Much Love From the Republican Right

Much was made of Helen Thomas making a “Slumdog Millonaire” crack after seeing Bobby Jindal’s speech last week. How do we know she’s a blatant racist and ignoramus? It went out via Twitter. She allegedly made the statement in front of a camera crew, yet no video has come out and the precise wording of her statement remains a mystery. Did it happen? If anyone has actual confirmation by all means post it. If she said anything stupid or bigoted I’ll be the first in line criticizing her.
While we wait for that to happen, let’s turn our attention to a verifiable slur, brought to us by (of course) Ann Coulter:
Even Gov. Bobby Jindal, whom I suppose I should note was the first Indian-American to give the Republican response to a president’s speech, began with an encomium to the first black president. (Wasn’t Bobby great in “Slumdog Millionaire”?)

Ann is making a comment against the Obots for saying that every time the first black President does something (like ordering a ham sandwich from the White House kitchen) that it’s a historical event.
I don’t understand. Are you being sarcastic? The Internet often puts a barrier against that. What’s the point of this uhmmm… article?
Ann Coulter made this comment in her article dated February 26th in answer to Helen Thomas’ snide comment on February 25th, the day before.
This insinuation that Ann Coulter was intentionally making a racial slur against Bobby Jindal is absurd in its premise.
The rest of Coulter’s column is actually hilarious. Never knew she was a humorist.
I recently returned from a European business trip. While there I encountered a mother who slapped her child on his bottom in the middle of a temper tantrum. She immediately turned to me and said, “Unlike you Americans we don`t believe in a time out. I suggest it`s time you Americans slap Obama and his progressives and Bush`s neo conservatives on their bottoms and allow centrist adults to run your country. Stop condoning infantile bad behavior.”
I couldn`t have said it better. I guess that “everybody was going to love us” stuff was more media BS.
Was she a Brit? The Brits are not happy with That One.
Obama gives Brown chilly reception.
I had heard that while congratulating Chavez on his pres-for-life gig, Obama managed to insult the Brits by returning the Churchill bust that was on loan from the British government and had been placed in the Oval Office. When the Brits insisted that they would extend the loan for another four years, Obama INSISTED that they take it. What message does this send to the English?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/4623148/Barack-Obama-sends-bust-of-Winston-Churchill-on-its-way-back-to-Britain.html
Not to mention the message sent to our allies in Eastern Europe, as Obama lets them in on the secret that he will sacrifice their safety for the help of Russia on Iran. Good job. Do we have anyone left who would stand for us if we need it? Anyone? Anyone? Hmmmmm….i thought we were going to be loved around the world…..
I saw that story this morning and I was embarrassed for our country to have such a rude person in the White House. Britain is, and has been, our staunchest ally for decades, over a hundred years actually. This is the part that made me mad as hell..
Brown is the Prime Minister of Great Britain, and he deserves better than a hole-in-the-corner welcome from Obummer. I wonder what sort of greeting the African heads of state will get when they come to kiss Obummer’s ring. Anyone want to bet they get all the bells and whistles? But Brown, who heads up the government of our oldest ally, gets dissed in no uncertain terms. Who briefed the idiot in the White House on protocol? Anyone at all? Anyone???
However rude Obama was to Brown, I don’t believe that Obama treated him differently than he would anyone else. If Obama is on stage, he is incapable of sharing the spotlight with anyone, he has a pathological need to hog all of the attention. When I watched Joe Biden giving his VP nomination speech I remember thinking that Obama must have really been squirming at the thought that Biden was the man of the hour. Biden’s hour of glory was cut quite short though, at the moment he was joined by his wife and children on stage to receive his ovation, out popped Obama like a jack-in-the-box to shift all the attention onto himself, robbing poor Joe and his family of their moment of fame.
He is also very careful to avoid any unscripted situations, he doesn’t want to risk another Joe the plumber moment. He mustn’t let slip his true beliefs, that would only enrage people that are currently bewildered, but manageable.
I saw Brown’s speech in Europe a couple days ago when he said he was going to be telling the US that it needed to stand up and lead the charge for the global economy recovery. Of course, that means providing the $$$$$$$$$$$$. I am shocked, but I actually am glad Obama was not all lovey to Brown. Imagine if Obama decided to go along with Brown - the US giving up control of our economic and monetary policies by joining a global club while footing most of the bill, just like the UN.
It was the nitwit centrists that gave us Obama. The outcomes of Presidential elections are almost always determined by the wishy washy “swing” voters. Once it was a given that the hard core left was securely in Obama’s pocket, he superficially moved to the center to butter up the centrists. They bought his act and put him in the White House. So if anyone deserves to have their fannies paddled it would be the centrists that wander around in the fog of a nebulous ideology, an ideology that causes them to fall for every ephemeral fad that comes along.
Sorry to disagree, but if the conservatives had come out and voted (record shows they didn’t), we would have McCain right now, instead of the inept guy we got.
Yes, there was some of that, but since McCain is a centrist himself, it’s somewhat understandable that a few conservatives were not very motivated to vote. They were wrong to do so, it’s equal to throwing your vote away on a third party out of protest. Nevertheless, if two thirds of the self described independant swing voters had voted for McCain, we would have a different President today.
It’s also inaccurate to claim that the no-show conservatives would have made any difference, I have a strong suspicion that the vast majority of no-show conservatives live in hard core blue states (Cal, NY, Mass, Wash, etc.) where their vote would have had no effect. Knowing that, they stayed home.
It was the nitwit, corrupt members of the Democrat party that was behind Obama getting elected. It started with all the deal making before the primary began. Politicians behind Obama promised to keep IA first in the nation among other things (ethanol support, etc) in exchange for tilting the scale by pushing hard for Obama within the state and looking the other way when the busloads of ACORN thugs came across the border to “caucus” for Obama, ensuring his win in IA.
With an IA caucus loss and the NH primary loss Obama would have been toast. There is no way that IA residents would have chosen Obama over Clinton and Edwards with his empty “Yes we can” speeches and his inability, especially back then, to answer basic political questions. Iowans are invaded every four years and know when a candidate is an inexperienced, slick, empty suit.
It was a Democratic year - the issue isn’t who won between the Repub and Dem. The issue is: Who was behind the corruption that ensured Obama got to be the Dem’s nominee?
“nitwit, currupt members of the Democrat party”? With this I can’t argue. I just consider them as a constant in voting calculations.
Interesting how she had a prepared speech handy.
Yes, that does stretch credulity.
No she was Italian.
that is surprising. i rarely see an italian mother spank, much less discipline their child. My SIL is like the only one i have ever seen! usually the kids here run around like banshees, with no limits.
germany is like night and day as far as kids are concerned. kids are SO well behaved in Germany. here, not so much… spoiled until their 40’s or later. haha
Well, I think her comment did exactly what she intended - caused a ruckus, and will prove a point.
I also think her comment is a direct sarcastic slam to the comments that others have made towards Jindal, which went virtually unnoticed (just my guess). Her comment, however, is spreading like wildfire, and getting attention, which I guess, will prove her point.
Liberal radio talk show host Mike Malloy’s wife Kathy Bay mocked Gov. Bobby Jindal using an East Indian accent. Jindal gave the Republican response to Obama’s address earlier this week.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2009/02/malloy_jindal_indian.html
In an interview with Curtis Sliwa on ABC Radio last night, the host and RNC Chairman Michael Steele jokingly linked Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to the film “Slumdog Millionaire.” Steele offered Jindal “slum love.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0209/Steele_offers_Jindal_slum_love.html
And of course, the rumored Helen Thomas comment.
But, is that even really a slur? Is that any worse than comparing Jindal to Kennneth the Page?
“In it, they say Jindal “sounded creepily like a monologue from Kenneth the Page, 30 Rock’s bewildered hillbilly.” They go on to say that Jindal “just couldn’t quit with the wide-eyed ‘aww, shucks,’ Howdy-Doody delivery, apparently rehearsed in front of a Kindergarten class.”
Or more insulting than Matthews’ *Oh god* comment as Jindal walked out, before he even opened his mouth?
Anne is kind of annoying (and is another one that I think should cover up those arms!! Holy Hannah, they are long!), but if you can get past her mannerisms and her odd speech style, I often have a hard time disagreeing with her point. I kind of hate to have her making it, because I think that people have a visceral reaction to her and often miss the real point. Anyhoo, I think you’re right that she was pointing out the hypocrisy of the left making fun of Bobby Jindal and his ethnicity ala Mike Malloy. But of course, it will only be used against conservatives. It’s okay to say if you’re from the left, because you can’t be racist if you’re a Dem, right?
Did I miss it, or did you guys talk about what went on at the Detroit City Council meeting with the wife of John Conyers, City Council President Monica Conyers?
If you haven’t read this article, it’s absolutely chilling what “unity” has done to this nation:
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090301/OPINION03/903010308/1008/OPINION01
Is it just me, or does that scare you?
that woman (conyers) is a LOON! i was looking for a vid of this yesterday, and came across a bunch of videos of her. She is crazy. Nice city council…
I used to haaaaaaaaaate ann coulter. then i started listening to her. she isn’t so bad, when you actually listen to her, and not the liberal MSM version of her. She definitely says controversial things, and I am no defender of her, she can do that on her own, but she makes some great points.
It’s not just Conyers. I think it’s a symptom of a larger evil. When folks feel comfortable telling white people to GO HOME, and that jobs for WHITE PEOPLE are unimportant, and that WHITE PEOPLE should not say the name of the President, I’d say we’ve got a problem. Where are Al and Jesse, marching against this blatant racism?
The real funny thing is, Monica and John, defenders of the African American population of the City of Detroit, haters of all things white, send their son outside the city, to one of the (formerly, maybe) richest suburbs in the country to a school for the elite that costs more than most people in Detroit make in a year. I would bet that the racial content of the school would not reflect their bias toward the African American population. Fix the Detroit schools? Why? Our kid is doing just fine, and besides, it’s easier to keep the uneducated voting for us that way.
oh, agreed! it was unbelievable! i was reacting to the videos i saw of her other meetings. but this one was terrible. i wish i could find the video.
There’s a lot of folks looking for it. Suspiciously absent. Odd?
As I type, I hear Ken Cockrel is going to veto the Cobo decision, and Monica says she’ll take it to court. Monica was on the radio this morning defending what she said. She says she not racist, she just saw that the folks setting up for the auto show weren’t black. Hmmmmm. I’m not buying what she’s selling, but then again she doesn’t care. I don’t live in the city and I’m white (embarassingly so) anyway.
Anyway, she doesn’t get the economics of hosting a show like the Auto Show or any of the other programs that could be hosted there. No one who goes to the Auto show frequents businesses owned by or who employs African-Americans? Not the restaurants, or the hotels, or the transportation system (such as it is), or anything? Wow. To say nothing of trying to convince people that it’s really safe to go down there.
The only people I see really investing in the city day in and day out are the Ilitch family, and Karmanos (both, oddly, white). I dunno, maybe I missed the Jesse Jackson enterprises popping up?
DCM:
“Slumdog millionare” - Is this word kind of derogatory, or even less than respectable when used to describe Governor Bobby Jindal ? Supposing so, then is it inappropriate when used on a ‘real’ slumdog ?
This rather tangential question in context of present present post, but it adds to previous conversions and that “hysteria” blog post, on which I thought there was a disagreement
Thanks for reading it.
She wrote “wasn’t Bobby great in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’”? I guess all Indians look alike to Ann. But it looks like her many defenders find that funny.
Thanks for the clarification, I can see your argument.
American Girl in Italy, I also heard plenty of Jew bashing while I was in Europe and it was not confined to Italy. I heard it in France and Germany also. IT WAS NOT ONLY ISRAELI BASHING. People were specifically targeting progressive Jews. I would be interested in hearing your experiences as I am very worried about this behavior. This is very dangerous!
I don’t hear *jew bashing* but I hear people discuss that the division of land is wrong, and that Isaelis do a lot of bad things, wrt attacks, etc. but play the victim. That is usually what I hear, when the issues are discussed. There is sympathy for both sides, for the people, but not so much for the government. I have also had discussions with people who feel the problem is all the fault of the UN/US for giving the Jewish people the land. (just telling you what I hear). I don’t get a lot of exposure to people on this, but I do sense more sympathy with the Palestines than the Israelis, when the issues come up. But, I am certainly in no capacity to speak for all the people! that is just my experience.
Coulter plays this game all the time. She either says or writes something scandalous that a liberal has said prior, then when she gets called out and attacked on it, she points out that those weren’t her words, they were “liberal X’s” words (in this case, Helen Thomas).
She does this for two reasons. First because the offending statement by a liberal usually goes without any outrage from the media, so Coulter draws attention to it. Second, to point out liberal hypocrisy.
I think you’re right. She is not insulting Jindal (she is much too smart for that). She is mocking the liberal left. It is her way of saying this is what they see in him, a slumdog who made good.
I’ll just say the same thing I did in the other thread. I don’t find this funny coming from either side. However, I find it disgusting that so many Democrats think they have free pass to use these type of comments because they’re supposed to be progressive. We all witnessed just how progressive they are in their treatment of Hillary. Which is why many of us are only supporting candidates from here on out and not a party.
I am not racist at all but if the Republicans are looking to Jindal as a Republican Obama match up then they’re barking up the wrong tree! Jindal is no Republican party leader. I’m still wondering why everyone is looking to minorities now as some saving grace for a political party… The guy who can save the Republicans next go around is going to be Mitt Romney…
