Obama’s “First 100 Days” Report Card - Abject Failure
By GOPMom on April 30, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Obama Administration, Obama's Budget, Obama's Cabinet, Obama's Priorities, President Barack Obama
From my blog, “GOPMom.”
The irony of the Prez spending his day at a Town Hall Meeting in Missouri (after a quick trip on Air Force One, of course) while the CDC has just confirmed the first death in the US of Swine Flu cannot be overlooked. Why wouldn’t his slipping poll ratings be the first thing on his mind? Why should the Prez be concerned that the first death is not even an American, but a Mexican that “travelled” here to visit family? His response to this is starting to resemble that of Paris Hilton. It’s not as if we should be surprised - he is a celebrity, after all. Besides, with the newly sworn in Kathleen Sebelius on watch, we can be assured no child will be born with H1N1.
Even the most committed Obamabot must admit that these first 100 days have been anything but the glorious ascension of The One that was predicted just six months ago. His European Victory tour was hardly that. We still have combat troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan and Pakistan is on shakier ground every day. Our Secretary of State has been sent to China to grovel for money and the Middle East to grovel for time and tolerance. Our Attorney General is jet setting around the globe begging for sanctuary for the terrorists the admin has promised to release next year - well, those we don’t want to keep ourselves. And while the stock market bounces up and down regularly, GDP numbers this AM are abysmal - something that makes our $12 trillion deficit look even more daunting. But never fear, the admin says that after the $400 “tax credit” and $250 “retirement benefit” hits home, we’ll bounce back. It should only be another six months or so before we know whether the stimulus worked or whether we need to do more.
I know the media is slobbering all over the airwaves declaring Obama’s First 100 Days some sort of miraculous transformation. And it is true that there have been some changes. I just can’t help wondering if they understood Obama meant changing the Constitution, drastically increasing powers of government, and taxing away freedom and liberty (and salaries) when he said he would “change” things. This is not what I was led to believe. I was expecting transparency, professionalism and competence, all the traits the Bush admin was supposedly lacking.
I wish I could say I was disappointed but I never believed the hype. I just don’t believe that anyone charged with the awesome responsibility of ensuring the safety, security and prosperity of the free world and beyond should be given a free pass because he’s more “hip” than the last guy, based on the pop culture standards of 22 year olds, of course. But I’ll sit through the Town Meeting - somehow - and listen to yet another campaign speech full of dire warnings and mile high promises of future action, knowing full well nothing has been delivered yet.

Abject failure is right. I can’t believe anyone is still giving this jackazz any kind of positive ratings. Ughhh….
On the way to work morning, I overheard parts of BO’s ‘press conference’ on the radio. I missed the question; obviously it had something to do with the bailout of banks. He answered, ‘Now, why would I want to take over and run the banks? I already have two wars to fight!’ Before I could stop myself, I blurted out, ‘He’s such an asshole!’ Luckily, the only other person who heard was the cab driver; and, exhibiting some knowledge of the issues, he was curious as to the basis of my outburst. So, I told him what I knew. And, based on his follow-up questions and comments, he believed everything I said.
Should be, “On the way to work this morning…”
Notice the use of ‘I’ as opposed to ‘we’ or my administration
Obama’s use of “I” is beyond irritating! His mindset is one of what’s in it for him, never the good of the country.
“I have a gift, Harry.”
Whatever gift 0bama thinks he has, it’s a booby prize for the rest of us.
I know. I think if I hear “my administration” once more, I will scream. At least Bush had the decency to say “this administration”. Oh, yes, I have surely noticed I, me, mine, and ours.
Flippancy about Iraq and Afghanistan sets just the right tone, doesn’t it?
Related or not to the ” 100 Days”, but I would like what I read, would give you all, some hope:
“Recession is when your neighbor loses his job.
Depression is when you lose yours. And,
Recovery is when Obama loses his”
Hilarious!
I’ll be hoping for a speedy recovery!
When can we look forward to Rush Limbaugh and Jim Imhofe guest posting on NQ?
sorry to disappoint you. never gonna happen.
To hear the media, Obama is very popular, Michelle is admired by all, the economy is getting better, the recession is over, and everything’s coming up roses.
I don’t watch TV anymore, but when I’m at my Mom’s house I catch glimpses of the talking heads. I don’t read the paper anymore either. I stick to the internets.
Just remember, the purpose of the media is to maintain the status quo and keep people buying stuff. When I look at the rictus grins of the peppy young anchors on TEEVEE I realize that more and more people out there don’t believe the happy news brand any longer.
Obama first 100 days? Vote him off the Island. Put him on job probation. Tell him he’d “fit in better elsewhere.” Give him detention with Professor Snape.
Put him on a work gang scrubbing graffiti off walls.
Let’s face it, if any of us had performed as poorly as Obama did in our first 100 days we would be subjected to at least one of the above consequences.
After reading today’s NYTimes post by Nicholas Kristof, “Is Rape Serious?”*, I’m wondering what the White House Council on Women and Girls is *actually* doing about one of their aims:
“Working hand-in-hand with the Vice President, and the Justice Department’s Office of Violence Against Women and other government officials, to find new ways to prevent violence against women, at home and abroad.”
1. This Council can take rape seriously and succeed in having rape kits processed immediately, and not allowing the kits to be stored away for years, or decades, and not checking for DNA match-ups within days of the rape.
2. The Council can work toward making rape a hate crime. (I’m aware that rape is considered a crime of power and control. It’s also a crime of hatred of women who the perpetrators want to control and to humiliate.)
3. This Council should also be working on prevention of the abuse of women, as well as a “one-strike-and-you’ll-out” (zero tolerance) attitude in the courts and justice department towards perpetrators.
A note to Obama: In your speech on March 11th, you mentioned experiences of women in your family and opportunities for women. I can tell you are a novice at women’s history and need to be educated about the far ranging issues that women have in American society. I wonder if the “Council” is merely a political stunt.
* http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/30/opinion/30kristof.html?_r=1
Of course the “Council” is a political stunt. If they were really serious, they’d just do these things. None of them need a “Council” to discuss them first.
It could have been more about keeping Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett on the payroll by giving her an official position. She chairs this council and Director of Public Liaison Tina Tchu will be working with Jarrett.
The work might be just sending memos around to the list of cabinet secretaries and other administrators as I haven’t seen a women’s issues activist (with the exception of Hillary) yet among this motley crew.
I’ll be looking for the Council’s web site and noting any reports.
sandi78–It would have been easy to jump to your conclusion, which I also think has a high probability, but I need a more solid foundation before I make that leap.
Here’s a quick debunking of the poll numbers you site. Basically the link says that those numbers are an apples to oranges comparison. Remember this next time someone says the MSM manipulates data, because this is a clear manipulation.
Also, the link shows how good Obama’s numbers really are right now, if the question is a simple “approve vs not approve.” Of course, these poll numbers don’t really mean anything in the long run; at the same time in their presidencies, Carter & Nixon had good numbers too.

A handy site for those interested.

I have this awful feeling that we may look back at Obama’s First 100 Days and wistfully remember them as the high mark. I personally think the damage that the Treasury Department and Fed are doing under the radar will eventually blowup in everyone’s face.
And then, we’ll all be wishing for “the good ole days.” Or we’ll be calling for their heads.
I prefer the latter!
Oh, Peggy Sue! I fear you are correct.
I was hoping for the best. But unless and until Obama comes off of the campaign trail we are in trouble.
Things happen around Obama that he has no knowledge of. He constantly blames others. He admits to signing bills and not knowing what’s in them. He laughs during an interview when discussing the economic problems we are having. He asks the American public to sacrifice while eating Kobe beef, flying in a pizza chef, and throwing parties.
These are not the traits of a leader.
I don’t understand how America voted in this sick, sick man as president. We are in for a very rough ride if we don’t get him out of office very soon! More tea, please.
A piece of friendly advice…
If you want to be taken seriously, you’d do well to tone down the hyperbole, take off the 0Hussein is TEH FASCIST SUK! lenses, and discuss serious issues in a serious manner.
You can cherrypick a Gallup poll - I could cherrypick multiple other polls, while pointing out that Gallup’s party ID weightings are completely out of whack (no one else has GOP anywhere near the weight Gallup does — the GOP is hemorrhaging voters at an increasingly rapid rate)…
I mean, “changing the Constitution, drastically increasing powers of government, and taxing away freedom and liberty (and salaries) when he said he would “change” things.”?
Exactly what constitutional change has he implemented - or even asked for? What “freedom and liberty” has he taken away? What true ’salary’ has even raised taxes? Or are you seriously suggesting that moving the top marginal tax rate from 36% to 39% — a move that affects about 3% of America — is a threat to our freedoms?
We played supply sider games under Reagan and Bush II — all it got us was a bigger deficit, while doing nothing to truly improve the lives of America earning less than 250K.
It’s high time to recognize that the last generation of GOP governing philosophy was a failure not only because the implementers were corrupt and inept — but because it’s a fundamentally flawed philosophy.
We shifted righward after the excesses of the 60 and 70s didn’t work out. We’re now shifting leftward after the excesses of the 80s, 90s, and aughts didn’t work out.
It’s pretty simple.
— but because it’s a fundamentally flawed philosophy
There lies your problem, delios. You are what we call a wingnut. Both sides, and both philosophies have good and bad in them. When you say that the ‘other’ is a fundamentally flawed philosophy, you hold a myopic view, and refuse to see the good in the differing viewpoint. You’re a party hack, we ain’t.
And when the GOP comes back to power, you bet we’ll be criticising them too. But as of now, obama is in power, and we criticise him for his abject failure.
If you want to be taken seriously, you’d do well to tone down the hyperbole, take off the 0Hussein is TEH FASCIST SUK! lenses, and discuss serious issues in a serious manner
Taken seriously by whom? No thanks, don’t want to be taken seriously by obamacrats. Too much worship there (almost like religious fundamentalism). lol
You’re calling the administration an abject failure and I’m the hack?
I also find it quite ironic that you would use the term ‘religious fundamentalism’ — in fact, it’s not just the evangelicals that have demonstrated some serious ‘religious fundamentalism’… the conservative economic dogma has no been no different — just a worshiping a different golden calf.
I don’t think you really grasp how off the deep end the GOP’s economic philosophy has gone. I guess when Grover Norquist is your intellectual heavyweight, it’s to be expected.
It would be one thing if the GOP position was a well though out response to any number of issues where the economy has touchpoints - but they don’t. The solution is ALWAYS lower taxes (and usually, focused on the top few percent). The solution is ALWAYS less regulation. The solution is ALWAYS let the free market handle it.
Doesn’t work, never has… It was government funded railroad expansion that sparked the industrial revolution. It was government spending on a space program that, along with military spending, sparked a high tech industry.
The GOP has become anti-government fanatics - just “go Galt” already and get it over with… you won’t be missed.
Hey, enjoy the echo chamber.
like I stated earlier, a wingnut. ‘They are always wrong. Nothing good out of that flawed philosophy. Any response of the GOP isn’t well thought out cos it isn’t my response, and I don’t like it.’
Its people like you who divide this nation. Can’t see the good in the opposing opinion cos you’ve already ruled it out with your prejudices. We can’t help it if you can’t understand that.
And just this alone is going to pay for the doubling of the national debt? No, there is also the cap and trade. Know how we pay farmers now not to farm? Well think of cap and trade this way. A business has just so much carbon allotment. They can stop producing when they hit that… or they can buy the carbon allotment from some business that hasn’t produced anything but still gets the allotment. Therefore, we will be paying farmers not to farm and also businesses not to make anything. All the while punishing the businesses who do produce things and forcing them to also support the businesses that don’t. Now you see why we no longer care if G.M. makes any more cars? Doesn’t matter… they are going to get a hefty carbon allotment. They can sell it to somebody who does make a car people will buy and the union members can get go on getting paid for not making cars. It is pretty simple… and you have that right. Joe the plumber had it close… he thought it was socialism… it’s actually more like communism.
With all due respect, maybe you ought to read the plan before you speak about it — because it bears little resemblance to what you seem to think it is.
First and foremost - and the reason your analogy is a bad one - the carbon permits aren’t going to just be handed out. They’ll be purchased via auction (the proceeds of which, by the way, will be returned directly to the consumer in the form of tax credits) — we won’t be ‘paying’ anyone.
Second - I think you grossly misunderstand or don’t know which companies are most impacted by by carbon emission caps. The carbon emissions produced by even the largest manufacturers pale compared to the biggest carbon polluters — namely, utilities, and especially, utilities that are overly reliant on technologically mature fossil fuel based energy.
As I said above, it’s time to get up off your knees from worshiping free market golden calf — I’m not a socialist — but it’s folly to think the free market innovates for the sake of innovation or that the free market cures all ills. It’s not socialism to suggest that a government can - and sometimes, should - nudge a market in a direction that’s of benefit to the population.
That’s all that’s happening here — a lot of utility companies which are quite profitable, but are so because they’re using cheaper technology that has detrimental environmental and health effects — are going to find old technologies which had negative impacts on communities less profitable. A lot of other companies, which are less profitable due to the higher costs of newer, healthier, more environmentally friendly technologies — are going to find themselves more profitable (as will the manufacturers of the tools and machinery necessary for such new technology).
Pollution is cost free right now. This simply adds a far from prohibitive cost to pollution - and forces the market to factor it into the equation.
That’s not socialism - it’s a country simply saying that my health - and the health of my kids and their kids - should be an economic factor that carbon polluters take into account.
O.K. tell me which parts of this aren’t more like communism:
So, the same folks who don’t pay federal taxes, but still get tax rebate checks… they will get utility checks while the rest of us have our bill doubled.
We can’t have that now can we? And, the people whose retirement funds are in part invested in utility companies… well anybody with a retirement account probably doesn’t need a retirement account… right?
Yes, we should let the government determine which industries deserve to use energy… After all, they know best for us don’t they?
Now for the kicker… tell me that pet industries… as part of pork politics are not going to get free carbon credits? Everybody knows better than that. Industries who don’t play nice with the powers that be will be unable to compete with those who pay to play. Big government always ends the same way. It ends in communism. Lenin said communism is the goal of socialism.
Docelder–Don’t tell me you were on your knees worshipping the free market golden calf?
Did you enjoy the brief lecture on the free market?
“echo chamber”–very over-used put-down that has no meaning on blogs with regulars.
That’s good -
You didn’t address a single point s/he made - but you did do a nice job taking a line of context
“a lot of utility companies which are quite profitable” but are so because they’re using cheaper technology that has detrimental environmental and health effects.
Don’t you think it was inaccurate to selectively quote him/her that way? It seems pretty clear that it wasn’t the profitability that was at issue.
But I know, I know — discussing the real issues and actual policy is a lot harder than arguing against a strawman.
Strawman… as in “if I only had a brain” strawman?
I am just quoting him. Evidently the profitable part was what stuck in his craw… otherwise why bring that part up if it is germane to the point. People will see this as a “tax and redistribute” scheme. Once middle America has it’s electric bill double and they see ACORN picketers getting rebate checks instead of electric bills… there may be a civil war. Middle America is already srttrapped enough paying for the 50% of America that doesn’t even pay federal tax. Now tell them they have to pay extra because they use electricity in their home so that these same people can get utility checks. Sell that one and see how it sells.
My biggest problem with cap and trade isn’t the cap - it’s the trade.
I think there should be an increased cost for heavy polluters — the PR hit sure as hell hasn’t been worth crap to force fossil fuel industries to adopt new technologies.
My problem with Obama’s plan is that it ignores the Enron and CDO debacles — we should have learned that creating an artificial market around trading paper and pretending that’s an honest day’s work — is a recipe for disaster.
But I have no problem with sticking it to polluters. I grew up just outside Owensville in southern Indiana - there’s a big coal plant there that used to be run by PSI (I think Cinergy runs it now). It’s been an environmental disaster. Cancer rates, asthma rates, you name it — all much higher in the area around the plant. You can’t fish in several local lakes because of selenium contamination, but that’s not as bad as the groundwater contamination — our old neighbors both developed serious health problems after moving in and had their well tested. Contaminated. Five year fight to get SOME sort of compensation from the polluter that caused it - got pittance. Had to sell their house at a big loss (you sort of have to disclose something like groundwater contamination).
I’m not interested in protecting the profits of bastards like in any way, shape or form
Same here, but they are hijacking the conservation movement. This is just just a tax and redistribution scheme. CO2 isn’t a toxin to start with. It is a natural byproduct of our respiration and is used by plants. It is not a problem. I had environmental chemistry with lab as an elective in the late 70’s. Even back then you could get acids from sulfur and nitrogen in exhaust. There are worse things than acid rain as well. But, that is not the point. The point is this is about tax and redistribution. People will still be burning coal, they will just be paying into a pool and that cost will pass to everybody with a utility bill. Meanwhile a lot of people who pay no federal tax, will be getting no utility bill at all or even a utility rebate check on the guise that we rich people are using up their air. This is the biggest sham boondoggle to date.
communism yep..thats it.
I stopped coming to this site during the primaries. The crazies took over. Obama could do no right with them, and there’s likely no debating the point. It looks like it’s still the case, sadly.
Really, an F? Obama has been pretty much what I expected: calm, reasonable, pragmatic, left-moderate. He hasn’t been perfect, but I’d say he’s a world better than the last president.
The boogeyman of the “last eight years” rears his ugly head. Why am I not surprised?
What exactly is your point? If you have a problem with me bring up the previous president when we’re grading presidents, just ignore that part.
Nope, Delios, we’ll not take your advice. We take ourselves seriously and couldn’t care less about what the hoi polloi think.
We run a pretty open blog here with a range of opinions mostly biased toward Hillary and hardly in ear shot of Obama since we infrequently, or no longer, listen to his “gifted” speeches.
Your criticism, (”FASCIST lenses”–LOL),is, O, so, dramatic, if not, tiresome. We’ll hyper our boles however we like.
Yeah, you favored Hillary…tell ya what, had she won the nomination, I’d have voted for her. She didn’t and the guy we got is just GREAT. Hillary, you probably know, even though you don’t listen to Obama’s speeches, joined his administration and is doing a very satisfactory job. She was wiser than you were. Your hatred for Obama “feels” just exactly like the wingnut hatred for anything Democratic. It isn’t pretty but it IS pretty stupid.
James, let’s get several things straight:
–your telling me “the guy we got is just great” means zilch to me,
–there are sources other than great guy’s speeches to find out nominations to gg’s cabinet,
–Hillary is doing a GREAT job at SoS, and how do you know she’s wiser than I am?,
–you don’t know whom I voted for November 4th,
–I think Obama does some pretty “stupid” things; I don’t hate Obama; it’s his arrogance and shady practices to get elected, to name only two stupid things, that I hate,
–before June ‘08, I had been a registered dem for a long time. Therefore, I laughed at my comments “feeling” like wing-nut hatred for anything Democratic.
You, James, don’t know what you’re talking about.
James G writes: She was wiser than you were. Your hatred for Obama “feels” just exactly like the wingnut hatred for anything Democratic. It isn’t pretty but it IS pretty stupid.
Thank you for that, James. I voted for Hillary in the primary, and though of course disappointed that she didn’t win, was encouraged by Obama’s quick learning curve on his way into the Presidency, and voted for him without hesitation. The alternative was McCain, for God’s sake.
Hillary was, by the way, after the primary, a graceful and cheerful advocate of Obama, and it’s beyond me why the wambulance chase after Obama continues here.
There’s a good deal of ambivalence– uh, well, less kindly speaking, cognitive dissonance here. For example, GOPMom seems to think that Obama’s efforts to wind down the Iraq adventure aren’t happening fast enough, while we recall that his Republican counterpart, John McCain, had no interest whatsoever in so doing.
This isn’t healthy. It isn’t thought-provoking. It isn’t insightful. It isn’t even cathartic, as the prose of the authors here attests to: it just gets angrier and more frustrated.
That isn’t even close to the truth. McCain said it plainly, that he hated war. None of us here have any right to dispute what McCain said. He has paid for that right. Meanwhile, I don’t know that Obama has even been straight with us once so far. He seems to think all is fair when campaigning and he is still campaigning for next time. So parse everything he says.
Docelder writes: That isn’t even close to the truth. McCain said it plainly, that he hated war. None of us here have any right to dispute what McCain said.
See, this is what I was talking about when I said that this blog was an insular island of cognitive dissonance: Though he claims to hate war, McCain also said he wouldn’t consider pulling troops out of Iraq until the “war” had been “won”. McCain has never spelled out exactly what “winning” entails. Perhaps he means the death of every Iraqi, which would surely put the “win” on this unwarranted invasion of Iraq and genocide of its citizens in pursuit of Dubya’s “man who tried to kill my Daddy”. I don’t really know; as I say, he’s never spelled it out.
And, I doubt that you care. I believe that you either consider Iraqis to be all madcap terrorists by, I dunno, genetic disposition or something, or you just don’t consider them to be real people who kiss their children on the forehead before trudging off to work in the morning, same as you.
I’d be interested to know.
Delios, as a teacher in a large urban school district, I am in contact with thousands of students, most of whom are students of color. To a person, I have never encountered any supporters of BO who knew even these three facts: 1) then Senator Clinton received more votes than him in the Democratic primary and 2) earned more pledged delegates from votes directly cast for her; and 3) under HI law, a person born in another country could obtain a Certification of Live Birth from HI as long as an adult swore one of his parents resided in that state for one year preceding his birth.
In other words, speaking empirically, many of the people who support BO appear to have absolutely no idea who he is.
A teacher????? I hope not English: “1) then Senator Clinton received more votes than him…” Probably a typo and not validation of ya’ll wearing a tin hat in your insistance that Obama is not born in the USA.
Good lord.
Where? I hope it’s not a public school.
I’ve never been one who favors internet outings, but I draw the line at nutso conspiracy theorists teaching children.
ONE MORE TIME….
I truly fear the fact that you teach. Hopefully not logic.
1. It was a delegate race, not a vote-based race. If the shoe had been on the other foot, you’d better believe that Hillary would have leveraged her delegate lead in exactly the same way as Barack did. Moreover, those votes were, for the millionth time, from two races where Hillary, then the presumptive nominee according to the media you now so despise, was running unopposed by Barack Obama and where, in fairness, she wasn’t supposed to be running. (She had agreed to participate in the punishment meted out by the DNC to Michigan and Florida for moving their primaries without authorization. It’s a separate case whether or not that should have happened, but she agreed to it, then changed her mind in a pretty obvious and not very skillful or impressive bit of political gamesmanship.)
2. You’re implying that caucuses don’t count, somehow. Sorry, but in the rules as they were then layed out, caucus delegates counted exactly the same as primary delegates. Those were the rules, if you don’t like the rules to a given game, there is no law demanding you play it. If Hillary had won a bunch of caucuses but lost more primaries than she did, don’t tell me she would have just said, “Oh, well, those votes don’t really count, you win, Barack!” though you clearly expect him to have done the same.
3. Simply absurd. Basically, by your logic no one from Hawaii can ever be president. And, would you make this case if Barack Obama’s name and fleshtones were the same as John McCain’s? I’m not one to yell “racist” at every argument made against the President, but this one really walks like the proverbial duck.
In other words, grow a brain, please.

“FAIL” after 100 days in office, your still running a presidential campaign.
And a most important grade of all:
“FAIL” for still not proving you’re a legal, Constitutional, Article II president.
I would not be so quick to characterize Obama’s first 100 days as an abject failure. It really depends on your point of view.
If I were to take Obama’s side for a moment, these are some of his achievements over that time:
1. Picked up a record number of airline mileage points - all on taxpayer expense.
2. Broke the Guinness Book of Records of flawless teleprompter speaking until this past week.
3. Made Bush’s deficit look like chump change.
4. Found more ways of raising taxes than all prior Presidents over the past 50 years combined.
5. Successfully surrendered to every country in the world in record time.
6. After having never ran anything, has successfully become the Chaiman of the Board of General Motors and Chrysler as well as several major banks in just a few months.
7. Fulfilled his military obligation by agreeing to allow several Navy SEAL sharpshooters to whack a couple of Somalian Pirates.
8. Successfully scared the living crap out of New Yorkers by faking another 9/11 attack with Air Force One - and it wasn’t even April Fools Day.
9. Hired everyone he said he wasn’t going to hire into his administration.
10. Has created more Czars than Russia every had in its history.
11. Successfully fought off a potential pandemic flu by telling people to wash their hands.
12. Was smart enough to name a buffoon who provides comic relief which forces people to make sure nothing happens to Obama.
13. Has become the hippest President in history.
13. And is the only President who has made Chris Matthews leg tingle.
So let’s be fair and give this man his due.
termo — brilliant and very funny!
gosh darn, reminds me Rev. Wright: God damn America. And his faithful disciple, BHO is implementing those policies.
roflmao…
I’m surprised no one asked Obama how you say H1N1 in Pig Latin.
With all the unkept camapign promises to choose from, the one that sticks in my craw is the lie told regarding bringing our troops home. Don’t we all remember how he attempted to best Hillary in debates by saying he’d start bringing the troops home in 60 days? And then it became 6 months. And then by the end of 2009. And then it was 18 months. And now the story line is that it might be by the end of 2010 or longer.
And his sycophants are praising BO for being a “flexible leader who truly listens to his military advisors”!! That makes me furious!
One of the things that persuaded me to vote for John McCain was that he was frank about how long it might take to get us out of Iraq. He knew his comments about time lines could be unpopular, but he spoke from logic, from experience and from honesty about what would be involved in such a task.
Am I the only one who recalls how Obama mocked McCain for saying it couldn’t be done in 60 days or 6 months? BO practically laughed in McCain’s face for what is now obviously an accurate assessment.
McCain told us all the truth and lost. BO lied and laughed at his opponent and now he’s running the country.
I give BO an F in citizenship.
“regarding bringing our troops home”
He never had any intention of doing that. In fact thanks to his apology tour there is less and less chance of them coming home any time soon. You don’t win wars by apologizing to your enemy.
Yep, that middle class tax cut has apparently disappeared. Let’s see…wasn’t it $600 per family? Changed to payroll deductions lowered by $13/week…those will come due next tax return. Grade: F
Notice how the bots have popped up today. I don’t know why since he’s on tee vee night and day…we have our pick of when and what to dispute. He’s a lying liar who lies, after all.
$13 per week times 52 weeks? $676. Who said that cut has to be made up next tax return?
Considering all that Barack Obama has had to deal with during his first 100 days, I believe he’s doing quite well.
Considering that 6 million of us are unemployed and HAVE NO PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS, I don’t think that computes. $13/week may be an average. Low income I’m sure is less. You will be taxed on your income; if deductions fall short, you will have a bill to pay. There has been no adjustment of the tax code and one is not planned.
Yes, and BO’s supporters think he is still the best because he plays “the game” better. His supporters don’t value honor or morality. They honor winning, money, power and image above all other things. They are superficial and shallow. But that is also why they are susceptible to BO’s word games. Those of us who are immune, can’t even listen to BO without becoming frustrated. He is a divisive force of people and of the very fabric of this nation.
How true. It’s embarrassing to see myself of 40 years back. An immature, silly wannabe revolutionary romantic. Today, knowing how destructive it all was/is, I truly despise the Left and their front man.
My, AnnieCollier, to think all these 40 years I’ve envied you who did the war protest on Washington, played at Woodstock, and got tear-gassed at the ‘68 Democratic Convention…but I should feel proud that I stayed home and watched it all on tv, and didn’t sell out to the left?
Then I faulted my parents for their “no nonsense” discipline, but now I should be proud I didn’t march? OK.
There is some remnant of the 60’s in the far left movement of today. Some of it is still wanting now, what they wanted back then… even though the world is a much different place now. I guess like I would be, if I had a 67 corvette. It would be cool, all that is true… but where could you drive it, park it etc. It would be nostalgic but not all that practical of a car in 2009. I built a split bamboo fly rod about ten years ago. It is beautiful and I fished with it just once. The graphite one I built is so much better to fish with. I think we are going to see much of that same truths emerge about these lofty socialistic goals. I think it all looks better until you actually have it.
I’m not referring to marches against the VietNam War. Our President lied to us then as well. I marched in every one in SF…with my small children in tow.
But jumping up and down, in the face of the police in People’s Park (I was there but not in any faces) or on the march routes? Embarrassing and immature. As for Chicago in 68, we were nothing if not set-up for failure by the Left…naive. I once overheard a conversation between Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman laughing about their being so much more relevant and important than their wives…one of whom paid the dinner check. We thought they knew what was going on…they were a joke. My “progressive brothers” didn’t seem to have misogyny in their vocabulary.
Organic food, gardening, recycling, preventative health techniques, meditation, yoga…many good things that are solid came to our culture out of the 60s. But free love, all my friends who died because of drugs…including my only brother…not so much and all pretty stupid. Free Love? No such thing and what a price we paid. I detest that we relied on The Pill and abortion…opening us up to much psychological damage; to STDs and Aids. The boundaries were tossed aside to our detriment. No, there’s no need to glamorize the 60’s as many of the Left do. Yeah, yeah hindsight and regrets. I have many and if not for my life today, I’d be bitter rather than just realistic. I’m not the only one. As I recall one of the former editors of Ramparts wrote a blistering 1st person condemnation of the Panthers. Tom Wolfe merely wrote of the naive (and embarrassing) wannabes in Leonard Bernstein’s NY apartment.
Last weekend I attended the 60th anniversary party at Nepenthe in Big Sur where I worked for many years. Nepenthe was an epicenter for the counter culture back then. I was very happy to see so many old friends from the Nepenthe Family of those days but would I spend time today raising legal funds for The Soledad Brothers (a bloody disaster) as we did then? No. For the most part we talked about our families, grandchildren and how amazing it is that we survived. Not one conversation about politics. And yes, I’m pretty socially conservative as a result of all that.
It is disgraceful that in our culture we worship youth and neglect if not completely disregard wisdom that comes from age and experience. Young people think they know everything. When in reality, the longer you have been here you realize just how little you do know.
And how little we did know. My parents were right about soooooooo many things.
Wow, Annie! What a fascinating story! You can proudly say you’ve lived your life to the fullest instead of just killing time!
Some of us learned a different lesson: That the 1960s paradigm was flawed on both ends of the spectrum.
Unbelievable. Just unbelievable. What a bunch of “thoughtful” people so many of you are, led by the author of this particular blog.
Dear GOPMom….Dearest GOPMom, you are obviously very young and inexperienced. Given your name, I won’t try to offer you much…just this: Google is your friend. Here is a list from TWO hits out of the who knows how many there were….”Obama’s Achievments in first hundred days.”
Honestly, top ten from the woman’s site, one would think, might resonate with you, but what the hey….it takes all kinds. Anyway…..
Appropriated $19 billion in the stimulus package to help implement an electronic medical record system
The White House streams every event with the president on its website, even press events,”
Chief among those was a $2,500 tax credit to help offset the cost of tuition (among other expenses) for those seeking a college education. Nearly five million families are expected to save $9 billion, according to Treasury officials.
Since the passage of the economic stimulus package in mid-February, the Obama Department of Transportation has approved 2,500 highway projects. The movement of stimulus money out the door has been as swift as it has been effective: $9.3 billion has been spent in all 50 states. Touting its impact, DOT officials say 260,000 jobs are expected from this investment
Cars: The automobile industry at the White House and Congress’s behest has undergone seismic structural changes, managerial reorganization, and massive cuts in employment. But for all the tough love, the president has put in place the framework for an industry recovery. Perhaps the most significant of steps was to allocate $2 billion in stimulus cash for advanced batteries systems. One high-ranking Hill aide called battery technology “the next big frontier” in the
. Pakistan: Cognizant of a destabilizing situation in Pakistan, the administration’s diplomatic team, with a major assist from Japan, secured $5 billion in aid commitments “to bolster the country’s economy and help it fight terror and Islamic radicalism” within the country
Cities: More than any prior president, Obama has put a spotlight on America’s struggling cities, even creating an office of Urban Policy in the White House. It is the Justice Department, however, that lays claim to one of the most consequential of urban affairs achievements. Through the Recovery Act, DOJ secured $2 billion for Byrne Grants, which funds anti-gang and anti-gun task forces. The money, cut during the Bush years, is expected to have massive ramifications on inner-city crime and violence.
Engaging the Muslim World: While certainly discussed, foreign affairs experts insist that Obama’s engagement with the Muslim world has been at once remarkable and under-appreciated. From the first interview with Al Arabiya to his Nowruz address to the Iranian people, to his proclamation that “American is not at war with Islam” during an appearance in Turkey, seasoned observers have been routinely impressed. “Through these [statements and interviews],” said one Democratic foreign policy hand, “He has been able to dramatically change America’s image in that region.”
Forests: Since taking office, the White House has put under federal protection more than two million acres of wilderness, thousands of miles of river and a host of national trails and parks. The conservation effort - the largest in the last 15 years - came with the stroke of a pen when Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 in late March.
10. Tone: Leaving a meeting at the White House on Tuesday a progressive member of the House of Representatives commented to the Huffington Post just how impressed she was with the president’s manner. “He is so calm,” said the member, “and has a great ability to make you feel like you’re being respected and listened to.”
A Top Ten List for the First 100 Days:
10. Repealed the global gag rule: With the stroke of a pen, President Obama overturned the global gag rule and once again allowed millions of women around the world to access critical reproductive health care services.
9. Moved to overturn the HHS midnight regulation: The administration took immediate action to rescind this rule, which jeopardizes women’s health by denying them access to complete and accurate health care and information.
8. Supporting teens’ health over ideology: The president, in his budget, called for evidence-based, medically accurate sex education, in contrast to the failed abstinence-only policies .
7. Expanding access to family planning: In the president’s budget, he included a commonsense Medicaid waiver to expand family planning under Medicaid, increasing acces for more women in need.
6. Restored affordable birth control: The president signed legislation to restore access to affordable birth control for millions of college students and low-income women, especially important in these tough economic times.
5. Formed the White House Council on Women and Girls: President Obama established this council to focus on a wide range of issues facing American women and their families, including the high rate of unintended pregnancies and the alarming number of sexually transmitted infections.
4. Nominated strong women’s champions to key cabinet posts: The president nominated Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who understands that improving the status of women is not simply a moral imperative; it is necessary to building democracies around the globe. He also nominated HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, a longtime champion of women’s health and a strong advocate for health care reform.
3. Expanding access to Plan B: Under the Obama administration, the FDA now supports over-the-counter sales of Plan B (emergency contraception) to women 17 years and older.
2. Focusing on AIDS outreach: President Obama has made a strong commitment to developing a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy to reduce the number of HIV infections, increase access to care, and reduce HIV-related health disparities to address the growing HIV/AIDS crisis among women and girls in the United States.
1. Committed to health care reform: President Obama has laid down the law that we’ll have health care reform this year — making access to quality, affordable health care one of his key priorities. Hallelujah — not a moment too soon!
So — we are off to an incredible start. Though as everyone involved in improving the long-term health of our nation knows, it’s not just about the last 100 days — it’s about the 100 after that, and the 100 after that. It’s about making the health of women and young people a priority every day, and in every policy decision. An A for the first 100 days.
Finally, from The Rude Pundit, this: “You know what bugs Republicans? Not that he reads a teleprompter, but that he reads the shit out of that teleprompter. Remember: the last guy couldn’t even read it without seeming like a smiling special needs kid who spelled “cat” correctly.”
“$19 billion in the stimulus package to help implement an electronic medical record system”
Good idea? Yes. But how does this instantly “stimulate” economic recovery? The problem is that you bought into the uneducated kool aid Obama was dishing out.
“$2,500 tax credit to help offset the cost of tuition (among other expenses) for those seeking a college education.”
Once again, with college costs ranging from $25,000 to over $40,000 per year, how does that provide immediate economic recovery? It doesn’t. It’s just welfare. You see students already have their aid packages in place and don’t need this very much.
The government projected that this so-called it would take 2 years to see the effects of this so-called Stimulus Plan. This Stimulus Plan was a very apparent spending bill to payoff Democratic Party favors that had been laying in wait for a long time. It also is part of Obama’s larger plan to “remake America.” You have to be very dense not to know what he means by that.
Obama has done very little positive things and too many detrimental actions that will hurt us economically for a long time to come.
Pakistan is a mess and at a tipping point that may hand nuclear weapons over to the Taliban and Al Qaeda. This is completely on his watch. You want to call this a success?
“While certainly discussed, foreign affairs experts insist that Obama’s engagement with the Muslim world has been at once remarkable and under-appreciated.”
Other than anti-Israel and anti-U.S. foreign policy people (mostly on Daily Kos), who in their right mind can call his actions regarding any foreign leaders a success? He has bad mouthed the U.S. around the world, has apologized for things he should not, and has significantly weakened the U.S. throughout the world.
This clown makes Neville Chamberlain look like Alexander the Great.
The bottom line is that Obama and his key people are opposed to Israel and have placed Israel at great risk.
“Tone”
His tone is clearly arrogant. Period.
Rasmussen has been the most accurate poll based on past elections and Obama’s popularity poll numbers continue to dwindle. In fact people who strongly approve and strongly disapprove is not almost equal. And the polling on his policies are not at all good.
Obama has already sown the seeds of his own demise.
I certainly don’t need my “medical records” accessed by anyone but my doctor and the insurance company and we got alone fine for decades without a 19 billion dollar invitation for the rest of the world to take a look.
And I don’t know who gave Soertoro/Obama the idea that a $2,500 tuition break for college students will miraculously produce a job at the end of four years when we are losing more than half a million jobs a month! College grads will probably have to join the growing community of ex-pats working in foreign countries.
I certainly don’t know what world he’s been living in but it certainly isn’t the same one we live in. He’s a mess, no organization, no insight into how we got into this mess and no insight into how to get us out; plus his detachment from reality is mind boggling! And one of the best examples of that is the recent buzzing of Ground Zero. Whether or not he ordered it, his staff either went around him or he didn’t get the cruelty of having a big airplane followed by two jet fighters chasing each other through the buildings of New York. They said he was “furious” but we saw no fury, just more excuses.
C.S. writes: I certainly don’t need my “medical records” accessed by anyone but my doctor and the insurance company …
Unless of course you visit a doctor or (touch wood) an emergency room far from home. In this case, you would of course be glad to know that your medical history, warts and all, is at the fingertips of the physicians involved. It might even save your life; that’s the whole point.
So what’s the downside? Maybe I’m missing something– give me an example of how this information could be exploited for fell intent.
Since you asked, I can think of one right off the top: have you seen the old movie, “Philadelphia”, with Tom Hanks? Then you can surely see that access to one’s medical history can potentially cause catastrophic repercussions.
I personally do not want my employer to be able to check on every UTI I’ve ever had or the time I tried Restylane.
Portia etc writes Since you asked, I can think of one right off the top: have you seen the old movie, “Philadelphia”, with Tom Hanks?
Hmmm… usually all of my comments are deleted so I figured I’d let yours stand as the last word, Portia– however I seem to be still here, so I’ll try Larry and Susan’s patience once more with a response, thus:
Fascinating.
Demme would be crushed to learn that the message you drew from his film is that everything would have been okay if the closet door had remained closed.
What he was actually trying to say is that an HIV positive person is capable of performing his job and is not a danger or threat to his coworkers.
Further, in the film, inasmuch as Andy Beckett’s condition was revealed to his coworkers at his law firm by the lesions on his face, your statement could not possibly be more unrelated to the issue of electronic medical record keeping.
Look, we seem to be on wildly different pages here. You appear to be talking about some sort of public database where I can look up Rush Limbaugh’s urine toxology to see if he’s clean.
In the real world, Obama has committed a sum of money to encouraging hospitals to move away from paper record keeping to electronic, which is estimated to save 11 billion dollars a year.
Yes, I know, it seems like a simple and reasonable thing for a government to do.
Ask yourself: why have I allowed myself to have been misled about the purpose of this legislation?
You must decide, grasshopper.
termo writes: Once again, with college costs ranging from $25,000 to over $40,000 per year, how does that [2,500 tax credit to help offset the cost of tuition (among other expenses) for those seeking a college education] provide immediate economic recovery?
Well, obviously, termo, this tax credit, by enabling additional consumer spending, while at the same time providing an impetus for a well educated upcoming generation of–
[sigh]
Oh, what’s the use. You don’t care about any of this, really, you’re just getting off a little unfounded bitching. I’ll leave you to it, carry on, sorry for the interruption [shaking head].
Yes, you can see where you are headed. Still, why are high school kids even going to want to go to college now, if it costs 25K a year and there are no good jobs for them once they graduate owing 100K? I realize education is important… just look at it practically though… is this a good investment anymore? Traditionally, yes it has been good. In the old economy it was good. In the economy Obama is building… maybe it won’t pay back so well? At any rate if you don’t have the $25K and can’t get a loan, then 2.5K isn’t doing much… unless you are going to trade school somewhere. I think we ought to be reworking college altogether. We don’t need another single brick and mortar library. We should provide online government sponsored college level degrees free to anybody who wants to devote the time and effort to earn one. Anybody with Internet access can learn from anywhere at anytime. Simple. Quit supporting traditional colleges altogether.
Docelder writes: I realize education is important… just look at it practically though… is this a good investment anymore?
Yes, I think it is. For example, writing english correctly helps to insure that you are understood. [laughing]
James, if I understand your list correctly, BO is to be applauded for:
(A) throwing money at problems (our money!)
(B) making more promises when he’s not kept the ones made before the 100 days started
(C) signing anything put in front of him
(D) being “calm”
All I can tell you is my standards are a bit higher than that for a Commander-in-Chief. My standards are a bit higher than that for the guy who works the toll booth on I-95.
Have another big, big gulp of kookaid, James. BTW, I don’t want “electronic” access to my medical records. Let’s see how much money there is left to actually fund all those big plans. W did a lot of planning too but often didn’t have any money for them. This one is no different.
James, they’re not worthy– and neither am I. This is some very nice work, and I’m in awe.
Maybe being a moderate dem then (moderate now, not a dem), I knew I was no revolutionary, government-building-bombing, leftie, and hardly a conservative. Also, I had to finish college and get a job because the “no nonsense” discipline had sunk into my brain.
(Hell, we didn’t know then our brains hadn’t wholly formed to have an excuse to move in with our parents and sit in front of the tv (computer) eating cheetos all day!)
I was no bomb maker either arran and no one I knew would have sat in the same room with Bill Ayers or his egocentric wife.
GOPMom, your statement
Reminds me of the Eagles’ lyrics
Some folks who believed the hype and elevated O in their minds to Messiah stature are going to have a long way to fall indeed.
OK. Today I saw a CNN headline “What’s ahead for Obama in the next 100 days.” Are they going to celebrate the 2nd 100 days, then 3rd 100 days, and so on? Because this is getting ridiculous.
It’s pathetic! Has the media ever been this concerned about a President and his first 100 days before? The answer is no. Because they, the media, insist on treating Obama differently, they are doing him and this country a disservice. This is nothing more than affirmative action. Before any of you bots call me a racist, I have been a liberal democrat for over 36 years, and I voted for Jesse Jackson back in the day… It’s as if they expect so little from this guy, that they need to applaud every little insignificant action this man takes.
Dear God, say it isn’t so. I’m so sick of his daily/nightly appearances.
Obama is President because he is black. If a white person with the same record attempted the same thing, he would have been laughed off the stage. I admit, this bothers me. He is the Affirmative Action President. This country wanted to makeup for the racial sins of the past so they voted for a man with no experience and no real understanding of domestic or foreign policy for the most important job in the world.
As for Hillary going to work for Obama, not being in the Senate presently is a good thing. Had she remained, any obstruction to Obama would have been labeled as “racism” or an attempt to torpedo his presidency. The bond between blacks and the Clintons was broken during the primary and is still fragile. She is trying to reestablish that relationship but I fear that things will never be the same again. Like it or not, to have a future in the Democrat Party, she needs their support. So we will have to continue to watch her bend over backwards trying to prove she’s not a “racist”.
She did not have to vote for the Obama Pelosi Pork Stimulus Bill. When everything domestically starts to go to hell, she will be free of any blame. Still, Obama betrayed Dean, Dodd and so many others and so I don’t trust that he has Hillary’s best interests at heart.
We all should remember that Mr. Soertoro, aka Barack Hussein Obama, was never really elected; he was chosen by the Democratic party by taking delegates from other candidates. If the then Senator Clinton has been allowed to keep all of her votes, she would have been the presidential candidate. You can steal a car and keep it for years but it is never really your car and you can steal an election but it never really makes you a winner.
Unmentionable writes: Obama is President because he is black. If a white person with the same record attempted the same thing, he would have been laughed off the stage. I admit, this bothers me. He is the Affirmative Action President.
Larry? Susan?
I present to you: your reader base.
GOP-MOM: I looked at your article on Obama’s slipping poll numbers and couldn’t help but notice you got your numbers completely wrong. Obama’s current Gallup approval rating is 63% yet you stated it is 56%. Considering that’s the basis of your entire blog post, I’d say that fact is rather important. Please don’t let your bias get in the way of the facts.
warehouse, I’m not optimistic about Hillary going the whole four years. I think she’s being hamstrung by 0 to keep her from campaigning and running against him…and that’s the only reason he put her in. The racists will eventually play that old story one too many times and it will start to sound ridiculous and backfire.
I’m gonna repeat this, Larry and Susan: This [posts consisting entirely of Obama wambulance chasing] isn’t healthy. It isn’t thought-provoking. It isn’t insightful. It isn’t even cathartic, as the prose of the authors here attests to: it just gets angrier and more frustrated.
You have a great deal to offer the blogosphere, especially inasmuch as Larry is an intelligence professional, but it is sadly overshadowed by this senseless Obama-whack-a-mole game you have been engaged in for the past couple years.
Yes, we should be coming together right now as these are hazardous times. But, where is the divisiveness originating from? You may believe it is from those of us who listen to Obama and really, really just don’t get it. We don’t get the adulation, we don’t get the splendor and we don’t see in him savior like qualities. Then there are those who are almost mesmerized by everything Obama… even mesmerized by his dog. Obama has a chance to be the greatest President of all time. All he would need to do is appreciate and respect the broad center of America. Instead he fosters an environment of partisan division. I won. Yes, we all know that by now. Obama mocks those who attempt to have a voice and to be heard. You may not like that the divide exists, and I don’t either. We just disagree as to the ultimate source of that divide. This is only going to get a lot worse before it can get better I am afraid.
Crippled –
What you seem to think is whining without basis is more accurately characterized as the intelligent coming together of people who disagree with the adulation of a fraud and who, according to our Constitution, have every right to do so. If the posters here seem to get more frustrated and angrier, it is because with each passing day we see more and more to arouse our frustration and anger.
This site is one of the few which still allows free speech. You must realize if that were not the case, you would not be able to read your own posts here. Be thankful NO QUARTER tolerates all points of view.

I’m treading on dangerous turf here, Portia, but I can tell you from personal experience that No Quarter has a long and checkered history of deleting dissenting comentary. Not obscene, not off-topic, just dissent.
You’re just going to have to take my word for it. The evidence is, well, deleted.
Hopefully, this odd policy is no longer enforced, in which case you can read this comment, and I can read yours.
since there are dozens if not hundreds of websites that are anti- 0bama, im curious as to just who is being polled. im a registered dem and no one has ever called to ask for my opinion. are they just polling those who already voted for him? i dont believe for a minute that 63% of americans approve of the job he is doing.but even if its true that means 37% (one third of the country) disapproves.and i think that number is growing steadily.
remember his supporters could sign up for the announcement of the VP choice and would receive the info via their cell phone…. Maybe that’s who they must be calling…
The 3am call that went so badly……..
I couldn’t find any other place to post this. I hope someone picks up on it, and highlights it, because it really is an indication of the “marie antoinette” atttitude of our new FASHIONISTA QUEEN, Michelle Obama.
I was amazed to read that Michelle Obama went to hand out food at a food bank. So far, so good, that’s nice.
BUT SHE SHOWED UP TO HAND OUT FOOD TO THE NEEDY IN FECKING $540 Lanvin “trainers” [tennis shoes for us normal people]!!!!
That’s just insulting. It shows poor judgment. It shows a wholly elitist attitude. Maybe she’s eaten too much arugula, and it’s clouded her brain.
Or maybe she just thinks she’s “special.” Who knows?
There’s a poll. Most people who’ve taken it think what she did is offensive. What do you think?
