The Decline And Fall Of Democracy

I’m starting to develop thoughts that have never previously held any appeal to me.
I’m beginning to hope that our political system collapses. That it all comes down. Every last part of it.
Before I start sounding like the Unabomber, let me explain why (in great brevity): because it’s becoming increasingly evident that this incarnation of democracy is past redemption. The process of decay has been a long one, to be sure, but has hit warp-speed since January.
Corruption is endemic in politics, criminals are given positions that they shouldn’t even dream of, the desires of us plebs have never counted for less and the mainstream media has defaulted on its core mission, that of providing objective information about the government and its policies.
The latest instance of all this (at least, it was at the time of writing this morning – no doubt another case of malfeasance has since cropped up) is Kurt Conyers’ decision to kill a possible congressional probe into ACORN’s extremely dodgy dealings.
Having previously voiced support for investigating ACORN, Conyers has turned tail and fled, such is the might of the community organizers. Are we really still debating whether or not ACORN is shady?
Compared to monarchical/papal/feudal rule, democracy is but a pink, wailing newly-born. Its chances of outlasting those forms of government are looking slimmer by the day.

Unfortunately, I haven’t ever seen any evidence that when governments collapse that corruption goes away.
I don’t want the government to fall per se: I just want to round up all the guilty ones and put them on trial for treason (imo that is the overarching crime in all of this) and punish them accordingly. Oops I forgot, I’d restore the old penalties for treason first.
Admittedly that’s probably trials for 434 members of the congress & the whole SC. And we’d also need trials for practically every bank ceo, all the defense contractors… It might take a while.
NomNomNom,
Agree with restoring the old penalties and you are correct, but I’m (melodramatically) imagining more than just the fall of the government.
The profound reform that is needed will not come from within politics. By the time politicians reach the upper levels, they are beholden to so many different interests that meaningful reform is just about impossible.
Cynical, I know, but realistic…
Yes, our politicians are corrupt and engaging in criminal activity and are often accessories in very serious illegal conduct. THey are using out tax dollars to further their and others benefit.
I am so disappointed in Congressman Conyers over these past couple of years. Did he make deals to drop his investigation in improperly using his Congressional staff.
But, be sure, the people can fire him. And as Congress may make the federal laws, but obviously DO NOT ENFORCE or follow them, we do have people who do. And, this should be brought to our US Attorneys for legal action.
