Finally, Someone Is Talking Some Common Sense

There has been lots of talk recently about the Health Care Bill, what it contains, how it will be run, and who it will cover. Many folks claim that since the government does such a bang-up job with Medicare, it should be no problem for them to pick up millions and millions more people with no problem. Uh huh. Sure. Here’s the thing – Medicare/Social Security is fraught with problems of its own, and is, by no means, a perfect program. Ask any senior who has had to figure out just which Supplemental Program they should get, and how they are going to pay for it, if you don’t believe me.

One other issue that has just arisen was detailed in my local paper recently,”Millions TO Face Shrinking Checks; Trustees: No Cost Of Living Adjustment For Two Years.” It details how Social Security checks, for the first time since 1975, will get no “Cost of Living Adjustment.” None. Here are some of the more salient points:

By law, Social Security benefits cannot go down. Nevertheless, monthly payments would drop for millions of people in the Medicare prescription drug program because the premiums, which often are deducted from Social Security payments, are scheduled to go up slightly.

I will promise you, they count on that COLA,” said Barbara Kennelly, a former Democratic congresswoman from Connecticut who now heads the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. “To some people, it might not be a big deal. (Emphasis is mine.)

But to seniors, especially with their health care costs, it is a big deal.”

Cost of living adjustments are pegged to inflation, which has been negative this year, largely because energy prices are below 2008 levels.

Advocates say older people still face higher prices because they spend a disproportionate amount of their income on health care, where costs rise faster than inflation. Many also have suffered from declining home values and shrinking stock portfolios just as they are relying on those assets for income.

“For many elderly, they don’t feel that inflation is low because their expenses are still going up,” said David Certner, legislative policy director for AARP. “Anyone who has savings and investments has seen some serious losses.”

No kidding. But that sums it up nicely.

As does my fellow NQ writer, Bronwyn’s Harbor, in this post, “I’ve Changed My Mind About ‘Death Panels,‘” in which Bronwyn’s neighbor’s travails of the effects of no COLA are laid out in stark relief. The neighbor is being forced to choose between medicine and food, a horrible choice for any person, but especially one who has no other source of income.

It makes my head just swirl. Representative Mike Rogers details some other choices Americans will have to make. Or rather, choices that will be made for us, in one of the most common sense statements I have heard yet about the health care policy the Obama Administration is trying to institute, along with some actual provisions of the bill:

I don’t know to which party this man belongs, and I don’t much care. What I DO care about is that he seems to care about US, the average U.S. citizen. And I appreciate his calling out the Congress for its desire to over-function. That is to say, when the functional people have to work extra hard to compensate for the dysfunctional (as in not fully functioning, not mentally unstable or physically disabled) people. It does not bring up the dysfunctional people. On the contrary. All it does is pull down the fully functioning people (Rabbi Dr. Friedman discussed this issue frequently in his practice). It sounds like that is exactly the same thing Abraham Lincoln was saying, as quoted by Rep. Rogers noted above.

Choosing between food, shelter, and medicine as a result of government run programs sounds to me like programs that are not run to the benefit of the people. And that will bring all of us down. There has got to be a better way…

Maybe I’m missing something here, but the Dems control everything in DC. Can’t they put together a bill to ensure a COLA increase for SS? Is that so hard? It would be a slap on the back bi-partisan feel good thing.

They have no problem trying to pass special laws for Ted Kennedy, surely a COLA increase is not out of the question?

Comment by Obamastolemycounty | 2009-08-27 12:41:43

No, no, no. The dems are the ones who want the COLA to be zero. Zero wants everyone, but him to have zero. He thinks he’s King. I’m not sure what Pelosi thinks she is, asst. King? But no dems in Congress worry about it. This is their desire. Yes, if they wanted a bill, you know it would happen. They have the votes.

I hope we never again allow one party to have full control like this. We need to have the checks and balances.

Comment by beachnan | 2009-08-27 15:21:31

Is it really fair to paint all democrats in Congress as not caring about seniors? We need to stop the all democrats are good, and republicans are bad, and vice versa. That’s why as much as I dislike Obama and many of the Democratic leadership at this point, I still can’t stomach the likes of Rush Limbaugh and his ilk, as he always tries to lump everyone together. Our seniors deserve a COLA and it’s shameful that they are not giving them one.

Comment by Obamastolemycounty | 2009-08-27 16:14:08

I try and try to think of one democrat that I can tolerate (other than Hillary and I go back and forth on her now, too) and none come to mind. none. They all make me sick and I have watched them all act like they have lost their mind. My elected officials here are, Klobuchar (a turncoat), Ellison (a criminal), Franken (clown). Need I say more? The only people here I am comfortable voting for are Republicans, but I am not in their districts. Show me a dem who is not a turncoat and change my opinion if you can.

Comment by Obamastolemycounty | 2009-08-27 16:21:14

BTW, I campaigned for Klobuchar and then she fell in the Obama loves spell and now only sends form letters that have nothing to do with the issues you are questioning her about! She used to answer personally. Now rumor has it that the people behind Obama have promised her to be the first woman POTUS (and I have that from a reliable source in the party). I told the source that they are probably promising a dozen or more wome that!

You are correct. I activly dislike Limbaugh, but Glenn Beck had him on and together it was a good show. Scary but good, as in two more for our side who can speak to millions.

I plan on putting aside party, gender, race, religion and come together as patriots. D\Lets defend our Consitution, remove the problems from office and if, and I mean if, we overcome don’t ever not be vigilent.

I am no expert on Social Security, but I read yesterday that a COLA is tied automatically to inflation. If there is no measurable inflation – and there hasn’t been this past year – then there is no COLA. So, I don’t think it is due to an inability to fund a COLA but rather to the provisions of the Social Security law. I have no first hand knowledge. This is based on reading something on line – and you know how reliable that can be!

Comment by Gabi Lange | 2009-08-27 12:20:59

Thanks, RRR Amy. Always appreciate your articles. I am aghast at how this lack of COLA is going to affect many on retirement. And, on the other had, I do hear from a family member and a single friend, both of whom work 24/7, that they are very worried about when they retire, if they ever will be able to. Both of these women, who were Dems. have switched parties they are so fed up.

Oh yes, OT: Judas Bill Richardson is now cleared in the Fed’s probe. Orders came from D.C. Meanwhile, former SOS of NM has 50 indictments on some other issues. So odd how members of his admin. get bagged.

Comment by tzada | 2009-08-27 13:24:53

Someone made a valid point. He is appointing Czars because they do not have to be vetted. Of course on the other hand doesn’t seem like the Democratic majority cares much about that. I mean they swat things off as technicalities.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-08-27 14:12:50

Not only are they not vetted, tzada, but they have HUGE budgets – millions and millions of dollars EACH with no oversight. Bear in mind there are over 30 at this point. No oversight from Congress at all – nice job if you can get it, right?

Comment by tango | 2009-08-27 15:30:44

Exactly. Why even be in an appointed position when you can work in a Czar department probably making just as much money without that pesky Senate approval thing hanging over your head. That’s why the Obama Administration still has 50% of the positions unfilled. Could you imagine the cost it’s going to take to run the Obama government if they were ever to fill those appointed positions too?

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-08-27 16:37:32

I shudder to think. And interesting the route he has taken, isn’t it? I guess we shouldn’t be TOO surprised that he would take this backdoor route, should we? This is how he has gotten every political position he’s had thus far – skirting, cheating, finagling – add your own…

Comment by tzada | 2009-08-27 17:18:47

Isn’t that against the law? Some law? Someone to inforce it if there is? Will we lose this country without a whimper?

Dictators around the world are laughing in glee, waiting to come in a take a few states here and a few states there for their own. What states will Russia get? What states China? Ole Chevez gets the south and Castro gets Florida?

Comment by Peggy Sue | 2009-08-27 12:34:03

I think we’re seeing a pattern here: we can’t give COLA increases but we can give huge bailouts to insolvent banks and pretend the economy is hunkey-dorey. We can’t fashion a decent health care reform bill but we can make backroom deals with Big Pharma and insurance companies. We can’t break our reliance on foreign oil or even consider using our own natural resources to transition to green energy but we can develop a massive tax program and call it Cap and Trade. We can’t lower our debt but we can pass trillion dollar spending programs with money we don’t have. We can’t turn the unemployment numbers around but we can talk and smile about a “jobless” recovery.

It’s enough to make your head spin. And common sense has nothing to do with it. In fact to buy into this spiel you have to live in a world of reversals where up is down and left is right and crazy is perfectly acceptable.

Thanks for the article, Amy.

Comment by jbjd | 2009-08-27 14:07:38

PS, instead of bailouts we should start calling this what it is – money laundering.

Comment by Obamastolemycounty | 2009-08-27 14:17:07

you got that right!

What has occurred to me is that maybe Obama should just run another campaign to fund paying for the uninsured. Whoever gave this man almost a billion dollars to buy the White House for years can also pay for the uninsured in America. There you go, problem solved.

Thanks RRRA for providing this video. I checked and Congressman Rogers is a Republican from the 8th District which incudes Lansing, MI. I’m glad he’s injecting differences between US and European healthcare into the debate.

I read something interesting today via Drudge: Investor’s Business Daily reports the claim that infant mortality is higher in the US is bogus because all births are counted here whereas, for example, births in France don’t count preemies born before 26 weeks of gestation. Now, Drudge is decidedly conservative but at least he’s been posting articles that expose problems of European healthcare. While some are anecdotal, it’s still helpful especially since major media seem to be advocates of the current legislation.

This is a double negative for Seniors. I handle my mother’s finances for her and I’ve often comment that how she gets a COLA, but then rent and all of her utilites go up and drug prices, etc., each year all the increases add up to more than her COLA is anyway. Each year she is in the hole even more. this will really hurt. Her rent is a killer, but her only alternative is to go on welfare. She is appalled to think of it and I am afraid even if she did the states will run out of money soon. I don’t have extra room at my house for her and considered moving into a home with an extra bedroom and bath, but now because of the drop in my home value I owe more than it’s worth. I’m stuck where I am, unless I put her in the living room or kick out one of my kids, (14 and 18) who also can’t afford to live on their own right now. It sucks that our Government truly has no interest in helping the average citizen. If I could buy a larger house, I would take my poor mother in and wouldn’t that help the economy? I really despise Obama voters. Thank goodness I was not one of them. I would be beside myself right now, if I learned I was conned. I didn’t drink that evil kool aid, thank goodness.

Yeah. You are correct. Obama thought that he could buy seniors votes with a $250 check to SS recipitent all the while stealing 1/2 a trillion $$ out of the medicare fund. He seems to have crapped out. How dare he take money from the fund that has been paid in over a lifetime and that by law is required to be spent for medicare patients and try to spend it without our permission on something else. I am AA and I think the guy is nuts.

Section 431(a) of the bill says that the IRS must divulge taxpayer identity information, including the filing status, the modified adjusted gross income, the number of dependents, and “other information as is prescribed by” regulation. That information will be provided to the new Health Choices Commissioner and state health programs and used to determine who qualifies for “affordability credits.”

Section 245(b)(2)(A) says the IRS must divulge tax return details — there’s no specified limit on what’s available or unavailable — to the Health Choices Commissioner. The purpose, again, is to verify “affordability credits.”

Section 1801(a) says that the Social Security Administration can obtain tax return data on anyone who may be eligible for a “low-income prescription drug subsidy” but has not applied for it.

Comment by oowawa | 2009-08-27 13:20:33

the new Health Choices Commissioner

Question: How come he is a “Commissioner” and not a “Czar”? Does a Commissioner outrank a Czar? Perhaps we could settle the confusion by calling him a “Commissar.” It’s hard to keep the command structure in Obamanation straight.

Feds go hog wild promoting swine-flu shots
CDC spends $16 million on ‘outreach’ to convince Americans to get vaccine

With plush swine-flu toys stocked on its gift-shop shelves, citizens earning $50 to attend forums on the virus and an additional $50 for those willing to take a vaccine, it’s a $16 million swine-flu shot bonanza hosted by the federal Center for Disease Control.
As part of a massive public relations and research campaign, the CDC has been hosting as many as 10 swine flu forums in nine U.S. cities before Labor Day – and it is shelling out as much as $50,000 for a program that pays citizens $50 when they preregister and attend.

Sad that this is turning into more of a PR campaign. But this is where we are at right now. Everything is being sold to us through the media. The media has become glorified string puppets. In 1976 the vaccine caused more deaths than the flu… what makes us think that rushing this vaccine along with untested adjuvants will fare any better. If we are counting on luck, we aren’t particularly lucky as of late.

Comment by Patience | 2009-08-27 16:15:45

I heard on CNN today that TWO different flu shots are now being recommended for certain at-risk groups.

A couple of local college students where I live have been infected with the virus but survived with no problems beyond what a normal case of flu presents.

I don’t generally subscribe to conspiracy theories but I wonder if flu shots are being hyped so much as part of the deal the POTUS made with the pharmaceutical lobby. I’m probably wrong but…

Comment by Terry | 2009-08-27 17:18:39

Patience,
I know we are still supposed to get the regular seasonal flu vaccine AND the H1N1 vaccine. I believe I heard that children will have to get two shots of the H1N1–the virus and a booster–within 2 weeks of each other. Are you talking about more shots on top of this?

And unfortunately the more we learn about this government, the less unlikely your “conspiracy theory” sounds!

Comment by Doc99 | 2009-08-27 19:32:27

Note that most of the initial batches of H1N1 vaccine will be in multi-dose vials containing thimerosal preservative. Oh, and pregnant moms have been made priority, so that these women will be offered this initial vaccine. That should get Oprah, Jenny McCarthy and Don Imus’ attention.

One more thing, during the Ford administration, a massive Swine Flu vaccination campaign was launched, only to be called off when more died from complications of the vaccine than from Swine Flu.

It made me sick as a dog. I was in one of those groups chosen to take the shots while a Ft. Sam Houston–and they marched us to and from the dispensary in the pouring rain. Go figure.

NBC news downplayed the H1N1 virus a bit tonight. It seems the virus isn’t changing, which is a good thing. Also, if I heard correctly, it was said this virus seems to be spreading more through touch than through the air.

Terry, I’m sorry if I alarmed you. Evidently the story about TWO flu shots is no biggie — one for swine flu and another for the usual yearly innoculation.

BTW I had my one and only flu shot a few years ago and was never sicker than I was the following winter.

I think this might be because they are in a testing program. People usually get paid to be part of medical testing. I don’t think you could pay me enough money, though, to stick something in my arm that this government is overseeing. It probably contains some chip to record what I and my neighbors are saying abut healthcare.

I am confused because I have heard this vaccine in still in the testing phase, yet my daughter says they are giving it out at her college.

Comment by Hattip | 2009-08-27 13:53:39

The solution is to get government out of it, stop catering to Democrat special interest groups, stop robbing the middle classes and stop the vain glorious fantasy the “we can shape a health care industry”. Consumers acting in free markets shape an industry. That is how a free society works. That is how ours should work.

Social Security will be bankrupt soon. Most of those reading this blog who are under 40 will most likely never see a SS check, though they will pat plenty of payroll taxes.
What do we do when it is totally insolvent? Will we tax another 30% of GDP. Do not think that you can “Tax the Rich” to make it up. Do younger Americans deserve to sacrifice their own opportunities for this?

The New Deal was a Ponzi scheme, the chickens are coming home to roost.

If you are concerned about death panels ever developing, just wait until the generation after the Boomers come into full political power. They will start pulling the plugs on the aged boomers.

Lost in spam land…

Lets’ look at this at another perspective. Soc. Sec. was never meant to be a full-time retirement pension or to replace private retirement accounts. It was meant to provide a basic, bare bones amount to help people meet their basic needs. I don’t think the originators expected so many people to have no alternate pension or saving plans for retirement. Instead too many head into retirement thinking that Soc. Sec. will take care of all their needs. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Also, isn’t the Soc. Sec. fund the one that Congress and others keep raiding to line the coffers of other programs? I don’t think the fund was set up to be a reserve bank for the feds.

Medicare is not perfect, but it works for me and millions of others. BTW, it is NOT free, as we pay a specific amount each and every month. Supplemental insurance is NOT required and many people choose to do without it. A specific framework for the various plans has been laid out and, frankly, even to us pathetic brain dead old timers, it’s really not that difficult to choose. You get what you want to pay for.

What’s confusing to all, is the idiotic prescription plan, with the donut hole to add to the confusion. Apparently conceived by the lawyers of Big Pharma.

All these things are fixable, but with no one in Congress to carry the ball – or the MSM too busy discussing Michael Jackson’s “murder,” nothing will get done. Paying for them? Simple; remove our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and there’s more than enough money to go around.

The Medicare for All bill is the ONLY way to go as it’s already in place and has something like 50 years of success behind it. Why this new “reform” bill needs to be so complex, confusing, and costly is beyond me. But then, I think we all know why.

Since an earlier comment didn’t get posted, I’ll try again. Here’s a link to an insightful Investor’s Business Daily article about French healthcare:

http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=336178343967257

One bit of info in it I found very interesting is this:

Official World Health Organization statistics show the U.S. lagging behind France in infant mortality rates — 6.7 per 1,000 live births vs. 3.8 for France. Halderman notes that in the U.S., any infant born that shows any sign of life for any length of time is considered a live birth. In France — in fact, in most of the European Union — any baby born before 26 weeks’ gestation is not considered alive and therefore doesn’t “count” in reported infant mortality rates.

Comment by Obamastolemycounty | 2009-08-27 14:22:55

Born alive to me is alive. I don’t care what age. What do they do, throw those possibly alive babies on a shelf like the O did for failed abortions just to see if they are alive or dead?

I am boycotting Europe now. sick bastards!

Comment by Peggy Sue | 2009-08-27 14:42:46

That is interesting, Patience. I had read or heard that the way WHO came up with some of these stats did not pass the smell test. This is a case in point in how the numbers and %s get skewed.

Thanks for the link!

Did you see this? If one didn’t know before how they were we know now.

ABC, NBC Won’t Air Ad Critical of Obama’s Health Care Plan

The refusal by ABC and NBC to run a national ad critical of President Obama’s health care reform plan is raising questions from the group behind the spot — particularly in light of ABC’s health care special aired in prime time last June hosted at the White House

NBC claims it hasn’t rejected the ad, but will consider it with revisions since the ad contains factual errors. Huh? Does NBC ever complain about the “factual errors” that come out of Obama’s mouth? And ABC not airing it after it aired a private pro health care “infomercial” is just criminal. Does anyone know who we can write to about this?

Guess what? Beck hit over 3 million viewers.

Big Beck: Goes over 3 million viewers, beats O’Reilly in demo: Cable News Ratings for Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Fox News insists that the boycott has not affected its revenue, as advertisers have just moved their commercials to different time periods. And for his part, Beck appears invigorated by the challenge. “Even if the powers to be right now succeed in making me poor, drum me out … I will only be stronger for it,” he said on the air Wednesday. “And I will use American ingenuity and my ingenuity to pull myself up, and I will find another way to get this message out, on a platform that will be a thousand times more powerful. Because of my faith, I know how this story ends. The truth will set you free.”

remember when these same media outlets wouldn’t run ads critical of BushCo, and the leftists were up in arms about it? seems to me that the media is nothing but a bunch of whores who will do anything to protect their access and favorable legal treatment from the powers that be. they serve themselves and the authorities, not the people.

Whoa, there! I freely admit that Mike Rogers is a great speaker; persuasive and folksy, no doubt about it.
But he’s also the guy who has taken plenty of cash from drug companies and the health care industry. Other than grandstanding for his YouTube video, the only “contribution” Mr. Rogers has made to health care reform was a ridiculous amendment to the Energy and Commerce version of the bill. Rogers talks a good game, but he’s been on the public payroll his entire adult life and has zero idea of what it’s like to purchase insurance in the real world. He fought tooth and nail against expanding S-CHIP, which helps working families pay for coverage for their children.

Last but not least, this is the same yahoo who Jim Marcinkowski ran against in 2006 — and his “Trust-me-I’m-a-National-Security-Guy” foolishness and recent hysteria over Guantanamo detainees shows that he’s still more interested in getting media coverage than in working for his constituents.

I know nothing about Rep. Rogers, so thanks for providing a different POV. However, there is somewhat misleading info in that first link you provided, which states that 62% of bankruptcies are linked to medical bills. Someone could read this and falsely presume that 62% of bankruptcies are caused by medical bills when this isn’t the case. Credit card debt is still THE biggest reason people file for bankruptcy.

No doubt about it — medical bills account for some bankruptcies but the percentage of those caused primarily by medical bills is roughly a third of that stated (from what I’ve read), which is still bad.

Healthcare costs money. So it just isn’t a right.

What this Rep. Rogers is pointing out is anybody who says there won’t be any trade offs is lying.

That’s Obama’s whole M.O. – you can have everything you want, there will be no trade offs. Its like liberals think but he’s black! There’s no way he could be lying. He’s lying. Or he’s at least lying to himself.

We had really good health care choices with our former employer, and advocates if the insurances company was contrary.
With Medicare, I received an explanation of benefits for my first of the year doctor’s visit 3 days before my 6 month follow-up. Government efficency!
Wait until 50 million more patients sign up!

I want to know why ACORN is being funded with over $6,000,000,000. six billion dollars in the proposed bill. It looks like we are creating a larger entitlement group with allegiance to the “Messiah”.This is a corrupt organization being investigated and indicted in many states. There is something drastically wrong with the democrats who are blindly financially supporting this organization. I would like to see a post about this subject.
