qualified to become their President.
Sadly, mainstream media have totally ignored this inconvenient truth and are not even been willing to even look at this birth certificate issue. They are all still in-the-tank for Obama, but even more so now that he is in line to be President. They all bought into the lies and fraudulent documents proffered up as evidence on Obama’s qualifications. They have been too quick to label as “trash” or “garbage” any legitimate questions asked about Obama’s real birth certificate. Even high-ranking governmental officials in the state of Hawaii where Obama was allegedly born, won’t reveal what’s on Obama’s original birth certificate. All they have said is that they have it. They have not said (1) where Obama was born, (2) when Obama was born, or (3) even to whom Obama was born.
The answer to “What’s on Barack Obama’s real, original birth certificate” ranks right up there with some of the great mysteries of our time — and that is really hard to swallow. That a man, with a dubious background, has been elected to the highest office of the greatest superpower in the world without ever having to prove who he says he is! That is not “nutty,” that’s just plain insane!
With all that said, and without further ado, I present to you my final and complete report on Barack Obama’s bogus birth certificate, The Born Conspiracy.

Out of respect to Ani, and as NQ has asked repeatedly, please keep comments on topic. While we all understand the BC issue is important, it is not relevant to this topic. Thanks.
Its good to help out. Also point people to the nearest thread marked “Open.” Their comments are encouraged there.
Off topic. Please post in the Air Force One Open Thread.
Read Jake Tapper over on ABC today.
Again, “To little to late”!
Women need to seize this moment that Hillary and Sara have purchased with their “Grit”.
Their pain, their agony, is every woman’s victory.
EVERYONE! And I mean EVERYONE, knows that what was done to these two remarkable women and their supporters (PUMAs) was wrong.
This is the “Rosa Parks Moment” Of The Women’s Movement!
Seize it!
Use it!
Work it!
Catch the High Tide for Gender Liberation the way Martin and African Americans did for Civil Rights.
Call for a Woman’s Conferance this summer in Seneca Falls N.Y. with Hillary and Sarah as the Co Speakers.
Invite EVERYONE in and out of the Woman’s Movement.
Good Luck PUMAs
I like this idea, a lot.
Kal:
Who do you know?
Lets make it happen!
Hillary and Sarah are the Susan B and Elizabeth Katy of the Twenty First Century.
A Woman’s Rights Conference in 2008 at Seneca Falls is just what Woman’s Rights needs to kick this century into high gear.
I live in The Rochester region of Western New York.
I’ll do whatever I can to help get this off the ground, but first to last this must be done by and for Women.
The Finger Lakes, Rochester region is Ideal for this Conference and Seneca Falls is the “Cradle Of The Woman’s Rights Movement”.
Come on PUMAS, lets take these “Lemons” and make some “History”.
How can I help??
There is a website dedicated to this purpose:
http://www.seneca160.us/
There was a conference last July 19th re he Women’s Declaration of Sentiments. I am sure they would love your help to keep this going…
I was originally requested to write a piece in re Sexism in the media for the website launch and reposted the piece here last summer.
They did a great job with the conference.
Please check them out…
Ani:
Thanks!
I was there for some of it this summer.
I read your Article when Larry posted it on N.Q.
Really liked it!!
I want to see the PUMAS take this energy and turn defeat into Victory.
The intellect and Wit on this site is outstanding.
If Women can just sling shot off this moment, I’m convinced that they will dominate politics in this New Century.
This economic crisis is like a RESET on a video game.
Women MUST be in the room when the RESET is done.
The Summer Seneca Falls Conference needs the PUMAS and their energy to set and push an agenda By and For Women for the twenty First Century.
PUMAS are the shock troops that have faught the 2008 battles.
Obama is getting ready to “Recut The Pie”
Now, As in RIGHT Now, is the time to push your agenda.
Obama, Dean, The Media have a lot to be ashamed of.
Don’t let them off the hook.
Push them.
Demand and get consessions.
Faint hart never kick the shit out of arragant Knight.
I will do anything to help make this thimg happen.
Go For It Ani!
Screw the lemonaid.
Take these 2008 lemons and make History!
William,
Thank you so much for your post, your involvement and your encouragement.
We are not stopping or giving up. I never thought I’d find myself on this particular path, but I am not letting it go. I trust others have been likewise awakened and will also keep working this [positive] agenda.
Nobody was a bigger cheer leader for obama than halperin [tpm is just a small time clown show so they don't count]. He took the meaning of ‘mediawhore’ to a new level. His comments are so outragous, so incredible it is beyond belief. Really I can’t believe it but there it is. If they didn’t exist they couldn’t be made up.
lol
Thank you for drawing our attention to this –
however did you notice how in today’s Political Punch, Mark Halperin is decrying the very biased “Pro-Obama” coverage and how the media failed to do its job this election season, but you notice neither Tapper or Halperin even mention Hillary Clinton.
They talk about the general election, and Cindy vs. Michelle, Obama v. McCain but nothing about Hillary in the primary. It’s like it never happened.
Halperin doesn’t mention the disgusting treatment Palin received either.
Oh, these hypocrites are amazing.
For me the PRESS DIED 2008.
There is no excuse for the level on incompetence and the biased coverage, so biased they openly professed their love/admiration for Obama. Will our media recover, will they question anything he does, I think not, they are not beholding to prove themselves right.
Ani,
This cartoon over at PUMApac says it all:
http://pumapac.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/mediabias.jpg
Thanks, Woman Voter,
That is a fabulous cartoon. Most accurate, too.
Make a movie depicting the vileness and make it stick in peoples memories.
I couldn’t agree more with Jake Tapper. We have to be careful that negativity does not take over and we lose sight of the “ball”. We have our work cut out for us. Women look very powerless right now. This must change because we do have power. It just has to be harnessed.
Fuck.Howard.Dean.
Big time!
Here are some of Dean’s quotes. I just googled it, so most are probably from 2004. But still:
“Hypocrisy is a value that I think has been embraced by the Republican Party. We get lectured by people all day long about moral values by people who have their own moral shortcomings.”
“I hate Republicans and everything they stand for.”
“I will use whatever position I have in order to root out hypocrisy. Democrats have strong moral values. Frankly, my moral values are offended by some of the things I hear on programs like “Rush Limbaugh,” and we don’t have to put up with that.”
“Real Democrats don’t make promises they can’t keep.”
“The way we’re going to win elections in this country is not to become Republican lite. The way we’re going to win elections in this country is to stand up for what we believe in.”
“This is a struggle of good and evil. And we’re the good.”
I basically felt the same and would have agreed with him before Obama & the DNC started their shit.
I think it safe to say the beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing axiom applies.
Thats just the kind of comment that makes Howard Dean Howard Dean.
“I hate Republicans and everything they stand for.”
Everything? Really? Can I get a list? Is “strong national defense” on the list? If so does Mr. Dean hate national defense? How about “mom’s apple pie”? Sounds republican to me. He hate that too? And how about more dangling prepositions? Can I get those too?
Since Mr. Dean has discovered sexism in politics, maybe he can go on to some others. He can discover that ice is actually water in solid form next. After that he can inform us that the earth revolves around the sun.
the guy with this mentality is a ganger to our country and he is the chair of the Dem…
God helps us all
the guy with this mentality is a Danger to our country and he is the chair of the Dem…
God helps us all
Dean’s comments about hating Republicans is one of the reasons I began to be suspicious of Dean. How can you hate people and everything they stand for?
What a bloody hypocrite!
For the record, this was a quote within a quote taken entirely out of context. He was speaking about people who feel this way. Dean grew up in a Republican household.

Howard Dean has now decided to talk about sexism in the 2008 campaign. He says it is the most under-covered story of the campaign. Under-covered story by whom, Howard? Here at No Quarter we were writing about it all day, everyday.
Women are over 50% of the population. Yet we continue to be treated like crap. Just yesterday at Huffington Post a commenter stated that Secretary of State is “a man’s job”.
When will we women start to do something about sexism in our everyday lives? I see how my grandson is treated differently than my granddaughters. So the cycle of sexism is continued. Sexism is such a pervasive part of our society that many people don’t recognize it when it is right in front of their noses.
“In politics, if you want anything said, ask a man; if you want anything done, ask a woman.”
Margaret Thatcher
Amen!
You hit the nail spot on! Women are the work horses of society and often beaten for not working hard enough.
Many things about Thatcher I didn’t like, but this remark shows she had a steel pair of OVARIES!
Another sexist remark from a militant fem. As a man, I resent your insulting, callous referral to my private parts.
So what didn’t you like about Maggie? The fact that she asked everyone to get their lazy asses out of bed and find a job? The fact that she was fiercely nationalistic? The fact that she much admired Ronal Reagan? You should be right at home with your POS Obama. He’s the antithesis of Maggie Thatcher, and I do believe Meeshell owns his pair. The latter should make you feel proud of your sex!
MSM is the modern day version of McCarthyism and Dean, Obama, Pelosi are its leading aiders and enablers. Obama even abetted it. Sickening, truly disgusting.
For 40 long years I have voted for the Democrats. But not in this round, and Never Again for the Party label. Only for the best candidate in my sole judgement, Hillarys and Palins preferred whenever possible.

[...] Howard Dean Finds Some Lung Power On Sexism – Nine Months Too Late At a Presidential Election Analysis forum at Smithsonian Associates, Howard Dean finally found some grit and an earnest attitude on the “untold story” of sexism in this presidential campaign. [H/T cameoanne at Partizane.com for offering up this video in her great post, Too Little, Too Late.] And she sure got the title right. Now he chooses to lambaste sexism in the media? How convenient. When there’s not a damned thing we can do about it in this election. As if this kind of disgusting behavior [...]
What a hypocrite this azzhole is…Howard Dean = Anti-Christ. He is one of the pigs personally responsible for what was done to Hillary. I hope he rots in hell.
Couldn’t have said it better!
I think he would burn up before he rots. Either way, sounds good to me.
Right On! No surrender!
F*ck off Howard!!!!!!!!!!! I am sitting here scratching my face with my middle finger, but don’t take it personally… Hee, Hee!!
That’s the Galt’s Pizza Parlor snark of the hour award winner!
I’ll beam you a large pepperoni pizza shortly!
Mangia! [Twists mustache, assuming I had one.]
been some time since I’ve been here, galt. save an extra-large pizza for me.
No problemo. One major advantage of my virtual pizzeria is I never run out of ingredients.
I think I saw you brush some lint off your shoulders too, Illinois_gal! But of course, it meant nothing right? Riiiiiiiight…….snicker snicker
WAY too little too late!
Sorry Howie, you lost me a long time ago.
Dean! Just like a blow-hard, a 3-dollar bill, when the fights over and all danger far removed, he pounds his faux-indignant chest.
Both women, who played key roles in this election, have more hair on their chest and a bigger pair. Get lost, you asshole!
actually, women’s greatness does not have to be expressed in terms of male-specific sexual characteristics
just saying
Gee, I’m eternally grateful for the sexist lesson.
No kidding huh?
no kidding. It’s way off. It’s done here lots but then they turn around and cry sexism.
Well, just trying to discuss the issue in terms sexists will understand.
But if you don’t like that — how about, these ladies have “Ova Deluxe”.
How about Hillary is such a courageous Goddess that the puny little pisher Dean should get on bended knee and offer his humble apologies for his atrocious behavior this year.
That better?
Uh, umm, I’m sorry I posted. Too many worthless PC potholes for me. My attempt at honoring these women somehow offended the idolators. I had enough. I’m outta here.
It’s amazing how these cockroaches are coming out now to tell us what we already knew–that the sexism during this election cycle was vile, coordinated and absolutely purposeful. Of course, “they” didn’t do it and take no personal responsibility. It just happened.
They can all stick their apologies where the sun don’t shine. As one woman, I have no intention of forgetting that the Democratic Party, presumably the champion of personal and civil rights, threw all that to the wind when it came to women this year. And then, pretended they knew nothing about it.
Until they got the desired result. Pul-e-e-ese!
Good article, Ani.
If the Republicans are guilty of the sexism too, give me some examples. Otherwise, I find that very hard to believe when the Republican candidate put a woman on his ticket for VP and the Republicans ABSOLUTELY LOVED HER. This one is at the doorstep of the Dem’s alone. And Howard Dean can JUST KISS MY ASS.
Perhaps his contention he didn’t know more about the sexism has less to do with his lack of attention to cable tv and more attention to seeing how far he could put his head up Obama’s ass.
How many of you laughed out loud when you heard and watched Howard Dean speaking so passionately about this “most underwritten story” of this campaign. Give me a break!
I find it hard to believe that he had no idea “because he doesn’t watch cable television”. I would think that in the position he was as leader of the DNC, that he would find it informative to see how his party is being perceived and that it would be informative to watch or scan all television, including cable and to scan all major newspapers, not just the ones you like. If not him personally, then to have those working under him to assist by reporting anything they read, hear or see that is not positive for the DNC and that would include the misogynistic treatment of Hillary Clinton by the media and by the leading male competitor for the DNC nomination for President.
He didn’t know what was going on at the RBC meeting in Florida? He didn’t hear about Hillary Clinton’s press release alleging caucus irregularities? He didn’t see how strange the Democratic convention appeared even to a non-Democrat like myself? He sure didn’t appear to have any concerns or cares about the historic nature of Hillary Clintons run for the presidency when he allowed the vote to take place that did. Can you imagine if it had been the other way around? If Hillary Clinton had been the party chosen and they pushed Obama to concede (for party unity) by not allowing a vote that reflected the true vote of the people to be reflected in the official records of the convention? I imagine there would have been outrage, and rightly so. Howard Dean should not be talking about all the wrongs that were perpetuated against Hillary Clinton and as he also mentions, Sarah Palin. Howard Dean should be apologizing about how he had an opportunity to show leadership and that he failed the women and men of the Democratic party, miserably.
if he is that out of touch with what is going on, he has no business being in any position of authority!!
He is a bald faced liar because I know for a fact that he was informed in grueling detail about the caucus “irregularities” in Texas and promised to look into it.
Nothing?
*crickets*
Howard Dean and “leadership” in the same sentence? HA!
We have a chronic problem in this country with lack of leadership!
Howard just reinforced it, and Obama will be shoving it right in front of all our faces!
To me after I left the Dem Party the day after the election, my emancipation day, I concluded their are two types of people — those who accept responsibility for themselves, and those who don’t.
Dean fits in the 2nd category to a tee.
Another brilliant post, Ani.
The winners write the history, they say. So how do we ensure that it’s know that Obama’s “victory” was purchased on the backs of women, that ecstatic sexism and misogyny were much in vogue with the ‘liberal’ elite, and Obama himself pushed the sexist narrative?
Thanks, Bud.
Keep shouting and writing and calling them out on the carpet. If the sexism rears its ugly head again, and it will, and it is, the vigilant need to jump on it immediately and let it be known this will not be tolerated.
We have seen the grass roots can accomplish a lot, especially with the advent of the internet — the movement just needs to be loud enough and fast enough and big enough.
We also have notoriously short memories in this country — I read many times in the blogosphere “we will remember in November” — we need to remember beyond that — the participants in the misogynistic slugfest need to be voted out. The media types boycotted.
I am not sure if it will have the desired effect, but only by raising awareness is there any shot at all. The younger generation doesn’t even think sexim exists, this while playing the tune “99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one.”
Hmmm.
Ani, this brings up my dream I had this weekend.
We PUMAs were doing “Women Walk all over Washington” and millions of women of all political stripes, with children in hand were there. We protested the sexism that pervaded this election, and vowed to never let it happen again, and never be silent again! Black women were empowered and vowed to never put a man over their own needs again. The media was just dumbstruck that millions of women outshone the “Million Men March”. It was the most beautiful summer day too!
Sounds like we need to make this dream a reality especially after watching that complete bullshitter Dean.
What a beautiful dream. Thanks for sharing it here. Here’s to making it a reality.
[...] More here [...]
Howard will end up surgeon general or an ambassador to his place of choosing.
surgeon general or ambassador? Thats too much of a responsibility for howie. offical dog-secretary sounds better.
Don’t wish him on the dogs. It is tough enough to get good health care for my pooch. He’d give good vets every where a bad name.
He can be ambassador to Iran. Then we’re sure to have a nuclear holocaust.
I need to quit googling Howard Dean images. There are some great ones out there. Check this out:

People who engage in evil will suffer for it. Its the nature of the universe.
And when it happens, and they just
stand their with mouths agape with a perplexed look on their faces….
may I add “you reap what you sow”…..
This was totally expected and expedient of Dean to remark on the sexism now. He has to ensure the Democrats remain the party of record for progressive issues of women’s rights, civil rights, and human rights. All that matters to him is that they speak of the issues, and do some meaningless study or initiative. They don’t have to accomplish anything on women’s rights, just keep talking about it as though they really care.
I really, really despise this man; he is the biggest reason I’m done with the Dem party.
Well stated. I am so disillusioned with the Democratic party and feel like I no longer have a home.
You make a great point.
Yep.
The (now) phony ass Democrat party will try to continue to pass themselves off as the party “for the people.” Try to continue to suck as much money as possible out of women Democrats while continuing to s— on them.
And at the taxpayers’ expense, of course.
Absolutely. Cheap, meaningless lip service and empty gestures.
Ultimately, it is up to women in that damn party to decide that they’re fed up with being treated like s— by their own. That they’re not going to allow themselves to be suckered and pimped by the Dem party anymore. Whether they supported Hillary Clinton or not still doesn’t change the fact that they were crapped on by sexist men in the Dem party.
One thing he said is true. Young women know nothing about struggling for equality. They are such tools and sex objects of men themselves they jumped right on the wagon for some smooth-talking black dude. Does the phrase Mean Girls ring a bell?
Dean knows he is repsonsible directly for his part in the misogynistic bias aimed at Clinton. How is he responsible? By being a coward, by having a position of power where he would have been heard(unlike many of us)if he had denounced the mainstream media’s attacks, ridicule, nightly jokes, and slurs against a very accomplished U.S.Senator. Also, he promoted an inexperienced sexist candidate in the place of a true leader. Now, in order to ease his conscience he makes this disgusting attempt to turn back the clock.Oh, he will reap what he has sown bigtime, all of the Humpty Dumptys will be falling off the wall. Standing by and doing NOTHING in the face of such prejudice is like seeing a crime and not reporting it or not doing anything to stop it. Bad karma is settling over these people.
thank you for the post Ani.
All PUMAs should flood Dean with phone calls, emails and letters, just like we did the delegates before RBC and the convention. We should tell im that we have heard he is finally concerned about sexism and we are thrilled. So much so that we are putting him as chairman of the women for fair politics and media committee and since he takes a while to come on oard with things such as these, we will just schedule all of his speaking engagements that we schedule. We’d hate to wait too long for this opportunity to be forgotten as the months go by and his assistants must be too busy. Then we should send him all over the country without pay, speaking on college campuses, work places, before legislators, in Odrama and Mechelle’s offices, anywhere. He can denounce sexism daily for no pay.
Let’s set up a schedule for Howard and send him campaigning for women this time!
And we should make him wear a clown suit ro something every day!
I like this suggestion!
Make him wear a clown suit while speaking out on sexism.
I just like the idea that he would be working without pay! Something I’ve mostly been doing for this party on election day for over 20 years, working without paid time off.
I didn’t think my opinion of Dean could fall any lower. It just did.
It’s way past time that the Howard Dean’s of the world give women the full RESPECT and HONOR they deserve.
http://ontheseventhday.wordpress.com/
Who cares about him? He’s on the “pay him no mind list” now that Obama doesn’t need him any more.
Ani — another great article!
Anyway Since Howie obviously lives in his own little bubble — the goal needs to be to confront him IN PUBLIC — where he is forced to sit and listen to his accusers.
If he gets one of the plum appointments in 0-zero’s disaster — I like the idea of going through the Republicans to get a witness slot for one of the many brilliant and well spoken PUMAs.
Whenever and wherever Howie goes — he should be ambushed by PUMA — letting him know that we know he is a liar.

Howard Dean says about Hillary:
FU Howard Dean and the horse you rode in on!
HILLARY DID WIN..you SOB cheater! Flash back to the RBC meeting..cheaters! Flash back to withholding Hillary’s votes from MI & FL. when Obama said he if he ‘won these states he would get a court order to have them counted’ but yet you helped him block these votes..stuff it!
Because you didn’t know what it would look like?
Well Howard Dean, it’s about time we SEE what it looks like by electing women to President and Vice President…and oh..how convenient to call Hillary Senator Clinton and then call Governor Sarah Palin just Sarah Palin.
You were for Obama all along and no OBOT ever thought you were for Hillary. LIAR!
Burn in hell bustard!
Tell the truth!
These Obama bastards have told themselves that “Hillary lost” lie so much that they actually believe that s—!
They’re EXACTLY LIKE the Bush bastards from 2000 – who had thoroughly convinced themselves that Bush won the election on his own. Absolutely NO difference between them and the Obamabrats!
Right — didn’t ‘win’ because HD etc. fixed it against her biiiiggg time!!
PUMA!!
I think the ONLY reason that he’s bringing this up now is that the 15% of women who DIDN’T vote for Obama have continued to be so vocal about the sexism in the media and in the Obama campaign, and the male PUMA’s, too. Note that these men talked about the fact that the “less educated” women were the women who “drove” Hillary’s campaign in the primary, but that those women overwhelmingly supported Obama in the general election. What either guy failed to mention is who are the 15% who pulled away? I think there is still the tendency by the media mand the DNC to dismiss it as racism, but I’m glad Dean at least brought up the fact of how stinging the misogyny was to many us, and he loosely made the link to Palin. Where he stopped short was to point out that many of the 15% who connected with Palin are educated women who saw the same injustice with Palin, and we believed in her ability to lead and were even willing to go to the leap of putting aside her political ideology, because many of us felt she was being upfront when she said she didn’t beleive in imposing her values on others, and she was there to do a job. At the same time, because we are well informed, and well-read, we found flaws and hypocrisy in the Obama campaign that kept us from going into the fold, unlike those who put party unity first.
I do agree that what Dean said is too little too late. The media got away with acting like this and they got the President they wanted for the next four years. I don’t believe for a moment that Dean wasn’t in the tank for Obama. The entire reason behind the unfair DNC sanctions was the level the playing field for Obama. Otherwise, Dean would have opted to impose the same penalty that the Republicans imposed on Florida and Michigan and that was counting half the delegates. Even with winning half of Florida and Michigan, we know the outcome for Hillary would have been much different.
It’s going to be a long time before I get over the sting of this campaign. A very long time.
Yep — that is exactly true of Mi and FL — they were not allowed to give those states the death penality — only 50% according to their own ‘rulz’.
4 other states moved their primaries up — 3 beyond the legal limit with no penalty — gee — wonder why — demographics that favored “the One”. Remember they thought he was gonna win NH — him losing their was not part of the plan.
Dean was totally in the tank for Obama. Tha was very clear to anyone who had any contact with the DNC or listened to the message they or the rest of the Dem head honcho backstabbers were spewing.
Hillary voters were educated. Obama started a rumor that his voters were educated and not Hillary’s.
It was more of the same projecting and skewing of perception in order to win. Have you seen Obama voters? Sure you have. Zombies! They are here on earth taking up space and leeching off others including parents.
Disgusting!

Oh wow. Thanks, Howard. Where the hell were you in February?
Oh, right. Eatin’ free lunch on the Hopey Changey Bus.
OK, he should have said all this when it meant something, but I’m glad he finally grew a pair and and didn’t mince words in his reparation.
At the very least we have a link for the next troll who says there was no sexism in the campaign.
“just words”
Howard Dean can go f— himself with a rusty, diseased nail.
So can the rest of the scum in Obama’s corner who crapped all over women this year.
Howard (the scream) Dean is the worst politician I have ever seen. Dean hates women!
I am a recovering Deaniac who voted for McCain-Palin. Since 2003 I have watched a good man turn bad, like a B-movie. Howard was my hero in 2003, very ethical, very courageous. The real deal. Not an empty suit. He was one of the first to stand up against the war. If he had a proper campaign manager, not that smelly, good-for-nothing opportunist Trippi, he might have made it farther. They should have responded to that silly scream thing faster, or maybe at all. Was the media behind it? Was Hillary, who wanted her time in 2008? I don’t know. He had the crowds and the momentum in 2003. But he lost it all. Al Gore told him he had to suck it up for the “love of country,” and work for the democratic party. I think people go nuts and lose their way. I think maybe he got blinded by his bitterness toward Hillary, and worked to get BO in to spite her. Who knows? He fought Rahm, and the Clintons, Reid, Pelosi for his 50-state strategy. Which ACORN appreciated I’m sure. He got his guy elected, or selected, and probably doesn’t even know what “his guy” is all about. And he did ALOT of damage along the way. Now when he’s on CSPAN I yell at him to shut up. I just hope he takes a decade or two to think about what he’s done.
What a lying piece of scum Howard Dean is. To even touch on this subject NOW after he himself participated in the destruction of Hillary through his silence and the silence of the rest of the DNC cronies is an outrage. He makes me cringe and he needs to be FIRED along with Brazille. Both of them, with the help of Kerry, Kennedy, Richardson, Reid and others too numerous to mention — stole the election for the anointed one. I, for one, will never forget or forgive them for what they did. His words NOW after the fact just make him even more despicable (if that’s possible).
Howard Dean not only stood by and watched but he enjoyed every second of it, the sack of shit. The only good thing about having him involved with the party is that he isn’t practicing medicine on women. I never liked him and, while I was glad he wasn’t the candidate in 2004, it doesn’t compare to how esstatic I am today that he is not the President of the USA.
Howard Hypocrite Dean. I am still thoroughly disgusted and his smokescreen of pretend indignation is added insult in that video.
Screw Howard Dean, trying to act impartial now and sympathetic to Hillary. He was the most sexist of them all.
Dean is so full of SHIT! He only blames Washington, but women of his own age were telling him how upset they were? Yeah, Dean probably because they remember the stories from their grandmothers of Black men getting the right to vote before women did, and how women were used as the reason for the KKK forming! Surprisingly, One morsel of truth came from his mouth: “We haven’t gotten past this stuff.” They sure haven’t gotten past this stuff — their own bloody sexism.
And what about the rep from “Emily’s List”? He didn’t realize how important a woman for POTUS would be for women?
What a LIAR! HIS WHOLE ORG IS DEDICATED TO GETTING WOMEN ELECTED!!!!!
I’m thrilled that I’m done with all of them — The Dems, NOW, PP, NARAL, Emily’s List… ALL OF THEM
that is WHITE WOMEN were the excuse for the formation of the KKK
Since Hillary isn’t going away and will be front and center as SoS, I suppose Howard feels compelled to offer some sort of left-handed apology. YOU go away, Howie, and take Brazile-Nut with you! It looks like your messiah is morphing into a run-of-the-mill wonk, so “progressives” like you two will no longer be needed.
From my blog:
Presidential Wannabees Shove Obama Down Our Throat
Ok, Obama has now selected most of his cabinet and it is clear that his administration is going to be Hillary’s administration without Madame President running the ship of state.
So, why not just let Hillary get elected?
Because the old white man Presidential wannabees just couldn’t stomach the thought of a woman getting something they could not have. Who could they be? Kennedy, Kerry, Richardson , Gore, Dean. They all had aspirations to be POTUS; none succeeded.
So they conveniently found a young AA guy (being even partly AA definitely gave him the winning edge) to shove down our throats. I hope you find this just as disgusting and revolting as I do.
Isn’t it about time we had term limits on the Senate and House? I am sick and tired of these guys year after year. Pretty soon they think they run the country; heck, they think they are the country. I mean, we are living in an oligarchy. I heard Teddy K wanted sweet Caroline, who has never been anything but a debutante rich housewife, appointed to fill Hill’s seat if she accepts SOS. I guess being a woman is ok if your last name is Kennedy (and, my dears, from the right class). I used to respect this guy, but after his performance this past year, I would like to see a replacement. And, old horse face is getting pretty tiring too. What the heck is wrong with the people of Massachusetts ?
So, it is all so clear. No hopey changey. No passing the torch to a new generation, as Teddy so wonderfully proclaimed upon his endorsement of Obama. It was all just a tactic to keep a testosterone laced finger on the nuclear bomb button. And to keep us uppity women in our place.
That is really sick.
http://helpmejoseph.typepad.com/puma_for_life/
Howard Dean is SCUM! How dare he talk about sexism at this point. The DNC really thinks women are stupid lowlifes. Keep it up Howie, someday you may wake up and get a clue but at this point you truly are a vicious insensitive pig.
As Former SOS Albright said:
You can blame Dean and rightfully so but if women represent 51% of the population then they could have the candidate of thier choice.
Just when I thought I couldn’t hate Howie more…he goes and proves me wrong and another wave of hatred rolls across me. Too little, too late, too inane, too redundant, too disrespectful, too sad. Howie is to politics and timely response what the Edsel was to car-manufacturing and advertising.
If he were any more useless he would be a potted plant.
I wrote so many emails calling for his resignation my fingers ached.
I have never been more disgusted by a human before and somehow I doubt I ever will be again.
The only close second I can think of is Dear Sweet Donna….another useless piece of flotsam in this election years lineup.
I find the whole DNC RBC one of the most horrid things I have ever had the misfortune to witness….and on my birthday, no less. I could rant for days about Howie and his blinders. I have already many times over. He personifies all things wrong with politicians and ‘the process’.
I hate him and now all I want for Christmas is a dart board with his fat, ugly face on it.
[...] Insufferable Howard Dean – The Regressive Posted on November 25, 2008 by Uppity Woman I couldn’t resist a cross-post from No Quarter. [...]
Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!
I let everyone I know I will never forget what was done by the media to humiliate both of the women running for the highest offices in our land this political season. There are those who want us to forget the images the media presented of both these accomplished women- Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. For months they did everything they could to portray these women in the worst possible ways a woman could be perceived and the DNC did nothing. In Hillary’s case- they did EVERYTHING humanly possibly through their reporting in the press and on the air to make the public see her as a controlling bitch. In Sarah’s case- once they knew she was McCain’s VP nominee- they started the full court press to make her out as the dumb sexpot broad. Neither is correct but the public would never know it listening to CNN, MSNBC, The View, Saturday Nite LIve, NBC, CBS, and ABC to name a few. Starting with Oprah, who I am sure has alot of pull in the media, Obama was made out to be the nice guy- agreeable and Mr.All-Around Good Guy. The media in this nation is as much if not more of an embarrassment to our country as Bush, Cheney, the fat cats on Wall Street and all the other immoral and greedy CEOS of our country. Howard Dean is shameless and wants the women who know what he did to shame Hillary to now forgive him- but in my case it will never happen. The ends does not justify the means Howard- never has and never will. The one good thing I can say that has come out of this political season is that my family now watches the news considerably less than it ever did and rarely for more than 5-10 minutes each nite to catch the most important headlines. We now read more, watch more family programming and have better family discussions. The tensions caused by the media spitting their talking head sarcasm and blatant bias that I am sure they learned somewhere in journalism 101 was unprofessional, into our living rooms is over forever and we don’t miss a minute of it.
Despite the challenges our country faces, I hope everyone can find some peace and joy this holiday season.
