About That Whitey Tape

Since an attention-starved “journalist” named David Wiegel wote an article Saturday that memorializes my post a year ago on the so-called “whitey tape” — purported to show Michelle Obama using the term “whitey” — I’ve decided to re-post the two articles I wrote last year to refute any and all rumors. (See more articles posted today, via Memeorandum.com.) Why was the tape never revealed and used? One theory is that the hardline conservatives in possession of the tape did not want John McCain to win, a plausible theory given the hard right’s reluctance in general to aid McCain’s campaign. So, without further ado, here are my articles written last year, in full, and with links to the original posts and comments:

I learned over the weekend why the Republicans who have seen the tape of Michelle Obama ranting about “whitey” describe it as “STUNNING.” I have not seen it but I have heard from five separate sources who have spoken directly with people who have seen the tape. It features Michelle Obama and Louis Farrakhan. They are sitting on a panel at Jeremiah Wright’s Church when Michelle makes her intemperate remarks. Whoops!! When that image comes out it will enter the politcal ads hall of fame. It will be right up there with the little girl plucking daisy petals in the famous 1964 ad LBJ used against Barry Goldwater.
That ain’t a “lie” Barky. It is a fact. Of course, most Barack supporters have trouble grasping this concept. Maybe that’s why they support Barack–does not require much intellectual effort. Simply close eyes and hold your nose.

The recording that shows Michelle Obama saying disparaging things about white folks is for real. It is not part of some elaborate dirty trick. The people who have seen her comments describe it as “stunning” or “devastating.” I have not spoken directly with the people who have seen the tape, but I have spoken to two of my friends who are friends with those who watched the tape/dvd.
Are they playing me? No, but it is a valid question to ask. Two of my sources, who have recounted the reactions of their friends who have seen the Michelle “performance,” live on opposite sides of the United States geographically and politically. They do not know each other and had no way of knowing that each of them was talking to me. This is one reason I believe the report of the “tape” is true.
I also have learned that Obama campaign knew about this “tape” at least two weeks prior to my first blog item on the matter. And they are not laughing it off as a joke. (Note to Barack: There are leaks in your campaign.) Ben Smith’s report on the matter only tells part of the story.
The woman from McClatchy who dared ask the question was verbally assaulted by Obama aides. She was treated as if she had made a death threat.
Then there is the matter of the email/disinformation campaign the Obama folks are trying. First they sent some of their bloggers an email claiming that Michelle said “WHY DID HE” rather than use the pejorative, “WHITEY.” And now the excuse is being circulated that somehow I, or someone else, is cribbing from some silly book I have never heard of until now. A campaign does not react this way to a fabrication.
I apologize for any confusion generated from our effort to get on top of this. We made the mistake of putting up the claims from Hillbuzz, but have no way of verifying Hillbuzz’s claim that it is a recording that features Michelle Obama with the wife of Louis Farrakhan. That is not what the sources who have seen the “tape” have reported to me.
The sources who have seen the tape report that Michelle says disparaging things about “whites” and that Louis Farrakhan is visible. There is no identifying information on the segment they have seen to identify the location or time when this was recorded.
Why does this “tape” of Michelle Obama matter? The folks who have it are working to elect John McCain. They are using it now to raise money for a 527 effort that will attack Barack Obama. I am told that they fully intend to keep this “off-the-market” until after the Democratic Convention. The Republicans involved with this believe that Barack Obama is a more beatable candidate than Hillary Clinton and see the tape as reinforcing an image of racial division that will hurt Obama.
I support Hillary Clinton for President. I believe she will be a stronger candidate. And if I had the tape I would put it out in a heartbeat. Getting the tape out now does one of two things–either it persuades Super Delegates that Barack is not electable or it gives the Obama campaign time to repair the damage.
I now appreciate somewhat how Cofer Black, the head of the CIA’s Counter Terrorism Center, must have felt as he tried to warn Condaleeza Rice and the Bush White House about a brewing terrorist attack in the days leading up to September 11th. And please, I am not equating the Michelle tape with the attacks of 9-11. Rather I am focused on the point of what happens when someone has incomplete information, which warns about a future event, and tries to raise the alert. Just because Cofer Black could not say in late July 2001 that the coming attack would be carried out by 19 hijackers on four commercial airliners did not mean his intelligence was wrong.
Those who want to vilify me for having the audacity to raise this warning can have at it. I ran up against similar attacks and skeptics in May of 2003 when I warned that the Bush Administration had cooked the intelligence on Iraq. It is only now that we get a Senate Intelligence Committee Report and a book from Scott McClellan confirming what I said five years ago.
I caught more heat in October of 2003 when I defended Valerie Plame as an undercover CIA officer. Again, we had to wait until the trial of Scooter Libby to learn that the claims she was just a glorified secretary were lies. And once again Scott McClellan, Bush’s former Press Secretary, confirms that he was lied to as well about Valerie’s status and who was involved in spreading her name around town.
My efforts on those two issues earned me the enmity of many on the political right. On at least two separate occasions the Wall Street Journal editorial page attacked me by name and accused me of being part of a CIA effort to sabotage the policies of President Bush. Those charges were repeated and amplified in a subsequent book by Kenneth Timmerman,

Now it is some on the left who are attacking me and behaving in the same manner as those who rejected my reports on Iraq and Valerie Plame. Now I am a Republican tool. Here’s a small, but representative sample of the “love” letters coming my way:

Really? If that’s the case, where’s the video? You and I know that if such a video exists it would have appeared on YouTube by now. Now for the shocker. If the election comes down to a choice between John McCain and Barack Obama I will vote for Bob Barr. I live in Maryland and my state is very likely to vote overwhelmingly for Barack. I continue to believe that Barack is not qualified by experience or temperament to be President. I will be happy to be proved wrong on that count. But, if elected, he is likely to revive memories of the failed Presidency of Jimmy Carter. How apropos that Jimmy endorsed Barack.
And I cannot support John McCain, who is staffing his national security team with many of the bozos who were instrumental in bringing us the debacle in Iraq. Of particular concern is Randy Scheunemann. A confidant of Douglas Feith, Scheunemann represents a continuation of the disastrous Bush policies in the Middle East. I’ll devote more time later to these issues.
Let me conclude with this–I think there is at least one tape/recording that will be released sometime after the August convention and is likely to be very damaging to the Barack Obama presidential campaign. While I hope that Super Delegates wake up and realize that Hillary is their best shot for victory in the fall, I realize I am swimming upstream. So word to Barrack and team–the tape is coming at some point and you folks better be ready to deal with it because, unlike the situations with Jeremiah Wright and Michael Pfleger, you cannot divorce your wife in the middle of a campaign.

No, Buzz, not that I like them coming enmasse, but I think it’s a good early warning system. We can read them as a signal that we’re on track about something, as they feel their job is to distract us. We can very easily ignore the nasty, one-jab, hit-and-runs they do, and instead look at the bigger picture - that periodically they do come enmasse - and our job is to look past their silly jabs or protestations to what in the bigger picture we are getting close to.

I’ve always believed that the bots fell in love with Obama, not for causes (because even in the primaries he showed his flip-flopping self), but because he made them feel good about themselves.
Now, if they were to actually critically analyze The One, they wouldn’t just be losing their “hero”, they’d be losing their recently propped up self-esteem and self-identity. If The One isn’t real, then they’re left back with their deflated selves, not knowing who they are or where they’re going.

Lorac, the UK Telegraph extended that to the broad American public saying that Americans elected Obama because they wanted to feel good about themselves.
Being a Canadian/American Hybrid, it seems as good a reason as any. I’ve often felt that Americans beat themselves up more than any other people and the accusation of racism has been used as a weapon in the U.S. for so long that I think people wanted to put it to bed once and for all.
That won’t happen, but I think that was the intention of a lot of voters.

We may be seeing a political campaign defensive play developing here and elsewhere.
The WaPo and others just released stories about how brave and pragmatic zero is for doing what is right, instead of what is politically popular. Since so many papers, including the LA Times came out with exactly the same type of story tonight it seems the WH is feeding a line that should have read: “Obama lied to his supporters just to get elected.”
But the media companies that have been lead to the kook aide stream with the promise of full page ads for military recruiting and paid PSAs on the air may not be drinking as much as they were.
If the bots are twitching it may be due to something we saw last week. The chinks are starting to show in the Teflon coating. The media honestly questioned Obama’s 17 billion dollar budget cut and almost said that his “cuts” were a decoy to distract attention from the red ink. They had to say that. They would have lost too many more subscribers if they just continued to make their front pages an Obama poster.
Since their papers were not deemed a national security risk and taken over by the government the publishers may be thinking that writing some truth and keeping their heads can actually both happen, no matter how thuggish the administration acts. The song, A Little Good News Today, was a fantasy and most investigative reporters like blood. The bots have to be deployed now to debunk all criticism by wedding any legitimate critique the mass media may offer to tin foil sideline stories.
The MSM checks blogs for interesting angles and reader responses. If I worked for Obama I would suggest that everything be done to disrupt and destroy the reputation of any critical blog and that ad revenues be diverted, by Obama supporters, to hopey-dopey sites.
We are not being governed by people experienced or skilled in governing. These guys are amateur administrators. However, this DC gang is a group of professional campaigners who are convinced that, in order to assure eight years of skimming profits from foreign and domestic funding projects, all they have to do is keep the campaign going.

Jimmy, my boy, I am going to add to your frustration. Last summer I met with one of the people who has a copy of THE TAPE. He said it was nothing big. MO said the word Whitey in a “those F***ers” tone of voice. That’s all. You don’t need to see it. It would just cause you hours of pain trying to justify her statement based on her audience of friends around the table and the frustration of being the only one in the room that had a multi-million dollar future. You do need to go to bed though. And don’t forget to brush your teeth darlin’.

As far as the Whitey Tape, it doesn’t matter if it exists or not. There’s plenty of other examples showcasing Michelle’s attitude during her Princeton years and since.
If what you say is true (I’m not doubting that) then the GOP was wise not to run with it.

I read this earlier and thought this guy is a twit, not worth the time it would take to type a response. He just took was written and twisted it to his own liking. Then several others followed suit without even bother to check if what they were writing were the facts.
Monkey see, monkey do. Take a look at some of the comments. They didn’t even bother to check the facts or the facts they were trying to promote. You didn’t even need to address this Larry, anyone that checks NQ knows we are a mixed group of Democrats, Republicans and Independents. Anyone that bothers to check their links can see they twisted the truth.
People that twist the truth/facts like they do live in an alternate reality. Those that believe the lies live there with them. Nothing you say or do will bring them back to Earth.

I think Obama supporters need to quit asking LJ for the tape. He has repeated said he does not have it and has not seen it. Larry admitted in his original posts he found out what was on the tape 3rd and 4th hand. The rest of his posts were conjecture based on his assumption the tape existed (of course LJ wanted them to exist for Hillary’s sake).
But to me, it’s a non-issue. Since the tape has never surfaced, the tape does not exist. The only thing I would fault LJ for is he should have demanded to see the tape himself before he decided to publish. But hey whatever…it’s a blog, not the New England Journal of Medicine.
It does stand to reason that if the tape actually existed, it would have come out before the election. It is ludicrous to think the Repubs would sit on it until 2012! Twelve months ago, she was seen as the angry black south-sider with a chip on her shoulder. Now the country has gotten to know and is becoming comfortable with Michelle as a First Lady, a mother, etc.

Perhaps the tape does not exist [LJ was clear from the beginning that he never had the tape, hadn't seen the tape, and was reporting from "source" about it, so shut up, Bots!] because one would think that Republicans would have leaked it during the campaign; since it never was shown, one can question whether or not it really exists.
Conversely though, without proof of existence, there is actually no evidence that Barack Obama’s birth certificate exists either.
I’m not necessarily advocating either argument; I’m just pointing out the fallacy in your logic about it.
Just because we haven’t seen it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
We have ’seen’ BO say, on his “Fight the Smears” web site, that the COLB he posted establishes he is a “native” citizen. We know that in 1961, Hawaiian Revised Statutes §338-17.8, Certificates for children born out of State, provided that the director of health may issue a Hawaiian Birth Certificate even for a child born outside of the United States, just as long as the child’s parents declared the State of Hawaii was their legal residence for at least one year immediately preceding the birth of that child. In other words, possessing a Hawaiian Certification of Live Birth for a birth alleged to have occurred in HI in 1961 does not prove that child was actually born in HI.
In other words, even assuming the photocopied document on “Fight the Smears” is real, it fails to prove what BO alleges it proves, namely, that he is a native American.

Assuming the tape actually exists and is in Republican hands, as Larry reported he had heard from friends he considers reliable, I can easily think of one over-riding reason the tape was not used in 2008: John McCain said “NO WAY!”
John McCain took some racially-motivated cheap shots from the Bush campaign in 2000 during the Republican primaries. Because McCain has an adopted daughter from Bangladesh who is very dark-skinned, Bush operatives conducted a push poll insinuating that the girl was John’s illegitimate biological daughter. McCain made it clear early in the campaign that he would neither use nor tolerate racially motivated campaign tactics. That is why the tape was not used, in my opinion.
As for the statement that the country is now comfortable with Michelle Obama, I guess implying that it’s too late to damage her image, I encourage you to think back, if you’re old enough, to 1993, when the country adored Hillary Clinton. Women were getting their hair done like Hillary’s, naming their daughters Hillary, and cheering her for using her maiden name as a middle name. She was so popular that even in the Congressional hearings on the health care proposal the Clintons put forth, Republican Congressional leaders were flattering her on her intelligence and demeanor.
Within months, Hillary had been accused of complicity in Vince Foster’s suicide, investigated for personnel changes in the White House travel offices, investigated for years over their Whitewater investments and other investments that paid off well, and generally came after her tooth and nail, starting within a year of the Clintons moving into the White House.
Why did they wait to attack her? Why not do it immediately? Because they knew that the Clintons were in the “honeymoon period” with Americans, and to attack her immediately would have looked like they couldn’t get over losing the White House and the attacks would have looked even more partisan than they did. They waited until the dust settled after the election, hoping to beat the Clintons in 1996 by soiling their reputations in the run-up to re-election.
That’s one plausible reason they may be holding onto “the tape” or any other negative stuff that wasn’t used in 2008 (not used under order of McCain).

The “whitey tape” remains — and will remain — a blight upon Larry Johnson’s reputation for manifold reasons:
1.) Mr. Johnson vouched for its existence. (“The recording… is for real. It is not part of some elaborate dirty trick.”) And by invoking Iraq and Valerie Plame in the context of the “whitey” rumor, he put his reputation as a former intelligence professional on the line.
2.) Larry vouched for the supposed tape’s existence WITHOUT EVER TALKING TO ANYONE WHO ACTUALLY SAW IT. (“I have spoken to two of my friends who are friends with those who watched the tape/dvd.”)
3.) The “whitey” smear had the stench of disinformation from the start. Larry should’ve proceeded with caution (unless he was a willful accomplice in the attempt to sabotage the Obama campaign).
4.) Larry’s latest speculation as to why the “whitey tape” was never released makes no sense. (The GOP oppo researchers “did not want John McCain to win.” Really? Then why’d they dig up the “tape” in the first place and leak its “contents”?)
5.) In the current partisan miasma of D.C., with the hard right opposing President Obama on everything from taxes to torture, the ideal moment to drop such a bomb is now… when it would presumably cause great embarrassment and political damage to the popular Democrat. It defies credibility that such a tape would be in Republican hands and NEVER BE DEPLOYED. Hence, it was always bullshit… and Larry Johnson owes his readers better than to keep defending his actions as he has done tonight.
For instance, he could name the names of those who claimed to have seen this “stunning” video in the first place.

Apparently, as evidenced by all the bot traffic lately, the White House would be best served by letting the tape be released now. They still have many koolaid paid Botheads that will spin and twist it all into how the comment made MEchelle so tense that she clenches her fists daily over it and that is how she got those great arms she bares (bears) and how far she has come since then and how she raised awareness that day on race relations! The tape does exist and it is being held back in order to influence and control Obama. If he steps out of line and moves against the International Political Oligarchy,(Bankers, Monied Interests and Families) that is tightening its grip on our beloved country, it will be released. This same group moved against Hillary after Bill got a little power hungry and greedy through his actions with the Cilnton Foundation. (I’m not judging him for these actions but they clearly presented and alternative for international action that older institutions resented and quietly fought against behind the scenes.) Obama will be thrown under the bus when and if he stops pursuing his masters agenda.
I wonder how many things are held back for blackmail purposes since there was absolutely no vetting from the media or any other body (incl. the Repubs).
