The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Right up front, let me say I am having a bad knee day. I had plans to write another piece altogether, but best laid plans and all that. But, I do want to share this recent news: Iceland has elected the first lesbian world leader (despite the fact that EVERY freakin’ news source keeps using the word, “gay”). That’s some good news, though she is stepping in at a very difficult time.

Why is it that the coldest countries are the ones that seem to be the most forward thinking? Is it that they figure if you can find someone with whom to spend your time during the long, cold, winter months, more power to ya? Maybe they are just built to be more open minded and less judgmental. Whatever the case, once again, they are leading the world in the arena of GLBT rights. Good for them! And good for the world.

Here’s the story:

World Gets Its First Gay (sic) Leader: Former air hostess to be sworn in as Icelandic premier after economic collapse

The first government collapse of the global economic crisis is about to yield the world’s first openly-gay leader. Johanna Sigurdardottir, a former air hostess, is expected to be sworn in as Iceland’s Prime Minister by the end of the week.

Her moment in the international spotlight comes at the most horrendous moment in her nation’s recent history. As the global meltdown began, the collapse of Iceland’s grossly over-leveraged economy was followed smartly by the implosion of its banks and currency. Now its government has gone the same way, the first to succumb to the backwash from the crisis.

Ms Sigurdardottir’s party, the Social Democrat Alliance, was asked to form a new government but its leader is taking a leave of absence to recover from treatment for a benign tumour. And so, “Saint Johanna”, as she has come to be known, has been propelled from the social affairs ministry – which she has presided over for a decade – to take centre stage in a choice hailed as “unexpected but brilliant”.

The 66-year-old politician lives with her partner, Jonina Leosdottir, a journalist and playwright. The couple were joined in a civil ceremony in 2002. Don’t expect them to show up togetherfor photocalls, however – that’s not the Icelandic way. Though she is famous across the island, having been a top politician for years, her lesbian union was no big deal in this calmly progressive nation of only 300,000 people.

“Johanna is a very private person,” said an Icelandic government source. “A lot of people didn’t even know she was gay. When they learn about it people tend to shrug and say, ‘Oh’. That’s not to say they are not interested; they are interested in who she’s living with – but no more so than if she was a man living with a woman.”

Ms Sigurdardottir has two grown-up sons. She entered politics via the labour movement, was first elected to parliament in 1978 and was given her first ministerial office in 1987. She will be Prime Minister of a minority caretaker government composed of her Social Democratic Alliance and the Left-Greens, with outside support. It is only expected to hold office for two or three months, until fresh elections are called.

“In opinion polls Johanna has repeatedly been chosen as the most popular politician in Iceland,” said the government source. “She is a good choice, because one of the problems the government is facing is lack of trust. Getting Johanna to become Prime Minister was a way of saying trust is an issue. Politicians want a fresh mandate from the electorate and, before they get it, they need to rebuild trust. Choosing Johanna is a way of saying, ‘Let’s bridge this gap, let’s have peace to be able to implement the emergency measures’.”

Geir Haarde, the former prime minister, endured months of angry protests over his poor handling of the economy; demonstrators pelted his car with eggs and police were forced to use tear gas on the streets for the first time in 50 years. Compare that to a poll in November that gave Ms Sigurdardottir a 73 per cent approval rating, she was the only minister to improve on the previous year’s score.

“She is often described as the only politician who really cares about the little guy,” wrote Icelandic journalist Iris Erlingsdottir in a blog this week.

She did stand for the leadership of her party back in 1994 and lost badly, but in her concession speech she predicted “my time will come”. And some 15 years later, it truly has.

Congratulations, Prime Minister Elect Sigurdardottir! I wish you great success in your new position.

Now for the bad. Remember this woman, Samantha Power? Here’s a little reminder for you (along with more hooey from Obama on the Iraq War, and more negative crapola from people on his staff):

Wanna guess who is about to become Obama’s Senior Policy Adviser? You got it - Samantha Powers (H/T to Andy). Oh, that cannot possibly make Hillary Clinton’s job any more difficult. Just like making UN Ambassador Susan Rice’s position equal to Hillary’s won’t make her job as Secretary of State any harder.

Show of hands - how many of you just KNEW this was going to happen?? Yeah, exactly.

Obama will always find a way to hamstring Clinton. And insult her. We have Rice competing with her, a woman who insulted her on an international stage, and don’t forget Obama’s boy, Favreau, also insulting her on an international stage. I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so! Good thing Clinton is a tough, smart woman. She’s going to have to be to accomplish anything with people like that around her (oh, and let’s not forget how much OBAMA insulted her throughout the campaign - the number is legion). Just shaking my head at all of this…

Like I said, bad knee day, so The Ugly will have to wait. I’ll give you a hint, though. It has to do with Prop 8. And it is truly ugly. So for today, I’ll end on a good note: Congratulations again, Prime Minister Elect! Well done!

Right up front, let me say I am having a bad knee day.

I’m sorry to hear of your pain, I don’t even have bad knees, and mine feel blown out, today, for some strange reason.

And about Power?

Obama has hired some very questionable advisers, in conjunction with the point Suusan made earlier in regard to Obama not really leading, but enabling, a flawed budget, I’m not surprised. He seems to need a level of security, and comfort around him, “yes people,” IOW, much like Bush.

And bad hiring decisions lead to bad outcomes, no matter who you are, yes, even if you’re the President.

Much like Bush.

Sorry, it should be “Susan,” and strike that comma splice.

My bad.

I knew Iceland was a “cool” place (couldn’t resist), but it is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cool now!
Congrats to women everywhere….lesbian, straight, black, white, red, yellow, brown.
Wish I lived in a country HALF that cool.

Of course the media will continue to push her ONLY accomplishment, that being ‘GAY”. When she dies the first line of the obit will read…you guessed it!
Sigh…

Amy, hope your knees feel better….

Wow…congratulations to Johanna Sigurdardottir. She sounds like she is very capable.

I’m not suprised about SP….like attracts like. O has no respect or character and so far neither does most everyone working w him. That’s just one more person to help bury him.

Also take care of your knee Amy! If you live in the Northeast (I think you do) good time to stay inside and rest.

Or don’t, inasmuch as you have nothing.

By way of reminder, the resignation of Samantha from the Obama campaign was supposed to indicate some sort of sexism on Obama’s part, or was it the appelation of “monster” that she gave to Hillary that was supposed to indicate some sort of sexism on Obama’s part?

To be perfectly honest, I can’t keep up with your wambulance chase, so if you can spare the time, please fill me in. Am I supposed to like or dislike Samantha?

Hey V,
Although I’m certain you are being deliberately obtuse (and get out a friggin dictionary if you don’t understand any of this), I’ll give it a shot, and see if I can get it through your admitted “not very bright” head …

Obama has now hired onto his staff a woman who went way off the reservation in her remarks about Hillary during the campaign. How would YOU like it if your boss took on as an advisor someone who had called YOU a monster and said you would stoop to any low to get what you wanted.

OR, if as I suspect you are still in school and have never had the joy of experiencing office politics, imagine that your BFF now has a new BFF that has spread all sorts of lies about you and called you names in public, like on their Myspace page! Is that in language you can understand??

So, Obama now has his BFF Susan back in his favorite five circle, giving him advice on foreign policy, which will filter down to the tasks and directions that Hillary is given to carry out. And even better, Hillary will have to travel with this woman on diplomatic missions. Yippee, how fun is that going to be!

Get it? Simple enough for you?

Comment by V | 2009-01-30 21:33:31

Remarks made in the heat of a primary campaign don’t really mean much. If this is the point that Amy is making, all I can say is, my God, how can you be so naive?

I mean, you’re kidding, right? Samantha and Hillary are adults, and aren’t really the imagined middle-school rivalry that is clearly driving your wambulance.

Get over it, and grow up.

They do to people who actually understand English. That you are incapable of understanding polysyllabic words is your problem and not ours.

That One lied during the primary campaign. Is there any part of “lie” which you fail to grasp?

As for “getting over it”. I am over it and buffoons like you. The second part you should direct at yourself, snookums.

Cold weather — wet cold (rain) — knees just don’t like that sort of weather.

Iceland must not have right wing wack-o for the religious insane.

I’m sorry that Clinton took that job — I can’t imagine how it will turn out well. 0zero wants to see her fail — he’s a passive aggressive — which is another way of saying he is a sneaky Bas*ard.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-01-30 15:26:45

Actually, I live down South (though I lived in the Northeast for a while). I have bad knees anyway, but just had some major surgery on one of them - hence the bad knee day thing! :-)

And I’m sorry Clinton took the job, too. If she is allowed, she can be phenomenal, but given the other players (Rice, Powers, Obama), I am not holding my breath.

Comment by Northwest rain | 2009-01-30 15:36:24

In the South if the temps drop below 70 — everyone starts complaining about how cold it is.

Meanwhile up in the frozen north after days of below freezing weather — 40 degree days feel almost HOT — IF the sun comes out.

Most Snowbirds have migrated south already - says NW rain — jealously.

Samantha Powers — 0zero throws some of his followers under the bus — but is loyal to others who SHOULD be under the bus.

“And I’m sorry Clinton took the job, too. If she is allowed, she can be phenomenal, but given the other players (Rice, Powers, Obama), I am not holding my breath.”
How true. I feel she’s only there as the scapegoat when it turns to dung. And it will.
VOLDEMORT’s never been truthful, so to assume that there is some silver lining to any of this is just denial.

Comment by Sonic Ninja Kitty | 2009-01-30 17:18:56

I am glad Hillary took the job–the more they pile on her, the more her grace under pressure shines through! We really have so much more to admire. That horrible Power is a total pointy-headed know-it-all but Hillary is entirely capable of handling her.

I love seeing people who started out in life just doing their thing (like airline hostessing or running a fishing business) and then find their calling in politics. These are people with real world connections. Go PME Sigurdardottir!

(Hope you feel better, Amy! Be patient–a knee puts up with lots of abuses, so give back with a little time :) )

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-01-30 17:43:10

Thanks, Sonic! That’s a good perspective, and wholly accurate when referring to Hillary!

I know - isn’t is cool that the PME was just a regular person who found her calling? Neat!

Oh, I know - I have had problems with my knees for years now, but I admit, I do get impatient. Thanks for the reminder to be gentle!

And NW Rain, it is FREEZING where I am now - 55 degrees, brrrrrrrr!!!!!! :-D

Rev. Amy, take care of that knee; all my joints are not happy tonight. We are having some very cold weather here in TN, which is ticking my RA off.

Good for Iceland, and perhaps as they are an older country, they have survived many of their own moments of bad judgement and finally realize, it will always be the best person for the job.

Elevating the knee?

Take Good Care of you

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-01-30 20:28:02

Hey, Katmoon! I haven’t “seen” you around recently. I hope you are okay, though I am sorry the weather in your neck of the woods is kicking up your RA (and REALLY sorry to hear you have RA. Yikes.).

Oh, yes - along with doing over 6 hrs a day in a repetitive motion machine. Good times!

Yes, amazing concept, isn’t it? Electing the best person for the job? Wow. Good for Iceland for actually doing that!

Comment by Katmoon | 2009-01-30 20:53:55

I am alright. back to school, last semester before transfer. I am so glad I went back. I had to stop outright at my senior year, a long time ago, when my husband was killed. The school would not let me take a sabbatical, and I was also forced to continue paying on my student loans, although, the funds to pay for them no longer existed. No will, married 3 months, and a co-tenancy agreement with his ex, found my single mom fanny out on the street.
Fast forward 15 years later, (almost done paying off the loan), I still could not stand the fact I had not finished what I had started. Things changed, I was a surgical RN, hiring contingent on graduation, but allowed to work in the OR during the last two years of school. You would have thought with the shortage in nursing, somehow, someway, the school would have been able to at least give me some time off. Yet, as we know, sometimes events occur in which we have no understanding in the moment, yet much later there seems to be peace with having moved on.
I am in a paralegal/political science program(with 184 full semester units), excited about graduating at the A.S., level and moving on to the B.S./B.A. I used to feel embarrassed to admit that, I had academic shame, but no more. I am proud that I continued, even though I was a bit afraid, and very unsure of my abilities. Going back has moved me to a place of understanding about myself that I didn’t have before, this was for me, not for the degree, not for the job or the money, but for me. When I was a little girl, I told one of my teachers I wanted to be a lawyer, and he said I would probably make a good secretary one day, but girls just weren’t smart enough to be lawyers. I believed him, I believed those lines so often, until I was able to make contact with my father again, and he helped me realize what lies were being told and why.

Yes, the weather is so cold right now, but it is winter after all.

When your knee is healed, try swimming if the doc will let you, it is amazing how much movement you can have without pain, when you do not have to fight so much with gravity to move the injured part. I am sorry you had to have this surgery; folks do not realize that most orthopedic surgery has an equal component of pain to oncology; it is the bloodiest, and most painful of work to have done, but it also yields the greatest results of the best quality of life improvement for the patient. My RA is young in its life, but is also under good control with medication, which I hate that, but there is no choice. I have a new profound respect for pain, and have come to understand what pain can force us to do as people(the thinking process that goes with pain, very different). IT does wear on a person, but I am one of the fortunate, as it is under control.

How I do ramble on… I am glad to “see” you again, will snuggle with all the kitties and stay very warm tonight.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-01-30 22:22:09

Wow, Katmoon - thank you for sharing your story! I am sorry about your husband - what a devastating blow that must have been to you!

And how far you have come on your own! what a strong, impressive woman you are! I am amazed at your strength…

And interesting abt the ortho and oncology. This is not the first surgery I have had, and sadly, will not be the last. (And I love swimming.) But, I’m doing the work, and that makes all the difference!

And you ARE young to have RA! Glad you are able to manage it right now (and I hear ya at the medications).

Thanks again, Katmoon!

What I mean is that 0zero will use all his passive aggressive skills to make Clinton look bad. He’ll try to micromanage. Bottom line: they put a second Blago in the White House, IMO.

Comment by PamFlorida | 2009-01-30 16:59:20

BTW-Blago was the original DNC pick for 2008, back in 2000. When it became obvious that he had a big mouth and too much baggage, the DNC decided on BO and introduced him as keynote speaker at the 2004 Convention.

Comment by Belle Gardens | 2009-01-30 20:36:16

Less ability than Blago to think independently, too.

I wonder why they thought Obama would skate where Blago wouldn’t, was Blago too much of a loose cannon, too difficult to control?

Were they looking for youth, or image as opposed to competence?

And given the “Chicago way,” exactly how much money will Obama and the rest gain from this stimulus?

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2009-01-30 20:44:44

And given the “Chicago way,” exactly how much money will Obama and the rest gain from this stimulus?

Probably more than Cheney got for the Iraq war and that is a tidy sum.

Comment by Belle Gardens | 2009-01-30 23:44:20

You know, I really, really want to believe that simply isn’t the case, but given Obama’s Chicago history it’s irresponsible NOT to question his deals.

It’s all such a scam.

I wonder how his PAC is doing?

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-01-30 15:56:05

Um, can we do both? It wasn’t just her calling Clinton a “monster,” which was insulting, but also that Obama didn’t mean what he was saying to his anti-war minions, among other things she has said over the course of the campaign.

The point is that, for a whole host of reasons, she is not a good choice for this position. Thanks for the additional information, jbjd.

I think it’s great Iceland has a woman prime-minister! I hope Iceland with Johanna S. as their new leader can get their economy back on its feet.

Samantha Power does seem to be an “insult” to Hillary Clinton but somehow I think it will all backfire on Obama if that is his intention. Most people don’t know who Samantha is but the nation knows who Hillary is. For those of us who know something about Power, it’s all negative so she better be careful with what she says because her “feet will be held to the fire.”

Comment by elise | 2009-01-31 04:53:33

Amy, sorry to hear you have problems with your knee. I do want to repeat something I said on another thread about Hillary. Her influence goes way beyond politics in the US. She is known and admired around the world and I don’t think Powers or Rice have what it takes to make problems for her. In her address to State the other day, she pretty much made it clear she would not put up with petty grievances. She once said Bill was a force of nature and she is also and her influence is deep and wide. Susan Rice wouldn’t know diplomacy if it hit her in the ass.

Comment by Linda C. | 2009-01-31 08:16:32

Very sorry to hear about your knees Amy. My partner has some bad knees too.

It is funny when a country is so desperate they will pick a lesbian to fix it. It is about time is all I have to say. Hopefully it will be more than a “care taker”. However, when the crisis usually passes, it is back to the same old same old. Iceland does have a different culture than ours..so I will hope for a better outcome.

I am not going to wring my hands about Powers or Rice. It won’t solve a thing. Hillary already has her envoys in place.
