Every once in awhile PBS runs documentaries on the 60’s. One, “1968: The Year That Changed a Generation” is a good historical document. “San Francisco in the Sixties” is also good. From today’s perspective, the inmates were definitely in charge of the asylum. In fact the film “King of Hearts” became a cult favorite of the times. When you have a big majority of activist youth on drugs with all of the social ills and restrictions of the 50’s, it’s a prescription for chaos.

I left the nuttiness of the city in 1968 to live in the country for the next 13 years. It took 20 to gain perspective. It wasn’t all negative. The people who formed the “Back to the Land” movement were the harbingers for organic food, recycling, green housing and many other changes eventually adopted by society. To this day, I don’t know if any of the gains are worth what we lost. I miss social niceties, and loath the vile, vulgar language and behavior used by the so-called “hip” of today.

Experimentation of drugs took the lives of a number of old friends. Aids took even more. I consider myself lucky not to have become entrapped. Looking back to another documentary of the Big Sur Folk Festival filmed at Esalen in the 70’s, I recall the words of one of my wisewoman mentors who once said (when discussing those days) “Yes, my Dear, we’ve certainly known a motley crew.” So true.

Does anyone wonder when all of this will actually hit the MSM. Will all of this start to ooze out in 3-6 months when BO’s simulus packaage, his appointment of tax cheats and his promise of 3-4 million saved and new jobs turns out to be the most disillusioning load of crap ever? Then will the media turn against him and start to reveal all of the nastiness surrounding this man going back to his radical days at Columbia, etc?

One thing I have to say about this whole election cycle is that it has been a crash-course in 60s radicals and the radical left. It’s all a little before my time, and I never knew I needed to catch up with this part of American history. It has been like time warp to 1968. Good thing the library is stocked with some good books to see what all these guys were up to back then, because the MSM has been no help.
