CNN’s Coverage of Hillary’s Trip to Asia

[MSNBC's coverage is two stories down.]

CNN’s COVERAGE News story: Clinton heads to Asia on first state trip || STORY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Hillary Clinton will bypass Europe and travel to Asia on her maiden voyage overseas
  • U.S. Secretary of State Clinton to visit Japan, China, South Korea and Indonesia
  • Trip illustrates Obama administration’s desire for a broader partnership with Asia
  • Trip also highlights commitment to resolving the North Korean nuclear issue

BELOW THE FOLD: “CNN’s Kristie Lu Stout talks with David Lampton of John Hopkins University about Hillary Clinton’s trip to Asia” … This is a great backgrounder video on all the historic and current issues and crises that Secretary Clinton will be covering in this trip that covers an array of complex matters, including her historic 1995 speech in Beijing on women’s rights … as well as snippets from the longer CNN news article …

FROM the CNN news article:

ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska (CNN) — Hillary Clinton says her first overseas trip to Asia as U.S. secretary of state is aimed at creating a “network of partners” to tackle problems that no nation can deal with alone, including the global economic crisis.

Hillary Clinton seeks improved relations with China, where she said the U.S. would renew military contacts.

En route to Asia on Sunday, Clinton told reporters that the economy would serve as the backdrop of her trip, and she intends to explain steps the United States is taking with its $787 billion stimulus bill. She said she will be “seeking cooperation on ways that we are going to work through these very difficult economic times.”

Clinton is slated to travel to Japan, China, South Korea and Indonesia to discuss a range of issues, including mutual economic recovery, trade, the prevention of nuclear weapons proliferation and reversing the global warming trend.

The trip represents a departure from a diplomatic tradition under which the first overseas trip by the secretary of state in a new administration is to Europe.

Speaking at the New York-based Asia Society last week, Clinton said the Obama administration wants to “develop a broader and deeper” relationship with Asia, a region that has felt overlooked by the United States despite its growing global importance.

“It demonstrates clearly that our new administration wants to focus a lot of time and energy in working with Asian partners and all the nations in the Pacific region,” she said, “because we know that so much of our future depends upon our relationships there.” Watch David Lampton of John Hopkins University discuss Clinton’s trip »

On Sunday, she addressed North Korea’s nuclear program, which she’s called “the most acute challenge to stability in northeast Asia.” Clinton said the Obama administration is prepared to seek a permanent, stable peace with Pyongyang as long as its regime pursues disarmament and does not engage in aggression against neighboring South Korea. The United States has a “great openness and willingness to working with them,” she said. … [READ ALL.]

Hillary is the real President as far as I’m concerned.
I have said it many times to the chagrin of others that Hillary being SOS will ultimately lead to her being elected president.

Hillary is the face of America to the world!

Well said Seattle !! Agree 100%.

SusanUnPc: thanks you so much for these two post and videos following and focusing on HRC’s first official trip as SoS. Watching her representing this country and all of us overseas fills me with enormous pride.

You betcha! And, I haven’t even made it to Fox News and to the State Department’s Web site to see what they have up!

I’m just so curious about every single thing that Hillary is doing.

Btw, Andy, if you have time: I am trying to find the video of Andrea Mitchell interviewing the great CIA spy Robert Baer in which he praises Hillary’s viewpoints on South/North Korea. When I go to the home page of MSNBC, i still get the old Morning Joe videos. If you run across that Robert Baer interview, I’d LOVE to have that link and would appreciate your e-mailing it to me. And I’m hoping I can talk Larry into writing it up since he KNOWS Bob Baer, and Larry also knows so much about South/North Korea.

(Part of my problem: I was up half the night trying to upgrade our WordPress version, but had to give up around 3 a.m., and I keep getting too sleepy and lying down. But I want to be rested so I am sure to hear Lilly Ledbetter tonight at 6 p.m. PT (my time).

And, did you notice — since you and I talked about it last night in the live chat room - that, thanks to Patty Murray’s statement on the Ledbetter law, I found out that there were 54 sponsors of that bill, and Barack Obama never signed on. Figures, huh. (I added it as an update about three stories down.)

Thanks for your always kind comments, Andy. They mean a lot!

Indeed I read your post on this and I was really glad that you pointed this out to people explicitly. The Ledbetter law is such an important law that it is equally crucial to recognize all those lawmakers who sponsored the bill and did all the really hard work!
It should have been quite embarrassing that Obama was not one of the sponsors…. And as you wrote there: how come Michelly Obama got to speak but Sen. Barbara Mikulski didn’t ?

I will look for the Robert Baer interview–will email if I find it.

Andy: a little OT, but Reuters has an article up about how Mechelle is no fashion icon, as the lefy mags keep trying to frame her. She really isn’t in the spotlight much at all. Another Laura Bush, I guess. Hubby can’t tolerate anyone else in the spotlight.

Comment by Strawberry | 2009-02-16 19:13:38

Uh, no tek, I may be a screaming liberal, but Laura was a nice lady, she never tried to be more than the small town librarian from Texas that she was. Mechelle wants to be Queen of the fashion world. And that ain’t gonna happen unless she loses about 20 pounds. Fashionistas are ruthless when it comes to fat thighs. Go to YouTube and watch a few clips of AB Fab for a few hints about how brutal the run way set can be.

Comment by jangles | 2009-02-16 20:30:48

I almost feel sorry for Meechelle. She has fallen so hastily and easily for the fashionista mime. That is so sad for a 21st Century First Lady to be not much more than a Red Carpet Caper.

It is so, so nice to hear Clinton speak again. I have so missed the intelligence, the knowledge, and the experience with which she speaks. She is the one bright light in this Administration.

Comment by tek | 2009-02-16 19:03:15

I see the media is still trying to paint Bill Clinton as a racist, saying that he made racist remarks against Obama. (CNN today) I guess they’ll keep this up as long as Hillary is able to run for President.

Comment by AlexisM | 2009-02-16 23:44:44

tek…where did that happen? All I saw was some BS about Clinton saying Obama was doing a good job which we all know is a BS publicity stunt. But I didn’t see the “racist” part. Do you have a link???

Maybe if that lazy bum osama would just give up on his negro pride power trip and give the presidency to a capable person like McCain or a capable Republican like Sarah Palin we could actually start to repair our image in the world.
This blessed nation has been stolen from us by democrats and liberals who want to run it into the ground!
Our only hope now is to wait things out and give someone else the keys in 4 years. Until then I’m keeping my guns loaded and Rush on full blast so my neighbors can listen to someone who speaks the truth!

Comment by Mandi08 | 2009-02-16 23:35:29

McCain??? and I was so close to choose this guy. You need to get some real thinking!!!
He prove to US that Him and the rest failed Republicans are in war with Obama, they can not stand to see Him as PRESIDENT. They proving and proving to US, that all they care is them selfs. Now they attacking Obama for His bail out package, and screaming, that this is to much spending??? What a bs.!!! They put US in this mess, now they are telling US to listen to THEM. Are they loosing their…????? They were in power for 30 years, now they want to teach US to whom to listen????

SusanUnPC, thank you for posting these, and the previous ones. (Ditto Seattle Moss.)

Public Service Announcement: Former President Bill Clinton will be on Larry King tonight, from his library in Arkansas. The promo indicated they’ll talk about SOS Hillary, too. (Learned that from listening to Lou Dobbs in the background, with Kitty Pilgrim hosting. Otherwise, I don’t watch much CNN anymore.)

Andrea Mitchell is traveling with Hillary or following/stalking her on the Asian trip. Today on her show it was all about Hillary along with Mitchell’s catty remarks. If I were Clinton, I wouldn’t let her come near me. She treated her so badly during and after the election. If I were Mitchell, I would be ashamed to show my face on television after husband Greenspan helped run our economy into the ground.

Poor Hillary. On her first world trip being tailed by that nasty thing.

Andrea Mitchell AKA Andrea (B)***ytchel.

Clinton Hillster is far too savvy and too clever to play cat fight with Android Mitchell. If Mitchell were smart, she would think about what ship is going to sail with full rigging and a fair wind and she would get on board.

Hillary continues to shine so brightly. Nice to see Jill Doherty. I went to high school with her. She was a brilliant student and a great girl.

Hillary looks so tired, such a long fly, time difference.I am so proud of Her.

HILLARY THREATENING NORTH KOREA..

No more than another phony show for our consumption. North Korea is a sovereign country and has just as much right to nuclear weapons as US, Pakistan, India, Russia, Israel, China…and who know how many other counties….

Despite the commitment of NPT signatories to reduce and then eliminate their stockpiles, the nuclear club members have made only limited moves in that direction. Indeed, several countries are actively modernizing their arsenals. China is reportedly expanding its limited stockpile and introducing a submarine-launched capability. Even more important, the United States has embarked on Complex 2030, which will produce a new generation of nuclear warheads and may well prompt a whole new round of testing. Meanwhile, there is no adequate international mechanism to safeguard the vast amount of nuclear material now available, enough to build 300,000 bombs.

The United States has refused to take the lead in reducing nuclear weapons or their threat, even though former high-ranking officials such as former secretaries of state George Shultz and Henry Kissinger have recently urged “a world free of nuclear weapons. The United States has the most sophisticated nuclear arsenal, it is the only country to have used nuclear weapons, and it has consistently threatened to use them ever since. A just nuclear policy would focus not simply on attempting to suppress the nuclear ambitions of one Kim Jong Il after another. A just nuclear policy would focus on the nuclear alpha male. The only feasible path to just nuclear disarmament begins with Washington.
