Amateur Hour

web2obamaviolin_edited-1

These days my ears hurt a lot whenever I turn on TV news shows. Those who control how we will be forced to live appear to be digging us even deeper into an 8-year-old hole. And the one now trying to lead the new pack is a man with no experience in doing what he is doing. Even after a few days in office, it shows.

Kathleen Parker , writing for the Washington Post, says it so well.

The first however-many days of Barack Obama’s presidency have been a study in amateurism.

Many suspected that Obama wasn’t quite ready, but kept their fingers crossed. Optimistic disappointment is the new holding pattern.

What’s missing from Obama’s performance isn’t the intelligence that voters acknowledged in electing him. It’s the experience they tried to pretend didn’t really matter. Experienced politicians, after all, got us into this mess.

Absent is maturity — that grown-up quality of leadership that is palpable when the real deal enters a room. There’s a reason why elders are respected. They have something the rest of us don’t have — yet — because we haven’t lived long enough. We haven’t made the really tough decisions, the ones that are often unpopular.

Parker goes on to discuss what we at No Quarter have also been saying for a long time. We have a President who wants—needs, really—to be liked. That right there should have been a reason enough to refrain from running for this particular office in the first place. His inexperience alone is likely to reveal itself in a myriad of actions (or, as likely, inactions) that will result in confusing, confounded, ill-conceived, and wishy-washy decisions. You know the old saw: “He who seeks to please everyone ends up pleasing no one.”

Or, Obama is only in it to please himself. He cannot hide his arrogance and comes off as a petulant child. He makes GWB look infinitely mature

Honestly, I’m beginning to think the media hawked Obama in order to keep their jobs. What better way to be needed than to endlessly go on about a disaster, and in this case, it’s the president.

Lesson learned America. We don’t need an Idol, we need a true leader.

Sheesh, it already feels like four effing long years…

Back in the early 80s (it seems so long ago, now!), I read an insightful little book by Dr. Nathaniel Branden called “The Psychology of Romantic Love.” The nugget that hit me is that an intimate relationship can only flourish if neither partner needs it. He proposed that to have a good relationship, the partners must first be able to come to grips with their “existential aloneness.”

I think you touched on this concept, Pat. A President must NOT need the approval and love of the citizenry. To need them puts boundaries on the ability of the leader to lead and to make the decisions — often painful ones — that must be made. To have that need puts the leader in a one-down position in the relationship between the leader and the led.

I like this comment. Stan. Something to really think about.

Comment by oowawa | 2009-02-12 21:54:48

It is indeed “something to really think about.” Where I would start to think about the analogy is here:

Does Obama need the “approval” or “love” of the citizenry? There are some alternatives:

Could it be instead, the blind devotion (and is that the same?) Or the worship? Or the acquiescence to his majesty? Or the abject subjugation of his “subjects”? Or perhaps the humiliation of his enemies, whoever they might be? Or are these things mixed together in some kind of perverse relationship? It’s all very confusing.

Here is what I don’t think is his motivation: to see the United States become a stronger and more prosperous country, regardless of what happens to him.

Comment by oowawa | 2009-02-12 22:04:38

Trying to reconcile this with Stan’s original statement: perhaps a true leader must not NEED any kind of emotional feedback from the citizenry, whether it may be adulation, love, worship, fear, humble acquiescence, or whatever. It gets in the way of his job, of making good decisions for the country as a whole. (Apologies–I’m kinda thinking out loud here.)

Comment by MrMike | 2009-02-12 22:43:07

I think that was Bill Clinton’s fault. He needed approval so made concessions to the republicans he shouldn’t have.

Bill Clinton had something that B-Crack never, ever will. The Clintons always felt like they were “for the people” and they could relate to Americans on every level. For whatever reason, looking at B-Crack makes you feel like you are looking at an alien from another planet. No connection to human beings whatsoever.

Comment by Anne | 2009-02-13 09:32:12

I agree completely. The part about our seniors getting screwed is what makes me absolutely crazy. NPR was talking about the new health reforms written into the stimulus bill (sneaky and cruel) that take steps to socialize health care at the expense of seniors. About the new administrations’s opinion that seniors need to “become more accepting of the ailments that come with getting older.” That is just WRONG.

Comment by trixta | 2009-02-13 16:26:56

Yeah, at a time when life expectancy is rising, we get Obummer’s Eugenics Heath Care. Well, I guess the argument could be made for everyone to “[accept] the ailments that come with [life]” in general. In this case, smokers (such as Obama) or obese people who are a drain on health care resources would be denied health care too.

I guess we’ll be heading in this direction: First old people would have to go, then the disabled, then ill children, then pregnant women . . . . Pretty soon it will be only a small sector of society getting health care. I wonder what Sen Kennedy has to say about Obummer’s health care plans?

Thanks to all who commented and for taking my post seriously.

For the record, I was a staunch Hillary supporter in the primaries, but along about May ‘08, I saw the handwriting on the wall. I couldn’t go the PUMA route. So I spent some time working hard to reconcile myself to the fact that I was going to vote for Obama. That’s as far as I went — my vote. No money and no time. It was their time…their moment. Fine, I thought. I stand relieved.

I’ve seen the warts. He’s made some bad mistakes. I’ve had about all the bipartisanship crap I want to see for a while. But as a citizen and still a Democrat, I hope he succeeds. The country needs him to succeed. If he goes down, it won’t be with my help.

Comment by no kidding | 2009-02-13 01:32:36

Stan — the only problem is that success for Obama means that he will have spent 9.7 Trillion of our treasury. He will have bailed out every industry and maybe created 3 million jobs. According to Lou Dobbs 22 Million are either out of work or under employed.

This Stimulus which will cost anywhere between 800 Bill and 1.3 Trillion has not been available to be read by anyone and we the people and the Congressional Republicans are clueless about the amount of pork actually in this bill.

I was a Dem all my voting life until this last election but I could not just sit by and watch as they stole the nomination for Obama. Now Hope and Change has become Disaster and Depression. The Census will be used to game the next election. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. Perhaps if Obama fails he will become more humble — that would be a change I would like to see.

Comment by Snickers | 2009-02-13 03:18:12

Yes, No Kidding. And Stan, with all due respect, for any Democrat who had seen how corrupt this fellow was and how misogynist, sexist, homophobic, racist, how he swindled Hillary and gamed the caucuses, and still voted for him then we are truly doomed. As a lifelong left-wing, liberal Democrat I got the hell out of my Party and went the Independent route. I voted for Hillary and then the old guy, because frankly it was incumbent on us, the Democrats, to make sure the DNC didn’t get away with theft and out and out corruption and win the White House, and to vote for him, whether or not you gave him money is really beyond my powers of comprehension. I, too, hope he fails and soon, so that maybe, just maybe, we can get some adults running the show, something we desperately need considering the multi-faceted crisis we are entangled in.

An excellent post. Obama’s ego needs to be adored is getting ridiculous. His inexperience along with the uh’s and er’s are showing.

I don’t see anything but continual electioneering, speechifying, and the immaturity is in the fear mongering and frantic haste to cobble this flawed stimulus togewther.

Coming in Obama had enormous political capital and it should have been used to assess what was really happening and helping to craft a pigless bill that would go to a hostile week GOP ready to obstruct at every turn.

Instead his fragile dream of charming the GOP to a point of any cooperation is downright silly.

Real change is hard, hard work and incremental.
We need to stop hearing platform speeches, and to expect some grown up leadership.

Comment by Obama: Dubya II Electric Boogaloo | 2009-02-12 21:53:48

When Jackie Robinson was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers he was more than just another black ball player, the guy had the talent to prove that he was just as able as any white man to play the sport. That is why he is hailed as a genuine hero and baseball has retired his number, 42. Jackie Robinson is so bad ass that baseball card companies don’t even issue a card #42 for the most part (unless if it’s some special tribute card).

Obama? He’s some hack back bencher hitting .240 and plays questionable defense, but because of his connections went through the minor Negro Leages and straight to the majors. Unfortunately, he’s no Jackie Robinson.

And this is pretty much what we have. A AA ball playing loser trying to perform at the level of major league professionals.

Comment by JozefAL | 2009-02-12 22:38:32

You’re right about the jersey number deal, but the card companies have been issuing cards with the number “42″ for as long as they’ve produced card sets exceeding that set size. It has nothing to do with Robinson’s being “so bad ass” which would make no sense whatsoever anyway. (Even your own comment proves the lack of sense. Robinson WAS “as” talented as any white player, yet how many white players have had their numbers retired by MLB from ALL teams? Most number retirements are done on a team basis to recognize/honor a long-time important player. As an aside Mariano Rivera is still allowed to wear 42 since he had been issued the number before 1997.) Card companies are not owned by MLB; they merely license the players’ images/likenesses and team/uniform trademarks. Everything else about the cards is wholly controlled by the companies, including the numbers. Incidentally, MLB only made the number retirement decision in 1997 and cards were being produced for DECADES before that. Why would Topps, Donruss, Fleer or Upper Deck (all of which produced cards before, and since, 1997) SUDDENLY decide to quit using a number?
Hotels may not use the number 13 for any floors out of superstition, but that doesn’t mean that a 13th floor doesn’t exist in those hotels. Card companies, however, aren’t going to “skip” a number for any specific reason. There have been baseball card sets which have “lost” a number here or there, but they’ve also “doubled” numbers as well–all of which have been accidents.

Comment by MrMike | 2009-02-12 22:47:12

At that time there were many on the Negro Leagues who could out perform white players.

You have unquestionably characterized him perfectly and his “so far” presidency with your most recent depiction. He most likely intended to “muddle through” this presidency by leaning on others to do the heavy lifting for him so that he could sit back and enjoy the ride.

He seems to be rather delighted with the trappings of the presidency and while out on the “campaign trail” touting his supposed empathy for those who are faring poorly in this economy, has failed to deprive himself of anything which seems to delight him. The use of Air Force One to take a trip to celebrate Valentine’s Day with his wife, in Chicago, comes immediately to mind. It costs a lot of $$$’s to put that plane in the air and this seems to be a blatant example of his “let them eat cake” philosophy….the same one he espoused while dining on those $100 lb. Japanese steaks!

I don’t think so. Who knows? However, I don’t think Fitzgerald is making a case about corrupt Chicago politics but making sure to not tarnish or touch BO. Don’t tell me you are one of those who thinks Obama managed to stay above the fray while all around him were rigging elections, etc.?

If O had Fitz in his pocket, I believe O would have talked him out of having the Blogo mess upstage his pre-inaugural lovefest that he was not able to enjoy. If bringing Blogo down was to keep him from appointing someone to O’s seat, it failed!

The fact that JJJr appears to have raised money for Blogo and made no secret of his desire for O’s senate seat looks like he was cooperating with Blago and this had to be a huge embarrassment to O.

I think there is a lot of embarrassment if not more in store for O and his Chicago gangsters.

PS Wild Child. This is America, not Canada. So, the socialist talk doesn’t work for me anyway, nor should it work for any American citizen.

Comment by WildChild | 2009-02-12 23:20:03

socialism? Before the conservative wave of hysteria transmagorified it into something it isn’t, levying taxes was the responsible way for our government to raise the money it spent.

But now all you hear is Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee from the fours corners of the land … as we go bankrupt. LOL great plan you have there.

Comment by AlexisM | 2009-02-12 23:21:59

Well, let’s see…If the money we paid in taxes went to the right places, we wouldn’t be having these conversations. And your socialist nirvana is a joke. You will, what, only be happy when the very last person of wealth is picked to the bone, sucked dry, and poor? Wow, that’s a lot of liberal hate there honey.

Comment by WildChild | 2009-02-12 23:26:11

ROFLMAO oh your so full of it. We’ve had deficit spending ever since your god ronny stated all this insanity. The truth is we’ve bee putting it on the credit card since 1981. The only one who came close to making it right was a liberal, named Bill Clinton.

And then you conservatives went and fucked it all up fr everybody

Comment by AlexisM | 2009-02-12 23:33:32

wild child — Obama wants to spend 9.7 trillion to bail out every industry. Once he spends the treasury then what? Maybe he’ll say I SCREWED UP.

Comment by WildChild | 2009-02-13 02:29:36

That’s why I said they are all amateur hour. Without levying the taxes to pay for the spending, BOBO is doing the exact same thing the conservatives did under the shrub.

It is irresponsible governing and that is not change we can believe in. It’s the same old same old from the last eight years.

Comment by wodiej | 2009-02-13 05:23:49

cripes, when is enough, ENOUGH?? The government from local, state and Federal already tax the shit out of us. How about them slashing spending? It’s irresponsible to expect me to pay more taxes for stupid shit we don’t need. If Federal govt would cut out all the waste, they wouldn’t need to raise my taxes. And I would say most of the people on this blog are not from the “me” generation.

Comment by WildChild | 2009-02-13 12:49:40

I think it’s time to end this little illusion you have going that our national debt was doubled by the boneheaded conservatives because of stupid shit we don’t need ; They made massive tax cuts at a time when we were standing in the doorway of budget surpluses that could have been used to pay down our debt, balance our books and prevent the bullshit we are now living . But instead they gave it away as fuel for the next bubble.

Sorry Pat. You would think that due to our current economic meltdown that people would steer away from creating fictions as a way to better there position, but that is not the case. Knowing how much damage a fiction passed off as truth can do, it is the wise move to go after them and the people who attempt to con others with them whenever and whereever they are in the act.

Regardless of the fact Kathleen Parker is a conservative columnist, she spoke highly of Obama during the primaries and always took Hillary to task. Then in the general, she continued to speak well of O and against McCain and Palin. Plus the fact, she was on Chris Matthew’s Sunday show every other week. No one got on there unless they were in the tank for Obama. We are all delighted that perhaps she is seeing the light.

Comment by Winston | 2009-02-12 23:03:40

I would not trust Kathleen Parker one iota. Am I happy she is dissing Barry? Yes. But she got him elected by hounding Governor Sarah Palin. Parker is a mollusk.

Peggy Noonan is another reprehensible creature whose off mike comment revealed her true feelings. She was relentless on the attack against Palin. Noonan is an iguana.

While we are at it, how about Christopher Buckley, son of William F Buckley Jr. Christopher Buckley is a one of the STDs (Socialist Traitor Democrats) (NQ dems are not STDs) who voted for and publicly endorsed Barry. Buckley is a scorpion.

Now onto Colon Powellosi. He endorsed Barky and dissed my Sarah. Colon is a salamander.

All the people I mentioned are conservatives who morphed into STDs all because of O. And Parker and Noonan are females last time I checked. Their behavior is inexcusable and now they want to pretend they weren’t in the tank for BO.

When I mention their names I have to scratch my face like Barry did to Hill and McCain.

Comment by I'm a Linda too | 2009-02-12 23:15:01

Thanks for the info. Especially when someone like myself learned how bad WaPo got and stopped reading them.

Comment by Winston | 2009-02-12 23:25:38

They were all looking out for their own job security. Noonan was a former Reagan speech writer who has gotten loopy. Buckley has to resign from NRO. You all know who his dad was, one of the iconic conservative thinkers of all time. Powell believed everything he read about Palin, never met the woman and his perceptions of her thru the media filter was his single reason for dropping McCain.

Un Feakin believable.

Comment by FranSC | 2009-02-13 01:58:38

Powell, like every other AA in this country – conservatives, republicans, as well as the salivating democrats, et al, could not help themselves when it came to Obama and electing an AA to the presidency. It was all very racially one-sided which they would deney to their dying day.

The only one who spoke rationally about O was Michael Steel, the new chair of the RNC. He remained loyal to his conservative philosophy and party while all around him people like Juan Williams from NPR, a republican, cried on every occasion that put Obama closer to January 20th. It was disgusting.

Comment by I'm a Linda too | 2009-02-13 11:02:54

Yes, all the NeoCons that promoted Bush backed Obama.

Scott McClellan, Powell, Buckley, the list goes on. They knew a good bet.

I only disagree about Powell and Palin. He was NEVER going to support his supposed “friend” McCain. He had been helping Obama during the priimary, But he still had the stench of promoting the war in Iraq then, so they kept as quiet as possible and just said he was “advising the campaign.

Powell tried to find EXCUSES to give. And then the final piece was so laughable. It had nothing to do with his race. NOOOOOOO! (snark) You only voted for the first African American, as a majority did, but it had nothing to do with him being African American. LOL

Phase II consists of

* corporate pillaging of whatever is left to pillage;

* privatizing SS;

* rendering the dollar worthless via hyper-inflation;

* double-digit interest rates;

* continuing GWB’s perpetual war policy;

* and continuing to erode our right’s via FISA.

Now onto Colon Powellosi. He endorsed Barky and dissed my Sarah.

I have lost friends over my support of Sarah..
I’m proud of my vote and I’m proud of her values!

Comment by Winston | 2009-02-12 23:34:25

She is a libertarian more than anything. I think you have said this much yourself. She has her own beliefs but doesn’t foist them on other people.

He is my proof. When McCain picked Palin the people interviewed in Alaska couldn’t even name what her religious views were. They didn’t know.

Alaskans are incredibly independent souls with libertarian inclinations. Its a frontier mentality.

Lose some friends but keep your self respect. Country First Dude.

Comment by AlexisM | 2009-02-12 23:37:32

It doesn’t matter what party you belong to, Palin rocks and she’s the future of this country. Period. If the wing nut, batcrap freaks could get out of their own way, and stop destroying America because of party nonsense, we could have real leadership instead of the dumbazz we got.

The minute Obama was elected I took off my Texas Democrat bumper sticker and replaced it with “Country First”. It looks so much better.

Comment by Winston | 2009-02-13 00:14:46

That’s the spirit. All us people in the middle are quite literally PUMAS. This extends way beyond the original intent of the term. It was mainly Hill supporters but now it now applies to that large swath of territory cut through the middle of the political landscape.

Same here. Only I don’t mind the “casual” friendships I lost, because this election showed who were friends.

In my mind, one doesn’t send nasty, threatening and condescending notes if I don’t support their guy. I didn’t do it to them for suppporting the empty one, who were they for acting as poorly as they did?

Also, in the blog world, learned that they were liars. I would receive one email saying, I support Hillary too, but would never send out articles promoting Hillary’s campaign, only Baracks. And then after they knew I left a certain blog, started posting their articles on there DAILY.

To another who would say the “secretly” supported Hillary, but then blogged, “it’s important for all of you to know I did not vote for Hillary”. …. to “I couldn’t vote for Obama, so I voted for Nader”…and her blogging that she voted for “Obama”.

Being this online community started so strong in 2003/2004, this was the first full election where this community was in swing, so I think I was done a favor to see how folks really are and apparently don’t have integrity and consider what they write in the online world as noncommittal.

What exactly did Ms, Parker say in this article that is “off?” She made 2 points: Obama’s inexperience is showing and he needs to be liked–and I think that is a dangerous combination.

You don’t have to trust her, but what did you think of this particular article?

Comment by The Real HC | 2009-02-13 00:08:14

I agree with Ms. Parker (whom I usually dislike) that Obama’s inexperience and his need for adoration spell trouble. Also, hes a dishonest lying turd, but thats sort of par for the course in politics.

All he had to offer was “hope and change”, neither of which is happening.

Pat – great cartoon and excellent post. While the article is spot-on, it is also too late. That is what I think if this article. Too darn late.

Comment by AnnieCollier | 2009-02-13 02:25:42

She could write dozens of articles exposing this empty suit and still not make up for the insults she threw on Sarah and Hillary.

Obama wants to stay in touch with everyday Americans, as symbolized by his reluctance to surrender his BlackBerry.

Well I don’t believe this statement she made above.

Surrendering your cell phone as a SYMBOL of something? Obama “staying in touch with everyday Americans”, like, say, Joe the plumber?

Obama loathes the average guy. He said so in SF and they got it on tape.

Anyway that is not the point I was making. There is nothing wrong with the article. Which is why I said:

Am I happy she is dissing Barry? Yes.

What she said in the article is fairly obvious by now.

I am referring to Parkers past switch hitting tendencies and her elitist attitude which was on full display in her focus on criticizing Palin. This shocked the conservatives over at hot air for instance. She became their nemesis. They wanted to strangle her and Noonan. This went on for weeks. Drudge even linked to it, as if shocked, if I remember correctly.

She could write wonderful stuff exposing Obama, but come 2012 she is capable of twisting just about anything.

I think this thread is great Pat, love the cartoon, and I wasn’t in anyway criticizing you or the article. I don’t think anyone else thought so. I was just giving a warning about Parker and Noonan on something that still stings in the minds of many.

Comment by AnnieCollier | 2009-02-13 02:22:50

Winston, for me, the article is one of the early (along with MoDo) winners of a plate of crow. There’ll be more. I think it’s great to point out their hypocrisy. They’ve definitely been shown, in comparison to their sell out, to be unworthy of conservative credentials. Phonies, one and all.

Love Pat’s cartoons.

Yes, they went after Sarah simultaneously. It was shameful. I’ll never bother with either one of them. Noonan who was a speech writer for Reagan…not a fan of him…but wouldn’t you think she’d have admired Sarah?

Comment by Winston | 2009-02-13 04:28:22

Yes AC, thanks for backing me up on this. Its a total mystery to me. It was a simultaneous attack.

I was flummoxed over what took place. At the time I never heard of NQ. I was over at hot air just lurking at the stream of people pounding away at their keyboards with intense outrage over the betrayal. Same thing at LGF.

Drudge was linking on a regular basis just to expose them cause he liked Palin from the word go.
He always seems to favor the under-dog. Drudge has very considerable libertarian leanings. He is scared to death of google for example.

Anyway it was so counter-intuitive and drew an enormous amount of attention. No one could figure out the motive behind it, especially when it became clear that the criticism was over stupid stuff. Parker and especially Noonan came off as snobby elites like they had some kind of intellectual superiority over the unwashed and we had better listen to them for we could not possibly understand what we were witnessing.

Keep in mind that the powers that be are freaked over the connection Sarah made with average people.

All this mind you when she wasn’t even at the top of the ticket. The other meme that the MSM was hell bent on jaming down our throats was that Sarah was the drag on the ticket.

Every person I have ever talked to voted for McCain BECAUSE of Palin.

Just for the record I would vote for Hill or Bill in a heartbeat to get rid of Obama. It might come to that.

The convergence of those mentioned along the same trajectory made it seem like it was orchestrated. I have always viewed the media with suspicion and when I see 90 degree turns or 180s, something is up.

Obama unmasked. He’s not a populist. He needs Wall Street and they own him. Just look at our Treas. Sec.

Same old, same old. The banks win. WallSt wins.

He is hugely disappointing, and his inexperience is showing through the smiles, the gloss.

Thanks for the link to Katleen Parker’s editorial. I read it in its entirety and was struck by two things, First Parker seems to be saying that BHO wouldn’t relinquish his Blackberry because he wanted to say in touch with “ordinary Americans”. That’s absurd. To BHO “ordinary Americans” are props for a photo op; to adore him and make him look good at a campaign stop.

Secondly, she makes an analogy between BHO and an abused spouse who is FEMALE. I was rather offended by the comparison. Not that I’m an abused spouse. But her initial use of the gender neutral word “spouse” means it could be man or woman. Yet in the next sentence she clarifies that her comparison is to a WOMAN. Are there no weak males? no abused husbands?

Hey Pat! Another very funny graphic–kind of reminds me of my older son when he picked up the violin. Ghastly!!

Kathleen Parker? Wasn’t she the conservative columnist who dissed Sarah Palin? In fact, if I remember correctly she led a pack of vicious dogs who took great sport in tearing Palin down: she didn’t sound right, didn’t go to the right schools, was too stupid to be VP.

And now we have Barack Obama. As President. I’m not a conservative nor a Republican. But I’d prefer Johnny Mac in a minute over what I’m seeing now. In my mind, the Kathleen Parkers of the world have no right to state the obvious. Yes, Obama is an amateur. And Kathleen Parker and Peggy Noonan and a whole slew of Republican mouthpieces helped put him in the WH.

They ought to take a good, hard look in the mirror.

Good cartoon!

Comment by Rich | 2009-02-13 11:35:25

Very nice cartoon describing what is going on! The only problem is he is doing exactly what he said, as an inexperienced candidate, he would do. He is towing the Democratic Party line and doing what the Democratic leaders want him to do. The people who voted for him wanted him to put the country into further debt and give them all kinds of social services. He is doing what he is good at, which is giving speeches and running for office. He never said he was good at governing or that he had real governing experiences.

In fact I admire him for being smart enough to know that he does not know everything and putting on his team many Clinton people, which I believe is what Hillary would have done.

Anyone who thinks that government and how it functions can change overnight just because there is a new president deserves to be disappointed, and as usual we all suffer. When will we learn that good looks and good talk, no matter how motivating, is not enough and experience counts?

Rich

Thanks for a good laugh. This psycho-babble about “needing to be liked” was funny enough, but then the cherry on top: a poster quoting Nathianel Branden, that Ayn Rand disciple who left his wife to pair with Rand and later cheated on her (Rand). She ditched him for being deceitful — and an intellectual lightweight.

Rand’s other notable disciple was Alan Greenspan. You all know how well his application of her free-market philosphy turned out.
