Obama Held Hostage by Cheney on National Security, Says MoDo
By Ani on May 20, 2009 at 7:00 PM in Barack Obama, CIA, DNC idiocy, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, New York Times, Obama's Broken Promises
Lord knows I miss no opportunity to take Maureen Dowd to task for her near criminal Hillary bashing, but today her column is a scathing satire entitled “Cheney’s Third Term” which depicts the former Vice President and Don Rumsfeld sharing a fancy Washington dinner while gamely bragging they are controlling President Obama on national security. Hmmm. Here are a few excerpts:
…It isn’t so much that Dick and Rummy are back. It’s that they never left.
They had no intention of turning America’s national security over to the Boy Wonder. The two best infighters in Washington history weren’t yielding turf to a bunch of peach-fuzz pinkos who side with terrorists.
Let W. work out at the S.M.U. gym in Dallas, waiting for history to redeem him; Dick and Rummy are leaning forward into history, as they always do. Cheney is tawny with TV makeup; there’s no point taking it off. The gigs are nonstop, and he has a big Obama-bashing speech Thursday at the American Enterprise Institute.
…“That was funny when you were on Fox and Neil Cavuto called you Obama’s ‘ball and Cheney,’ ” Rummy grins, taking a gulp of his brunello.
“The punks thought they could roll over us,” Vice mutters. “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”
… “I can’t believe how easy it was to bring Obama into line,” Rummy says, gnawing on Gorgonzola. “We wouldn’t have needed waterboarding if everybody cracked like a peanut. It was even easier than getting the bit into Junior’s mouth. Way simpler than if we’d had to contend with McCain. In the end, the right guy won.”
…“You’re running national security now and everyone knows it,” Rummy says. “You got Obama to do an about-face on the torture photos. He’s using our old line about how it would endanger the troops. He’s keeping our military tribunals. His Justice Department invoked our state secrets privilege to try to get that lawsuit on torture and rendition dismissed. He’s trying to stop any sort of truth commission, thank goodness. He’s got his own surge going in Afghanistan. He’s withdrawing from Iraq more slowly. He’s extended our secret incursions over the Afghan border into Pakistan.”
“Transparency bites,” [Cheney] snarls.
…”Well,” Dick says. “He’s got to keep Gitmo open. It’s rich that his own party won’t give him the money to close it. The NIMBY factor works every time — no terrorists in my backyard. He’s got to stop this pansy diplomacy with Muslim nations. He’s got to let Bibi take out those Iranian centrifuges. He’s got to stop his Kodak moments and Commie book club with Hugo Chávez. He’s got to release those C.I.A. memos proving that we were right to rip up the Constitution. And, of course, he’s got to pardon Scooter.”
“Can we get him to do all that, Dick?”
Dick twinkles. “Yes, we can.”
But here’s my point, Maureen. While you’re making a funny about Obama looking like GWB’s third term, which most everybody here predicted he would, do you really think Cheney would be able to do this to Hillary Clinton or John McCain if either of them were occupying the Oval Office right now? Are you intimating that our current President doesn’t have enough of a spine? What’s wrong, Maureen, are you running out of people to snark so now you have to take on “Obambi”?
MoDo, still happy you backed the “Boy Wonder,” as you call him, with such a vengeance?
Inquiring minds want to know.

O.M.G….i think they are coming out of their stupor….lol.
I have so much contempt for Maureen Dowd that it was difficult to read this. Despite her depiction of Obama as a pushover, she doesn’t attribute his flip-flopping to his own flawed character or poor advisors — NO,it’s gotta be Dick Cheney! It’s still open season on Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc. Going after them for what they do, did, or say is fine — going after them for what Obama does just makes me want to puke. Obama is revealing his own weaknesses and flawed thinking and I would love to see the press address that — instead of having to create linkage to the reviled Bush administration. IMO, Dowd can’t go after Obama head-on, no matter what he does, so she quickly diverts all criticism from Obama to those evil men from the former administration. Not funny. GO AFTER OBAMA FOR WHAT HE DOES OR DOESN’T DO. Each administration should have to answer for what goes on during their tenure. After reading this post, MoDo still makes me sick.
Texas Mirth: were you laughin’ when Bush and Cheney and all the media for the last 8 years blamed EVERYTHING on Bill Clinton? Not really fun, is it? The propaganda press and the partisan crap.
tek- I don’t appreciate any form of the Kansas City Shuffle. I’m from Harry Truman territory — and I believe that whoever is in power, should man-up (or woman-up) and say: “The buck stops here.” As I have stated on NO QUARTER many times, I was a Democrat for years — so, your partisan jab may make you feel clever, but aside from that, it’s a worthless comment. I take no satisfaction in hearing anyone blame someone else for their own actions. In fact, whenever I hear that kind of “crap,” to borrow your term, I lose respect for the speaker.
gee tek, if you spent more time addressing the issues raised on here rather than worrying ALL THE TIME what other bloggers write, i’d bet you enjoy this more.
Which blog did Mo Do plagiarize for this gem?
Oh, she just accidentally stole if from a friend, like her blogger plagiarizing.
thanks, ani-funnest MoDo stuff I’ve seen.
boy wonder indeed.
Nothing really funny about Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. The wonder is that anyone in the world would pay any attention to him.
I doubt Obama is soft on terrorism Stupid, but not soft.
And Cheney never had a clue about domestic terrorism.
yall are going to get a kick out of this – this is the beginning of the end of the MSM – “OTV”
this is the first installment of government TV – “OTV”
the White house OTV logo is priceless…. you ahve to get that up… watch the video
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/05/do-you-want-you.html
Note that actual reporters were not allowed access – only White House TV – with their own stupid logo like they’re CBS
scary, scary stuff
Yes, this is scary—government controlled TV—but it sounds like the fawning MSM is getting their just desserts, so it’s also pretty funny. If they had done their job as the 4th estate during the primaries and vetting BHO and his Chicago-style politics, they probably would not be experiencing this exclusion. Maybe they are finally learning how BHO uses people once he gets what he wants and then tosses them aside. Once again, karma is a b*tch.
Obama wants “preventive” detention to imprison people without having to charge them with any crime. It’s called “dictatorship.”

MoDo is awful as we know, but er…Cheney is simply setting the stage for when we are attacked again [bound to happen at some point?] and set the GOP up for blaming the Democrats and of course Obama for being weak on terrorism and nat’l security.
This is clearly Cheney’s strategy. Would they have done this to Hillary? Yes…but differently and probably worse. She was and is my absolute choice as President, but GOP/Cheney are trying to set the stage for FEAR and Fearmongering hoping to give it future raction.
BTW, MoDo cannot control herself and given her style, she’s out of work unless she can spew. As for the CIA does any grownup er, really think they haven’t been masters at lying repeatedly?
As for Obama he’s already shown weakness and strength, but we’ll have to see what he is or isn’t capable of.
He gutted port security, he stopped allowing pilots to carry guns to secure the cockpit, he’s BEGGING for an attack.
Funny Ani. Remorse aplenty. In this matter there would be a tremendously different scenario today were Hillary president. I’m confident how she would have handled Cheney, just look to her recent Congressional appearances. I’m not exactly sure what McCain would be doing, but I don’t really believe it would be “McSame” as was so annoyingly rammed down our throats. My guess is that Cheney would be fishing and hunting, trying to enjoy his retirement. Surely Halliburton or Blackwater would keep Cheney out of politics were McCain president. But there is a pattern, remember how MoDo pushed for Bush over Gore? You’d think she might recognize she sucks. Obama has chosen to be Bush 3, it’s obvious from his statements when interviewed by the Reno Gazette Journal during the Nevada caucuses.
MoDo is guilty of the same cognitive dissonance as someone like Andrew Sullivan. He lurved Bush until he hated him. Then he said Hillary engaged his “Cootie factor” and that he could not stand her. He trumpeted Obama and now Sullivan’s head is, once again, exploding because he now sees that Pr. Obama cares not a whit about the GLBT agenda.
Either these two and others are possessed of the world’s worst judgment, or worse, don’t even believe what they are saying. They just try to stay au courant and ahead of the curve and push the popular koolaid so they can sell copy and stay employed. Conscience, common sense and good judgment doesn’t seem to much enter into it.
“Obama OKs Arab Nuke Deal”
U.S. to help United Arab Emirates become first Arab nation with nuclear power, despite human rights record.

I have vague memories of a quick snippit being posted of a list of all the Republicans that donated to Obama’s campaign and Cheney was one of them. It wasn’t talked about much with the fast pace of the news and goings on all the time. Small wonder.
If Hillary or McCain were president we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
Cheney is warning us…
When you kowtow to dictators, tell the enemy when you are withdrawing from Iraq and tell Iran that you won’t attack them even if they acquire nukes..
When you have a movement that actively wants to humiliate and destroy American power you get
Cheney the truthteller…Ha ha!
All I can do is laugh…
He is a disciple of Alinsky. He will never stick his neck out for anything, never commit before he takes a poll and never do anything that could decrease his popularity. He is about gaining and keeping power, not so much in using it for either good or bad… just possessing it.
I still believe that Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and their friends are the ones who choose and groomed Obama for the Presidency. I do believe they think they own, not just this country, but the entire world. Obama is not being held hostage by anyone; he is a puppet and always has been. As talented a writer as Ms Dowd is, she is an idiot if she believes Obama is being held hostage. By the way, the skies where I live were full of contrails today. That is a bad sign. Stay out of Iran, Bibi. You don’t own the world either.
Yes, BUT…Nanny nanny boo boo to the O!
It tastes pretty sweet, to hear him called Cheney.
The POTUS is probably just following the money, and that doesn’t add up to CHANGE. He obviously can be bought.
Let’s not be hasty Maureen probably ended up on an anti Obama blog this might not be an epiphany she’s probably just playerizing an article she hadn’t read.
modo will be against obama after she is for him after she is against him. it is a revolving door with this woman.
Rarely do I read MoDo anymore. But, I wonder if she realizes she’s being held hostage by her own stupidity.
Exactly. Her writing has gone from bad to worse to atrocious.
it will be interesting to see when the media falls out of love with obama like they did bush. it will happen. children are only attracked just so long to bright shiny things. then they like to destroy them.
