Obama Team Gay Bashing?

“Tea-baggers.” Boy, that’s a fucking hoot! What better way to disparage those protesting rising taxes and out-of-control government spending then by labeling them as “tea-baggers.”

Tea-bagging, for those of you unschooled in the ways of urban slang, is the term for a man squatting naked over someone’s face and lowering his testicles into the mouth of his partner.

While “tea-bagging” can be a heterosexual activity, it is normally associated with what men do to each other in prison and also is associated with gay men. So my question is this–why are people who think the federal government’s financial house is out of order being labeled as folks eager to suck on a man’s balls? I think it is particularly unseemly that Rachel Maddow should promote a message like this, which is normally used as a smear against gay men.

Finally, these are called “tea parties” not “tea-bagger” parties.

Thanks for clearing this up. I am, by most accounts, now a senior citizen. I don’t know how I got this far while being still very clueless. I had not idea what the tea-bagging jokes were about.

Now I am blushing.

I didn’t know what the joke was either, but was afraid to ask. Glad I waited for the explanation to avoid the embarrassment. I’m blushing now, too.

Blushing, too! Had no idea what the term meant and I’m really surprised they would use such lingo. Wonder what Larry SInclair thinks about this.

Rachel’s so-called Rhodes Scholar honor has just been diminished by her discussion with AnnaMarie Cox about teabagging, while giggling at each other’s so-called “wit” the whole time.

Disgusting. I’ll never watch Rachel again, based on what she has become.

Besides, there was a time when Rachel publicly ADMIRED people like Ron Paul and his supporters.

She sold out. Tawdry, now.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2009-04-17 02:15:50

Which explains why MSNBC is at the bottom of the viewer ratings heap. Perhaps they are shooting for the slot just after the Civil Defense Alert channel. Basically, FOX lowered theirs into MSNBC’s mouth long ago. They will never recover so it’s kind of like the guy who has nothing to lose waving his arms and jumping up and down and screaming, looking for a way out.

But to entertain their metaphor further, if we tea-party protesters are the “tea-baggers” then those being protested against (Obama, etc.) would be the “tea-baggees.” In which case, this scenario would put us in the superior position. I’m just saying ….

Ever since Obama got into the race, this country has lost its manners, dignity, class, intelligence and compassion. I have never seen more cruelty than from the loony left with the threats, intimidation, thuggery, verbal assaults, sexism, racism, lies, cheating, you name it. I don’t even recognize my country. Obama has spread this pervasive stench of cruelty all over America. You can smell it. Neighbors hating neighbors, family rifts, broken and destroyed friendships, etc. It’s foul and vile. The Palin bashing, the women who accused her of not giving birth to her baby, the Hillary and Bill bashing, the absolutely DESPICABLE comments that come from shitstains like Olbermann, Matthews, ManCow, etc. It goes on and on and on. We’ve become a nation of hatred. Very sad. These jizzbrains can’t get out of Congress and the White House soon enough. I’ve never seen America so full of filth.

Comment by Kathy | 2009-04-15 17:07:05

You are dead on. Even though I have been a lifelong Democrat one of the main reasons I could never bring myself to vote for Obama was because of the vileness of his supporters. Who wants to be in that company? Obama only encouraged it with his smirky shoulder brushing and loud silence when anything vile was said abut one of his opponents. He has always reminded me of a junior high bully who throws mud and then hides behind a bush while others deal with the mess.

Comment by I'mFedUp | 2009-04-15 22:03:23

Actually he BECAME a certified plumber BECAUSE after the loony left tried to destroy him, Americans did what Americans DO. We raised $1800 for him to pay his taxes, get his plumbers license, etc. So the dirtbag activities of the loony left backfired.

Comment by Baba Rum Raisin | 2009-04-16 09:08:50

We know that a Plumber has command of three basic facts, immutable and constant:

1. Wednesday is Pay Day;
2. DON’T BITE YOUR FINGERNAILS;
3. Shit doesn’t run uphill.

Comment by deminva | 2009-04-16 11:59:33

Joe’s whole shtick was that he was a “regular working guy” — a plumber — who worried that then-Senator Obama’s tax proposals would hurt him. Then it came out that he a) wasn’t a plumber, b) didn’t earn anything close to $250K, and c)was a plant for the McCain campaign. Joe was a failed attempt to appeal to Reagan Democrats.

He remains an uninformed tool of the Right, most recently railing against legislation affecting unions which he finally admitted, angrily, that he hadn’t read.

The ostensibly damning Youtube of then-Senator Obama talking about Joe the Plumber shows Obama dismissively talking about a “plumber” (i.e., McCain’s faux plumber), not about plumbers in general. He isn’t mocking Joe for being a plumber. He’s mocking both Joe and McCain for their sorry charade.

Sorry to disagree, but our descent into cultural crassness and vulgarity preceded Obama by decades. I’m old enough to remember when this sort of thing was not the norm, and old enough to remember when our standards began slipping. I blame the feedback loop of the media, always pushing the envelope and invariably pushing it downward.

Comment by elise | 2009-04-16 05:38:33

The media is responsible, in large part, for the lower standards, but since the same media is also responsible (in large part) for Obama’s election, it’s intellectually dishonest not to admit the symbiotic relationship, ziggy. Gratuitous insults and vulgarity are the new “cool’.

You are too stupid to be believed. Your post only demonstrates that your ability is most suspect in the realm of logic. You committed at least three logical fallacies, including the unknown fact; the post hoc ergo propter hoc, and the appeal to false authority. But enough of this. It’s your bedtime, Timmy.

Comment by deminva | 2009-04-15 23:10:54

There is no post hoc fallacy in my post. I referenced the high correlation between pre-election polls and the outcome on November 4. Nor did I appeal to false authority: I referred generally to national pre-election polls, most of which performed a sound job of predicting the outcome.

Look, I recognize that you take comfort in ad hominem attacks against anyone who introduces dissonance into this echo chamber, but I’d suggest you seek sounder footing for your criticisms. Polls are statistically based barometers of public opinion. Their data are, in fact, “fact,” in the sense that they state facts about the subjects polled. They are of course not proof of public opinion, but the higher the n the smaller the margin of error, and few national polls exceed an MOE of +/- 3%.

Comment by skinny malinky | 2009-04-15 19:01:36

From Ronald Brownstein:

3. Since it’s unrealistic that Obama can maintain strong approval ratings in a Republican Party so dominated by conservatives, a more telling measure of the President’s reach is his position among independents. And there his support remains robust: in the Pew survey 56% of independents approved of his performance. In the Gallup average released today for the week ending April 12, his approval among independents stood at 60%.

From Gallup:

Still enjoying a honeymoon period, Obama’s approval rating has fallen only slightly from its 67% starting point even as he has outlined an ambitious agenda that has been controversial to some with regard to the costs to taxpayers and the proposed expansion of the federal government’s role in the economy.

So far, Obama’s actions have served to turn off only a rather limited number of Republicans. He began his term with a 41% approval rating among Republicans — not outstanding but certainly healthy when juxtaposed against the largely single-digit approval ratings for George W. Bush among Democrats in the last year and a half of his presidency.

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2009-04-15 19:18:38

Victor Davis Hanson is a must-read today for people like us President of the World

Given Obama’s performance on his recent trip, three developments were quite astounding.

First, despite this fresh climate of atonement, there was a complete absence of a single apology from any other foreign leader — odd for the new shared spirit of multi-polarity and reciprocity.

….

Instead I think a number of astute foreign leaders — rivals, enemies, and friends alike — have already drawn the following conclusions.

I. An Obama visit
A vast entourage will descend on your capital in campaign mode. Most of your functionaries will wish to get a photo-op with the rock-star president. The American president at some point will request a “town-hall meeting,” press conference, or open-air handshake session with the crowd. All this is largely for domestic consumption back home, and is designed to offer an antidote for the concessions or apologies that follow. It is quite successful in generating temporary goodwill toward the new Obama administration.

He goes on for six more conclusions, three pages, VDH on fire.

FedUP: I don’t like Obama, but in truth Karl Rove and George W. Bush started the incivility and hate-speak. Hell, the Republicans started the hate-speak when Clinton ran for office. Bush set this country on the dastardly, corrupt course that Obama is continuing.

Right. And it’s those rude liberals who are to blame for the increase in white supremacist hate groups. The blame goes directly to President Obama: If he hadn’t run for president, he wouldn’t have riled up all of these God-fearing white people.

I think of that good white man who felt compelled to bring a Curious George doll to a McCain rally. Or of Governor Palin herself, who accused then-Senator Obama of “palling around with terrorists” and declared that her supporters were from “the real America.” It saddens me that she was forced to make such statements.

And now, some conservatives started what they themselves termed “teabagging,” and they’ve been labelled “teabaggers” by those rude, hate-filled liberals — all because the conservatives didn’t know what the term “teabagging” already connoted.

It’s all very sad.

I for one have tremendous sympathy for the hundreds of protesters who despise the fact that their tax bills in 2008 are utterly unaffected by President Obama’s policies, and — worse still — that their 2009 tax liability will almost certainly decrease unless they earn more than a quarter of million dollars. I mean, how long are we really going to stand for this taxation with representation. It’s almost as if elections have consequences.

Thank you Larry, for pointing out that the protests are called “tea parties” and not “tea-bagger” parties. The left’s reaction to these parties is exactly why I no longer consider myself a “leftie.” This laughing and using a gay smear at the protesters by the left is exactly the same type of treatment they gave Hillary during the primary. This treatment is not stopping the protests, it is in fact only making the tea party protesters dig in their heels more.

The left is trying to say that the tea party people are protesting current taxes only-and that they haven’t been raised yet, so what are they protesting? Well, they are protesting the taxation that is coming with all of this spending.

Rachel Maddow flat out lied the other night about the 95% tax cut. Saying we already had it, when we don’t. She was referring to the stimulus. Obama wants to cut our taxes, but it won’t last. He will have to raise them at some point. As in 2011. That is what people are protesting.

Comment by RedDragon62 | 2009-04-15 16:42:56

I have found many so-called “Democrats” all too quick with the gay bashing. They pay lip service to that community but deep down, they have no respect for them as human-beings. They proved this when they were quick to attack Hillary and all the women who came to her defense.

Comment by deminva | 2009-04-15 20:02:34

I hate to spoil everyone’s fun here, but the evolution of this little teabagging spree is this:

Conservatives opposed to President Obama’s policies began using the term “tea-bagging,” completely unaware of the sexual connotations. (In a related recent incident, there’s another conservative group using the acronym “2M4M” to stand for “Two million for marriage.” They are also unaware that “2M4M” is a fairly common abbreviation in gay parlance meaning that two men are looking for other men to have some fun.)

Anyway, a quick search of The Google will confirm large numbers of conservative references to tea-bagging in this uninformed context. These references were highly amusing to many on the Left and in the media, who were aware of the term. Many of us, myself included, first heard it used in Sex and the City, where the reference isn’t tied to gay men but is rather explained as a not uncommon concomitant of oral sex.

Are the media and various liberals being a bit immature in their glee over the unhip obliviousness of the conservatives involved? Absolutely. I find it equally ironic and funny that many of the posters here begin their posts by decrying the ostensible gay-bashing of the Left before making homophobic comments.

Comment by Karma | 2009-04-15 20:30:09

And how exactly do all these liberals know that ‘teabagging’ is a foreign concept to conservatives?

Really? How exactly do they know?

Because all the jokes I’ve heard from liberals is about how the republicans are filled with closeted gays. And I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t know what that means.

But NOW the joke is the Reps don’t know about gay culture. When it was a Republican that tipped most of the country to the toe tapping bathroom code.

So what is it? They know or they don’t?

At this point, the biggest homophobes in the room seem to be the Democrats and liberals, because they never miss a chance at a smearing republicans with gay jokes. On the news no less!

And let’s be honest here. Giggling like idiots because the science teacher said ‘Uranus’ doesn’t reflect poorly on the science teacher. ;)

Demi, I was still watching MSNBC and CNN when Larry Craig was arrested and I remember all the jokes at his expense from Olbermann and Mathews. I was still watching those channels when they ignored the truth about John Edwards. I felt pity for Craig. He is a man still struggling with his sexual identity. I feel contempt for John Edwards. His choices were known before his endorsement of Obama, MSNBC and CNN covered for him. I felt pity for Elizabeth Edwards until I found out she knew the truth and condemned Hillary for keeping her marriage together. I was still a Democrat then. I never watched Sex and the City. I don’t care much for the edgy, airhead shows and don’t spend much time in front of a TV. I’m socially liberal and have gay and lesbian friends and I had never heard the term “tea bagging” and didn’t know what it meant until I saw the definition here on nq. To quote one of your fellow bots, “Condescension is the refuge of limited intelligence”. You both seem to be missing the importance of American’s right to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech. I emphasized peaceful since I haven’t heard of a single instance of fighting or violence today at the protests. Of course, CNN and MSNBC have the right to belittle and minimize the protests since they have been bought and paid for, but they have made some poor choices in the last two years and their ratings have suffered significantly. If the economy improves, they won’t have lost anything, but not many people believe that will happen anytime soon. If there are more layoffs, failed banks, large companies in bankruptcy and foreclosures, there will be more and larger tea parties. Will they continue to paint them as right wing extremists or admit Democrats and Indies are also participating because they are afraid of the spending and bailouts? And no one in their right mind wants this administration to fail because we all pay, but it is a right guaranteed by the Constitution to protest the policies of the government. I have exercised my rights many times beginning with Vietnam and it’s always exciting.

Comment by Mary | 2009-04-16 07:52:34

Well said.

Most of the signs I saw the participants carry were commenting that the Democratically-controlled Congress didn’t even READ the stimulus bill before they voted for it. They had no idea how much crap and pork was in it.

That’s a very legitimate complaint from ANY American taxpayer.

Rachel and Keith and AnnaMarie worked very hard to distract Americans from that legitimate point.

And they did it very childishly.

If you think David Axelrod and Mr. Gibbs had nothing to do with that backroom condescension and snotty diminishing of valid points, then you were asleep during the primaries.

It’s how the Obama campaign OPERATED.

The obama backed media used it to degrade the people holding tea parties. Why else would they use it? Ed Shultz got his tv show b/c he is a shill for the Obama propaganda machine.

Most of us, including me, pay to avoid probs with the IRS.

But several years ago the IRS made a mistake and had to pay me back with interest.

But I thought the govt was bad and too all-powerful? Now Obama’s in? He can support FISA, NAFTA, CAFTA, and blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants. Obama can expand the powers GWB gave himself through executive order without a complaint.

He can send more troops overseas and say he’s leaving troops in Iraq without a peep from the anti-war movement.

Obama can spend trillions in taxpayer monies without one protest from so-called progressives/liberals. The same folks that sent out petitions when GWB did it a few months ago. Oh, but that was suddenly okay too cuz Obama agreed with Bush.

And it’s only going to get much worse as the depression deepens & the inevitable - hyperinflation - kicks in as a result of the Obama administration’s printing & spending of TRILLIONS of dollars that we don’t have.

And if people don’t pay taxes now, they will have to later; the law is the law and just because you don’t like who’s in charge doesn’t mean you get to not pay taxes.

Absolute bull.

Tell that to our founding fathers - who rebelled against the British empire because of unfair taxation. Or do you need an American history lesson?

Laws are changed every year, it’s called legislation, laws are interpreted everyday, that’s what Judges do; and you probably would love to believe people will only forget about this after today and go home. They will continue on; because it isn’t an election year, there was no other reason to come out that to raise their voices against their government; the truest most upheld law in our country.

If you want to discuss back taxes, and garnishment, we can always talk about moose and squirrels cabinet.

Comment by Obama: Dubya II Electric Boogaloo | 2009-04-15 17:44:35

Tax protesters threw what appeared to be a box of tea bags toward the White House on Wednesday, prompting officials to lockdown the compound. The Secret Service also used a robot to inspect the package thrown in an apparent act of defiance meant to echo the rebellion of the Boston Tea Party.

Maybe someone should roll and throw over a few tea-filled cigarettes to Obama to see if he’ll smoke them. That would certainly be a more thoughtful gift than his cheap CD box set to Heads of State.

don’t you know, gay-bashing is acceptable, even cool, when “progressives” do it? as is racism, sexism, christian-bashing, ageism, lying, cheating, stealing, etc., you name it. the gay bashing is really just another version of sexism, and we know where women rank with Obots.

i hope that all those gays (particularly gay men) who voted for Zero are laughing right along with those who are laughing *at* them.

Comment by candymarl | 2009-04-15 18:06:03

The LGBT community didn’t care when Obama appeared with McClurkin. They made excuses.

The LGBT community didn’t care when the anti-gay preacher gave the invocation. They made excuses.

The LGBT community didn’t even care that it was mostly Obama supporters that voted for the ban on gay marriage in California.

So now homophobe jokes, as long as they’re from the left, are funny to other gays including Rachel Maddow.

Had someone from the right made the same joke all of the so-called liberal/progressive blogs would have been up in arms. Now? Silence.

That is beyond sad.

Comment by MrX | 2009-04-15 18:07:32

Comment by ziggy | 2009-04-15 18:26:40

Yes, Ferd. But those dollars will be worth so much less than the Bush debt, owing to the resultant inflation. We have to gauge the degree of the sin after adjusting for inflation.

(Which is my grudging acknowledgement that you have a good point.)

Comment by ziggy | 2009-04-15 19:05:20

I sincerely hope you will remember that, when the republicans get back in office.

I do find myself wondering where this degree of conservative outrage was during any of the past 3 republican administrations, but I don’t use that out as justification for the current budget.

I’m looking at the Obama budget as a necessary evil, resulting from the dire state of the economy and a recognition of what would likely happen if we chose this moment to drastically curtail federal spending.

There were earlier times when that might have been done while the economy was strong. No one who talked the fiscal responsibility talk took advantage of what has now become a lost opportunity.

Maybe, if the economy turns around, the chance will come again. No one has convinced me that now is such a moment, however. I’m not hearing many good arguments as to why this would be.

Comment by I'mFedUp | 2009-04-15 19:15:16

Well, if yesterdays County Commissioners meeting I attended where a woman got up to speak to exclaim she hopes they will be reviewing property taxes more often now that they have just hired 5 Assessors so we can pay more higher taxes the way we should, because there is too much disparity on low income and wealthy in this area was any indication of the New Democrats and Republicans are the ones opposing wasteful spending and high taxes, say good bye Democrats after this spend and expand government has their run.

JUST CAME BACK FROM OUR Tea Party….which included ALL, Democrats, Republicans, Indes, Libertarians, and I think 2 or 3 obots. We even had a former Democratic state Senator speak.

Where does a nasty little piece of toe jam like you get the right to ridicule hard working people who love their country? I feel this is another example of classic O-camp passive-aggressiveness. I agree with Carlaforhillary - same tactics used against HRC in primaries.

Obama does not acknowledge the tea parties it but passes the dirty work to the press minions, who fuel the hate with this snarky disdain. But it’s really hard to take it seriously since it is so frikkin jr-high level digs, again!

Larry,

So you finally got the “joke” You forgot to mention the clip of some Fox yahoo in a tricornered hat specifically telling the viewers to “teabag Washington” Fox News and others fell into this bit of silliness all by their lonesome without any help from Obama.

Of course Rachel and the rest of MSNBC made hay of this, it was easy pickens and appealed to the younger Demo. Remember it is all about the Benjamins baby. They got to go for days on end talking about teabagging, that had to have drawn in eyeballs and thus ad dollars. Capitalism at its best boys and girls.

More to the point it did speak to a larger talking point about the cluelessness and bankruptcy of the conservative movement. Your not making any progress when you fall into easy ridicule. That was the larger point of Maddow et al. Point blank the messaging sucked because it was easy pray for sexual double entandre. And judging by the foolish attempts at scatological humor by some of the commenters here it is not only Rachel that needs a lesson in manners.

Mr Army deserved the derision heap on him from Maddow et al because this was a totally unoriginal bit of Astroturf stolen from the Ron Paul Revolution. Ron Paul bless his kooky goldbug libertarian heart was the real grassroots deal.

NONSENSE, little darlin.

Before Rachel Maddow sold out as an MSNBC junior-high snarker, she publicly said she ADMIRED Ron Paul.

But you won’t find that out, unless you read information other than totally pro-Obama MSNBC ass-kissers.

Give it a rest, dumbass.

Anderson Cooper said today on CNN “it’s hard to talk when you’re teabagging”.

Dear Anderson Cooper:

I suppose that confirms what we’ve read and heard about you so we’ll just take your word for it, apparently you’re an expert.
