Third Parties Negotiate with Blagojevich Using Jackson’s Name and new video of JJJ

Today’s Chicago Tribune has more on the activities of people who claim they were acting on behalf of Jesse Jackson, Jr with disgraced IL governor Rod Blagojevich. Even as Jackson denies involvement, some threads are unravelling.
Jackson has denied direct contact with Blagojevich about Obama’s senate seat and has denied sending any emissaries. This story, though, points to business contacts in common between Blagojevich and Jackson. Whether they were running their own private deal or our working on behalf of a specific party remains unknown.
As Gov. Rod Blagojevich was trying to pick Illinois’ next U.S. senator, businessmen with ties to both the governor and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. discussed raising at least $1 million for Blagojevich’s campaign as a way to encourage him to pick Jackson for the job, the Tribune has learned.

Blagojevich made an appearance at an Oct. 31 luncheon meeting at the India House restaurant in Schaumburg sponsored by Oak Brook businessman Raghuveer Nayak, a major Blagojevich supporter who also has fundraising and business ties to the Jackson family, according to several attendees and public records.Two businessmen who attended the meeting and spoke to the Tribune on the condition of anonymity said that Nayak and Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi privately told many of the more than two dozen attendees the fundraising effort was aimed at supporting Jackson’s bid for the Senate.

One said Nayak [a political and community leader in Chicago's Indian community who has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Blagojevich and $22,000 for Jackson] and Bedi [managing director for the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity's Office of Trade and Investment and referred to by Blagojevich as "My Sikh warrior"] told him and others of their plan to help Jackson.The second said he overheard Nayak and Bedi discussing plans with Bhatt, the Joliet pharmacist.
“Raghu said he needed to raise a million for Rod to make sure Jesse got the seat,” the second businessman said. “He said, ‘I can raise half of it, $500,000.’ The idea was that the other two would help raise the rest.”
Bhatt, whose two Basinger’s Pharmacy outlets were searched by the FBI last week, has been the focus of a state and federal investigations into whether campaign donations were made in exchange for regulatory favors.
Bhatt is a prominent Indian businessman who helped the state’s top pharmacy regulator win his job. The Tribune reported last year that state pharmacy auditors probing allegations of Medicaid fraud at Basinger’s complained that their bosses thwarted the investigation, allegations Bhatt has adamantly denied in interviews with the Tribune.
In addition to direct fundraising, both Nyak and Bedi tried to convince another Blagojevich fundraiser, Patel Babu, to “us his influence to get the governor to appoint Jesse Jackson to the Senate” according to another source at the Oct 31 meeting.
It’s beginning to look like some “concerned citizens” were doing their best to help convince Blagojevich to appoint Jackson or to broker a deal between the two. Maybe Jackson wasn’t willing to do direct fundraising on Blagojevich’s behalf, but some of his supporters were.
In the Sun-Times was a more general article rehashing information from the complaint. The complaint contained an assertion by Blagojevich that Senate Candidate 5 indirectly approached him with promises to raise funds for him if Candidate 5 were given Obama’s seat.
“In a recorded conversation on October 31, 2008, Rod Blagojevich described an earlier approach by an associate of Senate Candidate 5 as follows: ‘We were approached “pay to play.” That, you know, he’d raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him [Senate Candidate 5] a senator,’ ” the complaint states.
Some people have asserted that this was bombast on Blagojevich’s part, but remember what was in the Tribune?

Go and read the Chicago Tribune story. It’s very interesting and worth your time. Were these supporters acting on their own while throwing around Jackson’s name? Jackson insists that is the case. We will see.
The new narrative about Blagojevich is that he’s somehow unstable or given to grandiosity. He may be, but clearly he was also a man on a mission to secure his future. I think his words on that wiretap may have been more accurate than first reported.

Blag appears to me to have a drug use problem.
I wondered the same thing, jangles. He sounds and appears delusional with some of the statements he’s made. On the other hand, I think the Obama folks are in high defense mode to dump this guy overboard before the slime infiltrates the inner circle.
As far as Jesse Jackson, Jr.? I managed to catch his press statement and thought either he’s telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth or he should be nominated for the Academy Award. I mean, he even had the “choked up moment” when he talked about his sister calling and saying “how proud she was of him.”
I hope he’s telling the truth because if he isn’t that statement will nail him to the wall.
On the court order, how do you push a guy [Blago] out before he has his day in court? It all sounds pretty damning and if you’ve kept up with the investigative reports, Blago is “not” a sympathetic character. I frankly think he’s guilty as sin. But this is still a country of laws and unless they can prove the evidence in court or unless they have evidence of drug use, how do you “force” an elected official from office? Or are we suppose to applaud “tried in the court of public opinion.”
I’ll be honest, that in itself makes me queasy.
All this “diminished capacity” jargon seems far too convenient from parties who have played the Gov’s game or turned a blind eye in the past. And I sure as hell do not trust the media.

OK — now I’ve got it — the $$$ raised by JJJr was for da Gov’s RE-ELECTION campaign fund.
And it was to be raised by “others” — to keep JJJr’s hands clean.
Seems like this is a pattern — the higher up the feeding chain — means others are the fund raisers — and thus THEY expect pay backs — and JJJr would no doubt be expected to direct money back to his fund raisers.
So — the money that Obama sent BACK to Chicago was probably directly related to those who helped him.
There is no sense or even effort to direct Fed money to projects or programs that help or benefit ALL Chicago or even Illinois citizens.
Se WE taxpayers are paying for the operation of the Chicago machine politics.

It occurs to me that at least two powers could be behind this rush to get Blago out NOW: 1) Obama, because Blago did not cooperate with his plan to get Valerie Jarrett into his old senate seat, and 2) The National Black Caucus, because Blago did not cooperate in replacing Obama with another person of color.

If this mental capacity thing were coming from Blag’s defense lawyer, I’d be fine with it. But it sounds like all his machine friends now want to get him certified to save their own backs. I think that is beyond reprehensible. I vaguely recall hearing that powerful politicians in other countries (maybe russia, was it) did that sort of thing to silence witnesses to political abuses and corruption.
Surely Fitz can do better than this; surely this investigation, if it is going as deep as it supposedly is, can bypass the ‘lock them up is psych wards’ outcome. Surely the US is not really a dictatorship of the officeholders — yet.

I would not be surprised if JJ proposed a fine quid pro quo allegedly endorsed by That One. The thing is how JJ’s lawyer will prevent him from appearing in front of grand jury.

My theory is when the Obama Chicago people realized Blago was a loose cannon who was not happy with their demands and was posssibly going to carry through with his threat of appointing himself, they turned him in since they knew he was being investigated. They figured they could promote the idea he was off his rocker and anything he said would be discredited. In reality, it was Chicago Politics as usual. Yes, it was taking a chance, and perhaps they were on the verge of being ‘busted’ themselves, but regardless, Obama’s gang, particularly Emanuel, Obama, and Axelrod were going to decide this appointment.
Anyone who thinks they were sitting back letting the Governor use his rightful discretion on who HE thought was best for the job is exceedingly nieve. Although, that is precisely what Obama told the world just days ago. As John Kass from the Chicago Tribune said, “People thought this was camelot when in reality it was Chicago” in the worst sense of the word, I might add.
No question about it – the Insanity Defense is all the Chicago Machine has left to say to save its skin.
If they can convince people he is unhinged, no one will believe what he says. This idea has been expressed more than once in the last few days. That doesn’t seem to be a coincidence. Good article LisaB. The problem with trying to say that Blagoevich has diminished mental capacity or something similar, is that I doubt is will fly. People with mental illness can still distinguish between right and wrong. He is certainly not mentally challenged (low IQ), so he would have to be full-on psychotic. Blagojevich is merely a narcissist who feels entitled. Doesn’t that description sound familiar? He is probably pretty typical, as far as Chicago politics goes.
I just read that Fitz held off arresting Blagojevich until after the election so as not to ruin PEBO’s chances. Are you kidding me? I loved Fitz until I read that. Now, I am really, really pissed at him. He had the goods on Blagojevich since last June or something. If he had taken Blago down back then, I just know that Hillary would have been the nominee and now our president elect.
If that’s true, that sounds like inappropriate political influence over justice decisions right there. I think I just got bored with the whole thing. Nothing has changed since Watergate and before. What I find really amazing is that Obama continued to work closely with a Governor who was under investigation. He didn’t suddenly discover that Blago was dirty — he knew it all the time.
But then Obama continued to accept money from Rezko while he was under investigation too. So it must be a pattern with him. You can’t part the waters of a swamp. I can’t say I disagree, I don’t know about Blago, per se, but I would think, gievn the Rezko and HEAVY ME influence in Chicago politics, (even Indian and Pakistani, right?) the threat of violence has to be extraordinary, even extending to the russian mob, who, like Elvis, are apparently everywhere (a shoutout to Mojo Nixon, there).

The criminal complaint is in pdf, large print, double-spaced, easy to read. It contains only enough information needed to arrest the Gov. and Harris. What else will be revealed?
As I read the complaint what was astonishing to me is the ease in which Blago and cohorts spoke about what the President Elect could and would do to help them.
Quite obviously they were all connected, knew what could be expected even though there could not be an overt direct connection at that time.
They KNEW the President Elect would be available to cooperate with their wishes as soon as O. found a way to put some distance between himself and the deed.
After reading the complaint I don’t think Blago and friends had a clue they might be taped.
It is well worth reading to learn from participants themselves how we citizens have been duped by politicians and their elitist friends.
The electoral college meets Dec. 15. Obama has already been untruthful about meeting with Blago. Obama supported Blago politically. In the complaint Rezko is deeply involved with Blago in demanding bribes from contractors before they receive state funding. How can O. be close to Rezko and not be involved?
For some unknown reason the Ill. State Legislature has refused to reveal Obama’s voting records. Is O. connected to some of the Ill. political corruption?

I’ve read all kinds of theories from the one that Harris is a mole to that Blago is acting nuts to plead insanity at his trial. Whatever the outcome, whomever ends up with that seat and which people end up doing hard time, one thing is clear to me from the start – there is a trinity that had to go down.

Ex-Operative Says Jackson No ReformerCongressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has acknowledged that he is “Senate Candidate No. 5″ in the criminal complaint against Gov. Rod Blagojevich. But he says he’s not a pay-to-play politician.
But as CBS 2’s Derrick Blakley reports, not everyone agrees.
Throughout his career, Jackson Jr. has portrayed himself as a political reformer. But a one-time campaign associate paints a starkly different view of Jackson and his motivations.
Former city worker Frank Coconate was Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.’s Northwest Side point man when Jackson flirted with the idea of running against Mayor Daley.
Now, Coconate says, he’s not shocked by federal wiretaps in which Blagojevich discusses selling Barack Obama’s Senate seat to someone described as a Jackson emissary.
“He was always looking to deal,” Coconate said. “If he couldn’t get it outright, he’d buy it.”
In a 2005 meeting with a longtime Jackson aide, Coconate says, he was told Jackson only endorsed candidates who sent money Jackson’s way.
“He said, ‘We have a criteria before we support anybody,’” Coconate said. “`They have to have $50,000 to $10,000. They have to take our polls, which can cost $8,000 or $9,000 … and any endorsement with Jackson, you have to take a picture with him, which costs you.’”
In short, Jackson’s office was selling endorsements, Coconate said. He said the Jackson aide he dealt with is likely the one referred to in the Blagojevich case.
On Wednesday, Jackson denied any wrongdoing, and his attorney, James Montgomery, said someone may have been posing as Jackson’s aide.
“I wouldn’t put it beyond someone to be purporting to represent Jesse without authority,” the attorney said.
Coconate doubts that idea. He said the congressman knows anybody that’s using his name.
CBS 2 tried to contact the Jackson aide but was unable to reach him. The station is not using his name.
Coconate admits he’s bitter toward Jackson. The two had a falling out after Jackson backed out of the mayoral race.
The congressman returned to Chicago today and is scheduled to meet with the FBI tomorrow

Isn’t it amazing that Valerie Jarrett refused to work in the Obama administration so she could get his Illinois Senate seat, but because of the Blag mess, she has withdrawn her name and because Obama asked, will now take a job with The One!

I just read that Blago’s sudden mention that “the whole world is listening” was probably due to the fact that the Chicago newspaper was reporting the wiretapping on Dec. 4th(I think they said).
Anyway Jarrett just another Chicago player, who may end up with the Senate seat afterall.

That big cry-baby JJJr shouldn’t talk about Gov. Blago’s mental capacity when he clearly has issues himself.
Anyway, when you are caught red-handed with few options left, going crazy makes a lot of sense.
It reads just like typical Chicago corruption ie, guys like Daley always running for cover, except now it’s Obama in the White House, they dragged all their baggage from Chicago, to Washington.
John Kass is probably in a better position to handle the next four years than just about anyone.
When the Jackson/Blag connection was originally made, Tweety Matthews insisted that since HE KNEW Jesse Jr. personally, he could vouch that there was nothing to the rumor. Well I guess that even though Mr. Matthews may have gazed into the Rep’s eyes, he saw the wrong thing and perhaps he also would not make a very good Senator either.
It’s ironic that Jackson would get embroiled in this mess since apparently he didn’t really know Blag very well — probably just wanted the seat so bad that he couldn’t help himself.
Hopefully our courts can sort this out. The immediate fix would be talking Peter Fitzgerald to come out of retirement and take his old senate seat for the remainder of the current term. We can then have a scheduled election saving us a bundle on a special election. Just think he might appoint an assistant prosecuter to understudy with Patrick Fitzgerald. It is slim, but there is still hope for cleaning up our state.
