If You Think Sexism Is Not an Issue Anymore …
By Bronwyn's Harbor on August 14, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Current Affairs
This video was created by The New Agenda, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary this week! Take a look at this excellent synopsis:
Here’s the video’s description, which also describes the mission of The New Agenda: “A look at how far women have come in politics in the last 50 years, and at why we still have much further to go.”
The New Agenda is unique in that the group supports all women, regardless of their political affiliations. The New Agenda has stood up for politicians from Sarah Palin to Hillary Clinton and, yes, even Nancy Pelosi when she was subjected to a sexist attack.
It’s time for a women’s rights group that does not require a political litmus test for membership, and The New Agenda fills that void.
Given what happened in this past Election cycle, we need an organization that is willing to stand up for all women. Happy Anniversary, New Agenda! May the necessity for your work be short-lived…

Yes indeed! Happy First Year Anniversary, New Agenda. Although there are women politicians who I do not agree with and even a couple I dislike, attack on the content of their message, not their plumbing!
YES!! I for one agree with the stand on womens issues. I don’t understand how women can or let other women be torn down by sexist attacks. I really don’t care for Sarah Palin’s stand or Coulter or especially Nancy Pelosi but I refuse to try to attack them on personal issues. I think it really comes down to old fashioned values, like treating people, all people, in the manner you want to be treated. Wouldn’t that be great? We could still fight like crazy for our issues while still respecting the rights of others.
Hillary is a woman that I very much respect and I believe I haven’t ever heard her do what many far right and many, many Obama supporters do to her. you go on blogs and they just go right to the insults about her or the others mentioned and MSNBC is like a bunch of spitting snakes in this issue.

If the gop use this issue and run more women it could make a difference.
The democrats sold women down the river this last election and we do not forget or forgive.
WOMEN WITH INTELLIGENCE AND EXPERIENCE, MEN WHO SUPPORT THEM AND COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY ALWAYS
PUMAS,BUBBAS,EQUALISTS AND THOSE PEOPLE RULE
helenk,
Yes, I’ve gotten to the point that, since I am now an “unaffilliated” voter, I will be sexist and vote vor every female candidate I find, no matter what party she represents. If two women are running against each other, then I will look into their background and their beliefs and choos the one I like the most.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/14/afghanistan-womens-rights-rape
is this what we are fighting for in Afghanistan? If so WHY?
With this law any woman from Afghanistan should be granted asylum if she asks for it.
WOMEN WITH INTELLIGENCE AND EXPERIENCE,MEN WHO SUPPORT THEM AND COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY ALWAYS
PUMAS,EQUALISTS AND THOSE PEOPLE RULE
So no quarter hasnt had the first story about hillary blowing her tubes out at a high school student in africa for asking a question about bill. Not a peep… the”top” diplomat loses her cool at a silly question….and she wants to negotiate with foreign heads of state?….. amazing, the lack of posting on this topic. is quite revealing…. what a huge chip on hillary’s shoulders she is carrying around….
You come by to trash Hillary on every thread. She is doing so much important work on behalf of women and children. In a completely sexist country, she is asked a demeaning question and stands up for herself. Typical that you would have a problem with that. Hell, even those on HuffPo who were so nasty to her were defending her for saying what she said.
Try reading this article for a little perspective…
http://warner.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/12/hillary-fights-a-tide-of-trivialization/
Right on, Ani - well said! After the misogynistic.sexist crap she (and all women) endured during the past election, for her to be asked a question like that with the whole POINT of her trip being the treatment of women, was insulting. I don’t blame her one bit for being testy at that question.
(I’m not sure I buy the whole “mistranslated” story, either. Unless the words for “president” and “husband” are the same, and “Obama” and “Bill” are the same in their language.)
And isn’t it amazing, mark, that the story your referring to is the one the MSM chose to run and comment on ad nauseum, while overlooking anything else the SoS is doing?
But you don’t have to worry. The Democratic Hillary-haters are doing their best to cut the woman down. But here’s the thing: she keeps on keeping on, despite what anyone says.
So please, save the sarcasm for the Republican rags. Or better yet, go to the Far Left blogs. They love trashing Hillary Clinton, too.
As for blowing her tubes? She was asked a ridiculously rude question and she reacted genuinely. How terrible of her! Were you as aghast when Cheney blew his top on a number of occasions? And John McCain has an infamous temper. Any OMGs?
Didn’t think so.
A demeaning question? thats a laugh.. She lost her cool period… as for cheney and john mccain. they arent the country’s “top diplomat” your comparison is rather weak. Its pretty simple: young african high school student asks question, hillary unloads on the guy, because of the massive boulder-sized chip on her shoulder. as walter cronkite said “and thats the way it is”
Lost her cool!!
She said what any self respecting woman would and should say. She spoke for me. It made me very proud.
You seem to be a bit of a sexist piggy. Imagine if that same dingbat of a student ask Obama what he thought President Bill Clinton thought about a topic.
Obama would say ” I am the president, not Bill Clinton. You want me to channel Bill! If you want my opinion, I tell you.”
Sounds about right and you, mark, would not be here saying Obama lost his cool.
Well said. Exactly right.
Some men never seem to understand the outrage of being on the receiving end of sexism.
If an idiot like Chris Matthews, for example, were ever on the reeceiving end of the filth he dishes out, he’d be curled up in the fetal position, crying in the corner. I watched the video. Her response could hardly be construed as blowing her stack except by a man who thinks women should be seen and not heard.
She was angry and I loved it. Everyone knows she arranged the release of the two reporters in NK. I love Hillary because she was willing to go where no politician has gone before: She put their welfare above her ego and watched as the media completely ignored her role in the release.
Some smart-assed kid asked her what her husband thought about an issue (I don’t believe there was a “mistake”). Bill listened to HER advice when he was president.
Peggy Sue, you forgot Obama’s temper tantrums. He has had a number of them, often glossed over by the MSM. Oh, they might put a little line here or there abt them, but then they immediately sweep them under the rug and call him “even keeled.” There are any NUMBER of photos of him glowering t people, and even youtube videos of him getting irritated with people.
So, naturally, it makes sense that the MSM, and people like this, are harping on this one time after Clinton had been traveling for DAYS, had heard numerous stories abt unspeakable acts, and met with women and children who had been tortured, raped, and brutalized. So, yeah - focus on THIS. Pathetic.
Right! Obama gave Hillary the finger, “dusted” her off his shoulder and “wiped” her off his shoe, his passive aggressive fits are ignored by the MSM as well.
Oh course, you’re absolutely right Amy. I just get sick and tired of the Hillary bashing–from the Right and the Left.
As you rightly say: It is pathetic. And predictable.
I did see a report on this incident on NQ’s scrolling section on Clinton. There was some confusion about whether it was the interpreter’s fault or the questioner’s fault. My understanding is that the questioner spoke with her after to say he mean the current president while the interpreter thought he meant Bill. In any case, the incident ended amicably.
And….if that’s the worst she’s done for women, it’s pretty good. We are individuals, not an extension of our husbands.
Amen, Diana L.C. And thanks for clearing that up for me. Appreciate it!
mark
It sounds like you would be happier in Afghanistan.
The new law sounds like something you would support.
You and Chris and Keith sound like the three stoodges

sorry helenk, I have no idea what you are talking about… new law? afghanistan? huh? what planet are you on?
mark
look up and read my earlier post on this at 12:00.05

Mark,
I know you think you played nice by saying Hillary had a chip on her shoulder, but you didn’t respond about how it was wrong for any male to brush imaginary chips off or to scowl at audiences, etc. So the only thing I see is that you really don’t like the woman to be human; and thus you label her in your mind as the bitch.
I will from now on refer to you in my responses to your sexist posts refer to you as MCP. In case you aren’t old enough to remember, in the “olden” days of the feminist movement, you call or insinuate that a women is a “bitch,” we call you an MCP (i.e., male chauvinist pig). Tit for tat, so to speak. Though, personally, since I know a lot about dogs, I do know the respect male dogs give to the alpha bitches, and deservedly so. I just also know that males humans think bitches are bad things.
If you prefer the MSM perspective of Hillary Clinton, why are you here? This is the blogosphere. Get used to it.
Mark, The question that was asked was rude and no doubt asked by a young girl who has suffered the brutality of assholes like you.
Clinton has brain and DOES not need to ask her husband what to do. I am sure Bill Clinton would be the first to agree.
From the Independent, UK Friday August 14, 2009:
Title
Hilary Clinton wins hearts as she concludes African tour
No comment needed.Just read the article.
Mark, I think that you’re going way overboard with the hyperbole.
She was irritated at a sexist question. She drew a boundary - she let those students, being raised in a very patriarchal and sexist culture, know that she wasn’t going to demure to *their* cultural understanding of women’s role.
In my field of work, all I ever hear about is how Americans must be culturally sensitive to every other culture. There’s never any indication that other cultures might try to develop some cultural sensitivity to US. Well, I think this was such a lesson - to interact with Hillary, you need to treat her with the respect she has earned, even if your own country sees women as stones under their feet.
She didn’t flip out, she didn’t get in his face, she didn’t challenge him to a gun duel, she didn’t run out of the room pulling her hair out - no, she simply got a little prickly.
And that prickliness was designed to be a “teaching moment” for that college student - sans beer.
ASS!! you are the equal of a limbaugh or an obot either or, are just as bad as the other. why does Hillary threaten you? afraid of strong INTELLIGENT WOMEN? AT least Hillary has the guts to say what she means instead of swaying in the wind like some.
Sorry….she seems to have a huge chip on her shoulder. not exactly “top” diplomat material
Yeah, because flipping off a Senator after she hands your ass to you in a debate is such top notch material.
LOL
That huge chip is Obama’s. Mr Glass Jaw himself.
Oh and do you recall him having to brush his shoulders off to try and get that huge chip off?
My impression at the time was that he was equating her to dandruff (something with no value, something easy to get away from you).
To me, it was like he was saying, “She’s nothing, and BRUSHBRUSH, presto, she’s gone!”
(remember, that was after she annilated him at te debate - he must have been really freaked - his narcissistic rage must have been in full swing!)
I was just playing on both Mark’s and Obama’s CDS with that moment.
But definitely that is what it means and more…..
The song is also tied to “99 Probelms” and were put out together several times. Both being released on The Black Album but also in a Part 1 and Part 2 releases and on vinyl.
As you see with the cover art. It is labeled “JayZ Dirt off Your Shoulder/99 Probelms”.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirt_off_Your_Shoulder
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99_Problems
The cover for Part 1

The cover for Part 2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jay-Z_-_99_Problems%2BDirt_Off_Your_Shoulder_(CD2).jpg
So when he dusts her off the mind also goes to…. “I got 99 Probelms but a bitch ain’t one.”
You know how Obama is, can’t say what he means and doesn’t mean what he says. That display spoke volumnes though.
you think I support obama? now thats funny
Exactly where did I say you supported him?
Your CDS was just placed in context with the “top” diplomat of the land.
News flash, Mark - you seem it odd that Hillary, an SOS, has a chip on her shoulder. I, myself, wouldn’t term it as a chip on the shoulder, but whatever it is, many, many women have it.
Are you a man? Can you just try to imagine living in a world where being a man was second-class status, where you fought your whole life for social justice and equal rights, so that your son wouldn’t have it as hard as you did? Years and years later of all that work, and now you’re in a country that is even more “backward” than the one you’re living in, and someone asks what your WIFE (the favored gender) thinks of something - you really don’t think you’d be a little frustrated and peeved?
If you ask me she was too nice.
I would have let him have it.
Okay, you’ve expressed your OPINION - and that’s all it is, Mark.
Now, hear the collective, SO THE EFF WHAT?
Nice video, happy birthday New Agenda.
I became interested in Ellie from Mayberry and I dont remember the episode - so I googled and here is what it says:
“When it becomes clear that things are getting out of hand, Ellie withdraws her candidacy. When Opie boldly announces that the men showed the women who’s really boss, Andy realizes the problems with his anti-female attitude and sets out make ammends. Allthough the outcome of the election is never revealed in the episode, Ellie is part of the town council in later episodes.”
So Ellie won. That made me happy even if they sort of dodged it.
Great video from 60s Griffith show! Thank you.
WE SURE HAVEN’T COME TOO LONG A WAY, BABES!
Wonderful to see Hillary and Kay together! That’s the way to go to the future!
CONGRATS TO NEW AGENDA’s Amy Suskind…what a GREAT JOB FOR US ALL!!!
Just another reason MSM is dying. They cannot even talk about over 50% of the population without stereotypes, sarcasm and condescension.
