The Right Woman to Take Teddy Kennedy’s Senate Seat
By Ani on September 20, 2009 at 5:01 PM in Barack Obama, Current Affairs, Hillary Clinton, Martha Coakley
In Hillary Clinton’s historic run for the Presidency, Massachusetts was the most telling primary. The three most powerful men in the state, Senators Kennedy, Kerry and Governor Duval Patrick endorsed Barack Obama yet Hillary still won the state by over 15 pts. The old boys club failed to fool the voters. They saw the best candidate and voted for her.
Once again, we have a woman vs. the old boys club in the run for the late Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. So let me share a spot of good news with all of you. According to the Boston Globe:
Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has a higher favorability rating than any other candidate in the rapidly-coalescing field for the US Senate seat left vacant by the death of the late Edward M. Kennedy, a new poll released tonight shows.
Attorney General Coakley’s credentials are impeccable. Moreover, she had the good sense to be a fierce Hillary supporter last year, refusing to give up her vote at the Convention even after Hillary released her delegates. Ms. Coakley still voted for the stronger candidate.
Martha Coakley has sued for equal marriage rights, filing a constitutional challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act, protesting the fact that 16,000 married same-sex couples are being unfairly denied benefits. [Although the Obama Administration Asked Court To Dismiss Another Challenge To Anti-Gay Marriage Law ]. She defended children against clergy sexual abuse, has won settlements that protect consumers and fought those who are unfair to workers, indicting contractors in connection with prevailing wage law violations. Sounds like just the kind of voice we need in the Senate right now.
Given Massachusetts progressive bent, it is surprising how difficult it is for qualified women to rise to positions of power in that state. The Hill’s article, Coakley’s Tough Battle in Massachusetts Special Election, states
Martha Coakley has the statewide profile, the political know-how, and the early edge needed to win a special election for Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. But is she the right gender?
By most accounts, the Massachusetts attorney general should be and is the frontrunner in the special election, at least for now, and as the lone female candidate in a field of male congressmen, she should have a built-in advantage with half the electorate.
But this is Massachusetts, and the bluest state in the union has a not-so-Democratic reputation for turning away female candidates.
Women have been elected to just four statewide offices, none of which have been governor or Senate. Rep. Niki Tsongas (D-Mass.) in 2007 became just the fourth woman elected to Congress in state history, and the first in a quarter-century.
It’s time to break that trend. January’s upcoming special election would be a good place to start.
Of note, Politico’s recent article Women Lawmakers Outperform Men:
Are women more effective lawmakers than men?
That’s the preliminary conclusion of a study conducted by researchers at Stanford University and the University of Chicago, who say that on average, women in Congress introduce more bills, attract more co-sponsors and bring home more money for their districts than their male counterparts do.
Could that be because we are better at multitasking and are smarter shoppers? Hee hee. And the following information is just shocking – not:
The researchers also found that women introduced more legislation than men who served in their same districts, often hitting the ground running in their first terms.
“We find that, on average, women sponsor about three bills more per Congress per term than their male counterparts,” said Anzia. “They co-sponsor more bills than other members, and they also obtain more co-sponsors for their own bills.”
Since 1789, women have constituted just 2 percent of the total congressional population. The ratio of female to male representatives has increased in recent years, but the pace is still fairly glacial: Nearly 17 percent of House members are women today, compared with about 3 percent in 1979.
…Women who run and win are likely the most politically ambitious and talented of their pool, having potentially overcome hurdles including voter bias and self-doubt about their ability to win. … Large majorities of both men and women in candidate feeder pools, such as law offices and political organizations, believe there is a bias against women in elections, according to Lawless and Fox studies in 2005 and 2004.
Once women get to Capitol Hill, those hurdles may drive them to perform better, on average, than male counterparts who have faced a less contentious road.
We know something about that, don’t we?
While I was encouraged by the polling data in the Boston Globe, it is clear Ms. Coakley faces a tough battle and needs funding and boots on the ground to turn out the vote. As The Hill noted:
One Democratic consultant not aligned with any of the special election candidates said the glass ceiling is even tougher now because of the nature of low-turnout special elections and the timing of it, with a cold December primary and a colder January general election.
“She has to figure out not just how to get women votes but how to get senior women to vote for her and break a pattern where older women in Massachusetts don’t like women candidates,” the consultant said.
Coakley, who in 2006 was elected the state’s first female attorney general, is proudly running with the women’s mantle and has garnered the support of EMILY’s List and other women’s groups.
Emily’s List noted in an email the other day:
“In the 24 years since we founded EMILY’s List, I can’t think of a single race where the need was so urgent and the opportunity so great. We have a chance to make history once more, but we can’t afford to wait.”
Martha has everything going for her-intelligence, experience, competence and compassion-except the money- Shame of having a local campaign chest that can’t be used for a national position unlike the other candidates who are starting with well over 1 million dollars each.
Please do anything you can to help- $25-$4,800 ($2,400 for primary; $2,400 for general) Your money-no matter how small will matter-let’s level the playing!

I am proud to support Martha Coakley and hope that, once again, Massachusetts voters can look at the field and choose the best candidate.

Dang–wish I lived in Mass. so I could work for her! Well, can email friends.
Thanks for such a good post on a good woman!
It’s great that Emily’s List is supporting Ms. Coakley.
However to say that in 24 years they can’t think of a single race where the need is so urgent strikes me as odd. What about Hillary’s run for the Presidency? If they are so much for women candidates why did they support Obama over Hillary?
I guess they’re for women candidates. At least as long as one of them isn’t Hillary Clinton.
I was going to ask if this is the same Emily’s List that didn’t support Hillary, and that I no longer donate money to?
I hope if anyone feels inclined to donate to Ms. Coakley, they will do so directly at her address or ActBlue site. I don’t do anything with Emily’s List either, but felt I should include their endorsement.
Thanks very much for your comment.
I thought Emily’s List did endorse Hillary. No? If they didn’t, that is the last straw! I know, of course, that NARAL and N.O.W. endorsed B0 as their women’s candidate. I don’t know how they could look each other in the eye. They cannot be seeing the big picture. They absolutely do not understand that in 2009, not only do we not have basic women’s rights, we don’t even have a plan to get there.
Until women understand that when abortion was legalized, we did not get equal pay for equal work, did not get an end to misogyny or lack of respect as enjoyed by male people, did not get the removal of the glass ceilings for more women executives, did not have an appreciable increase of women in corporate America’s board rooms, did not get that many more female elected officials, and the most egregious of all were unable to elect the first woman for POTUS. In fact, the legalization of abortion divided women in half!
Until women understand women’s rights are not synonymous with abortion rights, we will stay stuck in time.
I’m happy to tell you, Emily’s List did, in fact, endorse Hillary. I googled Emily’s List 2008 endorsements. EL is an abortion rights org that endorses “visible” female candidates.
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/05/14/1021088.aspx
I was fairly certain this was the case.
I’m sorry this reference to Emily’s List support of Hillary came from “FirstRead” – the MSNBC0BAMA cable outlet’s daily propaganda piece.
The article and comments are a sampling of the outrage we all felt about this daily dispicable blog, as well as its author, Chuck Todd, one of 0’s most ardent supporters. Chuck’s reward for all he did for 0 got him a front-row seat in the daily WH briefing.
Emily’s List is NOT an abortion rights organisation. EL exists to help women candidates get elected.
I should have posted this link instead of the FirstRead one that refers to this article.
http://www.observer.com/2008/emilys-list-trashes-naral-obama-endorsement
As sandi78 points out, “Emilys List is not an abortion rights organization. EL exists to help women candidates get elected.” Their mission statement reads: “Emilys List is dedicated to building a progressive America by electing pro-choice democratic women to office.”
Emily is an acronym for “Early Money is Like Yeast” (it helps the dough rise.)
Emily’s list definitely supported Hillary- I spent a bit of time with them on the campaign trail- I had a hard time as well with how quickly the women’s groups jumped onto the Obama express but they were very helpful and enthusiastic about Hillary-
Emily’s List was soliciting donations for women candidates who supported Barry over Hillary during the primaries. I’ve stopped donating to them too. So, how nice we have the information on where to send our money directly to the Caokley campaign.
Great post, Ani – thank you for this.
AG Coakley certainly does sound like the most qualified candidate in MA. I’m hoping that since the good people of the Commonwelath of MA had the sense to vote for Clinton over Obama, that they will do the same with Coakley, who has certainly shown her mettle.
Very interesting study – I am not one bit surprised by the RESULTS of the study. Cool that they did it, though!
Thank you for highlighting AG Coakley!
Name one thing she’s done that made ANY difference and I’ll donate to her campaign, name two and I’ll vote for her. FYI: My money is safe because other than being a woman she’s done nothing except collect a paycheck and run around telling everyone that when Teddy dies she’s going to be first in line for his seat. Well, Teddy died and less than 24 hours later Coakley makes her announcement..
You could actually read the article before asking a question that was answered therein.
Excellent post Ani.
I have only seen AG Coakley one time. I wish her luck, though I am doubtful about her chances.
Emily’s List does not make history…they make tracks when the males start dominating the scene!
Now these clowns want another Kennedy in MA Senate seat after whining at the primaries that we can’t have dynasties in America. Not sure what they think the Kennedy clan is.
I am vehemently opposed to Martha Coakley becoming the U.S. Senator from MA. I will eventually write an article detailing my experience with her and her office, when she was the DA of Middlesex County. Suffice to say, if doing favors for prominent political operatives rather than ministering to the most vulnerable in our population is anathema to you, you might want to withhold your support for Ms. Coakley until you read my post.
So who are you pushing?
Not her. Definitely, not her.
Ani — I agree! Martha Coakley would be a great choice. I wish I could vote for her.
Thank you Ani for this post- We in Massachusetts need all the help we can get from the Hillary community- I’ve known Martha for many years- have followed her career- Of course there will be disgruntled folks- like one of the posters above- she’s been prosecuting people not doling out favors. Martha, as a cum laude graduate of Williams and honors from BU Law School – got her first two jobs at prestigious firms- She left the $$$ and became an assistant DA working on child abuse until the Justice Department asked her to head up their Boston Organized Crime Task Force for a year- If you check her Wiki or any independent assessment-this is a woman who has done the hard work-sued big pharm etc. She is presently the first woman in MA to become Attorney General.
So much more to her as a person- she married later in life (she was busy) a 37 year Cambridge police veteran-great guy- They have two wonderful labs -Martha Coakley isn’t only scary smart, hard working and courageous -she’s got her best friends from kindergarten and throughout her life working on the campaign-That tells you something about a person- (Reminds me of the friends of Hillary’s that I met all over the country while campaigning for her) If it’s at all possible to donate- even if it’s a small amount- please do- The guys who have come into the race have big bucks- two of them – really, really big- Money is the only thing that Martha is missing- and Hillary’s army can help- $10 and $25 at a time-
http://www.actblue.com/page/mc2010
Also helpful would be to go to the independent site, http://www.womenforcoakley.com/ we put up to help organize our community and please make comments- WFC knows that lots of people are accessing but few are commenting- One of the most well known opinion writers in the Globe linked to us in her column last week- and we read our research in other newspaper reporting- but we need to look active- Also- anyone who can spread the word throughout the Hillary community- If you have contacts at other blogs- send them to us and encourage them to write- Ani might even share this piece with them.
Of course you can also go to the official website for information, to sign up to volunteer- etc.
Thanks for anything you can do- we will not be denied again- It’s Ted Kennedy’s seat – how sweet would that be!
It’s all hands on deck to level the playing field!!!

Go Martha!
But shortly after she was elected DA, her office received a complaint that the man she described to the press just months earlier as her “mentor,” former ADA and newly appointed Commissioner of DSS (now the Department of Children and Families) Jeffrey Locke, had illegally put a newborn infant in a foster home instead of with his brother; and the foster family immediately began abusing and neglecting him, and the agency was keeping in that foster home to cover this up. Ms. Coakley did not review the child’s birth records, which showed he was once as healthy as a horse; or call his pediatrician, who hadn’t seen his patient since he was 3 months old, at which time he ordered tests for failure to thrive and the foster family stopped taking him to the pediatrician; or even examine the then 7-month-old, who now weighed just 9 (nine) pounds. No; according to a former staffer in the child abuse unit, they called DSS to ask, are you abusing and neglecting a child and covering this up?
I’m not pushing anyone here but I am always suspicious of the type of post you just made.
You are painting her a some who was complicit in child abuse. That’s a pretty strong allegation.
I am not painting anyone. AFTER her office dismissed the complaint, the agency took the child to the hospital, where he began receiving treatment for failure to thrive. He gained weight “hand over fist,” as long as his feeding/eating was being witnessed. But DSS kept him in the same foster home. The spouse of a law professor from my alma mater worked in the DA’s office. He explained he could investigate further because the case was too political. He urged me to pursue whatever civil avenues were available.
More than a year later, an angel smuggled his birth records out of the hospital (not the one that later treated him for malnutrition). That’s how I can prove my statement, when he was born, he was as healthy as a horse. Yet, I obtained court records stating, he was as sick as a dog; until the foster family got him and nursed him back to health.
If you followed my posts over time, you would know, I am not prone to hyperbolic rants, or exaggeration.
That sounds like an incredibly sad case but unfortunately it happens every day-even with the best intentions- if you know anyone who has been a DA or works in the DA ’s office you will know how pathetically common and numerous these cases are and there are thousands of them. The stories you read about or see on tv don’t even touch the surface -my friends have told me things that I can’t even believe regarding abuse to children- I think that there must be more to this story-You did say “her office received a complaint” the Martha I know would never have let that happen if she could help it. She has worked with several of my friends and they rave about her commitment and passion. Coakley was Chief of the Child Abuse Prosecution Unit for several years- This is not a heartless woman- nor one who ignores and neglects. In a 23 year stretch there would no doubt be some cases that slipped through- You do know that these offices are overwhelmed with cases- I understand you are connected to this story but I also know so much about the essence of Martha Coakley-through stories of my friends, her friends, her lifetime of associates. I don’t say these things lightly- there is absolutely nothing worse then child abuse-
The highest incidence of child abuse in this country occurs when children are in state custody. CHILDREN 4x MORE LIKELY TO DIE IN STATE FOSTER CARE; THE CRISIS OF FOSTER CARE I accused the head of the agency of taking part in covering up the fact that they had illegally placed a child in the wrong home – illegal, as in, contrary to the laws governing placement of children – and, to cover this up, decided to keep him in the wrong home until they terminated his birth mother’s rights and the court dropped out of the picture. Then, they planned to move him into the home he had a right to be in since the state removed the newborn from the custody of his mother. But in the meantime, I uncovered, the foster parents were abusing and neglecting him. Now, to cover up the cover-up, they decided never to move him out of that horrible home.
The head of this agency, a lawyer, is now a judge. He was questioned about this case at his highly publicized contentious confirmation hearing; he lied to the Governor’s Council to conceal his culpability. So, yes, Ms. Coakley knew all about this case; nothing fell through the cracks here. But when it came to determining whether to return this one tiny black baby to his rightful home, with his brother, who had told the agency he wanted him, even before he was born, and risk certain exposure and punishment for their malfeasance; or keep him away from his biological family and try to nurse him back to good health, thereby hiding their criminal conduct, all of those white officials involved chose to protect themselves by stealing this poor powerless blessed child from HIS family.
Didn’t she prosecute the British Au Pair and got a conviction? That was pretty impressive to me. However the judge in the case chose to give a very light sentence, when it was so obvious that the Brit was negligent. The mass media blamed the parents for leaving their child to this Au Pair. Nevertheless, Coakley was outstanding prosecutor. I love her work and I still do…
veritas, I just re-read your comments. “Disgrunted”? I am livid at the prospect that, having abused the power of her office as the DA, Ms. Coakley is now within reach of the U.S. Senate.
Ms. Coakley, less than a year on the job as DA, had a choice to make: investigate charges lodged by an attorney against the Commissioner of DSS by examining this baby – he entered DSS custody at the same time she was elected – or give the agency the “heads up” the complaint had been lodged and cross her fingers, they would not let him die. She chose to cross her fingers.
It’s easy to prosecute an au pair, from another country, in whose care the child of a physician died; but to go after a prominent politician from a family of prominent politicians, white; just to save the life of a black baby from a mother who could not take care of herself, let alone him, takes a whole different kind of courage and fealty to elected position.
If Ms. Coakley is willing to make such trade-offs as DA, what on earth is she willing to sacrifice given the power of office inherent in being a U.S. Senator?
She should have considered the consequences to her aspirations for higher office, before she wrote off this one child for political expedience.
They should have an election and leave it vacant until the electoral process is over.
She is running for the seat, and is not interested in being appointed as the interim stooge by our Governor.
Off topic but I just caught this story at The Hill. It’s frightening. Obama told reporters he’s open to newspaper bailouts.
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/59523-obama-open-to-newspaper-bailout-bill
You people are idots. Its the Democrats who got us into this big frigging mess and you still want to glorify HRC to sainthood. I don’t care how bad G. Bush was and all the mistakes he made, he never created the likes of ACORN, a black hole unstoppable in a Democratic congress. Will this woman stand up and cry out the horrors of this “Free Money” agency? Fuck no. She’ll dance around it, and what will she say now about the POS Obama for whom she stumped? You are either politically motivated or a sexist, the country be damned, if you support this person. Here’s hoping the ‘pubs open up the flood gates on this fraudulent idol to the sexists and the sham would-be politicos – sniper fire, indeed. I hope they make a Youtube video on her harrowing experience with sniper fire, and I hope its as funny as the Pelosi/CIA lying vid with that loony music. Can’t wait.
How can you ever forgive this woman for supporting
the ineligible Obama, and she knew he was ineligible during the primaries? Ani, you are no patriot.
Bush added over 5 trillion to the national debt.
He got us into one unnecessary war and let an arrogant imbecile of a Secretary of Defense mismanage it a tremendous human cost. He gutted Fema, he depleted our state side readiness by deploying our NG and their vital equipment to Iraq. He let big Oil and Wall St speculators drive oil prices artificially high and so that Big Oil reaped record profits while with $4 a gallon gas helped drive a stake through the heart of the middle class. He and Cheney were walking disasters.
The only reason to vote for a republic is to purge an democratic incumbent out of office. Then the next task is to vote them out of office.
I’m not here to sing the praises of George Bush or his cronies, just very much concerned that people like HRC gives further support to the horrors of Frank, Pelosi, and Reid. Do the math on them. Bush is gone. They’re in control now. You may not like Republicans, but sooner or later we’ll all be wishing McCain had won. The big question is how and who can rein in the likes of ACORN programs and be ready to face the rioting when the spigot is turned off. God willing. God save this country from irresponsible “credit card” users, people without a pot to piss in, yet have no problem having cell phones, bling, and maxed out cable service. How much longer can we do this?? HRC is definitely not the answer.
