“Tea-baggers.” Boy, that’s a fucking hoot! What better way to disparage those protesting rising taxes and out-of-control government spending then by labeling them as “tea-baggers.”
Tea-bagging, for those of you unschooled in the ways of urban slang, is the term for a man squatting naked over someone’s face and lowering his testicles into the mouth of his partner.
While “tea-bagging” can be a heterosexual activity, it is normally associated with what men do to each other in prison and also is associated with gay men. So my question is this–why are people who think the federal government’s financial house is out of order being labeled as folks eager to suck on a man’s balls? I think it is particularly unseemly that Rachel Maddow should promote a message like this, which is normally used as a smear against gay men.

There is no post hoc fallacy in my post. I referenced the high correlation between pre-election polls and the outcome on November 4. Nor did I appeal to false authority: I referred generally to national pre-election polls, most of which performed a sound job of predicting the outcome.
Look, I recognize that you take comfort in ad hominem attacks against anyone who introduces dissonance into this echo chamber, but I’d suggest you seek sounder footing for your criticisms. Polls are statistically based barometers of public opinion. Their data are, in fact, “fact,” in the sense that they state facts about the subjects polled. They are of course not proof of public opinion, but the higher the n the smaller the margin of error, and few national polls exceed an MOE of +/- 3%.

Conservatives opposed to President Obama’s policies began using the term “tea-bagging,” completely unaware of the sexual connotations. (In a related recent incident, there’s another conservative group using the acronym “2M4M” to stand for “Two million for marriage.” They are also unaware that “2M4M” is a fairly common abbreviation in gay parlance meaning that two men are looking for other men to have some fun.)
Anyway, a quick search of The Google will confirm large numbers of conservative references to tea-bagging in this uninformed context. These references were highly amusing to many on the Left and in the media, who were aware of the term. Many of us, myself included, first heard it used in Sex and the City, where the reference isn’t tied to gay men but is rather explained as a not uncommon concomitant of oral sex.
Are the media and various liberals being a bit immature in their glee over the unhip obliviousness of the conservatives involved? Absolutely. I find it equally ironic and funny that many of the posters here begin their posts by decrying the ostensible gay-bashing of the Left before making homophobic comments.

I’m socially liberal and have gay and lesbian friends and I had never heard the term “tea bagging” and didn’t know what it meant until I saw the definition here on nq. To quote one of your fellow bots, “Condescension is the refuge of limited intelligence”. You both seem to be missing the importance of American’s right to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech. I emphasized peaceful since I haven’t heard of a single instance of fighting or violence today at the protests. Of course, CNN and MSNBC have the right to belittle and minimize the protests since they have been bought and paid for, but they have made some poor choices in the last two years and their ratings have suffered significantly. If the economy improves, they won’t have lost anything, but not many people believe that will happen anytime soon. If there are more layoffs, failed banks, large companies in bankruptcy and foreclosures, there will be more and larger tea parties. Will they continue to paint them as right wing extremists or admit Democrats and Indies are also participating because they are afraid of the spending and bailouts? And no one in their right mind wants this administration to fail because we all pay, but it is a right guaranteed by the Constitution to protest the policies of the government. I have exercised my rights many times beginning with Vietnam and it’s always exciting.

I’m looking at the Obama budget as a necessary evil, resulting from the dire state of the economy and a recognition of what would likely happen if we chose this moment to drastically curtail federal spending.

Well, if yesterdays County Commissioners meeting I attended where a woman got up to speak to exclaim she hopes they will be reviewing property taxes more often now that they have just hired 5 Assessors so we can pay more higher taxes the way we should, because there is too much disparity on low income and wealthy in this area was any indication of the New Democrats and Republicans are the ones opposing wasteful spending and high taxes, say good bye Democrats after this spend and expand government has their run.
JUST CAME BACK FROM OUR Tea Party….which included ALL, Democrats, Republicans, Indes, Libertarians, and I think 2 or 3 obots. We even had a former Democratic state Senator speak.
I know some may have a hard time believing this, but this was one of the best well attended rallies I’ve seen. Hundred in our Plaza in small Santa Fe.

Actually, what I’ve noticed is that any opinions expressed here that aren’t sufficiently anti-Obama immediately render one a target for personal abuse, vile language, mindless ridicule, and groundless accusations. So you finally got the “joke” You forgot to mention the clip of some Fox yahoo in a tricornered hat specifically telling the viewers to “teabag Washington” Fox News and others fell into this bit of silliness all by their lonesome without any help from Obama.
