Bernard Goldberg Tells It Like It Is

I would like to share with you this interesting article, courtesy of “I’m A Linda Too,” a regular reader here at No Quarter yesterday. It is quite something. A bit late in coming, perhaps, but hey, better late than never, right? The title pretty much gives it away: Media Critic Blasts Chris Matthews’ ‘Man Crush’ On Obama:

It has become one of MSNBC host Chris Matthew’s most infamous lines of the 2008 presidential election:

“I felt this thrill going up my leg,” Matthews said the night Obama resoundingly defeated rival Hillary Clinton in the Virginia and Maryland Democratic primaries.

In case you need a little reminder, here you go:

If you feel the need to go take a shower, I understand. Blech. Apparently, Goldberg shared my sentiment:

And former CBS News Correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who has long alleged liberal bias in the media, highlighted that line as indicative of the media’s “slobbering” press coverage of candidate Obama during his campaign for the White House.

“That’s not commentary, that’s a man-crush,” Goldberg declared on CNN’s Reliable Sources Sunday.

Goldberg, the author of the new book “A Slobbering Love Affair,” credits the media coverage of the 2008 presidential election for ultimately resulting in Barack Obama’s victory.

He specifically faulted coverage of the prolonged Democratic primary campaign, during which two historic candidates contentiously squared off.

“I think in elite liberal circles, certainly inside the media, race trumps gender, and that’s why they slobbered over Barack Obama, and took Hillary Clinton to the back room and beat her with a rubber hose,” Goldberg said.

You’ll get no argument from me. There is no doubt the media was biased in his favor, running far more positive articles than negative ones. Clinton, by contrast, had more negative press than positive. Surprise!! Um, not so much.

And then, Mr. Goldberg took the media to task for their lack of, well, journalism:

Goldberg also faulted political journalists for not digging up controversial sermons of the president’s longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, until Obama had already effectively captured his party’s nomination.

“These tapes were available, you didn’t have to be Woodward or Bernstein to dig them up,” Goldberg said. “If those tapes had come out six months earlier, certainly a year earlier, I don’t think Barack Obama would have been the nominee.

“I think Hillary Clinton would have been. And I think she would have been the president today,” he continued. “And in that sense, she’s the biggest loser in all of this.”

Uh, no kidding. Even Bernstein is no longer a Bernstein, having fallen into CDS (that’s Clinton Derangement Syndrome, for those who don’t know), and being a part of that negative press. Even when Clinton was beating the PANTS off Obama, you would scarcely have known it by the reporting…

I do take exception to one comment by Mr. Goldberg, and that is this: “And in that sense, she’s the biggest loser in all of this.

No, Mr. Goldberg. WE are the biggest losers. Our trust in the democratic process is the biggest loser. Our sense of fair play and decency is the biggest loser. The United States is the biggest loser.

But thank you for speaking up. It would have been nice had it been sooner, but I guess we’ll just have to take later…

I agree, Rev. Amy. We “are” the biggest losers and we’re seeing it played out right now. The ongoing argument by Obamatrons is that Obama represents everything that Hillary stood for–policies, programs, ideas. Well, I admit, Barack Obama was a great mimic, repeating Clinton’s vision in a half-assed way.

But what he could not mimic and has failed to duplicate is Hillary Clinton’s leadership qualities. Outsourcing an 800 billion dollar stimulus package to the likes of Nancy Pelosi isn’t leadership; it’s irresponsibility. And the Far Left can scream all they want that the Housing proposal is just like Hillary’s suggestion.

Really? Unfortunately, we never got to see Hillary’s program in detail.

As for Matthews? He’s an Obama shill in the same way Olbermann is. I don’t watch MSNBC because they showed their colors early on. I do not expect nor do I want a “so-called” TV commentator, faux jounalist to become a mouthpiece for the powers that be. It is “not” a journalist’s job to make sure a particular president succeeds or fails.

As soon as they accept the role of advocate or adversary, they become irrelevant, mere propaganda spewers.

Fortunately, the web has provided many voices, many angles. It’s up to each and every citizen to keep themselves informed, up-to-date and well-versed in the what’s up and what’s down.

That’s our responsibility, our civic duty.

Thanks for the piece!

RRRA, thanks for the article. Appreciate it. Hillary’s housing plan included a HOLC, something like FDR’s program. I don’t think that’s what That One is doing. This whole election cycle was disgusting and I will never get on this unity pony nor ride into the sunset with these frauds.

I find it funny that a few of my more rabid BO neighborhood supporters have taken BO stickers off their cars and are very quiet about BO these days. I think they now realise, they bought “a pig in a poke” as the old saying goes.

Yep. More and more the bots are entering real awareness and it ain’t pretty! I have a friend who lives with her AA boyfriend and they argued alot about Obama. Of course he thought Obama was great and “you got to vote for the brutha! Well, now he says he is sick of Obama already! After a month! Imagine the horror if we get stuck with 4 years of this!

Now if I just knew if ex boyfriend ever figured out he’d been conned?

Oh, well. I have a new boyfriend now anyway! It will be good to have someone to lean on through these tough times!

Same with my liberal Obot friends. No one wants to defend or discuss Obama. It’s like if you don’t talk about it the problem will go away.

Comment by Obamastolemyboyfriend | 2009-02-23 19:29:00

That has been my experience, too. They want to hide their heads in the sand, most likely in shame. A liberal friend of mine who voted for Obama was mad at a man she knows who was telling her that the dems are responsible for the mortgage crisis and that McCain tried to regulate it, but the dems in control wanted no part of it. She was outraged that this man was wrong. I told her no. He was right and she should look it up on the internet (I sent her emails during the campaign, but she would not read any of it!). I started to tell her that Obama is just as bad as Blago, too, and they should treat him the same way. She asked me about the Rezko deal (that I always tried to tell her about and she wouldn’t listen) and at first she was very interested, then she suddenly changed the subject. It was like it was just too painful for her to hear the truth yet! It is coming though. Give them time and I do believe they will all wake up!

RRRA wrote, “No, Mr. Goldberg. WE are the biggest losers.”

YES, thank you. And that’s what I tried adding on the CNN comments with a bit more comparisons thrown in, but for some reason it seemed to be blocking that comments TOO. Major bummer.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-02-23 19:39:25

Thank you for the article, I’m a Linda!

I do not think Hillary would have come up with this plan for one minute – no way. Certainly not with the many giveaways in it it. Heck, she never would have handed it off to Nancy, either.

INTERESTING abt the bumper stickers and everything! A little too late for “Buyer’s Remorse” – now we’re stuck with this guy!!! Sheesh…

Comment by I'm a Linda too | 2009-02-23 21:05:07

You are correct. Hillary would not have come up with this plan. But we knew Obama had none and what he talked of was giving us WARNING signs. And Hillary’s plans were all sound, intelligent and GOOD. And the economists supported her plans as well.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-02-23 21:10:08

You’re exactly right. Consistently, they supported her. Heck, even the media star Surgeon General said her health care plan was better, more comprehensive, and a better bang for the buck! All Obama did was try to mimic her policies, but he doesn’t know or understand them. Hence, handing off something as important as a stimulus package to Pelosi to fill it full of pork…

Comment by FranSC | 2009-02-24 01:24:03

One of the things being said over and over here, I do not agree with. Obama did not “out-source a stimulus package to Pelosi and company”. None of that package was Obama’s.

I heard Pelosi say almost immediately after the election that the stimulus legislation would be ready (translation: is ready now!)for the president to get passed immediately after taking office and thus would have a sweeping, positive, first major thing passed to get his presidency off to a resounding start.

Almost everyone agreed Obama was out trying to sell Nancy Pelosi and the house democrats’ bill. It was pointed out over and over that this was not Obama’s bill, but Nancy Pelosi’s bill.

While this stimulus bill is nothing to be proud of, Obama is getting way more credit than he is due on producing it. He would not have had the first clue as to what to put in it – much less 1200 pages worth. Remember, he had no experience along these lines – he has been running for president since before he was elected to the US Senate.

That Chrissy Matthews still had his job, after the fawning and promoting of Obama, but yet the unbelievable sexist and false accusations against Hillary, that pretty much says it all about the media using their position and our airwaves to promote their own agenda and truth, fact or fairness be damned.

The media I believe did this expecting to cash in with Obama and as they feel threatened by the “internets”, expecting Obama to limit the free internet. That or his promise to spend the most ridiculous amount for his one way messaging marketing campaign had them foaming.

Of course, they didn’t read between the lines to expect and are now barking at Obama’s frequent use of tv for his campaigning on their dime, cutting in to their prime time markets. Gee, so sorry. (not)

My die hard Obot friend really believed that Obobo was going to right all the wrong in this world, starting with a complete withdrawal of our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was going to align all the stars in our universe. I sent her news on her prez sending 17,000 troops to Afghanistan for his surge. She’s awfully quiet about him these days. As you say, at least Goldberg is speaking up. And you can’t start too early with the Obama/media bashing as we look forward to 2012, as far as I’m concerned.
And isn’t it just unbelievable about Bernstein?? I liked Dustin Hoffman in that role better than the real Bernstein anyway!

Comment by FranSC | 2009-02-24 01:32:07

I just wonder what the Clintons ever did to Bernstein and Sally Quinn to cause them to hate them so much. They have infuriated me more than almost anyone else.

I won’t soon forget when Sally Quinn was covering the Pope’s visit to the US for MSNBC. She found a way to invoke Obama when addressing a question about religion in this country. It made my hair stand on end that she could be so sappy.

Comment by Cindy | 2009-02-24 05:13:08

FranSC,
Sally Quinn has been the grande dame of high society in D.C. ever since she busted up Ben Bradlee’s marriage. When Bill Clinton became President, Sally extended her social hand to Hillary, but the First Lady said thanks, but no thanks, I’m here to work. (That’s when Hillary opened her own office in the WH).
Sally was infuriated at this “snub”. It meant that Sally would be an “outsider”, and not the center of the First Family’s social world. She never got over it.

So CNN has a story on this? Awww …trying to gain a patina of credibility these days now that their ratings are at the bottom? Hmm, I wonder how that could have happened? I don’t suppose it had anything to do with how they alienated Clinton democrats as well as republicans with their despicable Pravda propaganda like coverage during the primaries as well as the GE?

The zombie koolaid chuggers are all at MSNBO and republicans and Clinton dems are at FOX so I take it that CNN is feeling rather lonely these days. Boo hoo.

Hey CNN, try some objective reporting next election season instead of whoring yourselves to some smooth operator and then maybe …maybe you might regain the public’s trust. Until then F*ck off!

Comment by I'm a Linda too | 2009-02-23 20:17:42

Oh, no, don’t forget, CNN has Donna Brazile and Bernstein…and Martin…and Campbell Brown. They were on the Obama wagon, they just didn’t allow such extremes as MSNBC.

But, here, they’re doing it again. And as I said, I can’t consider promoting CNN as a news source, but I guess this really isn’t.
They are more like entertainment, where they are comfirming what was once reported as news and they are only coming around to talk about it now, kind of like story telling.

Or, maybe they’re just seeing the warning signs and don’t want to me aligned with the loser in chief.

Clinton’s mockery of Obama proves true

CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) — During the most contentious stretch of the Democratic
presidential primary campaign last winter, then-candidate Hillary Clinton
mocked Barack Obama for his pledge to transcend Washington’s entrenched
partisanship.

“The sky will open. The lights will come down. Celestial choirs will be
singing and everyone will know we should do the right thing and the world
will be perfect!” Clinton bellowed.

Obama dismissed Clinton’s sarcasm as overly cynical and further evidence
she was a creature of Washington. But as President Obama prepares to make
his first major address to Congress, Clinton’s comments are borne out.

For a candidate who won the White House on a mantle of bringing the
country’s two political parties together, Washington could not be more
divided on Obama’s initial weeks in the Oval Office and the policies he
has put in place.

Comment by Wisewoman | 2009-02-24 20:40:25

Im a Linda too. Don’t be fooled by those comments of Hillary. Believe it when I tell you that she was only repeating almost verbatim Obama’s exact words spoken at one of his rallies. The media tried to imply that she was being mean and hateful by “mocking” him but she was actually repeating his own words. I know that is almost unbelievable but one station showed him saying it then showed Hillary repeating his words.

Wonderful and painful post RRRAmy. We are the biggest losers indeed…

I thank Goldberg for speaking up, albeit belatedly. But his article will be meaningful inasmuch it changes behaviour in the media. And on that front I see NONE whatsoever so far. The MSM is still beating their chests and shouting Obama like crazed cult members… And the American people are still being
shamefully shown the Obama’s presidency and Obama, the man, through absurd rose colored glasses. It’s embarrassing…

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2009-02-23 19:59:38

But thank you for speaking up. It would have been nice had it been sooner, but I guess we’ll just have to take later…

I am stunned by those who wait until AFTER they can make a difference and then come out with the damaging information and/or criticism. Goldberg isn’t the first nor will he be the last. However, if one feels strongly about a situation, some sort of airing is in order or else there really is an ulterior motive at work. In my book, it is a decided lack of ethical standards or a desire to cash-in at some later date when knowledge of particular interest is withheld. Either way, it is not something with which one should be proud.

For want of a god-damn nail….

Comment by wodiej | 2009-02-23 21:27:28

Bernie Goldberg has been speaking out for some time about the media love affair with “The One”. While I agree with him on most all of it, make no mistake about it, this man is very conservative and is no friend of Hillary or Bill Clintons’. He will have me rooting for what he’s saying one minute and the next offending me to death. I do appreciate the fact he has been very kind toward Sarah Palin.

One thing about Goldberg, though, that makes me smile is almost without exception, he always finds a way to bring up Chris Matthews’ “thrill ran up my leg” comment that CM would probably give worlds to take back.

It might seem to some that Hillary is the biggest loser, it might seem to others that it is the public.

To a third sector it might seem that Obama is the biggest loser. The manufactured adulation that was off the charts drummed up by the likes of spitting mouth hoochie above and his hysterical andropause sidekick, seems to wane with each passing day. Obama reminds me of Mussolini, a pompous azz; and he might very well have the same trajectory, from fierce adulation to fierce hatred.

Finally, some might think the biggest loser is the MSM. How much viewership has C(rap)NN and MSNBC(rap) lost, how many viewers and readers are left that don’t view the MSM with the same respect as before the primaries, how many in the public have turned to foreign news sources to get objective “truth” on news events…

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-02-23 20:16:17

I don’t give a scrawny rat’s backside about either That One or the MSM. He deserves everything he gets and I trust it will be in spades. As for the MSM–they CHOSE to CHOOSE That One. They live by the poisonous swill they create and can die by it, for all I care. The real loser was the American electorate and, by proxy, the world at large. MSNBC and CNN can rot on the vine as well as NBC, ABC, and CBS. Hell, even Fox is a POS. Their collective aquaintance with journalism is only in passing.

And what the hell is the deal with D. L. Hughly? What the hell is thta all about? Who gives a crap what he thinks about anything. CNN has news? You could have fooled me! And MSNBO is just a bunch of fools. period.

MrX

You may find this trivial. But up here in Toronto, CANADA, a few of us conspired to cancel our CNN Cable channel — and in process lost a great classic movie channel & Turner’s classics — after we had the immense sickening task of listening to the most biased, venemous coverage of Hillary’s nomination run! Altho, I must admit, I waited till just after the ignominious Roll-call by the UnDemocratic Party..

I will never forgive Chrissy Mathews and the “take her behind a shed and beat her till dead” Olbermann. They may be gay which is fine by me, but their “man love” for the “Jock-in-Chief” (cover of Men’s Journal mag under “Trash-Talkin Prez”) was absolutely unprofessional and sickeningly obvious.

From now on, I refer to CNN/MSNBC (and all anti-Hillary media!) as “LEG THRILLERS”!

Our media became obsessed with the fame thing made possible by mass media markets. They have become an incestuous family of personalities playing the news. They are a caricature of themselves. But even though they have lost everything, we have a greater loss.

Comment by candymarl | 2009-02-23 20:43:48

Telling people “I won” and rubbing their noses in it is hardly a way to bring people together.

I think Obama just doesn’t get it. This isn’t about a game of hoops. This is about the future of a nation and it’s people. What we do does affect people around the world. Those are awesome responsibilities. Love them or hate them I think Hillary, McCain, and yes, even Biden, understand that. I’m not sure Obama ever will.

Chris Matthews and his ilk seem to have forgotten that they are the only profession given standing under the Constitution. They are supposed to be the watchdogs of government, on behalf of the people, and not advocates for a particular candidate.

All the bots thought they were voting in someone who would heal us from the wounds inflicted by the Bush regime, but they are slowly but surely starting to see that O is doing even more damage by allowing the Bush policies to stay.

I think the only reason O became a “constitutional scholar” (I choke as I write that) was to see just how far he could push the US away from the constitution and get away with it!

Comment by mary | 2009-02-24 13:41:48

Obama was never a ‘constitutional scholar” He entered Harvard at the ripe old age of 30 as an AFFIRMATIVE ACTION LAW STUDENT. He never wrote a single article for the Harvard Law Review! He was too busy playinng nice with the Republicans at hte Law Review who voted him for President of the Law Review based on his social agenda (not socialist)!

One of the great things about those supporting Obie is they are just as shallow and selfish as he is. They will throw him under the bus just as quickly as O does it to others.

As for CM, I have no use for him and am not wasting my time to watch him. He’s sick and needs serious help. The media just wanted ratings and BO was it.

Our society has been over run with a generation with no sense of right and wrong and no one making them accountable.

Comment by FLDemFem | 2009-02-23 23:35:27

Thank their parents for that. They raised them and forgot to instill any sort of conscience or caring about anything but themselves. It’s the Me generation that has come back to haunt us. We from the 60’s forgot that if we made love and not war, we were responsible for how the results turned out. Letting them grow up thinking that how they felt about themselves was more important than accomplishing anything. Self-esteem has taken the place of character in the child rearing mantras. As a result, they ended up electing someone who made them feel good about themselves, not someone who could actually do the job. As a childless person, I would like to thank all the parents of these self-indulgent people for doing this to America. Way to go, people!!

Eric Holder, Rev. Sharpton, Obama, and Prof. Dyson are the ones who cling bitterly to their color issues. Some would see it as a mental health issue.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are trying to figure out how to keep some of our retirements intact so the federal government doesn’t have to take care of us or bail us out.

Nice words, Goldberg. But, talk about a coward. He’s way too late.

I agree Buzz. When you have round table discussions about whether a sitting Senator is or is not a b*tch you’ve jumped the shark.

When there are proudly displayed tee-shirts calling a sitting Governor a c*nt and hardly a peep from the media, supporters or even detractors, the shark has died.

After that, what’s a little (false) racist accusation here and there?

Should read this: the tingle in the leg seems to be replaced by anger when $$ drains out of Matthews pockets…

Matthews: “I thought 8,000 was the floor, and it looks like 6,000 is the floor. People are angry, I’m getting angry.”

I watched a little of Glenn Beck when I got home from work today. His first week’s ratings were out – in the 5 o’clock time slot his ratings were better than MSNBC, CNBC, and CNN combined. There is much on Fox that I have learned to take with a grain of salt, but at least they are an alternative to the All Obama Always and Forever channels. And I always watch Morning Joe when I’m getting ready for work, as do many of my friends, can’t believe that Joe’s ratings aren’t much better than the rest of the clowns at that channel.

MORNING JOE was the most DECENT Fox analyst who, although critical of the so-called Dems, was fair to Hillary and never vilified her. (His mother he said likes HIllary!)…

Affirmative Action backyard barbeques. Oh, yeah, that’s surely a way to unite a country and make it color blind. Just like Affirmative Action did in schools and the workplace. My God, this is so sad.

I’m glad you are seeing some people take their Obama stickers off their cars and waking up as you say.
Out here in Southern California it is a different story; it is still Obamaland where I work and live. My hours are being cut but don’t worry! Obama is going to cut taxes!! Yeah and average of 13 a week; I’ll pay rent with that. You can’t talk to them still; every misstep the man makes is NOT HIS FAULT!!! They still bash that awful Sarah Palin with cracks like if she only had a brain. I wouldn’t work and live around these people if I didn’t have too. The sad thing is I work in a library and they talk like this. I used to think I knew them now I just go off by myself at lunch time.

Thank you Amy!
I agree whole-heartedly that the biggest loser is our trust in the democratic process!
I have always questioned the wisdom of the Electoral College, and now the media is corrupted, and Super Delegates are selecting our President.
I won’t forget, and neither will my younger family members!
This scandalous perversion of our freedom will live on!

We all said that the floor on April 15, 2009 would be 6,500 or below since BO was running.
The obvious to the business world is now the obvious to MSNBO.
The bottom is the day before the taxes are due when the American tax payer will take their money our of the market to pay their taxes.

The sucking sound you heard is the inspiration breath of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY…when they realise they have destroyed the stock market an it’s future in less than 5 months.
BO will not pay the price, the D’s will.

I guess we can expect a speech tonight “chock full” of and-um stutter-speak neuro-linguistic programming. Need to top off the kool-aid for those who are running out. The weak minded haven’t gained any more will than they had in November. They have just been away from the kool-aid pitcher. ;)

If I watch BO tonight, it will be with a stiff drink in my hand!

Comment by mary | 2009-02-24 13:49:17

Colleen

I’ll drink to that! And I will take my (oba)myopic glasses off so I don’t have to look at the “Jock-in-Chief” “Trash-Talkin” Coverboy @ Men’s Journal Mag….ugh

REV. RUBBLE ROUSER AMY!

I have just re-read your post here and let me tell you that it’s PHENOMENAL! Thanks for providing links to the CNN leg-thrillers’ REPENTANCE site. God may forgive them, but I refuse to…Their sins of omissions of Hillary’s obvious superiority as candidate (and human being) were far too trespassing….

Comment by mary | 2009-02-24 13:53:49

Sorry!

I misspelled “RABBLE” Rouser Amy….I started hitting the communion wine wayyyyy before the Jock in Chief boy starts his Monologue for the Corinthians….

I predict a Democratic bloodbath by the end of his first term, and Hillary’s lighting the wick.
