Pope Nixes Kennedy as Ambassador to Vatican

BO really has personnel problems, doesn’t he? Even so, this one will make your jaw drop. The Telegraph (UK) is reporting that the Vatican has rejected Obama’s pick for US ambassador to the Vatican.

The pick? Caroline Kennedy.

Vatican sources told Il Giornale that their support for abortion disqualified Ms Kennedy and other Roman Catholics President Barack Obama had been seeking to appoint.

“Other Roman Catholics President Barack Obama had been seeking to appoint.” Huh. That’s a rebuff, if ever I’ve heard one. It certainly suggests ANY choice he might make in this area will be unacceptable to the Vatican. Kind of “Dude, we don’t like your people.”

The Italian paper said that the Vatican strongly disapproved of Mr Obama’s support for abortion and stem cell research.

So, why does the Vatican decide to do this now? And to such a high profile would-be ambassador? Kennedy would certainly have brought attention to Vatican positions and issues of importance to Catholics in general. The daughter of the first Catholic president would seem to be a nice choice.

But apparently not. Interesting. When was the last time the Vatican made a move like this?

I swear, you folks, including our host, Larry, deserve to be back under shrub Bush. How’d you like his gutting of FOIA? How’d you like the lies that put us back were the British were in 1930, trying to govern Iraq through puppet “leaders?” How’d you like the suspending of habeas? How’d you like the torture perpetrated in your name? How’d you like a President who invented a new and NOT better, English language? How’d you like shrub’s penchant for gutting federal regulatory agencies that was the last step in leading to the financial debacle? Try using at least TWO neurons in syntax. That is all it takes to determine just how much better off we are with Obama as our President than we were only a few scant months ago.

So this is the newest Obama apologist at NOQ?

Hey James: you want to talk about Bush?

How do you like Obama’s expansion of Bush’s secrecy laws (so that he is beyond the courts)?

How do you like his expansion of Bush’s faith-based initiatives (a clear violation of church-state separation)?

How do you like his support of his biggest contributors–Goldman Sachs, Fannie & Freddie, and the other big banks & corporations–at the expense of the taxpayer?

How do you like his support of a Cyberterrorist Act so that the spying can now extend to the internet?

And please stop citing rigged polls (CBS/NY Times?! Puh-leaze)–as if they mean anything. Bush’s numbers were just as high and higher at this point in his term. Besides, most of us here actually adhere to principles and Democratic principles, not popular opinion, which has been shown to be sorely lacking in judgment or depth.

One day after he was sworn in as president of the United States and in the same week signing executive orders ushering in a new era of government transparency, Barack Obama’s Justice Department quietly filed a motion in federal court to dismiss a long-running lawsuit that sought to force the Bush administration to recover as many as 15 million missing White House emails.

I think the real question is the reverse: “When is the last time a President made a move like this?” C’mon Barky- three times? Make a mutually acceptable appointment and be done with it. This overarching game of his- trying to stand toe to toe with the Catholic Church to see who blinks first is getting old. Makes you think though- how many of the other “unfilled” ambassador posts are because he is appointing people who won’t be received?

Comment by pk812 | 2009-04-12 09:47:44

Quite frankly the most pressing need currently is not for an ambassador to a religious entity, despite the need for bobo to reward sweet caroline for her support, but rather for the chosen one to get fitted for some long pants, order in 6-8 seals to swim up under the dingy and take care of business.

Comment by James Guglielmino | 2009-04-12 09:50:02

This would, of course, be the very same Vatican that did NOTHING while priests were molesting alter boys. The Caholic Church has bigger balls than Karl Rove and that says something.
In Kansas, Governor Sebelious was also told publicly that she should NOT take communion. Sebelious is on record as opposing abortion but is also against laws that prohibit it for the obvious reasons. I would think that some of the more thoughtful Catholics would begin to speak very publicly against these kinds of inappropriate pressure on government. Yes, I was raised in the Catholic Church. No, I wasn’t abused by priests. The Catholic Church is the last church that I would attend, if I chose to attend. There are few things that I have less tolerence for than hypocricy.
This is a lose/lose situation for the President. His best approach is, if asked about it, to express disappointment over the rejection but validate the Vatican’s right to accept or not accept an appointee, and quietly, not appoint anyone else. At some point, the Vatican will want a representative of our government there.

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2009-04-12 11:50:01

There are few things that I have less tolerence for than hypocricy.

Then you must really be be at odds with yourself, since you goose-step so well with the rest of the “change” crowd.

Your posts are too mind-numbingly stupid to be real. You’re a comedian, right?

Comment by Docelder | 2009-04-12 12:01:42

I see the pattern clearly now. Whoever stands in the face of “change”… they are to be discredited. Even if that somebody is the Vatican? Wow, that is one tall order. And we thought Gibbs had it bad trying to convince the world itself that they had “lying eyes”.

Comment by Tuppence411 | 2009-04-12 13:29:47

Just like you, Sebellious(sp), Pelosi, Gulliani, Biden, Daschle, Kennedy et al are free to leave and chose a denomination that more suits their belief structure. No one is forcing them to remain Catholic.

The examination of one’s conscience before receiving Communion is a very personal exercise. No one knows what’s in your heart or the status of your soul but you. ( Though I am sure the group listed above throws the Bishops and some fellow parishioners for a loop.)The problem lies in how they publically use their Catholism: to garner political advantages, to sway Catholic public opinion, to even upsurp teaching of the faith. My favorite was a PA Bishop’s response to campaign material produced by “Catholics for Obama”. There is one teacher of the Catholic faith in this diocese- ME.

Comment by JozefAL | 2009-04-12 14:17:09

Tuppence, disagree with James all you want, but this very attitude that the Catholic Church (with its former Hitler Youth gang-member of a Pope, and his predecessor, John “It’s okay to be politically active, as long as it’s the *right* kind of politics” Paul II approve) is what made things so difficult for Roman Catholics to even attempt a campaign for the Presidency in the first place. (Even though Catholics have been a part of this country since colonial days, it wasn’t until 1928 that the first Roman Catholic made an active attempt at running for President (there had been a Catholic–Charles O’Conor–who was nominated by a Democratic faction in 1872, but he declined the nomination; he still received some votes, however).
Kennedy actually had to (pardon the expression) appease Protestant bigots who were certain that he would be taking his orders from the Vatican if he became President. Now, more than 40 years after (the ONLY) Roman Catholic President was elected, the Vatican is showing that the only way you can be a “Catholic” politician IS to “take orders from the Vatican”. Good luck to the next RC who wants to be President.
Cripes. It’s funny how the same people who are so incensed over Obama’s “Muslim heritage” seem to have no problem with the Vatican and the Catholic hierarchy dictating how American Catholics MUST act.

Comment by elise | 2009-04-12 19:42:26

Why I wonder, are some in the Catholic Church trying to embarrass Obama? I don’t for one minute believe it is just a difference in stated public policy re stem cells and abortion. Notre Dame, for example, invited Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter who are both pro-choice. Now, not only are a large group of students opposing his upcoming commencement address, various prominent Bishops are also protesting. It’s a test of wills between one of the most conservative popes ever and the most liberal US president ever or it could be there is much more going on we know nothing about.

Comment by Lyn | 2009-04-12 22:47:16

When did Clinton speak? When I was looking at their site I read where people were protesting Bush and the article said “Malloy’s assertion that Notre Dame was honoring the office and not presidential policies, was disingenuous. Bill Clinton during his eight year presidency was never honored, for the simple reason that his pro-choice approach offended the Church’s official teaching on abortion”

I doubt seriously that the leaders of the Catholic Church are willing to be lectured and changed by a back-slidden Catholic. Recognizing the hypocracy and unforgiveable abuse by priests, does not change the church’s fundamental doctrine: “Life begins at Conception”.

Liberal democrats who are elected officials and pro-choice need to recognize that fundamental fact and leave the church rather than expecting the Catholic Church to bend to support their politics. How ridiculous!

First, you have to be qualified as a POTUS to know that the Pope has a position on the issue of life. What a joke. Obama just cheapens the US Presidency.

Comment by wodiej | 2009-04-12 10:00:54

I’m glad too know someone has the integrity to stand up to this gutless wonder, Obama. The Kennedy name is highly overrated.

Regarding the Catholic church. Notre Dame University president has caused much turmoil by not only inviting a pro abortion and pro embryonic stem cell research president to speak at their graduation but also offering him an honorary degree. Thousands are protesting including prominent Bishops and donors are threatening to pull financial support as well. president of ND refuses to budge. Of course the dignified thing would be for BO to withdraw from the engagement.

Comment by bart | 2009-04-12 10:26:56

This is very interesting. BO is getting serious push back from Catholics across the board. And even the Kennedy name and Catholic associations are not enough to help BO out.

I’m thinking neither Ted nor Caroline got a good return on their political investment. At least not yet.

Comment by TeakwoodKite | 2009-04-12 12:22:38

I dought Ted could get the Obama navy to send the Navy salvage vessel USS Grasp to recover his foriegn policy.

If they ever name a ship after him it will be called the “USS Clueless.”

There is a line in Evita. I don’t remember the exact quote, but when she was asked by the press about all the money she spent as first lady of Argentina, Eva Peron replied, “The people expect it of me. Fun to see what a huge miss calculation the Kennedy’s made when they thought THEY could “pass the torch”, even that the torch was theirs to pass.

Fun to see them going down. They should have just kept their heads down, but Teddy had to try to take control of history. Eight good years of Bill Clinton followed by eight good years of Hillary, the Kennedy myth would be over. And Hillary and Bill would be acknowledged at two of our greatest presidents, and Hillary would have given us honest health care reform.

But no, Teddy just couldn’t cope with that – I am still waiting for his legacy health care plan. It sure as hell better be worth screwing America out of a great president.

That is a fact.

Bill Clinton lost his opportunity for greatness and if you can’t see that, you ought not to be allowed to drive. You ca’t possibly be safe.
When Bill Clinton failed to keep his pants zipped, he paid for that with two history changing events. 1. His entire second administration was effectively short circuited. 2. shrub Bush became the President of the United States. The second cost will have implications for the United States and the world for decades.
Hillary wasn’t elected. Barack Obama is our President. To his and her credit, she is our Secretary of State.

I can see that whenever I visit NOQ now, it’s important to just skip James’ very predictable Obama justifications and hackneyed “we won, you lost, get over it” nonsense.

B-bye James. Someday, maybe you will actually see the stark contrast between what O promises and what he actually does.

Comment by I'mFedUp | 2009-04-12 12:03:42

James, well actually he’s NOT legally our President.

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2009-04-12 12:28:57

2. shrub Bush became the President of the United States.

You are still a blockhead, Jimmy. Donkey Brassiere lost the election to Shrub by having Al Gore run away from Clinton. She is the reason Shrub was president and also the reason Shrub II is president. She’s a master at fubar politics. So how does it feel to be to be both a Brazilebot and an Obamabot at the same time, chuckles?

Comment by Ani | 2009-04-12 14:19:01

It is true that’s why Gore lost — if he had allowed Clinton (still at 67% popularity at the end of eight years) to campaign for him and if he had allowed himself to run on their great record together — he would have been our president. Gore was a snob and foolish. Brazile did not help him.

Comment by jenn | 2009-04-12 12:33:25

Actually no. Those nutcases who voted for Nadar in Florida in 2000 gave the POTUS to shrub. Clinton was extremely popular when he left office and Gore could very well have strategically used Clinton to his advantage–but alas, he had Donna B giving him advice.

So it wasn’t entirely Bill unzipping his pants–it was Nadar and Donna B that should be held accountable by the left for shrub’s election.

Comment by TeakwoodKite | 2009-04-12 13:20:55

Bill Clinton lost his opportunity for greatness

Is this what you believe to be the goal of POTUS?

Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound like “the ONE”?

Your comment smells like the residue of “any one but Hillary”.

@ImFedUp, it matters not to those stuck in the “anyones better than Bush…but not Hillary” mindset.

Comment by I'mFedUp | 2009-04-12 13:28:33

“Hillary wasn’t elected?” James you buffoon…yes she was. But Donkey Brassiere, Pig Pelosi and all of the other thieves, thugs and criminals in the DNC stole her nomination. Try denying that you Obot freak.

According to Gug, now we’ve lost the privilege of driving…along with the right to live in the country because we won’t agree with his premise that O won the primary legitimately…or that Bill Clinton’s pants gave the next election to W. Earth to Gug…there was no one in the Dimocrat party strong enough to stand up to even a little weasel like W.

You’re giving and taking away of privileges and rights is getting a bit boring. You’re not the boss of us…in case you are under that delusion as well.

He is one arrogant sob isn’t he? I think it’s from all those years working as a “by any means” activist. He thinks he can ram down his “change” at will. Somebody might tell him as a head of state and leader of the free world he has some responsibility that transcends his personal beliefs and agenda. But, he wouldn’t listen anyway. He has never had to live by other peoples rules. Good lord, he really is like a spoiled NFL or NBA athlete. He probably has a sharpie in his sock.

I have talked to some friends in other countries. They already have a president, PM or other national leader. They want us to quit calling Zero the “leader of the free world.” He is not their leader.. and they don’t want him acting that way.

So, Zero. Don’t unconditionally send an ambassador. Do some background and homework first. You ain’t their boss, bro.

Comment by Docelder | 2009-04-12 12:07:01

Ironic isn’t it… that the very talking down to the world by BHO of the U.S. and by telling the very world we are no longer the “power”… that very act lessens and cheapens his own power. Funny, that he never could see that and probably still doesn’t. It is your country too BHO… at least it ought to be seeing that you are the leader of it.

The Pope is wisely using the situation to highlight 0bama’s extreme position on abortion. You can be certain that the Pope has been informed about 0bama’s votes on the subject while he was a state senator. While many pre-election attempts were made to expose 0bama’s incedibly cruel votes regarding babies that survived abortions, many of his supporters ignored those votes, or worse, applauded them. This may simply be the Pope’s way of holding 0bama, and unfortunately our country, accountable.

You know what this post reminds me of? That Obama is still playing president.

All his partying and spending extravaganza-including the frequency of partying and the 100.00 steaks.

But also, his lack of filling even the most important jobs, like THE TREASURY…how many he still needs to appoint?…3 dozen? His poor performance on his built up FIRST OVERSEAS ROAD TRIP, bow wow wow in Weary Barry’s How To Bow or not to bow film short. And his pitiful response in this Piracy and hostage taking. Reinforced with the couple trying to make a big deal by signing on to an exclusive deal with WaPo to report on their finally arriving doggie…from of course, Ted Kennedy.

They really are treating this like a Reality Show.

Comment by Lyn | 2009-04-12 23:16:58

and I LOVE that the dog “news” was all over the internet DAYS before the exclusive.

So what Obama supporter bought the puppy the chose (because he has the same bloodlines ae Kennedy’s)and returned it so Barky could “save” the (purebred) dog?

AnD WHY did it have to be a gift from the Kennedy family, even tho it really was from the pound? They made Millions from the book Barky “wrote” they couldn’t buy ther own dog? Or did the money they put aside for the dog have to go to MEEEchell having to have FT make-up artist, because apperntly she got to the age of 50 without knowing how to make her self look good (hint a SMILE helps alot, well a REAL smile that reaches your eyes, not those fake ones with your eyes showing contempt)
Altho thinking of the pic of her sitting as the table for the going away dinner for Khalidi in 2003,(which looked ALOT differnt than the MO of 2007)I understand why she needs help.

Well this is just tangential, but I wonder now since the Vatican has clearly laid the law down quite clearly… How does this affect the Notre Dame speech? It would apear that the protesters have been right all along. BHO may think he’s a constitutional arbiter, but for the Vatican in all matters of faith… their opinion really is absolute to their church.

Comment by Tuppence411 | 2009-04-12 17:43:24

My bet is that Notre Dame and the US Conference of Bishops are heading for a showdown….what will hang in the balance is Notre Dame’s ability to call themselves an offically recognized and sanctioned “Catholic” University, with all the perks that come with it. (There is an actually book!) The University administration is at a cross-road. THEY need to decide if they are a secular insititution or a religious one.

Report: Hagel and Podesta have both turned down Beijing posting

Foreign Policy reports that both former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel — a Republican who sat out the presidential race — and Obama transition chief and former WJC CoS John Podesta have turned down offers to become Ambassador to China.

One name apparently still in the mix: former Rep. Jim Leach, the sweater-loving former Iowa GOP congressman and foreign service officer who did back Obama last year and is now a visiting prof at Princeton, his alma mater.

Maybe THIS is the perfect post for Caroline. After all, she said she is NOW looking to make that leap in to politics since 9/11/2 0 0 1, (?), but doesn’t seem to want to run for anything, BUT, we know how important China is, and how important they will be in the future, so she will have more important resume building position here.

This voting was VERY SEXIST! I won’t have it!

And remember that Donna said that, while she watched Obama sworn in, it inspired her to want a woman to be president????

She is going to be FURIOUS she lost this final SOLELY due to the arbitrary sexist voting here, and she is going to be all the more determined now to get a woman to run! Maybe she’ll get Michelle to run!

Actually it has everything to do with abortion and his stand on stem cells. You must have been listening to Nancy Pelosi when she said that the church has a relaxed veiw on abortion. Guess what the B@#$% lied. The Kennedys are Cafeteria Catholic, the only thing thing they are Pro-life about is the death penalty. So that makes her unfit to be Ambassador to the Vatican.

Comment by Alex M | 2009-04-15 14:28:54

Julia, I can see that you have no idea what-so-ever what the Catholic Church is all about. I am not Catholic but I do know that abortions and same sex marriages are not tollerated by the church. For once someone has the courage to stand up to Obama. The Pope has every right to back the Vatican laws. If anyone is insulting someone here is Obama because he very well know where Carolyn Kennedy stands on the abortion issue. But being a pro-abortionist militant himself he insulted the Pope and the entire Catholic Church by listening to another pro-abortion activist (Kerry) and appointing her.
“Way to go Pope”

I GOT IT….Bill Richardson is still REALLY looking at getting another gig. Where as before he was very unhappy with the position of Ambassador to China, I bet now an Ambassadorship looks pretty darn good.

We hear he is on his merry way to Italia to visit the Pope because he has good tidings to share with his passage of the repeal of the Death Penalty in our state. (shh, the Pope doesn’t have to know he was thinking about vetoing it, it serves his needs now and that is ALL Billy Boy EVER cares about)

So, Gov Richardson is still playing his hand as best as it’s laid out and right now the cards say Viva Iatlia!

…come on Barry, ask how his investigation on his perpetual play for pay is going and give him the gig. Many NMicans wud be thrilled. They’ve been in a total state of depression since he was passed over on the last possible new job outside the state…and then there’s that entire backtrackin’ Barry they are all choking on.

Comment by jyotinc | 2009-04-12 16:29:50

Comment by Alex M | 2009-04-15 14:01:50

Three cheers for the Pope. Finally someone not afraid of standing up for the belives of the Catholic Church and not bending to public opinion.
Kerry (a Catholic)knew very well that Carolyn Kennedy is 100% pro-abortion. He should have never suggested that she be named Ambassador to the Vatican. Obama knows of her stance on the abortion issue as well and is fully aware of the Catholic Church’s view on abortion. So why did he go ahead with the appointment? It was a slap in the face of the Catholic Church and an insult to the Pope. I think that Obama should openly and in person apologize to the Pope for his arrogance.
