Instead of just acknowledging an error, Robert Gibbs lied about it, and all but dared the media to report it. CNN isn’t the only media outlet taking the challenge, either. The Chicago Sun-Times scolds Obama for his display, now that the White House tried to spin it:

That said, the president of the United States does not bow to kings. He is not only the chief of government, he’s our head of state — the equal of any monarch. The White House says Obama didn’t bow, that he “grasped (Abdullah’s) hand with two hands and he’s taller than King Abdullah.”
Sorry, but a videotape on YouTube doesn’t quite back that up. Obama clearly bends his body toward the Arabian monarch, and Obama doesn’t grasp both the king’s hands until he’s standing straight up. As for the he’s-taller argument, the 6-foot-1-inch Obama towers over a lot of people, so we’d have seen him bowing during handshakes many times if that were the explanation. Furthermore, the king had his hand extended, so Obama didn’t have to reach down an inordinate amount to grab it.
Heads of state do not bow to other heads of state. Abdullah didn’t reciprocate with a bow to Obama, for instance, and none of the other heads of state in the original video did so much as a shoulder incline. It’s the act of a rank amateur, a man unprepared to represent a nation as head of state. Thankfully, a few people have begun to notice it.

Perhaps it was a simple gaffe and it is now being over-interpreted. If so, perhaps we should “get a life” as you say, JG, and leave it alone in the same spirit that Obamaphiles so graciously forewent and forego comment on any statement or action that could be contorted into racist code.

Watched a BBC program today – a sort of round table, where they invite foreign journalists to comment on the political stories – 3 of the 4 were Muslim journalists, and there was one American. All of them were in raptures of delight that 0bama has revealed his ‘Muslim roots’ and they congratulated him on hiding it during the election campaign. So, they’re in no doubt that he is one of them, and let’s face it, with the diabolical refusal of the US msm to report and analyze 0bama, it may take a while for main stream Americans to have any chance of cottoning on to what’s really going on.
We all knew he was a Muslim. Funny but what would it take? His admission on ABC about his “Muslim faith?” The pics, the registration as a “Muslim” at the school in Indonesia? This is exactly what many people have been saying since the video was first available. The length to which some will rationalize this gross violation of protocol is disgusting. Our head of state and Commander-in-Chief do not bow. Ever. And no one bows to her/him. Ever. While trying to trivialize this offensive gaff some people have made it very clear that they have no idea of the symbolic importance of the Presidency to the American people. I wonder if they respect anything.
Another point for the WH to consider is do not flip off CNN. This is the second time in a couple of weeks that the press rep has been quite snide to their guy and I think they are tired of it.

Agreed. If I were the reporter, I’d say regarding the bow (anyone can see it for what it is), why is the White House now claiming it isn’t a bow, and then focus the story on that–the denial. Some people might learn or be reminded of a few things about United States history.

This Democrat fought tooth and nail writing to superdelegates and the media so that 0 would NOT be nominated. Moos generally does tongue in cheek pieces so CNN could have provided a more serious assessment of this gross faux pas. I did see a brief discussion about it between Blitzer, Dana Perino and Donna Brazille though. Not surprisingly Brazille glossed over the matter and said she didn’t know if it were a bow or not but clearly seemed uncomfortable. Perino felt that the post denial made it much worse than it otherwise would be.
You have to wonder, with all of the rumors regarding the connections between Obama and Islam WHY he would perform in this way. Perhaps, now that he is in office he just doesn’t give a damn, or maybe (like a Freudian slip) it reflected a deeply rooted compulsion.
Whatever it is, I believe it takes some of the gloss off of his international jaunt — in addition to his lack of actual accomplishment.
You have to ask yourself, if a Head of State from another country took it upon himself to prance around our country, holding rallies in public squares and turning a serious meeting into a frat party, how would we, and our President feel? Moreover, Abdullah holds a variety of positions that deserve and require recognition-king; custodian of the holy mosques of Mecca and Medina; elder statesman of the Arab world; son of the founder of his country.</strong

Julie, one of the problems is 0bama’s selective bowing – you’ll note he didn’t bow to the Queen of England, but did bow to the despotic Saudi King. I could buy your argument if he was an equal opportunity bower – clearly he is not, he is choosy about which Royals he will bow to – King of a non-democratic, Muslim country warrants an 0bama bow, Queen of a democratic Christian country doesn’t make the grade. The President of the US is not supposed to bow, thus be subserviant to any leader. They are equal. If that were not the case, why would obama not bow to Queen Elizabeth.

TOP TWENTY-TWO EXCUSES FOR OBAMA’S ROYAL BOW
It seems that there is a slim possibility that the Royal Bow seen around the world may in fact jump the US domestic news blackout and get some attention in the President’s own country.
Politico’s Ben Smith asked the first question, swallowed the anonymous answer whole, and then went on to refer to Obama’s “dipping toward the king” (first link below). Sorry Ben, “dipping” is what he offered the Queen of England along with her Ipod. This was another thing altogether.
But in the interest of communal harmony, I’ve come up with some alternate excuses for anonymous White House staffers to try out. The Top Twenty-two Excuses for the Royal Bow:
22. There was a shiny new riyal on the floor, which is change he can believe in. Also, fiscal responsibility.
21. Double-checking the correct words of greeting for the king in his new, shoe-mounted miniature teleprompter.
20. SOICS (Sudden Onset Intestinal Cramp Syndrome)
19. “It’s not a bow. Your eyes are lying to you. How do I say that in Austrian?”
18. Needed a closer look at Abdullah’s name tag.
17. Sore back from carrying all that American guilt around everywhere he goes.

1. As a good and respectful boy growing up in Indonesia, he was taught the proper way for polite children to greet an elder: Handshake (right hand only, please), touch forehead to back of elder’s hand. A light kiss of the hand is nice if it’s a lady, for example your grandmother.
The anonymous White House staffer told only half the story. He did need to bend way down in order to reach the king’s hand — with his forehead.
Agam still does this for one person only, his ibu (mum) in Aceh. Before he passed away just after tsunami, bapak (I miss him so much) also always got the forehead to hand treatment every time I greeted them after a long absence. Children will do this for any adult when their parents say, for example, “Give salam to Uncle Agam.” It’s part of the expected good manners. Grown-ups will do it for their parents, grandparents, or someone else who is older, very close and highly esteemed when meeting after a long absence.
Addendum: Prince Alwaleed bin Talal is the same Saudi prince (nephew of King Abdullah) who had offered Mayor Rudy Giulliani $10 million after the September 11 attacks, as well as the suggestion that U.S. policies had caused them. Mayor Giulliani figuratively threw the cheque back in his face.
