“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?”
…”Janet Reno is her father.” –John McCain
“Did you know there’s a White House dog?”
…holds up a picture of 13 year old Chelsea–Rush Limbaugh
yeah, off limits.
Yeah, it does seem to be more a matter of convenience as to WHEN “off limits” is acceptable and when it’s not.
So many NQ posters actually continue to listen to that blowhard, Rush Limbaugh, DESPITE his abhorrent rhetoric (incidentally, compared to Limbaugh’s “apology”, Letterman kissed Palin’s ass and then allowed her to tie him to the mast and give him 40 lashes), simply because Limbaugh bashes Obama.
As to Amy Carter, I don’t really recall her being the target of political attacks. I think the Carters wanted to keep her comings and goings under less press scrutiny so she could have as normal a childhood as possible. (At the ripe old age of 9, Amy was the first President’s CHILD to be in the White House since JFK’s children. LBJ only had one minor child, Luci, when he took office–and she was 16 then. Both of the Nixon children were legally adult when Nixon took office. And Ford only had one minor–Susan–and she was 17 when Ford took office.) More importantly, when the Carters moved into the White House, there was a general consensus that children up to about 16 were off-limits to the press at all levels (it was a bit double-sided–politicians didn’t want their children being in the “fish bowl” but would use them to play up the “family” angle; of course, it was also important to show that you were always “thinking of the children” when making stump speeches, even while you were talking about cutting gov’t programs designed to help children). Then, after Reagan took office, we didn’t have any minor children in the White House (all of Reagan’s kids were legal adults during his 1980 campaign and GHW Bush’s children were legal adults during his 1988 campaign–the youngest of the Bush children, in fact, was already a legal adult when Bush ran for the GOP nomination in 1980) until Clinton took office, and it was Limbaugh who fired the first (cheap) shot at Chelsea (and Limbaugh rarely would let up if he thought up a new insult). Then with Dubya, his daughters were also legal adults by the time he took office.
I do agree that taking aim at children of politicians is pretty mean, but I’m also willing to have a cut-off period for when the children become fair game for the press and media. IMO, once the kid is 16, he or she shouldn’t expect any more privacy than any other public figure (I’d be willing to make an exception for a “special-needs” child in a general sense and include some personal situations–we probably don’t need to be witness to a politician’s child getting his/her driver’s license or report cards).
BUT, I’d like for some on this site to play fair. If you’re going to criticize Letterman for his “jokes”, don’t you dare let Limbaugh get away with some of his “entertainment”. (And don’t you dare forget that Limbaugh has been at the “attack-the-kids” forefront for a far longer time.)
This is real simple, if the punchline to a joke has the word RAPE in it, it is not a joke — doesn’t matter how old or who the woman is.
i’m not sure what your position is; are you for these kind of jokes or against them?
Thank goodness some cartoonists are still telling the truth.
This is getting way too disgusting about Sarah Palin
and her family.
Something needs to be done:
BOYCOT!!!
If you find Letterman offensive, don’t watch him. It’s called free speech. What some people find offensive, other people find humorous. Dave never said that the daughter was “raped” during a game. I believe Todd Palin threw out that word.
Just for your information, “knocking up” a fourteen-year-old girls is called statuatory RAPE.
(And don’t try to excuse him by giving the blather about his thinking it was the 18-year-old daugher. He’s such an all-important celebrity and he can’t get the facts right about who is at the game? Give me a break.)
I 100% believe him that he thought it was the 18 year old. rape is a much more offensive word which is why Todd keeps tossing around. Dave NEVER said “rape”.
Do people just presume that if your politics differ then you should assume very word the other person speaks is a lie. I’d like to have a little more faith in people than that.
The thing that makes me question the accuracy of that statement by Letterman. Besides the contant attempts to pawn the misunderstanding on the audience within the apologies.
Is how many times has Letterman messed up the details of a joke prior?
None that I am aware of.
While one of the cartoons upbove has an example of Conan messing up the date of joke. I don’t recall them messing up the target of a joke either.
It just don’t pass the sniff test.
So, I don’t believe they messed up, and read somewhere else that their website had advertized something to the effect of.
“See what all the controversy is about…watch Dave Letterman.”
It seems like a deliberate controversy to increase ratings.
typo…constant
ugh…smell test
well I’ve researched the number of mistakes Dave has made over the years and find no data available… which doesn’t mean it does not exist.
I work for a magazine that has a much longer fact-checking window and sometimes people just miss things.
Well, I wasn’t making a claim about actual complied data, though the media did catch these mistakes, so it seems it could be found if there. Though Google doesn’t remember everything…lol.
It was just based on my years of watching him. I don’t remember him making any mistakes about the target of a joke.
He does have a long history of being a jerk though. He tamed somewhat after moving to CBS and then having a son and the heart bypass.
But no memories of him mistaking the target of a joke.
It also well know he is a perfectionist who takes it hard and personally when he feels the show didn’t go well.
Another thing that has me doubting he missed the target.
well if you’ve never heard him make a similar mistake then he must have never made one.
I didn’t find those joke funny but also not SO offensive that I would want to protest outside the studio with the other 5-10 people who were there. Nor the need to boycott any advertisers. In fact, I plan to boycott Olive Garden (it’s a dive anyway) because of their statement!
I guess my biggest problem with the whole story was Palin’s faux outrage to keep her name in the news. MORE offensive jokes (hnting at incest) were made by Conan O’Brien last October and she was on his show 2 weeks later. 2 different times on the tonight show jokes were made about Bristol who was 17 at the time. Craig Ferguson’s skit of “Larry King vs Levi Johnston” asks about “kinky sex” with the drapes open. Craig Ferguson’s honorary Alaska citizenship, granted by Governor Palin wasn’t rescinded. So why the outrage NOW a year later over a washed up late night comedian
Just wondering justme, why are you 100% sure Letterman was speaking of the older girl? Bristol didn’t go to the game, she didn’t go to NY. You are making the assumption his writers were aware of the visit, but were too stupid to find out which daughter was attending the game. I’m not 100% sure of anything anymore, but I’m 99.99% sure his joke referred to the younger Palin and that they saw nothing wrong with the joke.
Did you think the joke was funny? Did you think his comment about Gov Palin dressing like a “slutty airline stewardess” funny?
Letterman is finding out how powerful free speech can be. He’s lost two sponsors because he crossed the line of decency and it is my sincere hope he will continue to lose until CBS finds they invested in a pig. I make no presumptions about him based on politics since I’m just not that “into” political parties anymore and happily attack them equally.
Bobby Brown just got six months community service for beating the hell out of his girlfriend, Rihanna. I’m hoping for a “lipstick” revolution right here in the USA. How about a fire Bill Maher campaign?
Power to women and the men who understand and support them. We can make a difference.
Great comment!
I have never met so many people who hate someone they have never met almost to the point of detest.
I agree. The people who seem to hate Palin the most know nothing of her positions or policies. They have no idea what she’s done as governor except she wants all wolves dead (deliberate exaggeration here).
These are the same folks who supported Obama with no knowledge of his positions or policies. They ignored the fact that Obama consistently said one thing and did the opposite. They simply knew they “liked” him and “hated” Palin.
I gotta give the Obama campaign and the media credit for a master stroke. Obama didn’t run against McCain. He ran against Palin. The Obama campaign managed to demonize Hillary, a fellow Democrat. They were ready for Palin.
Yes, but, even SusanUnPC admitted, she hated HRC until sometime during this campaign cycle. Yet she - HRC - was the same person before running for POTUS as she was after getting into the race.
I gained respect for Sen Clinton as her campaign grew that I did not have when she was our first lady. She is a different person when not in Bill’s shadow. If she was the nominee, SHE had my Republican vote.
HRC developed remarkably as her campaign evolved.
I didn’t like her at first either, but she morphed into a spectacular leader.
Mary that was very nice. You are one of the reasons I have changed my opinion of Republicans. Not ALL are cut of the same cloth.
I don’t seem to be as forgiving of my old party. But perhaps that is because I haven’t heard ONE of them say they got HILLARY wrong! There were a LOT of Dem Hill haters from the onset unfortunately.
I wasn’t an uber fan of hers during the Clinton Presidency. I thought she should have DECKED Bill for what he did (in a public arena if possible) lol!
I’ve since seen that she’s too dignified for that and I respect her for staying true to herself. I hope she’s still able to do that with BAMBI’s group. blech!
I would say the hatred toward Obama by people who have never met his FAR outweighs hatred directed at Palin.
Misogyny sells well in America. The attacks on Chelsea were attacks on Hillary, the attacks on Willow and Bristol are attacks on Palin. Ultimately they are attacks on all women and designed to send us a message to stay in our place.
You won’t see Biden’s kids attacked, or Obama’s, or any other male politician. If Obama’s kids are ever singled out like this it will be because Michelle has stepped out of her designated role and decided to do something useful.
it’s all a big plan in order to “keep women in ther place”. that’s ridiculous. if that’s the case, nobody called me to tell me what to do and say in order for the “plan” to be successful.
yeah there are a lot of jerks in the world who think that way… just as there are racists, people who hate Jewish people or people of faiths different from their own, but to say that’s its a conspiracy designed to keep women in their place is ridiculous… is it a worldwide conspiracy or just here in the U.s.?
People can think and say whatever they want, either agree or don’t. Surround yourself with like minded people and never watch tv if you don’t want to be, god forbid, offended.

“Stockholm: An Exploration of True Love” is a game that allows the user to experience,
“…a terrifyingly vivid exploration of Stockholm Syndrome, a psychological condition in which a captive falls in love with her kidnapper. And you play the part of the kidnapper. With a limited number of options, you must figure out how to make her fall in love with you.”
This includes using poison gas on the victim, sexually assaulting her and using psychological abuse against her in efforts to make her “love” you. Unbelievable.
There’s a link where you can sound off at em.
forgot, I think it’s Just You_kc. I’m way beyond offended, and I don’t even like Palin.
Why should we sound off on them? 69,000,000 voting Americans just displayed the greatest mass example of the Stockholm Syndrome this last election. They fell in love with a devious, malignant, soul snatching tyrant that used image and words to capture and brainwash his hostages. The creators of the game simply need to update it to reflect the more subtle techniques employed by Obama. Or, just have different editions of the game like “The SLA/Patty Hearst” version, or “The Obama/Bonehead Voter” version.
The game does not display BHO raping people and those people falling in love with him as a result. One might perceive a certain irony there if it did.
However, if you do not find a “game” that encourages men to rape women and inflict poison gas upon them in order to make them fall in love with them reprehensible, all I can say is stick it up your armpit, nut.
What quack Doctor performed the humor-ectomy on you Nom, YOU seem to be the one with something rammed up your ***. Lighten up, I’ve strongly condemned many times on this blog the type of treatment of women that you’ve just brought up. Just because I failed to condemn it to your liking in this one instance, doesn’t in any way demonstrate that I endorse it. So stick it up your own hairy armpit, nut.
the speed with which you go for the misogynistic comment belies any purported feminism
And which mysogynistic comment was that Nom? When you are on an obsessive paranoid alert for such things, I’m sure you see much that is simply not there, and even more that is definitely not intended.
The speed with which you so often find offense belies any objectivity.
the suggestion that a woman who disagrees with you must have hairy armpits is clearly intended as a misogynistic slur, no paranoia needed.
Nor was I aware that having a firm opinion on the subject of the rape and gassing of women as “play” makes one lacking in objectivity.
1. I had no idea that you were a woman.
2. BOTH sexes have hairy armpits. Sorry, it’s true.
3. The fact that you took THAT statement as a mysogynistic slur proves that you are so eager to find personal offense, that you find what is not there. Out of the blue, in response to my first statement that had absolutely nothing insulting directed at you, you ordered me to “stick it up your armpit, nut!” Was that not an insult shot at me? But look how you’ve squealed when I directed an almost identical shot at you. If you don’t like getting insults, you probably shouldn’t throw them.
“The game does not display BHO raping people and those people falling in love with him as a result”
Maybe it SHOULD! The argument could be made that something very similar happened. That was my point, because the cult of personality is very similar to the Stockholm Syndrome.
Sorry Nom if you’re unable to understand the use of hyperbole to make a point, I’ll make a note to never respond to any of your posts now that I’m aware of your many exposed nerves. Hope you feel better soon.
That comment, particularly the “stay in our place” phrase, reminded me of Sarkozy’s stance against the burqa:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/5603070/Nicolas-Sarkozy-burqa-not-welcome-in-France.html
Whereas, Obama defends a woman’s right to wear a burka. Hope and change. Right.
these are not jokes, they are insults masking as jokes.
Yeah, the one about BO and Brian Williams in bed together was especially telling. Perhaps the joke was code for asking Brian out for a date. I guess date night would have a whole other meaning in this context.
Although the shared bed does sound plausible, I imagine a greater possibility of the two of them arguing over the taxi fare.
I’m no Palin fan, but became livid at Letterman during the election. His attacks on her were psychotic.
He pulled the same thing on HRC during the primaries. The man has screws loose about women.
I stopped watching his show because he rarely has woman guests or on-air talent. On one rare show where he did have a female guest - Paula Abdul, he just sat there cruelly and relentlessly teasing her to the point where she stood up and walked off. I’m no Abdul fan either, but she gave an amusing and intelligent interview, and had done nothing to warrant Letterman’s rudeness.
Letterman is clearly showing his age.
He’s morphed into Imus. It’s time for him to bow out while he’s ahead.
Folks,
The Letterman event is a game changer and rarely again will you hear disparaging or sexist remarks aimed at Sarah Palin and other conservative women.
If Letterman had succeeded with his joke it would have been open season on Sarah and possibly the end of any chance at the Presidency.
Instead Sarah represents the turning point in History.
Sarah can now enjoy her new found freedom and take comfort in her
absolute victory over the dinosaur media.
I got a new name for Sarah
Teflon Sarah!!
Now that I think about it…You sure do remind me of Reagan
The Newly disenfranchised are rising up!!
Good points Moss. Let’s hope it is a history changer. I get so worked up when Sarah is put on the grill. And for what? How I hope she’ll be able to cut all of them down to size. I’d love to see her in the Senate before the next presidential election and expose the liars for what they are.
Are you aware of the constant and frivolous complaints and charges being thrown at her by the opposition in her own state? It’s costing her a fortune in legal fees. I think there is a group that is raising money to help her but I don’t know who it is.
She may now be somewhat immunized nationally, so they’ll quietly attack her locally. I remember that the same kind of fear that Reagan whipped up on the left is very similar to the type Palin inspires now. Like Reagan, Palin also went to a modest college, not some high fallutin’ eastern, ivy covered, snob factory. She shares many of the best qualities that put Reagan in the Whitehouse. She terrifies the left because of that. They will not stop flinging the mud. What a disgrace.
I hope Seattle Moss is right about Palin now being Teflon Sarah…but I’m not as confident. On another front, Paul Begala implied Meghan McCain was stupid or uneducated or both on Bill Maher when she dared to suggest Obama should move forward and stop referring back to Bush when he needed a scapegoat. Bashing McCain’s daughter probably isn’t near as fun as bashing Palin’s 14 year old, but Begala gave it the old college try.
http://beltwayblips.dailyradar.com/video/meghan_mccain_pwnd_by_paul_begala_on_real_time_with/
Meghan McCain talks like a 13-year-old Valley Girl.
I was in shock when I heard her the first time.
Of course I am!
However, it barely makes news and will go away soon.
Sarah’s momentum going forward will more than pay for her legal bills.
Well, she can depend on the maximum support that I’m able to give her. She is far more inspiring than any other conservative out there at the moment, and my point is that she is a much bigger target because of that. She has already proven to me that she doesn’t have a glass jaw like Obama, so if she can get through the next few years of the type of abuse that she has already experienced, she’ll have proven her metal. She has already weathered the type of abuse that would make Obama crumble into a quivering lump; she is far more qualified than him to hold the office.
Reagan was equally trashed at this stage of the game, but the desire to make this country healthy overwhelmed the negative portrayal of him.
I only hope that her family can withstand the brutal treatment from the msm & the left. Her daughters did nothing to deserve the treatment they are receiving and must bear the burden when their mother is critize so unfairly.
Mary, NONE of them deserved the type of treatment they’ve received. Just what the hell did ANY of them do to deserve such a vile assault? ALL of the attacks are so over the top that it almost seems as though we’ve reached the sort of moral tipping point that evolved in 1930’s Germany. Often, when Palin’s name comes up, many of my friends laugh derisively at how stupid she is. It is painful for me to ignore this shameless ridicule, so I’ve been trying to develope a compelling response to such a mindlessly reflexive, media induced, misconception. I’ve been able to pull off a good defense several times because of my knowledge of the facts, and because I’m passionate in my support of Palin.
But the left really did a number on her, I’m amazed at the effectiveness of the trash Palin campaign. When they all parrot in unison the same disgusting talking points, it becomes difficult to counteract. We need to orchestrate our own litany of talking points, and start it NOW. Palin is a huge rough diamond, midway through being cut to perfection, RIGHT NOW is the time that support for her will have the maximum effect. I’m inspired by her strength through all of these recent attacks, but everyone has limits, so all of us who believe in her need to lend her our strength, and send her all the way. This country is showing signs of a corrosive illness that’s draining the spirit and ethics of a proud and dynamic people, and a straightforward dose of gutsy American kick-ass is needed. Putting, and keeping Palin in a positive spotlight would be a good start.
keeping Palin in positive spotlight would be difficult because she isn’t presidential material.
But brutal and ugly assaults from misguided woman haters on the left (and there are plenty) were not the way to go.
blanket statements from a “standard” mean nothing to MOI
Palin is 150 percent more qualified to be President than the AcornFANnieMaePUnk we have there NOW
R U KIDDIN ME???? PAHAHAHAHa!
standard,
you said: “keeping Palin in positive spotlight would be difficult because she isn’t presidential material.”
neither is BO! He still isn’t presidential material and is proving it everyday, to the grave detriment of our country and the rest of the world.
Truth be told, BO has less experience than Palin, but no matter how much more experience a woman has than a man, she will always be expected to make way for the less qualified male.
With this kind of mindset, no wonder the world is about to blow itself up.
I don’t think Obama is any better. But he has a few decent people in his camp. Thanks to the Clintons.
God help us from the Rethugs that would surround Palin.
