Why Is Anyone Surprised By

This:

Obama’s speechwriter, Jon Favreau, demonstrating who he, and so many of those associated with Obama, is: a misogynistic, juvenile pig who has disrespected the Former First Lady of Arkansas, a Top 100 Attorneys in the United States TWICE, the former First Lady of the United States, a two term US Senator, the RIGHTFUL Democratic presidential nominee, and all women. As they say, a picture speaks a thousand words, and this tells us plenty.

In case that is not enough for you, there is this:

Or how about this:

Oh, we can’t forget this one:

Heck - they don’t have to be about Hillary. Here are some of Obama’s minions sporting their new misogynist-wear. And this is the milder one they were wearing:

No doubt, you know there are more out there about Clinton and Palin.

We don’t have to rely simply on a photo, though. We have video, too. This was from Geraldine Ferraro, who listed the incidences of sexism in the primary:

Gee, Ms. Ferraro, isn’t that PRECISELY what you did?? Immediately flip-flop over to Obama? Hell to the yes, you did, going on show afte rshow touting him as the Democratic nominee. I guess that DOES make you a “typical politician.” To say the very least.

Despite it all, despite all of the sexism, the MISOGYNY, Obama used, NOW threw women under the bus and endorsed him. Planned Parenthood did the same. Then there was NARAL, who threw women under the bus by endorsing Obama, which completely pissed off the folks at Emily’s List. And what did EMILY’S LIST do? Well, it, too, threw women under the bus. Why? To get money, to get on the bandwagon, to show that NOT ONE of those organizations truly have women’s best interests at heart. Apparently, for Emily List’s Director, Ellen Moran, it was to benefit her PERSONALLY since she will now be working as the White House Communications Director. Way to fulfill your mission statements, folks. Way to stand up for women.

And the piece de resistance, the video below. While this focuses on the Primary, it easily speaks to what is happening today:

A picture speaks a thousand words. And the response of Obama to the future White House Speechwriter’s blatant sexism? To the blatant sexism and misogyny in this election? Well, from Obama, the silence is deafening.

As long as Favreau has a job in Obama’s Administration, the message remains clear. Obama’s speechwriter can insult and degrade the future Secretary of State, and other women, and that is A-Okay by Obama. Obama could have half of his entire cabinet be women, but the message to women remains clear.

If Favreau is fired, will the fountain of Hopey-Changey rhetoric dry up? Hardly. There are freshman English classes all over the country that can provide a replacement with sufficient talent to string together these tired platitudes. Throw him under the bus, O. He really won’t be missed.

Comment by Paris | 2008-12-08 14:05:29

Yeah, I agree, though I find his action despicable, he’s not a talent, why treat him as if he matters, when this is the best he can do, molest a cardboard cut-out ?

(But then, like that canned slop that he would call a speech, I suppose cardboard, and make believe, are overiding themes in his life, never really getting anywhere near the genuine. And by god, I do have to wonder about his relationship with his mother, that he would “molest” a woman over sixty.)

I hadn’t even heard of him until the publicity (around this picture), his speeches never catching my attention, for all practical purposes he samples the work of other people, and calls it his own.

Comment by wodiej | 2008-12-08 14:11:11

I agree, a picture speaks a thousand words doesn’t it??

Comment by trixta | 2008-12-08 14:10:40

I totally agree, oowawa! Obama has been giving the same tired 2004 convention speech over and over again throughout this election year? (!) BORING! I suspect his inaugural speech will be just as banal and
“platitudinous” (ha!).

Off topic — but my “snake” comment from a few days back was NOT in response to anything you posted! It was in response to the diary question concerning the qualifications of a Senator. My posting was literally pushed out of order, so my apologies for the confusion!

This should be posted everywhere. There should be discussions in schools about the messages it sends to our sons and daughters. The “silence is deafening”….how true, how shameful.

Comment by Woman Voter | 2008-12-08 18:50:01

I agree, misogyny/sexism can’t be swept under the rug, nor can we pretend that it didn’t happen and continue to pretend as there is no abating of the misogyny/sexism unleashed during this election cycle.

The attacks were AGAINST ALL WOMEN. Women of both parties were attacked (not for their policies but for being women) and the women organization’s stood silent. I worry about the ’status’ of women in this country and I worry for the next generation of women. Societies that respect women thrive, those that don’t fall into despair.

Comment by Ani | 2008-12-08 19:53:11

Yes, Amy. Thasnk you for posting this and reminding us of all the disgusting misogyny we had to witness and experience this oast year.

He should be fired. Whether he is a dime a dozen or a once in a lifetime talent or anything in between — P.E. Obama must send the message that thsi kind of behavior is not to be tolerated.

It is shocking how many women are so inured to sexism (because they’ve been dealing with it all their lives) that they just make it an acceptable part of their day and act like it is not happening; or downplay it. It is as if they do not realize that they, too, are being disrespected here.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2008-12-08 20:20:51

And that, Ani, has been one of the SAD parts of this whole election year. While I knew that women were sliding back into the whole “sex object” thing (really - slogans across their rear ends, as just one quick example), their PARTICIPATION in the sexism this year has been distressing…

I agree completely - Favreau needs to be fired. Now.

Thanks, Ani!

Comment by Ani | 2008-12-08 20:29:31

Oh, yes, how could we forget the slogans across the rear end! How elevating!

It really feels like a conspiracy from everyone to clothing manufacturers, style gurus, ad agencies — teenage girls dressing with breakfast, lunch and dinner hanging out with slogans like ’slut’ across their backside — and the girls play along because this is “cool”. Ask yourself who benefits by us raising a bunch of Barbies? Women certainly do not.

It is eminently possible to be feminine and sexually empowered and still be smart, educated and have dignity — writing ’slut’ across your own backside doesn’t really convey that message to me — what say you?

Comment by NoBamaNoWay | 2008-12-08 21:36:28

exactly, ani; they are inured to it; many have never known a world in which they weren’t facing this stuff 24/7. many are also overwhelmed by the magnitude and pervasiveness of the sexism; it seems impossible and futile to challenge it or try to change it.

personally, i don’t challenge every single instance of sexism i encounter (there are only so many hours in the day, right?), but what woman with an ounce of self-respect would date these guys, or voluntarily associate with them, or have one good word to say about them to their friends? if women would simply “boycott” these guys, so that they would never be able to find a decent girlfriend or female friend, that would go a long way toward changing their behavior. women who continue to associate with them and accept their contempt for women as if it was normal and acceptable, are basically enabling and perpetuating the misogyny.

Jon Favreau is the poster child of sexism and misogyny in Obama’s campaign and administration. This said, this picture needs to be used as a running HALL OF SHAME, whereby the most current misgoynist is inserted into the cut out (see The Confluence). This HALL OF SHAME needs to be running trope on all PUMA websites, in my view.

I do not believe someone who finds gang rape funny should enjoy a position in the White House. He must be fired.

And since when did Democrats engage in this type of behavior?

Comment by Kal | 2008-12-08 18:02:33

Well….

Remember when Teddy dropped all to go bail his nephew out of trouble re rape charges in Florida?

But then maybe Teddy could really relate to how his nephew felt, having been accused of harming a woman….

Comment by wowo | 2008-12-08 19:56:20

Tacitly? Do you even know what that word means?

What am I ‘tacitly’ approving of? Gang rape?

LOL

Or are you suggesting I’m ok with him putting his hand on a cardboard depiction of a breast covered by a pantsuit?

The later I’m not tacitly approving, I’m implicitly exclaiming my opinion that you people need to get over your hatred of our next President. Let him get on with hiring the best people for the job/s at hand.

That included Hillary btw.

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2008-12-08 20:38:15

Tacitly means you are silent about his actions, which in essesnce means you approve it. And by the way, English is my first language. Apparently yours is gobbledegook, spin, or just plain prevarication.

You do approve of his actions, don’t you bot? Tell us the truth.

now, if a republican or a hillary supporter stuck their foot forward and held a rag and a can of shoe polish by an obama cut-out, that would be a serious offense, clearly indicative of deep racial hatred.

Someday Obama’s girls are going to grow up and have to face boys like this, people who believe it is acceptable to treat girls this way. It’s not okay and by remaining silent, Obama is failing to lead, worse he’s giving this kind of behavior encouragment.

Comment by trixta | 2008-12-09 00:54:35

Noproblama, all patriarchies (secular and religious) are about radical male bonding, which has as its aim the exclusion of women. Furthermore, many patriarchies use the cudgels of “ancient culture and religion” as a way to dominate women and perpetuate gender bias. In a modern culture and nation state such as the US, patriarchy will find other ways (in addition to culture and religion) to exclude women and “keep them in their place.”

Sex between Clinton and Obama is really what’s being suggested here isn’t it?

?????

Here is what I and others are suggesting: Mr. Obama’s campaign and his supporters have enraged millions of Americans by statements and actions with misogynistic overtones and a general insensitivity to women’s issues. This latest picture involving his speechwriter Jon Favreau is an explicit and egregious example of this. If Mr. Obama would fire Mr. Favreau and explain that overt sexism of this sort will not be tolerated in his administration, that would be a first step in healing these wounds.

Comment by Paris | 2008-12-08 16:14:46

But we kind of knew that wouldn’t happen, based on his campaign, his hiring of Axelrod for a White House position, the permanent campaign of the incompetent executive, just like Bush, and Cheney.

He can’t govern, he can’t write and he hires people like jon — none too bright.

What else can he do, really, but half assed ops, he’s not intelligent…

I would expect more of this, whether it’s attacking women or gays, it’s sometimes used as a diversionary tactic, and I expect Obama’s group to flame the culture wars, just like Rove.

Mostly, though, I would watch the treasury coffers, or what’s left of them, Obama’s Rezko history speaks volumes.

Amy!

WOW!

Really great job of pulling this all together.

When I was a little boy and would do something my Grandmother disliked, she would turn to me and say:

“See the way you are”!

Your article really shows us “The way we are”.

Women have to use this to unite and bring the Woman’s Rights Movement into the New Century.

The torch has been passed in this 08 election to a new generation of Women like you.

I think that everything in your Article, as degrading as it is to Women, will ultimately unite you and make you stronger.

I am reassured that The Woman’s Rights Movement is in good hands.

Thanks!

Thank YOU for your comment, William L., and your call to action. I second that - we need to unite and stand up to the rampant sexism that has infiltrated our politics, our news sources, our classrooms, our youth.

We cannot let yet another instance of blatant sexism by the Obama camp to stand.

YES! We need to flop on the floor and throw a fit!

And blame everything that is bad on OBAMA, because, you know, he is a black muslim from Africa who hangs out w/ racists anti-American black ministers and terrorists! Oh, and he stole the election from Hillary!!

agreed that it is in poor taste, but it is kinda funny. we have some cardboard cutouts of dr. phil in my office and people have taken funny pictures of guys “making out” with him and posted them on a blog.

this picture just looks like kids acting like kids (probably after a few brews). what’s wrong with a little fun… why does everything have to be SO serious.

he should be reprimanded but I don’t think it’s a reflection of how he does his job nor should he be fired for it. he’s not the president elect, nor is Obama accountable for everything his staff/supporters say or do.

Comment by Paris | 2008-12-08 16:18:15

She’s a us senator, and his writing is prosaic, canned crap, stolen, or maybe “sampled” from people who can actually think.

But I can’t tell you how much fun it is to mock him…

Really, nothing we like better than a would be George Michael clone, unknown to himself, clueless and loudmouthed.

Comment by superGong | 2008-12-08 18:55:54

And you forgot…

Because OBAMA is a black muslim man from Africa, who is married to a black women!! He STOLE the election from Hillary!! SHE should be President! Not some black African muslim who HATES women.

to put this where others could see it was when he crossed the line, or got caught crossing the line.
It was in Very Poor Taste and sexist to do this much less photograph it, and then put it on a web site.
It actually shows his imaturity. I dont know about other people but i feel someone that immature should not be working that close to the President, and privy to the many things the President is privy to.
And yes this does reflect on Obama. Sorry to say but what his staffers do and say especially when it is related to the political agenda it reflects back on him. Hey it was Obama who employed him and Obama who pays him.

Comment by Poor Judgement | 2008-12-08 16:21:26

I forgot to add that since Obama is now the President-elect this also reflects on America.
I wonder how many people from other countries saw this and thought badly of America?
Remember whatever Obama and his people do is reflected back at America.

Comment by Paris | 2008-12-08 16:31:40

Right, that isn’t how you play on a world stage, esp as a new, unproven president, this as silly as that whole “office of President Elect thing.”

But then, they’re hardly sophisticated.

Isn’t Obama’s transition guy John Podesta?

He’s smart, I can’t imagine he would feel jon’s actions are politically astute.

This is already the second time Obama should have spoken up, and failed, the other was in regard to the Detroit fiasco (at least until this past weekend with his interview on MTP).

Hm.

Moonette, we’re talking about the chief speechwriter to the President of the United States here. This is the big leagues, and these folks cannot conduct themselves like fratboys with a My Space page where anything goes. O has got to disown this behavior, and fast. A firing is in order. And yes, Obama IS accountable. You know where the buck stops, right? No hiding from responsibility anymore.

Comment by jbjd | 2008-12-08 17:53:33

BO can no longer respond to this behavior “fast.” That ship has sailed.

He has issues with women, sexually.

Comment by bob | 2008-12-08 16:25:33

See, you just proved my point. You say on the one hand that it’s not about sex but sex-ism. On the other hand you say Bambi’s gay. So which is it? Is it about Bambi being gay and sexist or hetero and trying to make out with Hillary?

Comment by Paris | 2008-12-08 16:34:09

No, this was in reposne to your comment about Obama and Hillary, specifically.

“why does everything have to be so serious”
If that’s the way you feel the just watch Stewart, Colbert and Mahrer every day. That should make it easy for you–don’t come to a site that dares to expose the continuum of miosgyny that exists on a global scale. If women had never been maimed, abused, stoned, hung, burned at the stake, considered ‘property’ until the beginning of the 20th century in America and still considered as such in many other countries then maybe this would be just a adolescent joke. But local newspapers still continue to publish stories of spouses, ex-spouses, lovers, ex lovers that abuse and kill their significant others in domestic violence situations. And on cable BBC type channels you can witness stories of rape used as a war weapon, of genital mutilation, of honor killings. So you see it’s not harmless, it’s a tragedy that young men are raised to act like this in an educated country like ours. Wake up.

Comment by moonette | 2008-12-08 16:27:39

people in other countries that adopted progressive policies and attitudes years ago, probably just chuckle and then move on to something important.

Comment by Paris | 2008-12-08 16:41:18

Actually, no.

Obama’s technique is amateur, utilizing a simplistic divide and conquer, something, no doubt, the militaries of the world are wholly unfamiliar with — but Obama’s guys don’t see it, because, well they’re not really sophisticated, are they?

You know how people thought Bush was obtuse and unsophisticated in part because of his political technique?

Same with Obama, and it affects his abilty to make his decisions stick, intelligent Americans don’t hire obtuse speechwriters and staff, sorry.

They have to prove themselves just like everybody else, and they’re already being gamed, failing.

They dont get a pass because they’re American boys.

Kind of get it, he looks like moron, and drunken obtuse frat boys are disregarded.

Like Bush, he’ll be played and ignored.

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-12-08 17:25:01

Thank you Rev. Amy! (again)

For not letting this frat boy get away with his blatant sexism.

This is a serious subject —

the only way that these misogynistic males (and females) are ever going to change their behavior is to shake them awake — get their attention and then MAKE them see that their behavior is wrong.

In family therapy when one individual is on a destructive path something called an intervention is called — literally an intervention to prevent this person from self destruction. (For instance drug use by teenagers — heavy drinking — and let’s add misogyny.)

0bama needs some serious Intervention Therapy — not the hand holding he is getting from OLD, ancient feminist groups like NOW. His behavior is unacceptable — and the Tr0lls represent him with their behavior. Every time an 0bot troll shows up — they represent the ONE — and reaffirm my decision why I could not and will not ever vote for a sexist pig.

RRAmy For you, something to lighten the heart and know some men have a deep love and respect for women: this is a copy of Bobby MCFerrin’s version of the 23rd Psalm, not so far fetched, to have a mother and a father is it.

The 23rd Psalm [lyrics]
The Lord is my Shepard, I have all I need,
She makes me lie down in green meadows,
Beside the still waters, She will lead.

She restores my soul, She rights my wrongs,
She leads me in a path of good things,
And fills my heart with songs.

Even though I walk, through a dark and dreary land,
There is nothing that can shake me,
She has said She won’t forsake me,
I’m in her hand.

She sets a table before me, in the presence of my foes,
She anoints my head with oil,
And my cup overflows.

Surely, surely goodness and kindness will follow me,
All the days of my life,
And I will live in her house,
Forever, forever and ever.

Glory be to our Mother, and Daughter,
And to the Holy of Holies,
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
World, without end. Amen

can listen here(hopefully), I have had my own copy for years.

My apologies if the link doesn’t give a listen: It’s from his “Medicine MAn” album, 1991, this was his way to dedicate the 23rd Psalm to his mother. I think it’s beautiful.

Thanks, Katmoon! I appreciate that. McFerin is VERY talented…

And I know there are men who truly DO care abt this issue, and abt treating/SEEING women as equals.

Thanks again for thoughtful comments, folks! It helps to have people like you out there who get it!

RRRA, I have a secret fantasy I have had most of my life, in the tradition of Chrisitanity, that Jesus, has been amongst us for some time, as a woman(taking names I might add). It’s a story I write in my head and have put some to paper. The movie “Dogma” hit on it, a bit. The reason I am applying this aspect to the discussion, I feel there is a relationship on how the cultures the world over have adopted beliefs that do not involve a female creator. Seems (per Joseph Campbell) the formation of many belief systems involve the female being left out of the creation myth, which also leaves her powerless; this was not by accident; and the residue carries over into our cultural lives beyond spirituality and religion.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2008-12-08 20:58:26

Hey, Katmoon -

I have been trying to recall the name of a book written by a medical doctor on the advent of language was the beginning of the demise of goddess worship. It was REALLY interesting - unfortunately, I gave it to someone, and I cannot remember the name. His premise was an interesting one on why it was that goddess worship, which had been predominant, has been almost wiped out (Wiccans and other Earth-based cultures practice it, as well as other world religions). If I think of the name, or can find it, I’ll let you know. It might help with the story you are writing in your head…I hope you get the whole thing out on paper. Would love to see it!

Hillary knows how to handle men who are obsessed with her (even if she says she doesn’t):

1. Her response to Favreau;
2. This response to Chris Matthews:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjsqDrdvIPw

But men don’t know how to handle women like Hillary. And I think they DO get obsessed.

The actual gang rape happened the night Tim Russert turned all the men on her in that debate. And the problem is that we did not stomp all over them sufficiently the next day.

They just announced today that they will be giving the “Pulitzer” for on line work.

I would like to nominate This piece of Amy’s for that First Online Pulitzer.

Amy’s fantastic work at pulling this all together gives you, the reader, an opportunity to look back and reflect on the bruising sexist battle that has taken place in 2008.

When you see it assembled in this way you begin to realize a couple of things that were lost as it played out in it’s drip, drip, twelve month process.

Because of Amy’s piece, I’m shocked at:

How pervasive Sexism is.

How easily it is excused and dismissed.

How unready the Woman’s movement was, and still is to deal with it.

How un-united the Woman’s movement is in combating it.

What a daily beating Hillary, Sara and their supporters like Mrs. Ferraro took.

How much respect I have for their incredible courage and determination to soldier on.

What an opportunity this work of Amy’s gives to the Woman’s Movement to come together and confront this common enemy.

What Amy has put together is the Ugly Face of Sexism.

Everything in Amy’s work happened in a twelve month period of 2008.

Those who perpetrated it, especially in the media, are the scum of society.

Those who were targeted and stood up to it are the real Heros and the giants of 2008.

What is not known is the Question left hanging over Amy’s work,

Where does the Woman’s movement go from here?

My humble suggestion would be:

A “Never Again” Convention In Seneca Falls N.Y. this summer with Hillary and Sara as Guest speakers.

Once again Amy, I’m blown away by to power of this piece and I hope you get an online Pulitzer for it.

Thanks Larry for posting it.
