No Bunk: Palin Puts Obama To Shame

(bumped up from earlier Tuesday)

palin-rockReprinted from More.com with the express permission of Amy Siskind, founder of The New Agenda.

………………………………………..

As a onetime point guard, the thrilla from Wasilla inspires girls to join the team. Obama doesn’t…though the story of his poker-playing in Illinois proves he knows how important behind-the-scenes bonding can be

This past weekend, President Obama included White House aide Melody Barnes in his golfing foursome. News? For this president, yes.

Up until that golf game, Obama had not included a single woman in White House staff activities such as basketball, fishing and golf. So why now invite a female staffer? Because this week the media started to question whether Obama had essentially created a fraternity house at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The media glare came after yet another high-level all-male basketball game earlier this month. When MSNBC’s Savannah Guthrie asked Obama if these all-male games were sexist, Obama responded: “I think this is bunk."

By which I believe he meant, B.S. Meant that inclusion of women at this kind of level is not a goal worth considering. Meant that despite Title IX being passed three decades ago to give girls equal access to sports, our president, leader of the free world, just wants to hang with the guys. When he added, "I don’t think it sends any kind of message or signal whatsoever," he was implying that sports equality doesn’t matter, as a symbol or as a reality.

As the coach of a teen girls’ basketball team, this story made me cringe.  We mothers work so hard to teach our daughters that they can be whatever they want to be.  Courtesy of Title IX, my daughter grew up watching the WNBA and believing that someday she will become a professional basketball player.

When Sarah Palin entered the national political scene as John McCain’s V.P. candidate, my daughter read that the Alaskan had played point guard on her state-champion high school team.  My daughter, who plays point guard on her seventh-grade travel team, proudly cut out a picture of Palin and put it on her locker with the comment,  "Palin, You Rock My World!"

The importance of role models. Ugh, yes, role models.  The message my daughter got from point-guard Palin was: My possibilities include the chance of running the world. And here’s the message all our daughters are getting from watching Obama play hoops with the guys: It’s still a man’s world. You might get chosen for the Cabinet (25 percent of Obama’s Cabinet picks are women) or as one of the czars (though fewer than 10 percent are women).  But even if you sit at the table, you’ll still be an Obama outsider if you can’t dunk the ball.

Despite Obama’s attempted dismissal of the sexism charge as "bunk," his own actions show that he knows the power of behind-the-scenes bonding. As a freshman state senator back in Illinois, Obama helped form a weekly poker game in Springfield, and not just for the fun of it. According to a February ‘08 New Yorker story: "And, like Teddy Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson, Senator Obama seems to have played the game at least partly because it enabled him to form political alliances that he might not otherwise have formed." Or as the president himself told the AP six months earlier: "In Springfield, it was a way to get to know other senators, including Republicans."

So why, Mr. President, do you assume that women do not need these political alliances? Is it that the White House is a man’s world (a question that yesterday’s New York Times explored on page one)? Or is it simply that you are uncomfortable around women?

American women should expect more from our president. And maybe here is a lesson learned: In the end, women cannot keep relying on men’s willingness to include them. It’s time to elect a woman president.  With 2012 just around the corner, it’s time to find a franchise player of our own.

wow, is this stupid. title IX (and everything related) isn’t about allowing women/girls play on the same teams and in the same games as men/boys. it’s about equal access to their own athletic activities. men and women have single-sex pickup games all over the country every day.

Comment by Animal Control | 2009-10-27 14:07:08

It’s a metaphorical post. Who’s stupid!

Comment by mountainaires | 2009-10-28 09:57:43

I don’t think the Rutger’s Women’s Basketball Team would think it’s “metaphorical” or “stupid.”

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/12/national/main2675273.shtml

It’s a serious, salient and direct argument about the President of the United States acting like an adolescent male.

Frankly, this issue goes beyond the question of equal access; it also goes to a President whose level emotional development is seriously in question. He PLAYS more than he WORKS. He’s a shallow man, an empty suit, a poseur.

Other’s do the work; Barry Obama likes to PLAY. But like other adolescent males, he likes to compete against other adolescent males, and reserve his relationships with women to comments like “that’s my cell-phone in my pocket ringing, I’m not getting fresh with you.”

Barack Obama, adolescent male, doesn’t know how to relate to women in an emotionally mature way.

Adolescent males, or adult men whose emotional development is at the level of an adolescent male, are afraid to be beaten by a woman, you know?

I guess you’re too young to remember when girls in high school were trying out for football and baseball teams with their male counterparts instead of opting for the unknown female teams. Yes, girls are legally allowed through Title IX to try out and play on the same teams.

Annika Sorenstam also made her way in the men’s PGA.

Comment by abycat | 2009-10-28 01:22:05

Nancy Lopez was the woman golfer responsible for Title IX in the first place. She had to sue my high school to compete on the men’s golf team because there was not even a women’s team. She was the best high school golfer (men and women) in the State of New Mexico and kicked ass.

Work related sports are not at all the same as a pickup game between you and your homeys. Workplace sporting events allow you gain face time with the boss in a faux-casual environment. In fact, we had such issues with ours at work (I am the boss) that I stopped having them because I found there was honestly no “fair” way to do it.

Bugger off now. Thanks.

Just a clue for you and the FF, PrimeO and the ilk, generalizations, tho yours (by post), are really repeating someone else’s idea’s and opinions. Formulating your ideas, making an honest attempt to relate, not conflate, lie, insult or claim blanket opinions as truth, may garner more real interaction on a blog if that is what you desire.
Hit and run statements meant to irritate, not engage are why people are called trolls; we all are entitled to opinions my all means, but it would be a miracle to see a little intellectual finesse instead of generalizations, when excercizing our free speech.

Wow are you stupid, crk. While Title IX was about equal access and funding for women’s sports, you also mention “and everything related.” You mean “related” as in Title VII which prohibits discrimination based on gender as well as other factors and that could get a business sued for the type of behavior this WH is engaged in - specifically excluding women from the ability to engage in activies where access and networking occurs.

Or do you mean “related” as in all the other case law and current business practices which force men who are afraid to fairly compete with women on the same field for fear of losing embarassingly to actually compete. A category in which Obama clearly falls in light of the handholding and cheating he encouraged the DNC to engage in to force his DNC nomination on us. After all, it wouldn’t do for him to lose in a pick-up game to a team that had, say, Kathleen SEbelius on it who played champion-level basketball in college. And, having seen the paunches on the congressmen who played this month in Obama’s little frathouse baseketball game, I have a suspicion that Sebelius - probably Lisa Jackson, heck maybe even Christina Romer too - could run rings around those guys.

Comment by hokma | 2009-10-27 14:14:12

I am just wondering when is everyone here going to start calling for Congressman Alan (dis)Grayson’s immediate resignation. (dis)Grayson said this in a radio interview:

“Here I am the only member of Congress who actually worked as an economist, and this lobbyist, this K Street whore, is trying to teach me about economics,” he said.

That was a direct reference to senior Federal Reserve advisor Linda Robertson.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9BJIANG0&show_article=1

Does (dis)Grayson understand the word P-I-G inclduing the way he looks?

Comment by Rabble Rouser Revrend Amy | 2009-10-27 14:44:02

Thanks for that link, Hokma - I think. That was truly disturbing, though I suppose I should be used to it after this last campaign. Sounds like Grayson will feel right at home with all of the other Dems who trashed Hillary and Sarah.

If Obama truly does not get that there is a power dynamic involved for those who get to play the game, be it hoops, or golf, or even poker, then he is naive beyond belief.

But we know he does get it - hell, he participated in a whole lot of sexism himself. He simply refuses to accept women as equal. How else to explain such an incredibly inexperienced, unqualified man thinking he is better than someone like Hillary with her far superior experience and expertise?

I might add, he can stop treating the US Presidency like his own personal country club any damn time now, and GET TO WORK, already. Enough hoops, golf, etc.

Btw - why aren’t the big news sources exposing how much time he is playing instead of working?? If he, in 9 months time, matches the same number of games as Bush in 34 months time, doesn’t that seem like something that is NEWSWORTHY???

Comment by hokma | 2009-10-27 14:56:01

You are so right.
I would not be surprised if Obama’s goal was to spend these four years by seeing as much of the world as he can for free (although no mileage points), playing golf for free, playing basketball whenever he wants with former Dookie Reggie Love for free, go to the finest restaurants and Broadway shows for free, have parties and personal celebrity concerts for free. And then after those four years get a fully funded retirement pension along with personal security for life.

You show me any other gig that you can spend only four years in and get all those benefits. I dare you!

The only downside is that he will be mocked as the most failed President in history which I am sure will not bother him as he writes (or someone else writes) more books after he is deposed.

As Soros’ puppet, Obama is treating this as a boondogle.

Comment by helenk | 2009-10-27 15:40:16

as I said before “if he wanted to see the world, why didn’t he join the Navy? It would have been better and cheaper for this country.”

He really has no reported history of doing any work . Pushing a button marked Present does not seem like work to me.
No meetings on Afghanistan when he had the title of chairman of the subcommittee is par for the course for him.
Even in college get the title and publish nothing.
I keep wondering when the dems and the obots will decide that the his load is too heavy to carry.
This ” he ain’t heavy he’s my brother” can only work for so long.

Am I the only one that thinks all this whining is anti-feminist? So a female banking lobbyist should not be called a whore? Are we going to pretend like we don’t know what a K Street Whore means? There was a time when a feminist would argue that the term be applied to the suit-and-tie professions and that prostitution was no different than many other degrading professions that were male dominated.

To the author/basketball coach:

Don’t you cherish your ability to teach your team and give them a playing field where they can compete and develop? Are we going to pretend like the WNBA is on par with the NBA talent? Women’s leagues protect women from being crowded out of sports because: (get ready to be outraged) men are physically stronger than women.

Grown men wanting to play a competitive game of basketball in THEIR FREE TIME should be protected by COMMON SENSE before our society gets so loony that we need Federal protection for men to be allowed to be men. Don’t worry, we are still ashamed at our testosterone and our history of uncivilized barbarism, but we don’t want you to cry when we give you a ‘bow to the face and dunk on you!!! I have a feeling that’s the blog we’d be reading if Hillary had broken her elbow on the court on an Obama to Geitner pick and roll.

Women can play golf along side men. It’s not like the Bozo and his frat pals are pro golfers.

Women can also play softball along side men. Many companies have inter-divisions softball games.

My husband used to play in a co-ed indoor hockey league after work.

A female colleague of mine played in a co-ed soccer league.

There is no excuse for Bozo. Women are such after thoughts to him.

“I think this is bunk.”

That pretty much sums up the response of the Democratic Party last year when anyone had the audacity to complain about the rampant sexism that marked and marred the primaries and GE.

That’s bunk. You’re crazy. Stop whining. You’re being a Drama Queen.

Really?

Well, this crazy, whining Drama Queen has had it with the brush offs, the excuses, the threats, the foul labels and every other manner of disrespect.

Is it time to have a woman in the White House? Without doubt. But I want it to be the right woman because whoever it may be, her successes or failures, will have a huge and lasting effect for all women.

Sarah Palin is not the only contender out there. I’m willing to look and listen to them all. I had my choice for 2008 in Hillary Clinton until the Dems decided to chew her up and spit her out. Fools!

So now? I’ll look at the Republican women. I’ll look at third party candidates. As for the Dems? They can stuff it.

Here’s another “whiny woman” who gets just a tad annoyed when some supercilious man decides that he has the right to tell me what I can and cannot be upset about. All that’s missing is the pat on the head and the “there, there” rhetoric.

As numerous people have tried, and obviously failed to get into some thick skulls is that this isn’t about playing in the NBA, home of giants that most men couldn’t possibly compete with, it’s about access. I know it’s a difficult concept for some of you poor little guys to get into your head. Try harder.

And if the boyz wanted to exclude Kathleen Sebelius from their game of hoops, it probably was because she actually did play basketball on her college team, and they were probably worried she would show them up. Male egos being such fragile things.

Here’s what Sebelius had to say about her vs Oblahblah in a game of horse.

Well, it seems Barry is telling us that he just used those as a means to get where he wanted to go and now that he’s got the position he sold himself for, he no longer needs to put up with them and to him that was the only forming alliances he wanted.

Next thing we’re going to hear out of his shallow mouth? …”this is hard work”…or…”it sure would be easier to have a dictatorship”. He’s already surpassed Cheerleading, partying and campaigning skills from his predecessor. At least Bush didn’t stick the women or blacks or hispanics on a card or on a stick to wave like Barry his shallowness does (because it’s all for show).

Comment by ImaLlindatoo | 2009-10-27 16:09:58

AND…get this. This is how Sarah Palin started her facebook entry yesterday, 12 hours ago.

East Coast Races Impact All AmericansShare

As I stand here in a high school gymnasium watching freshmen girls’ basketball games, I’m struck by the sight of America’s future right in front of me - these tenacious young women full of energy and intensity. I want them to realize every opportunity this great, free nation can provide.

There are big political races on the East Coast that are coming down to the wire - the results of which will impact policies and political actions that touch all of us in every state. Like other independent Americans, I don’t always see eye-to-eye with Republican political committees, so when I tell you that the Republican Governors Association has my complete support and confidence in its campaign efforts back East, know that I really mean it. The RGA is helping lead the conservative comeback beginning this year, and its involvement in the East Coast races is significant. I hope you’ll support these efforts, which are vital to the cause for America’s freedom and prosperity: http://www.rga.org/initiatives/comeback-fund/.

Let’s consider the governor’s race in New Jersey. The state has the highest tax burden in the country and the incumbent Democrat governor has only added to the economic burden. He eliminated property tax rebates for middle class homeowners while the sales tax increased. Altogether, taxes on the people in the region have increased by billions of dollars. It’s no surprise that New Jersey has the highest unemployment rate in the region! Thankfully, there is an alternative. Residents there will be better off under an administration that understands the benefits that result when workers are allowed to keep more of what they earn. Watch New Jersey’s economy come alive under new leadership that will put government back on the side of the people! Chris Christie promises this new leadership.

http://tinyurl.com/yzbtvtd

Comment by ImaLlindatoo | 2009-10-27 16:15:03

and ended with

Americans who believe in smaller government and free enterprise have a chance to show Washington that people all across the U.S. don’t want an ever-increasing national debt, more dependency on foreign energy sources, and more wasteful government spending. If, like me, this is what you want to show Washington, then I hope you’ll support Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell and the RGA, as great efforts are put forth in these East Coast races.

The young student athletes I’m watching right now are counting on us to do the right thing - to fight for what is right for America today and into their future. Electing candidates with common sense and respect for freedom is one way we can fight for what is right.

I don’t really care which of them could beat the other in a game of one on one basketball. But, I wouldn’t bet against Palin. The thing about Palin is she is a real person and not a brand. Doc you nailed it. Swoosh. Nothing but net. Obama is packaged and branded by Axelrod so that his true beliefs (Left-wing, Marxist, pick your description) were vacuum sealed. That’s why he’s always stumbling, trying to remember the words Axelrod put on the front and back of the box. Only now a lot of people are seeing a bunch of zeros where the nutritional information is supposed to be.

As for Palin, there were two things on her resume that told me a lot about her. One is she walked away from that high paying oil commission job when she encountered corruption and then nuked her own party over it. That took guts. Second, and you may laugh at this, but the fact that she was a point guard on a championship team tells me a lot about her leadership potential. Point guards lead their teams. The set up the plays, the pass the ball. They decide and delegate. She’s been doing it in one venue after another for many years now. She’s a leader.

I’m a long-time Democrat so I understand if you don’t like her politics. You can even argue her resume is too thin. But right now we have someone in the White House whose resume is even thinner. Worse yet, he has no record of leading anything before or after January 20th of this year.

Oh yeah, about resigning from her job in governor. The Democrats had her trapped, filing bogus ethics charges. Palin had seen this before…on the basketball court when the other team sets up a “trap defense,” basically double-teaming the person with the basketball. You can bet Palin knows how to elude the trap on the basketball court and by breaking clear of the Democrats’ trap in Alaska, she showed she still has the moves and the instincts.

Donjo you seem to have a private schizophrenic lexicon and grammar book, because in normal usage, there is no connection between “completely bat-shit crazy” and Sarah Palin, an intelligent, practical, and eminently sane woman. Perhaps you’re tracing meanings back to the Anglo Sexon, or even Early Muddle English.

Sarah Palin is batshit crazy? You Obamatrons better turn down the volume or that could be who you’re staring at very shortly. Or maybe, that’s the game plan. You ignorant putz. Your idolidle, That One creates fissures in the language each and every time he attempts to speak without TOTUS front and center. At least Shrub’s malaprops were funny. Your dud’s are just banal and stilted. He acts as though he has command of the English language but speaks as though he’s just picked up a dictionary and is making a failed attempt at learning the appropriate words. If you buy into the Oblahblah is a fine orator, then you’re no expert on English and s t u p i d, to boot.

You want to learn how the language is really spoken–try Lincoln, Shakespeare, Lord Russell, or Winston Churchill. Your William Jennings Bryan wannabe is just pedestrian.

Now go play in the street where you belong.

Comment by Lana | 2009-10-27 22:59:33

Wouldn’t you know that FF watches Behar? Hahahaha, what a funny little bot he/she is…thinking Joy Behar has anything to say that isn’t right out of the Dims propaganda book. She’s an ignorant New Yawker; provincial and narrow minded, thinks NY is simply where it’s at. Same as Bawbawa, Whoops and whatshername, Sherrie. It’s a mystery as to why Elizabeth stays on that lame show. My God, I haven’t watched that piece of tee vee vomit for years.

Anyway, up in Alaska it is referred to as “Moooseshit”; not to be confused with “turd blossom”.

Still, I would wager you that Palin would kick BO’s crap up and down the court. That would be a game of charity that I would pay to watch.

Apparently it’s golf that counts for running for president, donjo. Your dear leader Obama has out done Bush on that account.

Tell us, when, exactly, does he plan on going to work and being president?

He’s had nearly a year of OJT and he’s still pretending he needs a 90 day evaluation to man-up to the job.

The GOP haven’t put their hope in Palin. But, you gotta admit she’s looking like a better choice than Obama day by day.

He has to go on TV to whine his case to the public. She posts on Facebook and shuts down pieces of legislation - death panels, anyone? - and flushes the dems out of their hidey-holes spitting and stumbling all over themselves.

Comment by Joe | 2009-10-27 17:29:03

physical fitness is important. some of you sound so bored that you are going crazy. maybe try going outside once in a while.

the more stressful your life is, the more important staying active becomes.

everyone should do it and no one should be ridiculed for it, especially in this nation of manatees.

Because IMHO Palin is bat-shit crazy makes me an Obamatron? Give me a break, as I’m one of the original 0 “haters.” Can’t stand him. Can’t stand Palin, either, as they both seem to suffer deeply from a Messianic complex. (I guess that’s normal when they stand in front of fainting, screaming, adoring crowds.) I suggest you go here:

While I do not agree with all of Gov. Palin’s positions, I do agree that she is as just about as real as they come. I like her as a non-politician and will follow her closely the next couple of years. I’m not entirely sure of her at this point with respect to national office, but it certainly won’t hurt me to give that remarkable woman and her positions a further review.

I agree, Ferd. And Lady D. I have not closed my mind. I’m willing to listen and watch and read Palin. My instinct tells me she’s simply not ready, particularly for 2012.

But, and I said this before, personality-wise, I like Sarah Palin. I absolutely admire her grit and her refusal to back down. But she needs more than the sheer force of her personality to recommend her for POTUS.

Newt Gingrich was asked last night about the Republican disagreement on who to support in an open seat in upstate NY. Seems that Palin joined Pawlenty and others in endorsing Hoffman who is an Independent, not a Republican and does not live in the District. Rationale: pro-life. The Republican candidate who does live in the District and was selected in a party process that involved apparently 4 different local Republican selection committees is being endorsed by Gingrich. His position is that the Republicans have to make room in the party for Republicans who have moderate views on social issues and they need to support local Republican choices/decisions.

That makes sense to me. I hope Sarah’s decision on Hoffman has more to it and does not take her in a wrong direction. I like her and I would like to see her help to reshape the Republican party and return it to some of its historical high notes seen with people like Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower—but not Reagan.

Sarah Palin does rock! She seems to have the same type of “political instincts” that Bill and Hillary Clinton have. When John McCain put her on the ticket, she was a major reason that I supported the republican ticket. I like Sarah and I think some day she could make a fine presidential candidate.
I don’t put much stock in the critics of Palin. They supported Obama. They told us he was brilliant and possibly the smartest man to be in the White House. That’s turned out to be a “crock of you know what”. As for Joy Behar, who cares what she thinks about anything? I rarely watch “The View” because I don’t find it very entertaining and Joy Behar strikes me as just another over-paid, not very funny television personality.

Comment by donjo | 2009-10-28 00:30:52

My point is that not everyone on this site or in this country has over-imbibed on Palin Kool Aid.

I’ve noticed that it’s OK to make complete sh** of 0 here (even I do it), but it’s not OK to do the same of Palin? Do I detect a double standard? On one hand, people will scream “racist” and the other, “misogynist.” Neither one, in most cases, is probably true.

Comment by Katmoon | 2009-10-28 09:12:05

No double standard, when is it enough savaging of the female candidates? What is your limit? I mean didn’t you hit your limit of Palin hate when trig, an innocent became a political joke? or say the CU*T t-shirts by o supporters? Just curious. Simply, most here got tired of how the dems and particularly the one, had no problem showing themselves in public with knuckles dragging, when speaking of, about, or to women, filthy gestures, and names included.
Why aren’t you as concerned with this double standard, as with oh, say for instance screaming r a c i s m for not liking this presidents policies and how they are presented? There is your double standard; which is being allowed as well as the outrageous behavior toward female candidates. It is one thing to disagree, and quite another to go after children and to refer on t-shirts to a candidate in gutter language. At least we do not call the one, the truely offensive terms we know are not representative of our dislike, unlike what we have been labeled, the presidents tone of skin has nothing to do with it, it is his tone of voice and choice of language.

It’s totally amazing that people, who are probably pretty smart, can read INTO a post what they want or expect to see. I could be wrong, but I’m guessing it’s some form of psychological blindess. Sort of like an umpire or referee calling an “out” or “foul,” not because of what they just saw, but because that’s what they expected to see.

Because I, like thousands of others, had the temerity to question the goddess, SarA Palin, I’m accused of being: dumb, a woman hater, a fool, an OBOT (the worst accusation of all), a spreader of vicious rumors about Palin’s kids, and probably other things I’ve missed.

The women weren’t invited because the guys are afraid the women will show them up. For all the chest-thumping, their egos are so fragile. Saw this up close in many a pickup game whenever a woman showed up to play. Since I was the oldest and worst of the male players, the other guys would say, “you cover the girl.” Fine with me. It’s just a game. It’s not going to bruise my ego if the “girl” drives by me. Inevitably, the women who showed up to play were technically more proficient, better shooters, better passers and they didn’t hog the ball. After trying to defend one of them, I asked, “So where are you playing on scholarship?” North Carolina was the answer. On another occasion, it turns out the “girl” I was “coverIng” was tuning up for her next WNBA game. So, you see why the other guys (those who mistakenly thought they still had game) didn’t want “girls” on the court. Tooooo risky. ha ha ha.

I think we should definitely give President Obama another Nobel Peace Prize for his incredible sacrifices for women’s rights. At great personal risk, undaunted by the threat of girl cooties, he actually took a woman golfing. Women across the world celebrate his brave and bold action.

If you want an example of this principle at work, just look at any major law or accounting or other similar firm in any large city. Do they have softball teams? Yes. Would they EVER restrict the team to men only?

They would be absent an appendage if they did.

But, more important — they wouldn’t ever think of it.

But, they also don’t blow off female reporters with “sweetie” comments.

I agree with Amy’s concerns about Obama. I also have to admire anyone who went up the ladder, starting at the bottom, as Sarah Palin did. Her path is the stuff powerful female role models are made of.

Having said that, I really wish there were more women role models who are more progressive–like Hillary, of course. Her more recent comments about retiring at some point begin to take her out of the role model category. (What young woman wants to follow someone whose retirement may be on the horizon?)
