Maybe If We Leave It To The Women?

I got an email recently from an organization that has impressed me, VoteVets.org. As their name implies, they work hard on behalf of our veterans. They work not just on behalf of our veterans, but all those currently serving in the military. The email was on the issue of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which VoteVets.org wants repealed, and has been actively pursuing to achieve that end. You know I could not agree more.

So, I was reading the email, thinking, “hey, this is a really nice email. I wonder who wrote it?” And then I got to just who it was. Check it out:

The military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is an unjust, outdated, and harmful rule that violates the civil rights of some of our bravest, most heroic men and women.

That’s why I have been working, along with my colleagues in the Senate and so many of you, to overturn this wasteful and destructive policy.

Today, I have great news: Senator Carl Levin, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, has agreed to hold the first Senate hearings on repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell this Fall.

We have to prepare for these hearings, so I’m launching a nationwide call to action and need the help of everyone at VoteVets.org. My goal is to get thousands of people to stand with me and show that this country is ready to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Click here to help end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” I want to show my colleagues that America is ready to do the right thing.

Numerous military leaders are already telling us that this policy should be reversed. Having lost over 13,000 of our best and brightest to this policy, including over 800 in “mission critical” areas such as 10% of our Arabic and Farsi speakers, and wasting nearly $200 million in training and recruitment costs, the time for change is now.

We must all join together now and speak up on behalf of the brave men and women who only want to serve their country.

The announcement of hearings this fall is great news and a critical milestone on the road to repeal. But our work is not yet done.

Click here to help end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

I need your support right away, but moreover, I need you to share our call to action with your friends and colleagues who want to repeal this policy, too. Earning the broadest support possible is the only way to convey the message this Fall that the American people want to undo this harmful policy.

I want to thank VoteVets.org for helping to lead the fight to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Together, I am sure that we can make America stronger and bring equality to our Armed Services.

Sincerely,
Kirsten Gillibrand
U.S. Senator

Paid for by VoteVets.org PAC and Authorized by Gillibrand for Senate

Dang, I know, right? She’s following in Hillary Clinton’s footsteps! I am not being sarcastic when I say that New Yorkers should be very proud that Gillibrand has followed Clinton’s lead, and is taking up one of the issues important to Secretary Clinton. Good for her; good for US, good for the U.S.

And I received another email recently. This time about Secretary of State Clinton. It was a petition request to thank Secretary Clinton for all of her work on behalf of women and children, sponsored by the United Nations Foundation through care2.com. Nice, right? And about damn time, too:

Thank Secretary Clinton for Protecting Women’s Rights
Target: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
Sponsored by: United Nations Foundation

A nation’s economic health is directly impacted by the health, education and workforce opportunities of its women. Yet the current economic crisis is overshadowing critical discussions about women’s rights, putting women and girls worldwide at greater risk.

Fortunately, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton continues to champion women’s rights on an international stage, and has drawn much-needed attention and funding for family planning and reproductive health issues – both critical to women’s long-term success and welfare.

Under Secretary Clinton’s leadership, a new day is dawning for the world’s women and girls. The Administration has requested a considerable increase over last year’s assistance for family planning and reproductive health programs, overturned the Global Gag rule, and established the first Office for Women and Girls and an Office of Global Women’s Issues in the White House and State Department.

Send a letter
thanking Secretary Clinton for her dedication to women’s rights and empowerment – and for her work in improving women’s lives around the world.

The letter they have written is quite nice, and you can add your own two cents worth to thank Secretary Clinton for her lifelong work toward women’s equality.

Oh, and one last thing, and this has nothing to do with an email. It’s more of a question, really. Why is it that Lucia Whalen, the woman who made the 911 call in Cambridge for another woman, who has been threatened, called a racist, and generally had her life turned upside down by being a good citizen, has not been invited to the Beer-Fest at the White House tonight? I’m just wondering - it seems to me that she at least deserves a damn beer after all she has gone through, including having to hire an attorney. I guess it’s “Men Only” and she is, after all, just a woman. No need for HER to get an apology from anyone, apparently. So, while we now know the beer of choice for Obama, Gates, and Crowley, we know Whalen wasn’t invited. Nope:

White House officials declined to respond to questions whether Whalen should be invited as well.

Uh, yeah, no - no more mention of Ms. Whalen attending.

Here’s what I think should happen. I think Secretary of State Clinton should invite Ms. Whalen out for drinks (in whatever form that takes be it cappuccinos, wine, what-have-you). Then they can discuss the various and sundry ways in which the Old Boys’ Club is alive and well. Oh, and what it feels like to be saddled with a horrible moniker like, “Racist,” when one is nothing of the kind.

And I have one last question if that happens: Can I come?

Maybe If We Leave It To The Women?

Hell yes! The men have been running things since time immemorial and not doing much of a job if you look at the results. I say let the women run everything. Frankly, I don’t think it’s possible for them to do worse.
It’s a win-win for the men, too: they’d be out of the ‘hot seat’ and the women would have to give up complaining about what a bad job the men were doing.
Hmmm… but then there would be the inevitable comments on ‘cleaning up the mess’ damn!Just no way to keep out of the line of fire it seems…

LOL - And nope - no way to stay out of the fire, Craig!

Joe Scar has sounded off on how horrible it is for Obama to be called a “racist” by Beck. Can someone pull up all the video on Obama and Joe calling the Clintons racists or playing the race card on them? Not to mention how the race card was played on anyone and everyone during the takeover of the Presidency. Sick of the whole damn bunch of them. May they all go hell for cheating us out of Hillary …………….

Joe Scarborough appeared to really like Hillary. He always called her “his girlfriend”. I know he admired her political skills. MSNBC is the Obama network. Joe is just a tool like the rest of them but I don’t remember him calling the Clintons racist and I used to watch him a lot before they turned the show into that crazy look of the Brady Bunch. Now I see them all on screen and I think “Brady Bunch” and can’t take any of them seriously at all. Mika’s father was on Obama’s team but her brother was also on McCain’s team. I can’t stand her and I like Joe’s personality but that’s about it.

Joe only started to like Hillary after he vilified her along with all of his guests and it was too late for her to take her earned position as the Democratic Nominee. He sat all day Saturday during the SC primary vilifying Bill as a racist for indicating Jesse Jackson won SC. Then when Hillary declared she had the “white working class” - again the racist bullshit. He is an ass hole - calling her his girlfriend now is too little too late.

Oh, and I should really add this: Obama is more an elitist than a racist. It’s not about race. It’s about the elite and then everyone else! Most of us fall into the everyone else category. People that think Obama is doing something noble like standing up for race just don’t get it. He divides this country with these remarks but it’s really his elitist attitude that I hear. If you didn’t go to Harvard or Yale or heaven forbid you have to get your hands dirty for a living, you aren’t a part of this elite crowd.

There’s an excellent post this week over at Black Agenda Report about this very thing - check it out! Includes a very interesting take on Prof. Gates’s own elitism, which I haven’t really heard discussed.

Just saw a picture of the “beer fest/photo op” and guess who came for a beer? Non other than motor mouth Joe Biden. I guess they didn ‘t want it to look too much like Obama and Gates ganging up on Crowley. But invite a woman? Don’t think so. I wonder if Gates and Obama asked after the health of Crowley’s mother? I’d like an invite to the more enjoyable and productive wine fest with Hillary.

Let’s hope Sen Gillibrand is serious about following in Hillary’s footsteps. It’s past time to remove the restrictions on citizens of this country who serve honorably and ask for nothing more than equality.

Hillary never forgets her promise to have our backs or fails to bring attention to women’s issues where ever she goes. Thank you Rev Amy and thank you Hillary.

The host on Countdown just called Sarah Palin “Miss Wasilla” - fucking a88wipes!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-07-31 08:45:29

Was that David Schuster? The same one who called Hillary a pimp, and Chelsea a whore?? If so, I GUESS you could call that an improvement. Ahem.

No, it was the English guy that is a frequent misogynist on the show!

Ah, yes - Richard Wolffe? The one with the “biography” of Obama (that’s more like a work of fiction)?

The Palin comment plays into the elitist thing: Palin entered the contest for the scholarship money and was able to get going with her education without help from her parents. Back then, it was one of the few ways women could access that kind of cash without elitist connections such as those that financed Obama’s hootie-tootie schoolin’

If it happens may I come as well? Nothing would please me more than celebrating ‘women leaders’ at the summit that disses the members of the ‘old boys’ club.’

‘Til then, cheers Hillary and Kirsten.

You betcha, CG!! Maybe we should plan it and see if we can get THEM to come? :-)

Good news on Senator Gillibrand and Secretary Clinton.

Once again Obama shows his opinion on women. She just didn’t matter to him. Maybe Bill Maher or David Letterman would like to mock her.

Amazing.

i’ve been sitting on this thought for a week:
Gates engaged in an act civil disobedience in which arrest was the goal. The witness (chauffeur), the police, the video. I think the only thing that was missing is the surrounding drama to draw attention to the “police action”.

Now I don’t think it began intentionally as an act of civil disobedience. But I believe with all my heart that Gates - whose familiarity with Alinsky et al - took advantage of the situation and made it a civil disobedience act.

There were many more victims than Whalen. But I agree that she ought to be honored for her phone call rather than abused and dismissed as an afterthought. (or even less than that).

And I am so envious of all you who have Senator Gillibrand. I’m stuck with Roland Burris - and most likely Alexi Giannoulias - oilsoc’s water carrier - will be next.

VoteVets is a wonderful organization comprised of a superb quality of veterans and leaders who continually lead the charge on doing the right thing and supporting the right people. I’m delighted to see Sen. Gillibrand working with them.
