But, but, but she …
By Linda Anselmi on June 12, 2009 at 12:31 PM in Current Affairs, Linda Anselmi, Media Handling of Story, Misogyny, Morning Joe
Strange how it continues to happen, time after time. He does bad (American Girl in Italy has a great piece with videos here), but the guns turn on her, because she’s fair game.
Yes, it’s all her fault.
Not only is the media actively working overtime to shrug off, ignore or try to explain away his verbal attacks on a young girl, but then they turn all their outraged disapproval on the girl’s Mother. Because some how, some way she’s responsible.
Watch the videos below and see pm317’s excellent article and video here. Does any one in the media take him to the woodshed? Does anyone directly hold him to account for verbally denigrating a young girl not once, but twice on a pre recorded national television show. And he did it not just one night, but two nights in a row. And then on a third night he continues the attacks by joking them off “as in questionable taste.” And all the media can muster against him is a half hearted finger wag - if that.
But oh, the Mother. Yes, that woman. She’s the cause. She gets their blood boiling. They’ve got plenty to say about her.
But I can’t help wondering why? What really and truly is this Mother’s great sin? Joe Scarborough tried to ask that on his show this morning, but some how all those guns just had to swing back around and point at the Mother. So I’m left with the only person I’ve come across who is willing to address this question - Kathleen Parker, Washington Post Writers Group Columnist, in her June 10 article Will Sarah Palin’s Undisciplined Operation Cost Her?
Washington, D.C.: I would like you to address what it is about Gov. Palin that incites such vehement hatred in the left. Sarah Silverman had a “comedy” routine about Palin being raped by black gangsters; David Letterman calls her a slut and “jokes” about her 14-year-old daughter becoming pregnant by a baseball player. All of this is greeted with yuks by so-called liberals. I can just imagine the umbrage if somebody substituted “Michelle Obama” for Sarah Palin’s name or “Sasha Obama” for Willow’s. And let’s not even discuss the loathsome comments about her that you can find on this very newpaper’s web site. To me, Palin’s disorganized staff and her feuds with GOP staffers aren’t the issues; it’s the hatred she brings out in otherwise reasonably sane people. Your thoughts?
Kathleen Parker: I may not be much help here because I don’t get it either. Then again, I don’t get the hatred directed at me from the right when I criticize Palin. It’s a pretty nasty world out there.
Nah, “it goes with the territory” is an excuse. Not a reason.
Re: Letterman: Listen, Letterman is a comedian. Comedians that don’t go over the line are not funny. If you said she looks slutty, that’s over the line. If I say it, it’s over the line. Why wouldn’t Letterman say it - have you been on a plane?
What? It’s his job? So it’s a comedian’s job is to verbally attack 14 year old girls? Let’s try again.
Kathleen Parker: I don’t have a problem with raunchy humor, but time and place are everything. In a nightclub, fine. But Letterman is sort of an American institution. It just seems to me that when a woman is running for public office, we should avoid sexualizing her.
Okay, I censored myself before so I’ll say it now. I also think it’s out of line for a woman to sexualize her candidacy, which Palin did. Just ask Rich Lowry, who wrote that he had to sit up a little straighter when she winked during the vp debate. So, maybe when you play the flirt and invite males to see starbursts bouncing off the walls (Lowry again), then maybe you invite the sexual punchline. I’m wobbling here.
So there it is. The daughter is fair game, because the Mother has a wink that can make a man see starbursts. Get that, it’s all about “the wink.” Wow.
No misogyny there. Nope. None.
The feminist media can stand proud and tall.
Yes, we’ve come a long way baby!
But just for the record Letterman, in a just world, you would (and should) have been fired the first night you uttered those words against a 14 year old girl.

Every day in America, 17- and 18-year old girls in a steady relationship – with hormones (they can barely comprehend) raging – engage in sexual activities with their boyfriends.
Every day in America, a few hundred (or thousand) lose the roll of the dice and become pregnant.
Some families, confronted with a daughter’s undesired pregnancy, opt for an abortion.
Other families, although equally anguished, do not believe in abortion for religious or moral reasons and opt to let the pregnancy continue.
Some families give the baby up for adoption, others cannot bear to part with their own family member and opt to keep and raise it.
In those cases, a heavy burden falls on the girl who is now still a teen-ager, with all the desire to be free to have fun that most teenagers have. But they soon learn that is all over for them and it is now time to take care of the baby 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
What might seem “adult” and/or somewhat glamorous to other teens – having a baby of one’s own – is anything but. It is hard work and long hours. Oh yes, there is the joy of the darling baby, but it is still long hours and hard work.
I can imagine how difficult it must be to be that young, not married, not even planning to marry any time soon, but trapped by biology.
You see, the young man who did the impregnating is still foot loose and fancy free to go on with his life, untouched by the scandal and unburdened by the responsibility of caring for the baby all day every day.
Bristol Palin has had the frightening experience of having a sexual encounter result in the birth of a baby; she clearly loves the child dearly but is also painfully aware that it is hard work and not glamorous. So, she has set a task for herself that is to be admired: she is using her experience to talk to other teen girls and alert them to the possible consequences of engaging in sex. She is telling them that the only safe way to avoid a pregnancy is to avoid engaging in intercourse.
I applaud her efforts. Her life has been permanently altered by this pregnancy. She is urging other young women and girls to think hard about their choices when it comes to sex and relationships. As a woman, I am very familiar with the pressure put on young girls to “prove” their love for their partner. Bristol Palin is trying to open the eyes of girls to the possible price they may have to pay for “proving” their love for their male partner by engaging in intercourse.
That is hardly something to condemn Bristol Palin for doing … nor should it be cause to make her the butt of tasteless jokes by dirty old men, who tell their jokes to get rich and famous without any concern for those whom they have ridiculed mercilessly.
At this moment in time, the best thing David Letterman could do for humanity would be to devote one entire show to hosting a serious discussion of teenage pregnancy and how it affects the lives of those caught in an unplanned-for teenage pregnancy.
In any contest, right now, between Bristol Palin and David Letterman as to which one is trying harder to do a good thing, Bristol wins hands down.
lightacandle: exellent comment. Letterman should be booted out of comedy and all show business. What a brute. His child was born out of wedlock, because he just didn’t want to get married. I imagine if anyone had dissed his girlfriend, he would have sued them. But here’s what I think, Mrs. Letterman is a golddigging slut who got pregnant for Letterman’s money. Take that, Davie.
no, now that would be the truth
that he already knows
you’ve got to hit him with another DIRTY DOG LIE!!
like -
tek
Why are you saying this? I am deeply offended…
Of course, Mrs. Letterman MUST be a ‘golddigging slut’ after this sickening pedo-perv’s money. Why else would a decent fair-minded woman marry a creep like Letterman? Let’s hope Lettercrap stays away from any girl-relatives in his custody. He should be restrained from having any young girls on his program.
As for MAHER I couldn’t believe the above video. He is more sick and in need of Rehab than anyone! What a pedophile rapist-jerk!
Lightacandle
Your post should be read aloud by Letterman!Great!
The “wink” in reference, was for her father, sitting in the audience.
Thanks for the clarification. I have never read about that Carol Burnett type explanation before.
If you think those are bad, wait till you see THIS VIDEO!! I am PISSSSSSSSSSSED.
WARNING: Keith Olbermann alert
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/31275917#31275917
These two videos are pissing me off, too! I am SO sick of these hacks attacking her.
This is a great article:
http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/feature/2009/06/12/letterman_palin/index.html
And according to all these liberal Letterman apologists the Obama daughters are FAIR GAME because they were also *paraded out* during the convention. And gave interviews.
And way to go Mika!
Sorry, I had hope there for a while, but in the end I can’t give Mika a passing grade. She defended Palin as a mother, wrung her hands a few times over the Letterman jokes, then joined right in with the rest bashing Palin as a political figure. Which allowed everyone to divert from the real issue of what Letterman said and how the media was handling it.
yes, I wrote that before the end of the video… i had hopes, but she caved in the end.
Both of them Olbermann and Letterman are both “P”ing me off. I can’t stand Kathleen Parker she goes whichever way the wind blows to get her 15 seconds of fame. Talk about a jealous woman.
Read some of her articles on Sarah. It’s not criticism. They’re catty, jealous, pathetic high school girl attacks. The same as they were against Hillary. Women are their own worse enemies at times by giving these creeps, both the male and female, the time of the day. It’s OK to attack someone they don’t like, till it happens to them, then it’s never OK.
Any woman that doesn’t understand or realize, takes for granted the struggles women have gone through to get us to where we are today…
It was not that long ago that women were not allowed to vote. It was not so long ago. In fact since my time on this planet, there was no such thing as spousal rape, it was your duty. It was not that long ago. In fact less than 30 years ago that your husband had every right to knock you around. It was not so long ago, less than 30 years ago that women were dying because there was no safe birth control, so they were preforming abortion on themselves.
They need to dig their damn heads out of the sand because at the rate they’re going, they’re telling men that they’re more than happy to go right back to those not so long agos.
Well then I think Michelle Obama should be fair game since she gave interviews and was paraded out by her husband on the campaign trail and in fact gave a few speeches for him. But as Obama said after the brouhaha over Michelles “now I’m finally proud of my country comment”, that families should be off limit. Yah right, only Democratic families are off limits. He never did specifically scold anyone in the media for their insults and lies about his opponents VP candidate or her family.
I’m waiting for Letterman to slam little Piper Palin. What is she like 8 years old? She gave an interview once so let the jokes start. Might as well include one about Trig too since he was paraded out by his mother so therefore is fair game also.
SarainItaly, nice links and Olberman is a pig and Carlson is a sow. The Salon article quoting
“Slutty flight attendant”
Isn’t there a flight attendant union that should be pissed.
I think it would be more gender accurate to call Olbermann a “boar” if you’re going to call Carlson a “sow”. But if we’re using barnyard parlance, I would describe them both as asses, and full of bullshit.
Nice one
My thoughts exactly, Animal Control. Nothing like slamming a profession which has given many women a career and independence. Also, I’d like to see what Alex Rodriguez and Spitzer have to say about their defamation of character by Lecherman. I guess they are now rapists and pedophiles.
Oh bless baby Trig
That really was not Sarah’s baby but the msm shouted he was brought into the world by her daughter Bristol….
This alone is mind boggling that anyone would even suggest this crazy analogy.
and yet these shows still have the lights on each day.
Simply mind blowing to say the least.
Any words that imply criminal conduct is Slander per se (damages need not be proven)
Sara,
I too am beyond disgusted and angry. For those of you who want to proactively do SOMETHING here is a simple way.
Nielsen Media Research Corporate Headquarters (TV Ratings and Shopping) is located at
770 Broadway
# 8th
New York, NY 10003
The May 2009 sweeps predicated how much each advertiser is willing to pay for Media Advertising.
Since 2000, Nielsen has installed “People Meeter” boxes on TV’s and given homes little hand scanners to read the bar code of their groceries. Each household represents 60-90 THOUSAND adults depending on household composition and size. These numbers are then extrapolated into millions of people in the ratings you see in the Newspapers.
These numbers are SOLD for BIG BUCKS to Advertising firms and their clients by Nielsen. In fact, their entire New York City operation was set up in 2005 for the sole purpose of Corporate managing their now International as well as domestic operations, and to be close the the major Marketing Firms which proliferate in New York City.
The actual work on collecting statistics, and finding homes to participate is done by the Operations headquarters in Oldsmar, Florida.
You also need to know that Nielsen credits shows you DVR, as they are being taped and NOT when you view them. This is true of ALL DVR’s made from 2006 on. IMO they should allow viewing (scanning) for 5 minutes before a show is given credit. Ah well - Another fight for another day.
If you are truly angry and want to specifically target David Letterman and Contessa Brewer and MSNBC’s morning Joe then those with people Meter simply need to block those shows. Those with the hand scanners should stop scanning the products listed over at Hillbuzz blog Just read past the first article for the last 3 days.
http://hillbuzz.org
Those with Meters and scanners, as well as those without then need to write, call or fax Nielsen and inform them that their statistics will be wrong, because their formula for measuring households will be skewed as you and your family (even w/o meters and scanners) are also blocking and not using certain products.
here is the contact info:
Main telephone number 646-654-8300
Susan Whiting CEO and VP - Fax 646-654-9576
If writing or faxing make sure you copy the following people:
Kirk Miller CFO
Bob Forsell CEO - Shares responsibility w/ Susan Whiting
Joanne Wheatly - VP Audience Marketing - her job is to ensure that raw data is accurately collected and correlated. Her other PRIMARY job is to serve as liaison with Marketing Company’s and their top clients. Her direct number is 646-654-7251
Nielsen’s bread and butter depends on highly reliable statistical accuracy so they will definitely take action. They in turn will certainly let CBS know that their numbers are dropping like stone.
The advertisers who signed up as a result of the May Sweeps numbers, have “wiggle” room in their contracts and if audience share, or shopping numbers drop below a certain level they can pull out.
Those who want to see CBS as an entity hurt and perhaps forced to sell, should participate in the well thought out plan presented at Hillbuzz. http://hillbuzz.org/
Because she is so good and she IS a force that they know if they can’t stop her, she will be a leader in the near future.
Look at her this morning. Smart, intelligent, principled and has integrity. SNAP!
Governor Palin on Today and regardless of Lauers best efforts, she throws it back to him!
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/31304942#31304942
In an eleven minute interview Sarah delivered more substance, with solid credibility, than is contained in all of Obama’s lengthy but pointless orations. THAT is just ONE of the reasons the left continues to ridicule her. Her clarity of thought and ability to communicate those thoughts to “meat and potatoes” Americans is far more terrifying to the left than her actual positions on cotroversial matters. The entire filthy smear campaign has no foundation in a mere debate over idiological differences on the issues, it has simply been the worst, and most shameful ad hominem attack I’ve ever witnessed.
EXACTLY.
Which is why she must be stopped. Just like they went after Hillary. In both cases, no one likes her but regular normal people who come out in droves.
Time to pull out Tina Fey again although by now she must know she is just being used. If she had any integrity she would say that she won’t do Palin again.
As for comedy:
First off - I don’t think Flight Attendants are slutty but maybe I don’t watch the Pornos these others who do think that seem to.
Second - Back in the golden days of comedy those were called “cheap laughs”. The best comedians don’t have to stoop that low. I’m a big fan of Rita Rudner.
correct.
I don’t think Johnny Carson needed to step over the line for a good laugh. Nor, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Jerry Seinfeld. And even political didn’t cross the line like Jackie Mason.
And I really wish I could be on the next plane ride Letterman takes. My cousin I’m sure would find that description interesting. And I bet the males taker greater exception to their new description.
Worse, I pitty the women who are making these many excuses for having such a low opinion of themselves and fellow women. But, have no fear, strong women like Governor Palin and the New Agenda are sticking up for you even if you can’t.
Exactly right about Clinton–they came after her no holds barred because she was tearing Obama up at the debates. Clinton shredded Obama on every issue, dang even my Republican husband was going to vote for Hillary after hearing her debate.
This is standard sexist attack mode: blame the victim, make her the villian, say the woman is over-reacting and/or silly and make endless lame excuses.
The Far Left and Obamatrons are absolutely tone deaf to this stuff. And as far as I’m concerned the whole “new” Democratic Party, my former party, is complicit. They sold their souls last year by turning a blind eye to the sexist campaigns they ran.
This is just a continuation. But here’s the real corker: how can any self-respecting woman not condemn this sort of thing? Some are coming out but I’m appalled by the women willing to sit and nod their heads when male newscasters take the weary track: well, it’s Palin’s fault for parading those girls before the American public. Or, she should be a good sport and go with the flow.
BS! Having a jerk like Letterman make smutty comments about your daughters has nothing to do with comedy, unless, of course, you’re a moronic adolescent.
If anyone mentioned one negative thing about the Obama girls, the press would go nuts. As well they should. But it goes both ways. Sexist language encourages and promotes sexist attitudes, which are obviously alive and well in the US.
It’s disgusting. From a suggestion to taking Hillary Clinton into a closet, where only one walks out, to blowing off the suggestion of raping a young girl is acceptable humor.
The Democratic Party is committing suicide. Can’t say I’ll weep much.
NOW has a statement –a little too late and weak — about Lecherman’s sexist attack on Palin. I guess this useless organization should be called NOT NOW rather than NOW.
Bush winked all the time. Didn’t 0bama wink too on the campaign trail? Anybody with a youtube? I read about him offering a kiss to a Hillary supporter so she would switch. Wasn’t that flirting? But of course women like Parker swooned over 0bama so they didn’t need any special invitation to flirt and sexualize with him. So it is not out of line for him to sexualize himself or others doing it involuntarily but for Palin of course, she was flirting with disaster when she winked at her dad. What a load of bull. With people like Parker and Brewer and the rest of their clan, it is quite an uphill struggle for people like you and me to bring fairness to this debate.
Yep! Time for a Post Feminist uprising.
Obama did far more than wink, he often expressed himself with not-so-subtle obscene gestures and double entendres. But we mustn’t dare question the actions or pronouncements of a half black deity, that would be racist blasphemy.
Don’t forget, he also called a reporter “sweetie” and called Senator Boxer a “cutie”.
And don’t forget that video on the plane where BO was preening and flexing and showing his package to the swooning female reporters.
ewwwww. I’m eating. Did you HAVE to remind us about that one. YUK!
That was his stimulus package.
Some men don’t know how to react to a young, beautiful woman politician other than to sexualize her but of course they have to blame it on her very existence — She made me do it, blame the victim, the harassed, isn’t that classic?
I’m so sick of trying to get Obots to admit that Letterman ws wrong without qualifying it with “but”…
To my surprise, Michael Tomasky of the Guardian, a total Obot, did just that this morning although he did throw in a gratuitious insult about Sarah Palin.
Letterman’s show is recorded several hours before airtime. Plenty of time to get the facts checked and cut out the ‘joke’. This means Letterman knew or should have known exactly who his targets were, which means he left it in intentionally.
If we convict a 15 year old boy as a sex offender for life for reposting his girlfriend’s sexting message, shouldn’t we at least arrest a 62 year old man for publicly advocating the rape of a 14 year old?
And BTW, where’s A-Rod on this? Apparently (according to Letterman) those hot-blooded hispanics have trouble keeping it under control whenever they see 14 year olds parading around at ball games.
If I were in his position I’d have a lawyer on this in a New York minute.
Excellent point CDP! Slander? Defamation of character?
Great points, I was wondering the same about A-Rod.
Could he possibly want his name associated with those criminal comments?
My thoughts exactly. I would love it if A-Rod were to “step up to the plate” (sorry)and say he finds that kind of humor tasteless and wants no part of it. He should demand an apology from Letterman for slandering his character. Anyone know how to get in touch with A-Rod?
Get a TMZ camera crew to stalk him and shout at him until he makes a comment. Would be interesting to see what he would say.
I was wondering if any women would be outside protesting in front of his show or maybe get tickets to his ‘live’ audience and do some shout outs ala Code Pink.
There’s an opportunity here, the Palins shouldn’t be the only ones going on the record against this sick behavior.
Craig: I still cannot believe that idiot made these statements on national televison. Time to yank him off the air.
I wrote this
http://colberturdead2me.wordpress.com/2008/10/06/a15/
long time ago.
Sad to know that othing has changed. Disgusting!
Great blog with great lists!! I will have to spend some time reading through it. Thanks for the link
These people who are defending Letterman are the same people who defended Randy Rhodes when she made those disgusting remarks about Hillary. It’s bad enough to hear men defend Letterman, but when I hear women…women who DARE to call themselves Liberals or Progressives, well, that just shows me that they have no idea what the words Liberal or Progressive means.
I was hoping that we would hear more from the feminist groups standing by one of their own, but unfortunately, they are too busy putting their politics above their cause for the equality and civil rights of women.
-women who DARE to call themselves Liberals or Progressives, well, that just shows me that they have no idea what the words Liberal or Progressive means.-
many men and women today that call themselves liberals have bastardized the ideology. They are in fact elitist tools of the powers of greed. They have no ethics, but their own, they have no principles but their own, they have nor feel any sense of social responsibility…sounds just like their counterparts on the right.
i think you hit right on the head pm317. plus she probablly can’t be bought like so many politicians and therefore she is a threat to “the good ole boys” and their media they have bought. she would and could bring a whole new generation of new people with integrity into politics, government, and etc… and this is what “the establishment” is fighting against.
i think you hit the nail on the head with “can’t be bought.” i think that was 90% of the reason for the MSM’s over-the-top support for Ozero - they knew that he was someone “they could do business with.”
Okay–if Palin ‘paraded her children’ out during the campaign and that makes her family fair game it makes every last politician and his or her family fair game because they all do it. Remember Sasha and Malia on Entertainment Tonight and on the cover of every freaking magazine at the grocery checkout? Okay, so David, let’s hear your best ‘Michelle is a slut’ joke, come on we’re waiting. And by the way let’s go after the mainstream media’s kids–how about Katie C’s teenage daughters whoom she allowed to be photographed for People last year. Hypocrites all–no wonder Dante put them in the ninth circle of hell.
Yeah, and I’ve never seen Palin expose her arms in the way Michelle does.
Right on Cath!
letterman is a mean-spirited old man - he’s a has-been. Turn him OFF!!!
Oh fer cryin’ out loud! Palin took her daughter to a freakin’ baseball game.
These idiots make it sound like she had Willow standing on a corner with a 40 oz and a short skirt on.
As for those who try to claim Palin “sexualized her campaign” what about Obama’s hip gyrations in front of female reporters? I thought that showed immaturity and poor taste. There wasn’t one word of criticism from the media.
With that type of attitude there’s no wonder they see nothing wrong with making sexual jokes about a 14 y/o.
and hillary says………nothing…not a word….
i just said that up top
mark: The idea of the thread is to support women who have been trashed by the media. This is not a Hillary-bashing blog. You are showing your objectionable character in this comment. Why don’t you go on over to HuffPo or have been you kicked off there because of your caustic comments about all Democrats? Shoo!
Really? It’s Hillary bashing to point out that the lady who faced such bashing could care less if Palin’s teenage daughters (both) get bashed?
I supported Hillary in the primaries, but I really don’t support her undying Obot alegiance now. Why do you?
How do you know she could care less. How about a link to this FACT!
Because I know it’s not Obot allegiance. She’s waiting for Obama to destroy himself, which he will. It’s important in life to pick your fights. I don’t know what makes you think she doesn’t care about Palin’s anguish. You wouldn’t have been a Republican before you supported Hillary, would you?
Hillary never protested the sexism against her because she knew they would come at her even harder. Remember the genuine, sincere tears of appreciation after the NH primary? She was trashed for that. Hillary, unlike the contessa, doesn’t brag about sucking it up and taking it. AND, she, again unlike the contessa, does a great job at what she is supposed to be doing. The Clintons did NOT take it when people trashed Chelsea for helping on the campaign.
I believe Hillary is too busy doing a good job for us–not for The Messiah. I belive she gives lip service to him just to keep the hounds at bay. She wants to use her talents and knowledge for the greater good and not to get caught up fighting against idiots like Letterman.
Exactly!, Diana,
Hillary is above the chatter. She is keeping her eyes on her job and doing if for the betterment of not just America, but for all global citizens. Rarely do I see the honesty in politicians, that I see in Hillary. She , no doubt, recognizes the hounds barking at Sarah. She knows it all too well. She has always acted with dignity and grace and strength never making excuses, nor jumping into the spotlight.
There will be a time when she will say something about the sexism, but frame it in a broader understanding.
I learn something every time she speaks. She is just brilliant.
Why haven’t we heard from Michelle, being that she’s a feminist and all. How about hearing from our this-is-what-a-feminist-looks-like President?
Still waiting….yeah, I thought so…
You never miss an opportunity to needle Hillary, appears to be an obsession. I understnd how much you like her.
for once Mark has a point tho
why hasn’t she said anything? Bad enough no one else has but she had that shit turned on her not too long ago. Will she just be abused her WHOLE DAMN LIFE?
dammit I wish she and the rest of the abuse loving women would FIND ANOTHER LIFE STYLE! They are HURTING THE REST OF US!
i’m sorry but just don’t know where it will end or why some women will look past it or put UP with it? who TAUGHT them to feel so UNWORTHY???
LadyD you know what would happen. Hillary’s message would be ignored. She would be accused of being a back-stabber and a closet Republican.
As I said before, Hillary’s been a champion of human rights and womens’ rights for years. It’s not as if she’s been silent on the subject.
But any defense of Palin by Hillary, no matter how valid, would get lost in all of the vitriol and hatred that would be directed her way.
if I didn’t do something because of what I “thought” might happen BAD in the future, I’d NEVER leave my house or say a word.
I’d loved to have seen her or ANY female politician (from the LEFT) say a word.
I wish Hillary had issued a staement, too, but I think I understand why she hasn’t. To ask her to risk the punishment all over again is, IMHO, like asking a rape victim to take on a known rapist and risk getting raped again.
I don’t doubt Hillary sympathizes with what the Palins are enduring. Maybe she’s sent them a private message of support.
Please, Letterman is a punk. A small potato. I think Hillary should not dignify him with any comment. It would only make everything uglier and worse for Sarah’s daughter.
Remember in the debates , when Hill made the get Obama a pillow comment. That sentence crystallized the media’s fluffing for O.
Hillary could have complained and ranted, but she got the message across quite nicely and shamed the media without casting a spot on herself.
Also, OT a bit but Hillary’s 3 AM phone call will be in the political science text books in the future. That coined not only a phrase but a feeling.
I’m sure if Hillary was asked she would comment. Hillary was no fan of Letterman’s. He has said alot about her in the past. When she was accused of “pimping” Chelsea she complained. This is the Palin’s fight and they are doing a great job.
I understand what you’re saying but have to (on another level) disagree that it is NOT just the Palin’s fight but EVERY woman’s fight. Especially those of us with DAUGHTERS.
That’s my point.
Where is Nancy Pelosi?
Pelosi!!! Don’t hold your breath!
When asked if there was sexism in the primary with Hillary, she said she wasn’t paying attention because she was busy doing her job. Yes, she was so busy trying to get her approval rating in the low double digits.
I think people have come to a point where they will rarely stick out their neck for another, period. I understand your frustration, but I believe Sarah can handle this, and as an example which may or may not be referred back to in the future. The people who say these things, over and over, enjoy being bullies. You know the type, some people will take the bully on, while the majority will sit back, and silently be grateful it wasn’t their turn. Others will mimic and join with the bully as many women do, as well. Self respect is in short supply these days. When people can cry foul consistently, over racist, sexist, ageist and homophobic remarks; they will establish themselves to be someone who is willing to call the bully out. Cherry picking the worm excuses, are unfortunately what the majority seems to enjoy.
Ponder this, how many times have we been called racist on this site? And..how man times have we verbally slapped the shit out of people who posted truly racist remarks, 100%, we are consistent, and true to ourselves, with a firm grasp on our integrity. We are not the majority.
You mean the “Queen” of Washington DC? She wouldn’t defend any woman who represents a threat to her kingdom, even if said woman saved Nancy’s life. Ol’ Nancy pants doesn’t play well with ladies who she knows have more upstairs than she does and who could become more powerful than she is. She is another person who should have been fired for what she said and did. However, she’d have to be pried off the floor of her office before she’d leave. She’s still trying to one-up the CIA by supporting getting those pictures released. There are so many unethical, brain dead humans associated with the liberals and the Obama administration that you can get a headache just thinking about them. Add in the Hollywood/media gang and it’s a full fledged migrane. They all need to fade away.
Agreed AC. Hillary just gave another speech about human rights and womens’ rights a few days ago. She’s been talking about the subject for years.
Don’t blame Hillary if the MSM and the so-called Liberals/Progressives still aren’t listening.
Candyyyyyyyyy
not quite the same but at least she’s WORKING up there! While the rest of ROME burns.
LLLAAADDDYYY!
I turned Letterman off a few years ago for his constant trashing of Hillary and Bill Clinton.
But now it’s time to contact Letterman’s advertisers:

Thank you for these addresses! I’ve been so disappointed with responses to emails, phone calls - even to the FCC. Maybe some snail mail is what it takes…
No matter how much the Hillary-haters here want to make this about Hillary, it is NOT.
This is about David Letterman and all the other pigs who choose to bash women and teenage girls.
it’s also about those that stand by and let that crap get dumped on other women and not say something when EVER They can!!! It will never stop if WOMEN don’t stand up FIRST and demand it STOP!!
that includes contessa brewer
hillary clinton, laura bush, jane fonda, ALL of them!!
Ladydawnelle:
Hillary Clinton has spent her entire adult life fighting for issues important to women and children. We all know where she stands on the issue of disparaging and insulting women; she would add nothing new to the discussion at this point unless, of course, she just stopped doing anything else and spent every day talking about the disgusting treatment of women all over the world.
Oh wait, that’s pretty much what she does. Hillary speaks out wherever she goes in the world, demanding respect for women.
For her to get in between the Palins and Letterman would not change anything; It is up to the REST of us to get mobilized and fight back against this disgusting stuff that a few lowlifes think is humor.
What we need now are the voices of 100,000 angry women who tell Letterman’s bosses and advertisers that we are mad a hell and aren’t going to take it anymore.
I would like it though, if Laura Bush and Jane Fonda (who aren’t gainfully employed right now) would say something.
Isn’t Jane Fonda acting on Broadway–something like that–right now. I think she’s taken enough grief all her life. Let her retire from that.
Laura has enough to handle right now dealing with the “little boy” she now has at home.
true
lol @ junior
but you see - ya keep giving these woman PASSES
NO one gets a pass
we’re ALLLLLLLLLLLLlll busy! (at some level)
Actually, I think Jane Fonda’s having or about to have knee surgery.
Laura Bush is doing some truly worth work with the Susan G. Komen Foundation on women’s breast cancer. Still, I would love it if she would say something about the Letterman comments.
LadyDawnelle, you are right. We saw this happening in this past election. If we, women don’t stand up and be counted against this sort of behavior, and powerful/famous women don’t make a statement about this misogynist behavior of Letterman’s, as well as all the other misogyny that occurred this past election season, it won’t stop. One of the most disheartening things for me personally is that I’ve worked in politics all my adult life in the women’s rights arena, and inch by inch making headway we, we are not just stopped in our tracks, we are literally being pushed backwards because of this past election and That One’s need to win at any cost.
Forgot to add: This is what Pastor Martin Niemoller was talking about in his famous quote.
Exactly!
And the women who are joining in or looking away. It’s long past time we all stood up against the denigration of women and girls!
thank you for bringing the focus on where it should be.
I believe there’s a difference between people who object to Obama because he trashed the democratic process and people who hate Obama because he’s a Democrat, i. e., liberal. The people who hate having any Democrat in the WH also hate any Democrat associated with the Democrat in the WH.
And mot of them are probably people who applauded Rushbo and Ann Coulter and Fox News when those pundits talked this trash about the Democrats.
At what point do these comedians, find new material, Gov. Palin and her family are a easy laugh for comedian, they present Gov. Palin and her family as some ridiculous freak of nature , when in fact they are a very normal family who seem to love one another, I don’t believe in Gov. Palin political views, but I believe in Gov. Palin’s right to have her own voice on her views, comedians are just that comedians and in medieval times they would be simply called FOOLS.
It’s also about the “superior” urban dweller attitude against the heartland, rural way of thinking. Don’t forget that. Some big-city people just can’t believe that anyone living a more rural life has any brains.
I like the phrase “superior’ urban dweller, it goes to heart of the matter. I have to agree
exactly; she’s a big-haired, hillbilly WOMAN! that’s pretty much the definition of an idiot in “progressive” circles.
Yes, it’s also about class politics, since Palin didn’t get the right kind of education from the right kind of university … it’s about “white tr$%#sh”, etc.
The Dems are now the biggest bigots ever!
It’s about hate speech, it’s about targeting a governor and her family over and over again with no consequences, it’s about the huge double standard that it’s okay to do this to Palin but not okay to other public figures, their husbands or wives and children. If Governor Palin had gone to Harvard, was Hispanic, was pro-choice,or whatever this would not happen.
This is about abusive men saying despicable things about little girls and cowardly women and men in the media, entertainment and politics not calling these misogynists out, first and foremost. It is beneath contempt to talk about ANY little girl that way OR young woman OR older woman. To do so to assault Sarah Palin by assualting her daughter shows the deep, deep fear and hatred Lettermen and his kind have for females.
Hillary HAS stood up for Sarah by not attacking her personally during the campaign and instead congratulaing her on her HERstoric GOP nom as V.P. Sarah did the same for Hillary. Any attempt to blame or hold these two courageous women accountable for MALE abuse of females is ridiculous–and cowardly.
If there were any ladies or gentlemen in positions of power left in the media, Lettermen and his kind would be in jail.
Well said, Texas Playwright!
knock knock. is this thing on?
Ironic isn’t it that in real life, Palin’s daughter was the victim of statutory rape and the family never even attempted to have the rapist prosecuted.
Bristol’s boyfriend was also underage I believe. When both are underage and consenting, I don’t believe that its legally called statutory rape.
Was she? When is the age of consent in Alaska? It’s not 18 everywhere.
I thought the legal age of consent is 16 in Alaska and Bristol is now 18. Per Levi Johnston, the father of the baby, they started having sex shortly before she became pregnant at aged 17. Even if they had sex as soon as they started seeing each other, she was 16 when they started dating. Nowhere do I see where he or she says they were having sex when she was 15.
Oh look at this statement that basically calls Bristol Palin a slut:
A source, confirmed by People, says that Bristol is not dating, but has been “texting and chatting” with a high school boyfriend she had before Johnston. If Bristol was interested in sex enough to get pregnant while in High School, then she’s likely to sleep around now that she’s dumped her baby’s daddy.
I can’t believe that last line. How offensive to mothers who had babies when they were in high school.
http://www.hollywoodgrind.com/levi-johnston-exposes-bristol-palin-mood-swings-on-tyra-banks/
So…. using that twisted reasoning, Obama’s daughters should be fair game for jokes too because the father has an oratory style that makes a grown man get a tingle up his leg.
In fact, it’s 16 in Alaska.
Perhaps the Palins had the integrity and wisdom to hold Bristol equally responsible for the pregnancy, and have let her face the consequences for her actions instead of indulging her by attacking someone else for the mistake. Parents need to let their children experience the downside of their discretions, and resist the urge to shield them by laying off blame on someone else.
Should read “indiscretions”, pardon.
Blame the girls. It’s an old worn out story.
I have read this posting and looked at a lot of the clips and have only this to say. Right now we are living in a sick country. If someone talked about my wife or daughters or grand daughters…I would go on his show and debate it with him….He wouldn’t like the out come…..
This Joker is wild–I like it.
First of all, I am delighted to find very few commentators on this blog defending the indefensible.
The idiots who maintain that the “joke” was about Bristol obviously don’t understand humor. There would be nothing funny about an 18 year old mother of an infant leaving the child to go to a baseball game in NYC and having sex with a 33 year old stranger between innings. How is that humorous?
What is supposed to be funny is the idea that a woman whose religion condemns most sexual activity would have a second daughter impregnated out of wedlock. See how hysterical that is? It has nothing to do with disgusting attacks on her children. It is all about her, an attractive low class slut, who didn’t go to a top flight school and whose political views differ from ours.
I am thoroughly disgusted by people who call themselves liberals or Democrats who are defending
this flagrant display of rabid misogyny.
judy
That makes sense to me–after all, SNL’s skit on Todd “doing his daughters” ran before the election and I guess Letterman and his writers tried to outdo that disgusting reference so they definitely knew who was sitting next to Sarah at the game–they get paid to know. He should be fired immediately.
One cannot expect anything better from these media PIGS but GRUNT GRUNT!!
[...] the issue. Many women and men, yet again, chose to knock Sarah Palin, blame her for the mess, and defend Letterman. And those who simply dismiss it as “utterly ridiculous” because Letterman “was [...]
