Will Obama Surrender Afghanistan to the Mullahs?

Yes. Short answer. The leak to the Washington Post of the assessment by General McChrystal, the officer in charge of the war in Afghanistan, is quintessential Washington power politics and a major “go screw yourself Barack” by the person or persons who passed the paper to Bob Woodward. You do not get leaks when there is a policy consensus on an issue. There are several reasons classified or sensitive information is leaked–a policy disagreement, a desire to embarrass a principle official or a whistleblower.
Here’s how Woodward started his story:
The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan warns in an urgent, confidential assessment of the war that he needs more forces within the next year and bluntly states that without them, the eight-year conflict “will likely result in failure,” according to a copy of the 66-page document obtained by The Washington Post.
Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal says emphatically: “Failure to gain the initiative and reverse insurgent momentum in the near-term (next 12 months) — while Afghan security capacity matures — risks an outcome where defeating the insurgency is no longer possible.”
His assessment was sent to Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates on Aug. 30 and is now being reviewed by President Obama and his national security team.
McChrystal concludes the document’s five-page Commander’s Summary on a note of muted optimism: “While the situation is serious, success is still achievable.”
Did you catch the key sentence?
The assessment was sent to Gates almost three weeks ago. On an issue of such importance the delay in making a decision can only mean one thing–Obama does not want to do what McChrystal says he needs in order to succeed–i.e., deploy more troops.
Friends on the inside tell me that there was major foot dragging going on at the National Security Council. Once again the names of the political straphangers are at the top of the list for stalling a decision. This leak had one clear purpose–force Obama’s hand. General McChrystal replaced another General who had publicly challenged the Obama Administration and insisted he needed more troops. Obama and company promptly replaced him. Now this. While McChrystal has shied away from the public limelight and pressed his request through the proper chain of command, the Woodward piece opens a major fissure between the Obama White House and the military.
The delay in responding to McChrystal stands in stark contrast to the promises old Barky made during the campaign. Compare his foot dragging with the following “stirring” promise to take firm action in Afghanistan:
I guess Bob Woodward won’t be writing his beatific version glorifying the leadership of Obama in the same way he did in his first book on the Bush Presidency. The challenge now for Obama is to get up off of his lazy ass and make a decision. The time for waffling is over.

Protecting us had nothing whatsoever to do with him being POTUS. He wanted to have the golden key to the US money to let his friends go in and clean us out. Beyond that, he had no plan.
He became President to turn this country into a socialist state. It was his dream and a dream shared by his many friends and associates.
He never had any interest in advancing democracy and freedom – something JFK had spoke about as did Reagan. His foreign policy is massive appeasement in order to avoid conflict.
Obama’s campaign promises about Afghanistan were as much a lie as was all his other lies.
The lesson of Vietnam was you fight to win and let the field generals conduct the war. We made the same mistake initially with Iraq until Rumsfeld was fired and Petraous took command.
In Afghanistan if Obama is not going to listen to General McChrystal, then we should withdraw and not needlessly waste our soldier’s lives as we did in Vietnam.
Also, instead of wasting his time showing his face on TV, Obama may want to actually do some real work and focus on Afghanistan – it is more imprtant than his DOA healtcare plan(s).

I could just weep for those poor soldiers whose Commander In Chief is doing a late night TV show cracking jokes as they are praying to just make it out of Afghanistan alive.

For once, I wish Obama and his team would exclude political considerations and think only of what’s good for the country and to help those in harms way. He should send the troops requested so that the tribesmen who are “on the fence” will be convinced of the US commitment; assemble an international group to oversee the election run-off to make sure it is free of ballot-stuffing and such; train the Afghan army as quickly as possible; go all out in hunting Bin Laden and his group then set a milestone for leaving.

Given O does not want to move on what he is being advised in Afghanistan; who is watching our troops back? to me this leaves them hanging.
Why are more deployments being scheduled through next year?
If all that is at stake is surrendering to the Mullahs, I say “do it”. We correctly went in there to kill terrorists. But, that was 8 years ago. Do we still need to be there for that purpose?
I don’t know the answer, but the time has come for Obama to explain to us why we need to stay there.

Hillary was on PBS last night…it would have before this post…talking about Afghanistan. She was very diplomatic befitting her office. She seemed to me to be giving the reasons why Obama is not yet increasing troops there. I understood her to say that there are other aspects of the situation that must be considered and there are equally qualified military advisors who are giving exactly the opposite advice as General McChrystal. It was my impression that she was in the camp supporting a delay in the decision. She made sense to me. I don’t know why we are in Afghanistan to begin with other than protecting somebody else’s oil pipelines and chasing down a phantom Osama bin Laden.
Hillary has to present Obama’s position. She can’t have her own position on anything while she’s SoS. She has considered Pakistan to be a major threat for a long time, and we’re still in Afghanistan because of that threat. Remember the debate where they were all asked which country they considered to be most dangerous? And Ozero replied “Iran”, Hillary replied “Pakistan”.

Senator Levin and Speaker Pelosi have been extremely clear about their opposition to re-inforcements. The majority of the people now favor leaving Afghanistan.
Face facts, show some courage, and decide which is more important: the troops who are in harm’s way, or your political allies, Commander-in-Chief!

The question President Obama should be asking is what does Gen. McChrystal and his staff know that Alexander the Great, Genghis Kahn, Great Britain, and Russia did not know?
Perhaps McChrystal knows that, unlike the countries and conquerors that you mentioned that had imperialistic intentions, our country is not interested in a permanent presense or rule in Afghanistan. Our goal there is to eliminate a very dangerous and evil faction that once had a reign of terror in Afghanistan, and is now threatening to re-establish that bloody and oppressive rule. It’s sort of like the great white hunter being invited in to shoot the man eating tiger that the locals were helpless to deal with. In this case however, the tiger is not only a threat to the locals, if allowed to grow in strength and/or obtain nukes, it becomes a threat to our shores. Wiping it out over there serves us as well as the majority of Afghanis.
