Apparently, Sasha was trying to “sneak up” on her dad as he was working. Are you kidding me?
I can imagine the thinking that went into this picture.
1) It’s just so darn cute!!
2) Just like JFK and his son!!!!
3) We can release this when BO needs to look more warm and fuzzy.
I’m guessing Sasha is too big to fit under the desk (she’s older than John-John) or someone might have actually tried to stage the picture that way. Feh. BO’s staff has Kennedyized this guy from the start. Remember the earlier picture?

Now, for people steeped in politics and political history, this is no accident. These pictures are, at worst, staged to evoke JFK and, at best, not staged, but gleefully used to evoke JFK. Why? Actually, I don’t know. BO has been positioned as the new and better ever since he announced. So, why the need to Kennedyize him?
Maybe with Ted Kennedy now passed away, BO can completely appropriate the “Kennedy myth”? Whatever the truth, I just think this type of “see, he’s just like JFK”-hamfisted-political-trowel-wielding-public-image-shaping stuff is beyond fail.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Barack Obama revealed who he was/is as a man, a leader and what “his vision” and own individual image was rather than borrowing from the past? He’s not Lincoln, damn it! He’s not FDR nor JFK. And despite what Chris Matthews spews, he is not the last Kennedy brother. They’re all dead now. And there’s no number of “cute” photos and poses that will convince me otherwise.
He’s the blank slate and it’s up to him to fill the void, not steal from the past. Because you either stand for something, or you stand for nothing at all.
I’m weary of the guessing game, the vague speeches and comparisons to what’s come before. I’m tired of the press, both domestic and foreign, trying to impose the ghost of whoever on Barack Obama.
Will the real Barack Obama please stand up! Or get out of the way.
I suspect this not very subtle, image twisting will continue throughout the next 3+ years. Because 7 months in, he’s still a cipher.

The next thing you know, you’ll be suggesting that all of those pictures and drawings of Thee One clearly showing His inner radiance and halo are merely staged to identify Him with Jesus Christ! Joy, Jaquie wore a matilla every Sunday when she went to mass. Back in those days, Catholic women had to cover their heads when they entered a Catholic church. Men had to uncover their heads.

Well Teak, I’m so glad you brought this up. My theory is that Thee One was looking at the JFK painting while practicing the pose in the mirror, and simply got confused. Funny also how even the hairlines are virtually identical.
Obama likes to hide his left hand. I remember during the primaries, he deigned to shake hands with Hill, and he had his left hand in his pant’s pocket. From that I guessed he was not a gentleman, nor an honest one.

Frikken, good observation of the desks – one is heavily laden with responsibilities and the other is empty, bare and vacant. I’ve been around politics long enough to have voted in 12 presidential elections, and until 2008, always for the Democratic candidate. JFK as well as LBJ, and I’m willing to step out in faith for others I think worked overtime hours in that office: Nixon, Ford, Carter, H.W. Bush, and Bill, certainly Bill, always Bill. What some of these presidents labored over may not necessarily have been to our liking, but I believe they worked long, arduous hours nonetheless. My guess is that BHO has been at that historical desk in that historical room a couple of times: once on January 21st and again when this silly, inappropriate photo was staged. Are there any similarities to the black and white of JFK and JFK, Jr.? . … Um, let me think … oh yes … the room and the desk. John Kennedy, Jr. was a “cute as a button” TWO YEAR OLD toddler; Shasha Obama is an 8 year old rapidly approaching pre-adolescence and having been that age once, I know how quickly a little girl can grow from cute to gangly and not precious. W.H. photographers hear the clock tick, tick, ticking away on the cuteness potent and must try to make up for the time they lost forever when she was 4 or 5. To me what’s really disconcerting is that the pose is reminiscent of the woman in the field in Andrew Wyeth’s painting: Christina’s World.
And Wyeth was lionized by the Kennedys, invited to the White House, etc. But I don’t think the Christina pose was planned due to the negative connotations.

Well Pennsylvania Caucasian, sometimes I think I’m imagining things, but the fact that we both independently noticed the same similarity indicates that this really is a valid observation. I didn’t know about Wyeth’s association with the Kennedy’s.
I don’t think that the fact that the historical Christina was a lame older woman is really relevant, however. The painting has taken on a life of its own apart from the original model, and the world generally sees the painted figure as a young woman–an enigma. I don’t think that the historical facts behind the model would influence the photographer.

If the sneaking child looks authentic, it looks differently once you figure there was a cameraman walking behind the child… probably followed by the secret service people. So the picture implies dear leader can get lost in his work, with a child sneaking, a cameraman taking pictures and the secret service following along. Plausible? Just more kabuki theater for the sheeple.

IMO, politically speaking, the image-making attempt is for Obama to become as popular and highly regarded as JFK. The *function* however of Obama for the Democrats is meant as counter-Reagan. Since the Democratic Party is not naturally as authoritarian (& ruthless) as Republicans are (though can be equally doctrinaire), I don’t think they can bring it off. Plus, I don’t think Obama has genuine charisma (though I didn’t think Reagan did either….fwiw).

JFK’s father was a very successful Hollywood producer. A famous quote of his was, when JFK was a senatorial candidate, “We’re going to sell Jack like soap flakes”. Joe Kennedy was a master when it came to marketing his handsome family, and he seems most responsible for establishing the Kennedy aura.
In light of this, the picture of John under the desk was surely staged. It became an iconic image, which is a fact obviously not lost on this administration.
The difference today is news media is so utterly ubiquitous. This, combined with it’s general willingness and desire to help burnish a positive image of BHO (like they did with JFK — which is the main similarity between the two), is causing a problem of POTUS OVERDOSE. And we’re only 7 months into his term! Many of us are already approaching the need for detoxification.
John Kennedy was an exciting figure but hardly a great President. I think BO will end up in history books the same way. Still, BO is no JFK.

I feel sorry for both girls. The oldest one look angry, and is always wearing sunglasses. I think she is hitting adolescence w/ parents who have used her primarily as a prop, and she’s headed for psycological trouble. The second one is putting on a lot of weight since he became a public figure–getting worse in the White House.
I just think that they are a) unloved and b) exposed to publicity that even a grown up couldn’t handle. Whatever you can say about the Kennedys, I think Jackie loved her children.
I hope they largely disappear from public view, for their own sake. And I hope Michelle starts concentrating on them. (I think he’s far too narcistic to ever be a good father.) I know that Michelle moved her mother into the White House to raise them, but that doesn’t make up for neglectful parents.
I know girls who have been raised by selfish mothers who always put their careers first, and the girls suffer very very badly.

JFK is a strong capitalist advocate (whether liberals like that or not, it is a fact) who came from a family that benefitted from capitalism and thus championed free enterprise in America. JFK cut taxes and strengthened businesses. JFK, through Bobby K, fought the unions and specifically fought the mob influnence within the unions that threatened businesses and thus threatened the economy. BO on the other hand uses unions as his very own SS corps to intimidate those who oppose him.
JFK served in the miiltary honorably, BO consorted with terrorists and blamed the US for just about all problems in the world.
