Pelosi stretches the truth
By Old Grumpy Guy on February 5, 2009 at 11:31 AM in Congress (House & Senate), Current Affairs, Democracy, Depression, Economic Stimulus, Economy, Humor, Nancy Pelosi
Did you see what Nancy Pelosi had to say about the dire job situation in America? In case you didn’t catch it, she said that 500 million Americans lose their jobs every month that the economic downturn lasts.
That means the country has lost at least 2 billion jobs since the recession began. Even allowing for those who work two, three or even four jobs, it means that not only are there no jobs left in America, but that we now have minus a billion jobs that were not there in the first place.
This is scary stuff.
It is not only scary to have such a huge shortfall in the job market - amounting in effect to more than six no-jobs for every man, woman and child in America - it is even scarier that someone with Nancy’s loose grasp of economic reality (or at least a loose grasp on her tongue) should be one of the most influential people in Congress.
Of course this is not the first time that Pelosi has exaggerated slightly. She helped to scupper the first economic rescue package (though some, including me, may say that is not a bad thing) by making absurdly partisan claims that it was the economic policies of George Bush that were solely to blame for the crisis, whereas it was Congress (led by Pelosi and helped by Barney Frank) that blocked reforms of Freddy Mac, Fanny Mae and the legislature that allowed the whole sub prime mortgage fiasco to happen in the first place.
I am pretty sure it will not be her last exaggeration. I wonder what her next one will be. Of course there was her recent promise that no rescue package would be passed that contained any pork. Did I hear someone say something about pigs flying?

Grumy–you are wonderful! I really needed a GOOD laugh! Thanks for your considerable talents.
Whoops–meant GrumPy. (Still on my first cup of coffee.)
That’s not the only reason why they call her stretch.
I love you, OGG.
That’s all for now.
Thanks Arabella. But we have to be careful not to make a certain person jealous.
Now I get it! Nancy is counting all the no show jobs.
OGG,
Stretch Pelosi,
Now your talking my language!
Or better yet my leader
The great One!
Mark Levin
thanks Grumpy, I was cracking up laughing yesterday when I heard this. There are only 150 million working people in America.
Hmm….150-500=….um,ah, let’s see, um, hold on….I got it, hey wait a second….that’s minus 350. So if we include dogs, cats, rabbits, babies, cockatiels and a few hundred donkeys, that would make it about right.
Somebody needs to kick Pelosi’s ass into next week.
Fox news pointed out this AM that Speaker Pelosi got her figures by referring to all the people registered by ACORN in all 57 states.
Aha! I think you’ve hit the nail on the head Portia Elizabeth. Everything becomes clear now.
LOL,ok that makes perfect sense now.
The mentality of our “leaders” is downright embarassing. I hope they all get voted out.
LOL! That flyin’ pig needs lipstick. I agree that Pelosi is largely responsible for letting the recession happen which is what ensured Obama’s win. She gets NO slack cut for her stupid mouth.
BTW, love that Stickley lamp over your left shoulder.
The lamp is a genuine reproduction
LOL! I have a similar one—a future heirloom.
And they told me mine was one of a kind! I wonder if it was Nancy Pelosi who sold it to me.
It’s astonishing how the democrats have managed in two short years to totally undo all of the wonderful accomplishments of nearly a decade of republican majority rule, isn’t it? Particularly when we consider all of the obstacles Bush placed in their path during those two years to try to keep us safe from democratic depredations…
Maybe Obama was the magical catalyist. After all, the fundamentals of the economy were sound until he started edging ahead in the polls. He was probably putting bad mojo on the economy with all those warnings that something wasn’t right about the way things were going…
The problem with all these types is nobody has ever challenged them on their “old hippie” ideals. We may have never have elected a Pelosi in our districts… but to the people in her district… she is telling them exactly what they want to hear. Evidently, to the democratic house majority… they must like her “style” as well. They do keep her in power and in private jets. Like they say in the neighborhoods… hate the “game” not the “player”.
Funny stuff!
While Pelosi stretches the truth, we get to stretch our dollars.
Speaking of Acorn, I hope the bears are willing to share theirs…I hear they are good with sea salt!
Let’s pray that we don’t have to resort to balonophagy during these difficult times.
Botox is a potent neurotoxin.
That explains it all.
As I wrote yesterday, insanity is quietly sneaking up behind Nancy on little cat feet.
I have that feeling too.
LOL…little cat feet.
Grumpy….Great response to Pelosi.
I saw a very interesting map on C-Span yesterday.
Every state in the middle of the country, and most in the south had significantly reduced welfare rolls.
All the traditional dem states had increased theirs…and it ain’t over!
Pelosi knows which side her bread is buttered on…unfortunately, that’s about all she knows!
Hmm….that is interesting.
It makes you wonder what helped.
Was it job creation by luring business to their state? The biofuel investments, more effective use of funds, etc.
OGG, you have outdone yourself!
Personally I’m smitten by the metaphor/mental image of Pelosi grasping her tongue. In front of everybody and everything…
Sounds disgusting. I think I’ve just been traumatized.
Not only does she lie, shes UGLY!!! This ignorant Bimbo will lead us all down the path to ruin !
Speaking from the perspective of an old geezer, I do not think Speaker Pelosi is ugly. In fact, I think she is by far the most attractive Speaker we’ve ever had, and that includes Newt. I do, however, think she’s doing a crummy job.
I think if you put Newt in the right outfit and accessorized him a little, he would be far more attractive than the highly botoxed Pelosi. I understand that Pelosi, like Joan Rivers, can no longer smile because of the botox overuse.
Can no longer smile? She’s always got a big big grin on her face! My question would be, can she ever un-smile?
But you may be right about Newt only needing the right wardrobe. Well, admit it, Nancy’s a hell of a lot cuter than Tip O’Neill!
That’s not a smile she has on her face. It’s rictus.
“That means the country has lost at least 2 billion jobs since the recession began. Even allowing for those who work two, three or even four jobs, it means that not only are there no jobs left in America, but that we now have minus a billion jobs that were not there in the first place.”
ROFL! I had a good chuckle over this. I knew things were bad, but now I discover we’re losing jobs we didn’t even have in the first place. Good grief!
Pelosi must have been thinking of congress’s petty cash fund and got the numbers confused.
Well, I think that Pelosi made a big mistake in the number that she specified, in that it is an actual real number subject to the operations of mathematics. Cynical people, such as you OGG, then can get out their calculators and fiendishly manipulate that real number so that the original statement is revealed as ludicrous. There is a useful number that Pelosi should have used that would have prevented cynics from scoffing at her expense, and that number is a “bizillion.” Everyone knows a bizillion is a very big number, but it is immune to those nasty mathematical operations used by grumpy old men. “A bizillion Americans lose their jobs every month.” That works for me!
Oo, oowawa, you know how to wound a sensitive old guy like me. Cynical? Me? Only a cynic would accuse me of such a thing.
Oooops–Almighty Spam Filter just gobbled my cleverly argued comment, OGG. Just so’s you know, I was trying to hold your feet to the fire . . .
You are the personfication of evil, oowawa. It comes from listening to the wrong kind of music.
I’m not a defender of Pelosi, but obviously she meant to say 500K, which is on the high end of job losses.
One of the viewers of my Youtube channel has pointed out that this is not the first time Pelosi has used that figure. Apparently she did it again in an interview with Charlie Gibson. To paraphrase Lady Bracknell in “The Importance of Being Ernest”, to misquote once can be regarded as an unfortunate accident; to do it twice sounds like gross carelessness.
“more than six no-jobs for every man, woman and child in America”
LOL
Ok Bush was famous for scaring us with the war.
Now OBama and his people keep trying to get everything they want with the threat of the recession. Sorry but at the rate the Dems are trying to spend money the American dollar is not going to be worth the paper its printed on. That means that it probably wont matter if you working or not anyway.
Sounds like Speaker Pelosi is “number challenged.” I wonder if there are other members of congress who have the same, shall we say “learning disability?” Perhaps the stimulus package could include a provision for some private “tutoring” in - “arithmetic” - that’s what they used to call grade school math in my day.
Let’s see - with all those congressmen and women and people like our new Treasury Secretary and Daschle, etc. who have been making “honest mistakes” on paying their taxes, “tutors” of every description seem to be needed. It’s a “win, win” situation for everyone. We create jobs and the American people get lawmakers who can count and leaders who know how to pay their taxes.
pelosi is a back stabing nit wit and only cares that she is 4 inches for the [one] with that big stupid grin on her face, when he signs bills she likes.
