Secretary Clinton Assists NC Woman In Reuniting With Her Abducted Daughter (In Egypt)

Well, those of us who have been following Secretary Clinton’s career know that she is a hard worker, who goes about doing the work that needs doing without the glare of the lights and cameras. I heard about this story from a friend of mine who lives in the same neck of the woods as the the woman trying to reunite with her daughter. She said it raised Secretary Clinton up in her eyes even more when she learned of what she had done to help this woman.

Here’s the story:

Waynesville Woman Finally Reunites With Abducted Daughter

Janet Greer’s moment finally arrived Wednesday — 12 years after her daughter was abducted by her father and taken to Egypt.

With Chris Cuomo from ABC’s “Good Morning America” at her side, the Waynesville woman entered her daughter’s world, wrapped her arms around her, touched her and smelled her hair.

She shed tears that never stopped pouring from years of living with a broken heart.

That heart broke when Greer’s ex-boyfriend — who had a court-allowed weekend visit with his then-3-year-old daughter Sarah in 1997, never returned with her. Instead, Magdy Elgohary got on a plane with Sarah in tow and flew to Egypt.

Authorities in Hawaii, where Greer and Elgohary were living at the time, issued warrants charging him with felony kidnapping.

But Sarah “Dowsha” Elgohary’s family refused to let Greer to see her own child. Even after the Egyptian courts awarded her custody, the family intervened to stop it from occurring. And local leaders refused to intervene on her behalf.

Finally, the day she’s dreamed and fought so hard for happened Wednesday.

“I think she saw her in the afternoon over there,” said Ruth Greer, Janet’s mother from their Waynesville home. “She said, ‘Mom, she looks like me; tall and slender. She’s got hair down to her waist.’ She was ecstatic.”

Can you imagine what this must have been like for this woman? To have her child abducted, and despite her best efforts, to have any contact with her daughter refused? I sure can’t:

State Department Assistance

Ruth Greer said a recent bombardment of media coverage, pressure from people like Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other high-profile officials put shame on the Elgohary family, with whom Dowsha and her father were living.

An Egyptian-American journalist recently published a stinging piece about Greer’s situation in Egyptian newspapers. The publicity and outcry enlightened the government and enraged people, writer Zagloul Ayad, of Boston, said in an interview last week. Ayad also runs a nonprofit to help others in similar situations.

Greer’s YouTube video, in which she tearfully pleads her case, also spread all over Egypt and other newspapers picked up her story.

“They all got tired of the press hanging around,” Ruth Greer said, “and bringing shame on themselves.”

I’ve followed this story for years and have been amazed at the fight Greer puts up daily — the e-mails and phone calls, her reaching out to anyone who may help her see her child.

Many times she flew to Egypt, only to win custody by law, but was never granted actual access to her daughter.

Here is the YouTube video, mentioned above:

Holy cow, can you imagine what Janet Greer’s life has been like for the past 12 years? It sounds like a living hell. And then Secretary Clinton stepped in:

Finally, A Reunion

Janet Greer prepared for the reunion by collecting some of Dowsha’s favorite toys from when she was a baby and toddler. The girl is now 15, and Janet hadn’t seen her since she was 3. She was hoping the toys would stir a memory.

“(Janet) used to wear Jontue (perfume) when Sarah was little and wore it today, hoping when they hugged each other the familiar scent would be there,” Ruth Greer said.

“Janet called me to say peace has been established between the family (the Elgoharys of Egypt) and her. She said she met with them all and Magdy (Dowsha’s father) even asked about me. The lines of communication are open. They have agreed for her to have visitation and there was even some joking.”

According to the “Good Morning America” segment, the days preceding the reunion were tangled in red tape and more refusals.

Clinton spoke to the Egyptian foreign minister on Greer’s behalf, saying that “as a mother,” she was hopeful this would be resolved.

A spokesman from the U.S. State Department said the department has been aware of the case since 1997.

“The Department has been fully engaged with Ms. Greer since learning of the tragic abduction of her daughter, Sarah, in 1997,” said spokesman Darby Holladay. “At every possible opportunity, we have pressed the Egyptian government to resolve this case. We will continue to assist Ms. Greer for as long as necessary.”He also said the embassy had assisted Greer during each of her visits to Egypt over the last 12 years and accompanied her to court hearings and meetings, providing support.

But just last week, despite pleas from high-profile officials, Greer again lost custody in Egyptian courts, due to paperwork problems from a lawyer.

With American leaders and national media at her side, she then decided to plead once more with the family, and told them she’d drop all charges if they’d allow visitation with Dowsha.

The family, upset by all the media attention, agreed to a meeting in their hometown near Cairo.

I’m glad to hear the State Department has been aware of this for the past 12 years, and has provided assistance, but, evidently, it wasn’t enough. Clinton has been on the job how long now, and she was able to make this happen? Just sayin’.

Finally, the actual reunion:

I Love You

With her daughter finally standing next to her, the first words out of Greer’s mouth were “I love you,” in both Dowsha’s language and in English.

“I think she’s on Cloud Nine,” Ruth Greer said of her daughter. “She’s actually laid eyes physically on her daughter and is so thrilled and excited. She doesn’t speak much English so they are going to have to get to know each other again.”

Despite the good news, Ruth Greer continues to harbor mixed emotions.

“I still don’t trust them,” she said of the family who put them “through hell,” including so much stress both she and Janet suffered health problems over the years, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent trying to reunite with the girl.

“I wonder if this is another ploy,” Ruth Greer said.

She also said she didn’t know how long her daughter would remain in Egypt or if Dowsha would come to the United States with her.

“I wish this was behind me and she were back home to a normal life,” Ruth Greer said.

Earlier in the week, I received the following e-mail from Greer, describing the conditions she was under.

“It is all over the news here and in the newspapers, people point at me where ever I go,” she wrote. “The local news filmed this day before yesterday and it is all over the satellite here. They would not let us film here at the hotel because it is an old Palace where the King lived, a landmark, so it is against the law to film so we went out into the street by the Nile to do it. Traffic stopped to watch … It would be so simple if the Elgohary family would just let me see Dowsha!”

And now they have. Many years are gone, but I imagine Janet Greer is wondering about the many more she can share with her daughter. (Susan Reinhardt is a Citizen-Times columnist. Contact her at sreinhardt@CITIZEN-TIMES.com.)

Wow – what an amazing tale.

And Secretary Clinton has also been fighting on behalf of David Goldman, a NJ man who has been fighting to have his son returned since 2004 (h/t to a faithful reader who told me of his plight). His son, now 9 years old, was taken by his wife on a visit to Brazil. After she got there, she informed her husband she was staying, and a battle has ensued ever since. Secretary Clinton began working on this in March.

No doubt, Secretary Clinton will continue to fight for Mr. Goldman until he, like Janet Greer, gets to be with his son again. I hope, and pray, that time will be soon…

Im sorry.but I dont see how hillary did anything to facilitate the reunion……..hillary should resign from the obama administration and save whats left of her reputation……I mean cmon…..hillary talks to an egyptian minister and WHAMO the reunion happens? I dont mind giving out credit when it is deserved…..but I am having trouble connecting the dots on this one….If the state dept has been involved for 12 years…that means the problem started under bill’s watch…..

Thank goodness there is one bright spot in all of the evil that has befallen the former United States of America and that would be Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-06-15 10:15:12

Mark, we don’t dictate opinion here. I think the reaction you are getting is the implication Hillary did nothing much to facilitate this, but yet – she did. The article is pretty clear on that, so your resistance to giving credit where it is due – to Hillary – will get you that response.

Not sure what the point is abt this starting under Bill’s watch – Hillary isn’t Bill, and issues facing women and children have4 long been her cponcern. So, how abt celebrating what she accomplished for Ms. Greer instead? Just a thought.

Comment by ConfusedAmerican | 2009-06-15 10:51:28

I’m not sure what the point of any of the posts are ….Mark’s seems like the only one so far that has anything to do with the post????

I am very happy about the reunion….I should have been more clear….I have nothing against hillary….and I am not an obama supporter….I happen to have a different opinion…..I want her to resign for her own good…..If obama keeps screwing up like he is….hillary will be brought right along with him…..I hope this is clear now…..

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-06-15 12:05:53

Mark, I totally get your point, and many people share your sentiment. If you have read my posts for a while, you know I NEVER wanted her in this Administration. NOW, though, she seems to be the only adult in the room.

Do I worry abt her affecting her credibility? Heck yes, especially when she goes on the Sun. morning talk shows and waxes poetic on how GREAT Obama is. I can’t even listen to it. SO, I get what you are saying. Thanks for your comments.

thank you…..I dont understand why hillary isnt doing what george mitchell is doing…obama needs to let her act like the sec. of state…stop outsourcing the state dept jobs….Im very glad you understood what I was saying……

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-06-15 12:59:16

I agree – Obama is undermining her by outsourcing so much of what should be HER job. But I think most of us KNEW that was going to happen, hence why we didn’t want her in there in the first place.

Obama’s statements to Wolffe of Newsweek tell us all we need to know of what Obama REALLY thinks of her. And he doesn’t deserve to be in the same damn room with her…

Personally I think she flatters O because he must be flattered. She is in a position where she can effect much needed changes and help people all over the world. Her bottom line is serving her country. If she has to flatter a frail male to do it, so what. Most women are used to that.

Comment by sjc-tx | 2009-06-15 16:54:23

That is the “abused woman” response… and VERY wrong. Patronizing is not an option to ‘change’

How can you be so naive??

Comment by Animal Control | 2009-06-15 18:24:59

If she has to flatter a frail male to do it, so what. Most women are used to that.

Sounds rather sexist don’t you think.

Comment by Ani | 2009-06-15 20:29:13

Yes and we live in a sexist country. 2008 proved that if nothing else did.

What nan is accurately pointing out is that Hillary will play the game with O so long as she can accomplish something for others that need help. Is it fair? No. But that is our current environment. Do I like it? Hell, no. She is not perfect but I’m glad there’s an adult in the room who gives a damn.

I look forward to a day when we don’t play this game anymore. It is easy to just say stop but after the media slaughter last year, who would get something done. They would continue to excoriate her making it impssible to do any job because too many in the public still believe all this crap about “divisive and polarizing” or “ego driven and power hungry”. It’s all b.s. of course, but some don’t pay close enough attention to figure that out.

Comment by Animal Control | 2009-06-15 21:19:49

Ani, I agree with your interpretation and also the first part of nan’s but what I cannot get is the generalizations that don’t apply to Obama but to me in general. I think it’s sexist.

Women who abhor sexism shouldn’t practice it in reverse. In fact if women began fighting for their rights not as women but as PEOPLE and/or PERSONS as the Bill of Rights reads then they could and should win.

Anyway let’s stop the sexist generalizations from both sides.
Have a nice evening.

mark has a point,,, Just cause it’s “Hillary”, we are supposed to fall at her feet?! Hillary is a vast disappointment to me in her failing to stand up to obama; on several fronts. She is just playing politics. And before anyone jumps on me, I gave her $2300 for her campaign… I was a state delegate for her. But I also have the ‘ability’ to disagree and speak out when I am frustrated with her. She, like obassole isn;t faultless. If we never question our “leaders”…, we are no more than a cult…

Yes Hillary ‘did good’ as the article reported… But too many other “issues” of late, almost cancel out the ‘greatness’ of her deed…

Sorry folks… NO ONE gets a free pass

Comment by Docelder | 2009-06-15 18:43:13

I won’t forget her and Bill actively campaigning for Obama. It was like a switch was flipped and she flipped with it from saying Obama was unqualified to regurgitating the old standard Axelrod inspired “McSame” pitch. I know a lot of folks here practically worship her, but the more I think about it, the more I am starting to believe that if it were not for the republican house in 1992, we would have seen much of what is happening today back then. For example, the Clinton’s started Americorps and now we are seeing the GIVE act and CityYear emerge prominently. Do what you will to us adults, provided we are stupid enough to lay down and take it… but start indoctrinating kids and a line has been crossed. If we ever clean house in Washington, I hope she gets tossed out with the bathwater. But, that is just me, and I am maybe in a bad mood about things lately.

Was there not another poster with “….”??

For someone who “can’t connect the dots”, you sure use a lot of them.

For the record, as a first lady, as a senator and now as SOS, Hillary Clinton has a very positive record on this issue of child abduction by non custodial parents and I dare say you could fined an interview on this topic with her.

Why should she resign? In for a penny in for a pound. She will not quit. She does not do this service because of her own ambitions or she would have staied put in the senate as she recently stated. She does not do it for POTUS’s political benefit either.

Comment by Texas Playwright | 2009-06-15 10:29:02

I think Hillary’s many years of championing human rights, with objective results, from her early days in Arkansas all the way to the clearly rigged election of 2008 and her SOS role, which she could have easily refused and stayed home, written books, given speeches and made millions, is what helped facilitate a meeting with this mother and child. Sure, the State Dept. has been working on this for years, even when Bill was in office. The point is these two women of courage, compassion and determination, both mothers, have worked long and hard for the safety of families–one, a mother who wants to see her abducted child, the other, a mother who serves a nation.

The patriarchal world has some glaring minuses– misogyny in all forms, including kidnapping a child and colluding with one’s family to keep that child from her mother. The journalist from Boston who’s worked on this case for years, the parents-of-abducted-children network, the media in Egypt, the many citizens of Egypt all helped day after day to bring pressure on this shameless man and his shameless family and the cowardly court system that couldn’t/wouldn’t step up and send this little girl HOME to the USA.

Hillary’s compassion, knowledge, experience and diplomacy is the missing piece of the puzzle that helped this mother and child meet. Hillary could have palmed this off on a subordinate–instead, she got directly involved. I think that is the point of this post–Hillary does the work in ways large and small, both meaningul, to serve human beings. It says much about the pitiful state of women’s rights that Ms. Greer offered to drop all charges against this criminal man just to meet her daughter.

Bless Ms. Greer and Bless Secretary Clinton.

Comment by Peggy Sue | 2009-06-15 13:17:09

Well said, Texas Playwright. Hillary Clinton has worked tirelessly throughout her entire professional career championing the rights of women and children. A case like this and the one in Brazil is typical of her advocacy in these international disputes. And her name and input as SOS does carry clout.

I have always admired Hillary’s guts, her refusal to give up and her passion for public service. I may not like the present Administration but I’m glad she’s in the State Department. We certainly need a few grownups in the room.

Good job Hillary! BTW where was Mubarak in all of this? The man is in effect a dictator and one word from him the child would have been sent home.

The article makes clear that Secretary Clinton was involved. I’ve noticed a trend here. Whenever something positive happens as a result of State Department involvment there are calls for Hillary to resign.

Or, as in the case of the freed female journalist, there is silence. None of the so-called liberals/progressives that initially said it was a good idea for Hillary to take the job are willing to give her any kudos for her successes.

No praise for Hillary going to bat for equal benefits for gay partners in the State Department. But many excuses for Obama’s support of DOMA.

The first time there is a failure of diplomacy Hillary will get the blame. There are always times when diplomacy fails. But any successes she’s had will be forgotten or ignored.

Comment by BuzzisbackLatte | 2009-06-15 12:29:30

While I do not like the idea of Hillary being tainted by anything Obama, I do think she is the only responsible and trustworthy member of his cabinet. True, she does appear to be the only adult in the room.

Comment by trixta | 2009-06-15 12:56:26

Yeah, Buzz, my sentiments exactly.

Compare the performance of the following:

GWB declares “Mission Accomplished” over and over again for any little thing.

BO promises to have many missions accomplished, but reneges on his promises over and over again.

HRC neither declares nor promises, just accomplishes what needs to be done.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-06-15 13:04:40

Well said.

And yes, she gets very little credit for all of the things she is doing, like with the Iranian/American journalist, Saberi, and Ms. Greer; or getting equal benefits for ALL US diplomats. There is so, so much more that she does abt which many would not hear at all, if not for the Dipnotes Blog from the State Dept. It is sad, and almost criminal, the negligence that goes on abt what she is doing.

Anyway, great comments, y’all.

Hillary Clinton is the person you call to get the job done, she won’t get big, over the top media praise/ass-kissing that That One gets, but it’s cool. HRC has proven that she’s not in politics for the fame. She’s here because she actually cares.
