What A Bunch Of Racist Hicks Here In South Cackalacky
By Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy on October 14, 2009 at 5:50 PM in Civil Rights Act of 1964, Congress (House & Senate), Current Affairs, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Race Card, Racism, South Carolina
At least according to my representative, Jim Clyburn. Let me just say that this is not at ALL what I had planned to write about this morning. I was going to write about the Senate Finance Committee voting on a bill that hasn’t even been written out yet, more a theoretical bill, if you will (thus, IMHO, dereliction of duty - how can you vote on a bill that is not written down???). And I was going to add in a video of Doug Elmendorf of the CBO testifying before the Senate that the CBO doesn’t KNOW how much money the Health Care Reform Bill wil cost in terms of taxes, debt, etc.
But then, my fellow NQ writer/friend, LisaB, alerted me to a story I missed in my own home town paper while I was out of town, which she found at Michell Malkin’s site. Now, you may recall that I have no love lost for this man who repeatedly stabbed the Clintons in the back before our primary last year, painting them as racists for stating actual facts (like that it takes a president to sign a bill into law - one would THINK a US Representative would be aware of that, but apparently, Rep. Clyburn does not know that). So, I was not at all surprised that he claimed in a recent Post and Courier article that Michelle Obama won’t come to SC because we’re all a bunch of racists and too hostile. Oh, how I wish I was making this up:
U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn said Friday that a conversation with White House staff left him with the sense that a hostile environment in South Carolina is keeping the first lady from visiting.
The high-ranking South Carolina Democrat said he has received more than 100 invitations for Michelle Obama. But this summer when he brought one of those requests to her staff on behalf of his alma mater, South Carolina State University, Clyburn said her security was an issue. The conversation came after former Richland County GOP activist Rusty DePass suggested on Facebook in June that an escaped zoo gorilla was not harmful because it was probably one of Mrs. Obama’s ancestors. DePass’ comment was coupled with a remark in July from U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican. DeMint said that beating the president’s health care plan would be a ‘Waterloo’ moment for Obama.
Congressman Joe Wilson’s ‘You lie!’ outburst during Obama’s joint address on health care reform last month didn’t help either, Clyburn said.
‘A lot of it has to do with the fact that the climate in South Carolina just is not good, and that’s a shame,’ Clyburn said at a roundtable discussion at his Columbia office.
‘I do believe it is keeping her away from this state,’ he said.
The congressman said the first lady’s family connections in South Carolina and her fond childhood memories from Georgetown County left many excited at the possibility that the Obamas would vacation on the coast here. Her security must be guaranteed before that could happen, Clyburn said.
DePass said Clyburn’s comments were off base.
‘The idea that people in South Carolina are hostile to the Obamas is poppycock,’ he said. ‘That’s utterly ridiculous.’
I concur. Just more race baiting from Rep. Clyburn. Oh, I am so proud that he speaks for me - NOT. But there’s more:
DePass apologized before the South Carolina Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for his Facebook comment, and reiterated that apologyFriday. He also said that his history with the Republican Party included reaching out to minority voters and trying to remove the Confederate battle flag from the Statehouse dome.
Wilson’s office also said Clyburn was wrong.
‘Congressman Wilson respectfully disagrees with Congressman Clyburn’s assumption,’ Wilson spokesman Ryan Murphy said in a statement. ‘He believes the people of South Carolina would welcome the president and the first lady should they decide to visit our great state.’
Neither the first lady’s press office nor the Secret Service provided comment for this story. DeMint’s office also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Pat Caddell of Hanahan, an expert on public opinion polls and a Democratic strategist, said South Carolina surely has racists among its residents, but racism isn’t the prevailing sentiment. ‘The Democratic Party will blow itself up if it keeps assigning things as racist,’ Caddell said. (Reach Yvonne Wenger at 803-926-7855 or ywenger@postandcourier.com.)
Sigh. I have to tell you, I am pretty damn sick and tired of being called a racist because I live in South Carolina for starters, but for any, ANY, questioning of President Obama’s policies (or lack thereof). For Rep. Clyburn to claim that the First Lady isn’t coming here, even though she has FAMILY here, because it’s “hostile” just makes me, well, “hostile!”
I had to read some of the comments at the end of the article to see what some of my fellow Palmetto State residents had to say. Three in particular caught my attention. The first is obviously in response to another comment:
treasured wrote:regulardude…Please give us a break!
Was Obama’s negative remarks about the US to other countries patriotic? You get respect when respect is earned.
Just because he is the President does not mean that we have to agree with him and like you, we can voice our opinions and our concerns.
There have been many concerns about this President and they have not just been from SC.You are just reading articles from a SC paper. What is the difference in your remarks accusing us of not respecting the President and you obviously not respecting your own state that you insist on living in?Must be something you like about it.
I have grown children and I have a young child. As it stands right now, they and their children will have to pay back for many years all the money that Obama has dished out in his so called stimulus plans.
Now, if you want to sing his praises, well and good, but don’t call the rest of us unpatriotic if we don’t agree with what he is doing. That is our right as Americans.
And this one:
caberchucker wrote:
Yeah, that makes sense that she’s “scared” of the hostility in SC. Oh wait, didn’t the Obamas and Oprah have to move their rally to USC’s stadium while campaigning, so they could accomidate all the people? Nevermind, I guess that never actually happened.
Uh yeah, evidently not.
And finally, this one, which I think really hits at the core of this charge by Rep. Clyburn:
wonderdog wrote:
Clyburn is embarrassed because he got snubbed by the Obamas, so he made up this nonsense to make it appear that it’s somebody’s fault. If he can get enough people to buy into that BS, maybe he can convince himself, too.
Now that the Obamas have no more use to them after he played his role as patsy during the campaign, why should they deign to do anything that might help him in some way? But yes, so much easier - for Rep. Clyburn, that is - to blame it on the very people who sent him to D.C. Nice, really nice. Can’t wait to see what he calls us next!

Oh, boo-hoo for Michelle Obama. And Clyburn? I lost all respect for the man when he viciously turned on the Clintons. Racists? The man ought to look in the mirror.
I’m a native northener, born to the Mid-Atlantic region, who happens to be living south of the Mason-Dixon line right now. Racism? Sorry. I haven’t seen it. What I have seen is deep concern of where this Administration is going. Is that to say racism doesn’t still exist? Absolutely not. But hello? It’s not the norm down here, despite what Clyburn and the Rev. Sharp, Rev. Wright and the Michelle Obama’s of the world would have you believe.
Criticism of lousy policy is “not” racism. Dissent is “not” racism [or treason]. Rejection of particular world views is “not” racism.
Michelle Obama has more to worry about from the fashion police [richly deserved, I might add] than she does from Southern racists.
Thanks for the article, Amy.
I agree with wonderdog, Clyburn is being snubbed by the Obamas but could it be that the Ivy Leagers don’t want to stoop to visit his little state school. Didn’t Sarah Palin go to state schools. I remember my entitlement friends making a big deal of that during the campaign.
I thought the second to the last sentence in your piece here sums up Obama&Co regarding anyone that got them into the White House. GLBT folks are learning that every day. A lot of people are learning this daily.
As for the rest, it doesn’t matter really whether the Obamas, or anyone who supports them, agrees or disagrees about whether racism plays a role in anything. The truth of the matter is that the topic is affective. It works and of course it infuriates the opposition at the same time. A double-whammy that is going to be used over and over again until our eyes bleed.
Excellent points abt those who helped get Obama where he is, and abt the use of the racism charge. Well said!
Great Comment, Peggy Sue! Spot on.
Verminme, yes, Clyburn just went to a little ol’ state school, SC State, which is a predominately African American institution. MANY people, of course, go to state schools (as did I - in NC, though), so the attack on Sarah Palin for doing so was just elitist and arrogant, IMHO.
jbjd, I missed that post - I was out out town then, and didn’t have computer access (I know - how did I survive??). Great post - in addition to the issues you raised, ACORN was also investigated here. You probably already know that Don Fowler had initially endorsed Hillary Clinton (he’s a superdelegate). Then, he basically told Hillary to toe the line and support Obama. I lost ALL respect for him the day he sent out that letter. Carol hasn’t been much better, and may be worse…
That really is the ticket — Clyburn wants to find an excuse for being snubbed. Why not play the race card again? Worked before. Let’s keep using it.
All this crying wolf has the effect of making people avert their eyes when there really is a racist incident to deal with. Mrs. Obama can’t be bothered because she can’t be bothered. There’s no percentage in it. That is why the Obamas are not visiting. It has nothing to do with security.
You are right, JayD. The GLBT community among others are finding out every day that this WH only looks forward, not back — that is, they look forward to the next group who can get them where they need to go. Everyone else is just as notch on the bedpost. Clyburn included.
Great article, Amy.
Thanks, Ani! And excellent observations on your part!
R3A, have you read any of my posts about the election fraud in SC? If Mr. Clyburn did not know what was going on, he should have. I only hope the SC AG, Mr. McMaster (R), who wants to be Governor, has the integrity to do his job, and investigate the more than 15 (fifteen) complaints of election fraud already filed in the Palmetto State.

The older I get, the prouder I become of my South Carolina roots. Hell, I even have relatives that fought in Hampton’s Legion. Joe Wilson made me believe again in the motto “Dum Spiro Spero”.
What a GREAT comment (the one in Latin), Khan Krum! Nice, very nice…
Wow, the Nobel Peace committee did make a big mistake, clearly Michelle deserved the prize even more than her husband did. Especially since they could have given him the one in economics. That way they both would have one. Which brings me to to the point, it must be hard living in Barack’s
shadowlight. She must know better than anybody else on the planet what a fraud “Thee One” really is. It must be tough when you have to imagine that everybody is jealous of your own awesomeness or your arms just in an attempt to get the same adulation your husband gets just from waking up each morning. The first couple are redefining narcissism. Someday when enough time goes by, psychologists will write papers just about these two. Until then, only the press is amazed by them. Save a few stupified bots… which are an endangered species right now.Oh, well said, Docelder!! Well said!
RRRA,
I can really understand your frustration and anger. I know very little about the politics of South Carolina, except that I am still angry at how the Clintons were treated there during the primary. I am so sick of the accusations of racism.
But, as my mother always said, try to look on the bright side of things. MEchelle is not visiting your state any time soon. I don’t know the real reasons, can only guess some of the same things mentioned by commentors in your post and in this thread.
Breathe deeply. Your air will be free for a while of the stench of her majesty.
ahhhhhh the sweet sound of clyburn whining!
LOL - indeed. That seems to have become his forte, wouldn’t you say?
Diana L.C., EXCELLENT point!! Thanks!
What I have always wondered about is how Clyburn became the whip. Nancy did this for some reason and it wasn’t apparent at the time, prior to the primaries.
Perhaps she knew he would keep the Dems in line out of fear of being called racist. They even called the BlueDogs racists…
Go figure.
Michelle won’t visit S.C.? How lucky can you get!
My thought exactly. Hope that luck extends to CA. We might get away with it due to our high unemployment. I’m sure they don’t want to hear what we really think. Also, Californians didn’t lose thier collective minds until the GE; Hillary won the Democrat Primary here.
Clyburn’s playing the race card to cover up his own rejection by Mr. and Mrs. Messiah.
And, wouldn’t that be JUST LIKE THEM? Tossing their biggest supporters under the bus, one after another? It’s still a “campaign” in this administration; they don’t know the meaning of the word “governance.”
After all, The Messiahs are going to LOUISIANA. And, remember Michelle’s loving little speech about how she loved South Carolina, because she has FAMILY there?
Oh, I feel sorry for you, RRRAmy. They’re not coming for a visit any time soon. More’s the pity. Heh.
You reap what you sow.
Calling an entire state racist IS RACIST.
True that - it surely is. I guess he forgets that people in this state actually ELECTED him. Ahem.
But good points abt how lucky I am!
Oh, and Diana L.C., now I have the song from “Life Of Brian” stuck in my head! You know, this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlBiLNN1NhQ
RRRAmy, As you probably have gathered, I get very riled up about Clyburn. Watchdog is spot on about Clyburn feeling snubbed by His and Her Highness and the reason for Clyburn’s manipulative rhetoric about the dangers of either of them coming to her home state. That is absurd! But I can see why he is no doubt very upset by it and why he is using misplaced anger.
I’m not sure I understand your description of Clyburn as 0’s “Patsy”. Clyburn’s role for the 2008 election cycle was far more than merely “Patsy” status for 0bama. He was a primary architect for 0’s eventual success. The 0 campaign did not direct Clyburn. Clyburn did the directing. Without James Clyburn’s dirty work, Hillary would be POTUS. There was NO ONE more sinister, more corrupt, more divisive than Clyburn. Every move he made was racially motivated:
1) He convinced the DNC to move SC’s primary so that instead of being in the summer it would be the 3rd contest after Iowa, NH & NV in January. Remember Michigan & Florida? His reasoning was SC has a high AA voter registry - 50-60% of voters are AA. He said AA’s needed to have an early voice in the nominating process. The DNC lapped this up and couldn’t say yes fast enough.
Make no mistake about it, this had everything to do with 0bama’s candidacy and Clyburn was determined to activate that base to the nth degree. He further convinced the DNC to hold the primary the week of January 21st - MLK’s birthday week.
2) Clyburn also asked for and readily got one of the debates - booked for MLK’s birthday, Mon.Jan. 21st. The day began with a march to the SC Capitol in Columbia in which the candidates participated - that is, all but The One it was all planned around. His Highness couldn’t make it and those were the days that 0bama made it look like he was *post* racial. Hillary, John Edwards and others marched and made rousing MLK speeches, as if that would matter.
3) The debate was one of the more contentious ones. I tried to get tickets as soon as it was announced. None were available. Clyburn was in charge of the tickets. The audience was basically AA.
4) The race-baiting started in SC when Clyburn rushed to the first microphone available with the out-of-context fairy tale statement; then Clinton’s Jesse Jackson remarks were twisted into racism. Donna Brazile picked up the race card for CNN’s coverage that evening, appearing to be on the edge of tears, and expressing grave dismay over “President Clinton’s remarks”. Race had already been used in Iowa and NH. Clyburn piously said he was uncommitted, but if Bill Clinton did not stop his racial comments, he would endorse “a” candidate. He would say this several times that week.
5) Clyburn got Teddy Kennedy swept up as well. Kennedy called Clinton to warn him that he was going to announce for 0bama if Bill did not stop. The fix was already in, however, because that decision was made early on. Bill Clinton plead with Kennedy not to do it, but the Monday following the SC primary, the Kennedys and Oprah held a rally to announce their endorsement of 0bama which many considered a fatal blow to Hillary’s campaign.
6) 0bama won the SC primary with 91% AA voter support. White voters hardly participated. All the activating was done in the AA communities. Although that vote was skewed and not representative, it was reported by the nat’l media as if it were representative. Just as Clyburn planned, AAs nationwide (conservatives, the well-educated, the professionals as well as the poor and uneducated) began to jump on the 0bama train, finally convinced he had a real chance while all of it had been carefully manipulated and racially contrived.
Clyburn has every right to be furious with the 0bamas, but instead he blames the citizens of SC calling them racist when he is the one. His feelings are more about not being rewarded for anything he did which was indeed significant. 0bama should be falling at his feet. Instead Clyburn is still the House Majority Whip, the highest ranking AA congress person and attends WH meetings as before. Nothing more. I think he is already under the bus. It serves him right!
Fran, you raise a good point. Yes, Clyburn was more like Sir Guy of Gisborne to the Sheriff of Nottingham than a patsy, I suppose. That is, doing all the dirty work and laying the ground work for taking down the “good guy” with any nefarious means available.
Thank you so much for listing out all Clyburn did here in our state. Those of us who live here know it, but those who don’t live here probably have no idea the lengths to which he went to discredit Hillary Clinton (and Bill), and to smooth the path for The One with all you listed.
Of particular interest is his moving up the Primary - and ALL of our delegates counted even though we were way early in violation of the rules. Funny how that happens, huh?
RRRAmy, Since the DNC approved of the SC Primary being frontloaded into the primary schedule, at least the DNC did not consider the rules had been violated. There was at least one other state that got DNC approval to change their date.
I just today ran into this little tidbit: On March 23, 2009, VA Gov Tim Kaine and 0bama appointed DNC Chairman, announced a 37 member Democratic Change Commission which will recommend changes to the Dem Party’s rules for the 2012 presidential nominating and delegate selection process. Then the bombshell - Guess who Gov Kaine named as Co-Chairs of the Change Commission! SC REP. JAMES CLYBURN AND MISSOURI SENATOR CLAIRE MCCASKILL!!
This was horrifying news. That is like making a bank robber in charge of guarding the safe.

Wait, I thought they loved SC? What a lucky state–you won’t ever have MO invading your territory.
I’m just shocked that Clyburn would reveal that Michelle is AFRAID to visit South Carolina. First of all it demonstrates that Clyburn has no loyalty or respect for the people of his State in that he would even reveal that info, if it is indeed the truth.
And My GOD, Michelle has an army of secret service around her, every minute of every day, not to mention she travels in bullet/bomb proof limos and she’s afraid of, WHAT, exactly? She has more guarantee of safety, no matter where she is, than any other woman on the planet. Buck up Michelle, go to South Carolina and press some flesh with the southern commoners.
Right after she gets back from visiting school children in Kentucky I guess… which is never. The Obama’s don’t do things for others… they do them for themselves. Nothing for the Obama’s in visiting S.C. right now, but maybe something in feigning an inability to do so. Michelle is such the martyr, she should risk it all and go to S.C. just to show the little people how magnanimous she is. Not.
Yeah, I can’t imagine why Michelle Obama would be leery of South Carolina, after the GOP state party chair called her a monkey. What is her problem, anyway?
Read the piece again - it was the Richland County GOP chair, not the chair for the entire state. What he said was reprehensible, no doubt abt it. But he does not speak for the whole state. Hell, he doesn’t speak for the State GOP. But nice try attempting to conflate the two.
Well, am I safe in assuming he won’t call you a campaign donor? LOL!
This is a bitter-hearted old man, who refuses to acknowledge that race has not stopped him from achieving a degree of success. He will carry his grievances to the grave, and then refuse to wear a white robe!
ROTFLMAO - uh, yeah, you could say that! I lost all respect for him not only for his repeated backstabbing and race baiting of the Clintons, but the rampant nepotism he engages in here in the CHarleston area. Oh, his family has done QUITE well since he got into office. Sheesh.
And yes, AnonOMouse, it says a whole lot abt Clyburn that he would demean the very people who elected him. Both you and DocElder have it right…
Like most people here Clyburn lost me during the primaries when he went after the Clintons.
I have to admit I’ve been LMAO when I read this statement at the beginning of your article:
You know what I’m going to say…c’mon…how can you award the Nobel Peace Prize to a man that has done nothing to deserve it? Hahahaha!
Great article as always Amy!
I guess, then, she won’t want to visit us in PA. After all , we’re just a bunch of gun-slinging Annie Oakleys with bibles under our arms! I personally hope she stays away from here.
NO I think the Obama’s are better of visiting one of the other states that we have…ya 51,52,53,54,55,56 and what was the 57th state?
I know the one state has a state motto of, “The Idea of Obama”.
ROTFLMAO - both of y’all - good ones!
