Big Fish is Watching!

Oh boy, here we go. The name-calling and fear-inducing tactics used by Obama’s campaign team against anyone at odds with its lock-step ideas are at it again. This time it’s much, much worse.
It was bad enough being called a “racist” for supporting Hillary Clinton. And one who has problems with the current hastily-thought out health care plan is now referred to as a “deather” or part of a “right-wing, organized conspiracy” or a “lobbyist for the insurance companies.” But the next perilous step has just been taken—each of us is supposed to report anything “fishy” about what people are saying about health care directly to the White House.
The term “fishy” was not explicitly defined, but it can be reasonably assumed that it means anything that opposed the Obama/Congressional health care plan. See for yourselves here.
The most frightening book I ever read was George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (first published in 1949). This best-seller portrayed the oppressiveness of a regime defined by constant surveillance and consistent withdrawal of individuals’ rights. I had nightmares about “Big Brother” watching, hovering over my every move, pressing down on my daily life, forcing me to become a cog in a wheel not of my own design or influence. This book more than any other–even more so than Brave New World or We or Fahrenheit 451—haunted me.
When the year 1984 came and went, I felt relief. We were safe. It was just a book of fiction. I didn’t then realize that a time would come when technology could make this all readily possible, that privacy would be something I only used to experience, and that we are now supposed to turn in those who do not agree with The One.
We do need health care reform. We need to bring the insurance companies and Big Pharma into the realm of compassion for sick people. But, remember, I have read every page of this monstrosity now under consideration. This proposed bill is a mess—and I worry more about the devil I don’t know, especially when it wants my email address.
End Note: As this story spreads, I expect the White House will be scared back behind its dark curtain and change the message. But just know it IS true.

I bought “1984″ in 1983. I wanted to read it before it happened.
O boy! The American vocabulary is enriched by the day! I’ve already accessed the email address, and have been busily snitching on my fellow Americans. I sent the whitehouse a link to the Declaration of Independence, because the language is pretty dissenting and “fishy”.
Others are mailing in links to the 1st amendment. Right to petition for redress of grievances and all that. Those are very fishy and anti-Obama sentiments that might stir up an unruly mobbity townhall.
I encourage all my comrades to do the same. Anyone have an email addy for Thomas Jefferson? I want to report that fishy fish. He smells fishy to me. And mobbity, too.

Yup. Gathering information on dissenting free speech is ILLEGAL for the whitehouse to do, period.
Of course, they could claim that they are not “keeping a record”. But if they are not, if they merely read and erase the emails (yeah, right) then how do they expect to use the info? The program is useless unless they intend to KEEP and analyze the info somehow.
I watched Major Garret say on the news that by law, the WH has to keep a “record” of what is sent to them by citizens. That is why he is baffled by Gibbs pathetic excuse that they don’t keep a record. His question was, what’s the goal and why bother?
I also heard that “by law” these citizen documents, emails, etc., have to be kept in the government’s archive.
Regardless of what the Gibbler says, this is a huge snafu by a WH mouthpiece.

I know that you are a very smart person by the way you write. If you read the Healthcare Bill and do not like it, that makes me wonder if the politicians bothered to read it and when they did not understand it, or understood it but since it made no sense made themselves wrong and did not want to look stupid so they just went along, hoping it would make them look smart.
We were afraid of Bush- Cheney and his people and how they treated everyone as “you are either with us or against us” so we voted the Republicans out for that good looking guy with the friendly smile, thinking now we would be safe. We refused to notice that his tactics to get elected were even then as bad as Bush- Cheney because he looked so friendly and caring. Some even thought that he had to do it to get elected, but once the election was over he and his people would stop acting that way. Well guess what? Obama thinks he is still in campaign mode, and if it worked to get him elected why would anyone think he and his people would stop doing what they saw as working against people who were even more qualified then Obama?
What happened to dialogue and people’s right to protest and that their protests must be heard by those in power?
As I wrote to my legislators, when the Boston Tea party happened, the King of England probably said that this was just the act of a mob and really not how the people felt. Look what happened to England’s control of the people.

Really! I am truly impressed. I can’t say that I have read even a word of it. While I don’t doubt at all that the proposed legislation is a mess, I am not at all sure it matters exactly what it says. Government and the law seem to have reinvented themselves over about the last 25 years (since 1984 at least) so if there is the slightest question of what the law intended, then it will mean whatever the party in power wants it to mean. Prime example is when the Supreme Court of the US handed GW Bush the State of Florida and the 2000 Presidential election, and them came all of Bush’s signing statements and then came the Obama fraud. I could just go on and on.
Anyway, when it comes to health, finances, life, and death that will without doubt affect everyone of us directly, then we will probably get worked up about it. And Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama and friends will have to do some homework and do a much better job of explaining what those 1000 pages of legalese really mean.

Both FOX News and Lou Dobbs were all over this story tonite. Finally it made it’s way into the mainstream media. Ed Henry, the White House reporter on CNN said that even though they have been criticized for their actions, they refuse to take the link down off the flag@whitehouse.gov site, claiming that people need to be EDUCATED about the healthcare program and it the kind of a “truth squad” he had when he ran for office. The words “tuth squad” alone, send chills up my spine.
Many friends I have spoken to about this find it very reminiscent of days gone by in the late 30’s and early 40’s in another country.
Truth squads are fair game when you are campaigning for office. They are NOT okay once you have attained office, and have the weight of the federal govt behind you.

I didn’t even think it was okay during the primary. Truth squads were used to ridicule and overpower free speech and the truth-telling of Hillary Clinton. Looks now like it was a trial run for this kind of BS.

As a supporter of single payer health care, I think this “mess” is actually going to hurt the effort for health care reform in the long run more than help anything. It will give critics all the ammunition they need to say, “See–it doesn’t work!” The backlash is already beginning, and it’s going to slam the Dem Party in 2010, and possibly 2012. It all depends on the economy.
I think that’s right. I have never seen this much anger against Democrats, not even in 1994 when they lost 53 seats. I can see them losing 60 house seats in 2010.

As Obama drops in the polls, I worry what disaster his team of thugs are going to produce to justify arresting citizens who have dared to challenge their supreme wisdom. Maybe I’m just experiencing a bit of paranoia with all the similarities between Orwell’s 1984 and Obama’s administration, but I’m half expecting some cooked up event where citizens speaking out against this bill or some other issue will be rounded up.

How can someone oppose the “Obama/Congressional” health care plan when either none exists or there are three or four different ones?
The administration people obviously want to know what the lies are…about forced end of life decisions, about federal funding of abortion, about putting bureaucrats between the people and their doctors (more, that is, than the private insurers already do), and whatever else the right wing comes up with.
This isn’t 1984. It’s life and death for millions of people.

In college I had to do a research paper on McCarthyism in the 1950’s. I had no idea how much damage could be done by innuendos and slander and outright lies directed at decent people. And even though McCarthy was a virtual nobody before he began his campaign to destroy, he played on the red scare to silence anyone who dared challenge him.
Where is a senator who’ll stand up and ask, “Have you no shame, Mr. Obama?”

the elderly are already covered by government-run health insurance. the proposed reforms aren’t about changing Medicare. this is exactly the kind of misinformation that the Democrats are trying to combat.
There are cuts to Medicare being proposed to help pay for Obamacare, and he is suggesting an executive-appointed board to make Medicare changes in the future WITHOUT going through Congress.

Well, I understood that the current plans don’t change the existing laws, which I thought excluded federal funding of abortions. But these understandings could be all wet.

Pat, thanks for talking about “1984″. I read the book when I was still in college - a long, long time ago and before the real year of 1984. Like you, I also felt we were “home safe” when the year 1984 came and went with no totalitarian takeover of our government. It was only with the democratic primaries and then the general election that shades of the novel began to resurface in my mind and now of course the latest “proclamation” from the White House.
I have read that many great works of science fiction have prophetic elements in them - that the authors either consciously or unconsciously are able to look into the future and see possible events and trends. The good news is that “prophecy” is not the same as “pre-determination”. Armed with the knowledge of “negative possibilities” because of a prophetic work like “1984″ and with facts available from more than a few sources because of the internet, radio, and television, we can and should protests against totalitarian tactics on the part of our government. We also have the power to vote out of office all those congressional representatives who refuse to listen to their constituents. If certain Democratic members of Congress continue to ignore their constituents and pass the health care bill as it stands now, they will soon find themselves out of a job. 2010 is next year. All members of the House of Representatives are up for re-election or election next year.
Wise comment Cathy in Ks. Yes, I couldn’t believe that Brave New World was written in 1925, as many of those concepts started being part of our real world much earlier on. But ytou are right–these authors gave us a glimpse of what the future could be. We keep forgetting taht Democracy is a fragile arrangement that absolutey requires integrity and an alert citizenry.

But every day we don’t act, Americans watch their premiums rise three times faster than wages, small businesses and families are pushed towards bankruptcy, and 14,000 people lose their coverage entirely. The cost of inaction is simply too much for the people of this nation to bear.
So yes, fixing this crisis will not be easy. Our opponents will attack us every day for daring to try. It will require time, and hard work, and there will be days when we don’t know if we have anything more to give. But there comes a moment when we all have to choose between doing what’s easy, and doing what’s right.
This is one of those times. And moments like this are what this movement was built for. So, are you ready?

Most of the gung-ho Obama supporters I knew have gone back to their previous lives of political disinterest and are, instead, trying to make it through the month. I am not sure how pervasive that is, but we shall see.
And if they can come up with a reform that makes sense, I will read it again. I am not against health care reform, only cures that are worse than the disease.
Here is another one (and WHY do all their emails beg for donations?)
Members of Congress have been home for just a few days, and they’re already facing increased pressure from insurance companies, special interests, and partisan attack organizations that are spending millions to block health insurance reform.
These groups are using scare tactics and spreading smears about the President’s plan for reform, trying to incite constituents into lashing out at their representatives and disrupting their events.
The goal of these disruptions is for a few people to get a lot of media attention and hijack the entire public discourse. If they succeed, all Americans — Democrats, Republicans, and Independents — will continue to struggle under the broken status quo.
It’s up to us to show Congress that those loudly opposing reform are a tiny minority being stirred up by special interests, and that a huge majority strongly supports enacting real health insurance reform in 2009.
Your representative, Rob Andrews, has been fighting hard for real health insurance reform. Can you call the local office in Woodbury? Let the person who answers know that you’re a constituent. Then tell them: “Thanks for working to enact real health insurance reform this year. Voters like me support your efforts.”

According to the Privacy Act created after Watergate, the WH must keep every bit of correspondence that comes in by email (not sure about faxes or letters). However, it is illegal for them to compile the lists so they have created a conundrum for themselves which they don’t seem to care two hoots about.

This…THIS is why I couldn’t stomach Obama in 2008. In the end, it wasn’t racism nor feminism nor primary fraud nor even Obama’s nebulous origins that turned me against him. Gosh, Mari. It’s back to the campaign. When I was very active for Hillary, the link to the Google map to my home was posted on an Obama blog.
Nothing bad ever happened to me or my family, but it is that feeling of watching over your shoulder that is both uncomfortable and not good for one’s mental and physical health.
But for whatever reason, it just made me dig my heels in deeper.
Mari, that’s really serious. If I were you, I’d inform the police, and write a letter to the editor, so the community knows what is happening. Shining the light on them will handicap their thuggish behavior.
Hey gang, On Monday morning an old friend is having surgery; just diagnosed with breast cancer metastasized to lung and brain. She will have the brain tumor removed first. She is a former teacher, published writer of local history. If Obamacare was in place today, they would be giving her morphine and end of life advise. We, of course, would prefer she explore all options and continue her creative, happy life of continuing contributions.

Sorry if this is repeat information- but have you all heard about the New Hampshire man who was visited by the Secret Service because he posted a comment in his newspaper on-line forum quoting his state’s motto “Live Free or Die”?
What the heck? What’s next? Round up everyone in NH because they run around with “Live Free or Die” on their goverment issued license plates? OMG the motto is also on flags that fly ouside every goverment and school building in New Hampshire. Howard Dean obviously has a mess on his hands. The Granite State (or is that Vermont) has obviously been over run the right-wing lunatic fringe!!!!!!! Call in the National Guard- but not New Hamshire’s because they also have been indoctrinated into this radical philosophy. Astroturf organizations claim the motto is rooted in our nation’s history. They will say anything to promote their disinformation to the public.

We do have every right to be concerned with what this Administration has proposed. Not just the health care debacle but asking citizens to report back on fellow citizens. It really is right out of 1984.
The White House is exempt from the Freedom of Information Act so we will not know what information was obtained and for what purpose for a full ten years. And that gives them plenty of time to do who knows what.
This all reminds me of the Nixon era. Except that even Nixon did not blatantly ask neighbors to rat out other neighbors.
If any of those thugs come to my door with harrassment in mind, I’ll be ready with my camera to capture their mugs for posterity. In fact, I may just follow them down the street and snap a shot of their license plates, too.
