Eric Holder–Driving Nails

Eric Holder did a superb job of putting to bed reservations I had that he was going to act like Alberto Gonzales when it comes to playing politics with the Department of Justice. His answers to tough questions today during his confirmation hearing are smart, concise, and to the point. God, how refreshing!! After listening to the prevarication and parsing of Gonzales and Judge Mukasey (none of those clowns could figure out whether or not waterboarding was torture), Holder was a cool ocean breeze sailing over hot sand.
No wonder some of the Republicans are nervous. I think it is highly likely that Holder will require the law to be followed once he takes the oath of office.
While Barack Obama correctly promised not to seek criminal penalties for policy differences, the effort of some Republicans to insist that issues such as torture and habeus corpus are mere policy differences is not likely to get any traction in this Administration. While I think that proposed Treasury Secretary Geithner is a boneheaded choice, Holder is terrific.
