Gimme everything here…Gimme, Gimme

Because we are black[and impoverished and need inspiration] and we want it[because we are elite and special] and whoopee do.. America elected me, me, me! See it is not so bad. And we brought Oprah!

That is what the IOC heard in their speeches on Friday in Copenhagen. The Obamas should fire the speechwriter. But then again, what would they do with the fumbling, bumbling, and other inanities and stupidities going on in their own heads? These two self-absorbed people are unbelievably shallow.

moioc

In her speech [video below the fold] she invoked Martin Luther King with the subliminal word dream; recycled her dad’s story from her Democratic convention speech; lingered for half the speech on how her dad would have been proud to see the Olympics in his beloved hometown after having raised two smart children with values somehow inspired by sports.

She concluded her speech by throwing a Kennedy in there asking IOC to think about what Olympics can do for her and her city, her country. And, oh, she threw in some cheap theatrics with intonations, pauses, and voice modulations to affect emotion — for God’s sake, she is the first lady of the richest and the most powerful country on earth and she begged and pleaded [for inspiration]. And there was nothing much about what America will do for the Olympics or the world — nothing much about what was in it for the IOC or the world’s greatest athletes or even why it was their responsibility to come to Chicago and inspire her and others, and especially those other dads like her dad. See the stupidity of it all?

Earlier in another speech, she had insulted her Chicago delegation indicating how she and her buddies had sacrificed to go over to Copenhagen.

He as usual invoked his Kenyan dad; told the IOC they would fall in love with the city he fell in love with and as they already have fallen in love with his wife as he did; lectured them about diversity, dream (there it is again, the subliminal word), American dream and how he ran for the presidency to make the world a better place; how on a clear November night the Americans saw light and in their inordinate good sense elected him, the grand exhibit of everything diverse, and good, and full of hope and change. He concluded that the IOC will also find Chicago diverse, and full of Hope and Change. Oh, he threw in Olympics and its spirit along the way with his Hope and Change. And oh yes, he cautioned that the two-three weeks of celebrations in the name of Olympic spirit in the wonderful Chicago will not solve all the world problems. What a hoot!

[HT to moderateinthemiddle for the video]

Looks like they went in headlong with their tin ears. Did they at least make a sound and intelligent argument to the IOC? No, they threw gobbledygook at them(the same kind they have been throwing at the gullible American people) and the IOC was too smart to fall for it.

18 votes of the 94 total, two of them from our own members and eliminated in the first round.

And the word you don’t hear on this side of the Atlantic from the Obama media whores is HUMILIATION, but you can read about it here and here.

And why the hell did she wear GOLD? Wasn’t that incredibly juvenile?

Exactly what did America lose? Well, there are those pesky dead GIs, people losing their homes, no COLA increase for Social Security for the next two years, unemployment on the rise, bankster bailouts, falling US dollar and a supine media.

But let’s not talk about those things.

The Olympics are gone! (((Sob)))

Comment by Johnny Two Dog | 2009-10-04 02:48:13

Doh’bama is the ONLY President to personally pitch to the IOC to bring the Games to the US. All the other Presidents must have had more important things on their agendas. The economy, jobs, and health care must not be that important to Doh.

The IOC saw right through the Doh’bama’s BS. The IOC voters are a lot smarter than American voters.

MEchelle claimed she watched Carl Lewis win Olympic gold while she was perched on her daddy’s lap. The first Olympics for Carl Lewis were in 1984. That would place a 20 yr old MEchelle on her daddy’s lap.

And I thought the Jackson 5 family was kooky. The other side of the mountain in Appalachia has nothing on Doh’bama’s entourage.

Comment by mountainaires | 2009-10-04 09:21:14

I believe that other world leaders have made pitches to the IOC in the past. You’re misinformed on Obama being the first.

The fact is, Rio simply had the best team, the most salient sales pitch–FIRST SOUTH AMERICAN OLYMPICS GAMES–and the biggest selling point–WORLD CUP HOST in 2014.

The Obamas were both–as usual self-absorbed, juvenile, and overly impressed with their own charm. And, yes, that yellow dress was WAY TOO OBVIOUS; not to mention that she looked like a linebacker in it.

Comment by Claudy | 2009-10-04 09:37:30

Obama is the FIRST AMERICAN PRES to make a pitch to the IOC, not the FIRST leader of another country to do same.

Comment by tango | 2009-10-04 11:57:35

And I believe that 50% of Rio’s citizens didn’t protest having the Olympics. Maybe the IOC felt it was best to not tke the Olympics to where they’re really not wanted.

You are nothing but a pig – seriously, get over it. Rio gets the Olympics because they probably had a better bid and no south american city has ever hosted an olympics before – this is their fourth try for god’s sakes. for you to be whinning about this and blaming Obama is really beyond belief. if he had NOT gone you same people would be blaming him for losing the olympics and accusing him of hating america and the athletes. your hate is so deep you can’t see beyond it to anything.

Comment by mountainaires | 2009-10-04 09:26:51

I disagree, SoCalDem. I don’t really like “bitch-slapped” because it is a term denoting using violence against women. Whether or not one uses it is their choice; but in my view, it reflects badly on those who use it. It’s a linguistic term that comes directly from gangsta rap, which always degrades women.

Comment by catherine | 2009-10-04 11:22:12

Uh….no. I respect your opinion of the term but it does not necessarily denote that the user is advocating violence towards women or coming from a gangsta rap background.

The term today is more often associated to describe a man being publicly humiliated and belittled by another man.

They lost the $70 Million dollars they wasted trying to get the Olympics. I wonder how that money could have helped the schools in Chicago….

And the only people to profit from the Olympics are the builders and cronies. Tax payers foot the bill for the Billions of dollars that the Olympics cost.

Rio is a way better choice – and FAIR, since they have never had an Olympic game in South America. The climate is WAY better in August in Rio than Chicago. AND, lots of people will probably travel to Rio who would have never gone before.

Like someone said above, a POTUS has NEVER gone to a bid before, so Obama made it political and ALL about him when he went. He inserted himself in the middle of this mess, even AFTER he said he wasn’t going because he had more important matters at hand. They probably knew it wasn’t a sure thing, so his cronies who helped him *win* the nomination made him go.

He gave it a half ass attempt, rolling in with TOTUS, and gave his same old tired speech about HIM.

They saw through it and said thanks, but no thanks. Obama deserves the criticism because he made it about him. He wasn’t damned if he did, damned if he didn’t because no other POTUS ever did.

Chicago has had their fair share of *wins* this past year. They can suck it up and fix their state now. Stop all these kids killing each other….

sarainitaly: “They probably knew it wasn’t a sure thing, so his cronies who helped him *win* the nomination made him go.”

sara, I think you’re right. I think they told him the bid was in trouble but he could rescue it with his personal charm. Believing all his press, Obama went off to Copenhagen to make sure right was done and the Olympics went to Chicago.

But I think when the Obamas arrived in Copenhagen it was instantly clear to them that they would not prevail. That, IMO, is why Obama did not stick around for the awarding ceremony, as Brazil’s President da Silva did. Barack Obama has NEVER missed an opportunity to celebrate himself. I’m sure he would have stayed in Copenhagen if he’d thought there was a chance Chicago would win.

You have to wonder if in the end the Obamas did more harm than good.

Oh, please. You keep posting the same phrase. We could ill afford to have this here now with the construction expense and Chicago needing so much to take care of its own kids and citizens — they do not need to be booted out of their own neighborhoods to build this stuff. The hosting city usually winds up losing billions. Who is supposed to foot the bill?

The President should not have spent political capital on this with all the pressing matters he has at home and abroad. Our troops are dying in the “war of necessity” so let him spend more than 25 minutes with Gen. McChrystal figuring out what to do. That is a matter of life and death but he can take several more weeks to make a decision when he was supposed to have this all figured out. Yet health care, not to be enacted til 2013 has to be rammed through before Thanksgiving. Have I got that right?

His people did not give the best presentation and were self centered to boot. The best presentation won. Good for Rio. He did not do his homework in advance of going but thought everyone would worship at his feet as per usual. That was reckless on his part. As usual he and his cadre did not do their homework. He does not have good people advising him on these matters.

How in the hell is he ever going to get better if he cannot be criticized for the mistakes he makes. But this is silly. He isn’t going to listen anyway. Not as long as he as Jarrett, Axelrove and Emanuel whispering in his ear.

thrilled at America’s loss

Let me postulate this to you. Rio is an American city. Geographically they are. But, also in spirit Rio is an American city. We were a part of the first world… sure. We used to be the shining city on the hill where we welcomed those who would work hard for a batter future and where hard work would bring success. We used to be that. Then there was the second world. The Soviet empire where you worked for the prosperity of the state. Where the state knew best and took from people according to their means and gave to people according to their needs. In that world things worked best when you spread the wealth around. Just as we used to be the shining place on the hill… we now are more like the second world. No place makes that more apparent and is a better example of this than Chicago. Then there is Rio. A third world city for sure, but now the shining city on the hill where you can work hard and according to your work you can succeed. No, they don’t have the social structure of the second world countries. Let me postulate that Rio has taken it’s rightful place as a leader of the first world. They are an American city.

I just love this “unpatriotic” meme from the progs, who take every chance they get to diss the country, complain and whine if they don’t get their own way. But now, when the Olympic Games were not a slam dunk the “O,” when anyone who questions the wisdom of having the Games held in Chicago or any other American city when we’re all in a world of financial trouble and standing on the brink of bankruptcy, we get the flag waving.

A sweet, new kind of hypocrisy wrapped in the red, white and blue!

Comment by proud mobster | 2009-10-04 03:37:15

You’re right — its the hypocrisy that gets us riled. Among the new taxes for Healthcare will be a tax on Hearing Aids and False Teeth–which will hurt the elderly. While the Obamas travel on separate jets to sell the gang infested Chicago as the best place to hold the Olympics and consider themselves sacrificing their time by traveling to Copenhagen at all. Perhaps if they had used one less Jet we could have saved enough money for a few pair of false teeth.

Botsy,
Don’t you realize yet that he doesn’t care about anything but himself? That he just as soon as step on you as look at you? Use you up and throw you away? He does not care about this country.
Take a look at what he did when he was a Congressman for his district and what he did to the people who lived there. He used them. He, through his felonious Syrian friend, Tony Rezko accepted monies that were to be used to improve on the housing. He did that alright. He used the money to buy himself a house that as of last year was valued at 1.9 million dollars. He bought it right next door to his friend Rezko.

Obama was never a Congressman, he was a state senator. Still didn’t do much, but there is a big difference in the offices. If you are going to rant, get your facts straight. Nothing detracts from a good argument as much as presenting the wrong facts as proof. And don’t forget this little nugget…when the people in the housing sued Rezko for heat and repairs, Obama was on his defense team. Against his own constituents, he defended the slumlord. It doesn’t get much lower than that. I guess he missed the “conflict of interest” class at law school.

Comment by leslie | 2009-10-04 13:13:15

I thought Obama was a state representative in the Illinois house of reps. Then he ran for state senate. THEN he ran for the Senate in D.C.
THEN for his current position.

Comment by FLDemFem | 2009-10-04 15:12:30

Nope..here is what Wikipedia says about his political resume.

Obama served three terms in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. Following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, Obama ran for United States Senate in 2004

During his stint as a state senator, he did so little that Emil Jones, the Speaker, put Obama’s name on 22 bills as a sponsor. He had nothing to do with writing them or working for them, he just got the credit. Sound familiar? Those bills form his “legislative credentials” from the Illinois Senate. Those are his only legislative credentials.

Then after 18 mos. as a US Senator, most of it spent traveling and “writing” his 2nd Book, “The Audacity of Hope”, he ran for President. He did not hold one single meeting of his sub-committee on Afghanistan while he was a Senator. Too busy, he said.

Comment by leslie | 2009-10-05 00:11:54

You are correct. I mistakenly gave him more credit than he “deserved”. He went from screwing the people of Chicago while organizing them to screwing them while in the Illinois senate. (But first he screwed Alice Palmer – the incumbent – out of her place on the ballot.)
http://nicedeb.wordpress.com/2008/06/02/not-pretty-how-barack-obama-won-his-illinois-senate-seat/
He absolutely did little in the senate. And Emil Jones did, indeed, put BHO’s name on many, many bill and thus p/o’d all those legislators who did the work.

thanks for correcting my error.

It wasn’t America’s loss. It was Chicago’s loss, and the last poll I saw stated only 48% of Chicagoans wanted to bend their will to Daley’s idea. Not even 50%.

If it would have been an AMERICAN presentation, I and many I know would have chosen New Orleans for the honor. Why, would new Englanders support New Orleans? Because we are conscious of being AMERICAN in the true sense of the word, and as AMERICAN’s New Orleans is still owed.

This horrific dog and pony show by a bunch of emotional 18 years olds was disgusting. Yes I am glad they lost. Perhaps the 18-25 American Idol crowd will now see how very much our country has lost with these immature adolescents in OUR White House.

The rest of the world knows and hopefully Americans will wake up and insist that some ADULTS take charge and lead.

To be fair, Hillary claimed to be named after Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to summit Mt. Everest. Except, she was born years before that event, when Edmund Hillary was a complete unknown. Both Bill and Hill have needlessly stretched the truth on many occasions, much like the Obamas, so don’t be so quick to throw stones, unless you can aknowledge and condemn the same behavior of your heroes.

Comment by Ginger | 2009-10-04 11:03:18

That story was a sweet story her mother told her as to how she ended up with the name Hillary.

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-10-04 13:13:13

I don’t point it out often, but I still notice quite often the huge blind spot that many Bill and Hill supporters have for their heroes. I can’t help but recognize the stark hypocrisy on display when these same rabid Clinton supporters accuse Obama supporters of the identical, blind, unquestioning, defense of their darlings that they are guilty of themselves.

Ginger, your response is a perfect example of the type of strained and flimsy defense that bothers me, because when people like you believe such utter nonsense and hokey excuses, it indicates to me that your devotion to your hero has destroyed your objectivity.

Historically, when too many people lose their objectivity in favor of a cultist worship for an individual or a cause, the results are Jonestown, Hitler, Stalin, the Ayatollas, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro, and countless others. It’s the same cult of personality that we’re witnessing now with the Obamas.

Several years ago, I returned to my alma mater for the home coming game. There was a play in the game when a player for the opposing team made a brilliant 99 yard runback for a touch down. When I stood up to applaud what I recognized as a great athletic effort, the fans around me threw all kinds of crap at me. Their lockstep devotion for OUR team prevented them from aknowledging the skills and athleticism of the other team, and they made me an outcast for applauding the only decent play our opponents had, (our team crushed them, as I knew they would)

Don’t lose your objectivity, because without it, your criticisms of the Obamas will appear to be simple blind partisanship. And right now, there can’t be enough credible critics of the Obamas, they certainly deserve no quarter.

Comment by tek | 2009-10-04 13:38:02

Onofre: Don’t lose your objectivity: You mean like the Republicans who still think Dubya was a great president and what the country is a Republican majority?

George W. Bush destroyed this country and anyone who can’t admit that has a REAL problem with objectivity.

Bill Clinton won the nomination and the election all by himself. He didn’t have ACORN and a corrupt DNC helping him out. And he got results–got this country in great shape–only president since Wilson who’s done that.

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-10-04 14:42:45

Nice try Tek, but I haven’t lost my objectivity regarding Bush, the way YOU have; you would never recognize or admit many of the positives from the Bush administration (and don’t be peurile and claim there WERE none). I’ve often pointed out my displeasure with many of Bush’s policies (immigration comes to mind) and his actions, from the expansion of government to pandering far too often to the left side of the aisle, and getting nothing but grief in return.

And Tek, nowhere in my post did I even bring up Bush, YOU dragged him into this debate in what has become a cliched tactic of Obamunists as well as Clintonistas; you excuse the excesses, lies, and mistakes of YOUR icons by petulently bawling that Bush was worse. It has become a very hackneyed deflection maneuver.

Wilson? Are you joking? he is one if the worst Presidents of the last century. And Clinton might like to claim credit for prosperity during his reign, but mostly he just signed onto bills and policies that were crafted in the Republican Congress, or do you not understand that Congress holds the purse strings? Wellfare reform, free trade, and the end of the cold war (all Republican contributions) all contributed vastly more to prosperity than ANYTHING that was proposed primarily by Clinton. In fact, name a single major policy or initiative that emerged from the Clinton White House that was responsible for a booming economy and erasure of the deficit. His first major effort was Hillary care, how well did that work for him, hmmm? During his first two years when he had a Democrat Congress, what of any significance did he accomplish? Clinton was mostly along for the ride while Republicans were doing the driving. And despite 9/11, the economy during the first six years of Bush was running relatively smoothly until……the Democrats retook control of Congress. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to connect the dots. I’m sure that even the most neutral observer would not miss the correlation, and the CAUSES for that correlation.

Now we have total Democrat control of our government; how’s THAT working for all of us?

Comment by Ferd Berfle | 2009-10-04 15:25:17

Sorry, Onofre, but I am a Clinton supporter but neither rabid nor bot-ish about it. For me there was simply no better candidate. Had there been one, I might have supported him/her. I thought she would have been a better President than either That One or McCain. I still say so to this day and if that makes me unobjective, then so be it. Better that than a blue- or red-Kool-aide chugging slackjaw following the herd off either the cliff up ahead on the right or on the left–take your pick. As it was, I voted for a Republican for the first time in 32 years.

As for losing objectivity, look no further than Chimpy or Oblahblah supporters for a better example of lack of objectivity. Moreover, now that I think about it, maybe it is time for the Centrists in this country to get a little more radical about stopping the dogmatic and invincibly ignorant right-wing and the hand-wringing and invincibly ignorant left-wing from destroying what remains of this country.

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-10-04 15:50:46

My observation was not meant to characterize supporters of any particular person as being unobjective, quite the opposite. It is entirely reasonable to support the candidate of your choice based upon you own particular ideology, that’s obvious. What bothers me is the dogmatic support of an individual (with the same blind devotion people have to their particular religions) that prevents people from even recognizing or admitting any faults of their star. I voted for McCain also, but he was not my first choice, and I can easily identify and admit to the things that I don’t like about him, and there’s a lot! I would NEVER try argue that he was without flaws, and I would never hold that position with ANYONE! The target of my criticism here is the type of person that lionizes someone to the point of perfection, a particularly irritating mindset no matter who is being placed on the pillar. And it is a clear sign of an objectivity deficit.

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-10-04 15:59:26

I was spammed Ferd, but you don’t need to apologize. You can support anyone you wish, but if you can still recognize and admit to the faults of your candidate, you are not the target that I was aiming at with my critique.

Comment by Ginger | 2009-10-04 17:08:50

The admiration I have for Hillary is predicated on what she has really achieved, worked hard on, no hand-out kind of person she is.
I don’t know why Hillary’s mother really named her Hillary. It must have been a difficult name to have in grade school. About the time Sir Edmund Hillary would have done his climb is when kids in school would have realized her name was quite different than the norm and she may have been teased. Though I didn’t elaborate on point, it may have been the story her mother told Hillary to make her feel better.
Also, having such a strong name and the knowledge that it was in reference to a strong person would certainly have been quite the motivator for the kind of person Hillary is.
All those years Hillary just accepted it as fact because her mother, a person she loves and trusts, told her so.

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-10-04 18:41:05

Did her mother also tell her that she was dodging sniper bullets on the tarmak in Kosovo? Did her mother remind Hillary in her 50’s, who was born and raised in Chicago, that she had been a retroactively lifelong Yankees fan? Did her mother teach her how to feign amnesia when she was questioned about her remarkable abilities to parlay an initial 3K investment in cattle futures into more than 100K in less than a year? Did her mother recommend sacking the entire non-partisan White House travel office (many hard working public servants that had served loyally for years under administrations of both parties) so that she could replace them with her pals? Did her CPA mother explain to her that she could write off Bill’s used underwear as a charitable deduction? I suppose you could blame all of this on her mother.

Be honest Ginger, if a Republican had done or said any one of these things, they’ld be pilloried forever. Dan Quayle was (and still is) ridiculed for simply misspelling potato. Bill got a complete pass when he fired ALL of the Federal Attorneys, (many were investigating Democrats) while Bush was hounded for firing only 8 of them. Does this seem equitable to you?

Look, I didn’t want to get onto a Hillary expose, I just want people to be more balanced and pragmatic with their support of ANYONE. Obama could take a dump on the White House lawn and his supporters would herald it as an inspirational work of Soft Sculpture. The obots that come to this site are congenitally unable to recognize a single fault of their Messiah, do you want the same to be said of you with regard to Hillary? It may seem counterintuitive, but recognizing and openly accepting the foibles of the people you support actually gives you more credibility when you are pointing out their positive traits, because you will not be giving the appearance of blind idolatry. I would probably be more inclined to at least consider the arguments of an Obama supporter if they could be more cognizant and admitting of his massive flaws, lies, and mistakes. I like and listen to Pat Cadell, a lifelong Democrat, because he calls ‘em as he sees ‘em, and he doesn’t pull punches when commenting on Democrats. His objectivity enhances his credibility, and gives him standing to be as critical as he wants and still be taken seriously.

But I still get to vote and I can maintain my objectivity without it becoming the end rather than the means to a decision.

Comment by creeper | 2009-10-05 10:31:05

Rarely do I take exception to something you write, Onofre. But this gives me pause:
“Bill got a complete pass when he fired ALL of the Federal Attorneys, (many were investigating Democrats) while Bush was hounded for firing only 8 of them.”

If you’re referring to Clinton firing all the Federal Attorneys when he took office, that’s standard practice. They serve at the pleasure of the president and when the White House changes hands that’s one of the spoils that go to the victor.

It is NOT equivalent to sacking, what?, eight attorneys in the middle of your term because they are not destroying the opposition fast enough.

Not for one moment would I claim the Clintons are more honest than any other politician. The difference lies in their ability recognize what needs to be done and then do it.

Repeat after me…”ALL POLITICIANS LIE”.

The first rule in applying for a job is to tell the prospective employer what you will be able to do for him/her.

In going to Copenhagen, the Obamas told the IOC what it could do for Chicago by awarding the Olympics to the city. How stupid and self-serving not to point out the advantages to have to Olympics in Chicago. They thought by showing up, it would be handed to Chicago.

I am a lifelong Chicagoan who did not realize that I was electing a mayor for life when I voted for him for the first time in 1989. I never voted to re-elect him. The city has many problems as do many places, but it is a very good place to live.

Comment by rw | 2009-10-03 20:36:58

Chicago has had the same mayor since 1989?? That’s not a mayor, that’s a viceroy.

Comment by Docelder | 2009-10-03 21:28:52

Yes, Massachusetts had the same senator for 49 years… that isn’t a senator it’s a lord.

Comment by rw | 2009-10-03 22:15:50

Point made. But having a mayor or governor (viceroy) for two decades is a bit different from having a senator (lord) for 49. In the former, the local corruption is insurmountable for a semblance of fair elections, in the latter, the corruption is centered in DC.

And, never heard of “Massachusetts style” politics. Pretty independent people if you think that despite Kerry and Kennedy endorsement of Obama, Hillary Clinton took the state.

Comment by Docelder | 2009-10-03 22:20:28

They are both symptoms of corruption. Both stay in place for so long for much of the same reason. That reason is that power itself is self perpetuating. We need to watch the White House carefully. Every occupant as of late has grabbed more power than the last. At some point, we are going to have a rude surprise I am afraid.

Before him, it was his dad, Daley, Sr. who was mayor for a few decades. Corruption must run in their blood.

Comment by lorac | 2009-10-04 03:51:59

There was a female mayor in between the two Daleys’ terms – her name is excaping me – was it Jane Bryant?

Under her mayor-dom, they had totally refurbished an apartment complex (Cabrini Greens)so that the poor would have nicer places to live in instead of having to live in squalor. She, the mayor, also moved in to show her faith that with this help, this neighborhood could be better.

One guess what happened. Yup, the tenants, given a totally fixed up apartment complex to live in, totally trashed the place. Garbage all over, graffitti everywhere on the freshly painted walls, urine in the hallways and elevators, fists thrown through new walls.

So the mayor moved out. No good deed goes unpunished.

Comment by Mar | 2009-10-04 09:54:37

Richard M. Daley was the current mayor’s father. He died of a heart attack in December, 1976. Michael Bilandic finished the term. Jane Byrne, who was a protege of Richard M. was the 1st female mayor from 1979 to 1983. When Byrne was running for re-election, he opponents in the primary were Richard J. Daley and Harold Washington. Some of Richard Daley’s supports had bumper sticker that said “Dump the bitch, vote for Rich.”

Harold Washington was elected in 1983 and re-elected in 1987 and was the 1st African American mayor. Washington died of a heart attack the week of Thanksgiving in 1987.

Then the City Council elected Ald. Eugene Sawyer as interim mayor until an election could be held to fill the remainder of Washington’s term. Richard J. Daley won the primary and election in 1989 and has been mayor ever since.

Who the hell cares? As president everything is already convenient enough for him. micHELLe rambles on about her dad which has nothing to do with the Olympics.

The 0bamas are just plain snobs and I am glad they got stiffed and put in their place. Had Chicago been selected all we would have heard about for the next 7 years is how the 0bamas brought the games to the US and Chicago. 0bama has done nothing but play games since he has been president and I hope he gets this message in 2012 from people who are finally fed up with him: Let the games end. A sense of stunned bewilderment suffused Air Force One and the White House. Only after the defeat did many advisers ask questions about the byzantine politics of the Olympic committee. Valerie Jarrett, the president’s senior adviser and a Chicago booster who persuaded him to make the trip while at the United Nations last week, had repeatedly compared the contest to the Iowa caucuses.

But officials said the administration did not independently verify Chicago’s chances, relying instead on the Chicago 2016 committee assertions that the city had enough support to finish in the top two. Mr. Obama, Michelle Obama, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Ms. Jarrett worked the phones in recent weeks without coming away with a sense of how behind Chicago really was.

“Most of our information came from the committee and the Chicago folks,” said David Axelrod, a senior adviser to the president. “But I don’t want to leave the impression that somehow we went on the basis of faulty information. We went because it was the right thing to do.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/03/sports/03obama.html?hp

““Nearly one year ago, on a clear November night, people from every corner of the world gathered in the city of Chicago or in front of their televisions to watch the results of the U.S. presidential election,” Mr. Obama told the committee. “Their interest wasn’t about me as an individual. Rather, it was rooted in the belief that America’s experiment in democracy still speaks to a set of universal aspirations and ideals.””

‘One year ago, the world rejoiced in my election, I was applauded, I am adored, you must send the Olympics to this city because they were so happy I was elected’.

Good grief.

Yeah, I read that NYTimes article earlier. Unbelievable. My thinking is that they would have at least got a runner up position if these people had behaved themselves with an appropriate presentation. I can’t imagine MO NOT offending someone. Her GOLD dress is a tell (and offensive if I were an IOC member) — she and they must have thought it was a done deal. They believed their own PR as usual.

Comment by rw | 2009-10-04 00:01:25

From the LA Times:

“The intelligence that we had from the U.S. Olympic Committee and Chicago bid team was that it was very close and therefore well worth our efforts,” said Valerie Jarrett, a senior White House advisor. “The message was that . . . a personal appeal from the president would make a huge difference.”

and:

Within the White House, Jarrett relayed the argument that a presidential visit might make the difference. A close friend of the president from Chicago, she had been a strong proponent of the drive to deliver the Games.

In the spring, Jarrett told an IOC panel that the White House was prepared to lend enormous logistical support to the Games.

Jarrett was behind hiring Van Jones, and now this, I wonder what other fiasco lie in wait as she wrecks works the WH.

Comment by Lyn | 2009-10-04 00:20:56

Jarrett also would probably make alot of money with all her real estate if Chicago had the Olympics. Don’t forget she is the one that hired Meeeshell to work in Daley’s office (that her fiancee barky HAD to meet before Meeshell was “allowed” to take the job)

Maybe Chicago was in the running for the top two spots…until O-meme and his wife showed up and gave their speeches. To sit there and listen to their yapping about themselves perhaps was a turnoff. And his blowing in like the wind for all of an hour perhaps didn’t sit right with the committee.

Earth to Barack, the Olympics has ALWAYS been about the games and the international community so it’s not relying on YOU to bring the world together and teach us all to sing in perfect harmony.

Comment by oowawa | 2009-10-04 12:46:05

Vince Offer (the Shamwow guy) would have had a better pitch for bringing the Olympics back to Chicago:

Rio? So what–you gotta few beaches with broken glass in the sand–a whole bunch of ragged kids begging for change and running around without shoes and who knows what parasites–forget about it–

Now Chicago–it’s a toddlin’ town–you know what I’m sayin’? Are you following me camera guy? And Sinatra tells me that you’re gonna have the time of your life and might even dance with your wife–or you might even get lucky, who knows? You’re gonna lose the blues, right here, right now, am I right? Chicago! Don’t it feel good just to say it? And I’ll tell you what–you’d better vote “Chicago” right now, vote now and vote often folks, cuz you know we can’t do this all day . . . “

The host city is well-chosen. Congratulations to Rio. Truly, they understand what it means to the athletes, our world to have such an event as the Olympics held in an area that appreciates all that it represents.

I guess Jarrett is going to post on Craiglist her prime real estate where the Olympic Village was going to be constructed. She had already met with HUD to make the taxpayers pay for the construction. Oh well…

I also heard the next summer Olympics will not be in the Western Hemisphere. Oh Well…

I’m just shocked they didn’t claim it was racism that lost the Olympics for Chicago. Come on Democrats, come one come all, you know you want to say it…or is it not politically wise?

Comment by ACPD | 2009-10-04 08:14:09

Did anyone happen to pick up on the cost of the this little junket? Flying Air Force One to Denmark cost over a million dollars. The First Lady’s plane cost over $300,000, and that doesn’t include the cargo and other planes that flew with them in support of “their presence.” This was a political trip we played for. BO promised the Chicago politicians he would bring the Olympics to Chicago, if he got elected. Well, he tried; but like so many of his promises, he has fallen short….No surprises there for me….

Exactly. Blacks only value their OWN kind. I’m white, an IU fan and my most favorite player of all time is A. J. Guyton (a Black guard). I guess, since I appose Obama’s policies, I’m a racist…

I know most people have heard of Isaiah Thomas (IU), he’s one of my favorites, too – but A. J. Guyton – in terms of skill, personality and humbleness – he STILL gets my vote over Isaiah.

I would love to see a major media outlet talk about Valerie Jarrett and her years working on the Olympic bid by investing in all the prime real estate that would be purchased and developed for the venues. Economic advisor? Maybe for her and Obama’s cronies’ economy. It was embarrassing to hear the campaign rhetoric again. I don’t think that Favre wrote those speeches. I think the Obama’s have decided they are quite able to speak for themselves. Oprah probably told them so. Speaking of Oprah…….

I’ve only been able to listen to Meeshelle’s pathetic speech for one minute. She looks like a cow, what’s with the big bow on the front of the dress? Is it too much to ask for the first lady of the US to conduct herself with dignity, instead of begging to have the Olympics because it would mean so much to her? Gross.

Comment by Margaret | 2009-10-04 09:18:02

Oh I listened to some more, oh no, her appeal that her Dad would want the games in Chicago wasn’t enough to sway the IOC huh? The Ego. It’s always all about The Ego.

As the president said just two weeks ago on the South Lawn of the White House, “I would make the case in Copenhagen personally, if I weren’t so firmly committed to making real the promise of quality, affordable health care for every American. But the good news is I’m sending a more compelling superstar to represent the city and country we love, and that is our First Lady, Michelle Obama.”

Within a week, that position was beginning to change as Mayor Daley pressed his case for a presidential pitch, which would put the country’s leader alongside his global counterparts. But according to White House officials, there were two factors even more important than the influence of Daley: the White House was already engaged, and the president himself liked the sporting challenge.

Now he is blaming it on the politics of the Olympic Committee. Gee whiz. Do you mean there is politics in these decisions? Now they are saying that Jarrett told him it would be just like the Iowa Caucuses. What she did not tell him however is how to cheat here as he did there. That was an oversight. Unfortunately, this is also symptomatic of how he presumes to govern the country domestically and internationally. The man is utterly oblivious to reality. The nicest thing you can say about him is that he is an over educated idiot, a dirty politician, and a dilettante. Evidently, he does not have the world is the palm of his hand, as the New York Times, CNN and NBC would have you believe.

I think BHO didn’t bring home the Olympics because the entire world has tired of seeing him on TV. They knew that by 2016 at the latest, he’ll be off the TV so there wasn’t a chance in hell they’d prolong the freak show. Thank goodness there is still some common sense in the world. My faith us restored a little.

Now, if the impeachment could begin, all my faith in humanity would be restored!

We could even let Barky announce it on TV, “Let the games shames begin!”

Danes explain why Obama failed
It comes down to respect.

President Obama showed none.

And in the end, the Olympics committee returned the favor by humiliating the president of the United States, according to stories in the Berlingske Tidende newspaper in Copenhagen. The Google translations are a tad rough, but serviceable.

The front page headline read: “Rio vandt — Obama tabte” or “Rio won — Obama lost.”

That story began: “The world’s most powerful man traveled to Copenhagen to ensure the Olympics to Chicago in 2016. But sensational smoke Americans out in the first round, while the IOC members did hosting the Rio de Janeiro.”

Kai Holm, a former Olympics committee member, told the newspaper (translated): “The fact that Barack Obama came, could not do it. I think we lacked emotion, it seemed too empty and business-like. So when Tony Blair promoted London he was around three days to lobby and talk to people. You can not just come with the train one day and try to affect everything. People have felt that it was a lack of respect for the Olympics and sport in general. I think people felt it was too business-like to get into the way we have now seen it many times, and you would have feelings back.”

Hans Bonde, professor of sport history at the University of Copenhagen, told the newspaper: “Here come the more favor Obama just before the deadline and made showoff. He clearly won the battle in the media, but it turned out indeed to be indifferent. IOC members did not feel important, and they were indeed reduced to spectators and not players. So if he had come, he would have had time for a personal lubricant.”

OK, that last word likely is a poor substitute for what the guy said. (UPDATE: A reader said buttering up is likely what is meant.)

Obama was the first president to make such a plea. But Obama showed dumb diplomacy. He was ill-prepared and his staff failed to lay the foundation for his appearance. He came off as an ugly American who knew nothing about the territory and who felt the world somehow owed him something.

Comment by ConfusedAmerican | 2009-10-04 14:29:00

There were several problems with Obama going over and asking for the Olympics.
But the one that bothered me the most was with Obama putting himself in the middle of the Chicago mix, did that mean he had plans of putting Federal Funds in the middle of the mix too.

Comment by Onofre's arm | 2009-10-04 15:09:09

The whole “Olympics in Chicago” was nothing but a giant money funnel that would direct billions of taxpayer dollars into the pockets of Obama’s pals and supporters back in Chi town. Of course federal funds would also be used. Then, as is usual, after the party is over, when his pals are off nursing their hangovers caused by wretched excess, the taxpayers will again be tapped to clean up the predictable mess left behind.

First time since Hillary won Texas BEFORE Acorn stole the caucus vote that I yelled OUT LOUD with joy.

Those chickens that the righteously racist and rampantly re-writing history Rev. Wright spoke of are coming home people…and crapping on the obamas and those who supported them and continue to support them in spite of overwhelming ipso facto evidence that if you support them you are a racist and/or a fool.

Pres. of Israel said it best when he told us all that we should be ashamed. I am, and I will continue to be until the Obama/Acorn/MSM/Wall Street fiasco is exposed, truth is told, convictions upheld, and Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton apologized to and put in her rightful position as the 44th President of the USA. Everything that has happened in the last two years should be written up in the history books as crimes against hermanity.
