Michelle Obama’s arms are transformational. They are representative of a new kind of woman: strong, vigorous, intelligent and loving. And they are a mother’s arms.
It’s bad enough that the Washington Post publishes the drivel of the sniveling, stuck-up snob,Sally Quinn, but that they’re actually featuring her ode to Michelle Obama’s arms — literally and metaphorically — is too much to take. Check out the left column at the top of the home page of the Washington Post:

Now, you’re going to have to read Larry’s entire article to get the irony of Quinn’s attacks on Palin, but here’s a sampling:
I was puzzled by the crazy attack that Sally Quinn launched on Sarah Palin, Republican V.P. nominee, because it was so over the top. Sally’s view? A woman with five kids has no business being Vice President. (Of course, no one made that argument to Joe Biden when he was a widower and single dad working in Washington as a Senator. But I digress.) Here’s Sally’s latest ranting:
Sarah Palin has five children. She is nursing her fifth child, an infant with Down syndrome. Her 17-year-old unmarried child is pregnant. Palin has spoken against sex education or the teaching of contraception. When her water broke with her Down Syndrome baby she got on a plane and flew eight hours back to Alaska, making it only hours before the birth, a risky decision for a pregnant woman of any age. After delivering one child she went back to work the next day. After the birth of her fifth child, she was back in the office after a few days.
I would like to hear what women think of her priorities. Do they believe that her first priority is as a mother or as a governor? Will her first priority be as a mother or as a Vice President or a President? One in three Vice Presidents become President. John McCain is a 72-year-old cancer survivor. As Vice President, Palin could ascend to the highest office in the land at any moment. Do women believe she should relegate her job to second place or her children to second place? Does she have to make such a choice? Every woman, and particularly every woman who works, including me, understands that the conflicts and the guilt are always there in a way that they are not for men.
So what’s her problem? Well, to use her logic, she’s a lousy, irresponsible mother. She was working as a journalist at the Washington Post, had a fling with the boss and married him, and then, at the advanced age of 41, had a child. …
It is well-known that Sally Quinn treated the Clintons like “trailer trash” when they attempted to join D.C. society during Bill Clinton’s two administrations.
But somehow Michelle Obama — who’s dropped the black power mantra to portray a 1950s-style motherly and wifely role — is superior?
People like Sally Quinn can’t stand — they actually fear — women who dare to stand up and take positions of authority beyond the traditional roles typically assumed by First Ladies.
I couldn’t bring myself to read all of Quinn’s column, but here’s another excerpt sent to me by Lyn:
“May I change the subject,” said a prominent Washington theologian at a recent dinner. The conversation had been high-minded — religion, philosophy, the nature of evil. “I’d like to talk about Michelle Obama’s arms,” he said.
He is a big fan of those arms. We then began a discussion about the significance of the first lady’s arms. Actually, it turned out to be equally serious. Michelle Obama’s arms, we determined, were transformational. Her arms are representative of a new kind of woman: young, strong, vigorous, intelligent, accomplished, sexual, powerful, embracing and, most of all, loving.
Today is Mother’s Day. Today we should celebrate Michelle Obama’s arms as the arms of a mother.

I know very few mothers from the past, my own included, who would not fit this “new” category of mother that Quinn writes of: “strong, vigorous, intelligent and loving.” And my mother is twenty years older than Michelle Obama.
Not to take anything away from Michelle Obama - I think she probably is a fantastic mother. But what a hack of a writer Quinn is to write as if she discovered something never-before-seen in Michelle Obama.

I felt the same way when I read this - right away I thought of Hillary. “Strong, vigorous, intelligent, and loving” - Hillary showed that through her actions - her work as a first lady (that she wasn’t required to do), as a senator, and by her treatment of Chelsea - how she shielded her from publicity and gave her as normal a childhood as she could.

So, Hillary’s qualities (as shown by her actions) are discounted, but Michelle’s qualities are PRESUMED by her ARMS (and her actions to the contrary - losing her law license, strongarming a doubling in salary simply because her husband was a senator, denying healthcare to the poor at her job, advocating separatism - aren’t noticed).
Pfffttt. No different than Obama - he’s hailed for his words, but not judged by his actions which contradict the glorious words. Wow, it’s all theatre, reality doesn’t matter anymore.

anyway, the gist of MO’s thesis was that when black people “assimilate” with the white community they become more comfortable with white people/less comfortable with black people, lose touch with the black community and give back less to the black community.
she didn’t exactly place a value judgement on this, because she was just supposed to be objectively analyzing her data, but i think that the obvious conclusion was that she believed it was bad for blacks to assimilate with whites because then they do less to bring up the rest of the community that they left behind.

Thanks for taking the time to post all this. It’s reminding me of a good article I read recently - the basic thesis was that as blacks move into middle-classness and experience equity, many of the institutions (such as Wright’s church) stand to lose money - so they keep pushing separatism and rejection of middle-classness, for their *own* benefit. They try to keep their own parishioners broke and angry.
I think it’s similar to Obama’s infantalizing change in welfare laws - he changed the law back to pre-Clinton, so that people can get welfare for life again, now. That’s not helping them, that’s keeping them dependent - for generations. But, hey, they’ll vote for him.
In both cases, the actions taken are really for the benefit of the institution, not the people. But pointing that out is probably RACIST - keeping your own people down is okay, though.

At that point in her life (the Princeton years), she needed to identify with a group first instead of being part of the human experience. That’s not so different from other twenty-somethings. But, her heart was attracted to negativity rather than positive relationship building with the rest of the students.
It will remain to be seen how much she’s matured beyond her radical roots.
The media is trying to polish the chip on her shoulder, but while pop culture will embrace it as change, the critical thinkers will still be viewing her with a rather skeptical eye.
The thesis is a starting point to get to know Michelle Obama, whom the taxpayers are supporting. Sad, really.

My issue has never been with Michelle Obama. Many of us well-meaning women have ended up in relationships with lousy two-timing men. (And I still have a feeling Obama’s “down low” predilections will surface and bite him in the butt some day.) I have never disliked Michelle herself.

More interesting still, no-one mentions how Sojourner Truth alone of all the black suffragettes did not cave and support Frederick Douglass’ backroom deal for the 14th amendment, a deal which permanently split the relationship between white women and black women working together for women’s voting and other civil rights.

I think it’s related to the decline in both republicans and dems, and the growth in independents. We’re tired of biased media. I saw a chart, I think it said dems have fallen to 36%, and indies have grown to 35%. Of course, the MSM only talks about the decline in repubs.

It is the media that is pumping her up. Secondly, who is being polled to give her these numbers? Remember during the campaign how the Oboma fanatics would swarm polls to skew the results. Polls are meaningless…..

BS to your lying post! BO was in the WH less than 100 days and the tea parties consisting of a cross section of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents demonstrate that at least half the country are on to this con. He is ruining this country. No way is a 85% approval rating of MO valid.
Even the financial community and state politicians are seeing Obama’s crooked ways with his tarp money and funneling money to Acorn and the unions.

I find that 85% figure a little suspicious just as the high approval he supposedly has. Although, I must say that my jaws continue to drop whenever I see her these days. They certainly have cleaned her up well, and they don’t allow her to say much either, lest we hear about how proud of all of us she suddenly is now that she has reached adulthood.
It is amazing what a team of professional stylists and image consultants can do for a person. They definitely are an award-winning team. Yeah, and wonder who came up with that garden idea . . ., oh, and putting her on sesame street. They have taken June Cleaver, Jackie O and Princess Di and rolled them up in Michele’s arms and ta da . . . America’s newest Sweetheart!

Puke, the praise showered on Mrs. Obama for being a mother while having grandma babysit, social secretaries, cooks, make-up artists, hairstylists and free clothes given to her making her job much easier is unbelievable. Heck, with that much support staff I could make time to hit the gym too.
Although grandma babysitting hasn’t worked out that well. Seems her social schedule has been so busy since moving into the people’s house that they have ended up hiring babysitters to keep the kids while she takes the limo out. She is not a “rocking chair grandma.”

Un - believable. These people are to be pitied when they worship m. obama’s arms - because they know they have nothing, nothing, so they concentrate on her arms. You/’d have muscular arms too - if you had to haul that big horse’s a____s out of a chair or a bed every day. Can you imagine if it was Palin, who was vice president - would they be talking about her perfect WHOLE body? Naw. They would ignore that and attack her defenseless baby and her for having the audacity to keep it and raise it. And if it was Hillary - all we’d be hearing about is her thighs and ankles, and people you know it’s true.
