the mother of all spin – obama didn’t bow

I have heard and seen a lot of spin the past couple of years, but this has got to be the mother load of all spin. Can they actually be serious? *It wasn’t a bow, it was a double handshake for a short guy.* (I’m paraphrasing.)

Did they not see the video? It wasn’t even a double handshake! And you know what?

It WASN’T a bow. It was a curtsy!

(One of our readers said that on my previous post, *obama bends over for the saudis*) and they are RIGHT!)

A bow is a bend at the waist. This was a full on knee bending curtsy.

bowing-to-saudi-king-s1

That was the most ridiculous spin, ever.

The left is working overtime to defend Obama, deny the curtsy, and talk of it’s irrelevance. However, Bush holding hands with the King was apparently news and snark worthy.

Bush: Holding hands with the Saudis for nothing – Seattle PI

Abdullah-Bush Stroll Strikes Nerve – Images Of Leaders Holding Hands Doesn’t Sit Well With Americans – CBS News

David Letterman mocked Bush on his top ten, calling him gay. (But Dave can find NOTHING to criticize about Obama?)

Barbara Walters on 20/20 asked King Abdullah about holding hands with Bush, and he explained it is a sign of friendship. His comments on bowing are interesting, though. “KING ABDULLAH: I have tremendous distaste for such matters because I believe that one only bows before one’s God, not before another human being.” (when he said *that one* do you think he meant Obama?)

Brian Williams was still talking about it in 2007.

The New York Times wrote about it. Newsweek. Time.

So I guess, when a Republican does something (that is actually actual protocol), it generates negative news coverage, but when Obama does something that is out of protocol, and according to the King, distasteful, you only hear about it on FOX.

Camille Paglia from Salon.com chalks it up to staffing issues. (that would sure fit in well with Obama’s habit of blaming his staff for everything…)

“Obama’s staffing problems are blatant — from that bleating boy of a treasury secretary to what appears to be a total vacuum where a chief of protocol should be. There has been one needless gaffe after another — from the president’s tacky appearance on a late-night comedy show to the kitsch gifts given to the British prime minister, followed by the sweater-clad first lady’s over-familiarity with the queen and culminating in the jaw-dropping spectacle of a president of the United States bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia. Why was protest about the latter indignity confined to conservatives? The silence of the major media was a disgrace. But I attribute that embarrassing incident not to Obama’s sinister or naive appeasement of the Muslim world but to a simple if costly breakdown in basic command of protocol.”

While I agree with Camille’s comments that these events were tacky, and the media has been disgraceful, I am not sure if the problems can be blamed soley on the lack of a protocol officer. I don’t have a chief of protocol and I knew that the gifts were tacky, the appearance on Leno was the wrong place, wrong time, with very wrong comments, and I know not to be so touchy feely with the Queen (and I wouldn’t have blocked Prince Philip out of the photo either, especially if I towered over him – how tall ARE they?). And I wouldn’t have kept my back to the press pool either. But that’s just me… (I don’t want pictures of my behind!)

And I highly doubt I would bow to the King of Saudi Arabia. If I bowed to anyone, it would have been the Queen. So, this just sounds like yet another round of excuses for Obama.

It was a bow and scrape – the right leg going “scraping” backward…

But isn’t it interesting that no reporter would even think of settling the controversy by asking Obama himself!

Definition I just found (but he didn’t do the arms correctly: to bow and scrape (third-person singular simple present bows and scrapes, present participle bowing and scraping, simple past and past participle bowed and scraped)

to make a deep bow with the right leg drawn back (thus scraping the floor), left hand pressed across the abdomen, right arm held aside.
(figuratively) to show excessive politeness or servility.

Comment by lorac | 2009-04-08 22:05:42

A curtsey (also spelled curtsy) is a traditional gesture of greeting, in which a woman bends her knees while bowing her head. It is the female equivalent of male bowing in Western cultures. The word “curtsy” is a phonological change from “courtesy” known in linguistics as syncope.

He didn’t just bow his head, he bent his whole body over, so I vote for “bow”/bow and scrape.

And the White House must really think we’re stupid. The Queen is much shorter than this King, so this meme about Obama’s height making it *seem* like a bow is ridiculous. This same logic would mean he should have been 3/4 bent over for the queen.

Comment by felizarte | 2009-04-08 23:14:00

It is a bow! Probably from his childhood conditioning to show reverence for Saudi Arabia’s titular head of Islam.

I wonder what it would take for America to wake up.

Comment by NoBamaNoWay | 2009-04-09 05:43:17

i think that’s exactly what it was. at least when bush held hands with the saudi king (or whoever it was), it certainly was not his own (bush’s) idea; it was a saudi custom and bush just went along with it. ozero’s bow seems to be something that he truly felt, and he simply acted on his instincts.

Comment by RPL | 2009-04-09 07:02:32

I ran the phrase “President Barack Obama” through an anagram generator. One of the anagrams that came back was “an arab backed imposter.”

Which could mean nothing.
Or explain a lot.

Comment by Elizabeth | 2009-04-09 02:18:52

The torso remains straight, or only slightly lowered, in a curtsy ; it is the knees that are bent, and one leg is normally overlapping the other, back and to the opposite side of your body. Hands are also either clasping the skirt in front, or behind at the waist.

So, how stupid do they think we are, really ? The White House claimed Obama was shaking the kings hand with both hands. Only problem is, the double handshake, lifting his left hand to grab the king’s hand, comes only after he straightens up. Hunched over, there’s absolutely no doubt the president has his left hand down his side while the king takes his right hand to shake it.

What Obama did was a big, low bow/scrape. You have to be blind not to see it.

Comment by American Girl in Italy | 2009-04-09 06:10:25

(I was poking fun, not actually defining the bow as a curtsy.)

Comment by Karma | 2009-04-08 22:33:07

Well, he IS always breaking protocol.

So he kept his left arm aside…bowed…..and then shook hands with his right hand and then the left.

Breaking both the American protocol and the Saudi King’s protocol at the same time he was blending them.

A world class tool….lol….who doesn’t seem to think he is really President. Can now offend twice as many people on both sides of the ocean.

Didn’t the constitutional law lecturer get the pamphlet that US Presidents don’t bow to royalty?

I agree with the WH. It wasn’t a bow. 0bama was merely giving the saudi king a “Larry Sinclair”.

I would bow to Queen Elizabeth as a mark of respect to her even though it would not be required as I am not a British subject.

In watching 0 and Meeechelle I feel as though I am watching them in their own fantasy adventure that confirms the view they have of themselves as special people because of their special qualities. They aren’t special.

As far as Meeechelle’s fashion sense, it is a reflection of who she wants to appear be whereas with Jackie Kennedy it was a reflection of her and her values. The 0s are not in the same league.

Comment by lorac | 2009-04-08 22:29:46

I don’t think I would. I would show her respect in my own way, like nodding my head, or speaking politely, or using a formal term of address. But in almost 50 years, the only time I’ve ever seen people bowing or curtsying is on the old movie channel in stuff from the 30s.

I hear a lot about cultural competence, and it usually means us doing things the way someone from another culture wants. But I’m starting to feel that other cultures should start becoming culturally competent, themselves, and let us be ourselves, not just them being allowed to be themselves….

Comment by elise | 2009-04-09 03:22:01

lorac, I agree with everything you said above except not recognizing other cultures when we are visitors in their countries. However, bowing isn’t part of Saudi culture and they weren’t even in Saudi Arabia. Looking at the video, it would appear those around him were bemused by his bow also. When I first saw it, I thought he was kissing the King’s ring and as far as I know, that isn’t done for anyone other than the Pope.

I guess the WH missed the part where his left arm was at his side during the “not” bow and he didn’t take the kings hand with BOTH of his until after he stood up from said Non bow
Also the Queen is about a foot shorter than King of Saudi but he managed to shake her hand with BOTH of his and only had to bow at the neck, amzing isn’t it.

Did Bagdad Bob become DC bob?

Exactly AGI. The disgusting silence of the enabling media is deafening. What a bunch of cowards, traitors to their profession and the American people.

And the WH? Who are they kidding? Is it arrogance they can get away with whatever given the fawning media? Maybe but I am tired of they treating the public as stupid:

If it looks like a bow, bends like a bow and scraps like in a bow, then it’s a bow.

The two videos here tell it all (by the way look closely at PBO’s left hand hanging while bowing and shaking with his right hand, only).

Comment by mel | 2009-04-08 22:21:12

It was no bow to the Saudi King, Obama just wanted a good sniff of the camel sweat between the Saudi Kings thighs, is that so wrong? After all, camels are on Obama’s list of enviromental programs for the American fools who elected him as messiah.

If you listen carefully to the prior talk between Obama and the Saudi King, the King mentioned how his camels leave a scent like fine Mercedes leather on his thighs!

So stop attacking Obama for his constant seeking the right things for the American people!

Comment by Andy | 2009-04-08 22:21:29

Comment by beachnan | 2009-04-08 22:21:43

Honestly, the White House thinks we will buy into anything they put forward, since Obama is just a product being marketed. How long will it take the public to figure out they are being served a load of crap. People need to trust themselves-if it looks, like crap, smells like crap, tastes like crap, it must be CRAP! Thank you FOX for covering this. Apparently, the rest of the media is still in coverup mode. A total bend at the waist when greeting someone is a bow, period, end of subject!!

I’m sorry but I just have to comment on that video with the Queen–Michelle’s outfit is so unflattering and ordinary looking. From Wikipedia:

Among Muslims, the left hand is reserved for bodily hygiene and considered unclean. Thus, the right hand should be used for eating. Shaking hands or handing over an item with one’s left hand is an insult.

So double handshaking with the right and left hand would also be an insult.

Comment by oowawa | 2009-04-08 23:32:44

Interesting! That must be where the old expression comes from: “Never let your right hand know what your left hand is doing . . . ” Of course, O is left-handed . . . hmmmm–is there a stigma to being left-handed “among Muslims”? I was joking, but now I’m wondering. . .

Comment by Docelder | 2009-04-08 23:47:02

Interesting thought. I was of the understanding, you would not be completely left handed in Muslim countries because you can’t eat or drink with the left hand. It is believed that “Satan eats and drinks with his left hand”.

Well, if the press didn’t criticize Obama’s decades long membership in Jeremiah Wright’s church and his decades long friendship with Fr Pfleger, then I guess bowing and scraping to the Royal Saudis is no big deal. How else can Obama unite the world in one gleeful song of joy, if he doesn’t have his nose up everyone’s.

Oh, and I thought Camile Paglia was supposed to be a sophisticate sublime. Obama’s protocol people are probably doing exactly what Obama’s handlers want them to do. It’s all image Camile. People see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear, and block out the rest. There aren’t very many of us who even try to think. Don’t make excuses for this clown…this New Millenium version of that sanctimonious idiot, Jimmy Carter.

And that doesn’t mean there should not be justice for the Palestinians.

I am not sure if the problems can be blamed soley on the lack of a protocol officer. …

Not to mention that any grade-school child knows that ‘America bows to no king but God.’ And going to grade school in other countries is no excuse. My husband grew up largely in Indonesia and Malaysia, and he knew that one.

Neither does the flag. Ever. This from Wiki..I remembered the story, but not all the details, and went to find a copy of it. Here it is..

This tradition may come from the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, where countries were asked to dip their flag to King Edward VII: the American flag bearer did not. Team captain Martin Sheridan is famously quoted as saying “this flag dips to no earthly king”, though the true provenance of this quotation is unclear

These are all square dance moves. Look at the picture at the top of the page. I guess I have to do some spin for Bush. I’ve watched the hand holding incident many times and I never gotten the impression that Bush was being servile. Just the opposite. His body language clearly shows that he was actually the dominant and more vibrant figure that was lending assistance to a frail and unsteady elderly person. It’s much the same way that Boy Scouts help little old ladies to cross the street. Reading more than that into it is silly.

0bama’s movements clearly showed submissive behavior; he rolled over and showed his soft underbelly, and showed the World that we have a spineless wimp leading our country.

Passive aggressive behavior, exactly right. Like touching a Muslim king with your “unclean” hand? Most anybody watching the clip is talking about the bow. What is missed in discussion is the left handed touch of the “unclean” hand to the king’s “clean” hand. Don’t say he did not know exactly what he is doing. I have been torn wondering whether this couple are the biggest rubes we have ever had occupy the White House i.e. inappropriate touching of the Muslim king or the British Queen as an example… or whether they are just uncontrollably passive aggressive.

Uncomfortable yes, the President of the United States just put his poo hand on his hand. You would think that Obama would know better. Either this was some passive aggressive action, or maybe we don’t know anything about this man at all?

Comment by lorac | 2009-04-09 01:24:21

The king was probably uncomfortable because he outlawed bowing a while back, saying men should only bow to god. No one bows to this king.

Except Obama.

I guess “everything you need to know about foreign policy and relations” he learned from ages 6-10 n Indonesia….. too bad it’s outdated….

It was either a major HUMMER or we’re in major trouble.

Comment by Baba Rum Raisin | 2009-04-09 14:21:00

Everything I could say on this would be excessively scatological, even for this site. So craft your own, based upon and crafted around the term, “Reach-Around.”

Please King…..we promise not to drill for oil in America anymore and only buy oil from you….what a pathetic sack of shit this guy is ….right bots?

Comment by I'mFedUp | 2009-04-09 00:00:37

For the love of God…anyone who still supports this loser isn’t human. Stepford Bots is what I say.

PS LMAO Harp (as usual). I think OFraud’s energy plan (if you’re ignorant enough to call it that) is worse than Carter’s and will shoot oil to astronomic highs. Oops, I guess that’s what he wants since he’s sucking off the Saudis.

The king held his hand high for Barack – Barack took it and then lowered the king’s hand and proceeded to bow.

Funny the WH is now lying – they must be a little worried.

Comment by Peggy Sue | 2009-04-09 01:43:20

You think??

The explanations are ridiculous. When will politicians learn to tell the truth? You know, like okay guys I made a mistake. Just once, the truth. It would be so refreshing.

Oh no, we get–he bent over to pick something up, it was a curtsy [strange], a double handshake [whatever that is] or my favorite [though the Obama folks didn't use it] from Andrew: the Saudi King was wearing shoe mirrors [that jokester] and Obama couldn’t resist looking at his own reflection.

That still makes me laugh.

These people need to get a grip. If they can’t handle this, God only knows what surprises we’ll have around the corner.

Comment by sarainitaly | 2009-04-09 05:09:03

I know. The fact that the White House has to NOW totatlly LIE about the bow shows how bad it actually is.

Instead of saying he did it out of respect or whatever, they totally LIED!!!!!!

THAT means he really f’ed up.

Comment by TexasMirth | 2009-04-09 02:17:40

Obama bowed. The world saw him. He embarrassed America.
It didn’t appear to bother him one bit. “What? Me worry?”
He is a disgrace.

AGII ~ You’re one of my favorites of all time and I know you don’t mean it this way but I’d caution the use of the headline with “Spin” in it. We have become so conditioned to never use the term LIE in politics, it’s astounding.

This is not spin. Spin is nuance, argument over a phrase and it’s meaning.

Saying a goose is a cow is not spin.

Saying the POUTUS didn’t “bow” in this case, but rather bent over from the waist with head down until he was in a supplicating posture is not spin. It’s not semantics. It’s a bald face falsehood.

See, even I shy from it.

It’s a lie. And a sham. We have to stop giving someone credit for the mere act of being willing to say something. We much prefer to “disagree” on things. That sound politic. When we go to the “lie” we have to question motives and basic honesty. We don’t like doing that. We don’t like to believe that public figures will actually, flat out, lie if it suits their purpose. That shakes us to the foundation of our belief in our system of government.

Yet, politicians have been lying for centuries.

We need to get over it and call a duck a cat, I mean, call a duck a duck and a cat a cat. This is a VERY hard habit to break.

Comment by sarainitaly | 2009-04-09 05:11:32

yes, you are right. it was a bold faced lie.

Comment by bayareavoter | 2009-04-09 03:02:53

BOW WOW.

What’s the old saying: don’t believe your lying eyes?

With Pravda as the new American MSM you’ll just have to pretend you didn’t see it!

Comment by DAB | 2009-04-09 07:54:38

Exactly — and our MSM hasn’t been forced to be propaganda machines — they took that role on themselves. Very sad and spooky…

funny comments….I saw Miller last night on O’Reilly and he was PISSED. It is obvious he feels strongly about women being disrepected.

By the way…this was a BOW WOW by Obama. Yep, no Bots here on this one.

Comment by Thinker | 2009-04-09 22:53:07

He bowed and she touched the queen. Both no-nos. So that’s makes them both imperfect which is what is probably tormenting obama the most, mr. overachiever/perfect god that he is. Again. both no-nos no matter what spin you put on it.

Comment by LAUREN | 2009-04-09 12:38:56

Only a Muslim should bow to the Saudi king.

Comment by FLDemFem | 2009-04-09 20:41:18

The King says otherwise. He says one should bow only to God. And he has said it publicly, and often.

Comment by Lyn | 2009-04-09 14:03:50

find it funny Ben smith shows a pic (AND so of course ALL the Bots are running around saying it) …lookie lookie Bush bowed too, (you know whenever Barky is doing something wrong, his first defense was but… but.. Hillary… then but bt McCain (or Sarah) and Now they “moved on” to but but Bush)with a still pic of what “looks” like Bush is bowing to the king , (slightly altho it’s more of a bend from the neck and not full bow from the waist)BUT totally ignores the fact that if you click on the picture to watch the video, Bush is bending so the Saudi King can place a medal around his neck, since Bush is taller too. but they pretend it is the same as Barky’s full bow (with his left hand at his side, not in the Kings hand) and “I” don’t even like Bush and NEVER voted for either Bush http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0409/About_the_bow.html

and the other big talking point, when the world is LAUGHING at this lie, was it wasn’t and “official” statement from the WH so it doesn’t count.

Comment by sarainitaly | 2009-04-09 18:32:51

they are simply idiotic.
