My Problem with the Inauguration Frenzy and a Prescription Going Forward

Sunday night I had occasion to watch the HBO pre-Inauguration concert entitled “We Are One.” I was moved by the pomp and circumstance staged before the Lincoln Memorial, the dress guard and the choirs; to see Mary J. Blige so proud, singing “Lean On Me” and the one and only Stevie Wonder singing “Higher Ground,” a song that has resonated with me for 35 years. I watched Bono and Sam Jackson and Denzel and Beyonce and Latifah and Jack Black and Rosario Dawson and others making their statements and singing – so happy for the change to come on Tuesday.

While I did not want to deprive anyone of their joy in crossing this barrier, I cried as I realized that I couldn’t help but wish for them to have a better, more sincere hero upon whom to bestow the honor of this historic election.

For the record, I always felt NoQuarter took Barack Obama to task because we truly had and have deep problems with his tactics, his competence and his veracity; not just because we were trying to get our gal or the other guy elected.

While I too have deep respect for the office of the President, and a deep love of our country, I cannot pretend that suddenly giving him carte blanche on the day of his inauguration, declaring a new dawn and a new day, is the way to go.

I certainly respect those who wish to do so. Due to the crisis in which we find ourselves as a nation, there is an urgent sense that we need to pull together to get through this, to say the least. However, having stated that, our current situation smacks of what Naomi Klein talks about in her book “Shock Doctrine.”

She writes very effectively about how the powers that be, and we now know that includes Democrats as well as Republicans, set up a crisis situation, mire Americans in fear, so that out of our fear, we have no choice but to “pull together” and do what those in authority tell us we “have to do.” They count on us getting tired, giving up and going home. Or that we will be too overwhelmed by our current circumstances to offer any other solution.

In this inaugural festival, in the interest of huddling together to stay warm, we are now, however unintentionally, giving President Obama a pass on the entire last year. I am sorry, but I cannot.

Last year, women got kicked in the teeth by the media and the Democratic party, as well as certain male candidates. I feel like an abused wife who was slapped around every day and everybody else saw it and now a lot of people out there are pretending it didn’t happen, for the good of the country.

I am not a fan of revisionist history, nor do I believe the ends justify the means.

I wish to remind everyone that we are always in some sort of crisis. If it ain’t 9/11, it’s Katrina, or Iraq, or Afghanistan, or the markets, or Israel or the housing bubble and on and on. Let’s use George Bush as a cautionary tale.

Please remember 9/11, when a fairly new President, already waning in the polls, suddenly gained a 90% popularity due to this horrible crisis, which he used to take us into Iraq — and screw us with it. And he recklessly squandered the world’s good will toward us to the bargain.

There is always a good reason to “pull together” so we can “survive” but in the process, we back off of holding people’s feet to the fire for putting us in that crisis in the first place.

Until we stop that vicious cycle, it will continue to repeat itself and our votes will mean less and less and our rights will continually diminish.

In this fast food nation, we are bombarded by the next scandal and the next disaster to the extent that we can’t keep it all straight — and accountability tends to go out the window.

If we are not going to insist upon FEC investigations for President Obama’s questionable internet contributions, if over 2,000 instances of caucus fraud, egregious about-faces on critical policy positions such as FISA, along with sexism, and mixed messages to the gay community are now to be given a pass — well, forgive me, we can hold hands all we want but that will not improve our current lot as a nation. We are setting the stage for yet another President who suffers no consequences for his actions.

I respect that we are tired of the endless Bush bashing. However, if someone had bothered to take a closer look before he ever took office, we might not be in this mess today. We allowed the Supreme Court to pick our President. There should have been a full recount in Florida. The American people should have insisted upon it. That way, win or lose, the pall of “illegitimacy” would not be hanging over him and us to this day.

Further to this, while we have no choice but to move forward, I don’t wish to feel like I am being blackmailed by the current crisis into support for a disingenuous man. Watching the news lately, there is an “Inauguration Frenzy” – we have elected a “brand” more than a leader. And spending an obscene amount of money on this weeklong party during this horrid economic time is unconscionable to me. It feels irresponsible to take part in such a celebration no matter how I might wish otherwise.

NoQuarter has been one of the only safe places one can come to talk about this – and the need to vent has not dissipated. Just the other day, President Obama backed off of yet another promise – an executive order to reverse President Bush’s halt on stem cell research. Now he wants to leave it in the hands of Congress. Who knows how long that will take? It is another terrible blow and a backtrack on his campaign rhetoric.

I wish I could pretend President Obama is starting with a clean slate. But after two years of campaign promises which seem to be very elastic, to say the least, he is going to have to PROVE himself out from behind the eight ball. Not the other way around.

George Bush was given a lot of mulligans and look where we are now. While there is plenty of blame to go around for this in both parties, had we had genuine, effective, HONEST leadership, we might not be in this situation today. Those who ignore the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them.

Please. Let us not be guilty of this. While I always will love my country deeply and certainly support the office of the Presidency, this man does NOT get to start with a blank slate. I promise you, it is a gross error to offer him one. While I will never attack for attack’s sake, I will use prior ‘bad acts’ as a frame of reference if another one rears its head now that he has assumed office. Likewise, I will offer praise if it is warranted. I deeply wish for America’s success so I will wait patiently and for all our sakes, hold a slim hope that a pleasant surprise is possible.

I am grateful for the opportunity to voice this. And that I have become a more active citizen. For us to be successful as a people and to overcome our current situation, we need to be far more diligent, regardless of party, to holding everyone to a high standard; including ourselves as citizens of this great country. If we do not remain vocal and participate to change what we feel is unjust, if we do not stand up and shout from the highest hill, our leadership will assume our consent, and continue along their merry way. There must be accountability, from us as well as from our elected representatives. All of them. And bygones are not bygones.

I am likewise grateful that NoQuarter is a place to freely express dissent. A principle this country was founded on.

As always, great writing Ani. I will never forget that Obama rode to the presidency on the sexist bandwagon.

not that I don’t believe you but if true he’s more of a “say anything to get elected” PLAYA than I shuddered to imagine

Yep. We must not be silent. We are in grave danger right now. One of two things will happen: Obama’s bubble will pop or he will gain even more power through more propaganda and hype.

Alex Jones is on the air right now going on about Obama’s citizen corps. Really worth listening to:

Comment by socalannie | 2009-01-20 17:10:50

The citizen corps? Already? To me, thats one of the scariest things about Barky. I got a very unpleasant preview of what his “citizen corps” will be like last year on Huffnpuff & Daily Satan. Barkys young followers are rude, obnoxious, anti-social, and basically incapable of thinking for themselves. What do you get when you put young people like that in organized groups? You get gangs. Just what we need here. More groups of arrogant, stupid young people trying to dominate everyone else.

My kids homeschool group has a community service committee, so we are used to volunteer service in our area, and I can tell you, the people who run these programs (like packing essentials for homeless kids, food banks, etc) do not want “forced” volunteers. They don’t want teens bussed in from their schools & then running loose in their warehouses. They can’t trust them. When our group goes to these places (preteens, teens & parents), they give us instructions on what they want us to do & then leave us & get on with their day. They know us & trust us to respect their property.

Mandatory “volunteer” service is one of the worst ideas to come around in a long time. They have programs like this in Europe & my friends there have told me it causes lots of problems & that a lot of the teens that are supposed to be volunteering spend their time goofing off & getting into trouble; however, they get the same credit as those that take their chores seriously. I was hoping this terrible idea would wither on the vine, & not get implemented, but apparently Barky is obsessed with “organizing” his goon squads.

Beautifully put Ani. I do believe that Obama’s speech relied too heavily on the image of gathering storms so that he could set himself up as the Hero who will rescue us all from certain doom as well as buy him as much time as possible before he is judged.

I too also considered myself to be patriotic but find that every time that I try to like Obama a little, something happens to remind me to keep a clear head and not to be sucked into the vortex of popular opinion. Thank you to all who visit this site for keeping it real!

I am saddened and a bit frightened by what I see happening today. This idolization is dangerous, especially given the economic crisis we are in, and the executive power the office of President now holds, thanks to the efforts of George W. The fact that Obama has already rolled out “Obama for America 2.0″ with the aim of lobbying (coercing) local politicians to pass his agenda (whatever that may be), and his inordinately large number of policay “czars” I wonder what on earth he has planned that he needs so much firepower?

Comment by DAB | 2009-01-20 14:16:18

Yes this is unprecedented and very scary and one of the things I was thinking about in my previous post regarding how “something always happens” whenever I try to like Obama.

Yes, it is. Which is also why we are here, in this current situation. People idolizing and not dealing in reality, looking for an easy way out. We got Bush and now Obama because of that. It didn’t get better, it got worse.

Where will we go from here? Will they grow up and accept resposibility, or are we screwed permanently?

I agree with the Shock Doctrine warning. There’s good reason to stay on guard about this guy. I managed to watch the swearing in today, and it seemed fine, unremarkable though others with me were undully impressed. Maybe it’s just my training in international politics in college that gives me a different point of evaluating it. But now that I’m stuck listening to the commentary following, my ire is rising again. It’s so creepy to hear about his “brilliant campaign”, how we all need to “unite and be one”, and the rest. Sure it’s wonderful to have a black president, but I just wish other things were more important, like whether he is even competent. Colin Powell and the crowd were just too much for me.

Comment by BernieO | 2009-01-20 14:18:50

I kept thinking what the celebration would have been like if it had been Hillary with Barack as VP, which would have been much more reasonable. African Americans would still have been justly thrilled, but it would not come at the expense of fairness to women, who after all are the majority of the world’s population.

As for the media, this post explains a lot about what is wrong. Pay close attention to the list of guests.

A great article, Ani. Thank you. I didn’t forget how Bush became President and I certainly won’t forget how Obama became President. If somehow, Obama actually does something good for this country during the next four years, I’ll be surprised but I’ll give credit where credit it due. If he continues the downward spiral Bush set us on, 2012 is only four years away. In which case, hopefully, by 2010 there will be signs of a more worthier person to run for President!

Thank you Ani, for putting into words the emotions I am feeling today. The ambivalence I am feeling toward this false idol. I did not watch any of the pomp and circumstance. I couldn’t.

I did hear that he gave a shout out to the Muslim nations that was unprecedented in an inaugural address. I find this inappropriate and untimely. Today was supposed to be about the strength and resilency of the the great nation of the United States. Not handing an olive branch to countries that treat women like slaves. Where is the outrage?

Well you know what, our great nation and it’s citizens are strong and resilient and we survived 8 years of Bush and we will be watching Obama for the “hoodwinking” and we will survive another 4 years.

Much thanks to Larry Johnson for this fine site and to all the contributors.

God Bless America. Home of the Free.

You’re right Ani. If these things are not done, then what is to say that it will not happen again. I don’t want to go through this again. It is painful to feel that I couldn’t 100% celebrate this peaceful transfer of power. Such a beautiful thing but for me, the beauty of it was marred by the injustices of the campaign.

After reading several of NQ’s writers remarks on how to proceed under this new administration, I think we have to remember that it is good that we are all at varying stages on how we feel and are dealing with what has happened. I don’t think we want to be in a position where we all think alike or are made to feel that we should all be on the same page. That is why I have never joined either the Democratic or Republican party. I have never shared their beliefs 100% but I have always felt that in order to be a good Democrat or Republican, that I would be expected to.

Comment by Ani | 2009-01-20 14:54:37

I think it is very important for all of us to be able to express our feelings today — no matter what they may be. I have very mixed emotions myself and I am glad to see the comments here.

Most important is not that one takes one side or the other, but that each person stays involved, part of the debate and realizes that we each have an important voice and something valuable to contribute as citizens and to the forward movement in our country.

Staying ever mindful, I hope, whether wisely or foolishly, for better days ahead. Yet we do have to remember events exactly as they happened, to avoid repeating those mistakes.

To my reading your thread was suggesting it would be nice to give Obama a chance to be a good president – that we should be patriotic and tow the line while not towing the line excessively.

Obama will never be a good president in my opinion. He ran a sleezy race-baiting caucus busting cheating lying fixed primary campaign. The path he took to the presidency is relevant to me and accepting him endorses, or at least condones, his methods. I will never be OK with it.

I will give him all the respect I gave President Bush, and I will start immediately.

Comment by Scout | 2009-01-20 20:34:36

I’m with you. His path to the presidency is absolutely relevant, and will remain so.

As someone said on another site, I don’t Kumbaya with cheaters.

Power tends to corrupt, and he has already shown he is corruptible. Cheaters don’t become models of virtue when they obtain power.

We have been denied the presidency of Hillary Clinton, and our nation will suffer.

Well said Ani, thank you, and I agree with most of what you said.

However, I will not join in cheering on Hollywood for their acting and entertaining of Obama. I realized during this election, they really are in another world. Their nastiness, lies, name calling and accusations made me not like most of them. So I could care less if they want to “perform” in front of the cameras either because they were an early promoter, because they looked at symbolism only, or because he’s all that’s left and Hollywood backers supported him so it looks good in their made up world for the entertainment world.

I do appreciate Denzel’s way of staying out of the Hollywood “freak” show that we were witnessing, but, as we saw, they are not dealing from a reality perspective, they deal in CREATED/MANURFACTURED DRAMA and are quite shallow and that is what they were drawn to. They can put on any show they want.

But your are spot on with everything else. Thank you.

Comment by Ani | 2009-01-20 14:58:40

Thanks, and by the way, I was not celebrating Hollywood’s participation — just pointing out how certain performers may have felt a deep personal pride in the event for obvious reasons. We are all entitled to our humanity and while I don’t agree with some of the conclusions people reached or their behavior, not all Hollywood people were on a certain bandwagon so I am hesistant to paint them all with the same brush — I remember Hillary supporters were greatly pained by being labeled unjustly as low information, Archie Bunkers, shoulder pad feminists and the like.

We are not just one ‘anything.’ No group should be painted or labeled with one brush.

I appreciate your comments.

I respect you opinion, Ani. And I’m certainly not in favor of “wiping the slate clean” or forgetting the past. I deeply resent how the Democratic Party squandered the loyalty of many faithful Dems, including myself. I’ll never forgive them for that or the raw the sexism that was used in the primary and GE.

And Barack Obama deserves and gets no pass on any of this. But . . .

the reality now is that Barack Obama has assumed the office of the POTUS. And we’re going to have to deal with that, not simply by “pulling together,” but remaining focused and watchful. There are huge issues facing the country and world at large. I had and still have grave misgivings about Obama’s leadership capabilities. For all our sake’s, I hope he surprises me [in a good way]. My only measure of hope is the people he’s chosen for major positions within the administration. It may not be enough; I’m the first one to admit that.

Because of that we need to become the eye and ear, the voice that shouts beyond the Obama mantra. “Yes,” to the things we can support and “No” to the things we can’t and won’t.

This crazy honeymoon will end, and when Obama screws up even the press won’t be able to save him. I won’t feel sorry for him because he made this bed of adulation. But for my children and any grandchildren I may have I want the country to survive.

Our dissent is part of that but the dissent has to measured and pointed, aimed where it will have the greatest impact: holding this man’s feet to the flame.

He wanted the job and now he has it. And the public, those who did not vote for Obama, has a job, too: we don’t forget, we become the loyal opposition.

…Prescription for Going Forward

The new White House web site is up, and if this truly reflects Obama and Biden’s position, nothing is going to change in our Israel/Palestine policy:

Israel

Ensure a Strong U.S.-Israel Partnership: Barack Obama and Joe Biden strongly support the U.S.-Israel relationship, and believe that our first and incontrovertible commitment in the Middle East must be to the security of Israel, America’s strongest ally in the region. They support this closeness, and have stated that the United States will never distance itself from Israel.

Support Israel’s Right to Self Defense: During the July 2006 Lebanon war, Barack Obama stood up strongly for Israel’s right to defend itself from Hezbollah raids and rocket attacks, cosponsoring a Senate resolution against Iran and Syria’s involvement in the war, and insisting that Israel should not be pressured into a ceasefire that did not deal with the threat of Hezbollah missiles. He and Joe Biden believe strongly in Israel’s right to protect its citizens.

Support Foreign Assistance to Israel: Barack Obama and Joe Biden have consistently supported foreign assistance to Israel. They defend and support the annual foreign aid package that involves both military and economic assistance to Israel and have advocated increased foreign aid budgets to ensure that these funding priorities are met. They have called for continuing U.S. cooperation with Israel in the development of missile defense systems.

I think Obama is probably bored already. After all, this is a man who has spent his entire career raising money and running for office. He’s never actually planted his feet and done a job before. Well … he’s got one now.

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2009-01-20 15:31:44

Nah, he’ll just play at being CEO and mereely issue orders since he already has his golden parachute. He’ll continue to wreck what’s left of the country from the Bush years, retire, and then the electorate will install yet another blithering boob in office to finish the job. I am not hopeful at all.

Comment by Lizzy | 2009-01-20 19:44:38

Why should he retire? He could continue running for twenty years if they overturn the term limit amendment. Think of all the graft and corruption he could grab during that time.

Perfectly said, Ani. I, too, do not want to deprive people of their joy, but “couldn’t help but wish for them to have a better, more sincere hero…” And it is nothing short of enabling when “women got kicked in the teeth…everybody else saw it and now a lot of people out there are pretending it didn’t happen…” But the best reason to not cave into the “blackmail” is because if the voting public had been more critical and involved, we might not be in the mess we are in today. Dissent, done constructively, is patriotic.

Ani, you are truly a gifted writer. I enjoy so much reading your work on this site. And yes, you are right about the ugliness of the past year and what transpired from it.

This morning, I read in one of the online news publications that Obama’s approval rating is 70%+. My reaction was WTF? He hasn’t done sh*t yet (excuse my French). What I dread going forward is the fact that Americans have become nonchalant about things that should give us pause; such as voter fraud, blatant sexism, intolerance and pure hatred towards those who don’t share the same viewpoints.
Times are tough economically so everyone is willing to overlook everything…and that is a dangerous road to be on.

I always felt Obama is a fraud. From his bs Selma story to the race card that he played “They are going to scare you with my name”. Time will show his true color and those who thought he is the messiah will be deeply disappointed.

Today a fraud placed his hand on Lincoln’s bible and swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States.

Why is he a fraud, because this same person on March 4, 2008 stood at a pulpit in the church where marchers gathered just before their march in Selma in 1965 and this person of no character, not worthy of any respect and pathological liar uttered his continual lie he published in 1995 in his book of Dreams of My Father.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdYByptC8mY

Any person black, white, yellow, red or green who stands in the house of God and lies blatently is someone who is as trustworthy as the lowest form of life know!

So do not expect his pledge to have any meaning what so ever because President Select Barack Obama has proven that he has no soul or compassion, only self indulgence and self greed!

Scary Indeed!..

“The Movement”

On July 2nd, 2008, Obama spoke in Colorado Springs and hit themes of national service, foreign policy, and national security. Obama stated

“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a ci vilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

Since 1993, he’s been organizing the cadre of his personal, civilian national security force — his “shadow army” — at fifteen fully-staffed and populated indoctrination centers.
Public Allies, modeled after Alinsky’s “people’s organizations,” is operating under the watchful eye of Michelle Obama and it has a ton of money — more than $75 million per year — and an impressive list of donors. Naturally, it also receives grants from federal, state and municipal sources. Its mission has been, and is, to produce “community organizers” — baby Obamas — and its process is replicable and repeatable — continually producing more apparatchiks in “the community,” where these people are perceived of as leaders. They answer to only one person — Obama.

During the campaign, Obama also ran, at the state level, a “national program for social change,” called “Camp Obama” — here is their sign-up page — you too can be a “Deputy Field Organizer.”

The Obama Campaign’s website promised that “you’ll get the kind of experience that Barack got as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago,” and “Camp Obama is your chance to step up and become a leader in “this movement”.”

These community organizers have constituencies that can be mobilized, at the touch of a button, into political actions — mobs in the streets — to influence public opinion and the political process — real visual stuff that Obama’s water-carriers in the media will broadcast 24/7.

In addition to these shock troops, Obama has a reserve of 13 million-plus in his personal database that he is actively expanding. This pool of Internet-savvy people can be used to promote or attack any issue. Obama can direct tens of thousands of emotional emails, phone calls and letters on any target.

Remember, in September, when Chicago radio station WGN-AM twice came under attack from the Obama Campaign for offering airtime to an author who was politically opposed to Obama. As the result of an “Obama Action Wire” alert to supporters, the Tribune-owned station was flooded with phone calls and e-mails about an hour before an Aug. 27 interview with Stanley Kurtz, a conservative writer who examined Obama’s ties to former 1960’s radical William Ayers.

The phone calls effectively shut the station down.

Never before has such a massive, organized political action force — independent from the federal government –existed. Obama’s New America -The Obama File.

Interesting stuff from Wikipedia on why the Hitler resistance movement wasn’t more successful:

The problem these groups faced, however, was what form resistance to Hitler could take in the face of the regime’s successive triumphs. They recognised that it was impossible to stage any kind of open political resistance. This was not, as is sometimes stated, because the repressive apparatus of the regime was so all-pervasive that public protest was impossible – as was shown when Catholics protested against the removal of crucifixes from Bavarian schools in 1941, and the regime backed down. Rather it was because of Hitler’s massive support among the German people. While resistance movements in the occupied countries could mobilise patriotic sentiment against the German occupiers, in Germany the resistance risked being seen as unpatriotic, particularly in wartime. Even many Army officers and officials who detested Hitler had a deep aversion to being involved in “subversive” or “treasonous” acts against the government.

As early as 1936 Oster and Gisevius came to the view that a regime so totally dominated by one man could only be brought down by eliminating that man – either by assassinating Hitler or by staging an Army coup against him. But it was a long time before any significant number of Germans came to accept this view. Many clung to the belief that Hitler could be persuaded to moderate his regime, or that some other more moderate figure could replace him. Others argued that Hitler was not to blame for the regime’s excesses, and that the removal of Heinrich Himmler and the reduction in the power of the SS was needed. Some oppositionists were devout Christians who disapproved of assassination as a matter of principle. Others, particularly the Army officers, felt bound by the personal oath of loyalty they had taken to Hitler in 1934.

Comment by Andrew P | 2009-01-20 17:41:25

I suspect that many of them also clung to the belief expressed in another comment that “Dissent, done constructively, is patriotic.” Sometimes dissent needs to be destructive to be truly patriotic.

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2009-01-20 17:54:36

This is why I think it is important that we dissenters speak up now and loudly. If they see the hype and propaganda is backfiring then they will be forced to tone it down and will be unable to push through their most draconian plans.

The worst thing to do right now is to give Obama a pass.

Comment by AMERICA R.I.P. | 2009-01-20 17:58:06

Why does anyone think it’s their BUSINESS if we feel like dissenting? My GOD this country was founded on dissent. I’m proud that I won’t take the abuse the Obamas and Dems heaped on me. Like Harp said…that’s like going on a date with your rapist.

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2009-01-20 18:04:48

What I meant was, if the government sees that the propaganda is backfiring, they’ll have to tone it down.

But yes, it is annoying that people are so intolerant of dissent. We wouldn’t have America if it were not for dissent and a rebellion against tyranny.

Comment by Annie Oakley | 2009-01-20 18:32:25

Well Andrew, I was trying to be sensitive to the writers here who have asked us to tone down our tone. The writers have suggested that criticism of Bush was too harsh, i.e., it hurt the nation as a whole. I’m entertaining the idea that they may have a point. Dissent, like any criticism, can be constructive or destructive.

“While Washington orgies in an obscene display of undeserved celebration, and Obama’s promise of “change” is ignited by the expenditure of 150 million dollars, Rome burns.

Who around Obama represents change? Who in this orgy has steadfastly, unwaveringly, and publically advocated for true change? Whose past actions can we look back to and see true respresentation and conviction in opposing these last eight years of treason, deception, domestic spying, politicization of our justice department, silencing of public dissent in “free speech zones”, torture, and the murder of over one million human beings in an illegal and misrepresented military adventure?

Here is what the words of “change” look like. Here is what the Ron Pauls, the Dennis Kuciniches, the Ralph Naders, the Cynthia McKinneys are saying. These are the words of change. And while the words of change are being silenced by media indifference, Washington celebrates the annointing of an imposter.”

The spectacle in Washington D.C. is truly testify to the danger that the American Republic is in danger caused by the abandonment of a loyal, responsible and committed citizenry, in favor of a universal mobocracy, cultivated by popular culture, and devoid of actual political knowledge. Subtract all the ballots motivated by ignorance, racism and fraud– and this election would never have concluded the way it did.

And that in truth is what this Inauguration is about a historic triumph of ignorance, no matter what the Lapdog Media or any of the Poodle Pundits say. It’s an Inauguration of Ignorance, a Festival of Fraud and a Reception of Racism. The only history being made here is the Fall of a Republic, into a phony populist monarchy.

I also believe, and hope I’m proven wrong, that this president will be given the glory, if there is any, that the competent people around him will have done the work for.

It’s truly dangerous to put someone in power that everyone is afraid to criticize because they’ll be racist.

He’s flip-flopped so often on FISA, Guantanamo, stem cell research, the pull-out of troops in Iraq, and on and on that he should be selling ping pong equipment.

here’s a snip -

“So America continues the transition from a citizenry to a people, that waits for government handouts and the comforts of a monarchy as spectacle, broadcast simultaneously on all channels. While Obama preps a cabinet slate, half of whom belong in jail, the media continues applauding loudly to drown out any criticism. And the public watches with glazed eyes.

The millions who will trudge to watch this “historic” triumph of style over substance, dishonest criminality over ethics, and anti-americanism over American, will get exactly what they expect. End of the World As We Know It is by REM…

But an appropriate They Might Be Giants song might be PARTICLE MAN

Particle man, particle man
Doing the things a particle can
Whats he like? its not important
Particle man

Is he a dot, or is he a speck?
When hes underwater does he get wet?
Or does the water get him instead?
Nobody knows, particle man

Triangle man, triangle man
Triangle man hates particle man
They have a fight, triangle wins
Triangle man

Universe man, universe man
Size of the entire universe man
Usually kind to smaller man
Universe man

Hes got a watch with a minute hand,
Millenium hand and an eon hand
When they meet its a happy land
Powerful man, universe man

Person man, person man
Hit on the head with a frying pan
Lives his life in a garbage can
Person man

Is he depressed or is he a mess?
Does he feel totally worthless?
Who came up with person man?
Degraded man, person man

Triangle man, triangle man
Triangle man hates person man
They have a fight, triangle wins
Triangle man

As for Barack, I know the dirty tactics he used and cannot forget. He is the OPPOSITE of all he espouses. His corrupt actions make him once and for all, a slimy hoodwinking bamboozler, skilled at the okey-doke.

Eight years of that idiot Bush. God help us – may this fraud not usher in the new error.

Well thank God she has the CLASS to ask for a PAYCHECK. Can you IMAGINE? It’s not enough that the evil witch and her husband don’t belong there, but because she gave up her salary she wants US to PAY HER for being “First Lady.” Over my DEAD BODY. What nerve that mess has. No First Lady has EVER asked for a PAYCHECK and the Obamas just keep wanting to spend our money while the economy tanks. She’s a disgrace to this country. And never will be “First Lady” never.

Is CNN Pushing Kids to Ask For a Salary for First Lady Michelle?

By Warner Todd Huston (Bio | Archive)
December 19, 2008 – 04:00 ET

**VIDEO below fold**

CNN has a segment that they call “CNN Student News” that is supposed to highlight the news of the day for the kiddie set. Pursuant to that, in a December 15 segment, CNN floats a question asking if Michelle Obama (or any First Lady) should get a government salary just for being First Lady?

But, what we really ended up with is a slight to those same students to whom CNN was ostensibly relating the news. No where in the report was there any talk of the Constitution in particular nor the law in general as the CNN anchor cajoled the kids into viewing with awe the “work” of the First Lady and in fostering in them a feeling that First Ladies should be paid for this “work.”

In fact, one interview during the segment even made happy talk of the fact that, during the Clinton administration, Hillary Clinton’s travel and causes forced a “moving public works project” wherever she went. There was no hint of the burden this posed on the places she visited and no sense that these expenditures were unfunded nor that such expenditures were never voted on by the people of the states she visited. The kids are left uninformed that this “moving public works” burden was forced upon taxpayers unawares.

CNN did not stress that a First Lady has no official role and no elected mandate to spend the public’s money on whatever cause she so chooses to expound upon — though a brief quote from Laura Bush that a First Lady “is not an office holder” was included at the end of the segment.

Apparently voting federal officials into office so that they may legally spend money from the public treasury is a concept that CNN doesn’t think kids need to know about.

Naturally we are treated to another claim of Michelle Obama being a “powerhouse in her own right” in emulation of Hillary’s once smartest-woman-in-the-world style of hagiography. The kids are asked why we shouldn’t pay the newest smartest woman in the world just for having said “I do” to her husband?

The final product here pushes the big government angle all the way and makes no mention of the proper role of federalism nor what it is that our federal government was created for. CNN just imagines that the government is a bottomless pit of money to be casually thrown around, now to even wives of federal officials.

What follows is the transcript of the video from which you can see that CNN spends little time properly informing the kids on what role (of better, the lack of one) that a First Lady has. If this “CNN Student News” program is supposed to be a teaching aid, it fails to inform. But it pushes a nice left agenda message, doesn’t it?

CNN Student News Transcript:

EXCERPT:

GEORGE RAMSAY, CNN STUDENT NEWS: Time for the Shoutout!

What is the United States first lady’s annual salary? Is it: A) $175,000, B) $97,000, C) $35,000 or D) Unpaid? You’ve got three seconds —

GO! There is no government pay for the U.S. first lady. That’s your answer and that’s your Shoutout!

Pay or Nay?

AZUZ: Before she was first lady, Laura Bush worked as a teacher and librarian. Former first lady Hillary Clinton was a lawyer. Betty Ford even a theatrical dancer! When they moved into the White House thought, they all left the professional world to take on a new role. Some folks question whether that position should be paid. Alina Cho examines the issue.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ALINA CHO, CNN REPORTER: She’ll make history as the nation’s first black first lady. But even before her husband’s historic win, Michelle Obama was a powerhouse in her own right: an Ivy League-educated lawyer with a six-figure salary. In a month, she’ll be moving into a new home and a new full time job, working for free.

IMO,Michelle Obama should receive pay ONLY IF…Barack Obama agrees to pay a fair salary to all the people that he is asking to sign up on his website to volunteer their services for free.

AND…the federal government should deduct from Michelle Obama’s GOVT SALARY any and all living expenses incurred by her mother, who I understand will be living in the White House with Barack and Michelle Obama and their two daughters.

Wonderful post Ani! For some reason I recalled an edition of The Daily Show when Jon Stewart had the actor Tim Robbins on as a guest months ago and the two were in agreement that it was important to have someone ’smart’ as president. By that they meant McCain was a mediocre intellect compared to the supposedly brilliant Obama. I immediately thought ‘Why do they believe that?’ Because Obama can read a teleprompter that makes him smart? And if you’ve ever seen the movie ‘Bob Roberts’ (which is a very Obama-like story) you’d be amazed that Robbins could have supported someone like Obambi.

You expressed here exactly how I am feeling. Great article as usual, Ani.

Here’s my belief: Something started the wrong way will eventually show its roots. We can all wait and support anything the O does that is good, but I am almost certain the way he got into office will eventually show up in how he runs the office. Right now I can only wait and watch.

Ani and friends you just sound like a bunch angry paranoid people. The same 100 people sitting around all day worrying about how Obama is going to sink the country. What a depressing bunch!

I have been visiting this website since the beginning, before it became so focused on Obama hatred. Reading about Larry’s view on terrorism is from time to time interesting and fairly valuable. I am open minded and I have read what you people have said about Obama on this site. I agree that you have pointed out a few things, which are not perfect with Obama, which is not surprising, but you have pointed out absolutely nothing of real substance. Nothing that really means anything. You generally sweat the small stuff.

The only real critize that anyone can really make about Obama is that he has relatively limited experience in the federal government (although he has been in government service for 11 years). However, I would say that although government experience is important it is not everything. There have been plenty of people that have gone directly to government leadership without any government experience whatsoever (Schwarzenegger, Corzine, etc.) and that many different kinds of life experience can make for good leaders.

Ani I am not sure I understand your point about Shock Doctrine? Are you saying that the only reason Obama got elected is because of a crisis. I disagree. He beat Hillary before the current economic crisis really became critical and the stage was set for the Democrats to win many years ago. Or are you saying that Obama is pushing the “need to pull together” because of the crisis? So what? I don’t think Naomi Klein’s definition of Shock Doctrine really fits what you are trying to say.

I understand you continue to think you were cheated by not getting Hillary elected. I disagree. I think she would have been a fine president, but she had her chance, she had all the cards and she blew it. Read this piece that shows some insight from her own people as to why she lost. http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=f7a4a380-c4a4-4f84-b653-f252e8569915 No one points out that there was some kind of sexist conspiracy that was the reason she lost or that it was all the caucus system. The only people you can blame for Hillary’s loss are the Democratic voters themselves, as not a high enough percentage of them voted for her, particularly given the primary system (she had her chance to take advantage of the caucus system herself in Texas, Washington and Nebraska). Hillary had no plan past Iowa to get to the number of delegates required. You just have sour grapes.

I am eager to read about all the great future tragedies ahead of us that you very smart people will point to about how Obama is ruining this country, but judging by your track record on this site you will likely either be wrong or your complaints will be so small and petty.

And if drinking the Kool Aid is about a new direction after 8 years of the worst president in history, then I gladly drink the Kool Aid for change from the degenerate Republican party. However, that does not mean that I too will not holding the president accountable or disagree with him from time to time. However, the difference between you and me is that I think that Obama is a smart and honorable guy, who’s view on policy is much closer to my own view and certainly closer than McCain’s view on policy. I am also willing to give the guy a chance to solve the problems of the country before I jump all over him with all the very small No Quarter stuff.

Fire away with the personal insults!

Actually, I take heart in knowing that it’s NOT just the same 100 people opposing Obama, because you Obots here keep forgetting that PUMAs are not the only people who are not fans of his.

I’ve seen a lot of people upset today and on mainstream news sites. It is not just the PUMAs anymore. It’s PUMAs, conservatives, conspiracy theorists, gays and lesbians, Ron Paul supporters, Nader supporters, a LOT of people.

As for your continued assertion there was no caucus fraud and Obama is a “good man,” you sound like the wife who turns a blind eye to her husband’s cheating. The gay and lesbian community is finally waking up to Obama and you probably will too someday, when he finally hits YOUR personal button.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, but this argument does not work. And if you are going to point to Schwarzenegger as an example of someone with no government experience who is a good leader — you a drawing on a very weak hand. CA is going to have to write IOUs to people at tax time. They are in devastated shape.

Further, there is no conspiracy theory about Hillary. The evidence was there for the DNC’s fix and the media lauding the inexperienced Obama while feeding the brilliant Hillary a crap sandwich daily. It was an illuson that she had all the cards. Clearly that was not the case. This contest ended basically in a tie with her ahead in the popular vote and him ahead in pledged delegates by a very small margin — this should have clearly been decided at a real convention — not a pre-fixed one.

But that is over with.

Next: Pelosi clearly wanted the economy as her “fall issue” and it was the club the DNC used to beat the Repubs with even though there is plenty of blame to go around on this issue — this is the shock doctrine.

Beyond that, we have O now. I hope he is able to surprise us all and succeed. I know Hillary will do very well as SoS because she is brilliant and an amazingly hard worker. We need all the help we can get.

By the way, it is not bitter to tell the truth. His campaign played the race card with impunity every day since January and he has changed his stance on more important policy than an athlete changes his socks. That is the truth. There is no conspiracy theory about it. It is well documented for those who bother to look.

Let us hope for all our sakes that he finds his sea legs.

It is truly unfair to try to practice revisionist history now and pretend the events of the last year did not unfold the way they did. That is not something I will permit without answer.

Beener – To what do you attribute your belief that 0bama has proven himself to be an ‘honorable guy’? I’m asking respectfully because for a while last year, I was sincerely evaluating each of the candidates independently and with an open mind.

It became so obvious that 0bama was a panderer, a woefully typical politician who frankly isn’t very good at lying – and he did it so often, I used to laugh at his gall thinking, ‘I can’t believe this guy thinks he can get away with this crap!’

Imagine my shock when it appeared no one else was paying attention and couldn’t see what was so blatantly in front of them. Then again, this was before I found NQ and used to watch (and believe in) the MSM who have never exhibited any shame at how obviously biased they have been and are.

So I am genuinely curious to know what you personally find so honorable about him.

Ani, I love your post and agree with every point you made. I don’t intend to stop protesting what the Democratic Party did this year, but for the first time in thirty years of political activism I feel things slipping away. I’ve never felt so many conflicting emotions. I love Aretha Franklin and her song brought tears to my eyes, John Lewis is a wonderful man and Civil Rights icon and I’m happy for him and others who have never dared to dream this would come to pass in their lifetime. Obama didn’t move me and I felt nothing when he spoke except anger and dread. I despise what he has done and I’m afraid of what he will or won’t do. He isn’t fit to be president, not ready for the job. Today is the party, but tomorrow the problems will still be there and Pres. Obama will still be Barack Obama, the man who voted present, flipped off a former first lady and senator, bought a house with the help of an influence peddler, lied and cheated his way into the oval office.
