Trig-Truther Sullivan Busted for Possession – Should have been for Stupidity
By LisaB on September 12, 2009 at 2:01 PM in Current Affairs
Trig-truther Andrew Sullivan just got busted for possession. In a national park. By a park ranger. That’s gotta be embarrassing.
Andrew Sullivan won’t face charges though. They were dropped by the office of the US Attorney. The judge at Sullivan’s hearing wasn’t too happy about that. The Docket, a lawyers’ blog in Massachusetts has the details.
U. S. Magistrate Judge Robert B. Collings says in his decision that the case is an example of how sometimes “small cases raise issues of fundamental importance in our system of justice.”
————But the U.S. Attorney’s Office sought to dismiss the case. Both the federal prosecutor and Sullivan’s attorney said it would have resulted in an “adverse effect” on an unspecified “immigration status” that Sullivan, a British citizen, is applying for.
At the hearing, Collings observed that Sullivan would still have to state on his application that he had been charged with a crime, and he asked both the prosecutor and Sullivan’s attorney, Robert Delahunt Jr. (cousin of U. S. Rep. William D. Delahunt), for more information about why paying the $125 would have “any additional adverse effect.”
When no attorney could fully answer the question beyond citing advice from immigration lawyers, Collings requested that Delahunt submit a brief on the issue. But before Delahunt could reply, Assistant U. S. Attorney James F. Lang jumped in and said that Collings had no power to inquire why the U.S. Attorney had decided to have the charge dismissed.
The judge did not think that was satisfactory, noting that there were other defendants in court that day for the same offense who wouldn’t enjoy the protection Mr. Sullivan got.
The Jawa Report calls out Sullivan for being too cheap to pay the fine, quoting Yoda:
If pay the fine you cannot, put away the herb you must.
Heh. Like that I do.
Ace of Spades, hands-down, had the best headline on the story:
Wee Weed Up: Andrew “Cheech” Sullivan Busted for Public Pot Possession; Judge Decries Favoritism as Obama’s US Attorney Steps in and Dismisses Charge
Probably the most entertaining blog about Sulllivan’s pot bust was theOtherMcCain, who writes from experience about being caught with the evil weed.
As a former teenage hoodlum who used to deal dope in felony weights, allow me to offer my Darwinian/draconian case for strict enforcement: Anybody stupid enough to get busted for dope is a danger to himself and others and should be locked up for the good of society. Dude, if you can’t outsmart a narc . . .
Also, you put all the stupid stoners in prison, think of the positive impact on American culture. To begin with, nobody would ever again listen to The Grateful Dead . . .
————Sully is no better than those moronic losers you see on the TV show COPS, pulled over for a broken turn signal and busted for a roach in the ashtray, a dime-bag in their pocket, or a crack-pipe the glove compartment. A smart doper doesn’t do stuff like that, and however Sully got caught, he is a “victim” of nothing but his own stupidity — just another dumb hoodlum who ought to be in jail.
Never give a hoodlum an even break, or he will become arrogant and thus more dangerous, both to himself and to society.
Wonkette, predictably, feels Sullivan’s pain and says this is all about nothing other than a poor guy with HIV trying to stay in the US.
OutsidetheBeltway finds this to be more of a tempest in a teapot situation but manages to get this in:
Jonathan Last has somehow obtained a memorandum [PDF], dated yesterday, written by U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert B. Collings in the matter of Andrew Sullivan, who was caught in a federal park with small amounts of a controlled substance but whom the U.S. Attorney declined to prosecute in the “interests of justice.” To wit: Paying the $125 fine would make it harder to conceal from immigration officials that he had been charged with said crime.
Ouch!
I won’t argue whether or not this crime rises to the level of deportation, discussions of equal protection or even the correctness or lack of in our drug laws. Surely Sullivan, with his national following, could have ponied up $125 fine, but whatever.
No. The reason this story about Sullivan merits even the littlest mention is all his hard work becoming the country’s pre-eminent Trig-Truther in a style which can only be described as gynecological bordering on thoroughly nasty. While demanding consideration for his lifestyle and weed choices, Sullivan, saw fit to spend the bulk of 2008 questioning whether or not Sarah Palin could PROVE, I TELL YOU, PROVE she is Trig Palin’s mother. Sullivan demanded medical proof.
Do a search of “trig” on Andrew Sullivan’s blog at The Atlantic. You’ll get “about 421 results.” (Second time I searched, I got 536, but we’ll go with the lower number.) Given Sullivan’s obsession about Trig Palin and his birth, it’s hard to believe 421 doesn’t actually represent 421 separate articles, although I’m sure there’s a few duplicates in the list. Reading the overwrought supercilious tripe is painful in the extreme. How many articles has this loser devoted to an infant, not his own? Hard to tell without reading each one and I definitely don’t have the stomach for that. But here’s a sample of a few brief “bullets” or teasers about articles available if you search on “trig” at Andrew’s blog.
From 9/2008
Now all we need is confirmation from the obstetrician who delivered Sarah’s baby
Here’s a longer sample of Andrew’s Atlantic-worthy writing – from 10/2008:
Now, when are we going to get some record of Trig’s birth and parentage from the hospital or the doctor? It’s been over a month now and still nada. Some basic record confirming Palin’s eight-month special needs pregnancy, amiocentesis, labor and birth would be immensely easy to find and release – even off the record – to news organizations. And yet the McCainiacs refuse to even go near it and demonize anyone who dares ask for something that must be extremely well documented and easily found. They have stated on the record that Sarah Palin is Trig’s biological mother. But they refuse to provide one iota of confirming evidence.
I mean: what’s the problem here? Why is this so hard?
And no, I haven’t let the basic issue of accountability and transparency go. Never. It’s my job.
From 10/2008
… must be plenty of medical records and obstetricians and medical eye-witnesses prepared to testify to Sarah Palin’s giving birth to Trig. . .
NQ covered the Trig-Truther many times and I wrote about Sullivan’s prejudice against people whose lifestyle he does not agree with. (Irony much?)
From 12/2008
This deluded and delusional woman still doesn’t understand what happened to her; still has no self-awareness; and has never been forced to accept her obvious limitations. She cannot keep even the most trivial story straight; she repeats untruths with a ferocity and calm that is reserved only to the clinically unhinged; she has the educational level of a high school drop-out; and regards ignorance as some kind of achievement. It is excruciating to watch her – but more excruciating to watch those who feel obliged to defend her.
————-
My point is not to persecute or hound some random person. I wish I had never heard of Sarah Palin. I wish this nightmare had never happened. I wish totally innocent by-standers, like Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston and Heather Bruce and Trig Palin, had not had their lives disrupted by this circus. It’s distressing to everyone, which is why most journalists left many aspects of this charade alone. But Palin is claiming vindication, is on every cable show, is at the National Governors Association Conference, and is touted as a future leader of the GOP. There comes a point at which you have to simply call a time out and insist that this farce cease and some basic accountability and transparency be restored to the process. Since no one else seems willing to do so, the Dish will stay on the case. So where are those medical records anyway?———–
So we come to June, 2009. Election is over now by what? Nearly 7 months. But Sullivan is still enraptured by the womb. . .
As the months have gone by since John McCain revealed his total cynicism and contempt for America’s national security by selecting one Sarah Palin to be a potential vice-president of the United States, we have learned that every single ghastly attribute we discovered in the campaign is worse than we thought at the time. The narcissism, the pathological and incessant lying, the viciousness, the delusions of grandeur, the vindictiveness, the fathomless and proud ignorance, the opportunism, the vanity, the white trash concupiscence and fraudulence in almost every respect: these are now indisputable. How an advanced democracy came that close to having this farce of a candidate running the most powerful country on earth reveals how deep the corruption of our politics and especially our media are.
——-
White trash concupiscence. You know, I think THAT may be the key here. Andrew is nothing if not bothered by Palin women and their children. Maybe he only likes women safely past menopause. Either way, “white trash concupiscence” is quite telling. But not about Sarah Palin.
Yeah. Andrew Sullivan got busted for possession in Massachusetts. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Sullivan cast the birth of a little boy as purely political drama but probably wants discretion for his own drug bust. He could go the other way and claim his pot bust was ALL political and cast himself as the great crusader against drug laws. Either way, Sullivan gets to be a participant in the telling of his own story. Not so much for “white trash” Trig, whose birth Sullivan continues to question and who was called no more than a prop to his mother’s political ambitions by the great Trig-truther.
Maybe one day Trig Palin will find some humor there.

Great stuff, LisaB.
Take a few words out here and there and who do we get?
As the months have gone by since… revealed their total cynicism and contempt for America’s national security by selecting… to be a potential president of the United States, we have learned that every single ghastly attribute we discovered in the campaign is worse than we thought at the time. The narcissism, the pathological and incessant lying, the viciousness, the delusions of grandeur, the vindictiveness, the fathomless and proud ignorance, the opportunism, the vanity, the entitled concupiscence and fraudulence in almost every respect: these are now indisputable. How an advanced democracy… running the most powerful country on earth reveals how deep the corruption of our politics and especially our media are.
Well done, Ferd!
without a doubt, the leftist feeding frenzy over sarah palin was an attempt to divert public attention from their own foolish choice of a woefully inadequate candidate for POTUS. now all of america is paying for their choice.
It sure was and we certainly are. As requiredreading said on another thread, we’ve been acorn’d.
I agree totally with this… I think we should apply the same demands and logic to Obama’s birth certificate…
I was just thinking along those lines, that Sullivan is making some kind of unconscious connection between unusual births. He objects to Trig for whatever reason, that’s unimportant, and starts to make the same arguments about his birth that some make about 0. He probably hates those people too, and the two are conflated but he can’t see the irony. I think he should probably go home, where he can have universal health care for his condition(s), poor fellow. /s
Nice. The phrase ‘hoisted by one’s own pitard’ comes to mind. I’m certainly glad Judge Collings understands that the judiciary is a separate branch of government. I hope he protests this favorable treatment publicly.
“Wonkette, predictably, feels Sullivan’s pain and says this is all about nothing other than a poor guy with HIV trying to stay in the US.”
Wouldn’t he be better served in the UK, utilizing their top rated universal health care, to allow him to better maintain and afford his HIV treatment?
Personally, I hope he gets deported. hahaha
I’m with you, Sara! The sooner we no longer have to be subjected to his vile invectives against innocents like Trig the better…
Uh, you don’t think they’ll still let him rail on from in the UK, do you???
Thanks, LisaB!
It’s an interesting phrase–never heard that before.
I could be used to describe Chaucer’s Wife of Bath, a great character, smart lady (though it’s my opinion that Chaucer really liked this character. The Wife of Bath, if she were real, would have lived in a time that was really prejudiced against women–St. Jerome’s Adversus Jovinianum was widely read at the time. Perhaps Sullivan believes himself a modern St. Jerome.
This incident should cause him to do some in-depth soul searching. But then, I really doubt it will.
Lisa, thanks for brightening my day.
he definitely has contempt for women. since he’s gay, he feels that his “manhood” is suspect, so he constantly tries to prove it by bashing anything female.
Oops, though you were thinking of Obama
“since he’s gay, he feels that his “manhood” is suspect, so he constantly tries to prove it by bashing anything female.”
I have to protest. Most out gay men I know can’t be manipulated by challenges to their ‘manhood.’ Sullivan is simply a freak.
And isn’t it ridiculous to suggest that misogyny is the province of gay men? Women have been oppressed for centuries by straight males, not the tiny gay minority.
where did i say say that misogyny was limited to gay men? of course not. geez. and yes, most gay men do not overcompensate to the fact that society questions their manhood, but some do. sullivan seems like a gay bill maher to me; obviously they both have some issues with women, and btw, i’m gay.
If Sullivan is over-compensating for anything, I’m inclined to think it’s for his one-time very hawkish stance on the Iraq war.
The sheer hypocrisy and cynicism of Sullivan is amply demonstrated by the few quotes given above. That he can publish this dreck such impunity is appalling.
correction: “… with such impunity….”
Ferd, this is my fave:
“And no, I haven’t let the basic issue of accountability and transparency go. Never. It’s my job.”
uhh andrew, karma is knocking on your door. you can see her through the window the lady with the truck of chickens coming home to roost.
The trial might have an “adverse effect” on Sullivan’s immigration status? Aren’t the immigration laws written to keep out undesirable people (for example, drug users (like Sullivan))?
Well, jwrjr, he’s a throwback to a Cheech and Chong movie to us but a cynical mouthpiece for Obamabots everywhere. They win, for now.
No doubt Sullivan will stick a coke spoon into his eye, rendering it unable to close. Then he will apply for Disability.
Forget the disability–give him a can of spinach and a Pop-Eye the Sailor outfit. Then deport his backside.
deport him..lol
Shit, let’s be real. Obama’s aunt has been living in government (tax payer funded) Section 8 housing in violation of the law for years since you have to be an American citizen or legal resident to get rental benefits. She’s been to court, what? Like 3 times and still continues to get extensions and live off the taxpayer dime without being deported. And it’s expected she will get citizenship. So if Auntie can basically steal tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money and pay no penalty, Sullivan getting caught with a little weed shouldn’t hurt his citizenship chances.
Frankly, I think both Sullivan and Auntie should be deported.
And while we’re at it, get rid of that US attorney who was more concerned with protecting Sullivan than upholding the law.
Sounds like “equality” and “justice” are just out of date words.
Two things: I wonder if any deals were made with the US Attorney’s office and Sullivan. Would the outcome have been the same, if Sullivan had been a critic of Obama, rather than a favorable mouthpiece for this administration? I’d say, no great loss, if he was deported.
Great Britain would be very disapointed if Sullivan was deported – then they would have to put up with him.
“Would the outcome have been the same, if Sullivan had been a critic of Obama, rather than a favorable mouthpiece …”
Let’s put it this way. Lang will appear before Judge Collings in other cases. If I were a U.S. attorney, I wouldn’t smack down a judge on my own initiative.
You do the math.
Brought to you by the same administration that dropped the charges against the Black Panthers in Philly for voter intimidation. And the same administration that fired Inspector General Gerald Walpin for uncovering misuse of funds by Obama’s cronies. Must be my tin hat.
the whole government is rotten to the core.
And now that I’ve watched the Glen Beck clip above, I’ll have to add that this administration also told the chairperson of the House Judiciary Committee NOT to investigate ACORN. How long are we going to put up with this??
Andrew “Cheech” Sullivan Busted for Public Pot Possession.
Dude, where’s my Dell? So what I want to know will he still have a job? Interesting that he was dumb enough to get popped in a Federal jurisdiction.
I can’t tell you how many times, while in our Yosemite, I have smelt the skunk in the camp site.
I believe this US Attorney needs to explain their thinking on this one. Speaking of which, is the politicization of the US Attorneys still in syndication? Or is this just another rerun? Seriously, did the freak have a scrip for it?
What change of personal has happened in the US Attorneys Office or is Andy on the hook for something and they need ‘em for Intel?
It does bring up Th Amendment “equal protection ” issues for any subsequent charge/arrest/prosecution on federal property.
If someone with the clout of US attorney can decide who and what is worth prosecuting, then God help those of us who oppose That One if we do anything that even hints of misbehavior. My tin foil hat is buzzing with the thought that maybe the laws will be bent to allow more latitude in prosecuting certain dissenters.
I can foresee Glen Beck getting the death penalty for jaywalking.
Yep-there goes the Equal Protection clause. Yeah That One is a Constitutional Scholar all right-on how to get around its sundry requirements.
Ops, mentioned this above before reading all the comments–My bad! Have a good one.
I don’t know, but I have the feeling a few hundred Mexican immigrants without aids who can actually do something useful would be a better use of health care resources than one birth truther with aids. Probably cost about the same in health care resources by the time it is all finished. I wonder how Obama’s health actuaries would calculate it?
There is a huge issue here: are some people above the law?
Is Sullivan above the law because he is a HUGE supporter of The Exalted One Of The Holy Teleprompter?
Is Charles Rangel above the law?
Is Rahm Emanual above the law?
Is ACORN above the law?
Is Pelosi’s family above the law?
Is Barney Frank above the law?
Is Van Jones above the law?
Clearly we have two justice systems here: one for friends of the administration, and one for everyone else.
My question is, when are people going to start becoming aware of that in large numbers?
Thank you for the awesome article, and thank you Mr. Johnson for your very eclectic site, which sometimes confounds me, but mostly contains interesting reads.
Best regards to all who write entries and comments.
Excellent piece. I think I shall now hound Mr. Sullivan with his own crime from her on out.
