Joe’s off the reservation again! Pat Buchanan predicts that Joe Biden will be in the White House woodshed today. I’d pay to see that! UPDATE: Now the White House is claiming that Biden was referring solely to people who don’t feel well. Pathetic.
NBC NY: “Vice president Joe Biden said today he would tell his family members not to use subways in the U.S. and implied schools should be shuttered as the swine flu outbreak spread to 11 states and forced school closures amid confirmation of the first U.S. death.”
Congressman Joe Sestak was on Morning Joe and intimated that he thought the Veep’s words would tend to overly alarm people.
(Of course, Rep. Sestak had planned to run against Arlen Specter for the Senate seat in Pennsylvania, and Specter’s party switch puts an end to those plans. But he’ll have that opportunity soon enough, and he doesn’t strike me — ever — as the petty type. I think he has a point about Joe, per usual, saying too much.)

I am not overly alarmed, but I am sufficiently concerned about the possibility of suffering a pandemic like the one in 1918 that I would want to protect my family members. I think he’s just saying that you avoid that type of area if you can.
I know that the transportation industry is going to cry foul, but why take too many health risks if you can avoid them.
I think Joe Biden is telling the truth. The others are obfuscating to protect airline profits, pork profits, and other trade interests.

Well, that is all and good after the fact (alarming people), but he in essence said it is at Level 6 and the truth of the matter is that the government doesn’t have enough masks to start handing out yet. So, he jumped the shark, because the ‘journalist’ should have asked him, what measures was the government taking to help those people that have to take public transport and who have to go to work and to school? Also, what measures are in place for ‘essential’ personnel?

I understand where he’s coming from but lets be real. One death in America and that was a Mexican child that came to America to be treated for the flu. She brought it with her - she didn’t catch it here in America.
We have to be safe and protect ourselves but at this point, I don’t think it’s necessary to say to avoid all public transportation. Especially if you’re in an area that has no reported cases yet.

The next line after ‘JB was only referring to people who already don’t feel well…’ should have been, “…since this is the only phrase we could come up with that both exonerates JB AND makes grammatical sense.”
What he really meant to say is that the White House, doesn’t trust him out there talking to all the people on behalf of the Administration, for fear of catching some backlash.
Truly, they must think we are total idiots, in their ridiculous attemts at trying to spin this. Much as I disliked Bush, I think he’s much better and less goof prone than Biden. The cluck needs to be kept under closer control.

Oh, you’re not kidding that poor Sestak just got sold out by the “Old Boys Club”. The Democrats are EXCELLENT for doing that.
Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid begged Maj Paul Hackett from Cincinnati to run for DeWine’s seat after all Brown, Ryan and others in August decided against it. That was AFTER Major Hackett returned from Iraq and ran in the special Election for the House and came the closest a Democrat ever did in 20 years.
Little rest and he agreed to run. He hired staff, bought and RV and a poll released showed he had a good chance in winning. But any Dem was within a couple points of him…so Sherrod Brown changed his mind.
The Democrats proceeded to undercut Major Hacket. Chuckles Schumer, Dirty Harry Reid started smearing and pushing Maj Hackett to leave the race. Then Rahm got involved and covered while Sherrod Brown started releasing lies that Major Hackett “was doing things with bodies in Iraq”. They were raising money for Sherrod Brown and calling his donors telling them not to give to Hackett, but instead to give to Sherrod Brown.
They smeared, pushed Paul Hackett out, leaving him with staff and debt after going so far to have their wives call his wife to get him to run. Even Henry Waxman sent letters to Hacketts California donors to instead give to Sherrod Brown.
I’m sure Sestak knows these Democrats would pretty much knee cap him if he decided to run. Think about the deals and promises made to keep a fellow Senator in power. Too bad Arlen is so greedy to stay in power, he forgot promises made to his fellow Maine colleague that Democrats ran such lying smearing ads against.

I like good Ole Joe. I take everything Joe says with a grain of salt. You have too. It’s just who he is, his whole personality. I’ll say it again, Joe was not the problem on that ticket. He would have made a great story teller or comedian. I don’t think he should have ever been involved in politics. But, at least we know who Joe is, he’s been this way since the beginning. We also know Joe has several qualities Obama will never have. Empathy, compassion, a sense of humor. He also loves this country.

Yeah, Diana, I like him too — if only for his gaffs and blunt comments, which are all quite entertaining. But he did warn us about Obama’s first six months in office. At least with Biden, we might actually get some useful information whereas with Obama’s we’re always getting ambiguous messages and lies.
I think I am more upset about the spin than what Biden said.
I so worry that people who are not feeling well (or know that they have been exposed) may not always take responsibility for the welfare of others, especially if it is inconvenient. Taking responsiblity is not what I see as an American virtue (let alone people from other countries).
Finally, that moron with TB who was told not to fly and did from a few years ago–remember him?– is suing entity for “ruining his life.” The epitome of irresposnibility.

But, we already knew that. No one who’s known Biden over the years did not know the man was goofy. He’s like that relative you have at family get togethers that thinks he’s Carl Sagan. What I love right now is the border guards have been told “only” to wear masks if they think people are sick at the border–they don’t want to scare people. Or something.

This is craziness supreme. I know the world health people are concerned because this is a “new” virus. But it’s still the flu, not the Black Death.

White House aide’s family likely has swine flu

WASHINGTON (AP) - A member of the U.S. delegation that helped prepare Energy Secretary Steven Chu’s trip to Mexico City has demonstrated flu-like symptoms and his family members have tested probable for swine flu.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Thursday that three members of an aide’s family are being tested to see if they have the same strain of swine flu that is threatening to become a pandemic. The aide worked in presidential advance, which is responsible for planning and preparing trips.
Gibbs said that Secretary Chu has not experienced any symptoms. The spokesman also said that President Barack Obama also has had no symptoms of the virus and doctors see no need to conduct any tests on his health.
Now 3 members in a family connected to 0’s visit to Mexico have flu or flu symtoms??

The problem with jumping on Joe Biden is that what he said makes perfect sense. If you’re riding on a commercial aircraft and another passenger has influenza, you are significantly increasing your likelihood of infection.
The thing is, “sense” means different things to different people.
Airline executives are much more concerned about a costly reduction in discretionary air travel than about your personal health. They view Biden’s statement as non-sensical and irresponsible. Their primary concern about a pandemic is what it might do to their cash flow.
If you believe that that we’re in for a pandemic, and you think it’s possible that the virus in question might morph into something with a high mortality rate, you might be thinking about now that not having restricted air travel is irrational. You might be thinking that not closing our southern border may be just short of crazy.
Haven’t you noticed something a bit schizophrenic about the whole pandemic issue? On one hand, we recognize it as a potential disaster; on the other, we want to go about our business as usual, as if it’s actually nothing to worry about.
You can’t really have it both ways. Joe’s in trouble because said something that pointed that out.
Are we talking about what he said or what it is said that he said? Everything is convoluted with these guys. That is the more important point I think. Everybody screws up, admit it and go on. For some reason, this administration is incapable of that.
I’m so glad that Robert Gibbs cleared it up for us and told us what VP Biden “meant” to say. He meant to say, don’t travel if you’re ill. Huh? That was such a boneheaded response even the press corps were laughing. Geez, give it a rest. Biden misspoke, just admit to it and let’s move on. I don’t know why the Obama Administration insists on trying to convice the American public what they saw (Obama’s bow) or what they heard (Bidens comment) isn’t what they saw or heard.
