Obama off to Copenhagen

He is off to Copenhagen to lobby IOC to bring 2016 Olympics to Chicago.

One has to wonder who is running the country, as he goes gallivanting around the globe pretending he is the world president or something.

But even more importantly here is my dilemma with his trip. How will it reflect on him if they don’t pick Chicago?

Or is there a guarantee now that they will pick Chicago and therefore he is going in which case is this not a wasted trip on taxpayers’ backs in this difficult economy?

Or he must not have much faith in his wife’s persuasive powers that he thinks he can make the difference which leads me back to my first question and the fallout if his overtures do not pan out.

But this fits in with his style — intimidate IOC in the name of charm. Will they be called Racists if they don’t pick Chicago? If they are afraid and they will pick Chicago anyway for that reason, is this not a wasted trip leading me back to my second question?

US President Barack Obama is to visit Copenhagen to support Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games, the White House confirmed Monday. Obama will arrive in the Danish capital Friday morning, and return to the US following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting the same day when the decision about the 2016 host city will be made. The other contenders are Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo.

“President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will both make presentations to the IOC during Friday’s session,” said the White House in a statement.

“They will discuss why Chicago is best to host the 2016 Summer Games, and how the United States is eager to bring the world together to celebrate the ideals of the Olympic movement.”

Michelle Obama, who is leading the Chicago delegation, will arrive in Copenhagen on Wednesday along with talkshow host Oprah Winfrey and Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Obama and head of the White House Office on Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Sport.

Something is lacking in this whole extravaganza. Gravitas, perhaps? Or perspective as in Iran smolders, Afghanistan burns, and Obama heads to…Denmark

Moreover,

. . . one may smile, and smile, and be a villain;
At least I’m sure it may be so in Denmark

and,

There’s ne’er a villain dwelling in all Denmark
But he’s an arrant knave.

Comment by Katmoon | 2009-09-28 18:30:26

knave…yes,yes,yes, well said! :)

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-09-28 23:27:08

Perhaps Hamlet calls to him (at least his immense ego):
(please forgive me, but this may not be accurate, it’s totally from memory)

“What a piece of work is man,
How noble in reason,
How infinite in faculty,
In form and moving how express and admirable,
In action how like an angel,
In apprehension how like a God.
The beauty of the world,
The paragon of animals.”

I’m sure Obama may feel that this passage was simply Will Shakespear’s way of harralding Obama’s arrival on the scene.

Comment by Don | 2009-09-28 22:27:19

Well there most certainly will be in a couple of days! I certainly hope the IOC is concerned about security; if so, a gang style killing reported today should make them wonder — that with reports of killings coming out of Chicago with what seems to be increasing regularity should raise the committee’s level of concern quite significantly IMHO.

Comment by Hank | 2009-09-28 15:37:27

I wonder how much taxpayer money he will use to bribe the IOC.

Comment by hokma | 2009-09-28 18:53:10

Or how much of our taxpayer money he uses for everyone one of his Air Force One boondogles – especially this one. I would like to see the Chicago Olympic Committee reimburse our treasury for Obama’s expenses – at least have Oprah pay for it.

Comment by fif | 2009-09-28 23:03:01

That was my first question: how much is this costing the taxpayers during this lousy economy? Is he representing Chicago–as payback for masterminding his insubstantial career to put him in place for the presidency–or is he supposed to be focused on representing the damn country? This juvenile Celebrity President routine is already really old. Grow up already and focus on the war, the economy, health care etc. He’s like a teenager with his own plane. If I were the GOP, I’d hammer that point day and night: he spent $$$ to fly to Denmark during a struggling economy.

Comment by FranSC | 2009-09-30 12:39:16

The only thing that surprised me this morning was that Oprah did not descend the plane with Michelle in Copenhagen. Greta reported last week that Oprah and Michelle would be taking a trip together but did not say where. The picture of that will be hard to stomach because of the shameless way they all got to this moment.

Oprah had best take note of the firestorm being caused by this trip and all the participants. She should go separately instead of partaking of the lavish accommodations afforded these two. But I suspect that is Oprah’s main reason for going. This is one of the few things left in the world that she has not done – that is, going on ??official?? business and cavorting with a POTUS & FL. They will all be in hog heaven. Actually, this is the kind of thing the 0bamas thought being POTUS & FL was all about – not working day and night to pass his first real piece of legislation that they thought would be a slam dunk with his filibuster-proof congress.

He said there were more pressing matters that warrant his time than going after ACORN, he must have meant doing a sales pitch for the Olympics. Iran is doing whatever they are doing, unemployment is 9%, the troops in Afghanistan are awaiting his decision and all he has time for is giving more sales presentations. Is this a bad joke? Seriously, I didn’t think I could loathe anyone more than Dubya. Obobo is an ASS!

Comment by pm317 | 2009-09-28 16:00:23

“giving more sales presentations” to enrich his Chicago cronies — let us be real, I will be surprised if it really helps the people of that city or state.

Comment by oowawa | 2009-09-28 16:20:26

Oh, this article is fun, pm317: Thee One going to Copenhagen to bring the Olympics home to the Hog Butcher for the World? Actually, maybe Chicago is a swell idea after all. When the international guests arrive, they will be able to tour the slaughterhouses, or take an afternoon drive and visit beautiful Detroit. I mean, what fun sidetrips could there be if the Olympians were all cooped up in crummy old Rio de Janeiro?

Comment by pm317 | 2009-09-28 16:28:45

Maybe they will clean up all the corruption and run down districts a la state senator Obama’s? Maybe the residents will finally get their garden and the gazebo..

Comment by elizabethrc | 2009-09-29 08:28:50

I figured out a way to make sure Chicago doesn’t get the Olympics. Send the Olympics committe a Chicago newspaper each and every day. The violence, the black thuggery and corruption on the front page continuously should just about do it! Do you think they’d want the Olympics associated with the very worst that America produces?

Comment by oowawa | 2009-09-28 16:28:56

I understand stockyards and slaughterhouses in Chicago are becoming history. Oh well–all those tourists with cameras around their necks can take a stroll through the neighborhoods and housing projects instead. Ask the locals to take a few pictures of them in front of the graffiti, maybe.

Comment by barry bums a ciggie | 2009-09-28 16:38:48

Maybe ACORN can provide tours around the city and have international visitors register to vote as well. It’s a win-win.

Comment by Ken Sington | 2009-09-28 16:38:03

I’m not saying that the Olympics should be in Chicago and I detest Obama’s involvement in this, but your comment is really not fair to the city itself. Have you ever been there?

Let me get this straight.

Iran deadly weapons programs.
Iran testing rockets that would carry the warheads. Taliban at the brim of taking over Afghanistan. Mideast peace process at stand still.
Decision needed about the nature of US Troops in Afghanistan.
Iraqi is going to the dogs.

That’s just on the international front. Domestically, health care reform support at its lowest. Congress has not produced a workable bill since Bush left office. Unemployment at its highest. The banking system is still on shaky grounds.

Now guess what the US president is concern about? The Olympic? Are you fucking kidding me??????

Comment by candymarl | 2009-09-28 17:21:08

You can be sure that Obama has it on good authority that Chicago will get the olumpics! He would never expose himself to such humiliation, should his grand powers of persuadion fail. This is just another set up.

Barrie Bums: You are quite right. ACORN is just not important enough because of all the other pressing obligations he has: appearing on every talk show know to man, speaking at every chicken dinner social he can find, and flying to as many places as he can (is he trying to set a record?)while he is still President (hopefully not much longer).

So this is a grand theft of taxpayer moneys — an all expense paid unnecessary but luxurious trip for the wife and himself. What conflicts will he be resolving with the Danish? What benefits will he get for his grand appearance? To get them to send any part of 40,000 soldiers to Afghanistan?

elizabethrc,

maybe, just maybe, obama is being set up to look foolish for taking time out of his very busy schedule to go to Denmark personally (after we had already paid for Mechelle to go…what a waste of our money) so that THE ONE could mesmerize them into agreeing to having the Olympics in Chicago. We can only HOPE!

Oh, heart be still, that obama will fail in Denmark in procuring the Olympics in Chicago (unless he is promising something behind the scenes that will undermine America in some way in order to get the Olympic nod) and then he will be made to come up with yet another BS, non-sensical reason for his spending large amounts of taxpayer dollars (which we don’t have) and precious time away from the enormous problems that require the attention of our so-called PRESIDENT and perhaps even more of America will wake up to this FRAUD.

WE CAN ONLY HOPE.

I don’t know…0bama cannot imagine himself humiliated. Besides he’s taking Ophra just in case he needs some help wowing them. How utterly scandalous if it is a setup!

Comment by DeeLee | 2009-09-28 16:12:53

When will America wake up and smell the roses. This isn’t his idea (again), it’s his wife’s (like everything else he does or proposes). She’s the one that runs the show. She’s so in love with the grandeur of her position (and Air Force One) and he’s to spineless to tell her to stop sky hopping whenever she feels like it. (Remember her little flit around New York that scared the crap out of everybody? Remember her trip to London for a “fish-n-chips dinner?)

This about sounds right. From the NRO:

Chicago Is Getting the Olympics [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Some people seem to think that the president is taking time away from more important things to go to Copenhagen to lobby for Chicago to get the 2016 games. They’re wrong. He is taking time away from more important things to go get the credit for bringing the Olympics to Chicago. Does anyone seriously believe that the president would take a quick trip to Copenhagen with the possibility of coming back empty-handed? If the president is going, it’s because he knows that Chicago has already won. He’s going.

Comment by Hank | 2009-09-28 16:43:50

I totally agree with pm317, he wants the credit.

I read that Paris was the leading contender, not Chicago. Is this Obama trying to steal Zarkosy’s thunder? Talk about PETTY!! Using taxpayers’ dollars to fly to Copenhagen to beg the IOC to send the Olympics to Chicago so he can smirk at the French President. Shameful. And totally undignified too. But given his history, it’s not surprising. Anything to keep from having to sit at his desk and actually do some WORK!!

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-09-29 03:07:10

Is that what Zarkosy and BO where talking about at the G20?

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-09-29 03:22:34

How dare you call it petty. Neglecting our troops in Afghanistan is easily justified when weighed against securing the Olympics for the city that is the focal point of political corruption in our country. Look at the marvelous prestige and legitimacy that the ‘36 Olympics brought to Berlin! There’s a method to Obama’s madness.

Comment by Martha Washington Collier | 2009-09-28 16:59:35

I read on Drudge about the group dissing the idea of Chi-Town for the Olympics, opting for Rio instead.

Apparently, there’s a big deficit that goes along with hosting the Olympics…especially when you think of all the presidential cronies lining up at the trough in Chicago. Venues get built and never to be used again, many big pockets lined at the expense of the taxpayers…oh, wait. Isn’t that the way they ordinarily operate in-Thug Town?

I’m rooting for Rio too but you have to admit, anything that might spot light and bring down Daley’s rotten to the core regime, would be good for the people in the long run.

He should not even be going. It is not the job of the president of the US to lobby for one group of people at the expense of everyone else. Chicago representatives should handle this themselves and not expect US taxpayers to subsidize their wants.

This really burns me. He is totally doing whatever the heck he chooses–all on the taxpayer dole. Has he even read the Constitution to find out what powers are enumerated for the presidency? Way overstepping it. He is the dumbest Constitutional ’scholar’ ever.

Check out the cost over-runs and how much the Olympics cost the hosting city. That will scare the hell out of you. And when I went there yesterday, the trivia question answer said that it took Montreal 30 years to pay off their Olympic debt. Some fools on another blog think that the IOC pays for the venues, etc. They don’t, they just pay for the athletes to travel and for the officials, etc. Not a penny for stadiums and infrastructure, all that comes out of the host city’s budget. And that site also has a running ticker on the Chicago city deficit..it’s huge and rising fast. The only people who will profit from it are the politicians who get the graft. It will cost the US taxpayer billions we cannot afford. But since Obama has little idea of how to live within his means, it’s doubtful he understands overspending and its consequences. After all, he took out a second mortgage to finance their lifestyle when living in Chicago instead of cutting back on their expenditures so they could live on his and Michelle’s salaries. Living on a budget and making choices about how to spend money wisely are not things Obummer knows how to do in his personal life so why would he bother to do so in his public job?

Comment by DAB | 2009-09-29 13:30:17

I heard that fully 50% of Chicago residents are pulling for Rio because they feel that city transportation is already a nightmare for them and they just don’t want to go there.

Comment by hokma | 2009-09-28 18:50:25

Just like in New York, the residents do not want the Olympics and government officials are trying to stifle that news.
In addition, and much more disturbing, is how little the Daley/Obama government cares about their home city. While Obama and Daley Machine are focused on trying to get the Olympic bid, kids are in daily danger of being killed for not joining gangs or being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“. . . a record 36 Chicago Public Schools students have been killed this school year, marking the third straight year that youth homicides have climbed into double digits. Chicago has surpassed New York City and Los Angeles for having the highest youth homicide rate in the nation.”

“Black youths, he said, are two times more likely than white youths to fail or drop out of school, and at the same time they are also eight to 10 times more likely to be victims of homicide than whites.”

Obama’s priorities are about Obama and not the people he serves now or before.

With all the problems we have here in USA, when is he going to settle down, and get to work? He’s not doing anything about the job creation situation, the overall economic problems, and I thought he is dedicated to getting the health care bill passed.

I agree with former comment-I think Michelle is running the show, and she just thinks their job is to fly all over the world, eat and be entertained at taxpayer expense. Maybe she will wear that red/black vomit dress, and that will seal the deal.

Leave it to that fool to make this a major initiative of his presidency. He probably thinks hosting the Olympics will make America feel “better” about herself. You know…take our minds off our worries and fears regarding his policies and actions which are scaring the American people half to death. Arrogant to the nth degree.

Comment by mel | 2009-09-28 20:38:58

Major initiative hardly, it is the ONLY reason for his presidency, to lock down the 2016 games for the crook Daley and to manipulate tons of Fed money to Chicago for Daley to spend. Initiative #1 done in the Billions of rescue money he can wheel and deal and second initiative is to sucker the IOC into awarding Chicago the 2016 games into the hands of the most corrupt mayor in the world!

All Obama’s friends including Jarret sit on the Chicago Olympics commitee and all stand to make millions off the games even the quiet Bll Ayers who’s father revived a piece of land just minutes from the Olympic site and needing mass transit to make the land and developement prices soar and turn Ayers et al into being worth mega millions!

Nothing happens in Cicago just by chance, their is always a reason behind it that is dirty!

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2009-09-29 23:33:29

This just makes me sick. Right after the trip to Denmark was covered on one of the channels tonight, the very next story was of a young Chicago teen, an honor student, beaten to death by a mob of other teens. A video was made of the beating, for at least 3 minutes someone watched and taped as an entire crowd jeered and cheered the murderous thugs on. This is all too common in the “home town” of the mighty One. Why should they be rewarded with this prize when they can’t even re-build tenements for their poor? I hope to hell that the IOC awards this to Rio. The games have never been held in a South American country. For God’s sake, someone needs to say no to this man.

Comment by rw | 2009-09-29 02:00:06

Police and gangs battle it out in Rio streets. The gangs are often better armed. Then there are the tourists that get shot by the police because of mistaken identity. Rio not safe, brown eyed Lula needs to take care of his house before inviting guests.

I’m in Chicago and I know why he’s spending his time for this stupid project.

(I really dont want the Olympics here.. it’s going to turn this already bankrupt city more bankrupt… and also into a police state)

For the longest time, the world’s largest housing project was directly east of the I-90/94 (Dan Ryan) between the highway and the lake in the South Side.

They tore them all down like 10 years ago. There is nothing there now.

There is nowhere in the city that has large amount of available large-scale developable land than along that corridor that abuts the highway..

PLUS theres tons of freespace surrounding the south and west boundaries of Hyde Park , where the Obama corrupt mothership is

I demarked these areas here, chicago is the zoomed out picture.

Now.. who is going to get the money to build all the crap needed for an Olympics?

Just think of the money that is going to flow there.

I can vomit it makes me so sick knowing the inferno of corruption to come.

Comment by hokma | 2009-09-29 09:11:16

I’m from New York and the majority of New Yorkers did not want the Olympics. It was purely an effort on the part of the New York government to get incremental federal money for projects necessary to improve the city for the Olympics.

In Chicago you also have a terrible crime problem with gangs. Last school year experienced the highest murder rate of students in history.

It is sadly ironic to see photo ops of the Obamas, Oprah, and Jackie Joyner Kersey – all smiles – trying to sell Chicago as the city of choice – when at the same time fellow African Americans are being murdered at alarming rates with no solution in site and money that should have been spent on fighting crime is being used to spruce up Chicago in its pitch for the Olympics.

Does the man understand that he is President of the entire US, and not just an emissary for the city of Chicago? He doesn’t belong there. He belongs at his desk in the oval office, even though I am sure he doesn’t know what to do when he IS there. Don’t we have an olympic committee that pleads our case? Also, could somebody please tell me what Michelle, his daughters and Oprah are doing there? I am still so pissed at Oprah that I have refused to watch her show, or anything else she has her fingers in. She legitimized this incompetent empty suit when he didn’t deserve it. Shame on her.

Instead of running off to Copenhagen shouldn’t he be addressing this? Yet another one of his Czars. The Czar for Safer Schools. Apparently he’s going to bring us safer schools by encouraging young boys who have sex with older men to use a condom. There are uncover video tapes for this you can also find on the net, but very few are reporting on it. Guess the NYT’s has to wait they’re not, even with audio, and articles from other reputable news outlets.

From the Washington Times:
A teacher was told by a 15-year-old high school sophomore that he was having homosexual sex with an “older man.” At the very least, statutory rape occurred. Fox News reported that the teacher violated a state law requiring that he report the abuse. That former teacher, Kevin Jennings, is President Obama’s “safe school czar.” It’s getting hard to keep track of all of this president’s problematic appointments. Clearly, the process for vetting White House employees has broken down.

In this one case in which Mr. Jennings had a real chance to protect a young boy from a sexual predator, he not only failed to do what the law required but actually encouraged the relationship.

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-09-29 01:57:53

What do you think the reaction would be if Bush had appointed someone with the history and character of Jennings? Liberal heads would explode. But he’ll get a pass because by comparison to all the other creeps that Obama has placed in power, he’s just par for the course. I guess they need dickweeds like the radical communist Van Jones to make the rest of them seem acceptable. This administration is an endless police line up of some of the worst individuals to ever have prominent roles in our government. The only accurate historical comparison would be the late 30’s Germany. And the eventual results will be the same.

The gross double standards between Democrat and Republican “public servants” is a miserable indication of an increasingly pragmatic attitude that has become detatched from the morals and values that are the foundation for a healthy society, and especially the type of society that made America the greatest country in history.

In my opinion this is just like Bill Clinton going to North Korea. It is already in the bag. We all know of the corruption of the olympic committee. I am sure by now all of the right people have been properly greased by Obama supportors, Soros, Kahlidi and friends. He knows they have it or he would not be going.

Just a fun fact in case you have not heard. We all know Valarie Jarret’s past I assume if you have been listening at all to Beck. Her father, a self described communist worked with communist Frank Marshall Davis, mentor of Obama.
We all know that Jarrett is just as guilty as Rezco in land deals in Chicago being the same kind of dirty slumlord as Rezco. Under Obama’s protection and with the tax dollers he brought them home they purchased projects and allowed them to fall further into dis-repair while the poor residents suffered. Obama their loving senator of course did nothing.

Anyway now she of course and Michelle have been the driving forces behind getting the olympics for Chicago and guess what? Guess who just happens to own the land and the rights to the olympic stadium.
That’s right. The Valarie Jarret’s company! Of course she dissolved her ownership when she went to work with the Obama’s bilking the American people but we all know what is going on here don’t we.

So now we (the taxpayers) paid for her to buy the projects. We paid to fix them up. Then we paid for the people to live there. Then we paid renovation money when she let them fall apart. And now we can pay for her to develop them into olympic buildings!

Is this a great country or what?
