Eleven

(bumped up from last evening by Susan)

That’s the number of questions Caroline Kennedy has answered in her pursuit to secure Hillary Clinton’s seat, according to THIS article in the NY Times. Want to guess how many interviews she has granted in this pursuit? Zero. How about answers to questions regarding her finances? Zero. Yes, Caroline Kennedy is using the Barack Obama School of campaigning – give up NO information whatsoever. None. According to the article:

If she were applying to be, say, an undersecretary of education in Barack Obama’s new administration, Caroline Kennedy would have to fill out a 63-item confidential questionnaire disclosing potentially embarrassing text messages and diary entries, the immigration status of her household staff, even copies of every résumé she used in the last 10 years.

If she were running for election to the Senate, Ms. Kennedy would have to file a 10-part, publicly available report disclosing her financial assets, credit card debts, mortgages, book deals and the sources of any payments greater than $5,000 in the last three years.

But Ms. Kennedy, who has asked Gov. David A. Paterson to appoint her to succeed Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton — and who helped oversee the vetting process for Mr. Obama’s possible running mates — is declining to provide a variety of basic data, including companies she has a stake in and whether she has ever been charged with a crime.

Isn’t that just fitting considering Obama’s own levels of secrecy? Once again, it begs the question WHY she wants to be a politician. It would seem she sees it not as a service to the people of New York, but as an honor OWED her. I’d say she’s a bit unclear on the responsibilities of the job. Never mind that this is an appointed position, and there are actually other people out there interested in the position who are FAR more qualified than she, say Andrew Cuomo, for starters (and I, too, would love to have a woman replace a woman in this seat, but women are not interchageable by gender alone. Experience, qualifications, and commitment to public service count, too.).

Jonah Goldberg had an interesting comparison of Gov. Sarah Palin and Caroline Kennedy in this article: Cinderella vs. the Barracuda
A perfect example of the bowel-stewing self-indulgence of elite liberalism:

For people who think there’s no cultural divide in this country, consider the treatment of two women much in the news in 2008.

The first is Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. A woman from very humble roots and with a very blue-collar life story, she worked with her steelworker and professional-fisherman husband to provide a life for their large family. She got involved in the PTA. She became mayor of her small town, then rose, by dint of her dedication and almost naive fearlessness, to the job of governor. In a mainstream, almost romantic sense, it’s almost like she was designed by God for a Hallmark movie of the week.

But, when John McCain picked her to be his running mate, the full fury of the liberal establishment — and sizable swaths of the conservative establishment, some of whom dubbed her a “cancer” on the GOP — came down on her with a vengeance usually reserved for Klansmen and pedophiles. Don’t get me wrong: There were valid criticisms to make. But that is quite a different thing than saying all of the criticism was valid or that the intensity and volume of the criticism was warranted.

No kidding. Americans used to revel in the “pulling oneself up by one’s bootstraps” kind of story. Gov. Palin couldn’t BE a better example of that rise. Well, maybe not quite as good as President Bill Clinton, but still – she clearly has made something of herself through hard work and perseverance. Not that you could tell that by the media’s attacks on her.

And now to potential senator from the Great State of New York:

Then there’s Caroline Bouvier Kennedy, daughter of John F. Kennedy, sister of John Jr., niece of Senators Ted and Robert Kennedy, granddaughter of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, and the cousin of myriad other Kennedys and Shrivers who’ve burrowed deep into the timber of the house of liberalism. A multimillionaire from birth, Ms. Kennedy has spent most of her life on the charity-benefit and cotillion circuit. A product of the Brearley School in New York and the Concord Academy in Massachusetts before she attended Harvard and Columbia, Kennedy has made the importance of public education her signature cause.

Sweet Caroline (she was the inspiration for the Neil Diamond song) recently made it known that she would like to be appointed to Hillary Clinton’s vacant Senate seat.

One could say without fear of overstating things that the liberal reaction to the inexperienced Caroline has been somewhat more gracious than the reaction to the “inexperienced” Palin. Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post has devoted two columns in as many weeks to this “fairy tale” scenario in which Kennedy, our “tragic national princess,” is finally rewarded — for her years of quiet dignity, selflessly avoiding scandal and the paparazzi — with the Senate seat that once belonged to her uncle Bobby. What’s astounding about the normally sensible Marcus’s case for “the Cinderella Kennedy” (New York magazine’s phrase) is that she doesn’t really make one, at least not on the merits. Marcus doesn’t even bother. It’s all schoolgirl gushing.

Pretty much. While there are very few actual requirements to be Senator, age being one of the few. But, don’t you think that wanting to BE a politician might be helpful?? You know, going among the people, talking to them, shaking their hands, going to meeting after meeting after meeting? Just sayin’. Not that that seems to matter to The NY Times:

The editors of the New York Times, in a more skeptical editorial, summarized her qualifications thusly: “Ms. Kennedy has much going for her. As a public figure, she carries the glamour and poignancy of her family …” The editors then went on to describe what great liberals her dad and uncles were. That’s it.

Wow. Talk about your hard-hitting journalism! Way to GO, NY Times!!! Goldberg continued:

This (is) a perfect example of the bowel-stewing self-indulgence of elite liberalism.

Here’s a news flash: Not everyone truckles with doe-eyed awe at “America’s royal family.” Some of us don’t even like the idea of American royal families. JFK and RFK had their good points, but they don’t deserve the beatification they receive on a daily basis. As a man, Teddy Kennedy is hardly a role model, and as a public servant he’s not much better. I, for one, don’t think denying poor black kids private-school scholarships (aka vouchers) is heroic. Nor do I think his support for alternative energy, except when it might obstruct his Hyannis Port estate’s views with windmills, is admirable.

Simply, the Kennedy clan is no priestly caste, serving as the conscience of the nation, and its progeny do not deserve eternal deference.

You gotta admit – he has a point. Many liberals, myself included, found Ted’s position on windmills to be just a TAD hypocritical, but it is to the more important issue that Mr. Goldberg is addressing: the Kennedys are hardly worthy of beatification with all of the personal, and political, issues in which they have engaged, or been caught, much less be “American royalty.”

Goldberg concludes:

Now, I know the comparison between Palin and Caroline Kennedy is not perfect. Each has strengths where the other has weaknesses, and the jobs of senator and vice president aren’t identical (the former actually has more responsibility, for starters).

But the comparison is nonetheless revealing. Palin’s selection triggered troughs of bile, vomited up from nearly every respectable liberal quarter. A Florida congressman, and Obama surrogate, insinuated that Palin was a “Nazi sympathizer” and anti-Semite (she’s not, but Caroline Kennedy’s grandfather was). Her by-the-bootstraps story was ridiculed by nearly every ex-debutante newsreader and avowed “feminist” in America.

Meanwhile, Caroline, with a resume perfectly suited to being a Kennedy and little else, is a Cinderella who deserves a Senate seat because, well, she just does.

Whatever Palin’s faults, Sarah Barracuda’s America has a lot more going for it than Sweet Caroline’s.

Oh, sure – Caroline Kennedy deserves the seat just because she wants it, at least in HER mind, and the mind of her family. That’s just exactly the kind of people we need in Washington, especially to provide oversight to The One Who Wants To Be King.

On a lighter note, I think Andy Borowitz, the humorist, has the perfect interpretation of Caroline Kennedy wanting something for not much in this piece:

Caroline Kennedy Asks to be Time’s Person of the Year
: Places Phone Call to Magazine’s Editor

Caroline Kennedy would like to be considered Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2009 and has let the magazine’s editor know of her interest in the honor, aides to Ms. Kennedy confirmed today.

While some observers considered Ms. Kennedy’s bid to be premature, especially since 2009 has not officially begun, aides to the New York senatorial aspirant said that it reflected her view that 2009 will be a very big year for her.

“I think Caroline’s calling Time magazine and asking to be put on the cover shows just what a tireless worker she is,” said cousin Kerry Kennedy. “When she really wants something, she’s not afraid to roll up her sleeves and make a phone call.”

Her cousin said that having witnessed Caroline’s work ethic, she has no doubt that she is deserving of Time’s highest honor: “I can’t tell you how many times she’s gotten the wrong number, been put on hold, or had calls dropped altogether.”

In addition to the Person of the Year honors, Kerry Kennedy said that Caroline had also expressed an interest in next year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

“That’s a call she hasn’t made yet,” Ms. Kennedy said. “She has to figure out the time difference in Oslo.”

Ahem. Well, she’s just as qualified for THAT as she is the US Senate.

I could be wrong, but isn’t SHE engaging in a “Pay to Play” scheme? Isn’t that what her uncle, Harry Reid, and all the others are doing by trying to force Gov. Paterson to choose her?? It sure seems to be pretty close to what is happening in IL, except from the other side. They are trying to coerce Gov. Paterson to give her this position for what, payback for all of her service during the election? Probably. Hey, I’m just sayin’. But it seems eerily similar to me. What do YOU say?

11 and 21 are very important numbers for open Senate seats these days: 11 questions for Caroline, and 21 recorded conversations for Rahm Emanuel.

Remember the numbers 11 and 21.

Comment by Bob | 2008-12-24 17:38:31

as usual people on No Quarter are wrong and have no idea what they are talking about.

there was not 21 conversations with Rahm Emanuel and BO…. that was a complete fabrication by gossip columnist Michael Sneed from the Chicago Sun Times, who has had multiple allegations made against her involving the deliberate spreading of disinformation and misinformation.

…. as usual No Quarter people taking complete BS and running with it…

by the way, is it normal that people that are being appointed to Senate seats need to take a grilling from the public and need to answer all kinds of questions outside of who is officially making the selection… can you give any other examples of anyone being appointed to a senate seat that has been grilled by the public or press….?

not sure if Caroline should be the Senator for NY, but that is up to the governor of NY…. but, many different types of people with many different types of experiences have been Senators… who is to say that pure business experience, as there have been Senators with no political experience and only business experience, is better than fund raising and education experience.

My, my the Dems and msm have really bought into the new system haven’t they? The fun continues and we all are left out of the party. Anyone that has the proper approval from the elites, need not have the credentials or qualifications that generally are required. All you need is the “AURA”. The bonus to having the aura is you don’t ever have to answer questions you don’t want to and never have to reveal anything about your past records of accomplishments or eligibility to run for said office. Now, Miss Kennedy doesn’t even have to run. She is asking to be given the job of Senator without even talking to her constituents or the media and that’s quite allright. She is from America’s royal family after all. She is entitled to it, just like so many others who have graced us with their presence this past election cycle. It’s the new way; entitlement gets you anything you want and the regular, honest, hardworking citizens are forced to accept it. It just gets better and better doesn’t it? When will Americans wake up and stand up for the things that made our country great instead of allowing this garbage to be thrown at them over and over?

….”the fun continues and we are left out of the party.” “Anyone that has the proper approval from the elites, need not have the credentials or qualifications that generally are required.”

This has nothing to do with the ‘elite’. It has everything to do with a very unpopular war, a very unpopular president with the lowest approval rating in history and the desperation for something to believe in. Incredibly, BO was at the right places at the right times, making general statements that have been interpreted in a million different ways by these hungrey people who feel they have found their savior. In a word, it is disgusting!

As a life long democrat. I am appalled that CK is even being considered for this seat. WHAT has she done. This is the Obama selection all over again. I hope GOV Patterson has more sense than to appoint her. It would be a grave mistake. She did not campaign for Clinton, she supported Obama. I hope Clinton does not support her. It’s pay bvack time.

Comment by FranSC | 2008-12-24 02:57:43

Let me get this straight. Caroline Kennedy decides to help derail the first woman candidate’s incredible good chances of winning the White House. Not just any woman, but the absolute best! Once that success was under her belt, and to add insult to injury, CK decides to go after this woman’s seat in the Senate. Now, that is gall! As the author of this article said, “women are not interchangeable”. Another commenter said she would like to see a woman replace Hillary. Yes, that is important, but again, not just any woman.

If a female politician expects women to support her, then in return and at the very least, these women should have at the top of their agendas advancing the cause of women. I’m not suggesting she should work only for women. But I am suggesting what good is it to have a woman if she is going to block the cause of women at every turn like CK has done so far and like Nancy Pelosi has done her entire political career.

There are many male candidates that would be more sympathetic and helpful to women than these two women. I have not heard CK say one thing about running as a woman other than she said, “As a mother”…CK is running as a Kennedy to preserve the dynasty, period, the end. I will never be able to forgive her for her role in helping defeat Hillary, being able to support somebody who defrauded his way to victory, then having the guts to go after that seat. The disillusionment is very painful. I never dreamed I would be in this place.

- I know right?!!

Gall isn’t a strong enough word.

I just can’t imagine having to be in Hillary’s shoes this past year. To say that there were sharks all around her is an understatement.

CK helped Obama over Hillary, and now she wants Hillary’s seat??? ugh.

So many backstabbers and people plotted against Hillary, and she still won the popular vote!

She’s an amazing woman.

Comment by AF catfish | 2008-12-24 15:21:54

CK is the epitome of the limosuine liberal who chooses Obama over Hillary.

She has no concept of what real working Americans need in a president, or a Senator.

Comment by sandi78 | 2008-12-23 23:50:07

I know Sarah Palin’s background is much less upscale than CK’s, but since when was being brought up by two schoolteachers an indication of “very humble roots”? Isn’t that solidly middle class?

Comment by FranSC | 2008-12-24 03:12:01

Sandi78, my thoughts exactly! I suppose these things are said about Sarah Palin because she did not have an Ivy League degree. Sarah Palin WAS helping advance the cause of women regardless of her less than Harvard or Yale degrees. But, isn’t that what this country is about?

One of the reasons Palin was so popular was because she had so many people who either identified with her or thought she understood problems on many levels. She was a very good candidate and continues to draw crowds just like BO did. GA Senator Chambliss said he had many people come speak on his behalf for his runoff election, but he said Sarah Palin electrified the crowds who flocked to where she was speaking. Sarah never forgot to mention women and their plights. I surely do not share her philosophy, but I appreciate the fact women were part of her agenda. I’m proud to say I voted for her.

Comment by NoTrollZone | 2008-12-24 14:38:29

I voted for her too. First I voted for Hillary and then I voted for Palin. Two women who could have done something good for the country. Instead I’ve got a man who I believe will do no good for this country at all. I still don’t vote for any woman, either. They have to meet standards of intelligence, compassion, commitment.
CK seems to be a self serving person — and an Obama stoodge.
Pelosi gives me the creeps as well. And both of these women treated Hillary
terribly.
From what I understand there are actually qualified women in NY that could do the Senate job well and serve the people of NY.

But he has managed to nail the Princess Caroline nepotism nonsense fairly well.

It’s really hard to refute charges of Liberal Elitism when the elite liberals keep pushing their elitism front and center.

And could not media spare us the “schoolgirl gushing” of faux-journalists like Marcus? Really Ruthie, you are an embarrassment to intelligent women throughout the country that cringe at your drivel.

Comment by Chicago Joe | 2008-12-24 08:01:35

Jonah Goldberg is sounding more sensible these days. Another recent column was a hit with me. As a lifelong Dem (except for BHO and BLAGO), and as Bobby Kennedy’s campaign manager in 6th grade mock convention who was devastated by his assassination, who has long mourned what could have been, I am offended, sickened and aggravated by the ascension of Ms. Kennedy Schlossberg entertaining the possibility of usurping this senate seat. Yes, please, give us more of her background. Haven’t heard a word about her husband, the missteps of her children, or her various imbroglios that must have occurred with her fund-raising. And the contrast to Sarah Palin is absolutely disgusting. Some might say that the “office” justifies the difference. I say that is just cover for the MSM to propagandize their own point of view. And frankly, I am sick of it. I wish some of the powers that be in the MSM would “woman up” and return to the roots of journalism.

Just sayin’. (That happens to be one of RRRAmy’s “trademarks), doncha know!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2008-12-24 08:56:12

I know – politics really DOES make for strange bedfellows, but I agree, Goldberg has had some good columns of late. If nothing else, he is tackling some of the issues the rest of the media has chosen to ignore.

And I hear you abt the Kennedys. Bobby was special, but he WORKED for where he got. Caroline, OTOH, has done very little to propel her to this position.

I have been a feminist really all my life, but isn’t it kind of ODD that all of a sudden, Caroline has dropped her husband’s name once she wanted this position??? Hillary ALWAYS used Rodham, always, and if I recall correctly, didn’t even take on the Clinton last name for a while after they got married. Seems to be that CK is running on her name and name alone. What kind of accomplishment is THAT, as Prieur said above?? Absurd…

Thanks, Chicago Joe – so it is! And I disagree with Anna – “Just sayin’ says a lot. It highlights the inherent hypocrisy or irony or lies being exposed in the previous sentence/paragraph.

Truthteller – yes, indeedy – 11 and 21. Wonder what will come out next??

Why is Kerry Kennedy all over the tube talking up That Other One? I know that all candidates have surrogates, but golly gee, it would be nice to hear Caroline speak for herself once. Why no personal interviews? Guess she feels that once she is ensconced into the coveted spot, who’s gonna wheedle it away from her? Way to go, Princess!

Kerry Kennedy used to be married to Andrew Cuomo (a very good choice for Senator) until he caught her having an adulterous affair and divorced her. There is very bad blood between the Kennedys and the Cuomos.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2008-12-24 15:07:11

It truly breaks my heart to see Caroline Kennedy
pulling rank. My first experience in partisan politics was during the ‘60 election. The Nixon/Kennedy debates were satirized during skits
on base (Air Force); great times, high energy–very
much as seen this year.

We lived through the Kennedy assassinations that
generally sealed off any hard examination of latter-day clan debacles. And there were many. It is difficult to maintain a legend so firmly embedded in the American psyche.

Ted and Caroline have broken the tenuous bond of trust between history and present by invoking JFK for political capital. The mask has slipped.

Once that fragile connection is snapped, the Kennedy name is forever diminished. Someone should sit her down and explain this to Caroline. Will she trade tradition for power? Her call…maybe our loss.

The ‘Cinderella’ Kennedy wants her share of the limelight. Are the dems nuts or something? After Bush, this happened to the repubs. they are currently disarrayed and screwed. By going in for this nonsense, the dems want to follow the repubs into chaos. Believe me, by 2010 and 2012, the repubs will storm back into power. With friends like Pelosi and Reid, who needs enemies? And there will be a backlash against the dems for this choice. Its inevitable.

Nah, they will just change the election laws again. This time by county. Major cities will be allowed to vote three weeks in advance and have no voter registration. Just walk in and pull the lever.

the rest of the country will just have to vote on elections day with a voter id card.

Rules apply to everyone BUT the “now new elite”, Barack Obama and Co., and anyone who supported him (not those he threw under the bus, however, they have to play by the rules and anything which puts Mr. Obama in a “bad” light is definitely a faux pax in this new administration).

Caroline does not have to play by the rules as she supported Mr. O. from Day One as the CHOSEN ONE. In Mr. Obama’s new administration, experience is definitely a detriment.

The Democratic party has truly lost its way. They do not want the Clintons anywhere around (I am sure Nancy P. and Co. fought tooth and nail not to have Hillary on the team), but they still bow down to the Kennedys.

I said that the same liberals that screeched about dynasties and entitlement would not say one word about this in reference to Caroline Kennedy.

They suddenly now agree that dynasties are good and there’s nothing wrong with a sense of entitlement – as long as you’re a Kennedy.

None of them see the hypocrisy or irony in this change in attitude.

The same folks that vilified Hillary and Palin in the crudest terms now interpret any criticism of Caroline’s lack of experience as misogyny. But they had no problem with the terms b*tch, c*nt, and wh*re. Lighten up they said. Have a sense of humor.

Where’s their sense of humor now?

I thinks that if we can put pressure on Caroline herself she may decide that she doesn’t want the seat so much. There are several candidates who are more qualified than CK. i heard that NOW is supporting Carolyn Maloney who is a congress woman from Long Island.Paterson has said that he would like a senator from upstate. The governor is being pressured by Uncle Teddy and O. The mayor of NYC also favors CK. I don’t think that Paterson wants to appoint her The difference between press reaction to her and Palin is disgusting.

This really goes against “The American Dream” envisioned by Thomas Jefferson. A big part of our Revolution was to throw off the entitlement of the aristocracy who gained positions and favor through landed inheritance not through ability to actually do anything. It is part of this country’s intrinsic identity that by hard work and determination one can be successful. This is what keeps our country successful and our democracy intact.

The US Senate is not the House of Lords. I’m starting to wonder if our government is becoming more like the HMS Pinafore’s Monarch of the Sea, complete with his sisters, his cousins and his aunts.

“Ms Kennedy” getting a divorce. The last I knew she was married and had taken her husband’s name.

Every person who refers to her as Ms Kennedy is promoting the idea that having the Kennedy name makes her qualified to serve as a senator.

2. I remember the crack someone made about Hillary as President – that men in the position tend to age faster due to the stress and that it would be horrible to be forced to look at a woman who is ageing in the same manner.

I find your comment sexist, ageist, distasteful and offensive.

WORKING AMERICANS THAT PLAY THE GAME FAIRLY AND PAY THEIR DUES CONTINUE TO GET OVERLOOKED AND SCREWED. OBAMA GOING FROM THE STATE HOUSE TO THE WHITEHOUSE IS A JOKE.

It is funny that the press has suddenly made a hero out of Ted Kennedy. He did great harm to the Democratic Party- People ask Is he not the guy that killed that girl?

If I were Govenor Patterson I would not choose Ms. Kennedy. This would stink to the high heavens.I would venture to say there are way more qualified women whether they be an elected official in state or federal government. One that comes to mind is Rep. Carolyn Maloney elected to the House in 1993. This would be the right choice.

First, Kennedy supported the liar Obama. Secondly, Kerry Kennedy put Andrew Cuomo through a very public divorce humiliation when her affair was discovered as the reason for the breakup. Thirdy, as soon as Palin walked out on the stage to be the VP candidate BO and his sexist pig people went to work with the mainstream media puppets to portray her as a ‘joke’ from Alaska with no Ivy league education. Her accomplishemnts were diminished, her family was smeared and her very American roots were ridiculed. But remember almost half of the American people didn’t buy it and supported her. Her rallies(I attended two of them here in Va.) had 20,000 and over 10,000 at another one. BO and his people saw her charisma and her record in Alaska and set out from day one to destroy her. Without the MSM this never could have happened. But today in my hometown newspaper there is a very negative article about CK and the writer is expressing doubt that she can be appointed because of a backlash against entitlement. I think the CK affair has illuminated the whole corrupt pay to play atmosphere of the Dems and Repubs.
