Where In The World Is Marko? **UPDATED**

As in Governor Mark Sanford, our illustrious leader down here in South Carolina. You may have heard by now that Governor Sanford was, um, unavailable for a few days. Out of the clear blue sky, no one knew where the heck he was. Was he at his family’s summer home on Sullivan’s Island, keeping a low profile, celebrating Father’s Day with his children??? No….Was he hiking the Appalachian Trail like his staff said he was? Uh, that would be a negatory. Nope, it turns out that Governor Sanford took himself off to SOUTH AMERICA without so much as a “by your leave.”

No one knew where he was. No one. Not his wife. Not his security detail. Not the lieutenant governor, no one. To say it’s raised more than a few eyebrows in these here parts is just a bit of an understatement.

To give you a bit of a backstory, Governor Sanford has had a few defeats here recently. There was the whole not wanting any federal stimulus money – the Legislature said, “yes we do.” And he had a big string of defeats when the Legislature overturned every single one of his vetos, ten in number. So, according to the story in the Post and Courier (linked above):

He told his staff he might go hiking.

“But I said ‘no’ I wanted to do something exotic … It’s a great city,” he said during an interview at the Hartsville-Jackson International Airport.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip and declined to give any additional details other than to say he drove along the coastline.

He told the reporter he didn’t know why his staff told reporters he was on the Appalachian Trail.

Uh, yeah- because Buenos Aires is hardly the Appalachian Trail…

All manner of folks are weighing in on this, including our former (Dem) governor, Jim Hodges. Republicans and Democrats alike think it was irresponsible for him to call off his security detail, and provide NO means of communicating with him, especially as Gov Hodges said:

“You never know when a crisis is going to strike the state or the country; you can’t afford to be out of touch when that happens.”

He makes a good point, especially given Gov. Sanford had, as I said, no security detail at all. Even Republicans are upset with him, with one of our representatives, the House Speaker, Bobby Harrell, weighing in:

“If a governor is going to go off by himself where he cannot be reached and without his security, then he should have to transfer that authority during that period of time,” Harrell said. “But the real answer is a governor shouldn’t do those things.”

Yeah, probably not. But here’s the thing: apparently, Governor Sanford did not violate the State Constitution. According to the article:

Nothing in the state constitution requires the governor to announce his travel plans, or even to declare when he is out of state.

In fact, beyond the line of succession, the constitution is vague on many of the movements surrounding the governor, though it does allow for the lieutenant governor to take over in the governor’s absence during an emergency.

Article 4, Section 11 covers only the “removal of the Governor from office by impeachment, death, resignation, disqualification, disability, or removal from the State, (that) the Lieutenant Governor shall be Governor.”

It reads that “In the case of the temporary disability of the Governor and in the event of the temporary absence of the Governor from the State, the Lieutenant Governor shall have full authority to act in an emergency.”

Temporary absence and temporary disability are not defined further.

An attorney general’s opinion from the 1970s concluded that the lieutenant governor possesses authority to extradite prisoners in the governor’s absence. The lieutenant governor can determine when an emergency exists, it said.

Was it smart? No. Irresponsible? Yes. Mind-boggling? You betcha. But it wasn’t illegal. It just doesn’t make much sense. And what it did was make a governor who has been seen as a fair governor look like a nutjob. And don’t think the Post and Courier didn’t point that out. From here on out, Governor Sanford is going to be linked with the following governors: A LOOK AT ODD BEHAVIOR BY U.S. GOVERNORS

South Carolina’s chief executive isn’t the first to earn headlines for acting odd.

A look at governors’ unusual behavior:

EARL LONG; GOVERNOR OF LOUISIANA, 1939-1940, 1948-1952, 1956-1960: Long had an affair with a stripper, Blaze Starr. In 1959, Earl got into arguments with legislators at the State House and his wife at the mansion. He was committed to the State Hospital for the Insane but released after using his authority as governor. He removed the hospital director and replaced him with a doctor who was his ally.

JIMMIE DAVIS; LOUISIANA GOVERNOR, 1944-1948 and 1960-1964: Well known as the “Singing Governor,” Davis gained international fame with his version of the song “You Are My Sunshine.” Even while serving as governor, he kept his hand in show business and set a record for absenteeism during his first term with trips to Hollywood to make Western “horse operas.”

LESTER MADDOX; GEORGIA GOVERNOR, 1967-1971: Maddox was known for quaint sayings, such as calling constituents “little people,” and outrageous gestures such as riding a bicycle backward.

JESSE VENTURA; MINNESOTA GOVERNOR, 1999-2003: Ventura traded his pinstriped suits for referee stripes when he took part in a WWE “SummerSlam” event in Minneapolis. Later in his term, he moonlighted as a football commentator for the failed XFL. He also tried to make Capitol reporters wear press credentials dubbing them “Jackals.”

ROD BLAGOJEVICH; ILLINOIS GOVERNOR, 2003-2009: After his ouster from office, Blagojevich joined the Second City comedy troupe for a performance of its show “Rod Blagojevich Superstar.” He also planned to appear on NBC’s “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” until a judge ruled that he couldn’t leave the country while awaiting trial on federal corruption charges.

ELIOT SPITZER; NEW YORK GOVERNOR, 2007-2008: Elected on an anti-corruption platform, Spitzer resigned after becoming embroiled in an investigation into a high-end prostitution ring. Referred to in court papers as “Client-9,” Spitzer spent tens of thousands of dollars to arrange visits with prostitutes, law enforcement officials said. Prosecutors ultimately declined to file criminal charges.

Oh, joy. Like this state doesn’t have enough to deal with in terms of education (the state sucks at it), hurricanes (we get a lot of them), tons of mercury in the water (maybe that’s the problem, and not the education – people eating mercury tainted fish), and now a Runaway Governor to go along with those (and many other) problems. Sigh.

Well, at least we have the Tall Ships arriving in Charleston from around the world to take our minds off of Governor Waldo. Though, I gotta tell you, those Russian sailors aren’t too used to our heat and humidity. To add insult to injury, they had to limp into harbor with a broken foremast. Imagine fixing that mast, when you’re from Russia, in mid-90 degree heat, and probably 150 degree humidity (okay, okay, that’s a slight exaggeration…). But they aren’t facing as much heat as Governor Sanford is, and at least they get that nice breeze off the water…

UPDATE: H/T to American Girl in Italy for the heads up that Governor Sanford has admitted he was having an affair. Yep. For a YEAR. He went off to see his lady friend. Holy smokes – WHEN will these people EVER learn??? Here’s the skinny:

In an emotional news conference, Sanford said his relationship with the woman in Argentina would not work, but would not say if it was over. He did not name the woman, but said he met her eight years ago, although their casual friendship evolved into a romantic relationship about a year ago.

“The bottom line is this: I have been unfaithful to my wife,” the two-term governor said before a mass of press in the State House outside the governor’s office. “Let me apologize to my wife Jenny and my four boys … for letting them down.”

Asked directly if he and first lady Jenny Sanford are separated, Sanford said: “I don’t know how you want to define that. I’m here and she’s there. I guess in a formal sense we are not.”

Sanford acknowledged he misled his staff earlier this week when he lead them to believe he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Sanford said he would resign as chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association — a platform he has used over the past few months to broadcast his opposition to President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus package and fueling speculation that Sanford was considering a 2012 run for president.

But Sanford did not respond when asked if he would resign as governor.

Sanford fought back tears several times during a 20 minute news conference, especially when he mentioned his marriage counselor and his long time personal and political friend Tom Davis, Sanford’s former chief of staff.

Sanford’s relationship with the woman in Argentina became more sexually charged about a year ago, but Sanford’s wife did not learn of the affair until about five month sago. The Sanfords have since been in counseling.

In his apology, Sanford acknowledged not only all South Carolinians, but people of faith, people in his own party as well as his family.

He denied he had ever had other extramarital affairs.

“I’ve spent the last five days of my life crying in Argentina,” Sanford said. “I am committed to trying to get my heart right.”

Good grief. It raises a whole bunch of questions, of course, like one pointed out by AGII, who made such a big issue of this on the national stage? I might add, maybe he was hoping for the John Edwards’ treatment. You know, the MSM looks the other way for over a year until some gossip rag exposes him…

There were a number of interesting comments at this article, including some along this line:

EIG4 :D ear ‘ol Mark should have also apologized to the many gay folks around South Carolina for denying them the right to marriage citing the destruction of its “sanctity”…excuse me?! I do believe committing ADULTERY kind of makes you a hypocrite! Looks to me like marriage between a man and a woman is still quite full of sin. Thanks!

Uh, yeah, there’s that.

Anyway – Mystery solved. Governor Waldo was simply having a romantic tryst. No wonder he didn’t tell anyone, ESPECIALLY his wife. Ahem…

Yes, I said that it was a woman to my husband when the Gov first disappeared. Didn’t bet anything tho. Damn!

Comment by trixta | 2009-06-24 16:27:59

Bottomline, he needs to resign — not for the affair — but for the abdication of duty as governor of that state.

Comment by Kathleen Wynne | 2009-06-25 11:11:21

Rev. Amy,

Imagine if this had been Governor Palin, instead of Sanford?

This is just another example of the huge double standard afforded men, that would never be given to any women for any reason.

As famed feminist and endocronoligist, Dr. Estelle Ramey, so aptly put it:

“We will have equality when a female schlemiel moves ahead as fast as a male schlemiel. That’s equality, not when a female Einstein gets promoted to associate professor.”

I sympathize with Marko. I know how it is, and I’m 65 years old and not in the greatest health, but when the urge to samba surges into your romantic soul and when, in your heart, the girl from Ipanema goes walking and that’s when she flashes those eyes and when strains of sweet bossanova cut through all the rap music crap surrounding you . . .

it’s so long South Carolina! . . . I’ll send a postcard . . .

Oh–it’s Buenos Aires? Then it’s time to tango–where’s that rose for my teeth . . .

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-06-24 16:18:36

ROTFLMAO…

Comment by trixta | 2009-06-24 16:52:51

Actually, I would have more respect for the governor if he had gone away to dance tango in Argentina, but as things go his affair is more trite than the tango image you suggest, Marko. But I do understand the sentiments about following one’s bliss where ever you can find it.

In all honesty, that tango image is funny only to those who know nothing about tango. As someone who dances tango, the-rose-in-the-teeth image is a ridiculous Hollywood invention. Argentine tango is nothing like the parodic American tango seen in ballroom dancing venues (i.e. Dancing With The Stars).

If you’re interested, and for a better understanding of what the real article is, I suggest the following films: THE TANGO LESSON, TANGO, & TANGO BAR. They are fantastic films about the art and history of tango. Enjoy!

Comment by oowawa | 2009-06-24 17:21:37

Thanks for the suggestions, trixta. I knew there had to be more to tango than Joe E. Brown dancing with Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot!

Comment by trixta | 2009-06-24 22:12:38

Oh yes, I forgot about that tango! Hilarious! Another favorite of mine is Raul Julia and Angelica Houston in The Adams Family. I chuckle every time I think about it!

My favorite video on Tango is the 60 Minutes special showing all these dour Norwegians going to dance halls every weekend and Tango-ing with strangers.

They all kept that deadpan sour look on their faces while going through the intimate sexy moves of this hot Latin dance.

It just breaks me up.

Comment by trixta | 2009-06-24 22:22:05

The dour look on their faces is actually the concentration/meditation one must have to tango successfully.

Check out this Italian tango short film called PERDIZIONE, which goes to show that tango is not a dance, but an obsession:

A woman? Wow. Two heterosexual sex scandals (John Ensign) in a row for the Republicans. That’s sort of like “family values” ?

Comment by HARP | 2009-06-24 15:30:21

Must be in competition with that family values guy Edwards.

Comment by A-Nony-Mouse | 2009-06-24 15:33:08

Big differences:

1.) Edwards was not even in office when he had his affair.

2.) Edwards has never run as a “family values” candidate. The GOP has the hypocrisy crown.

3.) The ridiculousness of how Sandford did this is just… close to insanity. Could you possibly cover up an affair any worse than this?

Comment by HARP | 2009-06-24 15:37:49

Edwards 2 Americas meant 2 different families.lol

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-06-24 16:21:13

And two different ways to screw America.

Comment by cathnealon | 2009-06-24 16:54:53

No, Edwards wasn’t in office, his wife just had cancer, that’s all, and he announced his candidacy when he knew he had cheated. Oh, well there are statistics. Like 70% of men cheat on their partners–I don’t know what it is for women to be fair but will find out. But of course women politicians don’t seem to be caught in prostitution rings, flying to Argentina or having their lovers come into the Oval office in order to carry on.

Comment by xax | 2009-06-24 17:14:03

Wrong is wrong. Doesn’t matter if you’re in office or not, what your preach or how you carry it. If you want another woman, get a divorce.

John Edwards was one of the Democrats wagging a shaming finger at Bill Clinton in the 1990s. I’d say that’s family values posturing worthy of a Republican.

Considering that Mr. Frank had likewise paid for Mr. Gobie’s service before inviting him to move in, it seems a safe bet he wasn’t exacly clueless about the situation: a parade of unknown men coming in and out of one’s house would be something of a giveaway; and it isn’t because he’s gay that it’s funny, it’s because it was a whorehouse, loon!!!

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-06-24 20:06:57

“..you piece of shit?”

Oh but it’s GREAT shit, Mrs Presky!
—-
I’m confused JozefAl, you wish to call a NomNomNom homophobic, when the topic is prostitution, which I believe is still illegal in DC?

From the Washing post;

Frank, one of two openly gay members of Congress, confirmed Friday that he paid Gobie for sex, hired him with personal funds as an aide and wrote letters on congressional stationery on his behalf to Virginia probation officials, but Frank said he fired Gobie when he learned that clients were visiting the apartment.

I do not care if he is gay or straight, as that is not point. He payed for it which makes Barney a John and Gobie was his pretty “woman” until he realized Gobie was using his diggs for tricks, while Barney was on the hill.

The representative answered a classified ad in the Washington Blade, the local gay weekly. “Exceptionally good-looking, personable, muscular athlete is available. Hot bottom plus large endowment equals a good time.”

Then in his third term, the 45-year-old representative had not yet stated his homosexuality publicly. He paid Gobie $80 in cash for sex.

I, too, had been guessing an affair; it’ just ao trite nowadays.

But my real suprise is always this: I am not running a state or a whole country, and I am not being paid with tax dollars. Right now, I’m just trying to get mundane things done–you know, yard work, caring for the five animal kids, cleaning this house, shopping for supplies, etc., and I sure don’t have time to build an extra-marital relationship, much less organize and plan the assignation, and don’t have the energy left to want to. We are paying these politicians too much, giving them too many underlings to do the actual work, and giving them too much time off. No wonder our government is such a mess.

But, RRRA, thanks especially for reminding me of Blaze Starr. I loved that name when I was a little girl, hearing about her on the news. Later, as a teenager, I would threaten to become like her to annoy my mother if she thought I wasn’t being ladylike enough. :-)

Politics, such a sexy profession!

Comment by oowawa | 2009-06-24 16:57:59

“A sexy profession” indeed. Looking at his portrait, it seems clear he has faraway places in his heart much more exotic than the Appalachian Trail. Somewhere along the line politics ceased to be a hard job and became a great opportunity for irresponsible playing around . . .

Ohmygosh, y’all are just cracking me up!!! Thanks for the laughs!

Abt Edwards: there IS a similarity insofar as his vehemence toward Bill Clinton over the Monica thing, and he certainly claimed during the Primary that it was incumbent upon a candidate to come clean abt such things. That is to say, Edwards was pretty damn sanctimonious abt extramarital relationships, including while he was HAVING one.

Oh – and then there’s the pesky problem of how he used his campaign contributions (and I admit, I hedged my bets a little and gave him money early on before ending up solidly in Clinton’s camp).

At least Sanford’s wife wasn’t completely blindsided by this, like Elizabeth was.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2009-06-24 16:40:12

Well at least he wasn’t lying when he said he needed to “clear his head”. The one in his pants. Then he had to delve into details, as if any of us give a shit about them, thus embarrassing his wife even more. It reminded me of when that whoremaster Rudy ditched his wife at a press conference with his mistress standing their.

I hope Sanford’s wife kills him in his sleep. In fact, she and Elizabeth Edwards whould both do it on the same night. Pigs all of them. especially the “family values” ones.

Democrats are not the ones running around preaching family values, the sanctaty of marriage, hold themselves up in the name of religion as being the most moral… the Republican party does… that is the difference and what you call a hypocrite….

Comment by Docelder | 2009-06-24 16:51:47

Well, Palin just keeps looking better and better every day. Strictly speaking as a candidate. But, doesn’t it seem like some master plot to eliminate all the GOP competition for 2012? when you consider the cost today to run successfully… it probably would pay dividends to buy the political competition booty call friends. Even at Spitzer prices, it’s cheaper than paying off union bosses. Just something to think about… but the ultimate fault still lies with the guys who can’t keep their pants up.

Comment by cathnealon | 2009-06-24 16:59:39

Democrats don’t “preach” because they don’t see anything wrong with what they’re doing.

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-06-24 20:22:18

Hmmmm, maybe it is more admirable to have lofty ideals and fall short of them than it is to have no ideals at all. Hypocrite is just a name applied to someone who has made the mistake of expressing the false belief that they are not flawed like the rest of us.

Of course Sanford has family values. He has so many family values in fact, that he needs multiple families to support them all.

Poor Marko; the grass is always greener on the other side of the planet, but it’s just as hard to cut.

I agree with Xax. I don’t understand how they can do this to their families. It was done to me 35 years ago but I was just a minion, not a high profile family like his. To humiliate his family like that is just dispicable. And at the least, how can they jepardize a career that they worked hard for. They seldom ever stay with the woman they gave it all up for.

How did he become a Governor? He is sooooo stupid. First he did a stupid thing by disappering and gave conflicting reasons then he followed it up with a very long press conference. Less talk, less mistake. He totally exposed himself.

Hope Americans should be wiser and stop electing people who don’t have strength of character, Republicans or Democrats.

Character is defined as ability to stand up for what you beleive in, OK?

Isn’t South Carolina bucking to be the first Christian State in the U. S.? Got a ways to go, I’d say.

One woman I admired is the ex-wife of our ex-gov. This gov was also a family-values Republican. There was all kinds of pretty reliable information out there about what the gov was doing on the side. Then his wife separated from him for a while. They had teen-aged kids. A little later, the papers annonced a reconciliation, she moved back in and stayed until his term was up. He couldn’t run again because of term limits. The minute he was out of office, she divorced the hypocrite.

This happened shortly after the Clinton scandal. It was a source of anger for some in the know that the news papers and t.v. news never reported the affair, especially after having to hear non-stop about Clinton’s.

In the long run, though, I’m glad they didn’t for the sake of the children involved, his wife’s and the other woman’s. And I just got a kick out of imagining the deal his wife got for agreeing to go along with the farce. She’s doing pretty well now on the social philanthropic circle. We don’t read much about him, though. :-)

Well that latest is his wife has known for a while and in fact asked him to move out a few weeks ago. It seems this trip was made for the purpose of breaking it off with his mistress. Who knows if that’s true or not. Even so, there hasn’t been a lot of whispers around SC about him even having an affair so it was well hid and to his credit, he got off the plane and admitted it verses continuing with that stupid hiking story.

People cheat on their loved ones every day. To expect any less of a politician is unrealistic but for some reason, we want them to be better behaved and more moral than us but unfortunately, they prove over and over they’re usually less so. So unless he used state money to finance his trips or did something else illegal, then I’m more partial to cutting him some slack for being human and making a mistake then slamming him. Most of us have done shameful things in the past too that we’d rather the public didn’t know so I really can’t throw stones.

…So, what you’re saying is: Give the Politicians more slack than they give each other if the opportunity for Political Capital prompts their own railing against their colleagues’ indiscretions.

Essentially, Marko declared himself dead. After two weeks, he turned the lights back on and the only thing that’s changed is the way we see him.

Someone explain to me how politics is different than what we see in the entertainment industry or in corporate business or frankly anywhere else in society.

I don’t condone any of it no matter what their political beliefs, how good an athlete they are, how well they entertain us, or how successful in business they are.

The ONE thing that can be concluded from all of these sordid affairs is that gays and lesbians could not do worse when it comes to the institution of marriage and maybe they can teach the rest of us something.

So far, the weirdest political sexcapade of all.

Comment by Mandelay | 2009-06-24 20:25:18

Did anyone really miss him? Maybe all the politicians should leave the country to visit a hotsiepatootsie somewhere, anywhere, but here. Then maybe we’d get some peace and even save a little of the money they all seem to grab for themselves.

Did you forget McGreavy? Or did I just not see it?

Comment by trixta | 2009-06-24 22:45:08

Oh my! McGreavy, Ryan, Craig, Spitzer…and the list goes on. It would be too funny for words except that they leave a trail of destroyed families behind.

So Sanford now wants a “zone of privacy” around this matter for the sake of his family.

Is he not, and those like him, constantly saying that we as citizens do not have a Constitutional right to privacy? At least that is the mantra cry every time a judicial nominee’s legal history is scrutinized?

In the case of Sanford, he is a public individual, who makes his living in the public sphere. He is even less entitled to privacy.

What about the mantra of “personal responsibility”? I wonder if his kids knew the deal? Where is Daddy on Father’s Day? So much for the homemade cards most of us as kids have presented our parents with on these occasions. ….So much for “family values”!!

As for his little sojorn to Argentina, I can’t help but wonder how many S.C residents, with the state’s 13% unemployment, wouldn’t like to have enough disposable income on hand to “get away from it all” and head someplace “exotic” themselves?

The best thing that could happen to dear Gov. Sanford is that his own name is added to S.C.’s unemployment rolls!!

My grandfather worked for Huey (Long), so let me just say that ya’ll in South Carolina don’t know the meaning of the word “nutjob”! Pulllease!!! Y’all are just minor leaguers up there! :)
I will say this, however; every public school child had books and pencils when Huey was guv.

Whwehh Thats a relief. I am planning an Appalachian Trail hike myself . I was getting worried as to any nutjobs on the trail.

Funny is that I was also thinking of going via argentina.

Got to see some hot Gauchos.

What makes you believe he would self destruct like this? Sorry but even Sanford is not this dumb. I smell something that stinks and it has nothing to do with an affair. An outspoken critic against Obama’s stimulus bill, his unease with this admin and the power it wields over each state and he makes a public confession about an affair? Sorry the stench is suffocating and I for one cannot be sold this convenient and oddly timed self destruction. Something else far more nefarious happened that FORCED him to make this statement today. What, he just decided to TELL the world about this? No one was blackmailing him or pressuring him? Right and I have several bridges I can sell you. I would like to know what really happened to him while he was “missing”. This is absurd and everyone is falling for it.

While I maintain that this sort of thing is really
between a man and a woman,

THIS MAKES ME SEE RED:

The governor was not known as a moralist but has frowned on infidelity and as a congressman voted to impeach President Bill Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky affair.

“He lied under a different oath, and that’s the oath to his wife,” Mr. Sanford said at the time on CNN. “So it’s got to be taken very, very seriously.”

And, BTW, John Edwards was way worse in his criticism of Bill Clinton, on TWO occasions.
I can’t be bothered even to look it up anymore…

Republican or Democrat, they are ALL THE SAME

Comment by CentralMass | 2009-06-25 12:30:06

This has zip to do with Obama or either party. Sanford’s infidelity is the issue. His wife throwing him out of the house and him going AWOL for a week is the issue. He is the cause of his own problems.

Defending him by pointing out 1000 other scumbags who “cheated” or blaming it on politicial treachery doesn’t cut it. Neither party could find the moral high grouind with a GPS unit.
