“Open Thread”? Who the heck is up at this crazy hour?!?

Blago is innocent. He tried to scare off all the political manipulators by demanding a large sum of money. His plan is a win either way. If everybody backs off, he gets to choose the replacement for Barack Obama, which is what he wanted all along anyways.

If Blago ends up receiving a large sum of money, he was going to turn it over to the FBI and out the bribers.

Can anyone disprove the above scenarios beyond a shadow of a doubt? This whole case was a set up to divert attention away from other pressing issues, including the concept of natural born citizen versus just being a citizen.

Unfortunately, some people just have to invoke this race issue into the picture. How about Illinois approach it from the legal standpoint as to whether Burris can be seated or not?

Blago is still governor of Illinois, and has the right to appoint; Burris is the governor’s choice, and must be seated.

When will anyone call a black man and their actions racist? When will a black man ever get charge with a hate crime? The only one using race and acting racist in this case is the black communinity and black politicians. I am “F”ing sick of it! I guess I am the racist now? LOL

Blagojevich is a master politician, with the stroke of his pen he has tied the president elect and the Dem leadership in a knot putting them at odds with the AA community.

I was afraid of this sort of thing. Because BO is really of mixed ethnicity and not at all entitled to any claim on our African AMERICAN heritage, this sort on conflict was predictable. He, as Chomsky points out, is a brand of celebrity that has been packaged and sold, as being a black savior.

His skin is dark (but there are many of us with Mediterranean heritage who have skin as dark or darker who are considered to be white), but he was raised and educated by whites. He has learned a role, but it really is only skin deep. Powerful whites have chosen him to be the leader of the Democratic Party, because he can be manipulated, and because he can be used to placate a portion of our population. The people who have been sold the biggest fraud and who will be betrayed the most by the choice of BO are blacks.

This immediate conflict over Burris is complicated, but the general reality is that racism is alive and well in this country. Only now racism is clearly complicated by overt black on white racism, as well as the historic white on black racism. No, BO represents more problems for this country on the question of racism, not fewer.

He has learned the part of playing a black man, but I don’t for one second believe he cares a tinker’s damn for anyone, but himself. We have a huge mess on our hands that is the result of people not being critical or thoughtful about their political choices. This is what happens when immature and ill-informed people “buy” into media hype. I feel really badly for Burris, who appears to be a decent person; but I don’t think the issue really is about him. I think this is about reality versus false hope and mob rule.

The Dems are being small minded and petty. In 8 yrs they couldn’t find their spines long enough to stand up to George Bush, but suddenly they want to do battle against Burris? Bah humbug. Hypocrites and weenies.

I find it AMAZING that Lisa Madigan has not stopped her biased tactics or with these latest brasen acts, not recused herself-let alone offer to represent the SOS for not confirming Burris, when she wanted the seat in question and Harry Reid was also pushing her for the seat.

Haunting sentence, prescient even. I tried to think of a clever way to point out that those words will apply to the outcome of almost any political power struggle for the next four years but couldn’t think of anything. So I’ll just say - Stupid is as stupid does.

And by the way regarding the comment by William L. Donlon (2009-01-03 09:39:37). That Tamy Duckworth is really connected isn’t she. Remember when Rahm Emanuel forced the people’s popular choice Marie Cagalus (sp) out of the race for congress and replaced her with Duckworth (who lost a practically unlosable election)?
Is that when the infrastructure of the Democratic party got the bit between their teeth? Too bad we didn’t nip that in the bud, or were they too powerful even back then?

I knew that replacement was a momentous event, I just didn’t know why.

let’s agree, reid is making a total fool out of himself. and furthmore the citizens of this country and home state want more from him that this crap!

How will the Dems fix this problem they created for themselves? Such a bunch of inept bunglers.

The main problem with talking about BO, Blag, Burris and Reid is that there is an attempt to simplify this discussion by looking at each person’s race and trying to draw a moral judgment on their conduct from that perspective. White guys who support a black candidate are good, while white guys who don’t are bad. That is the wrong paradigm.

The issues should be who is qualified for the job and who is following the law. Blag appears to have broken some laws, but may well have made a reasonable choice with Burris. The questions for Blag are: is he entitled to make this choice and is it a good choice? Burris appears to have accepted this process and the questions for him are: is he qualified and is he behaving appropriately by accepting this position? Reid and BO have to be judged based on their rights to comment and to play a role in this process. I think they, like any of us, have the right to comment; it seems unlikely that they have any legal right to prevent Burris’s appointment.

Blag can be guilty of doing wrong and still have made a good choice in fulfilling this vacancy. (If he didn’t take a bribe to put Burris’s name forward, then he could be doing the right thing in this case. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t still be a crook and a racist. This is a good move on his part to undermine the hostility directed at him.)

On the other hand, Reid and BO appear to be guilty of protesting too much. I think their over-zealous efforts to appear as though they are doing the right thing by opposing Blag and Burris is being made to cover the reality that both a pretty sleazy characters with histories of having played dirty tricks and politics to maintain their power base. They look like they are opposing Blag so as to “prove” they are not friends with him or like him….If he says up, they say down….Childish and incredibly shallow….It’s another one of BO famous deflection moves.

If we look at the people and their actions and not the color of their skin, we may be able to sort this out.

Anything that has Blago saying Motherfer — release it.

What does Reid have to say to Blago.

What do ALL three have in common?? Race!!

Leadership.
Proven ability to run for Office.
Proven ability to conduct business in Office.
Proven vote getting appeal.
No known scandals.
Good family men.
Ground up experience.

If Fiztgerald can release the Blago saying Mother Fer taps, he can release the Reid saying “Blacks need not apply” Tap — NOW. Before Tuesday!

Harry Reid should be forced by the Senate, backed by the Congressional Black Caucus,

To resign as Majority Leader.
