Fall Classic – Game 2 – Phillies v. Yankees

On the strength of an impressive outing by pitcher Cliff Lee, who threw a complete game, and Chase Utley’s hitting, the Phillies took Game 1 of the World Series 6-1 in their drive for back to back World Series championships. It was a masterful performance by Lee, even if his cocky fielding aggravated more than a few Yankees’ fans. Still, there is no denying he pitched a fantastic game with sufficient offensive support to get him the win. Phillies fans should be thrilled.

CC Sabathia made two mistakes last night – and Chase Utley made him pay for them with two home runs. That was all the Phillies needed last night. The one run the Yankees scored late in the game came on an error, thus does not affect Lee’s ERA.

As for the Yankees, Sabathia kept the game close, but the bullpen continued to dismay Yankee fans. They gave up 4 runs in just 2 innings after Sabatia gave up 2 in 7 innings. Girardi’s choice of relievers continued to puzzle the Yankee faithful, as did his decision to keep the outfielder, Nick Swisher, in the lineup. Swisher’s abysmal hitting has hurt the Yankees throughout the post season (Texeira has also suffered at the plate, but his stellar defense makes his presence on the field critical). The one bright spot for the Yankees was Derek Jeter, who had 3 of the Yankees’ 6 hits.

All in all, a great win for Philly. Still, the umpires managed to get several plays wrong, not to mention the variable strike zone of home plate umpire, Gerry Davis, for both teams. As I always say, I don’t care what the umpire decides is the strike zone is as long as it is consistent for both teams. But when it changes from inning to inning, sometimes pitch to pitch, it makes it hard on both the pitcher and the batter – no one knows what a pitch will be called (and this is not the first time Gerry Davis has had difficulty with consistency). Hopefully, tonight’s game will be free of questionable calls.

And speaking of tonight’s game, once again, it is at 7:57 p.m., again on Fox. The game pits Phillies pitcher Pedro “The Yankees Are My Daddy” Martinez (Regular season 5-1, 3.63 ERA; Post season 0-0, 0 ERA)) against A.J. Burnett (Regular season 13-9, 4.04 ERA; Post season 0-0, 4.42 ERA).

Yankees fans love to razz Pedro Martinez for his infamous statement, made all the worse for him since it came while he was a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Calling the Yankees his “daddy” was a high compliment, of course, but also a pretty funny thing to say. Martinez isn’t the same dominant pitcher he was then, but he is still mighty good. Expect to see some good pitches from this seasoned veteran. (AP Photo)

Honestly, I would be THRILLED if A.J. Burnett only gave up 2 runs. That would be something new and different for him. To say he has been shaky in his last starts pretty much sums it up. He is either great, or horrible, with little room in between. Personally, I’m hoping for a great start from him today, or at least for him to keep it close. Either would be a nice change of pace from his previous post-season starts. (Getty Images)

Once again, for those who are interested, feel free to come hang out here and discuss the game as it goes along, or anything else that’s on your mind. I hope to see you later!

FYI . . .

NEW YORK (AP) – Yankees manager Joe Girardi benched slumping outfielder Nick Swisher for Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night and again put Jose Molina behind the plate to catch A.J. Burnett.

Philadelphia also had a different lineup. Raul Ibanez moved from designated hitter to left field and Matt Stairs was the DH.

Jerry Hairston Jr. replaced Swisher in right and was batting seventh. Hairston is 10 for 27 in his career against Phillies starter Pedro Martinez, but hasn’t faced him since 2004. It also was Hairston’s first start in right since July 21.

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 18:49:54

OK Rev two good things for tonight. Swisher is out, Hairston is in. And, the Phillies are staying at the hotel across the street from my office. When I passed the team buses tonight, I gave them the evil eye. I’m Italian, so hopefully it works.

Yeah but can you strut?
When we win I will treat you to a cheese steak at Ginos in south Philly. We only send people we do not like to Pats steaks.

GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!~!

@HelenK: I used to live at 8th and Dickinson! Now I live in California. I personally prefer Pats, b/c I love a little street dirt in my cheeseteak. It adds to the flavor.

@Reverend Amy-Thanks for the great analysis. You could write for the Philly Daily news.

GO PHILLIES!!!!!! Phils will clinch on Sunday.

Comment by helenk | 2009-10-29 19:39:49

I live in Hemet California. Lucky for me they opened a steak shop here. The owners are from south Philly and import the rolls and steaks and know how to make a cheesesteak. They even have Taylors porkroll and egg sandwiches.
When ever I need a fix I go visit Philly on the Run in Hemet.

ROTFL – way to go, JMM!!! :-D

Thanks AL, too, for the article. I was looking earlier to see if Girardi was finally getting the clue abt Swisher. Thank HEAVENS.

So, will he be starting Jorge at DH instead of Godzilla (please say yes)?

Don’t worry, Amy.
That first game was just a practice.
The Yankees will pull their shit together tonight.
Rooting for your boys!
And DAMN that Jeter is cute.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 20:22:46

LOL – yes, Jeter is very cute, and a nice young man, by all accounts. Even my most ardent Red Sox fan family think he’s a class act.

Actually, one of the umpires, the head of the crew, when discussing a TERRIBLE call by an umpire at 3rd said that Derek is one of the classiest guys in all of baseball, and if he is complaining abt something, because he never does, it’s big. (He was called out at third even though he wasn’t tagged.)

And thanks, Tammy!! Love the “practice game” concept!

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 18:58:59

I haven’t heard that Rev, but don’t forget Matsui will sit for the three games they play in Philly since there is no DH in the NL. I bet we see Hinske as a Pinch Hitter then.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 19:09:50

Yes, right – thanks for the reminder. I know he got a hit last night, but his head really doesn’t seem to be in the game. He GAVE them an extra out they didn’t need (right, Helenk?). Just wondering. Hinske would be good – he can probably run better than Posada…

Y’all are cracking me up abt the evil eye thing!

And JMM, I feel we know each other well enough now you can call me “Amy”! :-D LOL…

Oh, that wasn’t a nice thing to say! Clearly, you have a great team.

Once again, let’s hope for a good game, no one gets hurt, and the umps call a good game.

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 19:25:16

Does anyone here remember Rick Lazio? He’s the Repub who ran against HRC the first time she ran for Senate in NY when Giulianni dropped out. I saw him on the street today and said hello. He was actually pretty nice. I thought he was a jerk when he debated HRC and walked over to her podium.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 19:36:17

Yes, I do, J – wow – interesting that you saw him on the street. I bet he was glad you recognized him!

Did you know that the Yanks had dropped Cervelli off the roster?? Isn’t that a risky thing to do, to only have Molina and Jorge (which is why Jorge will NOT be the DH tonight)? Yikes.

Dormantdem, it is a great series. It is an impressive feat for a team to try for a back-to-back championship, too. That certainly heightens the fun of watching them play the Yanks!

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 19:43:02

Yeah I saw that about Cervelli the other day. Three catchers is a lot to carry, though. George will come in when Burnett comes out.

They dropped Guzman too. I’m glad because he was supposed to be speedy but didn’t steal any bases when he was in the game. I don’t know why Gardner isn’t playing. They seemed to love him during the season. He’s speedy and adds a spark to the team.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 20:03:45

Yeah, the article wasn’t clear abt that either. His defense is superior to Swisher’s but because Swisher is a fun guy in the dugout, I guess, they give him the start. Uh, okay…

I can’t believe, in the very first inning, that Shane was complaining abt being called out!

Comment by dormantdem | 2009-10-29 19:26:31

no, it wasn’t a nice thing to say, but that’s what’s making this such a great series.

Two great teams slugging it out.

I hope the umps call the same lousy calls for both sides as well.

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 20:09:01

I can hear my boy…’who’s your daddy?’

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 20:14:17

LOL!!

What is up with Tex?? He really has returned to the beginning of the season in terms of his bat. What a time for it…

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 20:15:44

I know. That in turns screws up A-Rod.

McCarver really should lay off the sauce at least an hour before the game begins.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 20:18:10

YES on both counts!!

Oh, wait – “great start for Pedro,” and “uneventful inning” for AJ.

Oh, dear – and now it’s Cano…

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 21:05:48

Way to get out of a jam Burnett. Where’s the praise from the announcers. Oh, I forgot, they hate the Yankees.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 21:08:10

Whew, that was close…

And, you are so right abt the announcers – they just cannot help themselves, apparently.

Now for our boys to get their BATS working!!! (So you think maybe A-Rod and Kate had a little tiff, and that’s why he’s not doing better??? If so, they need to make up already!!)

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 21:12:06

Maybe, but I think he may have lost the eye for the strike zone because the Angels kept intentionally walking him. Plus when Tex doesn’t hit, A-Rod feels the pressure to carry the team.

Walked Molina, that’s a joke.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 21:18:41

Good point abt A-Rod. And yes, I bet he is feeling a lot of pressure right now.

For the Yanks not to capitalize on MOLINA, of all people, getting walked, is terrible. I can’t believe Derek struck out – again.

Though, honestly, Derek has been so good at the plate, I reckon he deserves a bad day here and there. Unfortunately, even when he does get on base, no one can get him over. Sad.

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 21:21:27

Too bad no one can BUNT the runner over either.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 21:25:32

Exactly! Swisher couldn’t bunt to save his life.

Way to go, AJ and Molina!!! Great inning!

Let’s go, Yankees!!!!

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 21:28:50

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 22:34:17

And you wanted to sit Matsui…

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 22:41:46

Yeah, so, um, what? You’re breaking up! ;-)

I shoulda known as soon as I said that he’d come through.

Unlike the umpires. So, why wasn’t there a big meeting of them all THIS time?? They just gave Philly an out.

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 22:45:04

It was a joke. I’ve wanted to sit him for weeks. Another bad call by the umpires, what a shock. If I were as wrong about things at work as these umpires are, I’d be history.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 22:52:10

No kidding. Even when they go together, they got it wrong, at least for the Yanks. They should still be up there at bat. Pitiful.

Oh, I know you were joking around. He finally seems to be in the game TONIGHT. But hey – I’ll take it!

Comment by Always Learning | 2009-10-30 08:56:50

That’s why Joe Girardi is paid the big bucks and I’m not! I would have sat Matsui, too. I’m glad Godzilla came through! Onward to Philly -

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 23:00:31

YES!! Double play, beautiful.

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 23:04:25

That looked intentional to me.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 23:12:43

Yes, it did look intentional. (Great DP!)

Over at the Yankees message boards, people are annoyed that the announcers have gone on and on and on abt that incredibly close play at first for Utley, what it could have meant for the Phillies, blah, blah, blah, but NOTHING abt how the Yanks would have had the bases loaded with one out. Sheesh. Annoying.

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 23:14:45

That annoyed me too. Hope Mariano makes this a 1-2-3 inning.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 23:26:14

More or less! Yay! Yankees win!! And good for AJ, too – he deserved that win and the award. Yippee!

The Closer does it again! Yehh!!

Comment by JMM | 2009-10-29 23:25:41

Game over. Yankees win, yippee! Need to win one in Philly.

Good night Amy.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2009-10-29 23:29:39
