Letterman’s Teen Age Booty Call
By Larry Johnson on June 12, 2009 at 3:19 PM in Current Affairs
I’ve been waiting for someone to recall the furor that erupted when David Shuster (he plays a journalist on MSNBC) said the Clinton’s were “pimping out” Chelsea Clinton. At least NBC understood what an apology is:
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
And Letterman is lamely trying to insist he’s just a jokester?
Sexually demeaning women and girls is not a legitimate target of humor unless the woman or girl in question is leading a moral crusade in public against certain behavior while she is engaging in the very conduct in private. For example, if Sarah’s girls were public leaders in a campaign to promote chastity while screwing their brains out then their plea for privacy would be pretty lame. Last I checked neither Sarah Palin nor her daughters have been not crusading against premarital sex. They certainly have not been guilty of hypocrisy on this front. She’s against abortion, she may prefer that unmarried folks abstain from sex, but she’s not been using her bully pulpit to push that cause. She also has not been condemning girls or women who engage in such conduct.
The hatred and fear evinced by the establishment media towards this woman and her family is astonishing. She genuinely scares the shit out the TV and media luminaries. Why? I see a couple of reasons. She is fearless. When she took on corruption in her own party she sent a clear signal that she is not part of the go along to get along crowd. Can’t have that shit in Washington!! She might actually keep a campaign promise.
Second, she resonates with mainstream America. You don’t have to be ivy league or have a silver spoon shoved up your ass to be a leader and be successful. She breaks the mold.
This is not to say she has handled the sudden fame deftly or proved to be an agile debater when ambushed by the likes of Katie Couric, but she is teachable and could be very formidable in a future national campaign.
But using her teenage girls as a butt of jokes by an ass-hat like Letterman is wrong and if CBS does not suspend him or at least force an apology then CBS should suffer economic damage. Let’s identify the sponsors and start calling them. Make them pay for a verbal rape.

Letterman IS a jokester. He’s a comedian. The difference with David Schuster was that he was a journalist representing a news program covering an important election when he made a crude comment about Chelsea Clinton and so it warranted a full apology from MSNBC. Letterman isn’t part of a news program, he is a late night comedian. It was just a joke. A tasteless joke, but a joke nonetheless.
Palin is making a mountain out of a molehill. She may be a refreshing political voice, but she needs thicker skin should she enter national politics.
So was Imus. So you have no problem calling college women basketball players nappy headed hos just because it was done by an entertainer?
Letterman’s joke wasn’t THAT bad.
Yes, it was.
Jokes are always in earnest. It is just a way of getting away with saying something that you really meant to say with “I didn’t mean it–it was just a joke.
Letterman obviously has a lot of kool-aid drinking writers and they are terrified of Palin getting more political traction as someone who speaks what’s in the mind of many Americans.
No, it wasn’t. One joke was about Palin having a slutty flight attendant look. Okay. Would you like me to compare that joke to some of the stuff that has been said about Hillary Clinton? It doesn’t compare.
And the questionable one about Arod was clearly about the oldest daughter, Bristol. It was tasteless, but hardly on the same level as calling college student athletes “nappy headed hoes”.
Yes, it was that bad. And the joke is just as bad being about Willow as it is with Bristol.
Also you seem to forget the implication of being a prostitute by bringing Spitzer into the joke.
Rape and prostitution about teenage girls it as bad as it gets. You do realize that teenage girls are being kidnapped and placed into prostitution all over the world, don’t you? This is no laughing matter just because you don’t like Palin.
Here is the rub. I bet you would get upset if the joke was about the Obama girls.
I don’t think Sarah Palin cares about the slutty flight attendant crack.
What irked her and the husband was the comment about Willow getting knocked up.
Now Dave says AFTER the fact that he was making a crack about Bristol.
So either
1. He is using tired rehashed old crap from months ago to get a cheap laugh.
2. He was inferring that all her kids are sluts and Willow’s next.
I tend to think it was the second one…and when he got caught on it, he comes up with the stupid, “I joke, I keeed, I keeed” line.
Either way, old tired jokes aren’t funny, and inferring that all the Palins are slutbags ain’t hilarious either.
Hey when are they going to start making joke about Michelle kitchen look, that outfit she wore in London looked like a clown suit am waiting on those jokes from these so called comedian and I want to see if people like arch200 here is going it think its funny.
So arch200
what are you
a Bit**, Cu**, Slu*, Ho, Wank**, or a Basta**?
Come on let’s have a laugh… the laughs on you today right?
Yep disgusting whatever angle it comes from it’s disgusting.
Oh so knocking up the oldest daughter is okay with you? That was Letterman’s reasoning and it just sunk him further into perversion.
This was as bad as what Imus did.
You know what the difference was?
Imus said it without thinking.
Letterman’s remarks were written for him and approved by him.
Imus went to those college girls and apologized.
Letterman told Palin to come to him and gave a half-wittef explanation – no apology.
Imus was fired.
Letterman did not even get his hand slapped.
Imus got fired because his joke was racist and Al Sharpton and the AA community were all over him in a New York minute for making this comment, which, unlike Letterman, was unscripted.
Let’s face it. Racism still trumps sexism. It’s long past time for women and men to get “Al Sharpton” on anyone and everyone who still believes it’s ok to demean and belittle women in such a sexist manner and excuse it by hiding under the cloak of “it’s just a joke”.
Obama was allowed 30 minutes of free air time during the primary for just a hint of racism (Hillary was attacked daily with horrible sexist remarks and wasn’t allowed to even defend herself)on all of the major networks in order to lecture the entire country on the evils of racism. Until Sarah and/or Hillary, who have had to endure sexist attacks without mercy since the election are allowed the same courtesy to lecture the country on the evils of sexism, then sexism/misognynism will never be eradicated from our society.
Enough is enough.
How can you say “it was clearly about Bristol?”
She wasn’t there. The fourteen year old was at the ballpark. I hate it when apologists try to tell us what someone really meant –
we hear this a lot with pundits explaining what Obama meant to say (57 states) or Biden actually meant (swine flu kerfuffle) or how statements are taken out of context (Stotomayor’s latina women’s superior judgment)
YOU CANNOT EXPLAIN LETTERMAN’S INTENT. You can only react to his remarks. Obviously, they don’t bother you. Now, Arch200, we know where you stand on the issue of using politician’s children for political gain. Anything is fair game including children being publicly humiliated for a laugh. Rather soulless, I would say.
In context, one would assume that the “joke” was about the daughter who accompanied Palin to the game, namely Willow. So when Malia Obama is 14 years old (in 2012), are you saying it would be acceptable to make “jokes” about raping her? Or about her and prostitution. Or is it okay *now*? Where’s the cutoff? Age 10 or age 14?
Perhaps a “joke” about David Letterman pimping out his young son to get Michael Jackson on his show would also be “funny”. It’s just a “joke” after all. His father is a public figure, so he must’ve asked for it.
Okay, so maybe he did really intend the comment to be about Bristol. Why was that okay? Because she got pregnant out of wedlock at age 18? So did Obama’s mother. Perhaps that will be next.
I’m *really* tired of hearing dissipated, washed-up, old gasbags like Rush and Letterman puff themselves up by taking cheap shots at defenseless kids (and notice how it’s always little girls). Grown (well, physically grown at least) men who abuse children aren’t “witty” or “funny” – and they don’t belong on the airwaves.
Actually it WAS that bad.
Okay, so if Dave makes a joke about Stanley Ann getting knocked up at a baseball game and little Barack was born, would you still think it’s not that bad? By you stating that it’s not that bad to joke about someone’s daughter (18 years old or not) getting knocked up makes a sad statement about our society and how women should not make a “big deal” out of sexual insults.
Yes! I am waitng for the Stanley Ann unwed pregnancy joke. Dave? Jon? It could be really funny working A-Rod and a future president into the joke.
Dave? Jon?
Letterman’s “joke” was far worse. Imus was bad, but it was a spontaneous moment of stupidity. Letterman had the joke written down, and delivered it in a taped show. At several points he could have deleted the joke, but he didn’t. I think that’s called malice of forthought. A planned murder (1st degree) is considered much worse than a murder committed in the heat of the moment (2nd degree). Letterman is guilty of 1st degree disgusting stupidity, Imus was only guilty of stupidity in the 2nd degree. It would be nice if Letterman suffered the kind of punishment that Imus received, especially if it is proportional to his particular discretion. I’m not holding my breath though.
A well reasoned analysis. In Virginia it is Slander per se to imply criminal conduct such as sex with a minor or in the case of the Spitzer comment the implication being a prostitute for money.
And VERY TELLING: The joke was omitted from the network’s posted transcript of the monologue.
Then it wouldn’t be THAT BAD to apologize.
So if Letterman does a top ten list that includes jokes about one of the Obama girls having sex (consensual or otherwise) with a member of one of the sports teams visiting the White House, and saying Michelle looks like a crack ho would you still think it was only a comedian making a “joke”, and that it wasn’t that bad?
The only thing more disgusting than Letterman right now are the jackasses making excuses for him.
Georgia, YOU ARE SPOT ON, if the shoe was on the other foot, boy oh boy watch out for da fueror.
Arch, we aren’t talking about the Misery Olympics here–your insult was worse than mine. What Letterman said was demeaning and disgusting. What Don Imus said was demeaning and thoughtless. What Shuster said was demeaning and unprofessional [and although he apologized, there was a lot of whining about how "unfair" it was to Shuster that he was put on leave for 3 weeks. Because the man had a career and a family and HRC with her protest was trying to "take him down."] Baloney!
As long as the public puts up with this nonsense, it will continue. There is no such thing as “selective sexism,” anymore than selective racism. We either believe in fair treatment and fair, decent coverage for all or we agree to free-for-all mudslinging–smutty comments, racial and ethnic slurs galore.
It’s about common respect. If you don’t get that, you don’t get anything!
Wny are all of you damn women so full of common sense and reason? Makes us guys look bad.
Larry, you are a tough old bird, and beneath that clear, tough mind, you, sir, are a gentleman. On behalf of all of us damn women, THANK YOU.
AMEN!!!!!!!!!
Texas Playwright, you continue to use the terms “Ladies” and “Gentlemen” and for that I thank you.
Let’s hope you are starting a trend.
Yes, Larry, thank you. You are a very, very smart man!
Yes, it was THAT bad. If the disgusting comments about the Palin girls were directed at 0bama’s daughters you better believe Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, NOW and every other self-righteous hypocritical scam organization out there would have Letterman removed from the air waves.
Recall that JJ’s reference to Jews from NY as “Hymies” from “Hymietown,” outed by Milton Coleman, a black reporter writing for the Washington Post, did not derail his run for the Presidency. Instead, he blamed the Jews for trying to derail his campaign.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/frenzy/jackson.htm
Hey, that’s kinds like some comments on this blog, blaming Letterman’s inappropriate comments on the Palin daughters, on their mother’s inability to roll with the political punches.
Letterman’s joke was worse than what Imus said.
Imus came back was extraordinarily and sincerely apologetic. Letterman came back and said that he meant her older daughter not her younger daughter (oh, that certainly explains that – A$$).
Imus went to the meet those girls he insulted and he offered his apology publicly and privately. Letterman asked Palint o come to him on his show and show no sincere remorse.
Imus said something without thinking. Letterman’s remarks were written for him and approved by him. Imus was immediately fired and virtually banned from radio for a long period of time. Letterman hasn’t even has his hand slapped.
Letterman should, at the very least, be suspended from television for a period of time and be forced to do volunteer service for abused women groups or rape counceling groups.
And that doesn’t include calling a woman governor a “slutty flight attendant.”
I’m taking Larry’s lead and contacting all Letterman’s advertisers as well as the network.
Like what you wrote.
Was it not also a demeaning statement to say “slutty flight attendant look” I take that to imply that all flight attendats look slutty.
If you have a daughter and letterman said that about her, you would probably have been outside the studio waiting to wring his neck. On the other hand, by your reply maybe you wouldn’t care because you thought it was funny.
Agreed M.P. If someone said that about my daughter I’d be out for blood and loaded for bear. My daughter is an adult, true. But she’ll always be my little girl no matter how old she gets.
It’s always a really bad move to piss off momma bear.
ARCH200– ARE YOU KIDDING? I can’t believe anyone thinks making someone’s child the butt of a joke on national television is okay. It’s hard enough to be a teenager but then to have someone like David Letterman use you to get a lame laugh is sickening.
Any time someone hints about knocking up a woman, let alone a 14 year old, it’s not funny. It’s a cheap joke and Letterman should apologize, like Palin says to women. Stop enabling that kind of humor.
despicable.thats how bad it was.
It was not a joke and was never intended to be a joke. He was intentionally targeting her and attempting to demean her and diminish her by making her children a laughingstock. Just as much as I find Letterman detestable, my feelings extend to the members of his audience who also exhibited a mean spirit and lack of conscience. Unreal.
arch
Would it have been ‘THAT BAD’ if he called Michelle “slutty” or said that A-Rod had knocked up her 13 year-old during the seventh inning? Or stated that Spitzer was looking for Malia or Sasha? And this is just the extension of what the governor put up with since June when it was joked on NBC’s SNL that Todd was “doing his daughters.” Why all of this is okay for a woman governor who happens to be conservative and who didn’t go to an ivy league school and who worked her way up without any help but not okay for Michelle Obama is the real and only point now.
it was worse it was made about a 14 yr old!
Thanks Larry for the links to those who advertise on the Tonight show. I have sent out two emails so far.
The first to Olive Garden (who also owns Red Lobster) and I gave them the date that I recently ate their. Since I charged the meal, they should be able to see I am a real customer.
The second to Intel of which I am a stock holder. I told them if they do fix this situation, then my next computer will have an AMD chip in it.
My next email will be to Capitol One. I typically use their credit card, but I do have a second one. Starting tomorrow the competitive card will be getting all my business.
Larry Thank you so much for actively encouraging people be proactive. As always, Highest Kudos to you and what great research! There is yet an additional and very simple way to also let CBS feel the pain.
The results of Nielsen Media Research’s May 2009 SWEEPS predicated which shows how much each advertiser would pay for 15, 30 and 60 second blocks of advertising time. Nielsen not only tracks TV, but also household shopping.
Since 2000, Nielsen has installed “People Meter” boxes on TV’s and given homes little hand scanners to read the bar code of their groceries. Each household is selected to represent 60-90 THOUSAND homes depending on household composition and size. These numbers are then extrapolated into millions of people in the ratings you see in the Newspapers.
Nielsen sells these statistics for Millions of Dollars to Advertising firms and their major clients. In fact, their entire New York City operation was set up in 2005 for the main purpose of being close to the Major New York Marketing Firms, the largest in the USA.
You also need to be aware that Nielsen credits shows you DVR, as they are being taped and NOT when you view them. All DVR’s made from 2006 on have a chip that captures this information. IMO they should allow viewing (scanning) for 5 minutes before a show or network is given credit. Ah well – Another fight for another day.
If you are angry enough to want to specifically target David Letterman and Contessa Brewer and MSNBC’s Morning Joe and Matt Lauer, then those with people Meters simply need to block those shows. Those with the hand scanners should stop scanning any purchased products produced by firms Larry listed in this article.
Those with the Meters or Scanners, as well as those without, just simply need need to write, call or fax Nielsen and inform them that their statistics will be wrong, because their formulae for number of households and people will be skewed, since you and your family (even w/o meters and scanners) are blocking certain shows and not using certain products.

Nielsen’s bread and butter depends on highly reliable statistical accuracy and they will definitely take action. They in turn will certainly let CBS know that their numbers are dropping like stone.
The advertisers who signed up as a result of the May Sweeps numbers, have “wiggle” room in their contracts and if audience share, or shopping numbers drop below a certain level they can pull out. Thus Nielsen has ample incentive in intervening.
Thanks Larry for the links to those that advertise on the Tonight Show. So far I have sent 2 emails.
The first to Olive Garden (who also owns Red Lobster). I sent them my name, the location I recently ate at, the date and told them that I put it on my credit card–so they can verify I was a customer.
Second I sent an email to Intel–which I hold stock in. If they do not do the right thing, then I will buy a computer with an AMD chip in it next time.
No longer will I use my Capitol One card. I will my other one. I think I will wait a few weeks on this one and let them see my behavior before I send them an email. I urge everyone to stop using Capitol One. They monitor sales daily, so this could have an immediate effect if only 2 or 3% stopped using their card.
Replace Palin’s daughter’s name with that of your mother’s, or sister’s, or your wife. Would you still feel it wasn’t so bad?
We must put a STOP to misogyny no matter what form it takes. A joke? Jokes are an easy way to promote all forms of bigotry. No one could breathe during the brown clown’s campaign for fear of being called racist but that was OK. Gov. Palin is trying to make a molehill out of a mountain…a mountain of hate.
Letterman does not get a pass because he is a comedian. As a late night host, he has a powerful pulpit before a loyal audience. These kinds of misogynist attitudes send signals and offer tacit permission to other idiots who wish to talk to and possibly physically demean and harm women. This rampant behavior amounts to a teaching tool if no one objects.
Young, impressionable people watch this drivel and think its okay. That is a huge problem and he should be roundly chastised and apologize for his disgusting conduct.
It is very possible to be a comedian without constantly resorting to demeaning women. There are very successful comics who do just that and their bank accounts do not suffer simply because they choose to find humor in something besides objectifying, insulting or inciting violence against women and girls.
One of the things I love about Ellen Degeneres is that her humor is not at the expense of someone’s feelings. She’s funny and successful without resorting to ridicule. When these bots try to excuse Letterman’s boorish behavior as humor, they’ve already lost the argument.
right; i seriously wish they would can letterman and give his show to ellen.
If that what you think how about what Imus said. He was fired for it. He is also a comedian. Whats the difference? He called a bunch of women hoes, so whats the difference? He should be fired!
he had the rev AL on his case..wish rev Al would jump on this,,gutterman would be fired today,,
arch if it were your daughter, i wonder if you would be saying the same thing!
arch
Is it okay to bash Gov. Palin because she happens to belong to the ‘wrong party’? Is this your lame excuse here? Drawing distinguishing features between a “Jokester” and a “Newsman” like Tucker is asinine and false at best. Why? Where were you during the Primaries? Were the grossly misogynist media fratboys’ attacks on Hillary Clinton made by ‘professional’ journalists?! Grow up and admit that we have no PROFESSIONAL journalists at MSNBC(owned by GE–the nuclear interest that bought Obama since his votes…which are not reported by ‘professional journalists’) or CBS (owned by Westinghouse, the warmongers that bought Puppet Obama to bomb the shit out of Pakistani/Afgan civilians–now numbering 3 MILLION homeless thanks to Obama’s Hope and Change!
So, for your ignorant comment to be taken seriously, one has to be (a) democrat (b) socially liberal and (c) regressive anti-woman antideluvian Obamyopic ignoramus.
Grow up and see that Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin were both bashed by so-called professionals as well as their DAUGHTERS. If that’s your way of condoning Sexism, be Letterman’s guests. I won’t be applauding, but that’s where your misogynist clueless commentary belongs!
Shame on you!
Arch, yes it was a joke, a very TASTELESS and DISGUSTING one at that. However, having a title of “comedian” or “entertainer” doesnt give you the license to say whatever you want, and still expect to be paid and respected for it. While it doesnt seem to matter much to you, WE ALL HAVE mothers, grand-mothers.. some have daughters, sisters, friends… who ARE ALL WOMEN, and they do not deserve to have this vile 62 yr old man “tell jokes” to a national audience, and thereby increasing its acceptance in our society! Its not fair, and is certainly not something he should be rewarded for. This is exactly the same mysogenistic behavior that EACH one of us Clinton supporters saw during the primary (WHICH WAS LARRY’s POINT!)and it wasnt acceptable then, and isnt now!
You should read the post again, and then call your mom to say sorry!
I am a Clinton supporter. You want to convince me that Palin has had it especially hard? All these conservatives crying about Palin being mistreated DID NOT GIVE A DAMN about Hillary Clinton jokes. In fact, they engaged in them. So spare me the hypocrisy.
If you are really a Clinton supporter, you would feel bad about this AWFUL JOKE. This is the same kind of attitude that prevented Hillary from the nomination. And it will be again. I think that many Obama supporters are afraid of Sarah Palin for 2012 so the attacks are coming on early.
Did I say I enjoyed the joke?
No you justified it as not that bad.
Rape…eh no biggie.
well besides it being a bit generational
(the joke sucked to my generation and was not that bad to my daughter’s)
besides that (and rap music) ack
I’m remembering that WOMEN can be as SPITEFUL and VENGEFUL as any TWO MEN! And some of them want pay back still for what happened 10, 20 yrs ago.
Screw sticking up for your WHOLE FRIGGEN GENDER occasionally! If you get ONE chance to “act all old testament” eye 4 an eye – justified? Pahahaha ! Yea, and Allah still gives those other freaks a thousand virgins too!
ARGH! I’ll never justify it. I may feel that way myself occasionally too but right now – it’s UGLY and I’m not doin it any more.
& serial statutory rape of a politician’s 14 yr old daughter.
And the women on the left gave a damn about Hillary? Did Pelosi say something? A bro before a ho, remember? I don’t care if you’re standing on the left, right or center, misogyny is not acceptable. Why not make a joke about Sarah’s policy…why attack her appearance? He not only offended Palin, he insulted female flight attendants. Who in the hell says slutty flight attendant anymore…it’s so stupid and so 70s.
I’m a Clinton supporter too and equally disgusted by Palin’s treatment and the double-standard applied to conservative women.
Agreed — but I and just about every other person here were screaming loud and long at the networks through the whole election season that they should stop all the misogyny against Hillaty Clinton. We certainly have a right to be angry — no matter who these insults are directed toward.
Misogyny is wrong. I’m not concerned who is standing up. That is their problem if they choose to be hypocrites and not stand up for everyone. I will not be like them. What Letterman did was wrong, just as what Shuster did was wrong.
Your comment proves that there’s a hatred for women that goes beyond Hillary. Women should not absolve that type of jokes because it feeds a view that women are objects to be used and abused.
I’m not a conservative. I was, in fact, a Clinton supporter (and briefly an Edwards supporter). And I found the treatment of Palin (and her family) to be every bit as vile as the misogyny directed at Hillary and the Clintons (both from the Right and from the Fauxgressive Obamasphere). Frankly, the whole campaign made me well and truly ashamed of my party. There was no excuse for any of it.
well said.
You obviously weren’t reading this blog during the primaries. There was nothing but outrage about the treatment Hillary was receiving from Obama and Rush.
BTW – no need to switch your argument and start talking about the conservatives. This is all about the liberal – Dave Letterman. Please stay on topic.
BTW – if you wish to reverse your statements, that is okay with the people on this blog – we encourage people to take responsibility for their actions, which includes realizing we are all humans and mistakes are made.
Letterman made a tasteless vile joke. He should lose his job! If I make a mistake I lose my job. Why shouldn’t he? He’s hosted his own program on television for like 25 years. This joke should be the end of his career! I can’t believe this important story isn’t on the front page of every newspaper in the country! We cannot let comedians get away with making unfunny vile jokes! Obama has ruined our country.
I’m a Clinton supporter as well, and I am appalled at the levels of sexism being directed at both Clinton and Palin. In fact, right now, during and since the election, I believe Palin has been treated worse. Sure, fellow Democrats supporting Obama in concert with a fawning mainstream media acted very badly toward Clinton, and that is why many of us Clinton supporters did not vote for Obama. But Democrats acted even meaner and with more vitriol toward Palin, and they have not stopped even after the election. For example, don’t you love those so-called progressive and enlightened liberal Democrats wearing “Sarah Palin is a Cunt” t-shirts? Wow, that is an uplifting message toward women, ain’t it?
Sorry, if you are a Clinton supporter, you should also be able to see that Palin and her family have been treated like dirt, and it continues. As a lifelong Democrat up until Obama’s win in the Democratic primary, I can tell you that Democrats are a despicable lot, especially in their treatment of women, and I will have nothing to do with them until Obama is gone.
Thankyou gianni.
I’m curious why the remarkably similar in tone Guy Cimbalo Playboy “Hate Sex” article hasn’t been mentioned yet at NQ. Maybe this isn’t the right blog, and maybe there is some slight embarassment about bringing it up since all of the “Hate F***” targets were conservative women, but I think it is important to point out that at least Cimbalo lost his job over the matter. Is it possible that Playboy has more integrity than CBS does on matters involving the objectification of women? These are strange and troubling times we live in.
Slam Dunk!!
Speaking as someone who writes regularly for this site — I thought what Playboy did was despicable. Misogyny is wrong no matter the target — there was no deliberate choice made not to cover it here — for me personally, it is more about not wanting to give those filthy a**es oxygen.
If you are still here, do you have link to Cimbalo being fired over this transgression? Please attach if you do.
Obviously, we don’t mind defending conservative women at this site, otherwise you wouldn’t see article after article ripping Letterman a new one. By the way, I think Letterman is even worse than Playboy because Playboy is a magazine one can choose to buy — Letterman is on network television and I would imagine has an even larger audience. While both are wrong, I would think Letterman has to subscribe to a higher set of standards. Obviously, he does not.
And I agree with you that these are very troubling times we live in.
Ani,
try http://neveryetmelted.com/2009/06/02/playboy-misteps/
Thanks so much for writing back — I’ll go look…
You know what? It’s actually worse than I thought. Cimbalo wasn’t the one that was fired, it was Tommy Christopher who was fired by AOL for attempting to expose the vile Playboy article and the bruhaha that developed over it. I would apologize for the inaccuracy, but apologies are so archaic, while lame excuses are in vogue, so my excuse is that it is difficult to get a clear understanding of the facts that swirl in the pornograghic world that is contained in a septic tank.
http://neveryetmelted.com/2009/06/05/aol-fires-writer-over-hate-sex-playboy-article/
Well, that’s the rumor. I don’t believe that’s the official reason given by AOL, though…the timing looks suspicious.
Well, I happen to think Letterman was considerably worse. After all, he didn’t just crudely demean and insult an adult public figure – instead he chose a minor child as his target.
This is a guy who has complete control over his show. It is recorded hours before it is aired – plenty of time to make sure he was pimping out the right daughter for rape. I think he knew exactly who was at that game and deliberately chose to encourage raping a 14 year old for ‘laughs’.
He did it because he wanted the publicity as more ‘cutting edge’ than his new competition, Conan O’Brien, who is known for his vicious frat-boy humor and he did it because he thought he could get away with it since the Obama campaign made it ‘OK’ to assault Sarah Palin and her family on the public airwaves.
Frankly, I think Letterman should be arrested on a sex offender charge.
And what about Alex Rodriguez? Letterman apparently thinks hispanics are just a bunch of out of control hot-blooded sex maniacs all ready to rape 14 year olds at the seventh inning stretch. I’m surprised he hasn’t already filed a defamation of character suit.
No kidding.
And it isn’t like he is in the locker room at that time of the game.
He is on the field or in the dugout in full view of the fans at all times.
Letterman is joking that A-Rod would be going at it essentially on the field.
all true craig, and letterman has been gunning for palin long before this. at first i applauded letterman for starting to speak up during the bush years then he morphed into this mean spirited whiner who feels he should be “understoood”.
remember that person who slam dunked us years ago and then smiled saying “i’m just kidding” knowing full well they had just crushed you.
Anyone (from someone who has never watched his show) have any thoughts as to whether the prominent laughter to this pathetic joke is real? If it is real, which I suspect it is, then the problem is far bigger then Letterman. There was even laughter to parts of explanation that seemed not even by him intended to be funny.
There is a live audience, and someone holding up a “laugh” card.
That makes the audience the same as the seals at Sea World.
Don’t insult the seals!
Thanks, I would expect that the audience comes human “class” (class i.e. as use in programming language such as Java) that would be throwing eggs at Carrie Prejean and have no idea that BO supports her position.
I have only seen a live taping of Leno which didn’t have a guy with a laugh card.
They only had a lighted applause sign for the intro and exits to commercials. I don’t recall it being lit for when the guests were introduced as I was watching them walk in. And the audience stood in respect and clapped for them on their own.
When the joke bombed on Leno….it bombed no laugh prompts. Leno might work the joke to make funny if it bombed, like with a look or a pause, or a comment but that was it.
So in my experience those laughs were real. To be fair, Letterman might have a different set up.
have you listened to KO msnbc defending letterman and saying sarah got her apology and that she is basically milking this issue for her own benifit to get attention! He said the audience laughed .
“And the questionable one about Arod was clearly about the oldest daughter, Bristol.”–arch200
Actually–NO. Governor Palin went to a Yankees game with one daughter: Willow. Every news report said WILLOW, the 14 year old.
The writers of Letterman *knew* which daughter she was with. It was NY local news and Letterman and his writers are local. (Plus, they research daily news for a living.)
Letterman and his writers were not trying to make a joke about Bristol. They were making jokes about the Palin females as sluts in general. Like they are all one female slut archetype…the mom, the girls–all looking and behaving “slutty.” It’s CLASSIC sexism and misogyny.
Agree.
Also, is Letterman’s excuse that it is okay to use Palin’s older daughter in the same fashion?
“It’s CLASSIC sexism and misogyny.”
No. It’s the worst kind of sexism and misogygy.
Your right. It is a hate crime, plain and simple. Letterman and all the others that bow down before their emperor hate all things that are not Obama. But honestly, would you expect anything else from anyone who follows the man who upholds a religion where murderers are promised 16-or maybe even 57 virgins for using themselves as a weapon of mass destruction? Letterman attempted to destroy [A] lady (and her family)that opposed his political idol.
And don’t forget the Eliot Spitzer joke (he was NY Gov. who got caught being involved with a young prostitute).
Letterman said the next night, after he said Willow got knocked up in the seventh inning by 32 YEAR OLD OLD A-Rod: The hardest part of their NY trip was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter.
That’s disgusting too!! Eliot Spitzer is 50 YEARS OLD. Letterman is joking about Eliot Spitzer the perceived OLD PERVERT as coming after her underage daughter?? Or is he saying that Willow Palin is like a prostitute Spitzer would find irresistible? Both.
David Letterman: 62 Years Old
Eliot Spitzer: 50 Years Old
A-Rod: 33 Years Old
Willow Palin: 14 years old
Something WEIRD about a 62 year old man making jokes about 50 year old men going after teenage girls and 33 year old men having sex with teenagers. Disgusting.
true; the reality is that these men (like letterman) view the ideal man-woman relationship as something like a parent-child relationship (where the man is the parent), rather than a relationship of equals. it’s sad; these men are so weak, they are terrified of being overshadowed by a “mere woman.”
If Letterman used the name Sasha or Malia instead of the Palin daughter, Letterman would be off the air. Or if Letterman said that Sasha got raped by Daniel Radcliffe on the Harry Potter, set as a joke, Letterman would be off the air. If Letterman said that Michelle was a slutty flight attendant, Letterman would be off the air. The double standard…
Sarah responds Palin: ‘Naïve to believe Letterman’
And speaking of Shuster, double standards and hypocrisy President Obama vs. Candidate Obama
I keep waiting for Obama the Feminist [according to Ms. Magazine] to speak out against this type of joking or this type of attidude. And where is the Mommy-in-Chief role model… shouldn’t Michelle be speaking out against this type of joking?
Obama will never speak out against any of this –unless NOT to do so would hurt him in the polls.
Truly, the only way to get the message across is to substitute the name of one of Pres. Obama’s daughters as the recipient of the vile diatribe and then perhaps you will make your point. Otherwise, people just don’t get it and keep excusing it away.
Hey, I read this in the news. Did any of you see this?
First Lady Michelle Obama, and her daughters Malia and Sasha were in England a few days ago and for Sasha’s Birthday, they got a tour of the set of the new Harry Potter film, did you hear about this Paul?
No, I didn’t.
Well it turned out that Sasha got a special birthday gift from Daniel Radcliffe. She was allowed to do a nude sex scene with him.
Hee…. Hee… Hee..
Can’t wait for that movie to come out. Harry Potter Bonking the American President’s Eight Year old Daughter.
Hee… Hee.. Hee..
——-
Think that’s funny?
Conservatives don’t. And that’s the difference. That is why liberalism isn’t merely wrong but is indeed evil.
What is your definition of “liberalism”? Here’s Webster’s definition: “a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties”.
I’m proud to say I’m a liberal.
Liberalism by definition of the ‘OLD DEMOCRATIC PARTY’was in short: Whatever is good for the American people. Today Liberalism used interchangeabely with ‘Progressive (Progressism) Democrat(ic?) Party’ can be described as the march toward socialism, which is just around the corner, searching for communism. IE whatever is deemed good for the power(s) that be.
Well, Paper, I don’t know about the “essential goodness of the human race,” but the rest of this definition sounds pretty good to me. But the word “liberal” has been successfully demonized as the epitome of evil, so trying to rehabilitate the true meaning of the word at this point in time is, I’m afraid, a losing battle. We don’t have to use the word to fight for the “autonomy of the individual” and “the protection of political and civil liberties.” We can just fight under a different banner. Here’s mine:
Party Unity My Ass
-I just don’t understand how so called progressive women can stand and not openly condemn “jokes” like this-
This is a bs statement. Remember what Larry said, a post back, don’t hold a group accountable by the actions of a few.
what really gets me are the women sitting there on tv not speaking up. can they really believe it is funny?
The worst part is the underlying message. If we don’t like what you symbolize… we are coming after your children. Because we have declared war on what you symbolize and all is fair in war. That is the real underlying message here, beneath the failed humor.
Thanks for compiling this list of Letterman sponsors, Larry. I’ll put it to good use.
I posted this over at the Washington Post…about the Letterman/Palin feud.
Read this article by Lisa Morales in today’s Washington Post
Forget Conan’s Numbers. We’re Too Busy Keeping Score in the Palin-Letterman Match.
Sure did sound like a Letterman apologist.
It’s also personal to me, my Mother, my Grandmother my Sister, my Nieces, my Aunts, my Cousins, and my female friends and acquaintances.
When will women wake up because in the final analysis it’s about YOU!
Clinton jokes a that time was bad no one liked them but you know what Hillary went and slept with the enemy, so one would take it no harm no foul, she forgave all the Obama loonies.
I can never understand up to this day why not after all that. Maybe the Obama fans now feel all women are like Hillary, cuss them, abuse them, slander their young children its ok, women will all come around and love and support their side no matter how they are abused, the more the abuse the greater the support.
This was the example allowed by Hillary so now its open season on any woman that goes into politics, unfortunately for them Sarah Palin is different she is not going to sit by and let it be done to her, and it does not matter if it cost her a election or a position in office.
I completely agree with you.
I was a Hillary supporter, but she didn’t stand up for her rights, nor for women, so she gets no support from me.
It’s exactly how you say. Men can walk on women on their way to the top and women will follow them, just to kiss their a*s.
We’ll come around, we always do.
The only way anything will change is if women change that behavior.
Palin even understood that Hillary couldn’t stand up and say enough.
She wasn’t running as a woman….she was running as President. Which she had to explain more than once.
So, obviously, the immediate response would have been. ‘If you can’t take the sexism on the campaign trail…how can you be President?’
To say she didn’t stand up for women is ridiculous, because when she gave that speech in China as First Lady, she was warned not to repeatedly. It still stands as one of the top 100 speeches. While Obama isn’t on that list for any of his speeches.
She just didn’t stand up for herself and sexism during her Presidential because she wouldn’t be able to unring the MSM bell that would have painted her as weak.
Bingo.
Hillary went after Shuster with a vengenace when they attacked Chelsea during the primary. As Sarah Palin is doing now. But Hillary Clinton has nothing to prove to the world when it comes to defending the rights of women and children. She’s spent her whole life fighting these abuses.
Go ask the Prez where “his” outrage is, the father of two young daughters. He’s standing in the bully pulpit right now, not Hillary [although she should be].
I love it when people claim to be HRC supporters but take every opportunity to cut her down.
Cut me a break!
Things that make you go huuuum?
Exactly, AC!
double ditto~
So, thank you Larry Johnson for providing the contact information for CBS/ Letterman sponsors.
This is it. This is IT. We MUST email, call and write the sponsors and complain. If we let this go, it will continue to be ok. It will never slow down and it will never stop. It will stunt every future woman politician. This has to be taken seriously. People have to take out the time to take action. Don’t be lazy or complacent. Don’t let it go. Complaining on blogs alone is not enough.
It has to be a sustained effort. Commit to taking action (via emails, phone calls, snail mail) for one month. I will commit to daily action for one month (at least) until I see *something* happen.
Take Action here:
http://pumapac.org/2009/06/11/pig-and-prowl/
And here, scroll down and see each headline:
http://hillbuzz.org/
Have any of you sat and thought Hillary encourage this kind of behavior in these Obama supporters? She was subjected to such and what did she do take it and still turned around and asked people to over look that and vote Obama.
Woman need to stand up, and don’t settle for crap, but if you are so caught up on the trappings of office I guess you are subject to accept anything, I hope Sarah Plain is different and don’t care a hoot about elections or office and stand her ground in defense of her kids.
This is a quality that strikes deep respect and admiration–so deep in fact, that it is rooted in our animal nature: we rightly acknowledge and revere that determination of a mother to protect her young throughout the animal kingdom. And Hillary certainly was protective when Chelsea was threatened. Hooray for Sarah (and her husband, Todd)!
Letterman must GO! If we on the the left don’t insist upon his dismissal, then we have no right to complain about any injustice. Letterman’s response to the furor only underscores his blatant contempt for the Palins and his utter blindness to his own sexism. Misogyny is bigotry—even when practiced by quasi-liberals like Letterman. Bigotry is reprehensible no matter who practices it and how it is expressed. How long are we going to let the cultural elite taint the airwaves with their hateful bias?
Fact is, if Letterman was talking about Bristol in his ill taste joke, he would have said her name. Letterman knew full well it was Willow at the game and did not mention a name because had he said Willow’s name, the TV Censors would have blocked such a joke from airing!
It is full knowledge after the rude, disgusting and vile goings on that started a couple of years ago in CBS’s Big Brother with that pig who won it and his (underaged at the time of taping) daughter on the show, how CBS’s places ratings and low form of human actions and statements above deceny and morals. So long as Les Moonves gets his high ratings, no low is low enough as long as it brings the ratings along with it!
CBS learned then that smut, vile, degrading and narcisism sells ratings! Sad state when mainstream media sinks lower that Larry Flint in broadcasting garbage!
Fact of the matter is Letterman knew full well it was Willow at the game and not Bristol.
Fact is in the past Letterman had no problem using Bristol’s name when making jokes of her. His avoiding using a name this time was to avoid TV Censors from blocking that joke involving a minor in such a manner!
Will CBS do anything about Letterman, nope, don’t forget, CBS started this degrading of women a few years back when that disgusting, rude, vile, tattooed 40’something hippy and his (underage at the time of the show) daughter were on Big Brother and won the show. It is all about ratings and Les Moonves has learned then that degrading and vile acts towards women sells ratings and thus sells advertising space!
So think anything will come of Letterman, don’t hold your breath!!
Someone at CBS knew the joke was about Willow since they deleted that joke, & only that joke, from Dave’s monologue transcript that’s printed in the NYT
http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2009/06/cbs-altered-letterman-transcript-not-new-york-times.html
all good and well, but where is Hillary on this? She was a recipient of sexism, but where is she now. I didn’t hearany comment from her about this?
More to the point, where is Michelle Obama?
She’s our first lady now, and should speak for ALL daughters against this gutter level crap.
Is she still growing vegetables for photo-ops? Shopping in Paris?
Oh Michelle…….time for you to stand for something REALLY REALLY significant.
Looking for new earrings and expensive pumps or giving a nasty look to the French first lady. I can assure you she is not working in the White House garden.
I don’t give a shit about Michelle Obama, she is where ever her husband is. I want to hear from Hillary, who I supported and whose own daughter was once used as the butt of jokes. If she won’t stand up against this idiot Letterman than I don’t know
Why do you want to hear from Hillary. Doesn’t.t Obama’s teleprompter work. It’s more his duty than Hillary’s After all he has now been anointed as God.
Seems to me Barack Obama has the bully pulpit at the moment, Bell. As for Hillary Clinton? She has nothing to prove to anyone. She has spent her entire life fighting for the rights of women and children, here and around the world. And when her daughter was attacked? She fought back like a tiger. I admire Hillary for that.
Sarah Palin has every right to do the same thing. She’s in very good company.
I think Hillary may be working as SOS and maybe unlike Obama she didn’t hear it yet since she is in many different countries. she isn’t like micle or even obama flitting around partying
she’s just getting back to the states from a very successful trip to Mongolia and will be in NY & Canada tomorrow.
Why would it be the First Lady’s place to appoint herself an official critic of late-night talk show hosts? Start down that road and there will be no end to the things she’ll be expected to weigh in on. I’m able to form my own opinions about propriety, thank you very much.
With Sarah Palin it’s a different story. She has every right and every reason to speak out on gatuitous, crude off-color cracks made on the public airwaves that were directed at herself or her family, and clearly has the high ground on this one. Letterman doesn’t owe the Palins an explanation or clarification; he owes them a direct public apology. We’ll see how much class he actually has by whether or not it’s forthcoming.
I could be wrong.(ive been wrong before)
but i think Laura Bush would have said something..
I agree. Didn’t Laura Bush say something to help Meechelle during the GE about the “For the first time in my life I’m proud of my country…”? She reached out to help a woman in the other party, Meechelle doesn’t reach out to help anyone.
Well Bell. Just have to get in a dig on Hillary, huh? When it counyed most, Hillary showed her contempt for the sexism actions and words of people in her party by refusing to engage in them against Sarah Palin even while she was campaigning for Obama (the one I despise most although I am an AA). She let them know in no uncertain terms that she would not engage in bashing Sarah. As usual she caught much flak from the so-called liberal wing of the party. So why don’t you just STFU about Hillary’s resposibilitiy. What about the average citizen’s responsibility?
I never put a dig in against Hillary, I just want her to respond to this because she is a woman and a mother. Everyone that is a woman and a mother should call for Letterman”s head(whatever head you prefer)
what have you done about it??? huh?
That right this is what it is really about but people of Bells ilk enjoy needling Hillary.
Isn’t Michelle a woman and a mother according to Bell standards but it’s always about the Hillary hate.
you are assuming to much
You wrote it live with it.
she is busy doing her job.
I didn’t see Sec of State Colin Powell or Condi Rice stop doing their jobs to state the case for or against any Bush Twins media dustup.
What a lame suggestion.
If I was Hillary I would keep my mouth shut. She handled her onslaught of misogny by herself and so can Palin. The both of them are strong. I am sure privately Hillary is against this, but she has the ability to consider the source and blow it off at least publically. Privately I am sure it irritates her.
sure keep your mouth shut about about comments that justify rape will get us somewhere. Bull, it sets us back to the dark ages
so where did my last comment end up?
I don’t like Sarah — even a little bit. And when you put yourself out and become a public figure, maybe you have to expect a certain amount of this nonsense. But not your children. They aren’t public figures and this was just a vile attack on them (either one).
Finally, a true mobilization on the internet about this issue. Thank you very much for No Q’s contributions. With the email addresses, it takes little time to write a (respectful) note.
Raping children and women is not ha ha. Letterman’s constant denigration of Palin is obsessive. And definitely not haha.
And as for women going along with this sort of thing–appalling, whether a conservative or a liberal woman is being maligned, there are no excuses for such…uh…slutty behavior.
I have two daughters, both serving in the AF, and I don’t give a shit if it is conservative or so called “progressive” who make remarks like Letterman did, they would have to deal with me, period. I just don’t understand how so called progressive women can stand and not openly condemn “jokes” like this
-I just don’t understand how so called progressive women can stand and not openly condemn “jokes” like this-
Because they aren’t progressive, they are simply the lackeys, tools used by the system to legitimize their misogyny.
they should leave the children alone.all of them..
I tend to agree with Larry. The MSM and the Washington establishment are scared shitless of Sarah Palin. She has a genuine, folksy, empathetic charisma that they just don’t know how to handle.
Yes, she made some mistakes being thrust (and handled) into the national spotlight. But with some training and discipline she could become a VERY formidable national politician.
What Letterman’s repeated insults lend credence to is the right’s contention that the left is immoral. With the left, anything they say about the right is within bounds, regardless of how vile it is to most ordinary citizens. And I am ashamed to say that I once embraced the left with full arms.
And I agree with a comment above; just why hasn’t MO said anything?
Perhaps the worst of all of this is the laughter from the audience to these denigrating insults.
Letterman IS the joke!
-be ivy league or have a silver spoon shoved up your ass to be a leader-
Certain age group of the US corporate and political leadership seems to be an ivy league/upper crust university ghetto. Diversity is not just in gender, ethnicity, race, religion, it is also in educational background from different universities with different schools of thought. With no new schools of thought, there are no new, fresh ideas of change and innovation just a continuum of an elitist oligarchy that becomes monarchical in mind and thought.
Very good point. It can be likened to inbreeding.
Just recently Billy Ray Cyrus had to smack down Jaime fox for sayign vulgar things about Myle Cyrus. No nder his movie did badly at the box office.
I am sick of these Old Hollywood male celebrities preying on teenagers.
We need to speak out. Sarah did the right thing and show her outrage at Dave Letterman.
Interesting and overdue:
MSNBC’S Brzezinski Breaks Cover, Says Media’s Palin Hatred ‘Rabid’
Wow–fantastic list, very printable–thank you so much! Hillbuzz has also been great about passing along such info.
I was also stunned that Letterman gave the lame excuse that he was referring to the 18 year old, not the 14 year old, in the first joke. Does that make rape more acceptable? It made things worse, imo. How incredibly dumb is he?
Bravo Larry!
The Left surely must realize by now that when something like this happens, it only serves to galvanize support for Sarah Palin while making them look even more hypocritical, small-minded and mean-spirited. They essentially elevate her and demean themselves.
This is one tough lady and as a woman, I so greatly appreciate that she’s holding the boorish bore Littleman accountable for his disgusting remarks. In the nearly 5 decades I’ve been tuned in to politics, I’ve never seen ANYTHING like the treatment Sarah Palin and her family have had to endure. Like so many others here have stated, it’s obvious the Left are threatened by her — she’s as charismatic as their hero is and they can’t handle it. No doubt Republicans jockeying for position have it in for her too but they don’t have to get their hands dirty since Democrats are bent on destroying her.
While I’ve had reservations about some of her political views, she’d still be much better a POTUS than Comrade Obama. I’m absolutely sick of of what’s become of the Left. Even more, I’m ashamed of the selective feminism I’m witnessing. I can’t tell you how sad it makes me.
The NeoLeft are just as rabid and out of control as the NeoCons–different name same mindset, both crazy.
I commented on Salon’s site today about hate groups and whether they can lead to violence. well, they were talking about right wing nutsif they can incite violence and I then mentioned KO’s and MSNBC and CNN different hatefilled ,thre atening comments about Hillary and also about Sarah ……..then one of the regulars proceeded to attack me and say If I knew anything about femminism , that sarah wasn’t one and I didn’t know anything about it..REALLY I was talking about hate but then I mentioned the left-media so I was wrong {in his veiw} Oh and I thought I am left just not their left
I’ve had the sam thoughts since October 2007. I still consider myself a liberal.
actually patience i noted that palin’s comments were made in such a way as to raise the ire of women in general. i applaud her for it.
Letterman’s ratings are getting killed by Conan O’ brien and I think this was all about his ratings! He knew from the get go the jokes were sleazy and is probably thrilled about all the publicity. When you wrestle in the mud with pigs they love it and you just get all muddy! I never watched him and I certainly won’t know. The joke was uncalled for. Would love to see if he had used one of Obama’s daughters as the girl in the joke!!!!
“Letterman’s ratings are getting killed by Conan O’ brien and I think this was all about his ratings!”
That’s interesting. Leno’s last show was the epitome of class. In his farewell, he said reporters asked him what his ‘legacy’ was. First, he laughed it off. “Legacy? It’s just a TV show.” Then he thought about it. He mentioned all the marriages among the Tonight Show crew in 17 years. Then he brought out every kid born to his crew and writing staff in 17 years and gathered them on stage.
Contrast that to the sickness Letterman represents. I hope Conan buries him.
Thank you, Larry, for covering this. However, I have to correct one mistake you made right up front.
Wrong. Sexually demeaning women and girls is never OK. Not even for hypocrites. Not for any women. NOT EVER. Sexist “jokes” are verbal rape, and rape is never justified. Punishment should fit the crime. The punishment for hypocrisy is being called out as a hypocrite.
If I can’t make my point without sexist attacks, then I have no legitimate point to make. Besides, if you think men who enjoy degrading women make a distinction between those who deserve it and those who don’t, think again. If you make it OK to target one woman that way, it becomes OK to target any of us.
I’m stealing this idea from another commenter because it’s so perfect:
Think of sexism like a virus. If you want to rid the world of polio, you don’t only treat your friends. You treat everyone. Even the most unrepentent hypocrite should get the vaccine because we can’t suffer polio to live anywhere or it will just breed and spread. Saving a vial of polio virus just in case someone “deserves” it would be monstrous and would endanger everyone.
It’s that way with sexism. Stamp it out everywhere, or it will come back and infect you.
*****A
Thank you, Adrienne.
We’ll have to disagree on this. What I am talking about would be making a joke about Phyllis Schafly, for example, if we discovered that she was running an escort business on the side. In a case like that sexual jokes about a woman’s behavior can be justified because it has a context.
Let’s agree that those situations are very rare and very unlikely. So at the end of the day you’ll find me on your side.
Our whole family have been Democrats for life. But after the last year or so they have cut down every decent person starting with Hillary whom we love.
We voted for Sarah and McCain and are proud of it. I pray for Sarah and her family. She was raised by good solid parents and I think she will do just fine taking these horrible people on like Letterman and the media!! God Bless you Sarah! Her boy is over seas fighting like our boy!! Please pray for them and
all the rest of our military.
Not only was the comment horrible, as all comments made of this nature, equally disturbing is the attempted justification, and obfuscation. Some things being said, are never funny. They do however reveal, a cruelty in the humor of the “funny” person. There is a celebration in the harming of another. It is passed off to be humor, yet clearly there is a need for the “hucksters” to generate an image and a type, thus be able to box a human being (yet again) into a category that appears all too sub-human, and therefore non-threatening or non-intelligent as well as a means to remove the targets credibility. It is done under the guise of humor, which it clearly is not. Red Skelton and Carol Burnett are funny, in a self-deprecating style. Johnny Carson was intelligent and funny. David Letterman is cruel, intentionally, trying to hide behind the title of comedian. He is simply a vulgar man.
Read my mind.
Great comedians used to use situational comedy–the ones like Letterman are nothing but bullies that make fun of others. Some of the best never said a word — Charlie Chaplin. WC Fields made fun of fish but not people, his humor was what he did to himself.
Enjoyed reading your comment as well as many others. Good night all.
ANimal rights
The writers for Jay Leno (another pig) and Lettercrap are young, inexperienced, clueless, misogynist males — real ‘cool’ and hip, or so they think. There’s a REVOLUTION coming and was pleased to see Gov.Palin taking off where Hillary left off…
Excellent post Larry, thank you.
And she sure shined with all she is today on..the Today Show.
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/31304942#31304942
Wow, Linda. Sarah was very impressive. Of course, the MSM will continue to try their best to make a sow’s ear out of a silk purse. Thanks for the link.
you’re most welcome. Definitely fun to see the Dem’s squirm with such a straight shooter.
Don’t forget, don’t just contact them once. Keep at it.
New York Lawmaker Calls on CBS to Fire Letterman for Palin Comments http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,526055,00.html
I especially like this link, because the lawmaker is speaking about the comments against Palin’s daughter AND Palin. A lot of what I’ve heard is only focusing on the jokes about the daughter. There’s been general rule in politics to leave the kids out of it. Sometimes people break the rule, but for the most part it’s respected.
So it’s good that people are addressing the child abuse insinuations, but if that’s all that’s addressed, we’re still stuck with the horrible sexism we observed this last election cycle, which I feel has only been growing (probably due in part to that election sexism). So I was glad to see this lawmaker hold Letterman accountable for both (especially since his child rape stuff flows from general misogyny in the first place).
I agree with this!
When Hillary responded to David Shuster’s vile remark — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn4w3O_w7Uk&feature=channel_page — Shuster was suspended.
Letterman deserves at least that, but firing him would be better.
I especially like Rush Limbaugh’s comment when explaining that the Chelsea Clinton/White House dog episode really was a screw-up and not intentioonal. He said something to the effect that it doesn’t take talent to malign someone’s children, and “I have talent”. BINGO, Letterman.
Larry Johnson,
I do not accept David “Limp Dick” Letterman’s limp dick excuse for an apology…..He doesn’t seem to be able to figure out that it doesn’t matter if he were speaking of a 14, 18 or 28 year old female….His remarks were beyond “out of line.”
There were other parties involved in this scandal other than the Palins and Letterman and what boggles my mind is the lack of input from either one of them.
If Alex Rodriguez were any kind of a man at all, he would DEMAND an on-air heartfelt apology from Letterman, after all Dave insinuated that Alex was a pedophile and a rapist.
Is there such a thing as a Flight Attendant Union?….I’m pretty sure there is and if so, where is the absolute outrage from them.
I am trying to start an Internet campaign to force Alex Rodriguez to get involved in hopes that he will do the right thing and hold Letterman’s feet to the fire…..Justice has not been served on Letterman yet and a high profile celebrity like Rodriguez could cause Dave some serious grief….I doubt that Alex will want to get involved since he has a reputation as a “player” (I don’t mean baseball), but there are ways of forcing it on him….Never take a knife to a gun fight, meaning disregard for whether he wants to get involved or not… All it would take is the right people confronting him about it on camera.
“Mr. Rodriguez, do you condone child rape or have you ever been involved in such an act?….Alex, are you aware that David Letterman, on national TV, portrayed you as a child rapist?…..Why would he do that, sir?…..Mr. Rodriguez, do you fell like Mr. Letterman’s remarks portraying you as a pedophile and a rapist were out of line and do you feel like he owes you an apology?
If he is confronted with these type of questions enough times and from the right people enough times he will have no choice, but to confront Letterman and demand that Dave try to right this wrong.
I know, I know, these may be considered dirty tactics, but not really….He was, after all, portrayed by Letterman just as I wrote it above…..As far as I’m concerned he has a duty here to speak out.
I have not heard anyone from the MSM or even the Internet, for that matter, request that Rodriguez come forward and denounce Letterman.
I am going to be contacting conservative pundits from the MSM and Internet in regards to Mr. Rodriguez’s deafening silence on this important matter.
The rampant sexism, misogyny and downright nastiness from the left has gone on for far too long and it’s time for that crap to STOP.
The effing gloves are OFF!!!!
*********************************************
I ask of you and your blog viewers to assist me by joining in an effort to contact anyone who would be willing to help in getting Mr. Rodriguez to come forward….We need some people within the media to confront him…..I’m sure Alex probably has a fan club type web site….I’m also sure that the same goes for the NY Yankees.
Let’s not forget about the flight attendants either….I’m sure they would be more willing to speak out.
It’s time for there to be consequences for one’s own words and actions.
First 3 commercials on Letterman tonight:
Microsoft
Ford
Best Buy
DO NOT SUPPORT THEM
Good. I buy tons of electronics from Best Buy. I’ll send them a list of what I’ve bought, then tell them I won’t buy any more. I was just going over there tomorrow to buy a spare laptop battery. I’ll find it somewhere else.
Best Buy shares the blame for putting a man who has child rape fantasies on television.
Shoot! I just explained to my son (at the checkout) why we could not buy anything from M&M/Mars. But I was going to Best Buy… Oh, well, I like your idea about telling them what I would have bought.
Second series of commercials on Letterman
Lexus
Icy Hot Medicated Roll
Centrum vitamins
Showtime
Chase Bank
Macy’s
Lexus (again)
DO NOT SUPPORT THEM
excellent reporting and rapid response!
Someone needs to speak out to the flight attendants and show them what Letterman thinks of them!
Then the flight attendants need to refuse to serve any actor/actress who is flying to NYC to do the Letterman Show for their approval of Letterman considering flight attendants as looking slutty!
All the airlines who provide advertising, special rates and favors to CBS should refuse to provide anything to CBS for condoning Lettermans view of their employees (flight attendants) appearances!
This is the time also that the Unions need to step up and boycott Letterman, not only the flight attendants union, but all unions connected with CBS, since Letterman considers flight attendants as slutty, what is his views on electricians, camera operators, sound techs and so on? Aren’t unions suppose to protect the injustices made against members and other fellow union charters?
I’ve yet to read a post where the point has been made that not all “flight attendants” are female. Just imagine the double insult that male flight attendants must have experienced by Letterman’s insensitive and abyssmal attempts at humor. And it’s a sad symptom of gender prejudice that nobody (besides me) seems to have noticed this slight. This gender prejudice is one of the reasons that there is a shortage of nurses, male nurses are relatively rare because of a long held gender stereotype that scares most of them off. Sometimes sexism works in both directions.
sorry, OT, no one uses open threads!: Ahmedinejad has been declared victor over Mousavi; Mousavi also claiming victory. Election was said to be much closer than votes show, election fraud likely. http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/library/news/iran/2009/iran-090612-voa03.htm
Third commercial break on Letterman:
T-mobile
Cadillac
KY jelly (some weird product)
Rogaine
Imagine That (Eddie Murphy movie–another weird-o)
Geico
DO NOT SUPPORT THEM
DO IT DAILY. Takes only 2 minutes.

SAMPLE LETTER (H/T firedavidletterman.com)
Dear Late Show Advertisers:
As an advertiser on the David Letterman show, you endorse his point of view, I am appalled that your company supports the rape of young girls.
On June 8th 2009 Mr. Letterman “joked” that a female Governor of the United States is “slutty” and worse still, “joked” about her 14 year-old daughter and statutory rape by an adult baseball player. He continued his slander of this young girl during his June 9th show, likening her to a prostitute. I refuse to buy products from a company who supports such a vulgar, reprehensible attitude toward women and girls.
Shame on you.
Thanks Kat. I just sent an email to:
stephen.schoof@capitalone.com
I have another credit card & will be using it from now on unless CapitolOne does the right thing.
right; i seriously wish they would can letterman and give his show to ellen.
Sorry, forgot to add great post! Can’t wait to see your next post!
Blatant Anti-Palin Bias in the Liberal Media: A Collection (172 Cases) http://scottthong.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/blatant-anti-palin-bias-in-the-liberal-media-a-collection/
Sarah used a bazooka when all she needed was a pocket knife. Her “reaction to David” tour makes her look like a bigger fool than her “bailout would help with health care reform” interview with Couric.
Anything to bash the victim–how Letterman of you!
Women hating Women it’s the latest rage.
I thought she was great;at ease and stayed incontrol of the conversation while keeping it on what is the most important thing: raising well adjusted young women. Can you imagine how these stupid comments of Letterman on national TV effect a 14 year old girl’s psyche?
His writers are immature goons.
TRISHA
Grow up, sweetie and cure yourlself of your socially regressive, Sexist sympathies. If you are a woman–which I doubt–and if you have any daughter(god forbid!) you should try to get a job in Obama’s Speechwriters office, or better still, sweetie, go work for PLAYBOY! You’d love, it! Open your eyes and see how Palin’s whole family was victimized. SAme way HIllary and her daughter were treated. If you don’t acknowledge that, go work for Letterman’s writing dept. You’d fit right in, you regressive, dangerous person….
She’s a victim of her own stupidity.
what do you mean by “her own stupidity” ?
I didn’t see any stupidity in the clip.
Netflix had a commercial toward the end of the Letterman show. I am a subscriber and I called them this morning 1-866-716-0414 to tell them I was going to cancel my subscription over this. They bill your credit card & I am paid up through 6/25. That gives them a few days to send me an email addressing this situation, or I am gone. I was polite, and the lady answering the phone said she would relay this to her supervisor.
If you are a Netflix subscriber, then I encourage you to do the same. Thanks
On another blog, I stated my disgust at the Letterman jokes and was called every name in the book for defending Palin’s right to defend her children. I was called a right winger too. It was completely obvious that these attacks were coming from some young simple minds who don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground. It burns me up. The site was Digby. Amazing these people call themselves progressive. They also attacked the blog’s owner. Who are these people? I don’t recognize this party. But it was these minds that ole Dave is trying to attract. Are they supposed to be hip and cool?
Reading your comment, Glennmcgahee, I am beginning to realize that if by some chance the next presidential election pits Obama against Palin, it is going to be the most vicious campaign we have ever known.
Glenn…
There’s nothing progressive about Digby. Other than NO QUARTER and Confluence’s Riverdaughter, I don’t rely on ‘professional’ journalism to be either object or fair. This is largely an Entertainment Media world. Don’;t forget GE (the nuclear co. that Obama–not HRc–voted in favor yet no one discusses!) owns MSNBC/NBC and military aircraft makers Westingouse OWN OBAMA!
I have yet to see more despicably inhumane treatment of female political candidates for the Presidency and vice Presidency than I had the misfortune to witness, incredibly, in the so-called “unbiased press, TV and cable media” in the past year!
Letterman has no excuse for the misogynist, deeply hateful comments on Gov.Palin’s daughter and herself. It is I find the left-wingernut commentators that have been most hateful in their treatment of women.
It is interesting to note that Palin herself in the beginning of her campaign had mentioned that Hillary Clinton should “take it from the media as she’s in politics”. It seems that now, this talented, experienced (more executive experience in her resume/s footnotes than in Obama’s highly marketed whole opportunistic life)young Governor has mercifully changed her mind and seems to be leading the Hillary-inpired fight for Women’s rights to be included under Human rights where they belong! It takes a personal hurt to see the world and society more objectively–and change it! Thank you Gov. Palin!!
And THANKS TO LARRY FOR THIS POST! With men like him, whose actions show that he truly believen in Humanr rights including women’s rights, and with Palin’s recent comments on Self-Esteem of girls and young women….this world is getting better and better….and less OBAMYOPIC!!!!
ARCH200
Your Obamyopia and clueless Misogynist commentary entitles you to a free pass at the LETTERMAN show!
You’d be right at home. And if you are a male (hopefully not an incestuous pedophile) please bring your teenage daughter for some real hot fun, eh, asshole! GROW UP, moron! It’s jerks like you that have kept SoS Hillary Clinton and Gov.Palin away from the Presidency–and, by implication, imbecile, your own daughters 20 years from now!
I witnessed the attacks against Hillary in the 90s, the attacks against her by the so-called “progressives” last year, the attacks against Gov Palin after that, and now this! When will it end? Never, unless we push back, and push back hard, and keep pushing. Letterman and the left are using the same tactics they used in the primaries….they assume we will give up and this will be old news in a week and long forgotten (get over it right?)…..We need to pick just a couple of sponsors and not let up. Call them every day, email, FAX, every day until they get that we are not giving up until something is done.
I must protest, too! I am voicing your concerns….and Hillary was twiced burned at the stake. In the 90s by the right-wing nuts who accused her of just about every horrendous deed you can think of, including murders; and now during the Primary, the Left-Wing “Progressive?” nutjobs.
I’ll never forget Obama’s misleading, slanderous campaign with Harry and Louse ads running and Hillary holding them in her hands, obviously very very upset, justifiably, and calling out to The Sharia Law Messiah:
‘SHAME ON YOU, BARACK, SHAME ON YOU’ for misrepresenting my views on Health Care…
Bush stole the election from Gore 2000.
Obama’s media campaign stole the nomination from HIllary 2008. But there’ll be Hell to pay for Obummer….I read “Underestimating Hillary” in the SALON and I was delighted….women are comin’ round to their (lost last year) senses! And with Gov. Palin’s refusal to take the crap from misogynist deeply sexist LetterShit, we are gonna have some REAL CHANGE.Amen.
THANK YOU, LARRY, FOR REMEMBERING THE DESPICABLE COMMENTS ABOUT CHELSEA UTTERED BY THE TUCKER-JERK ABOVE! Palin is equally disturbed about the totally inappropriate, deeply sexist remarks against her daughter by Letterman–a fool who should have fired his writers and apologized without excuses…
This post tells it like it is! Put it on the Front Page of Washington Post and the N.Y.Times….and ABC, the only station that does not allow these woman-haters a free ride!!
Thank you for this Post, Larry! The Truth shall win out and Letterman and his sexist pack of wolves will be kicked out one day by the Self Esteem of Young Girls and Women who are getting “mad as Hell and on’t take it any more”…
As I said in another post
I found this to be a Very Undignified Demeaning comment to make about anyone…male or female…adult or child….
It was even more degrading since it was a underage child…..
It became even more inappropriately mortifying when Letterman tried to excuse his joke due to a mistake in which daughter he thought it was.(Age did not make it any better).
No matter who the comment had been directed to age, gender or otherwise…Whether the person was 1 to 99 in age, male or female, it was a VERY Appallingly Degrading joke.
For anyone to say that it was an ok comment on national TV dependant upon the age or whom it was, is actually putting themselves down.
IMO, what MATTERS is how the hell would any of us feel if WE were the butt of these disgusting, tacky, immature, raunchy remarks. They are NOT jokes. Jokes are funny. In no way, shape, or form were these remarks funny.
Now, imagine being either Bristol or Willow and watching and listening to this idiot in the body of a 62 yr old male (note that I did NOT say “62 yr old man”) say these things about YOU.
Thank God those girls have a Father who respects women and shows them what a REAL man is and how they behave.
Letterman was wronger than wrong but for God’s sake – he’s rude about everyone. He doesn’t play favorites like the vicious jerk Limbaugh.
She won’t drop the subject and is, IMO, clearly using it was a springboard at her daughter’s expense? The “joke” was cheap and nasty but it was also clearly about Bristol. Palin had every right to be upset but she put an indelible image in people’s minds of her 14 year old as sexual object.
If Palin is teachable, she is on a slow curve. Maybe if she cared as much for policy as she does winking in a debate, it would go a little faster.
The only thing smaller than DL’s scrotum sac is a praying mantis egg sac …
I meant to add ..Plain was “ambushed” by Couric??????
Katie Couric all but held her hand and walked her though the questions. I’ve never seen an interviewer so soft-spoken when asking so not-so-hard questions of a Vice Presidential candidate. Okay, she didn’t coo like Sean Hannity but she was professional and kind.
Palin couldn’t have been more unprepared and the easier the question, the more flustered she seemed.
Delusional?
the letter “u” right there in the word pointing to you.
Couric doesn’t get a crack at the guys who got elected, and when she does, she asks about how they “feel.” As if ….
Hi there folks!
Regarding Bristol Palin having a baby at 18 years of age. The most desirable age to give birth is 19 in medical terms -both for the baby & mother.
In most societies the ideal age of first babies is 19.
So in Bristol’s case she is the realm of human biological health.
And lets face it – the baby was conceived as a result of actual sex -woohoo -dont we remember that!
Plus the baby was absolutely gorgeous .
letterman is rather ugly.
OK, I sent out a lot of emails & phone calls to 800# to companies that advertise on The Tonight Show. I guess Netflix, Capitol One, General Motors, Ford, Nissan, Intel must think I am crazy–but one did respond. It was Olive Garden:
“We understand your concern about Mr. Letterman’s inappropriate comments. Olive Garden screens all network television programs and we plan schedules accordingly, especially in regard to shows with objectionable content. Some shows, like The David Letterman Show, are taped on a daily basis and there is not an opportunity to review the content prior to airing. The content of the dialogue on the June 8th show is not consistent with Olive Garden’s standards and values. We have joined many of our valued guests in voicing our concern to CBS, and we will adjust our plans accordingly as we have done in the past when such situations occur. Your feedback will certainly be taken into consideration as we review our future advertising schedule.
Again, thank you for contacting us with your comments, and we hope you will continue to think of Olive Garden as a place to visit with your family and friends.
Sherri Bruen
Guest Relations Manager”
I appreciate their response. They had the guts to email that they contacted CBS. I now will go spend my $ their again (they also own Red Lobster).
As for the others, well I am still waiting. Netflix will see me cancel my monthly automatic credit card payment in about a week. Capitol One can already see that I have stopped charging as of last Friday–using my other card. As for the others, I guess they think I will forget. Hell no I will not forget!
The companies I mentioned above are ones I have been a customer and/or a stockholder.
There are many other companies such as Best Buy, Lexus, Mazda, Microsoft, Samsung and Showtime which I did not send anything to them because I don’t use their product, service or just did not have the time. So, put the pressure on them too & there are others that I did not list.
whois…
Thanks for sharing Olive Garden’s response. I now know where I am having lunch tomorrow.
Wow! Thanks for sticking with this and getting back to NQ with some results! This is heartfelt & snarkfree: Hurray for you!
(this is a response to whoisjohngalt above–didn’t nest)
Golly a lot of folks undies get all bunched up when it is their pet monkey getting made fun of. The conservative response is always to claim victimhood then try to lynch the person who made them uncomfortable, in this case Letterman. After decades of cruel jokes at the expense of Chelsea Clinton by McCain and his brain, Rush Limbaugh, as well as the abuse heaped upon Hillary Clinton, Sotomayor, Ann Richards, and seemingly every other woman of accomplishment this outrage is decades late and many euros short. Pathetic, in fact, in light of the unfortunate truth that the Palin family has used their daughters as political shills and promotional tools repeatedly, while covering up shenanigans that might be perceived as family unfriendly, like throwing the baby daddy under the bus after the election was over. The hypocrisy and cynical maliciousness of the internet complainers here is just another indicator of how stupid the internet allows us to be and why we should anticipate the coming of our new Chinese overlords.
Hey, Dick Hertz it is a free country (for a little while anyway) & I can buy products from whomever I please. I just choose not to buy from those who advertise on The Tonight Show. You are making this a bigger thing than it really is–kind of like your name.
“A verbal rape.”
A little melodramatic there, Larry, doncha think? Or can I say that your haircut is “a tonsorial anal probe,” and we’ll call it even.
Geez, you mouth-breathers and your phony outrage. I swear!
And to all you out there like Whoisjohngalt: I hope you’re not conducting your email carpetbombings on company time. Because that would be theft… excuse me, that would be Going Galt…
Maroons. The lot of you!
“And to all you out there like Whoisjohngalt: I hope you’re not conducting your email carpetbombings on company time. Because that would be theft”
No, John Galt is a producer. He works hard and makes $ for his company. Excuse me, I thought I could buy products from whomever I please. If you want to support David Letterman, then buy products from his sponsors. Anyway, thanks for your concern.
Letterman’s Palin Joke Costs CBS an Advertiser, Spawns Campaign for His Firing

David Letterman’s comments about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and one of her daughters has prompted a hotel chain to pull its advertising on CBS’ website — and spawned a campaign to fire the Late Show host that includes a planned protest outside his studio.
Embassy Suites, part of the Hilton Hotels Corp., pulled advertising on CBS’ site because of complaints, company spokeswoman Kendra Walker told TVGuide.com. The company was not an advertiser on Letterman’s show.
“We received lots of e-mails from concerned guests and we assessed that the statement that he made was offensive enough to our guests and prospective guests that we elected to take the ads down,” Walker said. She declined to release the cost of the ads.
CBS declined to comment Tuesday.
Letterman joked last week about Palin’s daughter being “knocked up” by Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. He later clarified that he was referring to 18-year-old Bristol Palin — who, he said “was knocked up.” But the Palin family and Letterman critics said he was referring to the governor’s 14-year-old daughter, Willow, who attended the Yankees game with her mother.
“It’s a disgraceful comment and it needs to be stopped,” said Michael Patrick Leahy, one of the organizers of the “Fire David Letterman” campaign. “It is totally inappropriate and disgraceful for a 62-year-old man to sexually insult a 14-year-old girl, period. These comments are more egregious than those of Don Imus, and CBS fired him for those comments.”
Leahy, who also helped organize the anti-tax “tea parties” in cities across the country earlier this year, estimated anywhere from 50 to 300 people would attend a protest planned outside Letterman’s studio in New York City on Tuesday.
The campaign has also urged advertisers, including Embassy Suites, to pull their ads.
excellent breeze, EXCELLENT!!
DON’T LET UP THE PRESSURE
THIS IS FOR ALL WOMEN,
NOT JUST THE PALINS!!!
My response to a Nissan email is below. By the way, they make nice cars but they are not easy to repair and the replacement parts are outrageous. GM cars are much more economical to repair:
Ms. Gonzales, your answer is totally unacceptable to me. I got a much better response from Olive Garden who actually contacted CBS to express their concern. Hilton pulled their ads from CBS.
I will NEVERRRRRRRRRR EVERRRRRRRRR buy another Infiniti or Nissan again. I find this regrettable especially since I also own 1900 shares or your misguided company. Your response will be posted on an Internet site where people are following this story.

I own 1900 shares of Nissan stock & my wife has a G35. You need to stop advertising on the Late Show or there will never be another Nissan in my future. David Letterman’s jokes about 14 year old girls having sex with older men is sick. Stop this now! Your company is on a boycott list for good reason.
Victory!

I am going to the Olive Garden or Red Lobster (both owned by the same company) soon. Hopefully more to follow.
Southwest Airlines drop Letterman:

Whether Letterman’s jokes were tasteless, constituted slander or justify his having a little “time out” from the network, the fact remains that remarks were simply horseshit.
Too bad Todd Palin didn’t poke him in the bazoo.
(For those who contend that violence accomplishes nothing I submit that there is nothing quite a little man-to-man shot to the chops to sweeten up a bad mouth. And, imagine that Lou Brown had had the cojones to take a ball bat to OJ the FIRST time Mr. Football slapped his daughter around.)
