Larry Johnson on John Batchelor tonight! * Hope springs anew * Open Thread!

Do NOT miss Larry Johnson, a Sunday night regular on the great national AM radio show hosted by John Batchelor, one of the sharpest analysts out there. John hosts a provocative, fascinating show that also makes you think (a rare double offering on AM radio). Listen live here via Los Angeles AM station KFI 640, starting at 7:00 p.m. PT. (Drop by early if you haven’t listened before since you may need to download a small, easy-to-install piece of software to listen.) Larry joins the show at 7:30 p.m. every Sunday. ALSO: Uppity Woman has a great piece by Batchelor up at her blog, “RBO: Batchelor Coverage of Gaza.” [Susan's Note: This should be interesting since John and Larry will have different POVs, but they'll doubtless demonstrate how thoughtful people can disagree agreeably (a good lesson for many to learn)!,]

::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Ah, you cynics. You thought hopey-changey was all illusion, a game to win an election followed by [what in the hell do we do now].

But look now! Tim Kaine has just been named the new national chair of the Democratic party! Tim is known for his strong support for feminist causes, including abortion rights. (I wonder if Dr. Lynette Long will be discussing Gov. Kaine’s appointment tomorrow night on her radio show.)

And they are just lovin’ us around the world! Look at this happy group in Jakarta, Indonesia celebrating our new leader at an anti-Israel protest!

Indonesia Israel Protest

I found that image at Powerline, which reports:

So I confess to some satisfaction in seeing Obama’s likeness paraded at a hate rally in Jakarta, along with those of Maburak and Olmert. The protesters were blaming Obama for Israel’s attack on Hamas, when he hasn’t even been inaugurated yet!

It is thrilling to feel such excitement. But reality has an unfortunate way of breaking the balloons.

Comment by skinny malinky | 2009-01-05 00:41:51

Any reasonable person would infer that a politically damaging tape like this would have been brought out during the epic and contentious long election season. Even the tape the LA Times was confirmed to exist, even if it wasn’t shown. With the whitey tape, you had one person insisting it was real, and a lot of anonymous sources and NQ screennames talking about it like it existed. But no reliable source said they saw the tape, or could confirm that it existed at all. So while there’s no way to prove the tape doesn’t exist, there’s no need to. Intelligent people can be confident the tape doesn’t exist for the above reasons.

Comment by Undercover Black Man | 2009-01-05 01:02:43

^ Now here’s a man who sounds like he can function in the grown-up world.

Comment by Mort | 2009-01-05 01:18:15

Logical fallacies.

Who are you trying to convince, yourself?

Sure sounds like it.

Chances are, given the political climate, and the money thrown around, given the conditions under which Obama was handed the Presidency, it makes more than enough sense to think a damaging tape was, in fact, held back, by (momentarily) powerful interests.

We’re only now getting to any truth about Blago, and Rezko, and Obama, why would the tape be any different?

But you know, you can pretend.

And then there is truth.

And no amount of pretend can make that truth go away.

Comment by C.S. | 2009-01-05 08:20:43

By skinny malinky’s logic, we can all infer that the alleged Hawaii birth certificate of the alleged Barack Obama exists only in the mind of the alleged Barry Soertoro since it is rumored to exist and yet no reliable source has seen it and Barry Soertoro, aka Barack Obama, refuses to produce it for the Judicial system that is charged with protecting our Constitution.

And, if it had existed during this drawn out and contentious election season, someone would have produced it if only to avoid the historical embarrassing legacy to the Democratic party of supporting an unconstitutional candidate.

Therefore, intelligent people can be confident that the birth certificate doesn’t exist and the witnesses, grandmother, relatives and government officials, who swear Soertoro/Obama was born in Kenya are correct and he is therefore not a native son entitled to run as a candidate for president of the United States.

You don’t see them saying this time and money would be better served investing in k-12 education with the aim of educating young people to think critically?

Along with impeachment, thats off the table.

Comment by imustprotest | 2009-01-04 23:28:19

The focus should be Richardson and any impropriates, and his connection with the President Select. The fallback distraction of what we used to consider as far right behavior, “Clinton bashing” is ironic and sickening at the same time. I agree. What ever happened to concerns about social issues? Protection and shielding of The One seems to take precedence.

It’s all the Obots have. Mindless ridicule.

They can’t comprehend that the Republicans CHOSE not to use it. Just like John McCain — for reason I’ll never fathom — chose not to run the great commercial he had set to go that showed Jeremiah Wright. Cluck, cluck.

We had no influence with McCain’s campaign or the GOP. We reported. They had it. They didn’t use it. End of story.

Comment by OBAMA IS A FRAUD | 2009-01-04 21:48:21

Susan…we all know it exists. And believe the McCain camp had a 50/50 shot that if they used it they would be labeled “racists” or it would somehow backfire. I don’t understand a lot of McCain’s choices, the ones that somehow seemed honorable and gentlemanly, but ultimately the lack of truth about Fraudbama cost him the election. And our country is in trouble now. Sigh. As for Larry and you reporting on it…good job. Anyone with a brain believed it was out there…especially with James-Brown-in-a-Dress practicing her “Why’d He?” nonsense.

Comment by pressboy | 2009-01-04 22:18:29

Anyone with a brain believed it was out there…especially with James-Brown-in-a-Dress practicing her “Why’d He?” nonsense.

Anyone with a brain should be able to understand that there has never been any proof that Larry’s story was true. In fact, Larry contradicted himself, telling irreconcilable versions of the story (sources were all Republicans at first, then the majority of them were Democrats). Michelle on stage with Farrakhan? Didn’t happen. Laying blame for Katrina at an event that supposedly took place before the hurricane? Impossible.

And the belief that the “why’d he” thing came from the Obama campaign is an NQ legend and nothing more. Simply did not happen. Came from an anonymous poster at boomantribune who didn’t cite any source. But it feels good for people like you to believe the self-serving myth.

Comment by OBAMA IS A FRAUD | 2009-01-04 23:07:48

pressboy-the-troll…did any of you MORONS ever realize that we ALL heard of the whitey tape from REAL people in politics? Not little boys blogging for Fraudbama from Gaza in their mommy’s basement, in their underpants. Long before I came to NQ I knew about it from people who wouldn’t take your phone calls. WHY on earth is ANY of this a surprise? Quite frankly, all you have to do is read MeChelle’s illiterate thesis to know that she’s probably ranted about whitey 1,000 times and someone has a tape. At this point you’d be a total MORON to deny it. ROFLMAO. WE paid for her edumacation and all she DID was piss on whitey and race bait. Oh well. And it’s YOU people who KEEP ON BRINGING UP THE WHITEY TAPE. The rest of us have moved on.

It’s that one shytty little thing that would put some undeniable mud all over your little bot faces. You still just pray it doesn’t exist. Otherwise, why bring it up?

Comment by Undercover Black Man | 2009-01-05 00:09:40

WE paid for her edumacation and all she DID was piss on whitey and race bait.

Wow. A white woman mocks a black woman by referring to the black woman’s “edumacation.”

You need to think about where your self-proclaimed hatred is taking you. Confronted with factual refutations of your statements, you reply with ebonics — solely because the person you’re hating on is black.

“Edumacation” and an accusation of “race baiting”…in the same sentence. What a glaring lack of self-awareness. This is just a wild guess, but you don’t have as many Ivy League degrees as Michelle Obama, do you?

The whitey tape issues are still these:

1. Larry told demonstrably false stories about the whitey tape.

2. The “why’d he” explanation did not come from the Obama campaign.

Your claims that Larry’s tape stories were self-evidently true, and that Michelle Obama offered a “why’d he” defense, are false.

Try dealing with reality, instead of going racist.

How do you know the republicans aren’t using it to push things like Clean Coal Tech through (I still can’t believe Barky supports it)or the FISA mess or perhaps to keep Bush and his minions out of the Hague? Hell, If I were a republican, I’d use it to save my ass and my party. Is it beyond the realm of possibilty that the neocons aren’t using it to blackmail him? What else can explain ‘the most liberal person in the senate’ and his lunge to the center?

Yes Strawberrybitch…this is all way more complicated than the trolls understand. Like I said…why on EARTH is the tape a big shocker when Mechelle expresses her hate on a daily basis anyway?

Comment by Strawberrybitch | 2009-01-04 23:31:39

OIAF, one of the reasons I decided politics wasn’t for me (damn the student loans) was because it truly is a blood sport. People you think are life long friends (Richardson) can turn on you like…well…Judas. People like this ‘pressboy’ (ie mailroomguy) see politics like checkers when it’s actually like Vulcan chess. You need to see it coming from all sides, I’m not that bloodthirsty or clever.

Any other year…I never would have cared. I always knew politics were dirty, but if Clinton won, Gore, Kerry, etc. what the hell. But this is a whole new ballgame IMO and I really don’t think American Politics have ever been this vile, low, filthy and sickening. As much as I know Fraudbama is going to suck azz as a “President” and it’s a total JOKE…best to let the Dems seal their own fate so we can get rid of them in 2010 and 2012. You’re such a git. There is no way any president (besides someone like Hillary) could weather the next four years. One thing I’ve noticed is that these Obots, as they are called, is that they keep dragging up their own version of “facts” with no proof and expect it to be considered sacrosaunt!

One very real fact is that Michelle Obama, soon to claim the title of “first lady” attended the God Damn Church of America also and that if she wasn’t aware of the “chickens coming home to roost” sermon it is because she isn’t the church going Christian she claims to be. And yet she did not feel any need to show her respect for the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack or to shore up her husband’s image by attending the seventh anniversary of the country wide memorial honoring the victims and the relatives.

Take that fact and twist it into a positive.

(What’s sad is that, years ago, they used to create stunningly beautiful demonstrations — there was one — I have a photo of it somewhere — they created a Picasso bird of peace, with people, on a Santa Monica beach. It was visible only from the air, and someone flew over and took a shot from a plane. Just stunning and eloquent.)

I remember seeing code pink people disrupt Hillary rallies by yelling over her.
Plus one of their founders was on the board of the Women’s Media Center who also pushed Obama.
So they are one of the “women’s groups” that don’t seem to care about women.

Also they seem to have swooned over Obama as the great bringer of peace. When Mr. Lightworker doesn’t deliver, I wonder what they will do?

I can’t believe it’s a good thing to be seen as a false messiah. Don’t people get upset over things like that?

As for the work they used to do… I never saw any of the art or anything, but it does sound beautiful. I was on their website trying to find out if they were protesting the O and didn’t find anything on that, but did see that they had some blip where Molly Ivans had said nice things about them. So at one point I guess they had something good going for them. Maybe they will again.

John Batchelor is one of the rare few analysts worth listening to. Very astute and balanced, not like the other media frauds whose gyros are out of whack.

On another topic the “whitey tape” thing is only a persistent irritant if you empower it by reacting emotionally to it. I suggest that we ignore it.

By the way, let the facts reveal that the LA Times is still sitting on a video that is far more damaging the any “whitey tape” would have been.

When ever is see any reference to the “whitey tape” I immediately recall the LA Times journalistic malfeasance.

Comment by Diana L. C. | 2009-01-04 21:35:52

I immediately recall many other instances of what would have been very damaging information for earlier presidents public relations not coming out for years, some until they were dead. I am sure many of us who read and follow histor can name a lot of them. I myself wonder why’d he denied it by saying she was saying “why’d he.”

But I do notice one thing: when there is a news item that is really troubling to the obots about THE ONE’s behavior, they bring up the tape in order NOT to discuss the issue at hand.

For all you obots who don’t know logic, that is called the “straw man” or, perhaps, also the “red herring” tactic, a logical fallacy. Your illogic is exactly why you voted the way you did.

He is personally opposed to abortion and same sex marriage. Another personally sexist and homophobic politician which fits into recurring sexist and homophobic pattern of Obama and Warren.

Tim Kaine has stated he is personally opposed to abortion but he opposes overturning Roe v. Wade. He supports restrictions on abortion, such as requiring parental consent and banning so-called partial-birth abortions in cases where the woman’s health is not at risk.

Kaine also opposed an amendment to the Virginia Constitution that would define marriage as that between one man and one woman, though he has publicly stated that he personally opposes same-sex marriage.

Obama owes a lot to Dean …
Obama used Dean’s strategies for fundraising over the Internet and campaigning in all 50 states. Yet, Dean has been missing in action for many weeks. Instead of thanking Dean for giving him the blueprint to reach the White House, Obama seems to have forgotten him. Or, maybe Dean couldn’t face the truth about Obama anymore and he decided to fade away? Very mysterious!

So someone who doesn’t want to overturn Roe v Wade is anti-choice?

Comment by elise | 2009-01-05 02:25:44

When the chairman of the DNC personally doesn’t favor the right to choose? Yea, skinny, there’s something wrong with that. When he “personally” doesn’t support gay rights, why is he a good candidate for chairman of the DNC? Obama voted for immunity for telecoms who violated the law to cooperate with Bush. He refuse to accept public financing for the GE which may not mean anything to you, but for some Dems (and ex-Dems) it means he is going to owe some favors down the line. You can claim these donations were $10 at a time, but that isn’t going to fly with anyone who isn’t delusional.

Comment by Winston | 2009-01-05 06:00:46

“When the chairman of the DNC personally doesn’t favor the right to choose?”

You know very well that this whole word-game “Right to choose” is intended to shift the debate away from the fact that, scientifically speaking, a viable human life might be terminated by a medical procedure and that this introduces innumerable medical ethics issues.

Common sense suggest that it is a reasonable debate and should not be made a mockery by the matra “Right to Choose” as if your rights were being infringed upon in an open election. We are talking about a human life, cruel and unusual punishment, and the infliction of pain on the unborn.

I reject the “Right to Choose” rhetoric on its face. It is a very delicate issue and such tactics are a sure sign of changing the subject by obfuscation.

Comment by elise | 2009-01-05 17:41:40

Winston, will you concede we have the right to disagree/ When a viable baby is born, every effort should be made to provide medical attention.

But your opinion of a woman’s right to choose abortion, before that stage is based on your religious beliefs not mine.

Women have made this choice since the beginning of time and would continue to do so if Roe were overturned. The difference being the circumstances under which the abortion is performed. I won’t explain my situation to you or what led to my decision, but I had an illegal abortion as a teenager. I have never regretted the decision and I won’t apologize.

Your opinion means nothing to me. And I stand by my words. The Democratic Party is the Party who has promised me other women will not have to go through what I did and it has occurred to me this year neither the RNC or the DNC has the slightest intention of ever overturning Roe because it is such a convenient tool to pull the strings of the largest voting block in the country.

So screw you and your self righteous piety.

Comment by donna darko | 2009-01-05 03:23:37

Okay, last comment for a long time. Promise.

Oppression exists on three levels: institutional, symbolic/cultural and personal.

Roe v Wade and gay marriage laws are institutional but PUMAs argued against symbolic/cultural sexism and homophobia.

Racism is outlawed in the US but symbolic/cultural and personal racism are more pernicious and difficult to uproot.

Even with Roe v Wade or gay marriage laws secured, cultural and personal sexism and homophobia are more pernicious.

Comment by Winston | 2009-01-05 05:44:50

How exactly is being opposed to abortion a sign of sexism? Millions of women are opposed to abortion.

Sexism would be if you were only opposed to killing males and not females. Most people who are against abortion are against it no matter what the gender of the unborn fetus happens to be.

Sheesh.

Once the investigation became more widely known through national media reports last month, sources tell ABC News, the Obama Transition Team realized the FBI would not be able to give Richardson a clean political bill of health before the new administration is ready to send his nomination up to the Senate for confirmation.”

The fifth of the world that is Muslim is angry at Obama:

Barack Obama’s silence on Gaza bombings is galling to Arabs: A region that had high hopes for him now feels he’s condoning Israeli attack

President-elect Barack Obama’s silence on the 8-day-old offensive in Gaza is drawing criticism among Arabs who have grown skeptical about hopes that his administration will break with the Mideast policies of the Bush era.

Arab commentators maintain, however, that Obama did comment on foreign affairs when he issued a statement condemning the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and that he has given several news conferences outlining his economic proposals. They suggest that his refusal to speak out on Gaza—where at least 460 Palestinians have died, compared with four Israeli deaths from the rockets—implies indifference to the plight of Palestinians or even complicity with Israel.

The satellite TV network Al Jazeera contrasted footage of Obama wearing shorts and playing golf in Hawaii with scenes of the carnage in Gaza, by way of highlighting what it called “the deafening silence from the Obama team.”

It is not only the Arab world that has noticed the president-elect’s silence: At a gathering of celebrities to condemn Israel’s assault in London on Friday, speakers called on Obama to speak out.

“His current silence falls into the pattern of disappointment so far,” said Paul Salem, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. “Most people understand that the president-elect can’t take issue with what the current president is saying, but it certainly is a disappointment.”

Larry:

I have a question and I’m hoping you or someone else with “special” knowledge of these matters can answer it. Because I can’t, for the life of me, figure out these rules (sarcasm intended).

Barack H. Obama, who has spent the last many months bleating like a violated goat about the evil perpetrated by George W. Bush (used both middle initials in the interest of fairness) and who staked his entire presidential campaign on making that fruit as rotten as possible and hanging it around the neck of anyone who opposed him (first Hillary R. Clinton and then John S. McCain) (notice I continue the middle initial tradition — this is for the NSA — do not come to my house, please — I do not find you amusing), now declares that PROTOCOL and DECORUM trumps all other considerations? Am I missing something? Or, is that smell coming from somewhere else?

He CAN’T speak a WORD about what is going on in the Middle East? And this is because it’s TRADITIONAL that the incoming POTUS not speak? About ANYTHING?

The tradition of not speaking ill of the sitting POTUS applies (or, used to) to FORMER Presidents, not those about to take office. Where did this suddenly discovered tradition come from?

And, this is not about what position he might take — this is not about pro-I or pro-P — it’s about Pro-BHO. Is BHO merely a PRO at election politics who has no foggy idea what he’s doing? I get the distinct impression, as I suspect do others, that he doesn’t say anything because he doesn’t have the slightest idea what to say.

I’m sorry. The incoming President is prohibited from expressing an OPINION? That’s odd. Just a few weeks ago, he was expressing his opinion on anything and everything political and otherwise.

He has campaign planks on these subjects. Does he not stand behind them? He published them then and waved them in the face of his opponents (and the sitting President). Is he now mute on the same topics?

And this is because he WON the election? Maybe, possibly, if he had LOST the election. But, he didn’t. He WON. Now he’s days from his inauguration and suddenly he has no opinion because it might unsettle GWB’s delicate constitution (I know, that was a good one, see how I slipped constitution in there)?

When did he become such a reticent fellow? A fellow so respectful of the sitting POTUS?

What he seems to miss is that he always has a position and an influence, whether or not he speaks (for my money, he could stay this reticent for the next 4 years — but it’s not likely). His silence has an effect and is having an effect. He wanted to be POTUS. And so he is. What he says is important. What he does not say is important.

And, what he will discover quickly is, when you choose silence, others will fill that silence with what they wish and you, by not speaking, provide them that license.

Sorry, as POTUS, you don’t get to be “not wrong” by not having “a dog in that fight.” You cannot vote “Present.” BHO has had sugar daddy’s during his entire political career. Oops. Problem. Now he is the Sugar Daddy of Pennsylvania Avenue, the highest ranking political figure in this nation. There is no one there to pave the way for him. He IS him. There is no HIM higher than HE now is.

Anyway, maybe somebody else can explain this to me. I, obviously, don’t get it.

Can you explain this “protocol” to me?

Because I find it, shall we say, a bit queer? That’s the British use of the word, so it doesn’t mean what you might have thought, not at all. It does not mean I’m calling him out as a wimp, or in any way suggesting the P word might apply (let’s just say it rhymes with another name for your kitty). It’s only a figure of speech.

But, certainly SOME word applies.

Can you help me out with this?

I (and the rest of the world) are waiting. I mean, really, if he’s going to save the world on January 20th, is there something all that terrible about doing it a few days early? I can’t imagine anyone who would mind.

Thanks, as always.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/jan/04/obama-gaza-israel

Barack Obama’s chances of making a fresh start in US relations with the Muslim world, and the Middle East in particular, appear to diminish with each new wave of Israeli attacks on Palestinian targets in Gaza. That seems hardly fair, given the president-elect does not take office until January 20. But foreign wars don’t wait for Washington inaugurations.

Obama has remained wholly silent during the Gaza crisis. His aides say he is following established protocol that the US has only one president at a time. Hillary Clinton, his designated secretary of state, and Joe Biden, the vice-president-elect and foreign policy expert, have also been uncharacteristically taciturn on the subject.

But evidence is mounting that Obama is already losing ground among key Arab and Muslim audiences that cannot understand why, given his promise of change, he has not spoken out. Arab commentators and editorialists say there is growing disappointment at Obama’s detachment – and that his failure to distance himself from George Bush’s strongly pro-Israeli stance is encouraging the belief that he either shares Bush’s bias or simply does not care.

The Al-Jazeera satellite television station recently broadcast footage of Obama on holiday in Hawaii, wearing shorts and playing golf, juxtaposed with scenes of bloodshed and mayhem in Gaza. Its report criticising “the deafening silence from the Obama team” suggested Obama is losing a battle of perceptions among Muslims that he may not realise has even begun.

Kudos to your post! The problem is other world leaders that are not friendly to the US will fill the power vacuum left opened by BO. You are correct, he doesn’t know what to say. He either needs a script from his frat boy speechwriter (Favreau) or his handlers.

Whenever he’s on the news I quickly change the channel. However, the few clips that I’ve seen, he’s posing as President and saying the obvious without adding anything new. What do we expect as a nation, when this man only spent 143 days as a Senator before he made the foolish decision to run for President?

I do the same. I feel like the kid in the “Emperor’s New Clothes.” I see a naked emperor, despite what all those around PEBO keep saying.
Hey, Michael Beschloss…if you’re going to claim Obama’s IQ is off the charts, don’t you think you ought to know what he IQ actually is?

typo – he should be his. Sorry.

ROFLMAO…My IQ is higher than Fraudbama’s. He’s no genius and he’s a FRAUD. And, by the way, having a high IQ really means nothing. It certainly doesn’t mean you have common sense…as we have seen with the Fraud already.

OIAF- I agree that a high IQ guarantees nothing.
And the fact that we have never heard how he actually did in college (unlike with Bush & Gore) makes me question the “genius label.”

Yeah, really, where ARE those pesky school records, medical records, etc.? HE’S A FRAUD. My father was CEO of a major corporation and always said he would rather hire the guy with the lower IQ but the most common sense for the job. Has anyone noticed Fraudbama’s lack of JUDGMENT? Especially with his mentors, friends, spiritual advisers and idiots like Taco Bill?
