Barack and Roberts Bungle the Oath, Obama’s First You Tube Moment as President [Update]

Well, that didn’t take long. Barack Obama and Supreme Court Justice Roberts mangled and shredded the oath of office. It looks like Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts forgot the words first. The blank look on Barack’s face was not reassuring. Both recovered and President Obama finished the oath.

So what did you think about the speech. It was pedestrian in general but he made a very good point that we are not going to let the fear of terrorism be an excuse for suspending the Constitution. That was very good.

So, do you agree with Asif Mandvi from the Daily Show?

So what did you think?

UPDATE:

Robert’s clearly screwed the pooch first. Here’s what he was supposed to say:

Each president recites the following oath, in accordance with Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

He put “faithfully” in the wrong place. Maybe Barack knew something when he voted against Roberts for the job of Chief Justice. Then again all Barack had to do was repeat the words. Too tough?

Did he get choked up? i was watching online, and the picture kind of pittered out at that moment. It seemed like he choked up or was super nervous?

His speech sounded like his other speeches.

Comment by sarainitaly | 2009-01-20 12:48:29

ok, i guess he didn’t choke up, just flubbed a little. Thanks for the vid!

Comment by Strawberrybitch | 2009-01-20 13:08:42

Yeah, he screwed up three measely lines. It’s not like he was asked to recite the Gettyburg Address from memory. All he had to do was repeat what he heard. I’m no historian but I don’t remember, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagen, Carter, or Ford botching this up. What a goof.

Comment by cynic | 2009-01-20 13:40:07

I don’t recall them being fed the wrong line to respond too, either. It was kinda like a groom at a wedding being handed the wrong line by the minister. “Do you, —, take this woman, —-, as your awfully wedded wife?”

Way to go, Justice Roberts!

Comment by obamaphobe | 2009-01-20 13:49:02

He wasn’t fed the wrong lines. He talked over the lines fed to him, then stalled for Roberts to repeat it, that is when Roberts re-read the line incorrectly.

Comment by Undercover Black Man | 2009-01-20 16:11:22

Wrong, chum. Roberts never did say the line correctly, which is “that I will faithfully execute…”

Comment by beebop | 2009-01-20 16:14:48

Maybe because he didn’t want to put barky on the spot to LIE in front of all of those nice folks !

Comment by trixta | 2009-01-20 22:28:42

Too bad the occasion wasn’t important enough for Obama to MEMORIZE the oath beforehand! They should have had the oath on a teleprompter. Will Letterman put Obama’s oath flubbing in his Presidents’ Greatest Moments segment?

Comment by WildChild | 2009-01-20 22:54:47

It’s bad when you need a teleprompter to take the oath of office (LOL) but for a stadium…

Obamaphobe—you have it exactly right. The narcissist in him couldn’t stand for the Chief Justice to be in charge for even a few seconds. He had to take over the giving of his own oath. He jumped in early, talking over as you say. I laughed out loud at Larry’s suggestion (in jest) that maybe Roberts was paying back 0 for voting against his confirmation, but it’s plain that 0 got the comedy of errors rolling, not Roberts.

Comment by noproblama | 2009-01-20 23:36:48

He wanted to get sworn in before the country woke up and realized he has no business being POTUS.

Chief Justice Roberts did flub the line. He even apologized afterwards:

FoxNews reports:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ_LsYuNy9s&feature=channel_page

And the constitution text along side Robert’s lead.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS7VIxRGJzQ

This is a non-issue, unless you believe Chief John Roberts should have rehearsed the line, after all, it is his duty to know the Constitution inside and out.

Comment by NoTrollZone | 2009-01-20 13:36:35

Well, I’m avoiding it all. Yuke. Phoooey. Phiifft! But who chose Roberts? I reckon the Obama did. Isn’t Roberts the guy who wouldn’t say that waterboarding was torture? Perhaps I’m confusing my men in black gowns. The messages the Selected Doofus is sending are all bad as far as I can stand to watch any of this farce.
So we’ve got a Supreme who can’t understand the definition of torture, a hole-y man who hates women and LGBT folk (oh and there must be more–bigots can never stop at just two groups of folk),
a goof taking the oath of office who can’t deliver
a soundbite without stepping in it… who could ask for anything more?
Oh help us, world. We’ve got another idjet in the WH.

Comment by Robin | 2009-01-20 14:00:24

It’s pretty much BEEN the tradition that the Chief Justice swears in the new Pres. since Pres. John Adams.

Obama voted against Roberts. 22 others voted against Roberts.

I believe it was an honest, yet embarassing mistake by Roberts.

Renquist did it 4 times:
January 20, 1989
George H. W. Bush

January 20, 1993
William J. Clinton

January 20, 1997
William J. Clinton

January 20, 2001
George W. Bush

January 20, 2005
George W. Bush

Gives him some practice and maybe Roberts will get it right…maybe.

Comment by SpaceCat | 2009-01-21 16:25:47

The Chief Justice swears in the pres. Period.

Only by tradition, SpaceCrud. There is no Constitutional requirement.

Comment by Undercover Black Man | 2009-01-20 13:08:04

The line is supposed to be “faithfully execute,” isn’t it? That’s where the Chief Justice flubbed, sticking the “faithfully” onto the end of the stanza. I guess Obama had to decide whether to recite the line correctly (no doubt he had memorized it) or whether to say it like Robert said it.

Oh well. Here’s hoping that’ll be the most embarrassing moment of President Obama’s term in office.

Too bad it didn’t go perfect.

Obama’s speech was a disappointment as well. Mediocre writing, not much on the delivery.

Comment by beebop | 2009-01-20 13:16:28

Mediocre writing, not much on the delivery.

And that’s his long suit, right? It’s going to be a freaking long four years … but the end is in sight if you keep your wits about you and start to volunteer your time astutely. Remove Nancy Pelosi. Replace Franks. Make sure that the culprits get their karma early.

Comment by AMERICA R.I.P. | 2009-01-20 13:18:57

No way I watch that crap. Not even a clip of Obozo bungling it. You are right beebop. Tomorrow the first order of business for ALL OF US should be to get rid of Pelosi, Franks, Reid, and all of the crooks who subjected us to this fraud. And we should start pushing for the GOP to pick the RIGHT candidate for 2012, just in case Obozo makes it for the whole four years. The party’s over. The crooks won. Now we have to do our best at damage control with our elected officials and future candidates.

Comment by Seattle Moss | 2009-01-20 23:53:03

UBM,
I’m pleased with your honesty about Obama’s speech.
The speech was very flat and probably a disappointment to most AA that thought he might invoke MLK.
I thought Warren’s invocation was the best moment of the event.

Comment by Undercover Black Man | 2009-01-21 01:12:29

Thanks, Seattle Moss. Part of me wonders whether Obama decided to write this speech himself, for history’s sake, rather than to trust his professional speechwriters. I don’t know how else to explain some of the inelegant language.

I missed Warren’s invocation… after all that hype. I’ll try to catch it on YouTube.

But I thought Rev. Lowery struck an off note with his racialized benediction, with its “blame whitey” overtones that seemed 40 years out of date.

But old dude is, like, 87 years old… so I’ll cut him a little bit of slack.

Comment by Patrick Henry | 2009-01-21 01:21:23

They were saying that Obama spent two days with a 28 year old femal

Comment by Seattle Moss | 2009-01-21 01:32:51

UBM,
I probably would cut the old guy some slack too.
However, we just elected a black man and to say that whites need to make right when clearly things are going in the right direction is a slap in the face and an opening for the far right.
Warren was just warm and honest with his thoughts and as a man of faith he really teared me up with his outreach to all Americans.

Comment by Undercover Black Man | 2009-01-21 01:37:30

“… a slap in the face and an opening for the far right.”

Correct. On both counts.

Comment by Seattle Moss | 2009-01-21 01:44:28

UBM,
I bet you could have written a much better speech than Obama.
I heard the entire inauguration in the car today and thought Obama sounded good..
However, when reviewing it later and seeing it over and over I thought it kind of lame.
Especially the part where he ended the sentence about the challenges we face with the word “Met”

Comment by andrew191 | 2009-01-21 03:06:59

Hey UBM, perhaps you’ll be another one that can recognize another one of Obama’s obvious plagiaristic infractions. All day since the speach, one of the most replayed sentences was “We must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin to rebuild this country again” That sounded very familiar to me. In fact, it made me want to continue singing the song he stole it from.

In the song “Pick Myself Up”, on the album “The Toughest”, by Peter Tosh in collaboration with Mick Jagger, here are some lyrics; “I’m going to pick myself up, dust myself off, and start all over again”. Coincidence?

At least this tells me that Obama likes Reggae, there may yet be hope for him. I’m also somewhat relieved that he is probably not a Muslim. HE’S A RASTAFARIAN!! Pas me a spleef mon!

I agree with Seattle Moss when he quite correctly states that you could have written a much better speech. Of course that’s not saying much, because a chimpanzee falling bass akwards onto a keyboard could have had equal success.

80% of the speach was created by slight alterations of words and thoughts that I’ve heard or read elswhere, phrases that we call cliche’s. He’s an empty clod!

Comment by Undercover Black Man | 2009-01-21 04:08:56

Yeah, Andrew… it’s a reggae song. You prat.

What, white folks done forgot all about Jerome Kern? “Pick Yourself Up” is a popular tune from the ’30s. It’s been recorded by Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Anita O’Day, Ella Fitzgerald and many others.

Why the hell it was quoted in a presidential inauguration speech, I couldn’t tell you. Although I’m willing to resort to “enhanced interrogation techniques” to find out.

It’s the worst speech Obama’s ever given… and I wanna know why!

Comment by andrew191 | 2009-01-21 11:19:01

It’s the worst speach he’s ever given because it may be the first one he has ever written.

And yes, I know it’s an old song, I was simply amused at the thought of Obama in dreadlocks sucking on a giant spleefer, so I chose the Reggae version I had handy. Prat?

Again, the speech was a mish-mash of cliche’s rather awkwardly thrown together. I can’t imagine why anyone could have thought Obama was capable of anything more eloquent.

Comment by trixta | 2009-01-20 23:01:00

Obama’s “clouds and storms” vs Clinton’s “Bridge to the 21st Century” — even in imagery Clinton was more grounded.

This is an interesting speech. Maybe even a revealing one. Obama sounds the most liberal on issues where he’s least likely to do anything, such as finding something to replace oil all of a sudden. And on fake issues, like “world peace” and “free hugs for poor people in foreign lands” or whatever. He sounds the most conservative, sometimes even neoconnish, on issues of substance. Let’s hope he governs like he speaks.

-entire speech was average, given with too much oratory.
-did not evoke Lincoln, FDR (esp. given the economy) as expected, instead went all the way back to founding of the nation and Washington.
-gave indirect assurances to the military, mindful that 6/10 have unfavorable judgment of him.

Comment by Ellen | 2009-01-21 02:26:00

Roberts said it wrong - obama stopped seemingly confused as to whether he should repeat the wrong phrase or say it right. roberts repeated it wrong again (although he tried to say it right) and Obama repeated the phrase with words still in the wrong order. I did listen Larry.

by the way, where are the whitey tapes??????

…he made a very good point that we are not going to let the fear of terrorism be an excuse for suspending the Constitution.

And yet, he voted for FISA. As always, his actions don’t back up his words.

Comment by beebop | 2009-01-20 12:50:49

As if his actions ever backed up his words … What is it Unca Jerry said … typical politician. Move along. Same old same old. Nothing hopey or changey here to see. Don’t expect any heavy lifting from the guy in the suit. Just like the one flying home to Dallas.

Where’s the birth certificate, Barack?

Comment by oowawa | 2009-01-20 14:34:30

Then we’ll hold his feet to the fire

First we have to find his feet. So far, media hype has held him suspended several meters off the ground, and his feet are nowhere in sight. At the top of his form there is a halo, then his noble visage, chin elevated slightly, then his manly athletic torso, and then, well, he just kind of fades off after that. No feet.

Actually i thought the moment when he forgot the oath was the geniue moment of this whole election season. Obama was struck by the awesome moment and what was about to happen…and he was humbled. He scored some points with me.

God Bless him and our great country.

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2009-01-20 12:49:05

He’s not humbled. He’s all choked up because his narcissistic ego finally got what it wanted - POWER.

Comment by UKforDems | 2009-01-20 13:12:17

This is what the Obama Presidency means.

“For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.”

Comment by Buzz Latte LaRue | 2009-01-20 12:50:35

Humbled? Hardly.

More like let’s get this over with so I can go to my pretend kingdom where I declare myself Emperor of all I see.

He was struck by the awesome moment? To the point where he could not recite the well known, hopefully well rehearsed words?

What happens when he is struck by the awesomeness of having to make the various presidential decisions that will come his way? Will he stumble and look terrified - sorry look struck by the awesome moment - at these times?

The love of this guy boggles my mind. He could fart on stage and people would cheer. This is actually one of my biggest problems with him.

I dislike cult leaders and don’t want one running the country.

Comment by Evolve and Learn | 2009-01-20 14:03:54

It is not an excuse.
You know, I now realize that logic is gone from the people who support/workship Obama and for the people who dislike/hate Obama. I count myself in the seemingly small minority who can take their emotions out of this and look at Obama, as well as any other politican as just that a politican. I am sure Bill and Hillary did just as much dirty unhanded stuff to get the presidency. The only difference might be that Bill and Hillary’s ascend was twice as hard because they did not have the media and the demos supporting/worshipping them.

Believe it or not Obama is not a MONSTER, or an alien, he is a man with a very large ego who did what he had to do to become president, right or wrong - like ALL presidents before him. Unfortunatley Obama is not special in that regard.

Our (American’s) jobs should not and must not change over the next four years or over the next 100 years, is to hold ANY politican —yell including the one you like—Accountable.

A president should never have your benefit of the doubt, that is too much power.

Very cliched speech. Very weak, though I wonder what he is saying to the Muslim world. (Reading between the lines.) Can’t think of a single line that will be quoted in history, but perhaps I expected more. If I were a political cartoonist, I would quick get on the Barry no teleprompter for the oath of office thing and get that out there.

Overall, I think Michelle looks petrified today. And he has some new wrinkles at the side of his face, or at least they are much more prominent.

What is up with the Hillary appt? Didn’t look like he went out of his way to greet her? How much disrespect is she supposed to take from him? I don’t think the Jill Biden thing was any accident.

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-01-20 13:49:40

Maybe it was the angle of the camera (C-Span is what we watched) but it looked like Pres. Obama greeted Bill Clinton but ignored Hillary … and looked like Bill was nudging Hillary forward but Pres. Obama seemed to be looking above her head (ok, LOL, we all can do that but it looked like he snubbed her again.. the way he did at the State of the Union last year). Did I imagine this or did anyone else catch this? I watched it on C-Span with my 92-year-old Mom and she thought the whole ceremony seemed “off” and “flat.” I didn’t share that view with her but it did seem sombre. Sorry to hear my Sen. Hillary’s nomination is being snarled up. Maybe this will be a good test of the Senate’s boast that they are filibuster-proof? Hope so. She needs to get to work, even if I am sad to be losing her in the Senate for NY.

Comment by Phantom Dick | 2009-01-20 14:02:31

Boy, it sometimes seems in their amateur way, they are desperately trying to game Hillary.

She is simply THAT MUCH OF A THREAT.

I hope she ignores it, and does her work as it needs to be done, understanding this frees her from the harness of those who would derail her work.

Has any SOS ever faced such formidable tasks?

And if all they have are the lil atwater moves, they don’t have anything at all, they can’t beat real talent, in the end.

SOS to America, and the whole world fears you — especially if you’re uniquely intelligent.

However — my tradition is to not watched this gross display.

As for THIS inauguration — just fog — but

It is very telling from the vid posted here (thanks Larry) that he flubbed his most important moment - taking the oath of office for POTUS.

My take on it is that it was a Freudian slip that he could NOT SAY THE WORDS!! He knows in his narcisstic heart of hearts that he lied, cheated and manipulated his way to this day.

My hope and continued prayer is that the talented and capable people that he has appointed (to save him and us) can actually be allowed to do their jobs. Thank God Hillary is SOS!

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-01-20 13:11:51

Yeah, I had the same thought. I thought the speech was sprinkled with these little partisan jabs. There were a lot of them. And anyone who can’t produce his real birth certificate who also wants to mention the words “The Constitution” in any sentence … well, that’s really silly. So, what’s he gonna do about Frank and Dodd, the fiddlers who played while Fannie and Freddie burned down the nation’s treasure? He can do lots, I would think, given they are Democrats. I’d like him to clean up our party and get the rats off the ship. Frank and Dodd need to go. Obama needs to acknowledge the Dems role in the mortgage crisis. Obama uses the words “transparency” and “accountability” a lot these days. Those things begin at home … in our Democratic Party which has been in charge of Congress for the last two years.

Comment by Peggy Sue | 2009-01-20 13:32:19

But one thing I didn’t like the way he said Christian then Muslim and the emphasis on the Jewish was a little uncomfortable and I am not even jewish. Don’t we have more jewish people than muslim in this country??? I’m so NOT surprised …. this won’t be his last blunder/gaffe/flubb whatever you wanna call it.

Comment by Janis | 2009-01-20 13:24:25

The speech was depressing in imagery: winter, bloody snow, deserted capital… Then lots of vague promises.

It also contained a major gaffe:

We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and nonbelievers. “

So if you are follow any other religious faith, like Native American spirituality, Wicca, Buddhism, Shinto, to name the ones that immediately spring to mind YOU are nonbelievers.

How could THAT get by the proofreading stage? Doesn’t bode well but watch. This pedestrian effort will be hailed as the greatest speech since, well, his LAST speech!

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-01-20 14:02:19

Yeah, again, I had the same reaction and I felt the speech was littered with stuff like this. I was just very puzzled that a master of speeches could not have made a more positive speech.

Comment by UKforDems | 2009-01-20 14:24:40

Read that remark from President Obama in context:

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

Comment by oowawa | 2009-01-20 17:58:28

because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation

This is a very badly written phrase. Swill is what pigs gulp down:

1: something suggestive of slop or garbage : refuse2 a: a semiliquid food for animals (as swine) composed of edible refuse mixed with water or skimmed or sour milk b: garbage

The Civil War was a tragic chapter in our nation’s history that cost more American lives than any other war. It had nothing to do with “swill.” Likewise, segregation was evil, but it was not “swill.” Moreover, you do not “taste” swill–you wolf it down in big gulps.

This is all just bad writing. Do yourself a favor Mr. President and fire Jon Favreau.

Comment by oowawa | 2009-01-21 10:56:15

Could not resist coming back and adding this: Favreau’s use of the word swill is sloppy writing. Sloppy writing does not belong in a presidential inaugural speech. Take your time and get it right!

Righto, UBM. According to fundamentalist Protestants, Catholics are not Christian. (Unfortunately, I was once exposed to a pathetic sermon along these lines.) Obama’s cleverly coded reference to “Christians” is just one more way to placate his Fundamentalist/Evangelical constituency.

There is even a line in it where the candidate for president is trying to think of a theme to run on & Lonesome Rose(Andy Griffith) says run on CHANGE the people always fall for that line.

Think of the message Dr. King would have given had he been at that podium today. It would have been straight from his soul rather than a old raggedy sng song political saying. Didn’t anyone edit these people? The only thing I thought when I saw John Lewis and the rest were what back stabbers they are.

Yes, I’d have liked the outfit sans sequins. The gloves were too short. They should have been seamless with the cuff of her coat. Overall though, it was 100% better than her usual. The petrified look is from the realization that she has to learn how to be dignified.

Comment by trixta | 2009-01-21 01:22:46

Yeah, the color was off — certainly the sequences were not appropriate for that time of day. I think a darker shade of gold or pink, or a lavender color would have made her skin color look radiant. I know winter white is all the rage, but her cream-colored gown looked like a wedding dress. She should have checked these colors and outfits through a video camera.

I thought Mrs. Biden looked pretty good!

I have to say that seeing some of our now former First Lady’s selections (Presidential China, etc.) on Greta’s show the other night really highlights her taste and excellent style. Quite rich and sophisticated. I wish we had been able to see more of that while she was in the WH. The way they handled themselves with grace and class throughout the transition has started the human side of their redemption for me. I’ve never liked them at all but now in contrast…

Another Republican ploy and garble, done by Roberts. At least he had the grace to shake Obama’s hand at the end. He clearly caused the confusion. Obama’s speech was very good, positive, even soaring. I was worried he would criticize Americans but instead he was laudatory. I agree with Vernon Jordan on CBS that there was no building to a crescendo. It was all crescendo. But I liked it.

Comment by beebop | 2009-01-20 16:05:11

Comment by Andrew P | 2009-01-20 17:18:29

No kidding. Not criticizing Americans? As one of the fifty-odd million citizens who did not vote for 0, I wasn’t thrilled to be told that the country had chosen hope over fear. That, as much as anything else, portends that 0 will continue to be the divisive figure he has chosen to be throughout his campaign. Which is the last thing we need in our president right now.

Comment by DAB | 2009-01-20 13:54:47

The speech contained a few too many gathering clouds and storms and storm clouds for me. It seems likely that it was meant to paint our situation in as bad a light as possible in order to buy him time and so that Obama can play Conquering Hero when the economy finally turns around in a couple of years (perhaps on its own). I was agree with another commenter that the line We chose Hope over fear by hiring him was a tad self-serving and a slap at McCain.

Still I am now overflowing with Hope. Hope that Obama actually knows what he’s doing. Hope that his ego will grow small and Hope that he will lose that oft-seen nose-up-in-the-air smugness. He certainly did seem to like his own speech a lot from his expression when he was done.

I did love the piece played by Yo-Yo Ma and Company, which was beautiful — that Shaker hymn always gets to me. The poem was also pretty good but it probably could have been read better. Of course, the highlight was the less-than-perfect oath of office — I mean, if he really were The Messiah, do you think that God would have let that happen? Just askin’……

Comment by Joy | 2009-01-20 15:21:18

AS a nation we are faced with two ongoing wars, an economy in the tank, and an erroding middle class. A bright happy life is wonderful speech would be false and set the wrong tone. I’ve had enought of Bush’s every thing is fine when things were going badly. We have tough times ahead and need to face them realistically which is what Obama said.

Comment by AMERICA R.I.P. | 2009-01-20 15:52:56

Is Michelle pregnant or in need of a tummy tuck, I have been watching her for the past week and her stomach does seem a bit high or fat, not sure maybe its the dresses she wear but something is not right there.

Her dress today, did not like it I thought she looked as if she was dressed for one of the evening balls, too much shiny, glittering stuff going on all at once.

Obama his face sure was a thousand words when he was walking in to take the oath, he was serious or worried it was the first time I have ever seen that kind of expression from him but he sure did not look happy and elated to be finally at his goal. It must be a awareness of the moment, he can no longer just give words he has to deliver now.

His speech not impressive, it started well but he lost me on the blood covered snow part as my mind started to drift off and wonder ok when well he stop, too much doom and gloom, and did not need the reminder of the days when blacks could not even buy a sandwich, but now a son is taking the oath of office.

As for FOX, Juan William and he tears for AA who were beaten by the whip was just about enough of the nonsense that I could take so at that point TV was shut off.

All men are created equal–except for those who are somebody else’s property? A minor flaw, that we’ve been working to correct for a long time now. America has always been a work in progress. That’s what’s so good about us.

I can’t find the place that people asked about this…But, yeah, it’s being considered to give MeChelle a SALARY. Can you IMAGINE? It doesn’t get any more stupid than THIS. No First Lady in history has EVER, EVER accepted a SALARY. Man, the Obamas can’t GET their hands out of our pockets.

For first lady, free work but no free time
By ANDIE COLLER
The Politico

…While the position carries no official duties, the president’s spouse has long been expected to serve as a highly visible goodwill ambassador for the nation, performing a wide range of ceremonial and quasi-diplomatic jobs. The work involved is not insubstantial: Although Hillary Rodham Clinton was accused during her presidential campaign of having inflated her policy efforts as first lady, she wasn’t just at home baking cookies, either.

Her 11,000-page schedule implies a fair amount of time and energy put in on behalf of her husband and the country.

Yet because they are presidential spouses, first ladies are expected to volunteer their assistance. So on Jan. 20, Michelle Obama will go from being a high-profile, highly compensated professional to serving as her husband’s full-time, unpaid … helpmeet? Resuming her previous work for the University of Chicago Hospitals would be difficult in her husband’s conflict-averse regime. But giving up her paycheck and re-envisioning herself in the role of hostess in chief will undoubtedly be an adjustment for the Harvard Law grad.

Without Barack Obama’s books, the Obamas’ 2006 tax returns show that Michelle Obama would have been the hands-down breadwinner in the household, bringing home $316,000, or nearly double Barack Obama’s Senate salary of $165,000. While Laura Bush, a former librarian, had not been employed for quite some time before she became first lady, Hillary Clinton also had the more lucrative job before her husband became president: In 1990, her income from the Rose Law Firm was more than $100,000; her husband’s salary as governor of Arkansas was $35,000, plus a public relations appropriation of $19,000.

NBC News, otherwise known as the Obama Channel, picked up the story and is planning a major report on the subject for their Nightly News program. They even have a poll question linked to the Politico story: Should the first lady be financially compensated? Vote here.

One of the commenters on that poll reminds us that the wives of our troops serving overseas sacrifice far more for their country and their family than any First Lady and they are not compensated.

Comment by Sonic Ninja Kitty | 2009-01-20 23:08:25

You hit on what really burns me about Michelle Obama. (In addition to her role in accepting pay for play, http://hillbuzz.wordpress.com/2009/01/17/michelle-obamas-adventures-in-chicago-pay-to-play-politics/ and her incessant negativity http://michelleobamasuicidewatch.blogspot.com/) I could care less about her clothing, but this talk of a salary–why?–because she “sacrifices” for us??? Every single other first lady in history spoke of the role as an HONOR. Does anyone in this administration know what that word means?

Even if all she cares about is money, holy cow, does she not realize the cash train they have already boarded just by being in this position? Michelle Obama truly shows her level of class with this issue: zero.

Comment by Ellen | 2009-01-21 02:40:59

SHE did NOT talk of a salary. this is a stupid report - are you people so DUMB you can’t tell a ’story’ from reality. No one is asking for a salary for Michelle. Please don’t use lies to enforce your hatred of Obama and his wife.

Comment by AMERICA R.I.P. | 2009-01-21 03:21:02

Ellen…I can post a few more articles about this. I can’t believe you BOTS deny this stuff when it’s black and white. I already posted ANOTHER article from CNN about it. How many times can you guys LIE?

Comment by Ellen | 2009-01-21 04:06:39

Please show me the articles where Michelle asked for or said anything about wanting or deserving a salary as first lady. Anyone can write these things - you expect me to take something form michelleobama pays to play chicago politics or hillbuz as truthful? you must be joking…those are total trash obama sites and you know it.
There is nothing about michelle saying she needed a salary OR anyone close to her seriously saying such things - if there is, please link to it.

So is Obama actually president if he didn’t say the exact words as required by the Constitution ?

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2009-01-20 18:26:01

Even if that were the case, he’d just say those weren’t the words he knew or some such rubbish.

Comment by Elizabeth | 2009-01-20 19:17:06

But isn’t stating your name in the first line customary for delivery of an oath ? It very possibly may not have been Obama’s rush or talk over that set these particular cards in motion.

Either Roberts flubbed on purpose as an attempted subversion of the new president or it happened spontaneously out of exhaustion, nervousness, etc.
And it is almost too glaring and high profile an error to chalk up to sheer emotion.

The legal fallout, if it ever comes to that, will be fascinating to watch.

Comment by Ellen | 2009-01-21 02:46:36

read your constitution - whoever gets the majority electoral votes (December vote) is automatically president of the united states at 12:00 noon eastern time on Jan 20th. NOTHING to do with the oath of office.

Comment by AMERICA R.I.P. | 2009-01-21 03:19:01

With all due respect, maybe you could read YOUR Constitution…Obama’s not eligible. I think that’s more important than arguing over the oath no offense.

Comment by EyesOpen | 2009-01-20 19:47:27

Shouldn’t the President be able to still recite the correct lines regardless - is he this easily lead astray? We’ve seen this before. In four years there is going to be something very clairvoyant about this little word tangle.

Comment by Sonic Ninja Kitty | 2009-01-20 22:41:00

I was a bit disappointed in both of them. The whole world was watching–you’d think they’d practice this together for more than 5 minutes (even that much would’ve helped!). Despite Roberts’ flub, Obama should have said the correct words. Oh well, now it’s his job to do these kinds of things the right way.

I was surprised at the flatness of the speech. This is ‘only’ a string of words, after all–not brain surgery! It was too past and doomy-gloomy oriented: I expected much better in terms of visions for the future.

And the Elizabeth Alexander poem was, sadly, truly awful. (Old Grumpy Guy needs to do a critique of this!)

All this plus the booing of Bush reduced the majesty of the event for me. Although I don’t like Obama, I did want the event to be a proud moment in front of the world.

Comment by athy | 2009-01-21 00:56:31

He put “faithfully” in the wrong place. Maybe Barack knew something when he voted against Roberts for the job of Chief Justice. Then again all Barack had to do was repeat the words. Too tough?

Larry,
You could be right, however I get the feeling that Barack Obama and Chief Justice Roberts ‘choked’ because they both know how Barack Obama won the election, and Chief Justice Roberts may have extrapolated from Barack Obama’s past what is yet to be with regards to the shredding of our Constitution-the backbone of our republic.

Both men had a problem with the word ‘faithfully’…

I just went to UTube & listened to Yo-Yo Ma, Itzak Perlman, Anthony McGill & Gabriela Montero again. Outstanding! Bravo! Beautiful! Tight technique & deeply moving. I like Michelle’s clothes, a bit of glitter at high noon to wake up the old W.A.S.P. crowd…Aretha’s hat was Church Lady cool as well, very architectural…Michelle changed into a beautiful suit for the luncheon & I thought she looked elegant, she’s giving a big venue to younger designers & that is change. Sasha & Malia’s outfits were a delight as well, I was surprised to hear they were J Crew. Laura Bush looked timeless & elegant however Michelle is 20 years younger than Laura & I think it’s fab that she plays in such a free spirit way with wardrobe, she’s a risk taker, I like that in fashion. If I wanted to get picky I’d suggest a Jackie O squared stacked heel when lots of walking or standing is in order rather than those skinny little 2″ scaled down pump heels. Elizabeth Alexander’s “Praise Song” presentation was drab beyond belief & the work itself only slightly better, an ode to the mundane with a ‘Dawning of the Age of Aquarius’ post scriptus pieced together ending.

Michelle…I don’t get the black widow dress. Very weird! Ominous to say the least.
I could not get warmed up to her green thing she wore today…Looks like

Comment by Ellen | 2009-01-21 02:52:13

Hillary has style and class?????? LOL!!!! Prior to her senate career, HRC had the WORST taste of anyone - it was a total joke, the way she dressed. god awful. not until she started with the pants suits (suggested by a stylist who was hired to dress her) and many purchased from an LA designer at approx $4000 per suit.

You may not like what Michelle wears - but to compare her to Hillary is a joke!

Comment by Seattle Moss | 2009-01-21 03:04:06

So you are saying that now Hillary has style
Like I said I love it!..I’m surprised it only cost $4000…..What ever it takes to look great!
I have some Armani’s that cost $7000

The point is that Michelle is deliberately placating to the down and out by wearing crappy dresses.
I would suggest she wears what compliments her body and not something just for political expediency.

Yuo filthy dirty scum. The President, a consitutional professor, knew the oath back to front, realised “Chief Justice” (read Republican Thug) got it wrong and gave him the chance to correct himself.

You people are filth. Bunch of bleeding vaginas.

[ADMINISTRATOR: Ben, what a representative for President Obama you are. He must be SO proud of you. You call us "filthy, dirty scum," yet yourself use the most vicious, women-hating* language. It's evident you are experiencing severe problems. I'm sure others have told you that already -- including people in "real life."

You're gone from here, but I'm actually more worried about the other people in your life, especially ALL THE WOMEN in your REAL life.

And, frankly, it's strange to read such angry language when your candidate has succeeded in becoming president, and one would think you'd be joyful, and sharing that joy with like-minded people, not coming here and attacking us in the most ugly ways.

Damn! The msm and Obot blogs are wrong! Obama screwed up first by cutting off Roberts at the beginning. That probably threw Roberts off and made him forget the proper oath and it went downhill from there. The inauguration was more hysterical than historical.

Comment by truthtelling007 | 2009-01-21 08:06:22

Sorry, nice try, but no cigar.

John Robert’s gait in stating the oath and Barack’s opening response were not what caused the second stanza to be messed up. Robert’s has already commented on it, so if you want to argue about MSM and bots, don’t spin like them.

Robert’s indicated he messed up and apologized to Obama.

“Obama screwed up first by cutting off Roberts at the beginning. That probably threw Roberts off ”

Obama repeated what was said, no screw up there. Robert’s paused after “Barack Hussein Obama” and when Obama realized he went on with “do solemnly swear”, Obama repeated it precisely. Then Roberts inverted the phrasing of the oath regarding both “faithfully” being put at the end of the line and saying “execute the office of President to the United States”, when it is President OF The United States”

Now, I frankly don’t care about the misstatements. Because both have never done this, but for you to put this on one person and alleviate the burden to the other, blaming Obama for Roberts forgiving,…sorry, that’s absurd. Roberts is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. If he’s that short of attention himself, then let it be said for what it is. If it were me, as Roberts, it would have been my mix up and it would have been responsible of me to admit that I misspoke the line. That is the nature of being ‘responsible’.

Hmmm Now chaps simply going through the majority of these thread comments indicates exactly the kind of problems and difficulties facing the whole world in general. We will never get rid of the past, move forward and prosper, both as a people (human beings) and a planet with negative, bigoted and obviously outdated views and opinions.. Bottom line? Barack Hussein Obama is now the elected President of the USA and leader of the “free world” for likely the next 8 years. Whether you agree or not, his skin colour will not change that fact, neither will the “flubbing” of the presidential oath.. Leave that nonsense behind and see the light folks.. It’s better that way
